Sipping a glass of FEW Straight Rye while taking a moment to remember the Iroquois Theater Fire on this day 119 years ago on this day, December 30, 1903. An estimated 2,200 packed the "fireproof" theater that day filling all of the available seats and standing in the aisles. 602 people, mostly women and children perished in less than 15 minutes after an arc light caught a piece of muslin curtain on fire at the beginning act 2 of Mr. Bluebeard during the double octet musical number "In The Pale Moonlight". Despite the efforts of the house Fireman to douse them, the flames quickly raced across thousands of yards of highly flammable painted flats in the flys. The house asbestos curtain jammed while it was being lowered, though, since it was mostly wood pulp, it was useless. Eddie Foy, an actor, took the stage to calm the crowd as buring embers rained around him. The crowd began to evacuate and found their way blocked by locked, false or hidden doors and doors that opened inward. The cast and crew fled through the stage doors creating a blast of fresh air to fuel the flames. Others attempting escape found unfinished fire escapes, barred hallways, and othe patrons jammed into dead ends. Fire companies rescue efforts were hampered by an icy, narrow alley and thick smoke that hid their black rescue nets. Ultimately, no one would be held responsible for the disaster though it did lead to the invention of the panic bar triggered firedoor and many changes to building and fire codes. .... "It struck me as I looked out over the crowd that I had never before seen so many women and children in the audience. Even the gallery was full of mothers and children." - Eddie Foy ..... #onthisday #thisdayinhistory #iroquoistheatrefire #chicago #chicagohistory #whiskey #ryewhiskey #fryeday #whiskeylife #WhiskeyNeat #WhiskeyAfficionado #whiskyandhistory (at Coastal San Pedro) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm0dv-gL51k/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I can remember my mother taking me there when I was about 5. That was back when women wore dresses, hats, and gloves while shopping there.

THANK YOU @preservationchicago and everyone who signed and shared the petition to #savethewarehouse in #Chicago. More action is needed. Read below.

Reposted from @5.magazine BIG NEWS: A #Chicago commission on landmarks will consider arguments for granting preliminary landmark status to the site of seminal house music club The Warehouse this Thursday!
The original location of The Warehouse was added to the agenda of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks’ next regular meeting after a grassroots campaign, worldwide media coverage and an online petition lead by architectural conservation group @preservationchicago
The petition has gathered more than 12,000 signatures at press time.
Opened by Robert Williams, The Warehouse was #FrankieKnuckles first residency in Chicago. Originally called US Studios, The Warehouse operated at several locations throughout the city including the three-story building at 206 S. Jefferson in Chicago’s #WestLoop neighborhood. The site is revered as a landmark of importance to Chicago’s house music scene and the African-American and LGBTQ+ community.
The building has long been converted into a commercial office space, and sold to new owners in December. Preservation Chicago cited 206 S. Jefferson as one of Chicago’s seven “most endangered” buildings.
According to a draft document of the agenda, the Commission will consider whether The Warehouse building meets two criteria for landmark designation according to the Chicago municipal code.
The Commission on Chicago Landmarks is a body staffed by the Historic Preservation Division of the Chicago Department of Planning and Development. The commission is responsible for recommending sites for legal protection as landmarks as well as reviewing proposals for alteration or demolition of structures considered to be historically or architecturally significant.
The meeting will be held on Thursday April 13 2023 at 12:45 pm Central time. Those interested in speaking or observing the meeting can join the stream by Zoom at the Commission’s website which will be active when the meeting is about to begin. 🔗 Links + more at 5mag.net 🔗

It was yesterday when I realized I now own paperbacks of the four Christian fiction books set during the Great Chicago Fire.
If you know of any others, I'd love to hear! I couldn't find any.
Through these "big" moments in history, authors are able to show the ways fictional characters characters are altered and God is the same faithful God.
In #theUncertaintyofFire, Whimsy faces many challenges that mature her and change some preconceived notions she had of the world
In #IntotheWhirlwind, Mollie losing her business forces her to reconsider what she is capable of - and gives her forced proximity with a particular man
In #VeiledinSmoke, Sylvie finds herself struggling with the same ailment her father did while Meg works to defend his name
And in #UntiltheLightBreaksThrough, losing everything he owns forces Luke to step back and look at his own unhealed pain and the wrong ways he'd been handling it
Each of these books is so so different from the others with different portrayals of the Fire and aftermath. With all four, a fuller picture of life in Chicago in 1871 is possible!

Want to own a small sliver of Chicago history? My assumption would be that former Mayor Richard J. Daley gave these out as gifts during the holiday season. Circa 1970s. $25. As we celebrate Labor Day do we know the history behind the holiday? Once again Chicago is a pivotal point in American history. The goal to the Haymarket Protest was an 8 hour work day. Commonly associated with International Workers’ Day held on May 1st. #unionproud https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haymarket_affair Photo credits: Wikipedia #chicagohistory #unionproudhome #bestinthemidwest #haymarket #laborday (at Chicago, Illinois) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTfWX0WLRm6/?utm_medium=tumblr
