MISS CONENGINALITY - BRITTEN-NORMAN BN-2 ISLANDER
Remember when the UK made the best airplanes in the world? Me neither, I wouldn't be born for several decades. Anyway, Britten-Norman Islander.
Tumblr media
image: Air Seychelles
The last holdout of the UK making really fantastic planes, the Islander is a popular regional airliner and utility plane used for things like skydiving and air ambulance service as well as the typical passenger and cargo flights. At first glance she's a pretty regular high-wing twin-prop that seats 10, but look closer and you may begin to notice things.
Upfront, I love the Islander. (Obviously, or I wouldn't be making this post about it.) My love for this plane isn't solely organically developed, because it does also hold a special nostalgic place in my heart for being the first propeller plane I ever flew on, with Cape Air in 2015 from San Juan to Vieques. (As Vieques Air Link also operates these, they're a common sight down there! The name of the model is, as it were, very apt.)
Tumblr media
image: Cape Air This is the exact plane that I flew on!
Now, from this image you can already see that the Islander has some lovely features, from those absolute bollards coming out of the engines to the wildly pointy nose (not the first plane I've discussed that's giving DUKW), but despite looking goofier the closer you look at it this thing is an incredibly beloved and reliable plane.
Tumblr media
image: Bonham's Behold, a Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander.
Also of note is the Islander's extremely low wing aspect ratio, and I've always thought the tailplane looked a little too small for the tailfin from the side despite looking giant from below. The general ratios on this plane, in every single possible place, look just ever-so-slightly off, and I love it.
Tumblr media
image: Mark Harkin I mean. She's just blocks.
Still, this is an incredibly well-designed plane. It's cheap, rugged, utilitarian, reliable, versatile, and remarkably stable in flight, which is why over 1,000 have been built to date. (Personally, I didn't find the cabin to be the roomiest even for an aircraft of its size, but I remember it being a comfortable enough flight.) The Islander is still in production today despite first flying in the mid-1960s, which is something few models can claim. You can use an Islander for basically anything, with their big doors and STOL capability, and it's even used for the world's shortest flight and an entry on my bucket list, the two-minute hop between Westray and Papa Westray operated by Loganair.
Tumblr media
image: National Museum of Flight Scotland Despite being shown outside in this photograph, she currently lives in the civil aviation hangar, a top pick on my list of places I would like to secretly live in for the rest of my life.
Tumblr media
image: own work, taken inside the civil aviation hangar at the National Museum of Flight, Scotland
In late October I visited the National Museum of Flight, Scotland. It was an incredible experience and I will be discussing it across several future posts due to the sheer variety of preserved airframes they had, including everything from a Puss Moth to a jump jet. (The general museum will probably get a dedicated post as well in the future - suffice to say I had a fantastic time.) Among their preserved aircraft is a BN-2 Islander registered G-BELF, painted a vivid highlighter-yellow which pictures really can't do justice in homage to Scottish air ambulances which serve isolated island communities in the North Sea.
Tumblr media
I was absolutely delighted to see her in person. Seven years after I last stepped foot in an Islander, it felt like something of a reunion to just stand next to a mothballed airframe and admire how...really strange-looking these planes actually are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
own work, obvi
I mean, for one thing, they're a lot shorter than you might think they should be. Pictured for scale is a 165cm/5'5" tall human with a PSA Lockheed TriStar for a face. I couldn't get that good of an angle on it, but my head is only a few inches short of the wing, and you can see that I'm well taller than the cabin windows. An entire Islander is shorter than a single Concorde tire.
Tumblr media
Plus, that wing chord is so long I could use her as a shelter in the rain.
So, yeah. That's the story of how I met my favorite commuter airliner. I hope to fly on one again someday, but for the moment I'll have to be content with looking at pictures of these weird-looking planes that can fool you for a moment into thinking they're regular.
Tumblr media
Also they tried to put propeller shrouds on one once.

the London Necropolis
Tumblr media
It was 1850 and London had a problem.
All right. London had a lot of problems in the 1850s. Thanks to the Industrial Revolution, London had seen its population boom so quickly that the city didn't have time to make room for everyone. Housing developments and slums sprang up seemingly overnight, cramming as many people into a warren of rooms, and partitioned off rooms. as could be fit. Poverty ran rampant, cholera outbreaks swept through districts regularly, the conditions in the factories, where small children were often also employed, were deadly and the environment itself was a lung-clogging morass of soot and sewage. Some made their fortunes and managed to rise through the layers of society but many simply hung on to the bottom rungs of it for as long as they could before their hands were wrenched off to make way for others. And that didn't just apply to the living.
The dead didn't know rest either.
It didn't take long for the graveyards of London to hit full capacity with the population influx. Even with the body snatchers, working to retrieve bodies for local hospitals and schools as well as even more unsavory employers almost as soon as the grieving family left the plot, couldn't keep up with the massive amount of bodies that needed to be buried in the local cemeteries week after week, month after month, year after year. The problem grew to the point that gravediggers, hitting older coffins would simply continue digging, tossing rotted wood and whatever body parts were left into the dirt pile behind them, making room for the newest arrival in the plot. Graves got so shallow that the bare layer of dirt over them easily washed away and utterly failed to keep what was slowly decaying in the boxes covered. Church goers learned to bring perfume covered handkerchiefs to Sunday services, if they were lucky, to hold over their noses the entire time, trying to blot out the smell seeping under the doors and into the confined interiors of the buildings. Flies and other, even more unpleasant, scavengers were impossible to get rid of, lured by the ease of a quick meal and a place to take up residence. Health inspectors, and many Londoners of the time, blamed the miasma rising from the graveyards for many of the disease outbreaks that swept through the city. Something had to be done.
An amendment was passed in 1852 prohibiting most new burials in the more populous sections of London. The problem was - where did you put the bodies then?
In 1832, the Magnificent Seven, seven large plots of land outside London, had been remade into cemeteries. One business group had higher aspirations than that though. In 1854, the Brookwood Cemetery, the largest cemetery of the time, opened for business. It soon became know by a different name.
The London Necropolis.
And the London Necropolis Railway was there to make sure everyone, dead and alive, found safe transportation there.
Railroads and their trains were still new at that time. Loud and noisy, belching steam and smoke into the air, trains weren't seen as a dignified way for the dead to travel to their final resting place and eternal peace. Worse yet, travel by train might lead to a mixing of the classes, dead as well as living (gasps of alarm and swooning!). Who wanted their sweet genteel maiden aunt's body to ride in the same cargo car as some low level rake's corpse?! Why it was undignified (and very against the social divisions of the time)! Even in death, standards must be applied.
Trains, however noisy and undignified, did offer a distinct advantage. They were cheap. And they ran regularly on a schedule you could plan around, daily in fact, including Sundays. As for social distinctions - well, the LNC had a solution for that too. Depending on the money you were willing to spend, the rail offered first, second, and third class funerals, with separate train cars for each class, living or dead. Knowing that most passengers from other stations would be reluctant to ride a train that had carried dead bodies, the LNC bought new cars and engines specifically for the job, kept separate from the other routes of train travel. They laid track specifically for the job as well, so that only the necropolis trains traveled to one of the two separate stations in Brookwood Cemetery. Mourners left the Waterloo Station in London and road the train, with their unique luggage, to either the Southern Anglican Station or the Northern Station, where the 'nonconformist' section of the burial plots were. While the trains originally only ran for funerals, enough mourners wanted to return for visits to the graves of their loved ones and eventually, after about ten years, the LNC built a third station for that purpose. Almost immediately, a small hub of shops and services sprang up around the new station to cater to, and prey on, the arriving mourners. For fifty years, until 1900, the funeral trains ran on schedule, ferrying bodies, and their loved ones, back and forth between London and the Necropolis. Even after that time, the trains still ran 'as needed' until, finally, in 1941 the London Necropolis station was bombed during the London Blitz. It was the final blow to an already declining system. The station was never rebuilt.
By the 1950s, funeral trains were almost obsolete and the last one in England carried its lonely cargo in 1979. By 1988, the British Railway didn't carry coffins anymore. Time, and more efficient methods, had passed the Necropolis funeral trains by. The tracks overgrew with weeds where they weren't torn up for scrap and the only wistful train whistle left to linger in the chill evening air at the grey and abandoned gates was the long, low ghost of a memory.

The Districts
Silver Bones (residential)
Sanctuary
The air is kind. The air is kind, and the streets are clean, and there are places to sit and rest and watch the world go by. Streetcars are regular, and the buildings are eclectic, and there are children waiting under colorful lamps. It’s never exactly quiet, but it’s never crowded either. There’s someone offering food, a blanket, a hand, a young child offering up a glass of lemonade. It’s calm. It wants you to relax. It wants you to let your guard down and find somewhere to call home.
While the entirety of the Torn Veil has residential housing, the Silver Bones district is a bit quieter than the hustle and bustle of the trading districts. Shops and services are more tailored for residents, offering home goods, furniture, and cheap groceries for its residents. Lamps and lanterns light up the many corridors and bridges, bathing the whole district in soft lights of every color. Many who work in the city live in Silver Bones, whether they stock stalls in the stores or work at the Necropolis.
Shadow Puppets (entertainment)
Reflective
The song ever plays on, but what does it say about you? Why do you end up in front of a 1920s speakeasy instead of a tavern? Why go to a crass theater production instead of an orchestral ensemble? Why do you pick out one of the overlapping buildings instead of another, watch one street performer over another? The buildings all blend together through space, but go inside one and it’s like stepping back in time. Reality is fuzzy at the seams, so you have to pick what you see. Why did you pick it?
A brightly colored district where reality seems especially fuzzy at the seams. Buildings seem to fade into each other, overlapping to show architecture styles that have only one unifying theme: they’re all from places long, long in the past of their respective worlds. Strange music echoes down the streets, drawing people deeper into the maze of colors and sights and sounds. Theaters are packed day in and day out, ghostly bards and their living apprentices keeping shows running regardless of the hour of the day, while skeletal stuntmen and acrobats perform feats impossible for the living at strange circuses.
Dutchman's Docks (port)
Transitory
The ironic nature of a port is that no one ever stays for long. Sure, there’s places to stop in, grab a drink, warehouses store goods, places for people to sit down and chat and catch up, certainly. But it’s a working place, and it feels like a working place, and it’s not a place most folks stay for long. There’s work to be done, places to be, things to sell, and the roads are wide and they seem to get a little wider when crates are being sent elsewhere. Everyone is going elsewhere. The city calls the land folk further in, and the sea calls the sailors back, and the water itself calls the dead to find what they lost. It’s not a place to stay. Maybe that’s not a bad thing.
Ghostly ships sit docked next to modern sailboats and larger vessels on the easternmost side of the city, all laden with goods. Occasionally, ships and aquatic folk appear out in the foggy distance that always seems to swallow the distant sea. Once ships are docked, porters and dock-hands quickly unload goods, bringing them into the city and loading them up with cargo as captains barter over strange alcohols and games thrown with bone dice. It's connected to the Idle River, the main thoroughfare of the Torn Veil.
Kelsara's Tears (administrative)
Stark
There’s something about busy silence. Perhaps in a true afterlife, this would be the place where the dead would be processed and registered, where you might find someone tending the gates or long lists to consult. It has that feel, certainly, but those lists and those meetings are a little mundane and a little boring and a little unremarkable. The buildings are grand, but the tasks are familiar. Repetitive. A little thankless. Grounded. Unusually grounded. Perhaps it’s the fact that its workers know that progress is often a little boring. Perhaps it’s because it was named after a necromancer who became a god and died for what amounted to civic duty.
Named after a long-since dead lich god of a dead world, the most important people in the Torn Veil live and work within sprawling white and gray marble civic buildings that are built so tall that they seem to defy gravity. The Torn Veil’s premier university, the Necropolis, is also within this district, as well as its oldest libraries and grandest museums. Additionally, the district is also home to training facilities for various guards and soldiers that help protect the city from invading forces, all managed by an undead dragon general possessing a dragon-sized suit of armor.
Shrieker Road (artisan)
Divine
If there is a place that is holy, it is in the burning furnaces and pots of paint and piles of metal and under a scoring blade. The air is hot and dusty and sooty and filled with strange smells, and a thousand small workshops weave and beat and shape and mold their creations with loving, awe inspiring care. Art and love and frustration and triumphant joy overflow into the streets, mixtures of prayers for something to finally work and the hard earned sweat of a beautiful blade or a glazed vase or a tapestry embroidered with silk. It never sleeps. It never wants to sleep. Creation never wants to rest, and a thousand, million small gods of their own making would have it in no other way.
Though called ‘a road’, Shrieker Road is a full district that has built up around the bank of the Idle River. Buildings have large windows and plenty of ventilation, and the architecture is as bizarre as it is beautiful. This is where artisans both make and sell their wares, with workshops and kilns going at all hours of the day and paintings drying in a steady fluttering wind. The Torn Veil is especially known for its incredible pottery, crafted using clay dredged up from the bottom of the Idle River.
The Aurora Agora (market)
Nostalgic
It’s a place that you swear you’ve been before. It looks like the main street of a small town you visited once when you were seven and was burned into the back of your mind. It looks like walking down a street you cannot name in the middle of the night. It looks like a city center as you remember it, but it’s never quite real but never not real either. It looks like a movie, a memory, a time you were younger or a time you wish had come to pass. It’s a place that looks like it belongs somewhere else (maybe that’s why it has so many hotels, because it’s made up of those liminal memories).
A section of the city that is caught much more in the darker part of the sky. It is near the West Gate, where the bulk of travelers come into the Torn Veil on foot. Reality is slightly more stable here, a little more grounded, streets and buildings interspersed with fountains, small shrines, and hotels to stay in for a night or two. The district is still busy, certainly, but it is busy in a way that feels more like a city somewhere else. It is nostalgic, and it is strange.
Faded Dreams (market)
Imaginary
The district lives up to its name: it feels like it should only belong in a dream. There’s anything you could ever want if you just look hard enough, just wander down another aisle, talk to another person, find something that you lost or that you never knew you lost. You can’t actually buy an experience, a dream, a lost past, a second chance here, but it feels like you could. You can’t actually learn to fly either, but it feels like you could be like those semi-suspended buildings too. It doesn’t feel real, and somehow it feels less real because you can actually buy things here, as if you could take a daydream and make it solid.
A district centered around a large plaza, or at least, what at one point was a plaza. Now it’s a maze of stalls, booths, blankets, and grills, surrounded on all sides by towering buildings with a million balconies and small terraces. Those who can defy gravity most commonly frequent this market, and it is full of ghosts, avariel, fairies, and all folk who can float and fly. For those that are earthbound, levitation-powered elevators, sky carriages, and sky-trams can ferry shoppers up to the higher shops.
The Undercity (market)
Hidden
The city hides things down below. Doors are hard to find. So are shops. So are people. It’s not that the pathways change but that they shift just enough to make it hard to find things if they don’t want to be found. Sure, there’s folk who take advantage of that (more than a few, not every living dead is a good person, nor admits to be), but others want their privacy, their anonymity. If you want to disappear, the city grants that wish. Just make sure you have a way back if you want to be found again.
Tightly packed buildings crowd this section of town, with doors to taller buildings often leading to the roofs of shorter ones. Getting anywhere requires navigating a maze of back doors, tight alleys, and flickering lights. Shops are packed within, selling small goods, silver trinkets, evil eye pendants, often smaller, nich-er things that only the skilled know how to find. While often considered a seedier part of town, it’s no more dangerous than the rest of the Torn Veil… most of the time, anyways.
The Idle River
Exchange
What are you willing to learn? What are you willing to lose? The river takes and the river gives, just depends on if you want to remember or desperately want to forget. There’s souls in there too, deep, towards the bottom, where the dead rest in blissful stasis and sleep. It’s a place to start anew, and it’s a place to let yourself be washed elsewhere, and the boats on the surface are always full with wares. What have you come to gain? What are you willing to give up?
A slow-moving, meandering river that cuts through the Torn Veil, glittering with small specks of glowing light. Undead who have felt the years begin to deteriorate their mind are often found by the riverbanks, as drinking the water helps to restore their memories and overall clarity. The living can step into the river, but prolonged exposure tends to whisk memories away instead of restoring them. Many long, flat boats are also set up along the riverbanks, crewed by landfolk, while ghostly aquatic merchants barter for strange goods from within the river.
The Farmland
Growth
It’s the only part of the city that’s quiet, because it’s not within the city proper. The plants here are stubborn. So are the people, in fact. You have to be, to put down roots and force cellular production in a place with no light, to coax strange soil and stranger water to make something live in a place of death. It’s not calm out there, it’s feral, it’s almost spiteful, a metaphorical defiant ‘I will do it anyways’ to anyone who listens. Yet, despite it all, things grow. And they are tended to largely by the dead. Yet, despite it all. Things grow.

1-UAE!!
Under the guise of saving refugees, the United Arab Emirates is running an elaborate covert operation to back one side in Sudan’s spiraling war supplying powerful weapons and drones, treating injured fighters and airlifting the most serious cases to one of its military hospitals, according to a dozen current and former officials from the United States, Europe and several African countries.
The operation is based at an airfield and a hospital in a remote town across the Sudanese border in Chad, where cargo planes from the Emirates have been landing on a near-daily basis since June, according to satellite imagery and the officials, who spoke on the basis of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence.
Despite strained Sudan-UАЕ relations, gold shipments flowed freely from Sudan to Dubаi, with exports facing no obstacles and operating with official approval in Port Sudan. Political tensions didn't disrupt the lucrative trade, which continued despite the December 2023 expulsion of diplomats and accusations of smuggling.
Tumblr media
2- Russia (Wagner group)
The Russian mercenary group Wagner has been supplying Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces with missiles to aid their fight against the country’s army, Sudanese and regional diplomatic sources have told the CNN.
The sources said the surface-to-air missiles have significantly buttressed RSF paramilitary fighters and their leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo as he battles for power with Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Sudan’s military ruler and the head of its armed forces.
(Reports years ago claimed the hemedti smuggles gold to Russia)
Tumblr media
3- Libya
The eastern Libya strongman, Libyan National Army (LNA) commander Khalifah Haftar, has actively backed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) against the Sudanese military and armed forces in the ongoing fighting in Khartoum and its surrounding environs.
Haftar calculates that an RSF victory in the Sudan power struggle would secure valuable trade and smuggling routes through Sudan.
By supporting the RSF, Haftar is aligned with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Russian mercenary Wagner Group.
Tumblr media
4- Chad
Chadian sources said that the Chadian transitional government is building a new military base or depot 6-7 kilometers north of the city of Abéché in Wadaday state, with full funding from the UAE to support the Rapid Support Militia.
Mobilization campaigns and movements are now underway to prevent this criminal operation carried out by the Chadian government against citizens, with funding from the UAE, to destroy Sudan.
Tumblr media
5- Ukraine
In September 2023, CNN reported that Ukrainian special services were behind a series of drone strikes and a ground operation near Sudan's capital, Khartoum, which targeted Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a militia backed by the Wagner Group, a Russian mercenary outfit.
6- Israel
There has been evidence that Israel is also sending supplies to the RSF. Israel wants to curb Iran's expanding influence in the region, while halting human and arms smuggling routes from Sudan to Gaza. Better relations with Sudan would also enhance Israel's ties with other African countries, helping it to gain access to African markets, especially after the suspension of Israel's observer status in the African Union.
Also using Sudan’s war for cheap propaganda and diverting attention from their atrocities in Gaza by claiming that Hamas Is tied to the RSF. Hemedti tried to organize a secret meeting with officials from the Israeli Mossad without the knowledge of the government and the Sudanese army in Khartoum,on January 2022, but he was forced to inform the army of the meeting in the end, after Israel announced.
Tumblr media
7- Iran
Media reports said Iran has supplied Sudan's army with combat drones. The army has not denied the claims. Later, Sudan's Foreign Minister visited Tehran and held talks with high ranking officials as part of the two countries' efforts to restore their diplomatic relations.
8-The EU
The European Union has been accused of "hiding" the impact of its funding of the Sudanese government and its paramilitary forces as part of a programme to stem the flow of migrants from Africa to Europe. Though the EU claims it provides no funding to the government, activists and researchers say otherwise, arguing the organisation's migration initiatives also benefit, at least indirectly, the country's notorious Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9- The US
During the transitional period, there were long bread lines, and sometimes people had to wait for days to get gas. And that could have been avoided if:
1) The U.S was quicker in getting Sudan off the state sponsor of terror list which blocked it from much of the global economy. It was particularly insulting that they demanded that the only way to do that was to 'normalise' relations with Israel.
2) If the U.S wasn't insisting that the government (which arose because the Sudanese people overthrew Bashir's regime) pay reparations to the U.S for an attack that they had nothing to do with.
3) If the IMF didn't force Sudan to cut fuel and bread subsidies to get debt relief after Bashir's overthrow. One of the triggers for the 2018 revolution was that Bashir was also forced to do this. It made life miserable.
10- Saudi Arabia
The Saudis and Emiratis have turned to battle-hardened forces from Sudan with combat experience in Darfur and other parts of their country. In fact, 8,000-14,000 Sudanese mercenaries including child soldiers between the ages of 13 and 17.
Many of the Sudanese fighters in Yemen come from the Janjaweed (armed horsemen) RSF militias made up of ethnic Arabs from western Sudan, eastern Chad, and the Central African Republic (CAR).

Driving Profits
One of the biggest problems faced by long-distance shippers, whether they be truck, rail, air, or ship, is the back haul. Suppose you made your delivery. Now your delivery vehicle, whatever it may be, is empty. In an ideal world, there would be another load to haul back, which would make the whole proposition lucrative for those in the shipping business.
Alas, it doesn’t always work out that way, and the train loads I see of stacked shipping containers heading west on the BNSF mainline by my house possibly are empty. You know. They are on their way back to China and other Asian nations so they can be refilled with more stuff for us.
It would be nice to keep those cars full of cargo, whatever kind it is. Now if we could just figure out how to send more things back to Asia. Not all containers go back empty, but our long-term imbalance of trade implies that at least some do. We consume more than we produce, and import more than we export.
A somewhat related problem is that faced by taxi and rideshare drivers. Airports are common pickups and drop-offs. Wouldn’t it be nice if you had a steady flow of those so that you never had an empty back seat? It’s not like these drivers can operate their vehicle like a bus, with people always getting on and off. No, they are doing repetitive out-and-backs, unless they get lucky and can string together customers.
Then there’s meal delivery services. A driver may be able to pack multiple orders in his or her vehicle if they are going to the same general location, but you can’t do too much of this, lest meals turn cold. And once again, you have to return to a restaurant—much like the airport—for the next gig.The result is empty vehicles, just like those shipping containers. It costs money to run empty.
Uber, though, has figured out their core business better than most. They are in the transportation business. Hauling people to and from morphed into Uber Eats, which helps connect more dots. And now they have launched their package return service, yet another transportation-related offering aimed to keep vehicles full of something, whatever it may be.
Tumblr media
For $5 (and only $3 for UberOne members), an Uber driver will pick up your e-commerce return, and drop it off at the appropriate courier. (Uber One is a subscription service that offers discounts on rides, deliveries, groceries, etc., and costs $10 a month.) The return package must have prepaid shipping and be good to go. It is basically the complete opposite of how the package got to your porch in the first place.
Because, you know, returns can be a hassle, and they add one more stop to already busy days.
Returns is a bigger part of the equation than most people suspect. While it has trended downward the last couple of years to “only” 18.2% of online sales, it amounts to about $200 billion worth of returns a year. I am sure it is this number that Uber was focusing on when it decided to pursue this growth opportunity.
It’s a smart move by Uber, who wishes to expand into new customer markets, as well as further penetrate the ones it already serves. And with e-commerce predicted to grow 4.8% this holiday season to $221.8 billion, it stands to reason there will be plenty of returns. Never mind the rest of the year.
So I must ask the question: Are people going to pay $5 per package to make a return? At the surface, it seems like a fairly cheap convenience. I doubt I would use it, if only because there’s a UPS store only a couple of blocks from campus. It’s no big deal to swing by there. But if you live a busy life and do not have easy access to drop-off locations, then $5 may be a bargain.
There is one drawback, and that is the same as having front porch delivery in the first place: Porch pirates. It is just as possible that someone could steal your return as your delivery.
Otherwise, I see this as a win for Uber. They are working on solving a problem at the micro level. Now we need to work on the macro problem.

Choosing the Right Freight Forwarder: Your Ultimate Checklist
A freight forwarder can be one of the most important decisions you make for your shipping operations in the complex world of global logistics. A professional and experienced freight forwarder is an integral part of this transformation, as they make sure your goods reach their intended destination safely and on time without any delay and within your budget. So, how should you go about picking a freight forwarder from all the options available? The Best Checklist to Become Informed MTI (Logistics Expert in Djibouti)
Understanding the Role of a Freight Forwarder
The main role of a freight forwarder is to act as a liaison between the shipper and different transportation services. The complete logistics chain is orchestrated through them, starting from documentation and customs clearance to warehousing and cargo insurance. The best freight forwarder has undefined advice and a big network to bring value to your e-commerce business, not just sending from point A to point B but also having expertise in this regard.
Your Ultimate Freight Forwarder Checklist
1. Experience and Expertise
Knowledge in the Industry: Make sure their specialist experience reflects your industry. They will know the specifics about regulations and which policies are implemented that apply to the type of cargo you are moving.
Track Record: Cross-check every freight forwarder that you deal with to ensure that they have a record of delivering their shipments. The first indicator would be checking references and reviews by the employees to see if they are reliable or high performers.
2. Global Network Coverage: The broader the international network of the freight forwarder, the greater service level is available to you, and also the more shipping modes you can get. They should also have good working relationships with the carriers, agents, and warehouses, either locally or internationally.
Geographical Reach and Local Knowledge: You have to be worldwide and have a specific location recognized as your home. Regional: In difficult trade areas, it is especially helpful to have good knowledge of regional logistics and customs, and with a local forwarder that will assist you greatly.
3. Range of Services
Embark has a range of carriage services that cover air, sea, and land transports, clearance agents/houses, warehousing, distribution services, etc.
Specialized services: However, if you have special or restricted shipping needs, for instance, using some containers for extreme flammable materials or perishable goods, ensure that the forwarder is capable of handling (they should have the certifications to handle) such items.
4. Customer Service
Communication is important, as it is the key to a good relationship. The Free Forwarder should always keep you updated on time and should never be reluctantly responding to your queries.
Personalized solutions: Ensure the forwarder provides you with a customizable facility to match individual business requirements. Know who will do what and who can evolve when priorities change.
5. Technology and Tracking
High visibility with real-time tracking: Comprehensive real-time tracking helps you keep an eye on your products.
Automation and Integration: Choose a forwarder with automated services and integrate their claims with your back-end systems to increase efficiency and reduce errors.
6. Cost Efficiency
Look for Transparent Pricing: If you are new to the world of freight forwarding, then ask the freight forwarder for their prices and be sure that their pricing is transparent without any hidden costs. Ask for detailed quotes and compare to know the cost structure.
For the Money: Cost is always a major factor, but you often have an emphasis on the commodity, and some of the offerers are too cheap to be good. Last but not least, one should consider the cost, quality of services that would be provided, and most of all the warranty.
7. Compliance and Risk Management
Regulatory Compliance: Freight forwarders should be conversant with laws governing international freight forwarding business and operation, and every legal provision, rule, and regulation should be respected.
Risk management involves the insurance of those goods or products being transported as well as planning for situations in which the supply chain has been interrupted.
8. Sustainability
Environmental Practices: If the environment is among your principal concerns when securing the services of a freight forwarder, then ensure that they incorporate sustainable environmental strategies that offer environmentally friendly and green shipping.
Corporate responsibility Ask themselves how committed they are towards implementing CSR programs since this may depict the organization’s ethical culture in business.
What Freight Forwarder Services You Should Be Expecting
Research and Referrals: Where to find freight forwarders: one can use the Internet to search for freight forwarders based on their specialization or obtain recommendations from colleagues in the same industry. These are factors that one should consider when identifying the specialty moist that has a good reputation and has clients who are willing to testify to the kind of services they were offered by the moist.
Request Proposals: Approach a few of the freight forwarders for the selection and send a request for a proposal to them to get offers from them. Erasure: You evaluate your participants’ responses utilizing the criteria you have outlined on the checklist.
Conduct Interviews: Organize meetings with potential forwarders to go through all necessary information and needs. Evaluate the extent of their actual and potential communication, operational proficiency, and flexibility to tailor their offerings.
Pilot Test: Before signing a contract with the selected forwarder, it is advisable to make a trial shipment with the fur fillers to see the overall service of the forwarder company.
Conclusion
Essentially, it is vital to select an appropriate freight forwarder because your business largely depends on its effective supply chain mechanism. In this checklist prepared by Djibouti-MTI, you can find a freight forwarder best suited for your needs more strategically. Hm
A strange thought occurred.
Lets assume that society miraculously can't use trains and cargo ships to move great deals of stuff from afar, which means centralized manufacturing facilities have less bang for their buck and you tend to rely on more local industry to build and sell things.
Lets assume that this society that has a premium for transportation of massive amounts of goods has access to our technology and processes to manufacture things on a small scale, just, for whatever reason, can't utilize cheap and bulk transportation of goods across the country or internationally. It's a ludicrous stipulation, but work with me here. Think small town colonial America times. The technology that you have isn't especially great save for major urban places where they make shoes and cotton clothing en masse.
If they knew all the science, physics and engineering that we do today, but applied themselves towards manufacturing a kind of light source and battery, I wonder what it would've been like? Yes, the answer is likely a multitude of standards, but..
Follow me. When we think of one to two centuries ago, we think of candle power and oil lanterns as the Old Timey way they lit their world. How they operated economically during those times that the sun was down. And why did they use that?
Because they were locally producable and available on a shoestring budget. When you live in a forest, you learn to work with wood. When you live in a rocky area, you learn to make stone into everything. The small businesses, or larger businesses, that turn labor into manufactured goods by turning cheap materials into goods and labor saving devices or services.
Some of the staples of today that we take for granted and tie the country together, are simply because geographic locations and mass transportation of goods by rail or ship makes it very efficient to have things spread all over the place.
But, what sort of standards and technology might we use if we didn't have that international access and had to rely more on regional businesses to provide? What kinds of technology, if it were purely ecologically regionally sourced and local, would we have?
The question of exactly what expectations we would have if our technology was limited to those choices based on the best technology and availability of resources to make them, and labor to produce them that we have, fascinates me. Might we have gone further up the tech tree for zinc or iron air batteries sooner?
Would we have some sort of old timey Solar Panel company in place of a parafin wax company? Something that could be created with a minimum of industrial machinery or big, expensive machines. What is the maximum level of sophistication that a single human being with handheld tools or power tools could create?
We think of old timey technology and kind of pity how almost-there our ancestors lived in the absence of science and technology and the society to sustain it. We went from wooden torches, to oil lanterns, to candles, to gas torches, to incandescent lighting, to LEDs. We went from drums, smoke signals, carrier pigeons, to telegram and radio in the matter of 1,000 years. And our predecessors would've used this technology, if they understood the physical processes and science and applied it to technology through what materials and industry they had available to them at the time.
I don't have any allusions of locally made being superior to things made in large businesses. That's stupid. But I am fascinated in scenarios where alternate technology standards develop out of ecological necessity, based on the available resources of the region and the infrastructures and companies that form to properly exploit them.
Just. Clearly, obviously, LEDs are superior to your typical incandescent flashlight or light source for their superior light, light quality, longevity, and potentially even the ease at which you can acquire the resources to make them if you needed to, easing the load of how quickly batteries are consumed. And if our old timey ancestors could've made those instead of the products they made, maybe they would have made those instead. Hindsight is 20-20, though.
This stream of consciousness probably sounds like veering word salad at this point, but bear with me.
What would the highest, most sophisticated kind of technology be that could also fill that niche and role of the chandler/candlemaker of yore? Where some dude could buy a few materials from the company that employs miners and sells minerals and metals or ores and make their own products, the way a candle maker acquires parafin and string to make candles?
It's an interesting question and criteria I really should explore more and try to refine, but I'm limited by my own ignorance of material science, engineering and regional ecology. But, it's an interesting set of thoughts to contemplate.
