"According to the Moms for Liberty website, the group now has over 265 chapters in 43 states with a total membership of over 110,000. As the maps from the group’s website shows, the movement is strongest in its home state of Florida, but it is clear that Moms for Liberty is now very much a national organization, with dozens of chapters in blue states like New York and California.

In Pennsylvania, the leader of a local Moms for Liberty chapter allegedly hijacked a dead woman’s Facebook page to harass her enemies, including using the N-word and saying they should hang from a noose. In Arkansas, the head of communications of the Lonoke County chapter said that librarians should be 'plowed down with a freaking gun.' In Chattanooga, Tennessee, a member of a local Moms for Liberty chapter harassed an opposing group, threatened to report them for child abuse, and called them 'pedophile sympathizers.' In Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, police had to be called to a school board meeting after members of Moms for Liberty accused attendees of being 'groomers' and wanting to show explicit pictures to children. In Charleston, South Carolina, a Moms for Liberty-affiliated member of the local school board publicly stated he would show up at his son’s teacher’s doorstep with a gun if the teacher came out as transgender."

As water builds up on the gravel driveway during the cool weather season, it might freeze and make it hard for cars to gain traction, particularly if your home is on a steep grade, like many in the Chattanooga area.

During the summer and spring, driveway stones shift whenever vehicles travel over them. Eventually, this pushes the gravel past the original boundary of the driveway.

As time passes, potholes start forming in gravel driveways. Most of the stone that has pushed beyond the boundaries gets lost to the soil around it or pressed inside the ground by the weight of cars traveling over it.

The consequence of all of this traffic is that occasionally, you will have to apply new stone. Here’s the good news: over time, the stone becomes the perfect base for an asphalt driveway.

Paving the driveway – or parking lot – in which stone was laid down long enough to get embedded inside the soil because of ongoing traffic is less expensive than new construction, since fewer labor and materials are involved.

There are many benefits to having an asphalt driveway rather than a gravel one. Because of its rigid structure, asphalt stays in place.

Additionally, it’s possible to control and determine an asphalt grade, permitting water to move off of the driveway. It’ll improve traction and make navigation less treacherous in the winter.

Lastly, it’s much easier to shovel or plow asphalt. With gravel driveways, you’ll run the risk of tossing gravel all over your property or damaging your blade inside a pothole.

Molasses making on Brown Ridge

After two long days of cutting sugar cane, stripping, grinding, and boiling down the juice in a vat, Keith Banks drains the completed molasses into quart jars under the watchful eye of his sister, Arlene Staley.  This, the final step as about 75 gallons of cane syrup has become three cases of quart jars full old-timey molasses, a sweet treat like no other.  Other "supervisors" are, left, Thurmond Banks and Oscar Plato.  Mike and Arlene Staley have bought the old V. C. Brooks farm on Brown  Ridge Road in North Wilkesboro and are restoring many of the old buildings, including this one being used for making molasses.

A lot of work, but a work of love and tradition, culminates in quart after quart of homemade molasses. Below, talking a brief break from cutting sugar cane on Sunday morning are, left to right, Keith Banks, Thurmond Banks and Oscar Plato. Keith Banks, Arlene Staley's brother, says the seeds they use are called "Sugar Drip," an old variety their family has used at their farm on Lickskillet Road in Burnsville, N. C. for generations.

Keith Banks with the Banks family's cane grinder, which is well over 100 years old, has been adapted to use electricity, but was originally made to be operated by mule power.  It was built by the Chattanooga Plow Company.

Maxwell House Coffee isn't the only thing good to the last drop.

One of the old out-buildings Mike and Arlene Staley are working to save , this one features porcelain knob and tube wiring which was added years after it was built.  A house and several other building on the Brooks farm are being restored by the Staley's with great care to preserve their history.  Mike and Arlene Staley live just down the road on Brown Ridge as well.

Alene Staley was particularly taken with part of the wording on the cane grinder, reflecting just how old the machine is--it reads, "Feed Cane Large End Foremost."

This pickup load of sugar cane was scheduled to be worked on Tuesday and Wednesday.

This is a long post, because whatever this system was, it was an aberration and merits a long story. It messed around with peoples lives and property and mental health from the Midwest down through the Southeast and then up the coast with tornados, thunderstorms, deluges, hail, with awful consequences such as the boat accident in Branson, Missouri and the floods in the Mid-Atlantic states.

Is it July or March? A rare and steep summer dip in the jet stream has brought an incredibly wacky week of weather to the Lower 48.

Usually, this fast-moving air current along which storms track retreats in summer, meandering listlessly in Canada.

Not so in recent days.

“The jet stream has stretched all the way from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico over the eastern U.S., helping to trigger the intense tornado outbreak in Iowa, and the persistent, torrential rains in the Mid-Atlantic,” said Jeff Halverson, Capital Weather Gang’s severe weather expert. “Even veteran meteorologists with decades of experience are astounded by the extreme nature of this jet stream pattern.”

As this jet stream and pool of cold air in its wake have interacted with all of the intense midsummer heat over the Lower 48, it has incited all sorts of unusual and severe weather. Not only has the pattern been extreme but it has also become stuck in place. This has led to day after day of remarkable and frequently disruptive weather.

Thursday

Things kicked off Thursday when the jet stream dived south through the Midwest, triggering at least a dozen confirmed tornadoes in Iowa. Despite a direct hit to Marshalltown, a city of 28,000, and hefty damage on the outskirts of Pella, there were no fatalities — a testament to the high lead time provided by the National Weather Service in warnings issued that day.

Farther south Thursday, a derecho with widespread 60 to 80 mph gusts tracked from southern Nebraska down into northern Arkansas, spelling disaster at Table Rock Lake in Branson, Mo. The storm had a history of producing damaging winds — up to 89 mph in Lecompton, Kan. — along its nearly 500-mile track. The well-forecast storm caught some off guard, killing 17 people when it sank a duck boat trapped in high winds and waves.

Friday

The upper-level disturbance wrapped up in the diving jet stream plowed farther south and east Friday, shifting the threat for severe storms over the Ohio and Tennessee valleys. The Storm Prediction Center had a “moderate risk” of severe weather over portions of Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. The biggest threat proved to be damaging winds. The National Weather Service received 395 reports of high wind or wind damage. But that wasn’t all. Softball-size hail — incredibly rare in July, thanks to high freezing levels in the atmosphere — was reported in Kentucky.

Saturday 

The weird jet stream helped to drag moisture up the Eastern Seaboard, setting the stage for prolific rains. At Reagan National Airport near Washington, four inches came down. Since 1941, only a dozen other calendar days have seen four inches or more.

To the south, a pair of nighttime supercell storms northeast of Chattanooga, Tenn., merged and formed a line around 2 a.m. Saturday. This line collapsed south into Georgia.

The National Weather Service hoisted a severe thunderstorm watch for the Atlanta metro area at 3 a.m. as the windy storms raced south during the morning rush hour. As soon as they were gone, the  sun came out, the atmosphere reloaded, and the stage was set for another round of dangerous storms in the afternoon. For the second time that same day, a severe thunderstorm watch was in effect

.One storm that afternoon even split and formed two new supercells. Thanks to northwest flow and an unusual turning of the winds owing to the bizarre jet stream, the “left split” supercell blew up into a massive storm. The really weird part? This storm was spinning clockwise, or anticyclonic. Less than 2 percent of mature supercells do so. That storm went on to produce tennis-ball-size hail in Dacula, Ga. — the second-largest hailstone on record in the Peach State in July.

Sunday-Monday 

Storms continued south into Florida on Sunday, and on Monday, they threw it into reverse — literally. Though the steering flow pushed clouds southeast, the cluster back-built westward along the front at the same rate. This gave the appearance of a stationary line of storms at the mouth of the Mississippi River, producing nearly 200,000 lightning strikes over the course of its 19-hour life span. It was nuts.

Tuesday-Wednesday

The stalled storm system has been blamed for widespread flash flooding from the Carolinas up through New England, drawing a fire hose of tropical moisture up the East Coast. Baltimore has picked up more than 15 inches of rain, a July record.

While the West Coast has not dealt with storminess, it has endured extreme weather of its own. Like a see-saw, the jet stream has lifted north allowing scorching heat to swell from the Desert Southwest to Seattle.Death Valley, Calif. soared to a daily record of 127 degrees Tuesday, very close to its highest temperature measured in decades: 129 degrees on June 30, 2013. Seattle is predicted to have its longest streak of hot weather on record with temperatures at least 88 degrees for a week. The Weather Service is also calling for “very dangerous heat” in the Sacramento Valley.

“My God, just look at that horde of locusts,” said Tom Pierce. The 32-year-old Knoxville, Tennessee, white nationalist organizer as he stood next to a handful of members of the neo-Confederate hate group League of the South, holding rebel battle flags. The men stood beside a chunk of white stone memorializing the Confederate soldiers who died in a lopsided Civil War battle almost 154 years ago near what is now the University of Tennessee campus.

Across the street were about 2,000 anti-racist demonstrators, hurling jeers at Pierce and the band of about 40 white nationalists and other far-right activists who turned out for the “Defend Knoxville Confederate Monument” rally Pierce led on Saturday, August 26, two weeks to the day after the infamous “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which led to chaos and violence, including the vehicular homicide of anti-racist protester Heather Heyer.

Unlike the militant racists who’d descended on Charlottesville 14 days earlier, however, the Knoxville demonstrators last Saturday were outnumbered by counter-protesters at least 50 to 1. The two sides were separated by metal barricades and hundreds of armored city, county and state law enforcement officers carrying long wooden batons and pepper spray guns.

“What do you think we should do, Tom?” asked one League of the South member.

Pierce pondered the question. Then he began to sing “Dixie,” the blackface minstrel show tune composed in the 1850s to defend slavery.

The League of the South members joined in full voice.

The response from the other side of the street was a deafening roar. “Dixie” was drowned out.

It was a bad day for white nationalists in Knoxville that only got worse.

Not only were the demonstrators on the Confederate memorial side of the street subjected to constant insults and shouted down by thousands every time they opened their mouths, they also began to read, with growing dismay, news alerts on their smart phones about two other far-right rallies also scheduled for last weekend. Those rallies, in Berkeley and San Francisco, California, both were called off at the last minute due to overwhelming opposition.

The Knoxville rally was initiated by Confederate 28, a Tennessee white supremacist group affiliated with the United Kingdom-based neo-Nazi organization Blood and Honour. Following a five-year hiatus, Confederate 28 resurfaced in June, protesting gay pride parades and distributing fliers and stickers in public. In July, Confederate 28 members attended a meeting of the Chattanooga, Tennessee, chapter of the Traditionalist Workers Party, a hate group led by Indiana-based white nationalist Matthew Heimbach, that played a major role in the deadly Unite the Right event in Charlottesville. Like the Knoxville rally, Unite the Right was promoted on the pretense of “defending” a Confederate war memorial.

Confederate 28 announced plans for the Knoxville rally in mid-August when a Confederate memorial near the university campus there was defaced with blue paint a few hours after a car driven by a neo-Nazi plowed into a crowd of anti-racist demonstrators in Charlottesville, injuring 35 and killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer.

The day before the Knoxville rally, however, Confederate 28 suddenly announced that it had “dissolved due to internal issues.” The group shut down its website and released a statement announcing that it had “suspended all projects and events, and we have no hand in the rally” planned for the next day. “The Knoxville locals have started their own rally, and have taken up the cause of defending their history,” the statement read.

A permit for the Knoxville rally was obtained in mid-August — when it was still being promoted as a Confederate 28 event — by “Dixie” song leader Pierce, a self-employed truck driver and self-described white separatist who ran last year for Knox County Commission. He lost, receiving only seven percent of votes. In campaign materials, Pierce identified himself as a board member of the Council of Conservative Citizens, a white nationalist hate group. He is also a former associate of the neo-Nazi skinhead group Volksfront.

Despite the steamy weather in Knoxville, several white men in their 20s and 30s who showed up to rally alongside Pierce wore long-sleeved shirts buttoned above the neck. Another wore a conspicuous blue athletic band covering his right arm from wrist to bicep. Anti-racist demonstrators shouted accusations the men were hiding neo-Nazi tattoos. They waved fistfuls of cash at the man with the armband, offering him $1,000 to remove it and prove them wrong. He smiled and extended a middle finger in reply. One of the men in long sleeves had a tiny swastika tattoo on one hand. A Volksfront logo was tattooed on his other.

The Chattanooga Plow Company was an outgrowth of Newell Sanders and Company, established in 1878. G.W. Wheland and Capt. C.D. Mitchell were other leaders of the firm. They recognized that many farmers used plows which were crudely manufactured. Their cold-chilled plow became widely known for quality, and an advertisement said that “nothing sticks to it except farmers.” By 1895, the company had evolved into a plant covering nearly six acres. In addition to plows, they made cane mills, furnaces, and evaporators. A tunnel brought water from the river to the power house, where a steam boiler was fired to produce electricity. For some time now, I had been looking at subaru imprezas, of which I love. However, each insurance quote I got from my parents was something like 3400 a year under my dad, and close to 8,000 a year under my own policy, with collision, so my parents wouldnt even consider it. I left my house the other night with my car key so she couldn't use it - This is after everyone I asked that I knew told me to take the keys. She is also living with me, I am renting the home. Hello .. I would like to listen to your opinios regarding this situation that has turned into a nightmare for me !!! I spent few months in Australia.. I have a full driving license.. I was driving on the M4.. I had 2 cars in front of me .. I was in the last car in the row ( third car ) .. the car in the front ( First car ) has braked suddenly .. The car in the middle ( second car ) hit it causing it much damage .. I could not stop at the right time and i hit the middle car afterwards .. Now .. The man in the middle car has lied to his insurance company and said that he stopped at the right time but when i hit him i made his car jump to the front and hit the front car .. I have now 2 insurance companies chasing me for money and treat me as a hunt because i had no third party property damage at the time of the accident .. My understanding was that the greenslip covers these things but actually they dont .. I have received bills from both companies.. 7000 AUD for the front car and 2000 for the middle car .. The details of repairs in the middle car ( that i hit on a very low speed) shows that damage at the rear of the car cost only 427 AUD and i offered them to pay it .. The Ole Miss Rebel softball team went 3-1 in the Ole Miss Classic over the weekend. The Rebels lone loss came on Sunday to in-state rival Southern Mississippi.

Ole Miss (13-3) took an early lead over the Golden Eagles until the top of the third as Southern Miss plated five runs.

The Rebels’ starter Kaitlin Lee went unscathed in the first two frames of the game, but in the third, she did not have her normal command on pitches. Lee picked up her first loss of the season and was lifted for freshman Anna Borgen.

Borgen got things back on track in the circle going 4.1 scoreless in the game.

In the second inning, the Rebels took a one-run lead as Alex Schneider led off before Paige McKinney drove her in with a two-out triple into the right-center field gap.

Ole Miss pulled closer in the sixth as McKinney brought Amanda Roth home on a ground ball to second.

Saturday, the Rebels swept Saint Louis and Chattanooga in the first game of the day. Ole Miss continued its hot hitting streak.

The Rebels broke the deadlock with a run in the third. Amanda Roth continued her torrid pace from the day before leading off the inning with a hot-shot single off of the third baseman’s glove. Kylan Becker moved Roth over and reached first base on a fielding error. After Bry Castro replaced Roth at second base, she scored on a hustle play, coming all the way around from second as SLU attempted to turn a double play on a Celeste Wood grounder.

Ole Miss’ starter Brittany Finney picked up her first win of the season against Saint Louis by going the distance and allowing one run on six hits, striking out seven.

SLU did not wait long to strike back as Allie Macfarlane barreled up a pitch by Finney for a solo shot to left that tied the game at 1-1.

The Rebels, however, got the final word in, taking advantage of a pair of Saint Louis errors to plate a pair of unearned runs. Autumn Gillespie and Alex Schneider both reached on errors to put a pair of runners on base for the Rebs and Kaylee Horton made the Billikens pay, hitting a sharp single through the left side to bring Gillespie in. Schneider scored a few batters later to give Ole Miss an insurance run, trotting home after a bases-loaded walk was issued to Elantra Cox.

When it came time for the Rebels to take the diamond against Chattanooga, it didn’t take Ole Miss long to get the bats heated up. Ole Miss scored in all four innings of a run-rule victory, topping the Mocs 10-2 in five.

Ole Miss got the scoring started immediately as Schneider watched four balls with the bases loaded to plate Cox. Roth followed by wearing a pitch off her elbow guard to score another run in the form of Gillespie, and Kaylee Horton drove in the final run of the inning with a fielder’s choice, scoring Finney.

The Rebels tacked on three more runs in the second in loud fashion. After an Ally Mena walk and a Cox single, Gillespie teed off on an Allison Swinford offering, plowing a three-run jack to straight-away center.

The Rebels kept the train moving along in the third, posting a pair of runs to take the eight-run lead over the Mocs. As she did all weekend, Roth got on base with a walk to start things off and came around to score on a Horton double up the middle. Cox plated Horton shortly thereafter with a groundout to make it 8-0 in favor of the home team.

Ole Miss extended the lead to 10 in the fourth on a mammoth, two-run fly off the bat of Gabby Alvarez, and while the Mocs were able to score a pair in the fifth, it wasn’t enough to escape the run-rule.

Chattanooga faced three different Rebels in the circle as Anna Borgen got the start and pitched a gem throwing three scoreless innings with only three hits allowed. Coach Mike Smith called on the arm of Morgan Bruce for an inning, and Bruce kept the Mocs off the scoreboard. Bruce then turned it over to Ava Tillmann in the fifth, who gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits.

In the first game of the Ole Miss Classic, the Rebels faced UT Martin. It was just the third time this season for the Rebels to play in front of their home crowd, and they did not disappoint defeating the Skyhawks 10-2 in five.

Ole Miss’ third baseman Amanda Roth found her swing against UT Martin. In her previous 15 at bats, she was hitless. Once the freshman got her first base knock of her college career, the floodgates opened, and she finished the night going 3 for 3 at the plate.

The Rebels didn’t wait long to take the lead as they struck first in the opening inning. Autumn Gillespie got the scoring started with a single up the middle, which plated Kylan Becker from third. Freshman Abbey Latham followed with an RBI single of her own into left to score Celeste Wood.

Kaitlin Lee was a bit off her game but picked up the win as she held UT Martin to two runs on six hits. Lee had to work around a couple of Rebel errors.

The Skyhawks tried to respond with no outs and the bases juiced in the second. The veteran Lee proceeded to induce a pop out to first then a pair of fly outs to get out of the jam.

The Rebs went right back to work in the home half, doubling their lead when Roth followed Schneider’s leadoff single with a frozen rope to left that narrowly cleared the fence. Following a UTM run in the third, Ole Miss tacked on two more in the bottom half when Latham scored on a throwing error and Ally Mena came home on a Schneider sacrifice fly.

Ole Miss again capitalized on a Skyhawk mistake in the fourth, taking advantage of an extra out to increase its lead by one when Becker came home on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Mena. However, the Skyhawks were able to get the run back in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Alexis Rogers.

The Rebels return to action on Tuesday as they host the Boston College Eagles. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on the SEC Network.

Pasture Management 101: Starting a New Pasture from Scratch

In the first two installments of our pasture management series we talked about renovating established pastures. However, occasionally horse owners will find that it’s ultimately a better option to start the process from scratch. Factors to consider when doing so include facility design, rotational grazing, recommended seeding practices, and toxic weeds.

Plan Your Paddocks and Pastures

When designing a pasture for your facility, keep in mind the total number of horses your land can support.

“Many horse owners want to have pasture provide a majority of their horse’s nutrition, but often overstock the land,” said Jennie Ivey, MS, PhD, assistant professor and extension equine specialist at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. Thus, they “use turnout time strictly for exercise while providing additional hay” for nutrition, she said.

In general, the recommended stocking rate—which allows for a horse to graze pasture without stressing the grass stand and prevents overgrazing—is one mature horse per 2 to 3 acres of land. While pastures in some areas might be able to maintain horses on less land, keep in mind that varying weather patterns, soil fertility, manure presence, and weeds will impact how much forage is available for the horse to consume.

“Consider implementing a rotational grazing system with a heavy-use area,” Ivey said. “Divide the total acreage for pasture use into one- to two-acre plots, with access to a central heavy use or ‘sacrifice area.’ ”

This system allows owners to let horses graze one plot until the grass is about 3 inches in height, then move to another pasture to allow the first plot to rest. Owners can continue rotating horses through the remainder of the plots (if available) until the first pasture reaches 8 inches in height, at which point the cycle can begin again.

Horses should always have access to the heavy-use area, making it a good place to provide water and shelter. As a bonus, this heavy-use area gives owners a turnout paddock if horses need to be kept off pasture, for instance, after heavy rain to prevent grass from being torn up or to limit grazing time.

Plant Your Pasture

Once you’ve designed your pasture layouts, conduct a soil test to help you select the ideal forage species for your region and soil type.

Then, you’ll need to decide how you’ll go about planting the new stand of forage: through conventional or no-till seeding practices.

“Conventional seeding requires preparation of the seedbed by plowing and disking the field to mechanically kill plants that may compete with new seedlings,” Ivey explained. “Once the seedbed has been prepared, then seed can be broadcast or drilled and cultipacked for optimal growth results.

“Alternatively, no-till seeding uses herbicides to remove any competition within the pasture,” she continued. “Then, a no-till drill is used to place the seed in contact with the soil at the appropriate depth.”

Ensure you plant (or have your pastures planted) at the proper time for the species of grass or legume you’ve selected. This is usually during spring or fall.

Other factors to consider include planting the right amount of seed, planting when moisture is available, and planting seed at the proper depth to ensure establishment of a good stand and plant survival. Your county extension agent or district conservationist can provide you with information on appropriate seeding dates, rates, and depths for your area.

Give the New Pasture Time to Grow, and Check for Weeds

Once you’ve planted your pastures, don’t let your horses enjoy them just yet, said Dewitt Simerly, a district conservationist with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources and Conservation Service.

“When establishing pastures be certain to keep horses off the pasture area until the grasses can become established then control competition from weeds or undesirable vegetation,” he said.

Finally, inspect your pastures regularly for presence of weeds and plants that are toxic to horses and other hazards, such as broken fences, and have a plan in place for correcting the situation. Ivey advised owners to keep and special eye out to the following toxic weeds:

Buttercup (Ranunculus species, widespread across the country);

Jimsonweed (Datura stamonium, widespread across the country);

Nightshade family (Solanum species, across northeast, mid-west, southwest and southeast regions of the United States);

Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana, eastern United States); and

Poison hemlock and water hemlock (Conium maculatum and Cicuta species, widespread across the country).

Herbicides can be used to kill weeds but caution should be used to spray weeds at the right time and with the correct product and amount to be most effective.

But, “the most effective means to prevent weed presence is the establishment and maintenance of a good pasture stand,” Ivey said.

Conor Oberst can do it all: unleashes full-band and tons of guests on new album, shares new music, announces spring and summer dates

Okay, let me explain, y’all. On March 17, bright-eyed-guy Conor Oberst will release his brand new album — presumably concerning the theme of getting older and its effects on one’s relationship to drugs and friends �� on Nonesuch Records. Or… well, kinda brand new? See, the 17-track affair, titled Salutations and recorded with a full-band comprised of The Felice Brothers and superhero drummer Jim Keltner (dude’s held it down for Neil Young, Jackson Browne, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and more) — not to mention a chunky smattering of guest stars like Jim James, M. Ward, Gillian Welch, Blake Mills, and Jonathan Wilson — is actually a reconstruction of last year’s humble 10-track album Ruminations album (which was tracked with just vocals, guitar, piano, and harmonica) with seven brand new jams added.
