i am once AGAIN thinking about the scene in black sails where flint has just been forced by miranda to confront his overwhelming grief over losing thomas, which has been fueling his unholy rage for the past two seasons. flint is sitting there, having a flashback, drowning in the tragedy and injustice of his gay lover’s death… then vane bursts into the room like a roided-up kool-aid man and immediately tries to kill him. 10/10, flawless tonal whiplash, one of the funniest moments in the entire show.

the thing about charles "i can understand a woman's desire for domesticity, but a man's?" vane is that i've seen people read that as "it's gay to live in a house" and "it's counterrevolutionary to live in a house" and the thing is it's both. vane is an anticolonial proto-anarchist and he also has some really fucking weird ideas about gender. his answer to the central question of communism* is "yes, obviously"

*which is, of course, "Are women bourgeois?"

No, no, no… you've got it all wrong… you can't act death. The fact of it is nothing to do with seeing it happen - it's not gasps and blood and falling about - that isn't what makes it death. It's just a man failing to reappear, that's all - now you see him, now you don't that's the only thing that's real: here one minute and gone the next and never coming back - an exit, unobtrusive and unannounced, a disappearance gathering weight as it goes on, until, finally, it is heavy with death.
