what is the chara mate stage???

The charamate stage is what us and our partner system tend to call something we ourselves experienced in ye olden days when we were new systems (but from what we've seen, there's not really a limit to how long it can last, but it tends to be more common among newer and especially younger systems).

Basically, you ARE plural... to some degree. But in some way, you treat your headmates like characters, and it prevents them from ever actually solidifying into people, and leave them in this weird stage when they're half headmates and half, well, characters.

What causes it varies, but for our partner system, roleplaying their headmates (not their canon counterparts/AUs of them, that's different) was a *big* reason why. For us both? Convincing ourselves that they were "going back home" or literally travelling between headspaces. Of course they're not gonna have the opportunity to solidify into people when you sit around making up the Next Cool Adventure or create fake headspace drama to spice things up. We were roleplaying without meaning to roleplay.

Another thing we've noticed is when people decide that This Is How A Headmate Is, and then just... don't allow them to grow past that. Tony Stark has to be exactly like canon because otherwise he isn't Valid™. Homelander has to be an insecure, aggressive mess because otherwise he Isn't Homelander™. Joey has to be a punk who loves getting wasted, trolling people, and being rude to strangers, because that's how he was created, if he grows past that he isn't Joey anymore. Etcetc.

There are way more ways that someone can prevent their headmates from growing into people, and the examples listed aren't gonna affect everyone the same way either. But basically yeah, this is how we use the term.

TL;DR: Charamates are headmates that never grow into full people due to getting, intentionally or not, treated more like roleplay characters than people.
