Rose didn't even need to be a villain. He had noble intentions in trying to help Galar and even requested Leon's help, presumably to try and mitigate as much damage as possible. But tho the problem he feared was lifetimes away, he, for some reason, couldn't wait the single day Leon had requested, and kicked off the apocalypse early, throwing the region into a panic. It all just felt so forced and unnecessary to me, and had he waited, he could have had two Champions trying to help him corral Eternatus.

Are Sordward and Shielbert obnoxious and more comedic characters? Yes. Are they also more actually villainous than Rose? Also yes. While Rose had good intentions, these guys were just pissed that Sonia had uncovered the truth about the Darkest Day and that the brothers they were descended from weren't actually the heroes at all, but the Wolves were the true heroes, and were causing problems on purpose, even trying to force a Legendary to go out of control in the middle of a town, which could have gotten people seriously hurt or killed, just to make it look bad. Their actions are on a smaller scale compared to what Eternatus could do, but with their motives, they feel more like proper villains.

I love when pokemon games use a character’s team to tell us more about them.

Take Ghetsis from black and white 2 for example. Did you know that his Hydreigon can use the move frustration at maximum power? frustration is a move that gets more powerful the more a pokemon dislikes their trainer, which means that Ghetsis’ Hydreigon literally hates him.

Did you know that his Hydreigon is also a whole ten levels below when the pokemon would normally evolve? While this isn’t uncommon for NPC’s in pokemon games, you could make the argument that this specific instance of it suggests that Ghetsis somehow forced his pokemon to evolve earlier than it ever would have naturally, which isn’t exactly out of character for him.

I’m not even done with Ghetsis and his affront towards nature yet lmao. Did you also know that his Hydreigon is specifically designed to counter N’s team? Y’know, his own foster son.

It has dragon pulse for his legendary

Fire blast for his Vanillux and Klingklang

And focus blast for Carracosta, Zoroark and Archeops

He also has a Cofagrigus who can nullify the legendary’s ability with his mummy ability.

It’s very likely that no matter the outcome of N’s battle with us, Ghetsis was always going to turn on his son to take the dragon for himself. And looking at his team I could believe he would succeed.

Let's look at a slightly more recent example.

In pokemon sword and shield, chairman Rose actually does some preparations before waking up Eternatus, specifically it seems that he did some research into Eternatus’ typing (Poison/Dragon) and designed his team to counter it. He brought a full team of steel types to fight it, which are not only immune to poison but also heavily resist dragon as well. With everything he knew, it really was one of the smartest choices he could have made.

But if he was so prepared then how did Eternatus wipe the floor with him so quickly? Surely he could have easily defeated the legendary and capture it himself right? 

Well there was one thing Rose didn’t take into account when designing his team. One thing he couldn’t have possibly known, even with his extensive research into the creature.

Eternatus knows flame thrower.

He brought nothing but steel types.

He never stood a chance.

once upon a time i wanted to draw the pokebosses all as cats and i finally got around to finishing it 😼 i like the idea of interpreting them as regular #normal cats.... some thoughts and hcs for them below the cut bc its fun to stink about

giovanni- classic tuxedo tomcat. well taken care of but spends a lot of time prowling around... kind of the leader of the local outdoor cat community. social and charming but will always win a fight if challenged

maxie- very vocal siamese... usually stays indoors but occasionally goes out + likes to roll around in dirt. standoffish and doesnt like to be pet + gets into fights constantly with the annoying tabby next door

archie- scruffy long haired tabby who spends most of his time outdoors, esp by rivers to stare at the fish... very friendly to everyone but likes picking fights with the stuck-up siamese cat next door

cyrus- exclusively indoor tiny sphynx. glares at all the outdoor cats through the window on his tall perch

ghetsis- fluffy male tortoiseshell. nobody knows where he lives, seen outside a lot but always well-groomed and well-fed. charming so you let your guard down and then he swats when you least expect it

lysandre- massive purebred maine coon... extremely pampered and only gets the royal treatment from his owners of course. rarely goes outside and is grossed out by all the outdoor cats and their dirty coats

guzma- huge scruffy tabby, rare ghost coloration. escaped his home young and became the leader of a group of feral stray cats... aggressive and REFUSES to get caught by humans without putting up a fight

lusamine- purebred ragdoll... very fancy show cat part of a line of them- never ever goes outside but likes chatting with the outdoor cats through her custom built catio screen. always showing off her kittens

rose- purebred british shorthair, very friendly but out of touch and gets picked on by the other cats due to his pampering and rarely going outdoors. skittish and picky about his food

colress- russian blue. nobody knows if hes a well taken care of stray or an outdoor housecat, but travels far and wide and never stays put for long. the cats think he and ghetsis might be from the same household(?) but nobody knows the truth

In the PokeMas game, most of the first Team Leaders have a special suit. Except for Archie, Maxie and Ghetsis. Does Colress also count like a villain?

When the EX outfit color was revealed for the Hoenn villains, many artist joked saying they were getting married XD

It doesn't help the fact that they do spend time together alone in the island.

I would love to see interactions between Penny and her family: chairman Rose and Bede. At least in the manga they (Rose and Bede) are both in good terms. I don't know how the thing goes with Opal.
