NATIONAL JELLYFISH DAY
HAPPY NATIONAL JELLYFISH DAY ALL!!
I nearly forgot about it, but today's a day to celebrate all jellies of the world <3
Now, how can one possibly celebrate national jellyfish day when it is almost over?... Uh, to be honest I don't really know, but boy do I have a jellyfish for you guys to feast your eyes on ^-^!

Don't let her appearance fool you- she's not a jelly of the Netrostoma or Cephea genus- she's on a bonne-fide genus of her own, the Margavia stellata (named for the star-like patterns on its bell)!
It lacks the raised bump(s) that the other jellyfish in its family (Cephidae) have, but other than that resemble the basic Cephidae body shape. It's also probably one of the cutest jellyfish out there, in my opinion
#i've probably talked about her in an earlier post but here is a more formal ramble about her#margavia stellata#jellyfish#.professor jellyfish speaks#national jellyfish day#i'd do something bigger but unfortunately I'm swamped with uni this semester so this is all I can offer ;w;... sigh...

For many of us, engaging with insects doesn’t extend much beyond swatting away flies and mosquitoes, or calling on bigger and braver friends to deposit unwanted “visitors” outside. And yet, as E.O. Wilson observed, it is we who are the visitors in “a primarily invertebrate world.” In fact, humankind “depends so completely on these little creatures that run the earth.” But recent evidence shows a startling decline in insect numbers, with some insects facing the threat of extinction. This paints a worrying picture given insects’ vital role in ecosystem services, such as decomposing matter, maintaining insect populations, or as a food source for other species.
Our new blog series, “A World without Insects?,” reflects on the importance of our winged and multi-legged companions, and the bleak prospect of an existence without them. Scholars and practitioners from diverse fields, as well as engaged members of the public, share stories about their connections with insects from a global perspective, rooted in local experiences.
Spider wasp female (Pompilidae, Auplopus architectus)
Rose shoot sawfly (Cephidae, Hartigia trimaculata (Say))
Glowworm beetle (Phengodidae, Phengodes sp)
Moth mimics wasp from Trinidad.
Weevil from Costa Rica, Cartago.
If you have a story to share, consider submitting a contribution—the full call is available here.
Where Have All the Insects Gone? For many of us, engaging with insects doesn’t extend much beyond swatting away flies and mosquitoes, or calling on bigger and braver friends to deposit unwanted “visitors” outside.

screenshots that give me psychic damage
(And the reason why I never refer to the "Cephea cephea" as a Crown Jellyfish- this mixup makes me incredibly... Sad)
Class Schyphzoa has 3 orders:
Semaeostomeae (Flag mouths- basically anything with lace/fabric like oral arms)
Rhizostomeae / Blubber Jellies (Many mouths, have scrunkly oral arms and no true tentacles. May have some clubs hanging off of them)
Coronatae / Crown jellies (Have a groove at the top of the bell resembling a crown. has been gatekept out of the discomedusae sub-order)
Other familiar Cephidae jellies include the Mediterranean / Fried Egg jelly, or the Cotylorhiza tuberculata, which is not at all considered a crown jellyfish.
It's easy to mistake jellyfish for others as common names can overlap, but I hope you think about this ramble next time you see someone mistakingly saying that the Cauliflower jelly is closely related to crowns
Gonna end off the day with a thought
The Wiki Page for the Cephea cephea (Cauliflower jelly) kinda sucks. A lot of the information is taken from this sketchy looking kid's jellyfish facts website and I haven't been able to back up the claims it makes anywhere else. I'm heartbroken.
I want to believe that the cauliflower jelly is bioluminescent. I want to believe that it can be found as deep as 3,000 below the surface of the water (which is INSANE because I don't know of any other blubber jellies that go that deep).
I can't find ANYONE backing these claims up. I'm sad. I am trying to find jellyfish articles about it and most everything just references the Wikipedia article. I'm sad
#the cotylorhiza tuberculata is also often mixed up with a flag mouth jelly - the phacellophora camtschatica#Ive seen many articles talking about one jelly and putting a picture of the other (mostly for the Mediterranean jelly tbh)#anyways#They are pretty different#Maybe I'll make an informative post using my resident eggs#Heli and Rankou haha#reblog from myself#mun ramble#jellyfish
