MLB players dressing down Nike, Fanatics over new uniforms that look ‘like a replica’

The top story of spring training so far has nothing to do with the seams and stitches on a baseball. Instead, the talk of spring is all about the seams and stitches of the new jersey that Major League Baseball’s on-field uniform provider has rolled out for this season: the Nike Vapor Premier.

Nike claims the new jersey is softer, lighter and stretchier than the previous model. Many players say it’s worse. In clubhouses around the league on Wednesday, they criticized the jerseys’ poor fit, cheap look, inconsistent quality and small lettering.

“It looks like a replica,” Angels outfielder Taylor Ward said. “It feels kind of like papery. It could be great when you’re out there sweating, it may be breathable. But I haven’t had that opportunity yet to try that out. But from the looks of it, it doesn’t look like a $450 jersey.

“So far, thumbs down.”

At his locker, Angels reliever Carlos Estévez was in a tizzy over the new threads. He pulled out a couple tops and pairs of pants to show that the shades didn’t match. He laughed at the spacing and shrunken nature of the lettering on the back of the jersey. And he bemoaned the fact he can’t customize his pants to his preference, the way pitchers once could, tailoring the fit to their big dumpers and tree-trunk thighs.

“When I wear my pants, I feel like I’m wearing someone else’s pants,” Estévez said.

“I could see Estévez (flexing),” Ward said, “and it just ripping in the back.”

An airing of sartorial grievances that began earlier this week at the St. Louis Cardinals complex in Jupiter, Fla. has resulted in Nike, which engineered and designed the jerseys, and Fanatics, which manufactured them, facing blowback from big leaguers and baseball fans alike. The complaints prompted players to take their displeasure to their union, and the MLBPA is now involved in relaying the players’ concerns.

But anyone paying attention only to official channels would have little idea what the fuss was about. As that storm of criticism brewed in clubhouses, MLB and Nike ran a joint press release about the new jersey that included rave reviews from Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado (“It’s almost like wearing my favorite shirt out on the field”), Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman (“much more breathable, with vents on the numbers and better airflow all around”) and reigning NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. (“Feeling free in the jersey is the best feeling in the world”). All wear Nike gear in games. So do several other stars who have publicly praised the jerseys since Nike debuted them at the 2023 All-Star Game: Mike Trout, Kenley Jansen, Corbin Carroll and Jason Heyward.

Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson, who has a Nike endorsement deal, said he reached out to Nike contacts Tuesday to discuss the new jerseys. He’s all for the new materials, he said, but some of the design decisions — like the specific shade of blue on the Cubs jerseys — are worth reconsidering.

“Cubbie blue is its own blue, right?” Swanson said. “This blue on the uniform is a little bit different than Cubbie blue. So how can we just recapture that?”

Swanson’s broader point was that in the design process, Nike may have removed some elements that make each team’s jersey their own. In Cardinals camp, for example, they lamented losing the chain-stitching of player names on the jersey.

“You wouldn’t change the font of, let’s say, the (Atlanta) Falcons,” Swanson said, referring to his favorite National Football League team. “They have a little bit of a futuristic block lettering. That’s unique to their jersey. You wouldn’t then go put that on the New York Giants jersey.” He added, “With some of those things, it’s like this makes a Cubs uniform a Cubs uniform. It doesn’t need to change. I think that they will probably have to end up figuring out a way to kind of go back to what it used to be.”

It is unclear whether these uniforms will differ from those worn in the regular season.

Nike did not respond to a request for comment.

While the jerseys themselves have changed, the main parties in the creation process have been the same since Nike became MLB’s official on-field uniform provider in December 2019, reportedly paying more than $1 billion for a 10-year deal. (Under Armour initially won that bid, back in 2016, but that deal fell apart and Nike swooshed in.) Nike partnered with Fanatics — which had purchased MLB’s 2005-19 uniform supplier, Majestic, in April 2017 — to manufacture the jerseys. So the Nike jerseys are now produced by Fanatics, out of the same Pennsylvania factory where Majestic jerseys were once made.

Chris Creamer, who runs SportsLogos.net, explained in an email Wednesday that it’s surprisingly common for one company to create jerseys for another brand like Fanatics is now doing for Nike. When Fanatics takes over as the National Hockey League’s uniform outfitter this fall, the Fanatics-branded jerseys will be manufactured at the same Quebec factory as the Adidas ones NHL players are wearing this season.

“The money exchanged in these deals is really just for that brand’s corporate logo on the jersey,” Creamer wrote. “The leagues or the companies involved don’t seem too bothered by who is actually producing it.”

A Fanatics spokesperson declined to comment.

Nike claims that in designing the Nike Vapor Premier it “body-scanned more than 300 baseball players to dial in the ideal fit — more athletic and form-fitting than the previous chassis,” which is clothes-speak for template. But a common complaint among players is that Nike has limited the customization of jerseys.

Pitchers, in particular, are huffing about their pants. Before last year, according to multiple pitchers, they had several measurements taken for their pants, which then were tailored. Nike has since simplified the fitting process, and tailoring is not on the table. (“You’re telling me that Fernando Tatis is going to be on the field without painted-on pants?” a pitcher joked. “Robbie Ray with some baggy pants?”)

Some clubhouse managers have taken on the task of tailoring.

Yankees reliever Tommy Kahnle, who fans have given the nickname “Tommy Tightpants,” has leaned into the look. He reached into his locker for his new trousers Wednesday and gave them a “stretch test” with his hands. Not tight enough. Kahnle hadn’t actually put them on yet, but he knew.

“I like the old ones,” Kahnle declared.

A Dodger said he was swimming in his pants.

A Tiger loudly complained, “These pants they made are terrible.”

Among the design tweaks Nike made to this year’s jersey, according to Uni Watch’s Paul Lukas, are stretchier fabric, changing home jerseys from white to a subtle off-white, narrowing the placket (the vertical strip on the front of the shirt upon which the buttons sit), altering the belt loops, moving the MLB logo down on the back of the jersey and reducing the size of the last-name lettering. The latter change has fans fuming and players scratching their heads.

Tigers catcher Jake Rogers, who had no other complaints about the jerseys (“It feels good”), noticed that the lettering was visibly smaller this year. “You see an old jersey, my name was like this,” he said, gesturing with his hands, “using up a lot of room.”

“Look at the last names, bro,” Estévez said. “I’m 6-foot-6. This is going to look tiny on me.”

“I think the last names look really bad honestly,” a Cardinals player said. “I saw someone on Twitter said this looks like a Walmart jersey.”

Nike will sell three versions of the Nike Vapor Premier jerseys to fans: Limited Jersey (“inspired by the on-field jersey”), Game Jersey (“replica player jersey”) and Elite Jersey (“authentic jersey, as worn by player on-field”). Only the Limited jersey is currently available; an Acuña can be had for $174.99.

Now situated at Cubs spring training in Mesa, Ariz., Swanson has been sort of stuck in the middle, privy to both complaints from players about the jerseys and chats with Nike employees about them.

“It’s one of those things where there’s good and bad,” Swanson said. “It’s hard to sit here and just blast them about it or praise them for it. There’s stuff on both sides, and I think the beauty is they’re willing to have those conversations. Obviously, if it’s a change of anything, initial reactions are always going to be (strong). But I do think there are some things that could be altered to make it better.”

Whether or not Nike makes changes, this jersey looks different. It feels different. It’ll take time, however, to know whether the Nike Vapor Premier is actually better or worse than the version before it. When Majestic in 2016 introduced its “Cool Base” jersey — lighter, moisture-wicking, more flexible — they felt thinner and cheaper, Creamer said. There were design complications. There was criticism. But eventually, everyone moved on.

Reds catcher Luke Maile said changing jerseys is like changing toilet paper.

“You notice it at first,” he said, “but after a while, it’s just your toilet paper.”

Spies, Nazis, British and a risky love story set in Huelva in 1940, a city where the conflicts of World War II are reproduced on a smaller scale.

Synopsis

World War II has just broken out.

Although Spain is "neutral" under Franco's dictatorship, Huelva is a strategic enclave to control the ships of both sides that cross the strait. In addition, it has an important British colony. For this reason, the Germans send members of the Secret Service to control what happens in the city, especially in the mines in the province of Huelva, owned by the English, and which provide Great Britain with ore for weapons and artillery.

Filming

Operation Barrio Inglés will have as its settings the old dock of the English mining company and the area of ​​Tinto River and its open-pit mines, as well as the Bellavista neighborhood in the town of Minas de Riotinto, the port of Punta Umbría and the Mazagón beach in Huelva. In Sevilla, among other locations, it will be shot at the Monsalves Palace, and in other areas of the city and province, and also in different parts of Jerez de la Frontera.

About the mines and their location:

This is the Tinto river, its waters are red due to the high concentration of sulfur and iron oxides in the land (it happens the same with the red lagoon of Mazarrón's mines, Murcia), although it's duscussed if the mining activity has been increasing this characteristic, its water are very acid and are poluted with heavy metals.

The Tinto river (ancient name: Luxia) starts its flow in the Aracena Mountain Range and after 100 km joins the Odiel river (ancient name: Urium) at the height of the city of Huelva.

The mines have been exploited since pre-roman era, by Iberians and Tartessians, to obtein iron, copper, magnesium, silver and gold, which improved trading with the Phoenician, Carthaginian, and Greek colonies that were near to this site (in fact, the city of Huelva was founded by Phoenicians, and it was called Onuba), and eventually the Carthaginians took control of the mines after their expansion throughthe Iberian peninsula. Later, it became one of the most important mining areas of the Roman Empire.

By end of the 19th century, due to económico crisis the Spanish government sold several mines to English Companies, and one of them was the Riotinto mines, who were bought by the Rio Tinto Company Limited (RTC) in 1873, as they were looking for metals that were very demanded in the country due to its high industrialization (in contrast, in Spain the industrialization was scarce and the two main regions in which it was developed were Catalonia and Basque Country)

The RTC was the builder and owner of the railway line that connected the mines with the port of Huelva, where it built a mineral dock to facilitate the unloading and transport of the extracted material by sea to England.

In Riotinto, the luxurious and exclusive neighborhood of Bellavista was built for English personnel, it was a Victorian-style neighborhood that was endowed with tennis courts, golf courses, its own cemetery, a Social Club or even a Presbyterian church.

Huelva capital will also develop under the English influence. The numerous workshops and facilities built by the RTC that gave work to more than seven hundred workers, such as the railway station, changed the appearance of the city and contrasted with the rise of a new bourgeoisie of both Spaniards and foreigners who found themselves linked to the company. The power of the company became such in the city that civil buildings depended on the interests of the company.

Proof of this are the Reina Victoria neighborhood, as a garden city that welcomed part of its employees; the construction of Casa Colón, which ended up becoming the headquarters for the company's offices; the disappeared English Hospital; or the gigantic mineral pier located on the Odiel River. The English population introduced football, being the Huelva Football Club the first football team in Spain, founded in 1889.

In Punta Umbría, the British managers of the Rio Tinto Company Limited (RTC) erected rest areas for their employees. Since 1883 some constructions were carried out in the area, in wood and of the bungalow type, but it would not be until 1896 when the RTC was granted the possibility of establishing houses in this area, to which many RTC employees and their families went in summer to the beach through the Riotinto railway.

In 1943, the corpse of Glyndwr Michael, a Welsh homeless, disguised as a British Marine oficer called William Martin with information about a fake plan of the Allies to attack Greece was found drowned near the coast of Huelva, in Punta Umbría. This was part of the Operation Mincemeat to distract the Nazis and attack Sicily instead. Operation Mincemeat was a important plot in episode 3×02, Tiempo de Espías, from El Ministerio del tiempo. Well, although in the episode the original Operation is cancelled and a character named William Martin later takes the place of the original "William Martin", so the Operation success.

Years later, in 1954 the Riotinto mines returned to national property, under the CEMRT (Compañía Española de Minas de Río Tinto)

Los sindicatos docentes anunciaron un paro nacional el próximo lunes 4 de Marzo

Se trata de los gremios docentes que pertenecen a la CGT: Unión Docentes Argentinos (UDA), la Asociación del Magisterio de Enseñanza Técnica (AMET), el Sindicato Argentino de Docentes Privados (Sadop) y la Confederación de Educadores Argentinos (CEA).

Los gremios docentes nucleados en la Confederación General del Trabajo (CGT) -Unión Docentes Argentinos (UDA), la Asociación del Magisterio de Enseñanza Técnica (AMET), el Sindicato Argentino de Docentes Privados (Sadop) y la Confederación de Educadores Argentinos (CEA)- anunciaron su decisión de ir a un nuevo paro nacional, el próximo lunes 4 de marzo, luego de que el Gobierno boicoteara la reunión por la paritaria nacional docente.

«Responsabilizamos al Gobierno nacional por las medidas que tomamos«, dijo Sergio Romero, secretario general de la Unión de Docentes Argentinos (UDA), durante la conferencia de prensa que brindaron en la sede de la casa madre de los trabajadores, ubicada en Azopardo 802.

«Estamos volviendo a los años 90. Hoy no hay dos provincias que paguen el mismo salario», añadió Romero, acompañado por los triunviros de la CGT, Pablo Moyano y Carlos Acuña.

Los líderes sindicales rechazaron la postura del Gobierno, denunciaron la falta de respuestas en materia salarial y ratificaron la decisión de adoptar medidas de fuerza en todo el país.

“Fue una pérdida de tiempo porque no ofrecieron nada. Fue un diálogo de sordos, y hasta en un momento quisieron negar el ámbito paritario”, denunció Romero, en referencia a la reunión en el edificio de la cartera laboral.

“El Gobierno nacional se negó a responsabilizarse dentro del marco de la ley del financiamiento del sistema educativo argentino. Tuvimos una reunión sin ninguna respuesta», subrayó. Además, declaró que no les »han hecho propuestas», y que tampoco se trató la mejora del salario inicial del sector docente, que »hoy está en $250.000», algo que se reduce »aún más» y queda »alrededor de los $220.000».

De esta manera, Romero confirmó que esto »los obliga a tomar medidas», y advirtió que esto es el »inicio de un plan de lucha que se extenderá» en el caso de »no tener respuesta de parte del gobierno nacional».

El líder sindical formó parte de la comitiva que se reunió con el secretario de Trabajo, junto a los titulares del Sindicato Argentino de Docentes Privados (SADOP), de la Asociación del Magisterio de Enseñanza Técnica (AMET), de la Confederación de Educadores Argentinos (CEA), que estuvieron por la CGT, mientras que también participaron sindicalistas de la Confederación de Trabajadores de la Educación (CTERA).

Por su parte, el secretario general de la CGT, Pablo Moyano, que también estuvo presente en la conferencia de prensa, manifestó su total apoyo a los docentes: «La CGT no va a mirar para otro lado porque se está deteriorando el poder adquisitivo», expresó.

«A la CGT no la apreta nadie, no pudieron los militares, no pudo Macri y menos va a poder este cachivache que es empleado de las corporaciones», señaló, en relación al presidente Javier Milei.

Phoenix.- Los enfrentamientos de la postemporada de las Grandes Ligas están definidos, con los duelos por el comodín de la Liga Americana y la Liga Nacional arrancando hoy

Ronald Acuña Jr., Matt Olson y la potente ofensiva de los Bravos de Atlanta se han hecho acreedores de unos días adicionales de descanso y relajación tras el trajín de los 162 juegos de temporada regular en las Grandes Ligas.

Mismo caso para José Altuve, Justin Verlander y los vigentes campeones Astros de Houston –quienes ganaron el banderín de la División Oeste de la Liga Americana en el último día de la temporada– al igual que los Dodgers de Los Angeles y la admirable historia de los Orioles de Baltimore.

En cuanto a los ocho equipos restantes la acción de la postemporada llega de manera apresurada.

Los enfrentamientos de la postemporada de las Grandes Ligas están definidos, con los duelos por el comodín de la Liga Americana y la Liga Nacional arrancando hoy. Es el segundo año con el nuevo formato de octubre, que incluye una primera ronda con series al mejor de tres, con todos los juegos disputándose en casa del mejor clasificado.

En la Americana, los sextos clasificados Azulejos de Toronto visitarán a los terceros Mellizos de Minnesota, y los quintos Rangers de Texas viajarán a casa de los cuartos Rays de Tampa Bay. En la Nacional, figuran los sextos Diamondbacks de Arizona ante los terceros Cerveceros de Milwaukee, y los quintos Marlins de Miami ante los Filis de Filadelfia.

Los Bravos, Astros, Dodgers, y Orioles tendrán aproximadamente una semana libre antes de las series divisionales.

Las series por el comodín

Diamondbacks vs Cerveceros

Los Diamondbacks vuelven a la postemporada por primera vez desde 2017, a pesar de caer en sus últimos cuatro juegos de la temporada regular. El veloz novato Corbin Carroll lidera una alineación versátil, mientras que el diestro Zac Gallen está entre los candidatos al premio Cy Young de la Liga Nacional. La alineación de los Cerveceros es comandada por Christian Yelich, el ‘Jugador Más Valioso’ del 2018, y su rotación de lanzadores cuenta con un sólido trío conformado por Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff y el dominicano Freddy Peralta.

Marlins vs Filis

Los Marlins lidiaron con el mal tiempo en Nueva York durante el empuje final que les llevó a conseguir su comodín. El venezolano Luis Arráez ganó el título de bateo en la Nacional con promedio de .354, mientras que el zurdo venezolano Jesús Luzardo y Braxton Garrett encabezan la rotación ante la ausencia del as dominicano Sandy Alcántara, debido a una lesión que lo mantendrá fuera lo que resta de la temporada. Los Filis intentan regresar a la Serie Mundial –la cual perdieron ante los Astros el año pasado– y cuentan con una alineación profunda con Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Nick Castellanos y Trea Turner.

Azulejos vs Mellizos

Los Azulejos son un difícil sexto clasificado, con una de las alineaciones más profundas en las Grandes Ligas, incluyendo a Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Matt Chapman, George Springer, y Whit Merrifield. También tienen profundidad en el montículo con Chris Bassitt, José Berríos, Kevin Gausman y Yusei Kikuchi. Los Mellizos fácilmente fueron los mejores en la débil División Central de la Americana. Esperan que jugadores como el campocorto Carlos Correa y el tercera base Royce Lewis puedan regresar saludables tras sufrir lesiones en las últimas semanas de la temporada.

Rangers vs Rays
