mikasa’s first nights with the jaeger’s
-
Year 844
The first night she didn’t sleep at all. She could tell Eren was watching, so she curled her back and faced the wall until his breathing evened out. Then she sat up, drew her knees to her chest, and let her tears fall between them.
The second night she bothered to try. But with darkness came images so loud she scrambled to the corner of the room and pulled the curtains aside, hoping the moonlight would get rid of them.
On the third night sleep came in bits and pieces. Unable to fight it off any longer, Mikasa drifted in and out of restless slumber, slamming her eyes open with a gasp every hour, until finally, it wasn’t so hard to keep her eyes peeled.
“Mikasa.”
She startled to her left. She hadn’t even noticed Eren stir. But he was fully awake, legs dangling off his bed, his wide eyes blinking at her.
“Haven’t you slept?”
“A little,” Mikasa replied, sinking her face deeper into the scarf around her neck.
“I know you’ve been pretending.”
Mikasa wasn’t sure what to say to that, so the air hung in a heavy silence that only grew harder to bear each time they blinked at one another.
At last, Mikasa said, “It’s hard.”
“Are you getting nightmares?”
She nodded.
“If you want, I can wake you up when you start to have nightmares. Mom says it’s not good that you haven’t been sleeping.”
“But when will you sleep?”
“Don’t worry about me, I’m wide awake now.”
Mikasa shuffled uncomfortably, not entirely sure how to reject such outright kindness but sure she would not be able to sleep. When she didn’t respond quickly enough, Eren urged her, “Go on, lie down,” with that fierce determination Mikasa was becoming so familiar with.
So Mikasa lay down, and she closed her eyes. And she tried to sleep. Only this time, she was far too aware that she was being watched, and it became too much an effort to even pretend.
“I can’t,” she admitted after several minutes, eyes flying open.
“Thank goodness,” Eren scratched the back of his head with a guilty chuckle. “I was starting to get bored.”
His honesty got a surprised almost-laugh out of Mikasa, which got a wider, more confident smile out of Eren.
“Hey, wanna play a game?”
Mikasa sat up. “A game?”
“Yeah, my friend Armin taught me.”
Before Mikasa understood what was happening, Eren crossed the room and slid onto the foot of her bed, holding his hands out in front of him, palms facing up. “Hold your hands out like this.”
Confused but intrigued, Mikasa did as she was told.
Eren turned his own hands down facing the opposite way and hovered them right over hers. “Now, try to use your hands to slap mine.”
Mikasa’s eyebrows furrowed. “Like this?” Too slow, she slid her hands out from under his and attempted to slap them down, but Eren jerked his arms back, so Mikasa stumbled forward, elbows falling onto the bed.
Eren laughed softly, but his laughter held no traces of mockery or jest. Just kindness. And patience. “The trick is to use the element of surprise. Here, let me try.”
He scooted a little closer and held his palms up. Mikasa turned her hands over, placing them a couple inches above his. “You always want to go when the other person least expects it, so that–”
Mikasa felt a sharp sting on the back of her hands. “Hey!”
Eren laughed. “See?”
Though it really didn’t hurt at all, Mikasa shook her hands out and scooched closer to Eren. “Again.”
On they went, taking turns to slap each other’s hands, until suddenly, Mikasa’s hands came down too hard, and an actual yelp fled Eren’s lips.
Her eyes widened as he rubbed his hands together, wondering out loud, “How the hell did you get so strong?”
“I’m sorry.” Mikasa’s voice was barely a whisper.
Eren studied her. “It’s all right, I know you didn’t mean it.”
“Are you okay?”
“Huh? Yeah, it’s no big deal, really.”
And Mikasa remembered a time, not too long ago, when she’d been careless around her mother, and spilled some of her most expensive wine on a scarf she’d been working on for days, effectively and permanently staining it. Mikasa had been reduced to a puddle of tears and apologies, a mumbling, pathetic mess.
Oh, my sweet girl, her mom had cooed, after being cross with her for all of 3 seconds. It was an accident. It’s no big deal, honey. Really.
“You wanna learn another game?”
Mikasa blinked tears out of her eyes. For the first time, she thought of her parents and felt something more than just crushing pain. She nodded, not yet trusting herself to speak.
But if Eren thought anything of her inability to form words, he didn’t show it. He simply pulled her covers over his lap and kept talking. “This one’s called rock, paper, scissors. Have you heard of it?”
The next morning, Carla Jaeger woke with the sunrise, as she did most mornings. The past four days, however, she woke with a heavier heart, a reminder that the world was cruel for more reasons than just the monsters roaming outside the Walls. Grisha was still asleep, having retired to bed later than usual last night, locked away in his study. She took note of the rise and fall of his chest, the way his eyelids fluttered with slumber.
That was one.
Moving quietly so as not to wake him, she slipped out their bedroom and padded down the hall, gently pushing down on Eren’s door handle.
The past four days she’s opened this door to find Eren fast asleep, and Mikasa in a trance, awake but not fully there, eyes slowly blinking like they were coated in molasses. The little girl they’d all chosen to take in had watched her parents be killed, had almost been kidnapped, then had killed someone herself, with nothing but a knife and her two hands. To save her son, the way he’d done for her.
That was two and three.
Carla had cried the night Grisha brought them back, after tucking them into bed. Children should not have blood on their hands. Children should not have to fight for their lives.
She’d scrubbed them both clean. Wiped the blood from under their nails, got rid of their clothes, told them they’d never have to see anything from that night, ever again. Eren, putting on a boastful show of bravery, had told her it didn’t matter to him. That the men had deserved to die, that they were going to do horrible things to Mikasa, and it wouldn’t haunt him that he did what he had to to protect her.
Carla burned every article of clothing he wore.
Mikasa, refreshingly, went along with just about anything Carla asked her to do. She stripped her clothes off, let Carla brush her hair. The only time she’d hesitated was when Carla asked for the scarf, her fingers reflexively tightening around the fabric.
“Do you want to keep it?”
Mikasa met her eyes, not saying yes, not saying no.
“You can hold onto it,” Carla nodded encouragingly. “It’s all right.”
And then Mikasa had nodded, almost imperceptibly, but certainly there. Carla felt a rush of affection so strong and sure, she’d wanted to crush the child to her and promise her the world.
But she was traumatized and fragile, and Carla didn’t want to overwhelm her. Nor did she want to make promises she wasn’t sure she could keep, at least not until she talked to Grisha and Eren about it first.
Upon returning to the common room, however, Carla watched her husband stoop to Mikasa’s level and speak to her, his tone calm as usual, but gentler, softer, his hand coming down to pet the top of her head. She watched how Eren kept his eyes on her, how he rushed forward to accommodate her. You can sit here, he would say. There, this one can be yours.
Carla knew there was no discussion to be had. Overnight, their family had grown from three to four, and that was that.
On Mikasa’s fourth morning at the Jaeger house, Carla pushed the kids’ door open, thinking she would see the little girl once again, still awake, haunted by the memories of what had happened to her. Only this time, neither of the kids were in their usual positions.
Eren’s bed was empty, sheets thrown haphazardly to the side in typical Eren fashion. He lay on Mikasa’s bed instead, shoulder to shoulder with the girl he’d killed for. And Mikasa, for the first time since arriving to the house, found a deep sleep, her breaths even and heavy.
Relief and gratitude flooded Carla’s veins, and she was grateful for the support of the door handle to hold her weight. One day, she supposed, she would have to be more concerned about these two sleeping on the same bed. But today, they bore the innocence of children, the trauma of soldiers, and together, they’d found the peace of sleep.
Carla closed the door and let her forehead fall forward on it. A tear fell down the bridge of her nose.
This world was cruel. But please, she thought. Please, please, please, she hoped the day came where she would have to argue with them to sleep in separate beds.
(The day never came.)

What's funny to me is that because Grisha was the best doctor in Shingashina (not to mention, probably one of the few since it was the poorest area of the walls after the underground), he most likely not only attended Eren's birth, but also Armin's and Mikasa's births, so imagine that man's face when he heard the names of the babies he just received
"It's a beautiful boy, congratulations, Mrs. Arlet" "Thank you very much, Doctor Jaeger" "What name would you like to give him?😊" "Armin." "…"
My understanding is that Armin was born on November 3, 834 and Eren was born on March 30, 835, so Carla must have been approximately 4/5 months pregnant by the time Armin was born.
My theory is that when Grisha attended Armin's birth, he didn't think the baby was the Armin Kruger was referring to, since at that point he and Carla hadn't yet realized she was pregnant. However, when he discovered that they would soon have a child who would be the same age as the Arlerts' son and that they would also live nearby, he began to think that they would probably become friends and that Armin was the Armin mentioned by Kruger.

Happy Mother’s Day to the mother who deserved better
Tumblr media
Remember when Carla was the main motivation for Eren wanting to kill the titans in the first place? This is valid proof that despite their often bickering, he loved his mother a lot.
And Carla is the same. She directly told Shadis that she didn’t care if Eren was special or not; she said he’s special enough for just being her child.
Tumblr media
And how does this mother-son relationship get treated in the ending? By revealing Eren himself to be responsible for her death.
Tumblr media
I can still remember my reaction while reading the first time - I was like: ‘WHY THE F**K?!’
By that I mean if Eren were to have time travel abilities of any kind, I know he would’ve used it to try and save his mother! This is another reason why time travel shouldn’t have been a concept in the story in the first place! (Looking at you, Eren and Grisha moment)
Wasn’t Dina’s instincts to find her husband good enough of a reason to come across his house?
I apologise but I’ll never get over this forced plot twist alongside the Ymir Fritz stockholm syndrome thing. Carla really deserved better than this, and buy that I don’t mean a better son than Eren, I mean the ending chapter needing a do-over. 😞

TEXT Vol. 23 Mikasa’s Recipe
The “new Squad Levi” had made a remote home into their base of operations. There they hid Eren and the highly important Historia from a society that had been thrown into chaos as they feared the Titans who appeared within the
Walls, preparing to make their next move.
[Potatoes, carrots, meat, milk, flour, butter.]
[Wash vegetables well and cut into equal-sized pieces]
[Start simmering the toughest vegetables first…]
“Hm? Is this yours, Mikasa?”
“What…?”
As Mikasa performed ab exercises despite the injuries she’d sustained in the earlier battle, Sasha noticed a scrap of paper that had fallen out of her belongings and picked it up.
••••••
Mikasa trained atop the bed where she was supposed to be resting her wounds. Having realized that she had dropped something, she went to pick it up.
“Was that a scrap of paper from your notebook? It looked to me like something that had to do with cooking…”
Just as the ever-hungry Sasha said, it was a note that Mikasa had written carefully about ingredients and instructions for a recipe. She’d kept it in her military notebook, but it must have fallen out as she organized her belongings in order to live life undercover in civilian clothing.
“I don’t want to forget it, so…”
“I didn’t think you’d need to take notes to remember how to cook in the barracks. You had such good grades in our classes.”
“This dish… doesn’t have to do with training…”
On the inside, Mikasa was glad she’d found the note. She put it back in her belongings and recalled the time she learned to cook.
••••••
“Listen, Mikasa. You need to be careful when using a knife. Especially with meat… Yes, very good.”
Mikasa was still young that day. She’d joined Eren’s family for a short while after her parents had been taken from her, and there she lived in peace and quiet.
“What about this flour…?”
“You dissolve it into the butter and milk to thicken the broth. Be careful not to let it burn. Once the vegetables and meat are simmered, you mix it all together.”
Carla, Eren’s mother, was even kind to Mikasa, being every bit the mother to her as she was to Eren. When Mikasa asked to help her in the kitchen, she even taught the girl her specialty.
“This used to be popular at the store I worked at, too. The trick is to stay calm and mix well.”
“…Okay.”
As Mikasa awkwardly did her best to follow directions, the rest of the family gathered around.
“I’m home! Hey, something smells good!”
“Call your father over before you start stealing any bites, Eren.”
“Okay,” said the energetic voice, followed by footsteps running toward the underground office.
The young Mikasa wrote the recipe down when it became impossible for her to ever return to this home again, keeping the memories of her second mother alive .
••••••
Though Mikasa had been reminiscing all on her own, Sasha, who was sharp-eyed only when it came to food, seemed to figure out that when she said the memories had “nothing to do with training,” she meant they were from before the Walls came down.
“Yeah, some of those ingredients are really valuable now. It couldn’t be a recipe you learned in the military.”
“You read it…?”
“Just what I got a glimpse of!”
There was no particular problem in it being read, but it did seem somehow embarrassing. Like Sasha had pointed out, Mikasa understood most things after being told them once, so this seemed unlike her. Regardless of Mikasa’s expectations, though, Sasha smiled.
“There are a ton of recipes that I used to be able to make before the Walls were destroyed that I can’t eat now… Seeing that took me back.”
Sasha’s hometown would have thrown away their traditions because of the Titan invasion. As hunters, they must have had unique dishes.
“It’d be nice if you got to make that sometime. I bet it tastes great if you thought it’s worth writing down.”
“I… don’t know if I could make it well. But… when the person who taught me it made this… it was so…”
“You’re still in here?! The meeting’s about to start.”
“Oh! We’ll be right over!”
Though she was interrupted by Armin, who had come to call them over, she wasn’t bothered. Sasha was right. It would be a joyful thing if the day came when she could make the recipe again and serve it to someone else.
For now, though, it was still a distant dream. Mikasa made sure that her body felt alright before carefully leaving her bed behind.

Not long ago, someone here asked you for advice on how to make Megatron, who arrives alone in AOT, save little Mikasa in a believable way for their fanfic. But how do you think a situation like that would play out in an alternate AOP timeline? How do you think Mikasa's personality would change?
That would be @predacon27 asking for advice for their fanfic Paz y Tiranía (Peace and Tyranny).
But for this situation, lets say we are following predacon27's Peace and Tyranny interpretation of Megatron. Megatron gets really broken down and is completely traumatized. Ends up on the AOT World through shenanigans. And let's say Megatron is camping out in Wall Maria. He sees Mikasa unconscious and getting dragged away by three older men on foot.
Megatron would tail them and eavesdrop on their conversation and realize that Mikasa's about to be trafficked. And if Megatron is really broken down, I think he would take action and rescue Mikasa out of his own guilt. He can't just stomp on the house that they're in because it could kill Mikasa, so he decides to use his holoform. He goes in, and then kills the two guys that were in the house with ease. Megatron does kill the second guy in a way that gets blood on Mikasa's clothes and face.
And Mikasa just sees blood, her expression full of fear at this newcomer. Was he going to kill her too? Megatron simply kneels down and snaps his fingers at her to get her out of her daze. He demands to know where the third assailant is, but stops when said human barges into the room. He's ready to go after and try to kill Megatron, but Megatron is surprised when Eren shows up and stabs the third guy in the back with the knife tied to a broom stick. Megatron watches as Eren stabs him repeatedly for good measure. Eren then redirects his blood lust towards Megatron and tries to kill Megatron, but he simply grabs him and holds him by the arm as Eren is screaming profanities, telling Megatron to die like an animal.
Megatron: I'm not with these fools! I killed the other two! So stop trying to attack me and think!
Eren:...oh.
Megatron: Yeah! OH!
Megatron drops Eren, and Mikasa doesn't know what to do because there are now two murderers in the house. Eren notices her and runs to her before using the knife to cut the ropes that were binding her. Eren sees the blood on Mikasa and can't help but snap at Megatron for getting blood all over her.
Megatron: Are you fragging kidding me?!
Eren: My dad says unclean blood leads to the spread of diseases! OKAY?!
Eren ends up grabbing a bucket and collecting rainwater from outside before grabbing a cloth and using both to clean her face of blood. Eren then gives Mikasa his jacket and scarf to keep her warm. Eren still sees the shock on her face and tells her that help should be arriving soon.
Megatron tries to leave, but Eren stops him, arguing that they need to wait until his dad arrives with the Military Police. Megatron says he doesn't want to get involved, but Eren retorts, saying that there might be more of these guys. Megatron shoots back that it's not his responsibility to watch over them, and he doesn't want to get involved. The two continue to argue, and Mikasa, still overwhelmed by everything, starts crying at Eren and Megatron's arguing, gaining their attention.
Eren feels bad and meekly apologizes, going over to wipe her tears. Megatron, also feeling bad, decides to stay until the Military Police and the MPs arrive. The adults are shocked at the scene and immediately assume that Megatron killed all three of the sex traffickers. Eren was about to speak up, but Megatron quickly covered his mouth. Megatron decided to take the fall, but Grisha sees Eren getting silenced as suspicious. But because Megatron acted in self defense and rescued Mikasa, who was going to be trafficked, he's not arrested. Besides he would've escaped anyway by deactivating the holoform.
Grisha still scolds Eren for not listening to him and going head first into danger. Megatron is sitting on the steps of the house, and Mikasa is still standing, wrapped in Eren's jacket and scarf. Mikasa asks where she's supposed to go now that she doesn't have a home anymore. And Megatron confesses truthfully to Grisha that he can't take her. His living conditions aren't suitable for her. So Grisha and Eren offer her a place to stay. And Eren, emboldened, strides over to Megatron and says:
Eren: You're coming with us.
Megatron: Hah?
Grisha: Eren!
Eren: It's dark, and we need more people to go back home to Shinganshina.
Megatron: Do you really think I'm just going to listen to some puny little rat just because he says so?!
Eren: My mom will provide food and water.
Megatron: Don't need it.
Eren: A bed!
Megatron: Don't need it!
Eren: I'm sorry, who the hell's the rat here?! You feed on bugs or something?!
Grisha: EREN!
Megatron: Oh I can break your spine!
Eren: Then do it chicken!
Mikasa:...please...
Everyone turns to Mikasa, still trying her best to hide her gaze.
Mikasa:...please...I want to be safe.
Megatron:...groaning in defeat. Fine!
Carla nearly has a heart attack at the sight of two new people on her doorstep with her husband and son. Carla immediately tends to Mikasa, and Megatron tries to leave, but Mikasa catches him and calls for him. Despite everything she had been through today, she wouldn't be alive if it weren't for Megatron. She hugs him and says thank you, throwing everyone off guard. Megatron, not really enjoying physical affection, awkwardly pats Mikasa's shoulder. Mikasa lets him go and Carla and Eren continue to check on her. Megatron tries to leave again, but-!
Grisha: My son killed someone today, didn't he?
Megatron:...Your police wouldn't have believed he was capable of committing such a heinous act. Although, I'm assuming that you would want to keep that information between the two of us.
Grisha:...Carla can't know.
Megatron: Don't worry. You'll never see me again.
Grisha, debating:...Wait!
Megatron: What now?
Grisha: Could you come back?
Megatron: And why would I do that?
Grisha:...Mikasa needs you.
Megatron: Please, she barely knows me.
Grisha: She needs some form of stability. I can only go so far to provide that. I know we barely know each other, but if you can keep them safe, I can give you whatever you want in return.
Megatron: You barely know me, yet you're asking me for help...you're hiding something.
Grisha: So are you.
Megatron:...
Grisha: Again, I'll give you whatever you want. Or whatever I can give.
Megatron:...I don't need anything from you...but I'm curious about your secret.
Grisha:...I'll tell you my secret if you do this for me. But in my own time.
Megatron: Fine. Time is all I really have.
So the Jaegers have a bodyguard now. A few notes:
-So, at least for this version of events, I don't know what predacon27 is planning, Mikasa wouldn't awaken her powers. But she is severely traumatized and doesn't know how to cope. So she's pretty meek in this timeline for now.
-Megatron actually doesn't give his name. He does lie and says he doesn't remember it, so Eren thought it would be fun to give him a new name. It ends up being Matthew lol.
-Megatron and Eren's relationship is weird. They constantly bicker and insult each other, but Eren does look up to him and Megatron does respect the kid's tenacity. He gives him some advice when dealing with fighting bullies.
-Mikasa slowly starts following Megatron around because she feels safest with him. She'll actually cling to him for safety, which Megatron allows for a little bit, but seeing that she's not really growing past her trauma, he pulls her aside and tells her that he might not be around forever. She had to learn how to be brave and protect herself.
-Armin screams in fear when Eren shows off Megatron to him.
