From The Nature Conservancy:
Thirteen state and local ballot initiatives related to climate and conservation, totaling more than $18 billion, that The Nature Conservancy engaged in were approved by voters in the United States yesterday. “When the issue of conservation and climate is highlighted and elevated on the ballot, we find time and again that voters overwhelmingly support these initiatives,” said TNC’s Senior Director of Strategy Adam Snyder. “This year is no different, with 66% of voters supporting conservation and climate proposals.”
California: $10 billion climate bond that funds climate resilience, protecting clean drinking water and preventing catastrophic wildfires. Read TNCs statement here.
Washington: An effort to roll back the state's Climate Commitment Act was defeated. The CCA provides millions for conservation, climate and wildfire funding, including funding for Tribal nations and at-risk communities.
Minnesota: Renewal of the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund for another 25 years. The fund will provide $2 billion ($80 million per year from state lottery proceeds) to protect water, land and wildlife across the state. Read the statement here.
Suffolk County, N.Y.: Voters approved a ballot measure that will generate $6 billion for clean water and conservation over the next 30 years.
Colorado: Remove the cap for water funding from an existing tax on sports gaming revenue, which will generate an additional $2 to $5 million.
Dupage, Kane, McHenry and Lake counties, Ill.: More than $500 million for conservation and forest preserve districts to buy land, maintain existing public places and improve public recreation opportunities.
Jasper County, S.C.: A sales tax for transportation, which includes a greenbelt component for land conservation that totals $94 million over the life of the program.
Louisiana: Directing federal revenues received by the state from energy production (such as wind, solar, tidal, wave and other alternative or renewable energy sources) to the Coastal Protection and Restoration Fund.
Maine: A $30 million bond that will fund a four-year grant program aimed at enhancing and expanding the state’s trail networks.
Rhode Island: A $53 million environmental bond that will fund a variety of programs, including open space and parks, coastal resilience, forest management and restoration, farmland protection, brownfield reclamation and upgrading a port facility to support offshore wind development.

Get Your Perishables There Faster, Fresher: A Guide to Air Cargo for Food and Flowers
Tumblr media
Imagine this: you've sourced the most exquisite, locally-grown berries, or perhaps the rarest orchids from a hidden rainforest. These treasures are bursting with flavor and vibrancy, but getting them across the globe to eager customers presents a challenge. Fear not, fresh food and flower enthusiasts! Air cargo emerges as the champion for transporting these time-sensitive delights, ensuring they arrive at their destination looking and tasting their absolute best.
Speed Demon Delivery: The Air Cargo Advantage
Unlike its land and sea counterparts, air cargo boasts unparalleled speed. This translates to shorter journeys for your perishables, minimizing the time they spend in transit. Those plump berries won't have a chance to soften, and your delicate orchids won't wilt under the strain of a long voyage. Faster delivery means fresher products for your customers, keeping them happy and coming back for more.
Maintaining the Perfect Chill: Temperature Control Takes Flight
But speed is only half the battle. Perishables thrive under specific temperature conditions. The pressurized cabins of airplanes offer a unique advantage: precise temperature control. Imagine your berries nestled comfortably in a cool, controlled environment, arriving just as crisp and juicy as the day they were picked. The same goes for your orchids – they'll travel in perfect comfort, ready to bloom and brighten someone's day.
Reliability You Can Trust: A Global Network at Your Fingertips
Air cargo boasts a vast global network, connecting continents with frequent flights. This extensive reach allows you to deliver your perishables almost anywhere in the world, quickly and efficiently. No matter if you're sending seasonal berries from California to Japan or exotic orchids from Thailand to Europe, air cargo provides the reliable network you need to get your products where they need to be.
Packing for Success: How to Keep Your Perishables Safe
Just like a superhero needs the right suit, your perishables require proper packaging for their air cargo adventure. Insulated containers and temperature-controlled packaging materials are your best friends. Think of them as a cozy travel capsule, protecting your delicate cargo from temperature fluctuations and bumps along the way. For certain products, gel packs or dry ice might be necessary to maintain the optimal temperature. Remember, understanding the specific needs of your perishables, be it food, pharmaceuticals, or live plants, is key to ensuring a smooth journey.
Keeping an Eye on the Prize: Temperature Monitoring and Control
Imagine having a tiny guardian angel watching over your precious cargo. Well, with air cargo, that's a possibility! Data loggers and GPS trackers can be used to monitor temperature fluctuations throughout the journey. This real-time data gives you peace of mind and allows for quick interventions if needed. For longer journeys, actively controlled containers with built-in refrigeration or heating units can be employed, ensuring a consistently perfect environment for your perishables.
Navigating the Paper Chase: Regulatory Requirements and Documentation
The world of air cargo has its own set of rules, and ensuring compliance is essential for a smooth journey. Air Cargo Compliance (ACC) regulations dictate the documentation needed for your perishables. This might include detailed commodity descriptions, temperature specifications, and special handling instructions. For plant and animal products, phytosanitary certificates issued by the National Plant Protection Organization are often required. Don't let paperwork become a hurdle – understanding and completing the necessary documentation ensures your perishables arrive without any delays.
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: Coordination is Key
A successful air cargo adventure for your perishables requires a well-coordinated team effort. Clear and seamless communication between you, the shipper, the airlines, customs authorities, and logistics providers is crucial. Everyone needs to be on the same page to ensure efficient handling and minimal delays. Think of it as a well-rehearsed play, where each player knows their role and executes it flawlessly.
Finding Your Air Cargo Champion: Choose a Reliable Partner
Shipping perishables via air cargo requires a partner you can trust. Look for a global air freight forwarder with a proven track record and a commitment to best practices. They should offer expertise in temperature-controlled logistics and have the resources to ensure your perishables have a smooth and successful journey.
Freshness Delivered: The Takeaway
By choosing Nissin Belgium's air cargo transportation for your perishable goods, you're opting for speed, precise temperature control, and a reliable global network. Following best practices in packaging, temperature monitoring, documentation, and coordination will ensure your precious cargo arrives at its destination looking and feeling its absolute best. So, the next time you have time-sensitive food or flowers to deliver, remember, air cargo is your champion, ready to take your perishables on a journey to freshness success!

In Lieu of Twitter Going Dark
I wasn’t intending on doing this again on Tumblr, but given what could happen with Twitter, and people’s interests, I figured I would do a big charity thread for as much as I can fit in a post. I may have to split them into multiples, at which point I will edit this one to provide links to the others.
If you find this type of information important and want to learn about new charities (or submit others) I have a discord server that I will also link to in this to join. As always, the goal of this is to showcase places to donate your money or other resources to. Again, they might need more than money! Maybe they need a social media manager. Maybe they need someone else to offer rides or information. If you find yourself in a position to do something but you’re broke don’t let the money stop you.

Editor’s Note: Precious Ringor brings us a second artist profile, this time of Filipino American interdisciplinary artist and poet Lek Borja, whose work is an attempt to track the continuous colonization across time, first within the Philippines from Spain and the United States, through present day America and trying to give voice to Filipino life against a white hegemony. Precious displays how Lek crosses borders of cultural stereotypes, seeking to expand the visions placed on Filipinos by other oppressive powers, and inserting her culture in art spaces where they are new and unfamiliar, but for the community, reminders of home.

Getting to know someone virtually is one of the sad realities we’ve had to face because of COVID-19 regulations. It’s both a blessing and a curse—we’ve become a global village, but at the same time we’ve all had more eye and back problems from sitting around and zooming this past year.
A zoom call and an hour was all I had to get to know Lek Vercauteren Borja, a Filipino American interdisciplinary artist and poet widely known for her thought-provoking work into the Asian diaspora. Chatting with Lek didn’t feel like a job though; time flies fast when you’re having fun.
One of the things I noted was Lek’s warm and friendly nature. Most of the time, it’s uncommon for an interviewee to ask questions about the interviewer. Lek unabashedly admitted that she did a bit of ‘stalking’ before we hopped on Zoom, “I like to know about the person I’m talking with, even before the interview starts.”
Lek started in poetry. Armed with a love for Shakespeare, she pursued a dual concentration in Art and Creative Writing at Antioch University. It was there that she first fell in love with art history and sculpture. During that time, her first chapbook, Android, was published by Plan B Press. She took this as a sign to continue pursuing a career in arts.
As an artist, she admits that’s where she gets inspiration from, “I want to talk about the history of Filipinos, the invisible stories. Growing up in the Philippines and studying there, I realized there was a lot missing in our history books. It seemed as if it were written from a western perspective.” She reminded me so much of the Philippines, of home. Because of our similar upbringing, I immediately understood her search for truth.
The themes of home and longing, of memory and the present, and of giving Filipino lives new voices, carry across her work, and no more palpably than her piece Evolution of the Aswang Myth, what she calls “seed and the origin” to all her current works. Lek says “Without it, I wouldn’t be thinking about art, the way I’m making now.” This 8 x 8 feet painting explores the origins of the aswang or manananggal, a Filipino mythical creature typically depicted as a woman feared for its penchant for eating infants and unborn fetuses during the night. Interestingly, the aswang was also a word ascribed to the Filipina women who went against the forced religious conversion by Spanish friars during their colonization of the Philippines.
March 2021 marked 500 years since Spanish ships first arrived on the shores of the Philippines.
Since then, our country fought hard for liberation, first from Spain and then from the United States of America. In retrospect, it hasn’t been long since the Philippines became an independent nation. Today, we are striving to find our voice amidst the imperialistic erasure we’ve endured.
As Lek puts it, “What propelled me to tell these stories is the feeling that I had no voice. For one, I didn’t speak English well so I couldn’t really talk about what I was going through or how I felt. That’s why a lot of my work now focuses on bringing my experiences of living in the Philippines at the forefront and seeing how that’s connected to bigger conversations and narratives around us.”
Currently, Lek’s work called Anak (My Child) is being featured in the gallery at Towson University’s Asian Arts & Culture Center.
View Anak (My Child) Exhibit: https://towson.edu/anak
Besides online exhibitions and virtual galleries, Lek is also conducting several workshops in Baltimore’s upcoming Asia North Festival. These workshops are a good model for Lek’s philosophy in making art out of personal histories. Whether it’s experiences of displacement or change, she points out that everyone’s story matters and there will always be a community of people who can empathize with that.
“I think it’s really important for our stories to be brought to light in the larger narrative. They think by calling us model minority, our problems can easily be brushed aside” I lamented the steady rise of xenophobic crimes these past few months.
“I agree, it’s a really complex issue” Lek adds, “Why are we so silent? Why do we stand in the shadows? I’ll probably look for an answer my entire life. It’s hard to talk about our struggles and it’s not easy to have conversations about the past. There’s a culture of silence that’s been normalized and it’s perpetuated even in our own homes. But that’s part of the work I do, bringing everything from the past into the forefront so we can have deeper conversations about it.”
Speaking of the past, Lek’s introduction to the arts started in Tarlac, a city located north of the Philippines. Besides being known as the most multicultural province, the city is home to numerous sugar and rice plantations. “The population of our barrio was probably less than 1,000. Our family had a farm as well as a sugar-cane and rice field plantation. My inang [grandmother] also worked in the market as a butcher. It was a pretty simple country lifestyle but my childhood was amazing.”
Life in the country has been instrumental to Lek’s artistry. “The memory of the landscape and of the community is an extension of my art,” Lek explains. As a young girl, her biggest inspiration comes from her grandfather who, like herself, was also an artist. Lek would copy his drawings and eventually create drawings of her own. Recently, Lek has started to incorporate banana leaves into her work. Banana leaves are incredibly important to Filipino culture as it is used for cooking and traditional homebuilding.
“Sounds like you had to find your own path, coming here at such a young age and experiencing culture shock. America is very different from the Philippines!” I quipped.
“It was snowing where I first came here!” she exclaimed, thinking back to her initial introduction of America. “It was November when we landed in New York, it was freezing. I remember our families bundling us in huge warm winter coats before wecould even say hello. It was definitely a huge shock.”
I laugh, thinking back to when I first arrived in California ten years ago. Silly to think I was already freezing in sunny temperatures when she had to endure piles of snow. “Do you think you’ve had to change yourself in order to adjust to that culture shock?”
“For a long time I really didn’t know who I was,” Lek admits. “When I was younger, the school I went to was predominantly white. What I thought about how I should present myself came from that image. I dyed my hair blond and put on blue colored contacts to fit in. It was a lot of assimilation and cultural erasure. I started talking less Tagalog and less Ilocano. But art has really helped me find myself. It made me think more deeply about who I really was and what was important to me on an authentic level.”
Halfway through our conversation, we slowly realized just how similar we were. From migrating at the age of ten to living twenty miles apart in the same city. It was also in chatting that Lek found out I spoke Tagalog fluently, one thing she regrets losing unexpectedly. As it is my first language, Lek asked me to speak it instead. Once again, her warm nature bled through the Zoom interview; I found it refreshing since hardly anyone thinks about the interviewer’s comfort.
Unsurprisingly, community building is important to Lek. Before working, she likes to ask herself the following questions, ‘How is what I’m doing connected to my family and everyone in the Filipino community? How can I better serve my community?’ One of the main reasons she moved to L.A. is to network with other Filipino artists.
“A few years ago, I showed my art alongside a group of all Filipino artists at Avenue 50 Studio gallery for an exhibition that Nica Aquino and Anna Calubayan organized (also both Filipinas). It’s crazy because I’ve lived in and out [of L.A.] for over 10 years now and it was only in 2019 that I started to be part of that community. It’s probably the most fun I've had at an art show, I really felt at home.”
“I’d love to visit the studio’s galleries once it’s safer to go outside”
“Definitely! I’ll keep you updated on any gatherings” Lek pitched excitedly.
“And I'll bring you guys homemade ube cakes and puto pao!” I teasingly replied back.
As our call came to a close I couldn’t help but ask Lek if she had any advice to give to budding AAPI artists.
“I’ll echo what people who have supported me have said in the past: trust yourself and trust that you can make a difference. It’s hard to figure out who you want to be when [the world] has expectations and demands from you. We’re lucky to live in a time where there’s so many possibilities. Figure out what you want to do authentically and genuinely, and go for it.”
Lek continues on, “Personally, it took me a long time to find my voice. When I was in grad school, I had a lot of doubt in myself because most visiting artists and curators couldn’t understand my work. What made it all worth it were the moments that people got [my voice] right away.”
Getting to know Lek and learning about her commitment to showcasing invisible stories has been awe-inspiring; it made me proud to be a Filipino American artist. And in the wake of our hurting AAPI community, I believe it’s incredibly important, now more than ever, to highlight and support works of people like Lek. People who have had to fight for their voice in this world, who our youth could look up to and be inspired to become.

Giuseppe Penone at Fort Mason, San Francisco
October 8, 2019
Tumblr media
GIUSEPPE PENONE Fort Mason October 24, 2019–October 25, 2020 Great Meadow, Upper Fort Mason, San Francisco __________ The bifurcations of the trees that appear so intimately human to us . . . The bifurcations of the fingers, by their movement through space, form the branches, the roots, and by the succession of actions in the same points, construct the branches and trunk of the plant. The woodland landscape is the action of sculpture. —Giuseppe Penone Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy have partnered with Gagosian to present a yearlong outdoor installation by Giuseppe Penone through the Art in the Parks program. Fort Mason is a historic site within Golden Gate National Recreation Area where hundreds of trees were planted by the military between fifty and one hundred years ago. The National Park Service (NPS) stewards the site’s cultural landscape. Bringing art into the context of our national parks not only allows us to share these spectacular and inspirational works with park visitors; Giuseppe Penone at Fort Mason invites us to take a closer look at our parks’ relationship with nature through the site’s history and at the ongoing stewardship of preservation and conservation. —Charles Strickfaden, Chief of Communications, Golden Gate National Recreation Area From his earliest site-specific sculptures made in the forests around his hometown in Piedmont, Italy, Penone has adapted elements from the natural world, exploring the deep evolutionary interdependence between sculpture and nature across geological time. The dramatic installation in the Great Meadow at Fort Mason is Penone’s first public work on the West Coast. In Idee di pietra (Ideas of Stone) (2004), large river stones nestle in the high branches of a bronze sculpture cast from a tree, as if weighing down the natural reach of the tree towards the light. The tree stands tall and straight; its narrow silhouette supporting the stones high into the air suggests a force resisting the planetary burden of gravity. A second cast bronze tree, La logica del vegetale (The Logic of the Vegetal) (2012), lies on its side, its gnarled root system fully exposed. Five living saplings native to California (valley oak, coast live oak, bigleaf maple, and two California bay laurels) will be planted at the tips of the sculpture’s bare branches, allowing exuberant growth to sprout up around their bronze counterpart. The mission of Art in the Parks is to provide programs that are transformative, unexpected, and inspirational. We’re delighted that Giuseppe Penone’s work will be on public display at Fort Mason and related works are being exhibited this fall at Gagosian downtown. Our hope is that these concurrent exhibits further illuminate how Golden Gate National Recreation Area serves as a backdrop to all kinds of beauty and meaningful visitor experiences. —Kate Bickert, Senior Director, Parks Conservancy
The areas protected by the National Park Service have long provided inspiration for artists; in return, the park sites have used art to deepen the public’s enjoyment, appreciation, and understanding of these precious natural resources. Thus Penone’s compelling sculptural investigation of the perpetual give-and-take between humans and nature offers a poetic analogy to the evolution of the park itself. Giuseppe Penone was born in 1947 in Garessio, Italy, and currently lives and works in Paris and Turin, Italy. His career began in the 1960s with the Arte Povera movement in his native Italy. This radical group of artists employed “poor,” unconventional elements and raw materials to question cultural assumptions and evoke a preindustrial age, critiquing dehumanizing systems of industrialization and mechanization, as well as contemporaneous art movements. Penone’s earliest works made in the forests around his hometown in Piedmont marked the beginning of an enduring fascination with the arboreal realm that is still prevalent in his work today. Collections include the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Exhibitions include Musée des Arts Contemporains du Grand-Hornu, Belgium (2010); Drawings and Sculptures, De Pont Museum, Netherlands (2010); 22 Opere a Versailles, Château de Versailles, France (2013); Ideas of Stone (Idee di Pietra), Madison Square Park, New York (2013–14); Being the River, Repeating the Forest, Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas (2015); Anafora, Reggia di Venaria Reale, Italy (2016); and Matrice / Matrix, Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, Rome (2017). In 2017, Germination, Penone’s permanent, site-specific installation for the Louvre Abu Dhabi, was presented at the inauguration of the museum. Penone has received numerous accolades, including the Praemium Imperiale, Japan Arts Association (2014). About Gagosian Larry Gagosian opened his first gallery in Los Angeles in 1980, expanding his reach to New York five years later. Since then, Gagosian has evolved into a global network of seventeen exhibition spaces in North America, Europe, and Asia. In addition to its vibrant contemporary art program featuring leading international artists, Gagosian also presents unparalleled historical exhibitions, including a series of groundbreaking, popular surveys on the art of Pablo Picasso. The gallery publishes scholarly exhibition catalogues, artist monographs, catalogues raisonnés, and the Gagosian Quarterly, an innovative and engaging magazine on the gallery’s art and artists as well as related topics in contemporary art. About Art in the Parks Giuseppe Penone at Fort Mason is a presentation of Art in the Parks—a cooperative effort of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the Presidio Trust, and the Headlands Center for the Arts—and Gagosian. The mission of Art in the Parks is to provide programs that introduce visitors to creative experiences that are transformative, unexpected, and inspirational. Recent programming such as @Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz, the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Big Blue Whale at Crissy Field, and PianFrancisco at Fort Point helps visitors connect with the history and stories of national parks. About the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is the nonprofit membership organization that supports the Golden Gate National Parks. Since 1981, the Parks Conservancy has provided over $550 million in aid for transformations, habitat restorations, research and conservation, volunteer and youth engagement, and interpretive and educational programs. On Friday, January 24, Take on Wall St, a campaign of Americans for Financial Reform, hosted an illuminating symposium in Washington D.C. to examine public banking and related ideas that could transform our financial system. Among the wide-ranging proposals discussed were a plan for postal banking, individual Fed accounts, and a National Investment Authority that would create a “public Blackrock.”
Public banking successes and challenges were shared by Trinity Tran and David Jette of the California Public Banking Alliance and Ali Issa of Public Bank NYC. UC Irvine Law Professor Mehrsa Baradaran, a member of the Public Banking Institute Advisory Board, spoke about postal banking and how it could service the needs of the unbanked. In attendance and participating in the afternoon roundtable discussions were Thomas Hanna, another PBI Advisory Board member, as well as PBI’s Development Director Marc Armstrong and Communications Coordinator Suzanne O’Keeffe.
Panelists brought to light many innovative ideas and raised compelling issues. Raul Carrillo of Demand Progress and Americans for Financial Reform suggested at one point the meeting was the Alt-Davos.
Marcus Stanley, Policy Director of Americans for Financial Reform, brought perspective to the conditions creating the need for this symposium, among them that the gap in geographic inequality has grown much wider since the financial crash.
Saule Omarova, Cornell Law Professor, spoke of the rationale for a National Investment Authority, which she and her colleague Robert Hockett, another PBI Advisory Board member, have proposed. She explained that the NIA would be a hybrid, patterned in part after the New Deal era Reconstruction Finance Corporation, which would create funds of private money managed by the public devoted to financing proposals serving public needs.
Lev Menand, Columbia Law Academic Fellow and Lecturer, described a FedAccount proposal he helped devise along with Morgan Ricks and John Crawford, under which the Fed would allow individuals to hold accounts at the central bank and benefit from the same higher interest payments, instant clearing of payments, and other perks that banks alone currently receive.
Mehsra Barandaran and Steve Dematteo, Executive Assistant to the President of the American Postal Workers Union, discussed the urgent need for postal banking, which could save unbanked or underbanked families the exorbitant fees they’re currently forced to pay for simple check cashing services. Low income people spend $89 million yearly on financial services, more even than the US government spends on SNAP programs. Post offices are ubiquitous — there are more post offices than Starbucks and McDonald’s outlets combined — and every post office is already connected to the world’s post office payment remittance network, which could be turned on tomorrow.
Raul Carrillo discussed the surveillance system built into the financial system FinTech is constructing with efforts such as Libra, with the intent of harvesting the data of users of their private digital cash system. We need instead a public option that provides real privacy.
In the community organizing arena, California Public Banking Alliance advocates Tran and Jette emphasized the role of coalition building in their recent legislative success. Public Bank NYC advocate Issa echoed that sentiment and discussed how social justice needs in New York City are driving a growing interest in alternatives to the current financial system. As example, he discussed 12 community land trusts have started in NYC in the past few years.
The proposals and issues are exciting developments that speak to the expanding effort to turn our financial system from one catering only to the ultra wealthy into a democratic system operated for the benefit of our communities.

Mythbusters Host Jessi Combs Dies After Attempting To Break Speed Record
Jessi Combs, a professional speed racer and former host of “Mythbusters,” died Tuesday in a crash on a dry lake bed in Oregon’s Alvord Desert as she was in a jet car attempting to break a land speed record, authorities said.
She was 39.
Tumblr media
The Harney County Sheriff’s Office said it was called to the scene of the fatal crash in the desert about 90 miles south of Burns, Oregon, around 4 p.m. Tuesday. Combs, who was nicknamed “the fastest woman on four wheels,” was pursuing a record on the dry lake bed, her family said in a statement.
Combs was the lead driver on the North American Eagle racing team. She was identified as the sole fatality connected with the accident, which is under investigation. The section of the Alvord Desert the team was using was approximately 8 miles long, authorities said.
The North American Eagle is a supersonic vehicle made from the fuselage of a jet plane, according to the team’s website. Combs had previously driven the vehicle on the Alvord dry lake bed in September 2018 but a malfunction had caused the door to rip off midrun, forcing her to abandon the session.
Lt. Brian Needham said there had been no known deaths in the desert while drivers attempted land speed records during his 23-year career with the sheriff’s department.
“Jessi’s bright smile, positivity and tenacious pursuit of her dreams inspired everyone who met her,” Combs’ family said. “Her drive and spirit were infectious, and she served as a role model for young girls and women around the world.”
On Tuesday, Combs was attempting to break the Women’s Land Speed Record of 512 mph, set in 1976 by Kitty O’Neil.
She was surrounded by her friends and her family at the time of her death.
“People that loved her and followed her became family, all bonded together by adventure and passion,” her family said. “Her fans adored her, and she lived to inspire them.”
Her most notable dream, one that she had been chasing since 2012, was to become the fastest woman on earth, according to her family.
“Combs was one of the rare dreamers with the bravery to turn those possibilities into reality, and she left this earth driving faster than any other woman in history,” the family said.
Terry Madden, Combs’ partner, and teammate said Combs died “in a horrific accident” and that he “was the first one there.”
He said he “did everything humanly possible to save her.”
“I’m not OK, but she is right here keeping me going,” Madden captioned an Instagram collage of video and photos of Combs.

So I don’t know how to say any of this but it all needs said. I have never loved or been loved by anyone as much as this amazing woman @thejessicombs she was truly my unicorn and I enjoyed every single minute that I had with her. She was the most amazing spirit that I have ever or will ever know. Unfortunately we lost her yesterday in a horrific accident, I was the first one there and trust me we did everything humanly possible to save her!! I’m not ok, but she is right here keeping my going-I made her a promise that if this didn’t go well that I would make sure and do good with it, please help me with that, you are all going to see things on news please believe non of them.. we the family have drafted a release and it will come out today with more proper info, but I was just woke up by the media tracking me down and I need everyone of her true friends to do what she would want “take a deep breath, relax” and do good things with this. Please donate to nothing, I know there will be people try, we are finishing the documentary as she wished and the world will know the truth and her foundation will use those funds to do amazing things in this world and make her legacy live on properly. In the coming days her family and I will get the proper channels put together that you can then donate to that foundation but until you hear it from me wait please-I don’t want some asshole profiting off this (all ready had one try to sell us a video)… . . Love you all and thank you all for being such amazing friends to her, she dedicated her life to helping support others dreams and I promise I will continue that.

Former “Mythbusters” host Adam Savage tweeted: “She was brilliant … builder, engineer, driver, fabricator, and science communicator, ” who “strove every day to encourage others by her prodigious example.”
I’m so so sad, Jessi Combs has been killed in a crash. She was a brilliant & too-notch builder, engineer, driver, fabricator, and science communicator, & strove everyday to encourage others by her prodigious example. She was also a colleague, and we are lesser for her absence.
— Adam Savage (@donttrythis) August 28, 2019
Kari Byron, another former star of “Mythbusters,” remembered Combs for her toughness.
“So sad to hear about Jessi. She was a badass. Always pushing limits. Sending smiles into the universe for her,” Byron said in a tweet.
Combs was born in Rapid City, South Dakota, and lived in Long Beach, California, according to a biography on her racing team’s website.
She not only appeared on Discovery’s “Mythbusters” but also on the network’s “Break Room,” as well as “Overhaulin'” and “All Girls Garage” on Velocity.

Saturday Morning Coffee
What a week! That dude that took over Twitter is driving it in the ground with a gigantor hammer all while we watch from the cheap seats sipping our soda and eating popcorn. What a spectacle.
This week was a busy week at work, promotion time. Lots of meetings. I’m all Zoom’ed out.
Enjoy that morning elixir of life. I certainly am. ☕️
Tumblr media
Wired
Eugen Rochko looks exhausted. The 29-year-old German programmer is the founder of Mastodon, a distributed alternative to Twitter that has exploded in popularity in recent weeks as Elon Musk’s ownership of the platform has rained chaos on its users.
I’ve heard some folks doubt the survivability of Mastodon and doubt hate can be squashed there. In my experience on the platform it’s quite the opposite. If you’re running a server full of racist white nationalists, Nazis, or other hate groups it’s extremely easy for the admin of your server to block federation of that entire server.
I’ve found Mastodon to be so much better for conversation with folks outside my little friend bubble on Twitter.
Brent Simmons
For writers, artists, podcasters, journalists, and people who make things in public, Twitter was the one social networking site we all had to use.
Brent is a long time blogger, Mac programmer, creator and leader of the NetNewsWire team, and all around great guy. If you’re a consumer of RSS point your feed reader to his site. It’s a great read.
Platformer
Musk went on to say that “Twitter will be much more engineering-driven,” and that while design and product “will still be very important,” engineers “will have the greatest sway.” And then Musk presented employees with an ultimatum: click “yes” on a Google form affirming your desire to “be part of the new Twitter,” or leave in exchange for three months’ pay.
I’ve heard from a friend that most of the US Engineering staff left. That’s just wild.
Last week, I made the decision to leave my role leading Trust & Safety at Twitter. Today, I'm sharing a few thoughts about what comes next for the site. https://t.co/QPAQR6zpqU
— Yoel Roth (@yoyoel) November 18, 2022
I don’t have a NY Times subscription but I’ll bet this piece by Mr. Roth is quite good.
Daring Fireball
If you had told me three weeks ago that Twitter, as a company, would today be embroiled in turmoil — perhaps outright existential crisis — over a company-wide email from Elon Musk centered around the phrase “extremely hardcore”, v-1 is not the scenario I’d have imagined.
In my career I’ve worked for some hardcore companies, like the old Microsoft, it’s not fun. Don’t do it.
NEW: Email from Elon to the engineering team: "Anyone who can actually write software, please report to the 10th floor at 2pm today. Before doing so, please email me a bullet point summary of what your code commits have achieved in the past 6 months" 1/
— Zoë Schiffer (@ZoeSchiffer) November 18, 2022
I don’t understand why he continues to ask for snippets of code from his employees. It’s just some random metric he’s using to what what end? What about the devs who made Twitter better by removing code?
CNN www.cnn.com/2022/11/1…
Amazon confirmed on Wednesday that layoffs had begun at the company, two days after multiple outlets the e-commerce giant planned to cut around 10,000 employees this week.
It’s been a rough couple weeks in the tech sector. I’m sorry to see so many folks having to deal with this. Here’s hoping they land on their feet quickly.
Fresnoland fresnoland.org/2022/11/1…
While Central Valley agricultural leaders warn of jobs loss during California’s ongoing drought, some local leaders say it’s time for less water-dependent economic opportunities.
California is in deep trouble so the United States food supply is in deep trouble. You’ll see it at the grocery store.
Becky Hansmeyer
When I tweeted my way into the iOS community so many years ago, I felt the same energy and excitement, if not necessarily the same level of closeness. You all gave me the confidence I needed to keep going with programming when I felt like giving up. We’ve person. Like her I lament the loss of the Twitter we knew but all good things come to an end, right?
America, America
I’m not anywhere close to assuming redemption for Rupert Murdoch or his publication for their role in empowering the dangerous desecration of the last six years, particularly since Fox News showed reluctance in quitting the man by airing nearly all of his sour announcement. (For me, the announcement at Mar-a-Lago had more of the air of a man running from the law than running for the presidency.)
How TFG avoids jail time at this point is beyond me.
The Register
Microsoft Azure CTO Mark Russinovich has had it with C and C++, time-tested programming languages commonly used for native applications that require high performance.
Russinovich is a legendary software engineer. It’s gonna be interesting to see how many new products come out of Microsoft and other companies written in 100% Rust.
The Brookings Institution
In this second edition of our October 2021 report, we review the investigation and its basis. We assess the publicly known facts and relevant law and analyze the extent to which the former president may be held criminally responsible for his conduct in Georgia. We conclude that Trump is at substantial risk of criminal prosecution in Fulton County.
At substantial risk? How is he not already in handcuffs? If any of us “regular” people had done this we’d be thrown in a dungeon.
Jalopnik
Haas’ Kevin Magnussen just scored his first-ever pole position in Formula 1 during the Brazilian Grand Prix. Yes, I intended to write that sentence. It’s not April Fool’s Day. Kevin Magnussen is polesitter for Saturday’s sprint race.
I support Haas. It’s an American F1 team and I’m happy for Kevin Magnussen and Haas. Now, get some podiums! 😂
PZ Meyers
Between the Church Militant and Nick Fuentes, it’s pretty clear what the theocratic Right wants to do: they want to kill you or force you to be as mad as they are.
Nick Fuentes is a piece of work but at least he’s not hiding his White Christian Nationalism behind dog whistles, no sir, he’s just saying it out loud.

Go check out that tweet thread. It’s full of Twitter Employees saying goodbye after the hardcore time limit expired.
It’s a sad day for the social network. How long will it stay up?

California Voters:  Vote YES on Proposition 10--Fairness to Renters paying in excess of 30% of their income on rent.
Make it clear to greedy developers and unscrupulous landlords that the rent is too damn high!  We’re counting on grassroots supporters to step up and vote for Proposition 10 on November 6. Your vote and your voice COUNT! Give the right of city self-determination back to each city government = local control.  People on fixed incomes like retirees, veterans, and others require reasonable rents.  Median home values have increased by 80% since 2011.   More than half the renters in the state of California spend MORE than 30% of their income on rent (Haas Institute for Fair & Inclusive Society, UC Berkeley).

This is Freedom
Understand as well, and with perfect clarity, that America is truly still the greatest nation on Earth in that we can hear Emma Gonzalez’s speech so clearly, and have it commemorated and publicized and discussed without fear of it being forgotten or silenced.
And know that the tiny shred of fear that you now have as you consider that reality is a sign of where we are in history today.
The footage exists thanks to CNN, a studio that has been attacked and slandered repeatedly by our own president. He has made it expressly clear, on multiple occasions, that if he had the power to silence them and dismantle  them, he would. The footage has been witnessed because American innovation, technology, and free and open access to the internet (barring device purchase and network charges, but that’s a hill we’re still climbing) is permitted and encouraged, and not policed. The footage can be captured because a free media and a technologically-advanced people have created channels of communication and transportation, enabling reporters to move between cities within hours, and enabling people in California to hear and pay attention to happenings in Florida within seconds. A young woman, a girl, not even graduated from high school, is able to stand and speak and be taken seriously because of the efforts of women who came before her in history, women who were silenced by brute strength or stigmas, but who kept pushing so that one day, a girl like her could not only speak her mind, but reach the minds of others. She has been educated in a public school, funded by the government, taught by teachers, given books and training and everything she needed to reach this point, all because we live in a land of freedom.
This would not be possible in the Soviet Union. Or Nazi Germany. Probably not even in modern-day China. And it certainly would not have been allowed in the United States in the past. Powerful figures would have been able to silence her one way or another. They could discredit her. Have “experts” rebut her words, lean on journalists to parse her quotes, simply bump her story to the back page of the newspaper. Even television could have seen her silenced or taken out of context. I guarantee people are already attempting to discredit her, and I assure you, no fewer than three threats have been made against her. I fear for her safety, in fact, because this is the land we live in. This is the world we live in.
But that’s where her courage comes in.
Miss Gonzalez knows what this means. She’s seen it all. She watched a woman dare to run for president and be mocked and slandered consistently from all sides. She’s watched a mayor explode in fury against a President for failing to send aid, and seen the President work to slander her and insult her. Miss Gonzalez is clearly intelligent, and has done her homework, and knows what the consequences of this speech are.
Nevertheless, she persisted:
“If the President wants to come up to me and tell me to my face that it was a terrible tragedy and how it should never have happened and maintain telling us how nothing is going to be done about it, I'm going to happily ask him how much money he received from the National Rifle Association.”
She stood up there, a seventeen-year-old girl, and called out the President of the United States and the ruling parties of Congress with fire that would earn the envy of men such as Thomas Paine or Benjamin Franklin. Cowards on the internet may twiddle their thumbs to respond to her with fire and irritation, but Miss Gonzalez stood on a podium, surrounded by hundreds of onlookers, and has now been seen by millions of eyes. Some watch with rage, others dispassion, perhaps even a few with fear, but most--mine included--are certainly watching with pride and awe.
This is the America we live in.
A nation that has come this far, and yet still has further to go, a place where heroes are found not only in war, fire, or flood, but in the open light of day. The crowd could have booed, could have murmured, could have rushed forward and thrown her to the ground, but she had confidence and trusted that she was saying the right thing:
“The people in the government who were voted into power are lying to us. And us kids seem to be the only ones who notice and our parents to call BS. Companies trying to make caricatures of the teenagers these days, saying that all we are self-involved and trend-obsessed and they hush us into submission when our message doesn't reach the ears of the nation, we are prepared to call BS. Politicians who sit in their gilded House and Senate seats funded by the NRA telling us nothing could have been done to prevent this, we call BS. They say tougher guns laws do not decrease gun violence. We call BS. They say a good guy with a gun stops a bad guy with a gun. We call BS. They say guns are just tools like knives and are as dangerous as cars. We call BS. They say no laws could have prevented the hundreds of senseless tragedies that have occurred. We call BS. That us kids don't know what we're talking about, that we're too young to understand how the government works. We call BS.
If you agree, register to vote. Contact your local congresspeople. Give them a piece of your mind.”  --Emma Gonzalez, 2018
