I feel like computer science has one of the the largest gaps between its teachers and its student of any field I've seen. Like undergrad physics majors are basically baby physicists, they do heavy derivations and like math and want to understand the world from first principles. Undergrad mathematicians are learning to care about rigor and build things up from first principles. Undergrad engineers have the same kind of pragmatic focus on efficiency that seasoned engineers do.

CS professors are either mathematicians or hacker/engineer types, and undergrad CS majors largely seem to be codemonkeys in training who are scared of math. Like it is so bizarre to me that we have people doing foundational work in logic and proof theory teaching classes to people who get scared when they see an inequality and want to cash out and write Javascript for 6 figures. What even is this field?

No photo today because I was just in the house all day and nothing too interesting happened. But today I worked on a bit for each subject.

Maths, I worked on my homework which was just second derivatives and therefore pretty easy, and a bit of mechanics but not much.

In CS, I spent an hour and a half trying to write a program to determine if a number is happy or not (basically means that, the digits of the number, when squared and added up, and repeated, eventually reach 1). I did not succeed. I looked up how to do it, I understand now, so I’m going to let it marinate in my head a bit then return to it.

Honestly, trying for so long to write that was really frustrating. I first tried converting the number to a string then using a for loop to iterate over the digits, convert them to integers again, then square and sum them, but I had issues when it came to getting that to repeat with the final number churned out and stopping the loop if it reached 1. Then I tried using recursion, which is fairly new to me. I’ve only used subroutines once before this so it was a bit daunting. I felt like I was getting somewhere with recursion but the math just wasn’t mathing and I kept getting Recursion Errors or Local Variable Errors. But it’s okay, I get it now.

For physics, I finished the foundations of physics booklet like I said yesterday! However, I got into the physics problem set and honestly it was bringing me close to tears. The problems are important because it’s an entrance exam for a club of sorts which would be an amazing supercurricular to show for myself when applying to uni, so this is the only opportunity I have to get in. The last 6 or so problems I can’t fathom the method for and they account for over 50% of the marks,,, hurrah you need just over 50% to get in. I’m going to ask my physics teachers on Monday because I refuse to let this chance slip from my grasp.

Regardless of those obstacles, I’m proud of myself for really giving both of them a good go. I’m going to give it another crack tomorrow and ask for help afterwards.

Saturn, Chiron, & Nodes in Your Chart: Unlocking Your Highest Potential

Welcome to Dharma If You Dare. I’m Christopher Lawley,  Planet Dharma team member and producer of the podcast. Today’s recording is a continuation of a talk introducing AstroDharma that Catherine Pawasarat Sensei and Doug Qapel Duncan gave during their online course entitled Crazy Wisdom. Part one of this talk can be found in season 3 in the podcast feed episode 11 entitled ‘Astrology and Buddhism: Introducing AstroDharma’. If you are not familiar with this approach to astrology, I recommend you hit pause now and go and listen to that earlier episode.  As someone who started as a skeptic and has come to truly value astrology, I have always been impressed by how committed Sensei and Qapel are to using AstroDharma as a tool for transformation. I’ve never seen them use it as an idle pastime or to explain away someone’s behavior. It is always used as a lever for getting underneath patterns and struggle to expose the opportunity for growth or the missing piece in someone’s mandala or view.  In today’s talk Sensei and Qapel explore parts of our natal charts that are particularly connected to spiritual and personal transformation including Chiron, Saturn and North and South Nodes.

They explain how these lenses can help us get unstuck, transform challenges into tools and take things in our lives less personally. This includes how to use astrology to integrate our shadow and realize our fullest potential.  You will hear them use the term ‘houses’ during the talk –  if you don’t know that part of astrology, don’t worry about it. Catherine Sensei:  So Qapel’s favorite and one of my favorites too. 

Qapel: Well, there are two favorites actually. The Nodes are one of my favorites, my other favorite is Chiron. Chiron is the wounded healer, so it’s where the wound is. So we’re back to the Shadow. So for me, the Chiron, the wounded healer, (where your wound is and how you heal it) and then the two Nodes (which we’re going to talk about now), are for me, key aspects to meeting the Shadow.  Along with the 12th house and Pluto (and the other planets, which I don’t think we’re going to get to either).

CS:  So just briefly about Chiron, because this I think is really helpful: Chiron’s an asteroid next to Saturn and he was a centaur. He was a great teacher: He taught Apollo and Artemis and Hercules and he was immortal and he taught many of the gods and the great Greek warriors and he was wounded in an accident. Just a pure accident: It was an arrow dipped in the blood of the Hydra. So it was like the worst poison there was and he accidentally got wounded with this arrow, but because he was immortal, he could not die. So he just had this terrible, terrible mortal wound for eternity. And so he tried everything he could to heal that wound, but it was basically unhealable. But through that process, he became a great healer.

Q:  And everybody is a Chiron. Being born into this world, you are wounded.  It doesn’t matter how good it was or how wonderful it was, you come into the world wounded. And part of your journey is to heal that wound back to the Shadow, back to dharma, back to astrology. 

CS: One of the neat things about Chiron is that it is really nobody’s fault. There are other things in our chart that are painful and we can usually trace them to something else or somebody else or to an experience. But Chiron not, it’s just a terrible pain that we just have and it’s through that experience that we have to heal ourselves and then we can offer that healing to other people.

Q: So this is huge when it comes to genealogy and planetary healing and transcendence:  Everybody’s been wounded and it is really nobody’s fault. Because whoever wounded you was wounded by somebody else and whoever wounded them wounded somebody before them. So, the nature of the wound and the struggle that you’re working with is that if you spend too much time in an ego way focusing on the person who did that to them, then in a sense you’re missing your liberation, even though yes, it might have been a wound, it might have been a hurt and it wasn’t good. Nevertheless, everybody in some fashion or other has been wounded.  So the ego wants to concentrate on where to assign the blame or where to assign the credit. In Astro dharma you’re moving past that, you’re saying, oh here are the patterns, here’s the structure, here’s how this family or tribe or culture or condition got built and this is how you transcend it.

The future of data science: Thoughts from Datapalooza 2023

What is data science?

Data science is a hot topic right now, but what does it mean and why should K-12 educators be paying attention to it? I went to Datapalooza 2023: The Future conference hosted by the UVA School of Data Science to learn more. 

As a K-12 computer science (CS) educator, I have considered data science to be part of CS, but it has also emerged as its own discipline. The UVA School of Data Science defines data science as the study of data and the methods used to learn from data. They also focus heavily on the interdisciplinary nature of the discipline that crosses boundaries between CS, math, and business with applications across other disciplines such as humanities, social and behavioral sciences, medicine, and architecture.

Several presenters described data science as having the potential to bring disciplines together for a purpose. What purpose is that? To gain insights, make predictions, and support data-based decision making in almost any field you can imagine.

There is a lot of attention on data science in large part because of the release of the latest round of generative AI models. In fact, ChatGPT had this to share when asked about the relationship between data science and AI - "data science and AI are interconnected disciplines where data science provides the foundational tools and techniques for working with data, and AI leverages these capabilities to build intelligent systems capable of learning and making decisions." 

The advancements in AI and data science are powerful and can have impacts, both positive and negative, on a massive scale. Mozilla has been considering the challenges of AI like how it exhibits bias, invades privacy, and reinforces existing power hierarchies and what trustworthy AI could look like, if it is designed to center privacy, transparency, and human well-being.

Why should K-12 educators be paying attention to data science?

I teach CS because I want students to become creators, and not just consumers of technology. The fascinating thing about the field of data science is that we are all participating in it as we generate vast amounts of data through social media use, fitness tracking, online learning tools, internet browsing, communication apps, gaming, device usage, content creation, location tracking and more. How much data are we generating? For a little perspective, in 2007 the digital universe was estimated to be a total of 281 billion gigabytes and the amount of digital information created had for the first time exceeded available capacity to permanently store it (Gantz et al., 2008). In 2023, it is estimated that 328.77 billion gigabytes of data are created every day (Statista). 

Because we are living in this the age of data, the message from Datapalooza is that data literacy needs to be as foundational as math and science in K-12 schools. In Virginia, K-12 educators can find data science standards as part of the K-12 computer science strand, Data and Analysis. In addition, Virginia adopted secondary mathematics data science standards in 2022. At the conference I also met a high school math teacher who is part of the pilot of a data science course along with 75 teachers across Virginia.

One thing I really appreciated about the conference is how passionately folks from the UVA School of Data Science talk about data science education. A few key takeaways that resonated with me:

Teaching calculus is not going to change much from year to year, but technologies are changing so fast that the focus of data science education needs to be on teaching students how to teach themselves. 

There can be a wide variability in student backgrounds related to data science, so it is important to create a healthy environment where students don’t feel like they need to compete with each other.

Leading with a project based on a real-world problem can provide the motivation students need to do what it takes to learn what they need to learn.

What is the future of data science?

I am hopeful for the future of data science education because it is so new. That has its own challenges for sure, but it also offers the opportunity to do things differently. There are persistent, pervasive, and problematic gender and racial gaps in CS education and technology fields (Cerf & Johnson, 2016; DuBow, W. & Gonzalez, 2020; Grover & Pea, 2013; Margolis et al., 2012). As the founder of Tech-Girls it often feels like we are applying bandages to a broken system. I’m excited that the vibe at Datapalooza was to acknowledge the challenges being faced and to lean into integration and the interdisciplinary nature of data science.
