Reminder for all you SoCal folks: I'll be interviewing powerhouse illustrator and Decemberists art-in-residence Carson Ellis this coming Saturday here in Ojai! More about it on my blog.
The venue is Bart's Books, regularly listed as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. It's an outdoor shop built around the former home of Richard Bartinsdale, an avid reader inspired by Parisian book carts on the banks of the Seine.

The event will be outdoors (heyoo, covid safety!) and free to the public. Come thru from 6-7pm!

WILDWOOD BOOK REVIEW (Spoilers)
So, I just read Wildwood (the book the next Laika movie is based on) and all I can say is, this book is a MASTERPIECE!
Characters and plot are really cool! Pacing is great!!! I cried at the end. Our Protag is a really interesting character! Prue is my girly, Curtis is my son!
On the Laika note...

They're giving them vibes

Take that as you will (Slightly sassy girly x shy nerd boy) (She does kiss him on the cheek at the end)
Seriously Laika is going to knock this out of the ball park! We already know they are great with these types of ships friendships.
The visuals they are gonna get to work with is gonna be great! THe writing team is going to have so much fun! The overall aesthetic of the book is gorgeous! The pictures throughout are flipping beautiful!
Anyways, cannot wait for the trailer to drop!

The Falcon, for @campaignskyjacks
I had an idea to make Project Falcon a luminary when we first got news of them being born, but it took me this long to finally make it!
The piece is done in my best recreation of Carson Ellis's style, since I adore her art to the ends of the earth :3

Wildwood Title Reveal
Laika Studios has announced that its sixth stop-motion feature film is titled Wildwood, based on the novel written by Colin Meloy and illustrated by Carson Ellis. The film is written by Chris Butler and directed by Travis Knight. The film stars the voice talents of Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Amandla Stenberg, Tantoo Cardinal, Jemaine Clement, Tom Waits, and Richard E. Grant.
Laika describes Wildwood as "a tale of love, loss, sacrifice and secrets, and of the magic you can find on your doorstep, if you’re willing to look for it." When Prue's baby brother is carried by crows into the Impassable Wilderness on the edge of Portland, Oregon, Prue and her classmate Curtis enter the wilderness to get him back.

"Wildwood", by Colin Meloy & Carson Ellis.
"Prue couldn't believe that no one had ever ventured this far into the Impassable Wilderness ; she found it a welcoming and serene place, full of life and beauty.", from Wildwood.
"My dear Prue, we are the inheritors of a wonderful world, a beautiful world, full of life and mystery, goodness and pain. But likewise are we children of an indifferent universe. We break out own hearts imposing our moral order on what is, by nature, a wide web of chaos. It is a hopeless task.", from Wildwood.

One Week in January: A look back at a Portland past
Happy signs on the Esplanade, Portland. 10 Aug 2024. Olympus XA2/Fujicolor 100 The year 2001, especially the days that preceded September 11th, can feel like a lifetime ago. It was a time when most of us had yet owned a cellphone and using the internet meant a home computer or “web cafe”, and we maybe spent an hour a day/every other day/a week doing so. That “instant connection” of today wasn’t…

I'm joining the inimitable Carson Ellis for a conversation at Bart's Books this month! Come help celebrate the release of her new book, One Week in January, on October 12th in the Bart's courtyard from 6-7pm. We'll be chatting about creative booms in funky towns, spending time with our younger selves, and finding community in rural spaces. Event details here. More bloggy stuff about it on my site here.
