Discharge Petition for H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964

This item, H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, faced strong opposition in the House Rules Committee. Howard Smith, Chairman of the committee, refused to schedule hearings for the bill. Emanuel Celler, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, attempted to use this discharge petition to move the bill out of committee without holding hearings. The petition failed to gain the required majority of Congress (218 signatures), but forced Chairman Smith to schedule hearings.

Thoughts:

Mina Murray unsurprisingly is the best and most interesting character. Deservedly, she is the leader of the team. She's smart, resourceful, brave, direct and industrious. I expected to learn more about her past. If memory serves, there are events not covered between the end of Dracula and how Mina started to work with agent Campion Bond. For example, why Mina and Jonathan got divorced?

The next best character has to be Captain Nemo. I rejoiced that he didn't trust Campion Bond and, therefore, decided to send Griffin to investigate.

I was shocked and delighted to see C. Auguste Dupin in this story and I wish he had a bigger role.

After, I guess we have Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Edward Hyde. They're fine.

Then, there's Griffin (the Invisible Man), he could have ranked higher as his wit makes me chuckle. Nonetheless, I can't forgive him for what he did at the girls' school.

Finally, Allan Quatermain. He wasn't that bad in comparison to other male characters on the book. What bothers me was his never ending complaints about Mina; and what was worst was that supposedly he's in love with her! Well, no. The truly worst bit is that she seems to like him too.

About the story, it was intertaining. I like adventure, action and mystery stories, so it was good. Also, I appreciated all the intertextuality: Arsène Lupin (Maurice Leblanc) and Dodger (Charles Dickens) were also around, although briefly.

In general terms, I liked it. However, I can't say I enjoyed all of it.

The thing I'm really fed up with is the Smurfette Principle (to include only ONE woman in an otherwise entirely male team). I can only dream to see another woman join the league.

What's more, the treatment of the female characters was often sexist, objectifying and in Marisa's case, racist (I likewise noticed racisim against Captain Nemo).

Concerning Allan and the Sundered Veil, it was long and dull for me. It took me more time to read this short story than the rest of the book. The only aspect that I could appreciate was the penny dreadful format (even though it gets repetitive for obvious reasons, such as the formulas).

What do you think of Frank Miller?

As a person, or as a writer? Frankly, I don't have a particularly flattering opinion either way, to be honest. I don't tend to stick writers up on pedestals just because they've written something I like, and I was never particularly enamored with the industry's hero worship of the guy in the first place. So:

As a writer: I think he's an incredibly mediocre writer who can't write a cohesive plot to save his life and whose greatest successes are largely due to his editors reigning him in and keeping him on a very tight leash (particularly Denny O'Neil, bless him). When left to his own devices he just...can't write. He just can't. Whenever he's given free reign, his writing is technically bad, thematically incoherent, and always out of character.

He also cannot write women; every single one of his works is horrifically misogynistic, even when his editors attempted to exert greater control over the project. Put simply, basically every single woman Miller's ever written falls into one of (or a combination of) three categories: a) sex objects, b) 'strong independent women' who become simpering girlfriends when Miller wants to glorify his Main Man, and c) women who exist largely to be victims and be brutally beaten and/or murdered. This comic sums it up nicely:

Anyway, I'm forever baffled by the comic industry's worship of the man as a writer. Daredevil and Batman: Year One are good in spite of him rather than because of him and literally nothing else he's ever written is better than mediocre (yes, The Dark Knight Returns is bad. I said it. That's my unpopular DC Comics hottake; I hate Miller's ultra-violent, gun-toting, hyper-masculine, libertarian power fantasy Batman and entirely blame him and DKR's lasting popularity for the constant "If Bruce just gave away his money/paid his taxes instead of beating up poor people, he could eliminate crime in Gotham" hottakes I have to deal with on twitter).

As a person: ....I have two points that lead into my personal opinion of Miller:

One, he's reportedly nice to fans and con-goers, other industry professionals have largely positive things to say about their work experiences with him, and as far as I'm aware there's never been a hint of sexual harassment allegations against him; in fact, he used his clout to get Charles Brownstein (former head of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund) to resign after the flood of sexual harrassment allegations against him. Based on his writing (which, again, doesn't exactly portray him as the kind of man who thinks particularly highly of women), I wouldn't have expected any of that to be the case. So, he's not a completely garbage human.

Two, he has pretty abhorrent personal politics that bleed into both his professional work and how he interacts with people in his daily life, and it shows. From his awful Islamaphobia and homophobia to his comments on the Occupy movement to his support for individualistic totalitarianism, basically all of Miller's personal and political values are predicated on 'othering' those in society who are fighting to be heard and treated fairly.

So like...."I'm glad he's nice and friendly to people, especially in an industry that doesn't necessarily hold creators to account for their interactions with fans and other industry professionals, but his personal and political values (many of which bleed heavily into his writing) create an atmosphere that is genuinely uncomfortable and at times unsafe for women and marginalized groups, which keeps me from having a very high opinion of him either as a person or as a creator."

...anyway, these two articles generally sum up how I feel about Frank Miller in general.

The Ladies ♔ Clanswomen → Jean Cameron of Glendessary (c. 1698 - 1772)

Jean Cameron of Glendessary was the daughter of Allan Cameron of Glendessary (who had previously been involved in the 1715 Jacobite rising) and his wife Christian Cameron (the daughter of Sir Ewen Cameron of Lochiel XVII Chief, who fought alongside the royalists during the English Civil War). The Camerons of Glendessary held land in Morvern and were a junior branch of the family of Lochiel, hereditary chiefs of Clan Cameron. Few details of Jean’s life can be established; she is said to have married an Irish army officer called O'Neill, but was either widowed or (in some accounts) due to his ‘brutal’ treatment divorced him, returned to Scotland, and was given back her maiden name. In 1744 Jean’s two brothers went abroad, appointing her factor of the family estates. As tacksmen, holding a lease from the clan chief, the family had an obligation to raise their sub-tenants for military service at the chief's request: when in August 1745 Donald Cameron of Lochiel XIX Chief committed to supporting Charles Edward Stuart, the Camerons of Glendessary were required to follow. Jean led the Camerons of Sunart to the Raising of the Clans at Glenfinnan on 19 August 1745. She also subsequently attended the Jacobite court in Edinburgh, but took little further part in the rebellion.

Aeneas MacDonald, who had been present at Glenfinnan, described her as a "widow, nearer fifty than forty, a genteel, well-looked handsome woman, with a pair of pretty eyes, and hair as black as jet. She is of a very sprightly genius and is very agreeable in conversation.” In a letter dated 22 July 1746, Jean states that she was arrested in February and put in Stirling Prison. She denies the stories that she went with the Pretender's son to England and confirms her loyalty to the Crown. After the failure of the rising in 1746, the Cameron tenants in Morvern suffered from punitive actions by government militias, although the Glendessary family seem to have retained most of their property. Jean herself returned to relative obscurity. She is said to have lived a quiet and devout existence at Blacklaw and to have been locally popular; though a Catholic herself she financially supported the local Presbyterian school. A late 18th-century account by a local antiquary remembered her as "retaining the striking remains of a graceful beauty" and as "rather melancholy", though an informed and intelligent conversationalist, noting that "politics was her favourite topic". Jean Cameron died in 1772 and was buried on the Blacklaw estate near her house, afterwards known as "Mount Cameron"; her grave can still be seen in a small park marked by a cairn, built in 1995 of stone brought from Morvern.

NOTES: Act one has three major blackouts: the scene between Arabian Nights and One Jump Ahead, the scene between One Jump Ahead and Proud of Your Boy, and the last 22 minutes of the act, which is all of Friend Like Me and Act One Finale. There is also a head that blocks center stage and the action is often lost behind it. Act two is much better with no blackouts and only some heads on the bottom that are worked around well. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. There’s a lot of chatter and rustling from the audience, but the sound is otherwise excellent. Includes playbill scans.

NOTES: Closing show! Or “rock concert” if you ask Christy Altomare. Yeah so this is a pretty obstructed video. Everyone was really excited so people were standing up, people were moving around, and honestly I had a little trouble paying attending to my viewfinder with all of the tears streaming down my face. Like Beetlejuice I would say it’s mostly like highlights, but all of the things that happen in the center part of the stage are captured really well and the video is DEFINITELY Christy centric. “Journey to the Past” is complete and gorgeous and you will cry. First act starts around when Anya meets Dmitry and the second act starts during “Crossing A Bridge.”
