How friendships are treated in Stranger Things VS How relationships are treated in Stranger Things (long-ish post)

One of the many Byler proofs is just how differently relationships are treated compared to friendships in the show. It's really that easy.

Let's take a few platonic duos in ST: Stobin, Dustin and Lucas, and Jonathan and Argyle.

Almost if not all the moments of them together as duos always have a comedic tone/vibe. They are either bickering about something, laughing or overall just having fun. Of course, It's not to say that friendships aren't taken seriously. All of these duos have emotional moments from time to time. The difference is, they are WAY less frequent and still DIFFERENT than with potential romantic/romantic duos.

Now, I am going to divide all canon ships into three sections:

Couples who are currently together: Mileven, Jancy, Lumax, Jopper, and Duzie.

Couples who are broken up: Stancy

Ships that are about to be canon: Rockie

All the romantic/intimate moments happen with couples in these situations. You can just tell they are going to be/were/are together. Byler is a very unique friendship because It's very clearly different from literally any other platonic duo in the show. Just imagine Steve and Robin talk like Mike and Will do in the bedroom scene in 4x4. It would be weird. Like, this is an undeniable fact whether you like it or not. Byler IS treated differently. It has been since the very start. So, we know Byler isn't a canon couple, we know they were never a couple, so that only leaves us with ships that are about to be canon.

"Byler seems romantic because Will is in love with Mike."

Just to get this argument out of the way, I'll remind you that in season 2 we were shown an example of an unrequited love. Dustin was falling in love with Max. But they never had any moments like Byler nor any couple. The reason Stancy seems intimate/romantic is because they literally were a couple.

No exactly. Sometimes unrequited crushes/love is added because it’s important for a character’s arc, or is needed for character development. Take Steve for example, while Nancy did reciprocate his feelings once (kind of), she didn’t anymore, and that taught Steve a lesson which he later admits, in this scene. (S4Ep8)

“Thank you for giving my head the biggest thump of its life 2 years ago. It changed my life.”

“I wonder if another girl before you had given me a proper thump, would things have been different?”

And in this position, it MAKES SENSE for Steve to have unrequited love. The writers didn’t write that to just ruin his life. It makes sense for his character, he needed Nancy not loving him to see his wrongs and become better. But it doesn’t make sense for Will’s character.

Will doesn’t need Mike to see his wrong doings, he’s not spoiled or a bad person like Steve once was. So yeah, that’s why i totally agree just the Duffers writing Will to fall in love with Mike is the biggest byler proof we have.

The most obvious Byler evidence to me is the fact that Will has a crush on Mike in the first place. Why did the writers choose to do that? How does this help the plot? What would the entire point of Will’s crush on Mike be if he doesn’t get to be with him? Sure, the duffers had to choose some way to make the audience realize Will is gay, but why Mike? He could’ve had a crush on Lucas, heck even Steve would’ve made sense. But no, it’s Mike. Mike, his best friend, Mike, the boy who’s been on his side since day one, Mike, who told Will that they’d go crazy together. Why would that love ever be unrequited? What was the point then? Just to show that queer people don’t get happy endings? Fuck that, dude.

Will is the type of cheeky mfer to gift Mike with a cute or sexy outfit that he himself will wear for Mike i.e. he is Mike’s present and Mike gets to have him in a new adorable Christmas outfit.

Sometimes I think maybe mileven if it's endgame...

Then I remember they have the worst on-screen kiss.

That they are the only couple that seems to need the words "I love you" to feel something... And that they have only been mentioned by Mike when there are other people...

They are totally the forced stereotype of heteronormality...

And yes, I definitely don't think they're endgame, but I wanted to summarize the most obvious reason why they'll stop being canon.

It’s that Byers family rizz. That kind of quirky, offbeat, maybe a little out there charm??? That underdog and low-key-kind-of-a-loser vibe??? The niche taste in music, thrifted clothes, shaggy haircut, and having to convince others that they’re not crazy energy??? Absolutely irresistible. It’s so funny that the Byers are canonically a weird and bullied, socially outcast family but that they all canonically have rizz 😭😭 Bc why is Jonathan pulling Nancy Wheeler??? Why does every girl who looks at Will want to kiss him??? Why is someone always talking Joyce on a date??? When you’re in a rizz competition and your opponent is the Byers family.
