I feel like a lot of people's response to Mouthwashing is a good example of how, despite being the "death of the author" website, a decent proportion of Tumblr's userbase doesn't seem to really get that the concept (somewhat critically) also implies that no one person can have the single "correct" read of a story?
It's wild reading so many different posts like "It's really telling how many of you don't appreciate [the most wildly specific and personal read of a story you've seen in your life] in this game, smh."
#Having a personal read of a story is cool and good - I mean. everyone does to an extent. Can't avoid biases no matter how hard you try.#But some people are really out here throwing around media illiteracy or prejudice accusations at anyone who doesn't agree with theirs?#It's a lawless land out there.#I mean there are aspects in stories that are so clearly implied or intended that they can basically be considered the only sensible read-#But I'm not talking about those ones in this case.#And Mouthwashing is such an interesting game because of how ambiguously it tells its story imo#It's really cool seeing what parts of the game stuck out to different people and how that influences their primary takeaway from it.#so it's sad seeing people get upset over differences in interpretation - particularly on the moral stance of the game.#especially when the justifications for theirs being the 'correct' one are so clearly personal and rooted in biased/cherrypicked reads.#Mouthwashing
