I'm currently???? cis? (I guess???) but I HAVE heard people say that this line alone from Flea made them realize that gender was bullshit, and they suddenly felt like they could experiment. Much like how people had their gay awakening thanks to Disney villains.

From what I can tell, almost all media rep starts out coming from villains, bc when you're still a decade or two before the public starts debating the issue seriously, that's all the execs will allow to make it to the production stage. It's just important to recognize that something that looks like "bad representation" to you in 2025 might have been a lifeline for queer kids in 1995, and might have been all the writers were allowed to get away with.
