While I can understand where OP is coming from (because God knows that I'm in the same kind of agnoy where Peter Parker is concerned and people who only know him from the MCU),
I believe that it is important to understand and respect that different people like different things, and that no one version of a character or a universe should be seen as superior to others.
I like to think of the show as a visualized "what if" canon divergent fanfiction. And while I can rant on and on about how many details and explanations in the show's canon are just not given, and how I would have liked more background info for Magnus especially (because his history must be so rich!), I can't say that I have any interest in the books.
I like that Alec is taller than Magnus
I love that Magnus is portrayed by Harry Shum Jr.
I am so, fucking, unbelievably, immesurably glad that they didn't do a secret relationship for Malec in the show. I HATE secret relationship plots.
I like that the characters are aged up.
I like that Alec has brown eyes instead of blue. Everyone always idolizes blue eyes so much, while brown is seen as so boring. I love how warm brown eyes are. How deep they seem.
I love Madzie.
I like that it has not been established that Alec will never become immortal. I can't stomach the thought of Magnus having to bury his husband. And any kids that they might have in the future. I can't think of him going through that. My headcanon is that Alec will become immortal, purely out of love for his husband, because he can't bear to be yet another person who will leave Magnus.
I like that there was no war. I like that the show didn't kill a kid character. I like that this gives me the opportunity to think up all kinds of headcanons for young Max being a prankster and how his relationship with his warlock brother in law developes as well.
I like that they didn't kill Raphael.
I like that the show stopped before they got to the rumored evil!Magnus arc.
I like that I am free to imagine what comes after for Magnus and Alec.
I like that I'm not tied to either canon, but am free to imagine everything and anything I want for them.
I like that ao3 has a feature that makes me exclude tags that I don't want to read about, like "book canon", or "secret relationship", or "blue-eyed Alec".
I like that people have book canon, and tv-show canon, and movie canon, and are free to pick and choose and create a narrative, a plot, a world that fits their own desire.
I like that, even the things I don't like, even the things that frustrate me, are there. To inspire and tease and challenge the fandom into greater and greater numbers of fandom content.
And lastely, I like that people are free to vent their frustration in a way which is safe, like this post. That gives them a place and a means to shout when they need to, and fuel discussion if they want to, and find like minded people who think the same as they do.
I hope every Malec fan has a wonderful fandom experience and a great rest of the week.
i truly hate the show bc YOU GUYS DONT KNOW WHAT YOURE MISSING WHEN YOU WATCH THE SHOW BEFORE READING THE BOOKS
you dont know that magnus’ magic is the same striking blue as alec’s eyes
you dont know alec’s eyes are the same color as the ancestors of a family so intertwined with his
you don’t know that magnus sees ghosts in the blue of alec’s eyes
you don’t know magnus is two inches taller than alec
you dont know that alec loves that magnus is taller than him
you don’t know that they dated in secret for months
you dont know alec’s wardrobe is absolutely hopeless and he only wears years old worn out sweaters with holes in the cuffs and magnus loves it
you dont know that sometimes magnus wears his worn out sweaters
you dont know that they didnt get married for years until alec became consul and they could get married in warlock blue and shadowhunter gold under his new law
you dont know they have two kids, before they ever married
you dont know their first son is named after alec’s brother max, who actually died during the war
you dont know that max’s skin is blue, and his eyes are just a shade darker than alec’s
you dont know that alec loved one man so much he changed the world for him

Random ask, who are your favorite romantic relationship's couples in any media, like anime/manga, tv series, books, etc (can be canon or non-canon)? Feel free if you want to write the reasons or not of why you love them....
Thanks for this ask sm!!!!!! I was so excited to answer it, I had to log in on my laptop to type this all out lmao I have very strong feelings about ships and shipping, and my favorite characters!! Sorry in advance this isn't a list, but more of an essay, I just can't make myself to choose only 10 ships!
Well, first, I love obsessive relationships, so one of my favorite ships is definitely Xie Lian/Hua Cheng (Heaven Official's Blessing)
and while we're on danmei, honorable mentions for Chu Wanning/Mo Ran (The Husky and His White Cat Shizun) and Mobei-jun/Shang Qinghua (the side couple in The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System).
I love Genshin Impact, and I have several ships that I love and that I think would and should be canon if China weren't viciously homophobic, but my favorites are Childe/Zhongli and Kaedehara Kazuha/Tomo (aka Kazuha's best friend). I also love Alhaitham/Kaveh.
When it comes to anime, I'm genuinely convinced jjk is partially a bl bcs of Gojo Satoru/Getou Suguru. Like best friends to lovers to enemies is THE BEST trope (I love suffering). And along those lines, another favorite is Dazai Osamu/Nakahara Chuuya, but I do also ship Dazai with Oda, I like the weird relationship they have, and I like the fact that them having romantic feelings for each other just makes their dynamic even more fucked up.
When it comes to kind of sweet ships, I love Din Djarin/Luke Skywalker, and I especially love to read all the single parent Din Djarin fics, they're so sweet!! Another one is probably Kozume Kenma/Kuroo Teturou. Fun fact: I never finished watching Haikyuu!!, I just love their vibes, and have a lot of feelings about best friends to lovers ships evidently lmao I'm also going to add Eddie Diaz/Evan Buckley here bcs they're a combo version of the other two ships containing my favorite things (single dads and bestiism to lovers). They're a new favorite ship, but I think they're here to stay
And lastly, my favorite ships from books. Starting with Jude/Cardan (The Folk of The Air), I like it when men are pathetic and that's what really appeals to me in this ship lmao And then there are the classic ships if you were on booklr during 2012-2015, which are Ronan Lynch/Adam Parrish (The Raven Cycle), and Magnus Bane/Alec Lightwood (Shadowhunters). Let me just be very clear, I've never watched the tv show, so my love is only for the book series ship.
Anyways, thanks so much for this ask, I've had lots of fun thinking about it and answering it <3

Tagged by @dodger-chan. Thanks! This was fun! If anyone wants to do it, I'm tagging you
1. How many fics do you have on AO3?
42
2. What is your AO3 word count?
205,076
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Stranger Things, All For the Game, the Raven Cycle, the Shadowhunter Chronicles, Black Sails, Buffy, and whatever my current obsession is at any given time.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Promises (AFTG)
A Yes Isn’t Always a Yes (AFTG)
You Me Her (Stranger Things)
No Assholes in the Car (Stranger Things)
Chance Encounters (Raven Cycle & AFTG crossover)
5. Do you respond to comments?
Usually, yes. If I think too much time has passed, then I get embarrassed and don’t.
6. What if the fic you wrote that has the angstiest ending?
spinning (for you) is quite angsty and is about the slow demise of a relationship between Steve/Eddie.
I Know That I Love You, But I’m Still Learning (To Love Myself) is dark throughout and tells the story of the night Ronan ended up in the hospital. TW: suicide attempt
B’s New Vamp is definitely the fic where I’ve gotten the most comments saying the ending killed them, though I think the ending is quite happy (if not for Faith, the POV character).
7. What is the fic you wrote that has the happiest ending?
This question has made me realize I don’t really write happy fics. Maybe In Another Life or You Me Her?
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not usually. One person told me a fic of mine was “the stupidest most far fetched thing ever” even though I tagged for the plot point they didn’t like. They did say I have great writing though, so I’m choosing to take it as a compliment.
9. Do you write smut?
Not that I’ve ever posted. I would write it if it was important for the characters/scene/plot to show the scene in detail.
10. Do you write crossovers?
I’ve written one! It’s an AFTG and Raven Cycle crossover where Ronan and Nicky meet. You can read it here.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes, one of my AFTG fics, Promises, had been translated to Russian. I have no clue where to find it, but the translator was nice enough to report back the comments on the Russian version.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No. But I had to co-write an essay for class one time and nearly killed my co-writer/friend, so I don’t see that in my future.
14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
That’s a very hard question to answer. But some of my long-time favorites are Andrew Minyard/Neil Josten, Sydney Sage/Adrian Ivashkov, Buffy Summers/Spike, and Magnus Bane/Alec Lightwood. A niche one that had a chokehold on me is Karma/Amy from Faking It.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I have three incomplete WIPs posted, so hopefully one of those. I’ve also been working on a Malec time travel fic for about 8 years at this point because I’m stuck on one particular scene, so it would be nice to get past that one of these days.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think my short fics are my best work. Usually they cook in my head for a few days, then come out all at once at four in the morning with tight writing and cohesive themes.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Long fics are definitely a weakness of mine. Also dialogue and fight scenes.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in the fic?
I am guilty of doing this, but find it annoying when it’s long blocks of dialogue with no context clues to decipher what’s happening.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
The first fics I published were Buffy fanfics on Dark Solace Elysian Fields. I’m almost certain I scribbled fanfic in my high school notebooks, but I don’t remember what fandoms they were for.
20. Favorite fics you’ve published?
It’s like picking my favorite child. But I do love some of my children better than others.
I’m most proud of my ability to imitate a character’s voice in B’s New Vamp (which also features possible the worst fic summary I’ve ever written).
A Yes Isn’t Always a Yes is the fic I’m probably most proud of overall, especially because of the sensitive subject matter and the lovely comments that some people who related to it left.

Even Magnus’s own brain wasn’t his anymore. Because if it was—then it would believe the words that Magnus had been repeating for days.
how down bad you are to have your brain turn against you in hating mantra
Well, he would show Alec Lightwood how he didn’t need his care anymore.
maybe this all in alec master plan, he could take care of magnus from a distance and evoke spike, which is like one of the most powerful reasons for doing anything
The tune came out all scratchy and broken.

the next part my doctor also said it hurting me but i let you know im hearing cornelia street piano version while re-reading this again and it hurt like finding out you forgot to plug the rice cooker and its dinner time
“I’m Lieutenant Commander from Navy SEAL. This is about national security. We need to stop a flight from leaving.” Alec lied through his teeth and heard Jace chuckle at it.
sorry to say i would report the shit out of this nobody is abusing power for love on my watch
Magnus could be done with his bullshit and refuse to take him back.
worry not magnus will leave you in the dust in hiadt you'll be more ancient than dinosaur
Simon grinned. “So what if we didn’t get the airport reunion. You can find him in London and profess your undying love while it’s raining. That’s a great reunion too.”
why would anyone risk catching a cold for romance ion understand dude ion understand dudeeeee
Tessa shook her head. “No, Alec. He’s not out for work. Magnus isn’t here. He never came to London.”
finding magnus- the sequel to finding nemo we all been looking for
He spent the next eight hours listening to the album till he reached New York.
going on two eight hours flights back to back...top 10 thing i can never do for a man im sorry yall
He felt suddenly choked up. “I—I really thought he’d be here. I really thought I was home.”
delusion always hurt when wee get ice water splashed to the face
“Long. Had a boring meeting with the execs for my next tour. I swear it could have easily been an email.” Magnus said dramatically.
i would actually sue if i have to write more than 3 emails a day
“You’d look so hot in a skirt Alec. If you really loved me, you would have done that for me.”
alec pls wear a mini skirt im begging you full two knees
“Twelve.”
damn this lists some megamind shit Shakespeare WHO??!??
“I’m not even one percent sure about anything. Just you. I can’t escape you, Alec Lightwood. And neither do I want to.”
the a in alec lightwood stand for addicted okay i'll stop
Alec smiled and grabbed Magnus’s face. “I could spend my entire life with just your memories. But memories have got nothing on you, Magnus Bane. I want the real thing in my life back.”
still remember cheering on alec accidental husband stealer era and now we're at this im so proud (he should steal husband more imo)
jajsjsjsj sequel to finding Nemo had me cracking so hard bro.
Also yes, that list was sone megamind shit—I am extremely proud of it lol. And yes, the A in Alec Lightwood stands for addiction and rightfully so.
Also I would never travel for a man either but it’s okay if a man suffers because of other men it’s to balance the scales jklljshhsll

Chapter 6 - And this is how it's supposed to be
It looked like normal blood.
But it hidden a power greater than they could’ve imagined.
“I thought Simon became a Daylighter as some side effect of the Soul Sword’s light.” Magnus frowned, still trying to comprehend what Alexander has just told him.
That was the official version after all. Something about how being in contact with Clary’s pure blood plus the Soul Sword’s energy affected Simon and he became a rare kind of vampire – something, thus, impossible to recreate.
“I thought too, until earlier today when Jace finally told me the truth. It’s actually something pretty simple, but that could turn both my parabatai and his girlfriend into a beacon for vampires.”
Magnus nodded in understanding. Not all vampires would be polite enough to say ‘please, could you give me a bit of your blood so I won’t be burned alive under the sun?’ They would actually suck Jace and Clary dry.
“Not even Clary knows about this. It’s a secret that Jace and Simon have been keeping only between themselves. At least for serious matters those two can actually shut up and keep a secret.” Alec murmured almost grumpily, then cleared his throat. “Anyway, now we both know, too.”
“Why? If Jace is doing this out of guilt just because I lost my magic in exchange of helping him, it’s unnecessary. I made my own choice.”
“It’s not about guilt, Magnus. I think it’s his own version of thank you for, you know, saving him from Lilith. If you haven’t done that, I’d have been forced to kill him. It would have destroyed me. Not only because he is my parabatai, but it would also be my brother’s blood on my hands. He knows that. And he’s grateful for you preventing that.”
Magnus shrugged helplessly as if to say it was nothing, but Alec weren’t having none of that. Taking Magnus’ hand and kissing his knuckles, he spoke softly, almost as if it were a secret.
“Jace might not show it, but he also cares about you a lot, Magnus. You’re family, and we do everything we can for family.”
Magnus’ Adam’s apple bobbed, and he turned his gaze again to the uncapped bottle of concentrated Angel blood.
What if it didn’t work? Though his heritage was of fire and shadow, Magnus was never one to hide in darkness. He liked the light too much, and thrived on it. Being a Child of the Night damped his joy, and he could live with that.
It was just that…
He really didn’t want to.
“Well, if nothing else, I’ll already have my fill for lunch,” he joked, though there was no lightness in his eyes.
His Alexander, never to ignore his distress, kissed his forehead. “Be brave, my love.”
And what else Magnus could do? Still a little hesitant, but more resolute than before, Magnus picked the bottle and took a small sip.
He didn’t know if it was going to work or not, but oh… It was delicious.
Almost addictive.
He drank everything almost in one go, feeling the most sated since waking up to this new life. And fortunately, it was enough to fill his stomach and quench his thirst, or else he might’ve not resisted taking a taste from Alec - whose blood always smelled delicious for him.
And Magnus definitely didn’t want to go there. Yet. Or maybe never.
A thought for another day, however.
“Do you feel any different?”
Magnus shook his head, but was already heading towards the door.
“Only one way to find out.”
Before he could launch himself into the sun, though, Alec grabbed his wrist. His eyes were wide in fear and panic.
“Can’t you just…” He waved his hand. “Put only an arm outside. Just in case it didn’t work.”
“Oh my darling…” Magnus lifted his hands and held Alec’s face in between them. “You have been so afraid all this time, haven’t you? Don’t you worry, okay? I won’t do that to myself. To us.”
Alec searched all over Magnus’ face for reassurance, and seemingly finding it, released a shaking breath. Nodding, he let Magnus’ go and stepped back, giving space to his boyfriend.
Smiling in gratitude, Magnus took only one deep breath - which he didn’t need anymore but the simple action helped to center himself - and then turned, marching forward to the afternoon sun without hesitation.
.
.
.
The world became brighter, lighter, warmer.
 ~*~
They were lazily making out on a sunbed at the back yard, Magnus refusing to go inside for hours already after finding out that he really became a Daylighter. Not that Alec minded. Seeing Magnus smiling and happier was enough for the Shadowhunter.
Only after they were beyond sated and just cuddling, the day giving way for a chilly night, that Alec dared to bring out the topic that was weighing heavily in his mind.
“Have you thought about Raphael’s request?”
For a moment Magnus tensed, but soon enough he relaxed again in Alec’s arms.
“I don’t know if I’m the best as Raphael’s replacement. I may know how their politics work, but I’m fairly new as a vampire myself. How can I expect to have their trust in leading them?”
“They know you. Maybe not as a vampire, but as a Downworlder like them. An immortal, too. I wouldn’t be surprised if you were older than most of the clan.”
“It’s still uncharted territory.” Magnus insisted.
“Magnus, you may have changed what you are, but not who you are. Your heart is still the same, and I’m pretty sure your brain is, too. You can still give advice. You have centuries of knowledge in magic and life overall. You created the portal and so many other things. You can still create new things, if not for the Warlock community, but for the vamps. I’m certain they would appreciate that and…”
Alec started to wave his hand aimlessly in the air like he sometimes did when immersing himself at some topic and laying out all the facts to prove his point. It was endearing, actually. It was somehow soothing to have such a small thing unchangeable even when their worlds kept colliding and in the brink of destruction and spinning all the time.
“... And, and we all know how you always liked to eat, from simple things to more ostentatious ones, so don’t tell me you won’t try to indulge yourself with something that may work with blood. Like, hiring some chefs and trying together thousands of recipes while combining different types of blood. You would become their favorite leader in no time! Maybe Maia would love new ideas for Taki’s, too.”
Magnus hummed, humoring his Shadowhunter. “Yeah, that sounds like me, alright.”
“Exactly! The New York clan wouldn’t know what-” Alec’s voice trailed off when a fire message came flying suddenly. He took it from the air and read the urgent message on it.
His expression closed off almost immediately, his eyes thunderous.
“What is it?” Magnus immediately sat up, worried.
“They found Camille. In a crime scene.”
None talked for a full minute. Alec started typing furiously on his phone while Magnus’ thoughts scrambled like dandelion seeds in the wind.
Only when they suddenly crashed and Magnus blinked out of his reverie, looking up and seeing Alec already looking back at him with worry in his eyes, that he felt coherent enough to form words.
“How…” He cleared his sudden dry throat. “How bad is it?”
“A carnifice. Over a dozen of dead mundanes. Three were children. There was a toddler.”
Silence.
The kind that could suffocate.
Then, Alec sighed. “Magnus, I don’t think imprisonment is enough for her now. She committed too many crimes. She has been killing mundanes left and right. She killed you and Simon. She will certainly get the death sentence, be it from the Clave or the Warlock Council, and I don’t want to–”
“I trust you.” Magnus interrupted him. “I- I don’t want to know anything about her anymore. If I could, I’d have my memories of her completely erased. So, I trust you to make the right call.”
Alec nodded slowly, though he was still very worried about Magnus.
“I have to go back to the Institute to assemble a team. Do you want me to call Cat or Raphael to keep you company?”
Magnus shook his head. “I want to be alone.” Crossing his arms over his chest, the vampire got up from the sunbed. “Go do your job, Shadowhunter. I’ll be here when you come back.”
Without waiting for a reply, Magnus practically fled back to Ragnor’s house, the back door closing with a bitter finality.
~*~
“Wow, I haven’t seen you this murderous since Valentine and Magnus swapped bodies,” Jace commented, very unnecessarily, causing Alec’s scowl to get more pronounced. “No, really. If you glare at the screen any harder, you’ll open a hole in it.”
“Jace, shut up!” Isabelle hissed, elbowing him hard.
As for Alec, he was trying really hard to keep his head cool, or else he would forgo every protocol he knew, laws be damned. Because his only wish currently was to make Camille Belcourt pay with blood, giving her a very slow death.
He wanted to kill her. He really wanted to kill her, deliberately and painfully.
“Alec.”
Alec blinked slowly, back to reality, then turned towards the voice that called him.
“Catarina.”
She wasn’t wearing scrubs like the usual. She wasn’t even with her glamor up. Her blue skin and bright white hair were exposed to all to see at the Ops Center, and for the first time it wasn’t a healer in front of them.
It was a warlock ready to confront the one who hurt her family beyond reality.
Jace gasped, perplexed.
“You called her? We can’t-” He cut himself, then shook his head. “Alec, since when do you put a civilian at risk during a mission? You know it’s against the rules!”
In any other situation, it would’ve been amusing having Jace mentioning laws and rules as if they were something he actually cared for.
But in that moment, Alec didn’t give a single shit.
“I really don’t care, Jace. Cat wanted to come with us, and I would never stop her.” He took his bow from the table and walked past them to give the final orders to all teams assembled and ready to go where Camille was hiding.
“Try to stop me, Shadowhunter.” Cat drawled, staring pointedly at Jace, and soon following Alec.
Jace and Izzy exchanged looks.
They were terrified for their brother.
Usually, Alec was the level-headed, always keeping an eye on them, but for the first time the opposite would be necessary.
They didn’t have at all a good feeling about that mission.
.
.
.
Camille was ready for them.
It was a trap full of demons.
A rift for a hell realm was open.
.
.
.
Alec fell on it.

Character ask meme
Magnus bane
Simon Lewis
Alec lightwoods
okay, let me just say this in advance: this is gonna be a mess. I read the books (TMI and TID), but it's been a while. I watched the movie, but only a few times and it's been a while. I watched the show, twice, but again, it's been a while. and I read way more fanfics than I'd care to admit, but they were written for the books, not the show or movie. add all these together, mix in my terrible memory, and you get me not having the slightest fucking idea what is canon and what isn't. so if you have only watched the show, some of this might not make sense.
Character Ask Meme
Tumblr media
What I love about them: his capacity for love. he's been alive for hunders of years, loved and lost too many people, and yet he still opens himself up to love. I just admire that so much. and also his fashion sense, though while the show did well enough, I prefer the disaster bi vibes from the book and the who-needs-pants-anyway dramatic-capes vibes from the movie.
What I hate about them: book!Magnus had some difficulties with communicating that thankfully didn't make it into the show
Favorite Moment/Quote: girl where do I start. literally everything he says is iconic. freewheeling bisexual. "We came to see Jace. Is he alright?/I don't know. Does he normally just lie on the floor like that without moving?" iconic. "You endure what is unbearable, and you bear it. That is all." walking in on not one but two Herondales making out with their girlfriends 150 years apart. "They say time heals all wounds, but that presumes the source of the grief is finite" "Black hair and blue eyes are my favorite combination." aka I am not okay. the entire scene between Alec and Magnus in Alicante in CoG about Magnus not calling Alec. HE CREATED THE PORTALS WITH HENRY!
What I would like to see more focus on: what I would have loved to see in the show was his cat eyes. idk if the contacts were a problem for Harry on the long run, or the creators never tried them, but I missed it. in this aspect, City of Bones movie my beloved ❤
Tumblr media
What I would like to see less focus on: nothing really comes to mind.
Favorite pairing with: Alec, obviously 😌
Favorite friendship: Tessa. and in the show, Rafael.
NOTP: Camille. in every version.
Favorite headcanon: there is just so much canon material about him and so many fanfics I read, my mind is blank.
Tumblr media
What I love about them: okay, here's the thing. I don't really like Simon. when I read the books, I pretty much hated him. when I started CoLS after a long waiting and the very first chapter was from his POV? I almost threw the book across the room. the movie version was okay bc of Robert Sheehan. the show version really grew on me though, but not enough that I could really choose anything I love about him. my feelings for him stop at "like".
What I hate about them: meh. just like my positive feelings stop at "like", the negative ones stop at "dislike" too. I don't really care about him enough to hate anything.
Favorite Moment/Quote: "Jesus!" Luke exclaimed. "Actually, it's just me," said Simon. "Although I've been told the resemblance is startling." this iconic exchange between legends: "I've got the Mark of Cain," said Simon. "That means nothing can kill me, right?" "You can kill yourself," Magnus said, somewhat unhelpfully. "As far as I know, inanimate objects can accidentally kill you. So if you were planning on teaching yourself the lambada on a greased platform over a pit full of knives, I wouldn't." "There goes my Saturday."
What I would like to see more focus on: I'm good with what we have.
What I would like to see less focus on: again, canon is okay.
Favorite pairing with: don't really have one. I've never been a fan of sizzy, though that's probably just jealousy and my dislike for book!Simon. I can't post this without mentioning the mangoes though 😌
Favorite friendship: Clary
NOTP: don't really have one.
Favorite headcanon: again, don't have one, sorry.
Tumblr media
please know that he's been my favourite since I first read about him in... 2012? so I will not be able to be normal about this.
What I love about them: so many things. my closeted baby gay ass related to him a lot. I love his loyalty. his intelligence. the way he loves people. his protectiveness. I love his insecurities bc I relate to him. I love his sarcasm.
What I hate about them: not really hate, and I can understand where he was coming from, but certain things in CoFA and CoLS weren't his best moments.
Favorite Moment/Quote: the whole "I did not make a pie" scene from CoHF. the gay spider in CoLS. "It's not like a stab wound you can protect me from. It's a million little paper cuts every day." which may or may not still make me tear up to this day. the entirety of the first kiss short story. the scene in Alicante in CoG I mentioned before. "He'd burn the whole world down till he could dig you out of the ashes. I know" mostly extinct is not extinct enough. fearless rune my beloved. the "take my strength" scene in CoA. "There’s a Hot Silent Brothers Calendar? Do they sell it?"
What I would like to see more focus on: Alexander Gideon Lightwood, Tired Gay™, rolling his eyes at the straight people he has to tolerate
What I would like to see less focus on: nothing comes to mind right now.
Favorite pairing with: Magnus, obvi 😌
Favorite friendship: Jace. and also Clary. I like their shared "he's an idiot but he's our idiot" feeling towards Jace. and since I kinda steered off towards only the books, Lydia in the show.
NOTP: Clary. still a mystery to me how that one exists.
Favorite headcanon: this is based entirely on this fanfic and its sequel from author "Spun" on ffnet (who btw writes great fanfics and I highly recommend), but I love the idea that the events of CoB and Magnus' party the gang attended wasn't the first time Alec and Magnus met.
so this ended up long. and messy. but it was fun, so thank you so much 💕

Brilliant
A Doctor Who–Destiel–Malec Oneshot
"This is brilliant!" the Doctor exclaims. She pushes some buttons on the console of the TARDIS. "Brilliant!"
"How is this 'brilliant'?" Alec asks. "We're trapped in a TV show."
"No, we are trapped in a TV series, Shadowhunter," Yaz hisses.
Castiel huffs in frustration. "It's probably just one of Gabriel's stupid jokes."
"Gabriel?" the Doctor asks. "Oh, the Archangel. Amy loved him, but not as much as she loved you, Cass."
"Where do you know his name from?" Dean demands to know.
The Doctor rolls her eyes. "I watched the show, Dean. Crappy ending, sorry."
"You... what!?" Dean asks.
"Nevermind. That's more brain-wracking than the usual time travel paradoxes. But I'm thrilled to meet you all. Umm—what are you doing, Magnus?" She raises an eyebrow at the warlock who lets his magic run over the console.
"This is worse than the technology in the Institute," he mutters.
Alec pulls him away cautiously. "Maybe you shouldn't mess with it then, love?" he suggests, smiling strained, holding tight on his husband's hand.
"Aww, you're the reboot version. I was so happy when Netflix saw sense. And your boys are the cutest," the Doctor chirps.
"Boys?" Magnus asks.
"Doctor, they might be from episode one of season four. Look at their clothes," Yaz whispers, but it's loud enough for Dean to hear it.
"There are only three seasons of Shadowhunters," he states. "It ends when they marry and Clary loses her memories, but gets them back in the last few seconds. It wasn't the best ending, but at least the gays were happy." Dean's grin reaches from ear to ear before it falters at Castiel's stern look.
"Dean, did you watch 3b without me?"
Dean shrugs. "If you wouldn't always run out on me or die then we coulda watched it. It was on my playlist for aeons. And I needed something to distract me from… You know." He waves his hand up and down the angel.
"Jesus! That's like that time when Sam and I were in this weird Hollywood dimension, with that Russian guy that looked like Cass!"
"Wait!" Magnus says. "I watched Doctor Who for six decades and Supernatural for fifteen years—I agree, Doctor, the 'finale' was crap. But if you all know us from a show called Shadowhunters, then we must be in some kind of dimension that morphs everything into a TV series that everyone else has watched."
The Doctor claps her hands together. "The French mistake—one of my favourites!"
"No, Russian." Dean shakes his head and rolls his eyes. He always loved the Doctor and was excited for a woman to take over the role, but he thinks he might have been able to live without her enthusiasm about their little get together. They have a world to save, after all.
"Chuck has a strange sense of humour, but that doesn't sound like one of his interventions," Alec states. "Why would he put us all in the TARDIS?"
"What do we all have in common?" Dean asks.
"We're kinda humans," Alec says.
"Time Lady."
"Angel."
"Warlock. And you're not fully human either, Alexander."
The shadowhunter chews his lips.
"But you three have some kind of mojo," Dean supplies.
The Doctor furrows her brow. "You're right. Cass has grace, Magnus magic, and timelord technology is so highly evolved, it could be seen as magical. If there is a—" she trails off and points her sonic screwdriver first at the warlock then at the angel. Then she listens to her ship. "You're right," she says and putters about the console.
"Care to fill us in?" Alec asks.
The Doctor pushes a button and a high-pitched sound makes them all cover their ears. "Gotcha!"
"What?" Castiel asks.
"I know what we have in common. We all have a fam. You've got the SPN family, and you," she turns to Alec and Magnus, "your fans call themselves shadowfam. And I?" She smiles brightly. "I have Yaz, Graham, and Ryan."
"You agreed on team TARDIS, Doctor," Magnus reminds her.
"Still, feels like fam to me." She shrugs. "So…" She quirks her lips in thought. "Some blood magic, maybe?"
"But family doesn't end in blood," Dean argues.
"Right, Bobby taught you that. Wish the showrunners remembered that in season 15," Alec murmurs. Dean gives him a strange side look.
"Is something wrong, Dean?"
"Nah, Cass," he says and pulls his gaze from the intertwined hands of the Lightwood-Banes. "So, maybe some rune thingy?"
Alec pulls a face. "Could turn Yaz and you into forsakens. Maybe even the Doctor. Better not."
"Can't you just put the coordinates in and throw us out in the bunker. Or in front of it? No idea if the warding would keep the TARDIS out or not." Dean frowns.
"Wouldn't work," Magnus says. "If this dimension, or whatever it is, thinks that we are all fictional, then the coordinates can't bring us into our worlds. We might end up in your dimension. I like our vampires better."
"Awesome!" Dean groans.
Magnus curls his fingers around his chin in deep thought. "I could summon a dimension demon, but they usually demand things one would rather die than do."
"Like what?" Castiel asks.
"The last time I had to pay one, he wanted me to drink seelie wine."
"Doesn't sound too bad," Dean says.
"You've never had seelie wine. That stuff is worse than the touch of a Djinn." Dean whistles in acknowledgement.
"Could still be worth it. I mean we need to get back to our friends, and yours are surely waiting, too," Yaz supplies.
"The TARDIS is stuck in this dimension, Doc?" Alec asks.
"Yes. Positive."
"Then we should begin," Magnus says, conjuring chalks. "We all will be home soon."
***
They stand in a circle around the pentagram drawn on the floor of the TARDIS.
"We must initiate a bond. Once this bond is sealed,..." Magnus starts.
"...it cannot be broken until the demon retreats," Castiel ends his sentence and smiles softly at Alec, who blushes fiercely.
"Well, this time, I won't be the one who'll break it in a gay panic," he huffs. Yaz snickers.
Dean furrows his brow, ignoring Castiel eyeing him. He recites the summoning spell together with Magnus and the Doctor. Green flames rise in their midst. They aren't hot, but their sight hurts the eyes. A deep growl speaks to them, and Castiel turns pale.
"I haven't heard this demonic dialect in a while," he calls over the noises. "Did he say what I think he said?"
Magnus worries his lip between his teeth. "I think he did."
"I can't."
"What, Cass. What does he ask for? Give it to him. It can't be that bad," Dean shouts.
"It isn't. At least not for me." Castiel looks at the Doctor. "Any Supernatural sequels you've seen by any chance?"
"No, sorry. I got stuck at the Destiel YouTube vids. Didn't get around to checking future releases. But you two always reminded me of Rose and me, you know?" She looks sad at the memory of her lost love.
"No. A human doppelgänger won't do," Castiel says firmly. He says something in the demon's tongue and gets a rumble in reply.
Magnus nods at him. "My magic can hold the circle. But hurry."
The others stare at them. "Why doesn't the TARDIS translate his words?" Yaz asks.
"This demon is too old," the Doctor says. "Even older than evil itself. No one speaks this language anymore but angels and demon-blooded ones, as it seems."
"Lucky me, huh?" Castiel presses out. He lets go of Magnus' hand and turns to Dean. The warlock holds the gap with his magic. "I know how you see yourself, Dean…"
"We don't have time for the whole death speech. Fast forward," Magnus hisses, clearly struggling to hold the bond.
Castiel frowns at him but nods. He turns his face back to Dean. "I'm sorry. I know you never wanted that to happen. It's simply what the demon demands. It doesn't have to mean anything, okay?"
"What are you talking about, man?"
Castiel smiles at him. "I love you." And then he leans in and kisses him. It's chaste but after a moment of shock, Dean returns the kiss, and his hand cards through Castiel's hair. Thunder booms around them and dense fog separates the different duos. The demon disappears with a screeching noise and when the fog thins out, the places where the two couples were standing are empty.
"It worked!" the Doctor rejoices. Yaz grins at her. "Let's get to the boys."
"No, Mulder, this isn't a UFO. It's surely just a high-quality film set," a redhead in pantsuit and coat says as she strolls into the room.
"Scully!" the Doctor cheers. "Brilliant!"

MALEC FIC REC POST, vol.3
vol. 1
vol.2
Media AU
Society Rules by @Tiger_Tiger_Burning_Bright [it is apparently based on films i’ve never heard of - The Philadelphia Story / High Society - which does not make it any less entertaining. malec are childhood friends, who had a falling out 5 years ago, and now Magnus is back from London to interrupt Lightwood wedding, aka the social event of the season]
Making my way to you by @asharee_arie [woah, what was that??? is the correct answer “a perfect fanfic”?? what a muthafuckin delight, where has this gem been hiding this whole time??? i was on the floor, rolling around and squealing like a newborn piglet. Intended as some kind of Office AU, this piece does not necessarily follow the outline, but who cares, when the story, and characters, and author’s style are all that perf??? i am in luv]
Mistletoe and Margaritas by @nevermetawolf [this is legendary, and i mean, muthafuckin epic - Office AU so authentic you’d feel it in yo old bones... author calls it a crack fic, although it was anything but!!! major must read for those, who’s ever loved office, allllllll the kudos]
Once Upon a Time in the Clouds by @Fatale (femme) [one of my all-time fav authors, every time i come by a piece i have not read yet, is like a huge YAY, what a talent. so this piece is an AU of something called “sky high”, which i have no idea about, but luved it nevertheless, Alec is born to a family of Supers, and is going to school for children with superpowers, but he himself is yet to manifest any.]
Quite Magical by @lorenzobane [Hogwarts AU, and what an adorable thing it was! granted, i’ve never actually read any of HP books, this was such a delight though... alec is bad at potions, and magnus has to tutor him *wink*]
Chef AU
the way to a chef’s heart by @lecrit [okay, the GIANT SMILE one’s face acquires when one finds out there is a new lecrit fic ≧◠‿◠≦ ≧◠‿◠≦ ≧◠‿◠≦ was reading it, and legitimately squealing like a feral piglet all the way through, cause i fucking luv every single word this woman writes, is like a tiny endorphin explosions in my brain. i know am a hopeless fangirl, but i’ll die on this hill. the way she gets malec, and every variation of them in her works just makes me go (❁´◡`❁) every. single. time.]
kids in the kitchen by @perpetual_journey [cuteness personified, malec are both chefs, and magnus is a single father of max and rafe, and go and read ittttttttt, its that soft content we all need in our lives sometimes]
Knives at the Ready by @harrysglasses [restaurant AU, that is supposed to be a malec rendition of Burnt (am guessing it’s a movie...?), and what a sweet treat it was! i liked author’s style, this is the kind of smooth, unproblematic content one would require to take repose from all the heart-clenching longing i’ve been reading lately... delightful piece to ease thy soul]
Single Parent AU
I Knew From the First Time by @KlaineJane [emmm, excuse you, dear author, who gave you the right to use Rafe and Max to get to my heart, and be generally so fucking cute??? Alec is a single dad of both rascals, that has a meeting with the High Warlock of Brooklyn, and Chairman meets new friends]
And Then I Met You by @everydayfandom [malec are single parents of max and rafe respectively, and alec gets called in to school about the accident max was involved in...who doesn’t luv them some gud ol’ sweet piece of kidfic? those are like a soothing baths for your soul, and lightwood-bane kids are incapable of being anything less than extremely adorable in any interpretation, so]
College AU
Don’t say goodnight by @alistoney [this the kinda lighthearted content i am always here for - College AU]
One year and a bottle of whiskey by @CryptidBane [yassssss, yet another version of the College AU, but with malec as both clueless and pining professors, this type of fic i can read endlessly]
All is Fair in Love and War by @LadyOxymoron [aaaaaaaa, what was this adorableness *major heart-eyes* what a piece, mashallah, college professors AU, where magnus is new in town, and malec is engaging in an elaborate prank war, which, undoubtedly, is nothing more than a prolonged foreplay (c), what a gem]
Canon Divergence
oh, i’ve waited for you by @manticoremoons [so, the fic is happening a little bit further in a timeline, than the books or the series, and Alec is around 30, and... married to Lydia. i know, i know, it almost stopped me from proceeding, and boi am i glad it hasn’t completely, cause it is a damn good piece!]
Hey There Demons, It’s Me (Your Dream Boyfriend) by @thealmostrhetoricalquestion [how many recs of this author can i make, without being deemed obsessed? cause y’all should go and read every single thing they wrote, stat. this adorableness is outta this world, literally - magnus’ summoning went sideways, and the loft ends up populated with the teenage ghost-demon, who is very clearly enamored with alexander... all kinds of fluff ensue]
Something Else verse by @CryptidBane (Impetus) [maybe it’s my fever talking, but i am such a sucker for memory loss AUs, and SH fandom has the richest canon base for those, yay! this time, it’s an AU verse after 3x10: rather than asking for his magic, Asmodeus curses magnus by taking away memories from everyone who’s ever loved him, in exchange for freeing jace from lilith’s thrall... oh, what a beautiful and delicious angst ensues]
Home by @otppurefuckingmagic [waaaaaaaaat... *sits with her mouth open* how did you....? how did he...? damnnnnnnnnn you authors in this fandom, stop being so talented!!!! this is uncannily brilliant]
I’ll hold on until you’re home by @alistoney [how dare you sir, right in the feels... the missing scene in the midst of 3x18/3x19, when magnus realizes what his idiot of a boyfriend has done, and confronts him about the Asmodeus deal]
First time for everything by @nebulein [“Nowhere in a Shadowhunters’ job description does it read ‘must look adorable while infatuated with the local High Warlock’.” - series of firsts written with such tenderness and adoration for characters, that it warms your heart while reading, - it shows how much the author cares for them. it is not finished, but whatever has already been written, is gold]
Fake dating AU
The Great Repression by @CryptidBane (Impetus) [although it might not be exactly my regular cup of tea, i still appreciate this author’s style so damn much, and the way they do malec dynamic overall, so it’s here. magnus is a camboy, and alec is hired to protect him from a stalker]
Friends to lovers
Family is Family by @hexicity [my brains are fried by the covid, so any coherent rec would be unlikely right about now, but the softness of this <333 alec sees an ad about a free room, and when he moves in, he finds way more, than he bargained for... gave me a bit of a “happy, shiny people everywhere” vibe, and that’s an automatic rec in my books, so]
Spinning Around In Circles by @lemonoclefox [my fav friends to lovers/mutual pining trope, here you are, and what a pretty pretty wrapper are you wearing - absolutely amazing interpretation of a trope, that seems to has been done to death, and yet here i am, never able to get enough of it <3]
If it walks like a duck by @thealmostrhetoricalquestion [this. i was reading this. and after every single word. all i wanted to do was get down on one knee and propose to this person. i dunno who the hell you is, but.... how did you do this? it was... another level of fanfiction.]
Neighbors AU
Meow 17:1 Love Thy Neighbor by @high-warlock-of-brooklyn [again, not a fan of drabbles, but who could resist such softness??? Neighbors AU, where Chairman takes some lessons he learnt from “Parent trap” to heart, and alec is a stumbling mess, but he gets shit done, kudossssssss]
Various AU mix
Solid courage by @thealmostrhetoricalquestion [how goddamn CUTE was dat???? answer - the cutest. mashallah people in this fandom can write]
Paper Love by @thealmostrhetoricalquestion [it would not be an exaggeration to admit i thoroughly fell in love with this author’s style, i mean, all and every version of their malec is all kinds of awesome. this one is no exception - catarina works in the library, and malec have to take madzie out to a coffee shop, cause their obnoxious flirting is too loud for the quaint environment of catarina’s workplace.... it’s tiny and so so sooooooo sweet]
make no bones by @ohfreckle [yaaaaaaaaay, what a cutie, tiny preciousness about magnus having an awful day and taking it out on a no-good useless building super, simply delightful]
Freud is a Dick by @sanctuary_for_all [Alec works in IT firm, and accidentally sends someone else’s dick pick to his boss, whom he has a crush on... do i need to say more]
shadows in moonlight by @kaeg [damnnnnnn, son, that was a ride!! something exquisitely soulful, tender and so, so poetic... young malec meet in summer vacation home, and it will take your breath away in the best way possible... warning, it is unfinished, but whatever was written, is absolute preciousness]
For the Love of the Game by @TicklemyPickle [Hockey AU, where malec were childhood friends, but had a falling out, and were not in touch for the last 7 years, until magnus gets traded in to alec’s team... i was somewhat unsure about reccing this, as some of the choices author made regarding their dynamic did not exactly resonate with me, but decided to go on, because, god as my witness, one thing this world definitely needs more of - is malec Hockey AUs, word upppp]
Love Is A Gamble by @la-muerta [i myself do not completely understand, why has it taken me so long to get to the “The importance of elsewhere” author’s most famous piece, but i finally have, it was amazeballs, like, the world-building...? off the charts. the language, the moral struggle, what a gem. alec is a grumpy and surely sheriff *duh!!!* of a tiny town, and magnus strolls in being all... well, magnus-y, and opens a gambling house, the potential!!! anyway, i highly doubt this piece needs recs, so imma zip it]
@ohprongs [this author has too many tiny pieces i like to name them individually, but as far as reccing goes, they should def be mentioned here for their effortless, seamless style, and clear love for the characters in all interpretations, that simply shines through all and any AUs they choose to put malec in]
special mention:
@theleftboobgrabber [i wasn’t aware that at this stage it was still possible to come by someone like this. the author, who’s style would impress me so. that unbelievably glorious Mafia AU, absolutely delightful and literally perfect My mama don’t like you series, and something that went straight to my top-5 - MI6 AU ohhhhh, that MI6 AU... i have no coherent words to express the depths of my appreciation, this is unbelievable fucking talent for writing malec]

A Dis-ass-ter
Rating: M
Pairings: Simon Lewis/Maia Roberts; Simon Lewis/Raphael Santiago; Simon Lewis/Meliorn; Maia Roberts/Raphael Santiago; Maia Roberts/Meliorn; Magnus Bane/Alec Lightwood
Summary:
Simon and Maia find out what the Mark of Cain is in an... Alternate way.
Namely, they can't get their spanking session on.
The squad is called in to help.
Read it on Ao3
It's nothing they haven't done a thousand times before.
Really, it's not even complicated. The safety precautions are all very basic, and Maia already knows the drill like the palm of her hand. No pun included.
What could possibly go wrong?
Apparently, this is what.
She tries to land another strike, this time, going extremely slow, making sure she is following the movement of her own hand with her eyes so she isn't missing anything. Just as it was supposed to, Maia's hand lands on Simon's ass the loud slap echoing in the room.
And then she feels the pain on her own ass.
What the fuck?
"Maia? What is going on?" Simon asks, turning his head towards her, which is really pointless, since he is blindfolded. "I hear slapping, but I can't feel anything."
"Well, I can feel it," she says, frustrated.
Simon frowns, which is a really funny look behind the blindfold, and Maia would probably be more endeared if she weren't so lost.
At least I'm a switch, Maia thinks for a second, because she tries to look at things on the bright side. Still, it feels weird to slap her own ass, especially when she has partners who could do that for her.
"Can you explain me what's going on?" Simon asks, sounding genuinely lost, before adding, "...please, Mistress?"
"I can't slap your ass," Maia answers, because that's really all she can say.
Simon sounds alarmed. "Shit, do you need to safeword? That's alright, baby, you should have just told me. I'll just need you to uncuff me and we can do something else, some aftercare, I know you like to watch movies-"
"No, Simon. I physically can't slap your ass!"
"...Do you want me to get it higher up?"
"No! Whenever I do, I feel it on me instead. See?" she says, slapping him again, "Can you even feel it?"
"...Are you sure it is my ass you're slapping?"
"Yes, Simon, I'm sure it is your ass. I did it really slowly to check."
"That's weird."
An awkward silence falls, because that sentence sums it up perfectly and there are no words left.
"Maybe there's a portal on your ass," Maia mumbles. "Did you open a portal in your ass?"
"No??? Why would I do that?? Or how? I can't use magic."
"I don't know, some elaborate prank?"
"Well, I'm missing out on a spanking, so no. Also, you know I suck at pranking, I'd have started laughing before we even took our clothes off."
"Shit, that's true. Then who opened a portal on your ass?"
"I feel like we shouldn't rush to the conclusion that there's a portal on my ass."
"Well, what else could it be?"
"I don't know? The possibilities are endless. I'm a newbie in the Shadow World, remember?" he says, wiggling his butt in an outraged way. "Maybe we should call a specialist."
"A specialist in ass portals?"
"Again, I feel like we are rushing to conclusions here."
"Magnus did invent the portal."
"Sure, call Magnus."
*
Magnus is about to begin very similar activities when Maia calls.
It's been a while since Alec last had a day off, and Magnus was really excited about the new handcuffs (they suppress his magic and his ability to cum. Unless! Alec! Lets him! Yes!), so he almost considers not picking up. But when people come for his help, it tends to be serious, and besides, this is Maia, so he can't make himself. He looks at Alec apologetically, but all Alec does is smile up at him as he passes him his phone. He makes an "I'll be done in a minute" gesture, but Alec doesn't look fooled.
Well then.
"Hello?" Magnus says, in his best I-am-totally-not-naked voice. Alec snorts, and Magnus almost throws something at him, but there aren't many objects available in his bed. "Maia?"
"Magnus!" she says, sounding distressed, and Magnus perks up, alarmed, "I can't spank Simon's ass!"
"Oh," he says, finally relaxing, seeing the way Alec, who had been going for his bow, mirrors his actions, looking curious. Magnus extends him a placating hand, signing to him that it's nothing major. He's glad this is just some teenage drama, not something overly complicated involving, say, magic and the Seelie Queen. Now that would be a problem. "That's alright, dear. I'm sure Simon will understand. Not everyone is into that. I, for example, am strictly into s-"
"No!" Maia screams, still distressed, and Magnus falls silent fast, "His ass is broken!"
Okay, that is definitely more worrying, but Magnus placates himself by thinking that, again, at least it's not related to some complicated magical plot Daylighter thing. "I'm afraid I need more information, dear. What exactly happened? Have you two done research before practic-"
"No! I mean, yes! Of course we've done research. But that's not the problem. I think there's a portal on his ass."
"Like, inside the-"
"No! Just the cheeks! Well, I mean, actually, I don't know. Simon, is the portal inside your ass?"
"There is no portal in my ass!"
"I think we'll have to check."
"Ok," Magnus says, and waiting room music starts playing over the line. Hm, Frank Sinatra, exquisite. He much prefers the original version of Garota De Ipanema, of course, but that is still not bad. He never expected it to be quite Maia's style, but then again, she is pretty eclectic, and-
"I can't fuck his ass!" Maia says, picking up the phone again.
"Ok," Magnus says, scratching his head a little, trying to think. "You said something about a portal. Does it lead anywhere that you can see, or-"
"No," Maia says, and for a second, Magnus has nightmarish visions of mundane television broadcasting the mysterious penis that showed up midair in the middle of Mumbai, but then she continues, "I just can't get in. It goes back. When I tried spanking him, it slapped my ass! Why is his ass leading to my ass?"
"That doesn't sound like a portal," Magnus says, calmly. "It might be some sort of blocking spell. Like a shield. They can't really differentiate between, uh, friendly and unfriendly intrusions." Then he pauses, "Although it is weird that the pain came back to you. Are you sure that you are not the one cursed?"
"Me?" Maia asks.
"Yes. I know a hex like that, every time you try to inflict pain, it is inflicted on you instead. Not that difficult to pull off, I should be able to undo it easily. We should move fast, though, because if the person plans on attacking you, it means you can't defend yourself," Magnus says, magicking some clothes on. Looks like the plans are officially cancelled. He can see Alec nodding, putting the handcuffs, blindfolds, vibrators, plugs, paddles, collars, wax, condoms, gags, and dildos they had selected for today all back in the box. "But we need to be sure. Where are you?"
"Uh, we are home, but- give me a minute, I think we need to test. I'll call you back?"
"Of course, my little pretzel."
He can hear her smile on the other end of the line. She sounds more calm when she says, "okay, bye."
"Looks like I'm on call," Magnus says, shaking his phone a little bit for emphasis. "By the way, Maia likes my nicknames."
*
Maia stares at her phone for a second, thinking of who they can ask for help with this. She never considered she could be the hexxed one. Fuck.
"What if it's Russell?" she thinks, a little scared. "Do you think he would do that?" It sounds pretty cowardly, making someone unable to fight you like that. It's not like she and Russell ever came to that before. Then again, she would totally kick his ass.
"I don't know. You know I don't love the guy, but it doesn't sound his style," Simon says. "Maybe we should test, like you said." He adds, trying to go for calming and cheerful and hitting unsure and slightly hysterical right on the head.
"Yes, you're right," she says, running her hands through her hair. "How do we do that?"
"Well, could you untie me first? It's weird that you're just, like, talking to my ass."
"Right, sorry."
*
They come to the conclusion that they should call someone else for Maia to slap and to slap Simon, so they can check which one of them is it about, or if it's about the both of them somehow. Meliorn is the obvious choice, since, well, they've done this before.
"Mel," she says, "I need you to come here and slap me and Simon."
"I do not wish to inflict harm on either of you," Meliorn answers, in the tone of someone who is looking up at a tree and trying to figure something out and is not interrupting that activity to talk, but is still paying attention to the conversation anyway. Meliorn has very precise entonations.
"No, I know, it's just a quick slap, just to test something. Please? Si- I- We might be in trouble."
Meliorn shows up in front of her. Maia turns off her phone, sighing, and feeling just a little safer with them there. She really hopes Russell isn't planning anything. At least with Meliorn she'd have someone to protect her.
"I resent that. I literally have superstrength, of course I'd protect you too," says Simon, who apparently can read minds now.
"Yeah, but I mean, still. Meliorn has magic, that's always more helpful."
"So my cool powers mean nothing to you, huh?"
"I fail to understand how slapping could help either of you," Meliorn interrupts, looking very calm and ethereal-like as they stand in front of Simon's Naruto poster.
"It's just for a test. Actually, I'd have to be the one to slap you, then you'd slap Simon," she says.
"That is only a minor difference," they reply, but nod. "Any preference for a place?"
Maia extends her hand, looking at her hesitantly. She just looks back at Maia, immobile. Maia bites her lip.
"You have my full permission," Meliorn says.
Maia slaps her shoulder. Not too light, since tapping Simon had no effect, but not too strong, either. She doesn't feel anything on her own shoulder. Or her ass.
"So?" Simon, who apparently can no longer read minds, asks.
"Nothing unusual," Maia says.
"Nor on my end," Meliorn replies. "Should I slap Simon now?"
"Yeah, sure."
Meliorn slaps Simon's shoulder, and then makes a little noise.
"I didn't feel anything." Simon says.
"So it is you who are hexxed," Maia says.
"Yeah, thank G-d," Simon replies. Then he adds, "what? At least it's not you,” when Maia looks at him weird.
"You are the sweetest, did you know that?" she asks.
"Careful, we're going to start being disgusting again."
"Okay, so this is definitely some kind of shielding spell," Maia agrees. "Should I call Magnus again?"
*
Magnus says that he doesn't know any spell quite like that, at least not any that allows it to be done without being initiated by the person spelled. He still shows up to check on Simon, though, which leads to seeing some unfortunate items they forgot to put back on their places and also the diagnosis that whatever it is, it is Seelie magic, not a warlock's.
"Seelie magic? Could it have anything to do with the weird ritual the Seelie Queen performed on me?"
“No, I’m sure it’s something else,” Magnus says, dryly, “The Seelie Queen performed an unknown ritual on you and you didn’t even consider it might have something to do with that before??”
“Well, I mean, nothing in particular happened at the time.”
“And you thought maybe the ritual was just for the shits??”
“Well, no, but Maia was staring at my forehead for a really long time trying to figure it out, and then I said, ‘I mean, even if you figure it out, what are you going to do, kiss my booboo away?’ and then she kissed my forehead, so we started being all cute and stuff, and I forgot.”
“Why am I only now hearing about this?” Meliorn says, sounding distressed, because obviously they had nothing to do with the ritual or anything about that particular plotline, since that would be ridiculous. “And why didn’t you come to me before?”
“Simple: I am a himbo,” Simon says.
“Simon,” Magnus sighs, pressing his fingers to his temples, and thinking that maybe he should send Alec a text to let him know that his totally super quick visit to Simon’s place, babe, I promise, seriously there’s no need to raincheck do NOT put it all back in the drawer I’ll be right back will actually not be that quick and maybe they will have to raincheck. Maybe. "Can you explain to us what exactly happened?"
So Simon describes the whole thing about how the Seelie queen branded his forehead with the help of some totally not-Meliorn seelie (again, why would Meliorn do that? That would be ridiculous and OOC) and all that pizzazz, finishing the whole narrative off with a "crazy, right?"
Magnus and Meliorn look at each other, and Maia is totally expecting that they will say, "of course! We know exactly what this is and it is very easy to solve and Simon's ass will be fuckable again in no time," but instead they say, "we will need to do research. I've never heard of anything like this before."
As Magnus' portal closes, they can hear him say, "Alexander, I'm afraid we'll need to raincheck," to which Alec deadpans, "no, really?". Meliorn leaves a kiss on both of their foreheads and says that she will get to the bottom of this before disappearing with her own portal.
So it's just Maia, Simon, the messy bed, and the ropes and blindfold they need to put back under his bed again. And there is nothing they can do but wait.
*
Simon is like, spectacularly drunk.
That is not too hard to happen, of course, because he is a known lightweight and Maia's bloody Marys (ha! That's right, they have blood) are strong. Still, after a week with no relevant news from either Magnus or Meliorn, it looks like Simon was even more helpless to the effects of alcohol. Either that, or he really needed an excuse to scream,
"THE SEELIE QUEEN HAS CURSED MY ASS!"
At the top of his lungs in the middle of Hunter's Moon.
The rest of the clients ignore him, because they have heard all about it before. Raphael, who is beside him, nurses his own bloody Mary with a way too amused smile. He looks absolutely fond, which is a weird way to react to Simon mumbling, "what does she even have against my ass?", but that's Raphael for you. At least Maia doesn't have to worry about Raphael having a weird time at their triple date. Then again, she's sure he already knows how weird they are at this point.
"Has he been whining like this ever since?" Raphael asks, doing a shit job of hiding his laugh as he takes a sip.
"Yup," she replies, checking a cup against the light to make sure it's dried. "Tried everything to make him look on the bright side, didn't work. Guess all we can do is wait for Simon and Meliorn."
"We can trust them," Raphael says, sounding absolutely serious. "They will figure it out."
She smiles at him. "Yeah, of course they will," she answers, ruffling his hair a bit, because she can't help it. Raphael lets her, because he also can't help it. "We'll just have to deal with him up until then."
"Labour division," Raphael nods. Maia laughs.
Simon continues with his rant. "I am completely unfuckable. No butt business at all, nada!" He says. "We tried everything. I have THREE whole partners, and NONE of them can fuck me!!"
"Well, I have never fucked you," Raphael points out, unfazed.
"Yes," Simon says. He then turns towards the camera to look directly into your eyes as he continues, "That is true. Raphael and I don't fuck, and we never will, because he is asexual and sex-repulsed and is not interested in that, with me or anybody else. He won't fuck any of his other partners either, and that is wonderful and valid and should be respected by the fandom." After that, Simon turns back to Raphael and says, "but that is not the point! It's not about you, it's about my ass!!"
"Of course, my apologies," Raphael deadpans.
"Simon, come on. We'll figure this out. We just need to… Talk to the seelie queen," Maia says, her voice faltering at the last words. "I mean, what she's gonna do? Kidnap us again? That's gotta have gotten old by now."
"You shouldn't test her like that," Raphael says, voice serious and eyes hard. Maia can see the way his fists clench as he says it, and she can't help but smile as she takes his hand and places a small kiss there.
"We'll be fine, I promise," she says.
"You'll let me know if you need help, right?" Raphael asks, instead of taking Maia's empty promise.
At that moment, Simon's phone rings.
*
"It's something called the curse of Cain," is the first thing Simon says after he hangs up his phone.
"The Daylighter curse??" Raphael asks.
"Yes- wait, you knew about this? And didn't tell me?"
"I knew what the curse of Cain is, I didn't know that's what was. All you told me is that your ass was 'sealed shut', there was nothing about that in the spellbooks."
"So Cain is withholding information," Simon mumbles.
"Maybe that just wasn't his priority," Maia suggests.
"Maybe he never tested," Raphael adds.
"Maybe he just left me to perish," Simon counters.
Raphael rolls his eyes. "Come on. Let's get you home. You need to be sober when we go talk to the Seelie Queen."
*
A whole commission was sent on a diplomatic mission to get Simon's ass back, including Maia, Raphael, Magnus, Alec, Meliorn herself, and even Cain, whom had not been seen by anyone in millions of years but Simon was able to track down in the New York sewers that very same week. How convenient!
Meliorn designed their strategy for talking to the Queen, and her and Magnus led the negotiations. Raphael also spoke in the name of all of the vampires, saying Simon's interests were theirs as well, which Simon thought was totally sweet.
Magnus and Meliorn's speech was very in sync, a result of long rehearsal, and everything went down smoothly. Cain offered to let the Seelie Queen observe him in Simon's place, so she wouldn't miss out on her shiny, unique toy. They all kneeled before her as Meliorn finished her speech, saying, "we beg of you, my queen, let the Daylighter make his own choice."
The Seelie Queen then said, "k lmao," and undid the spell.
*
It isn't until Simon is back in the safety of the regular realm that he throws his arms up and says, "my ass is back!", promptly leading to a montage of celebratory cheers and hugs among the commission.
"We should celebrate!" Maia suggests, "Finally, Simon will stop crying about this."
"I agree," Meliorn replies, smiling slyly at the both of them. "We should celebrate."
"Alright, I'm out," Raphael says, because he is a sex-repulsed ace and not interested in that type of celebration. "Have fun," he adds, because he is happy for his partners.
And have fun they do. Once Magnus and Cain leave as well, of course, because otherwise that would be weird.

Ghosts of the Shadow Market Commentary pt. 7
The Land I Lost:
- This is the only story I already read (I got the audiobook narrated by the gorgeous Melissa Fumero)so I already know a little. Can’t wait to revisit it tho
- Alec Lightwood Is fulled by love for Magnus and spite. You gotta respect a petty gay
- Max with his sailor outfit! I just want to hug him and never let go
- “All the demins” cutie!
- The Lightwood-banes Will be the death of me
- Elyaas, the comic relief demon is my favorite character (am I joking? You’ll never know)
- Wait? What’s up with thomas? What happened with him?
- They are so domestic! Kill me
- I still hate that Jace and clary are the heads of the institute, but whatever
- Elliott’s speech about immortality is really beautiful
- As much as I love Lily, I do think her obsession with Raphael is weird. I get her attraction was unrequited but it gets creepy at times
- Oops. I forgot Jace was still there. If only he’d take the hint
- Lily and I share the same disdain for Jace and that’s very sexy of us
- My biggest stupidest pet peeve in this series is how the international Shadowhunter names don’t follow the pattern of the English ones. Like, it’s established that Shadowhunter names are pretty much two words conjoined together, like Lightwood or Fairchild. Meanwhile, we have Rosales, Mendoza, Romero, etc! those are just regular surnames! Idk! It just really bothers me!
- Alec Lightwood being a feminist icon. That’s it. That’s the tweet
- We have to stan a guy who uses his privileges to do what’s right for minorities
- * Starts quoting Shakespeare uncontrollably *
- Alec remembering events from trsom sends me to oblivion
- Ugh! Horace Dearborn
- Alec and Lily’s brotp makes me weak! I love their dynamic
- Shadowhunters and their superiority complex
- I like that it wasn’t a cute little meeting between Alec and Rafael. It wasn’t an instant connection like Max. I enjoy that they grew to like one another
- I wish there wasn’t so much emphasis on the whole lineage thing. I get why it’s done but it still perpetuates the idea of bloodlines being way too important in comparison to found families
- Who’s the clown who’s gonna cry with Lily’s backstory again? This bish right here
- Does that mean Lily shows up in TLH? Now I’m really excited for chog
- That Alec/Raphael parallel tho
- I don’t remember. Does Irina Cartwright die in the future? If not, she should. What a fucking bitch
- I love Jem, but I hate the way jem talks. All the “deep stuff” he says are so cringy!
- Clary x Alec x Tacos are my ot3
- I love babies! I really do! But having babies doesn’t complete you! You don’t have to have a child to feel whole!
- Peanut butter and jem sandwiches are the best indeed! Lily cracks me up
- I FINALLY CONNECTED THE DOTS! I’m an idiot
- Side note: Auraline is a beautiful name
- Alec drinks gallons of respect women juice and that’s very sexy of him. We stan a feminist
- Perhaps boludo could be our always (I’m dumb)
- The Juliet and Joaquin side romance is cute, not gonna lie
- Characters with Poor face recognition is the representation we needed
- Unapologetically gay Alec is the best version of Alec
- I imagine that tapestry looking like the one Phil has of Hercules in the Disney movie.
- Robert Lightwood made me emotional guys, what do I do?
- Malec never loses and never will, bitches! Mark my words! We never lose!

Mr. Right...ish Chapter Six
Magnus and Alec have officially begun their long distance relationship. This is a little bit into the future where they have already been dating each other for about three months. For those of you who have been following this fic, this is a little different from the previous parts because it’s just Alec’s POV. For those of you who are new, welcome to me desperately trying to get Alec to not act like a dumb bitch. The masterlist is right here if you want to see the other parts. Reblogs and feedback is extremely encouraging to please keep ‘em coming. Also there is only a few chapters of this fic left and then I’ll jump into the fuck ton of malec oneshots I have planned. Just ask @thatwinchestergirl67 or @quickbright they’ll tell you. I’m gonna stop ranting and let y’all actually get to the fic.
Warning: swearing, angst, homophobia, shitty parents because it’s their book versions
Most people say that long distance relationships never last. Clearly, those people have never met Magnus. The two of them had been together for roughly three months now and Alec had never felt happier. Despite the distance, the two of them had found a way to make this work. Being with Magnus had given Alec the strength to do things he never thought were possible. And so here he was, doing something he never thought he’d be able to do.
Ever since Alec had figured out that he was gay, he had never really had the courage to talk to his parents about it. The Lightwoods were a very respected family and he always believed that something like this would hurt the reputation his parents had built for themselves. However, Magnus had taught him that he never had to be ashamed of this or anything else. That if his parents loved him like he believed they did, they would understand. So here he was, at the Lightwood mansion to finally tell his parents about the man he was falling in love with. Composing himself with a few deep breaths, Alec knocked on the door.
“Alexander!” Maryse exclaimed as she hugged her son. “You could come over more often, you know.”
Alec chuckled. “Mom, you of all people should understand that being a pilot doesn’t leave a lot of free time in your hands.”
Maryse led Alec through the hallway to the dining room. Robert has already been sitting there for quite some time. Alec has never had the easiest relationship with his dad. He knew Robert would likely not be able to accept what Alexander was about to tell him, but he needed to say it. For himself and for Magnus. As the three of them sat around the dining table, nobody spoke. I really miss Izzy right now. It wasn’t until they had all eaten dessert that Alec found the words to say what he had planned.
“Mom, dad….I have to tell you something. You may know this already. I….I’m gay. I know that might be difficult to understand right now but you needed to know that. I’ve met this guy, Magnus, and he makes me really really happy. He’s the only reason I even had the courage to do this in the first place.” Maryse’s expression indicated that she had known this for a long time now. Robert was a lot harder to read. After several moments of intense silence, he finally looked at his son.
“Alec, it’s either your flying license or this lifestyle you’ve chosen for yourself. As long as you wish to fly planes and call yourself a Lightwood I cannot let you live this life.” Robert’s voice was calm, too calm. Almost cold. If Maryse was at all surprised by that decision, she certainly didn’t show it. Alec let out a soft chuckle and slowly slid his hand in his pocket and pulled out a thin black wallet. He pulled out a small rectangular piece of plastic and placed it in front of his father.
“Here. Here’s my license. Take it. I don’t want this. I want Magnus. I need Magnus. Hell, I love Magnus.” God, it felt good to finally be able to say that out loud.
“Alexander, listen to your father!”
“Don’t call me Alexander.” Alec hissed in response. Only Magnus gets to call me that. He stormed out of the Lightwood mansion in rage, but mostly to avoid crying in front of his parents. He knew he should feel upset, angry, frustrated but all he could think of was Magnus. I love him. I love Magnus.

I remember.
read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/Nwz9WZh by HeadInTheCloudsHeartInHell As it happens so often, when fans aren't satisfied with the ending of a TV show, they take it upon themselves to write an alternative ending, just to gaslight themselves into feeling better - and often, they share it somewhere online with others. I am no different. So, enjoy! In other words: This story is my version of the ending of the last episode of the TV show Shadowhunters. (I know I am a little late to the party, but hey, better late than never!) Words: 2306, Chapters: 2/2, Language: English Fandoms: Shadowhunters (TV) Rating: Not Rated Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Categories: F/M Characters: Clary Fray, Jace Wayland, Simon Lewis, Isabelle Lightwood, Alec Lightwood, Magnus Bane, Maia Roberts Relationships: Clary Fray/Jace Wayland, Simon Lewis/Isabelle Lightwood, Magnus Bane/Alec Lightwood Additional Tags: like a lot of people i hated the ending of the show, so of course i had to write an alternative ending myself, this is basically just the epilogue of the last episode, also i haven't read the books, the fic is entirely tv show based, if you can't find a fic you like, you have to write it yourself, jace misses clary so much, he can't get over her even after a year, he's still so in love with her, he keeps looking after her, and then a miracle happens, because clary remembers, and they kiss, and then they live happily ever after, because i want them to, and because I can, because i am the author of this fic muhahahaha read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/Nwz9WZh

Project 2 - Discovery Phase
Tumblr media
the cover of my original pocket book copy
1. City of Bones - Cassandra Clare
2. Largely the cover designs consist of fit, faceless, young adults with tattoos, photoshopped to have a darker/edgy/grungy feel. Designs are usually dominated by one colour. The tenth-anniversary edition features beautiful and simple gold linework on a dark blue background.
3. Aside from the 10th anniversary edition the covers are missing illustrative and minimalist designs. The designs are also largely focused on photographic imagery and texture.
4. Fantasy, murder, young adult, runes, vampires, faeries, tattoos, secrets, darkness, battle, protect, mystery, romance
5. Main characters: (from wikipedia)
Clarissa Adele "Clary" Fray/Fairchild/Morgenstern She is a little over 5 feet tall (5'2-5'5), thin, has bright red hair, green eyes, freckles, and described as looking nearly identical to her mother. Clary grew up oblivious to the Shadow World and her real heritage. Jocelyn, her mother, believed that Clary should have a normal human life to shield her from Jocelyn's past. She raised Clary in New York. Clary is an artist, like her mother, often drawing her emotions in pictures - her version of a diary. She lives a very typical teenage life until her mother is kidnapped. Throughout the next book or 2, Clary embarks on a quest to help her mother while adjusting to life as a Shadowhunter. She and Jace eventually develop a mutual attraction; although the revelation that they are siblings dashes their romantic hopes.
Jonathan Christopher "Jace" Wayland/Morgenstern At the age of 10, Jace was orphaned because his father was murdered by members of the Circle. He was then sent to the New York Institute to live with the Lightwoods and Hodge Starkweather. There, he trained alongside Isabelle and Alec Lightwood. Jace grew up to be cold and arrogant to those around him. He rejected the idea of love and only believes in the art of war. Before the death of his father, Jace was brutally trained to be an expert in the arts of war. He was said to be the best Shadowhunter of his age. Jace is described as having golden hair, eyes, and skin. He is attracted to Clary but becomes horrified after discovering that they might be siblings.
Simon Lewis Clary's human best friend and essentially only friend for about 10 years. Simon only has three main interests; his band, keeping up with everything nerdy, and Clary. He is secretly in love with Clary, though she does not appear to reciprocate those feelings and is oblivious to them until he directly tells her. He is jealous that Clary shows a larger amount of affection for Jace than himself. His loyalty to Clary is unwavering even after discovering the relationship the Clary and Jace begin to grow, Simon stays by Clary. He is described as a tall slender 16-year-old boy with black shaggy hair and brown eyes.
Isabelle Sophia "Izzy" Lightwood She is described as tall and incredibly beautiful, with black hair and eyes. She is daughter to Robert and Maryse Lightwood and sister to Max and Alexander Lightwood. Isabelle's priorities are simple: family, The Clave, and herself. She is determined to be strong and fight whomever in order to obtain what she wants. She is ruthless when it comes to protecting her family. On the surface she may seem like she is self-absorbed; however, throughout the novel, she grows into a much more complex character.
Alexander Gideon "Alec" Lightwood Alec is the eldest son of the Lightwoods; therefore, he carries much of the responsibility of the siblings. Having just become an adult, Alec was expected to take care of his siblings and look over the Institute while his parents are away. Throughout the book, he is constantly struggling with what is right by his family and friends and what is right by the law. Alec's self-esteem was very low at the beginning of the novel, which makes him lash out at Clary and other characters. He has black hair and blue eyes. Alec is a closeted homosexual, but comes out to Clary and Isabelle, and claims to be in love with Jace. He is jealous of Clary over Jace's affection for her.
Luke Garroway/Lucian Graymark Once a Shadowhunter and a former member of the Circle, a group started by Valentine Morgenstern, he is Jocelyn's best friend and seems to be in love with her, though he has yet to declare it. Because of his close relationship with Jocelyn, Clary considers him a father figure. Luke became a werewolf when Valentine betrayed him. He has since become a pack leader twice (in Paris and in New York).
Valentine Morgenstern A powerful, evil Shadowhunter, he reappears after years in hiding, during which he was presumed dead. He attempts to steal the Mortal Cup from his former wife, Jocelyn. He tells Jace and Clary that they are both his and Jocelyn's children.
Magnus Bane The High Warlock of Brooklyn, who has a romantic interest in Alec Lightwood. When his name is found imprinted inside Clary's mind, Clary and her allies seek him out to uncover his connection to her past and her mother. He saved Alec from death when the latter was injured by a Greater Demon.
Hodge Starkweather Isabelle, Alec, and Jace's eccentric tutor, who, in the end, comes out to be a follower of Valentine.
Jocelyn Fray/Fairchild Clary's mother and a former Shadowhunter seeking isolation from the Shadow World as a means of protecting Clary from Valentine, her estranged husband. An artist, Jocelyn is described as elegant and beautiful, with long red hair darker than Clary's. She hid the Mortal Cup (one of the three Mortal Instruments) so that no one else could claim it or disclose its location, leaving subtle clues that only her daughter, Clary, would be able to decipher. When she found two-year-old Clary playing with faeries, Jocelyn sought Magnus Bane's help and every two years he cast a spell on Clary's mind that shielded her from seeing the Shadowhunter world. She was abducted by Valentine in hopes of discovering where she hid the Mortal Cup, Jocelyn is eventually found by Clary in a potion-induced coma, and is taken to the hospital.

A Bit of Space (6/6)
The end.
You can read this chapter on ao3 here or listen to a podfic version here. Special thanks to @accal1a for creating the podfic and @the-prophet-lemonade for beta reading this chapter.
Chapter Six:
It turned out swimming was a wonderful idea because by the time they made it back to the ship, hours had gone by and Alec declared that it was time to test the solar panels.
It was a big moment, one that could change everything but Magnus found himself hesitating. If the solar panels were working and generating enough power, they might be able to contact someone on the radio tonight. If that failed, they could listen to music. And if they didn’t have enough power for even that, at least they could use the lights inside the ship. Magnus would be thrilled by anything, at this point.
But coming back from swimming, the feeling of Alec’s lips still lingering on his own, it felt like whiplash to see Alec revert to his role as Captain Lightwood as he began talking rapidly about solar panels, electricity and hope. If the solar panels didn’t work, nothing would change and yet, if they did, everything could.
Magnus felt tired. Swimming had drained him and instead of feeling excitement at the possibility of radio communication, Magnus felt numb. He would be disappointed if this didn’t work but he hadn’t gotten his hopes up and if he was stranded here forever with Alec- well, that didn’t seem so bad.
On Earth, maybe Alec wouldn’t like him anymore. Maybe everything would be different there and whatever made them click here would be gone. Maybe they’d been through too much together to ever make a life somewhere normal. There was a part of Magnus that wondered if they only made sense here, halfway across the universe and stranded on some unknown planet. Here, they were each other’s only option.
On Earth, Alec might not want Magnus anymore. He told Magnus he was in the closet and he might be too embarrassed to leave it or perhaps he’d ask Magnus to move out of the loft he loved so much. They might bicker, fight and disagree on everything. They might have nothing in common when the threat of survival wasn’t looming over their heads.
What if Alec didn’t like cats? What if he didn’t get along with Ragnor and Catarina? What if he didn’t understand Raphael’s dry charm? What if Alec didn’t want kids? What if he did? Magnus wasn’t even sure if he wanted kids or not.
Things were so simple here. He and Alec, they fit together because they had nothing left. Every part of their old selves was scattered and smashed apart by the crash but now, they might have to assemble all the little pieces back together. It left Magnus with one, burning question: if they were rescued, would they even like each other anymore?
When Alec flicked the switch on the main console and their ship lit up instantly, Magnus was excited. When the automatic door began whirring for the first time in months and they didn’t have to pull the crank to open it, Magnus was ecstatic. When he charged up his camera and took a wonderful series of photos of Alec and Apollo, Magnus was thrilled. How could he not be?
When Alec turned on the radio and his face lit up as he told Magnus that they had a signal, Magnus was happy. He was happy that they might wake up tomorrow to news that they were being rescued, that someone was on their way. Of course, he wanted to go home but when he laid in bed that night, his head pillowed on Alec’s chest, gazing at Alec’s arm and leg that dangled off the edge of the couch, Magnus wondered, if none of this had ever happened to them, would Alec have even looked at him twice?
They waited beside the console the next morning, eating inside rather than outside like they normally did. Magnus knew it might take a while to hear back, even if their radio was working, but Alec didn’t want to risk leaving it unattended. It would be just their luck they’d leave for a few minutes and the radio would go off.
Instead, they sat together, eating in silence. Apollo had disappeared for the day and Alec seemed like he was in just as much of a reflective mood as Magnus was.
Magnus wondered what Alec was thinking about. The silence hung unbroken above their heads, minutes piling up, before Alec finally spoke. “What are you going to do?” he asked softly. “If we can go back home, I mean.”
Magnus frowned. He’d thought about it a little, but mostly in terms of Alec. He wondered if Alec would want to come stay with him in New York for a while, after being reunited with his family, or if he would quickly grow sick of Magnus’ company. He wondered if Alec would be polite enough to say no to his face, or if they would part ways at the landing site and not see each other again, resigned to weeks of missed calls and email promises that would eventually lead to nothing.
“Well, I certainly will not be going into space again any time soon,” Magnus muttered, choosing that instead of voicing any of his fears out loud.
Alec smiled, laughing softly. “Yeah, me neither.”
They lapsed into silence again. It felt stiff and awkward, a thick sort of silence that weighed down on Magnus’ shoulders, no matter how many times it looked like Alec was about to say something, or how many times Magnus tried and failed to start a conversation.
Magnus wondered what that was about, but he couldn’t bring himself to ask.
Nothing came from the radio the next day.
Magnus was disappointed, but not as disappointed as he thought he’d be. There was part of him that felt a little relieved, but as soon as he acknowledged that feeling in his head, he was swamped by a wave of guilt. It was selfish. Magnus was sure Alec wanted to go home. He knew Alec missed his family and Magnus did too. Magnus missed his friends dearly. He knew Ragnor would be in a foul mood, thinking he’d died and he owed it to Catarina to go save her from it. He wanted to go home.
But he also wasn’t too upset to learn they didn't have the choice to go home, the same way they didn't have it last week. They didn’t have to talk about how things would change. They didn’t have to jump into the uncertainty of the future. All they had to do was stay here because that was the only option available to them.
Magnus wasn’t sure if Alec was disappointed when nothing came from the radio. If he was, he didn’t show it and he definitely didn’t want to talk about it.
Magnus was sprawled alone on the couch, drifting in and out of sleep, aware of the cold absence of a body next to him. He rolled over onto his stomach, pressing his face into the hard excuse for a pillow. It was just then that he became aware of someone speaking, someone who was distinctly not Alec. He was grateful that Alec was missing from his side because he jolted up so suddenly that he only narrowly avoided falling off the couch, catching himself with an outstretched hand.
Alec was already awake. He sat on the sofa across from Magnus, looking as pale as a ghost as he stared over at the radio console. The radio console that was crackling with the sound of someone calling their names, over and over again.
Magnus couldn’t even comprehend what he was hearing. He was glad it seemed like Alec was listening, because he definitely was not. His thoughts were scrambled. All he could think was that someone had heard them.
Someone had heard them and they were responding.
“-please respond with your status.” The message restarted after a few moments of silence. “Crew 108, we have received your-”
Alec jumped to his feet. He rushed over to the radio and hit the button to respond before Magnus could even move.
“This is Crew 108,” Alec barked into the receiver. “Our condition is stable. We have enough food for approximately fifty days. We found a water source. This is Alexander Lightwood speaking, and next to me is Magnus Bane. We are the only survivors of the crash.”
Alec let the button go. The message they had received began replaying again, but neither Alec nor Magnus moved to turn it off. They just listened in shock, letting the words repeat over and over again.
“They heard us,” Alec whispered finally.
Magnus put his hand on Alec’s arm and squeezed it. “They’re going to come get us,” he heard himself say. Half of him was still somewhere deep in his own head, trying to figure out what exactly that meant.
“It’s going to take a while. They never do anything quick.” Alec responded.
Fifty days. They had fifty days left of food, fifty days for mission control to launch a rescue mission. Fifty days left here with Alec.
“My sister is going to kill me,” Alec said as he laughed soft and relieved.
Ragnor, Magnus thought with a jolt. He was going to see Ragnor again. He was going to see Catarina again. He was going to see Raphael. He was going to see his home again. He was going to see New York again. Part of Magnus still didn’t think it could possibly be true.
“They better still have my cat,” he said finally. Magnus was going to kill Ragnor if he’d gotten rid of his cat.
The response came quicker than Magnus had expected.
Mission control was putting together a rescue mission to come get them as soon as possible. They hadn’t announced when they’d be launching yet but the goal was to get them before their food ran out, which was good for them both. Magnus cringed as he imagined trying to eat the sticky translucent leaves outside.
After that mission control had a million questions about the planet they were on and how exactly they had survived. Magnus told them about Apollo and was thrilled by the excitement he received from the other end of the line. It was exceptionally fulfilling, considering that Alec’s first reaction to discovering they weren’t alone on the surface of the planet was trying to kick Apollo out.
Knowing they’d be rescued and his data would be useful, Magnus set out to document as much as he could before they were picked up. He took photos of everything, from the plants outside to where they’d been sleeping, to Apollo and even a couple selfies, with Alec rolling his eyes in the background.
Magnus looked through his notes, knowing now that people would actually be seeing them. He ripped out the page where he’d written to Ragnor. All of this would be heavily documented the second they were picked up. Magnus wouldn’t doubt if it was scrutinized in classrooms and research facilities across the globe. The last thing he needed was for Ragnor and the rest of the world to know exactly how teary eyed he’d gotten at the thought of never seeing him again. Ragnor would never let it go.
Ragnor would also never let it go if he saw exactly how emotional Magnus had gotten when they’d been forwarded messages from their families but thankfully, Ragnor was completely unaware of that one. If Ragnor asked later, Magnus would insist he was completely unshaken by Ragnor’s snarky message about how Magnus owed him money for the funeral he’d arranged. Magnus was pretty sure his funeral was paid for by the government but he’d hash that out with Ragnor when he actually saw him.
They also learned that there had been a monument built for their ship and all the crew that had been lost with it. Ragnor explained that it would have been a pain to scrape Alec and Magnus’ names off it, so apparently the plaque was being amended to show they hadn’t actually died.
Magnus asked Alec if he wanted to see the monument with him, when they returned to Earth. Instantly, Alec said no. He thought it would be weird to see a bronze version of himself, but both he and Magnus knew they would probably be forced to visit it in the endless press conferences they’d have to attend. Magnus could hear the book offers now.
Though Magnus’ question had been a joking one, they hadn’t really talked about what going home meant for either of them or what it meant for them together. Magnus thought that perhaps, they’d both been pointedly ignoring the conversation they very clearly needed to have.
“So-” Magnus started without prompting. “You’re not out,” He finished. He’d wanted to be a bit more tactful with how he brought it up but Alec didn’t seem offended by Magnus’ abrupt question.
Instead, he took a deep breath. “No but I think-” Alec hesitated for a moment and that alone made Magnus nervous. “I think I want to be.” He said at last. “Everyone thought I was dead. If there was any better time to do it and have my parents' sympathy, it would be now.”
Magnus nodded. That made sense. If he had any grand secret to reveal, it would be a good time to do it but that wasn’t exactly the question Magnus had wanted to ask or have an answer to. “And what does that mean for us?” He asked, only meeting Alec’s eyes when he forced himself to. He didn’t want to look like a coward or like he was as nervous as he really was.
“Well,” Alec began, a soft flush coming over his cheeks. “I think it would be nice to, uh, continue this, if that’s… if that’s what you want to do as well.”
It took a moment for Alec’s words to sink in but Magnus found himself smiling as they did. “I would like that,” he said. “We’ve gotten rather close-” Alec laughed softly. Close seemed like a great simplification for what they’d gone through together. “-but there's still a lot I’d like to learn about you.” Magnus admitted, his words coming in a little bit of a rush now. “Like which side of the bed you sleep on. If you leave dishes in the sink or if you clean them right away. What your favorite restaurant is. If you can cook.”
A slow smile stretched across Alec’s face as Magnus spoke. “It almost sounds like you want to know what I’d be like to live with,” he said.
Magnus blinked. That wasn’t what he’d been trying to imply, but that was exactly what he’d described. “Well,” Magnus tried to force down any embarrassment he felt bubbling up. “-after everything settles down, maybe we can test it out and go on a vacation somewhere. I’m planning on using all of my time off after this.”
Alec looked up at him. He searched Magnus’ face, like he was trying to see if Magnus was serious. It was the same exact thing he’d done when he’d kissed Magnus so many nights ago, like some part of him was still expecting Magnus to change his mind about him. At last, he nodded. “I’d like that a lot. It’d be nice to pick our destination this time.” Alec looked away for a moment, almost as if he was imagining it, and then he admitted softly, “I was worried once we got home you wouldn’t want anything to do with me.”
Magnus’ own doubts flashed through his head. He’d been so worried that Alec would abandon him the moment they stepped foot on Earth again, or maybe pull him aside on the ship ride home and explain to him quietly and surely that they weren’t going to work, not beyond the surface of their new planet. Now, that all seemed so silly.
Magnus found himself suppressing a smile, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t bite it back. “Of course not,” he said. “I’ll have as much to do with you as you’ll let me. I plan to make you sick of me by the end of this.”
Magnus was teasing but Alec’s response was entirely serious. He didn’t laugh and when he spoke, there was nothing joking in his tone. “I don’t think I could ever get sick of you.”
Magnus leaned into Alec’s side, letting his head fall onto Alec’s shoulder as they lapsed into silence. He felt a gentle wave of relief wash through him as their conversation sunk in. For the first time in months - for the first time since the crash - he could see the future before him. His and Alec’s future. He couldn’t wait to take Alec out to eat. He couldn’t wait to eat something real. He couldn't wait to take a shower, preferably with Alec by his side.
“Do you think Apollo will miss us?” Magnus asked after a moment.
“Yes,” Alec replied, much to Magnus’ surprise. “But I think he’s growing up too and he’ll move on quickly. He latched onto you when he was a baby, but he’s getting bigger. He’s gone more independant. He’s even changing color.”
It was true. Apollo was turning blue now, much like the fully-grown creature they’d seen out on the water, the first day they ventured to the lake. Small talons were starting to sprout. Apollo came back to the ship less and less and, some nights, stayed out until the morning. The first night Apollo didn’t return had been the night after they regained power, and Magnus wondered if Apollo didn’t like the hum of electricity and the bright lights of the ship’s console, but maybe that was just an excuse Magnus used to make himself feel better.
The truth was probably a lot more simple: Apollo was moving on, just like Alec and Magnus would soon. Magnus had planned to say goodbye to Apollo before they left - he wanted to cuddle his companion to his chest and pet his head and hope that Apollo understood just a little how much Magnus had grown to care for him - but Apollo hadn’t returned to the ship in days now, and a part of Magnus knew he wasn’t coming back.
It was almost like Apollo knew they were about to leave, but Magnus still wished he’d been able to say goodbye.
The ship that came to get them was smaller than their own, but after spending so long cramped together in a single room, it seemed huge. Still, Alec and Magnus spent their first night onboard not unlike they had most nights in the weeks before. They laid curled together in their room, murmuring to each other and exchanging soft, quiet touches as they talked about what would happen now.
Though, some things had changed. For the first time in months, they had an actual bed they could share. It was small and technically, only made for one person, but it was still far bigger than anything they had shared before. They had pillows and blankets now and they even had a window that looked out into the void of space, along with a TV on the wall and anything they could possibly want to access on the ship's extensive database.
Compared to before, they were living in luxury. Even the food - condensed and vacuum sealed as it was - tasted like heaven after so long of eating flavourless protein bars.
Alec had tentatively informed everyone that he and Magnus were together now. He had clearly expected some reprimand from mission control but it never came. Magnus supposed it wouldn’t look good on them, especially after they had abandoned Alec and Magnus on an alien planet and left them to die. Besides, Magnus wasn’t sure if they were technically employed anymore, or if the rules even applied to them now that they were rescuees.
Magnus wondered if he’d have to reopen his bank accounts on Earth, since he and Alec had been declared dead. He wondered what Ragnor had decided to do with the loft, if he’d sold all of Magnus worldly possessions the moment Magnus was declared killed in action. They had talked, of course. Magnus had called Ragnor the moment he could, but he hadn’t asked about his money or his stuff. He’d even forgotten to ask about his cat. The sound of Ragnor’s voice on the other end of the satellite link had left Magnus watery eyed and anything else he wanted to say was easily forgotten. It didn’t matter. There would be time to talk about the little things later and Magnus would have the chance to be furious at whatever Ragnor had decided to do in his absence.
Alec had talked to his family too. Magnus had given him some space - even though space was something they now had plenty of - and left him alone to dial his two brothers and his sister. Magnus wanted to give him room to breathe, but there was also a part of him that was curious about what Alec was saying.
Magnus had already told Ragnor about Alec and secretly, Magnus wanted to know what Alec would say about him in return, but he didn’t want to eavesdrop. Instead, he decided to explore the ship, wandering the maze of empty gray hallways and stopping to gaze through the porthole windows out into the darkness beyond. He hadn’t taken the time to look before. When he and Alec had first been brought aboard, their first thoughts had been food and sleep. Their second thoughts had been each other and their families.
Magnus hadn’t even considered checking out the ship. As he walked around, the thought brought a small, knowing smile to his face. One would think that after so long together, he and Alec would want more moments like this, away from each other, but alone for the first time in a long time, Magnus felt the urge to wait and ask Alec to come with him. It was odd, seeing other people who weren’t Alec and it was odd walking around without Alec right there at his side, ready to jump in front of him should he get attacked by a vicious blue-skinned alien.
Eventually, Magnus found himself sitting alone in an empty corridor. There were no benches, so Magnus sank to the ground. If anyone found him, he’d have a hard time explaining why he was on the floor, but Magnus couldn’t find it within himself to care.
Maybe, he just needed a moment to sit on the ground and reflect; a moment away from the warm press of Alec’s shoulder against his, or from the dizzying array of stars beyond the window and from all that they had left behind on that strange planet. He had a lot to reflect on, now that he thought about it. They were famous on Earth, or so Magnus had heard. Everyone back home knew they were alive by now, that they had survived on an Earth-like planet for months without proper food, water, or radio contact.
Ragnor had explained that they had been on the news almost everyday this week, which Magnus found a little incomprehensible. His entire life story was broadcast on the TV: his early life, his journey into the space academy, his previous missions, all the same segments repeating over and over again, and now, his experience with Alec too - what once had been something shared between just the two of them, stranded on a lone planet halfway across the galaxy with no-one but each other for company, was now common knowledge among everyone back on Earth. Magnus wasn’t sure how he felt about that, but either way, he imagined his life was going to be very different when he got back home, in more ways than one. He thought of TV interviews and press conferences and then of his neglected social media, which had been extremely popular once upon a time. He hadn’t had time to post anything new since their rescue.
Magnus sighed, leaning back against the wall. He wanted to post a photograph of him and Alec perhaps with Apollo, but mission control would want to approve everything first; the first photographic evidence of their new planet would have to be carefully chosen, and not a photo of Magnus gazing longingly at his ex-captain while they were waist-deep in lake water.  The longer he thought about it, the more Magnus realized that he was fine waiting. He didn’t need to rush to reconnect with the world so suddenly.
Ragnor was far more than enough for now. He would talk to Catarina and his cat soon. Maybe, he’d try calling Raphael but Raphael was always a bit of a hard person to handle over the phone. Either way, he had Alec and his family. He didn’t need much else.
Magnus glanced up at the sound of someone else coming down the hallway. He moved to stand, planning in his head to make a show of having dropped something so that he wouldn’t be caught alone on the ground, staring at a wall, but when the figure came closer, Magnus realized it was Alec.
Alec paused when he saw him, a frown appearing on his face. “Why are you on the floor?” He asked softly, clearly as concerned as Magnus had expected someone to be. With anyone else, he’d be embarrassed but with Alec, Magnus found it hard to care.
Magnus shrugged his shoulders.
Alec pressed his lips into a thin line, thinking about it for a moment, before he moved to sink down against the wall next to Magnus. “Okay,” he said slowly, looking to Magnus as he settled beside him. It reminded Magnus suddenly of them both outside their ship, in the sun on the ground together. “What are we doing?” Alec asked after a beat of silence.
Magnus laughed softly. “Just sitting,” he murmured as he took Alec’s hand in his own. He would think about what he’d share with the world later but for now, he was happy here, in this empty corridor, away from Earth and away from the chaos it would bring. He had Alec next to him, willing to sit with him on the ground if he wanted.
He didn’t need much else.
