Shinobi Economics 2: Warring States Boogaloo
RIGHT IT’S TIME FOR NINJA ECONOMICS 2: WARRING STATES BOOGALOO.
Link to my previous 3k tumblr rant on canon era shinobi economics here , and a casual reminder that I do not study or research economics a whole bunch outside of a casual interest for fantasy worldbuilding. Most of this is just- trying to logic out some semblance of sense inside the Naruto setting.
But to summarize the stuff I think is relevant to jumping into this one, in the previous ramble I established that:
1. Peacetime is actually Really Profitable for shinobi villages of the Nidaime to Boruto eras, because that’s when the lower classes (Merchant and Worker) can afford to pay shinobi for jobs that are ultimately the most money for the least amount of risk.
2. Shinobi villages set the prices of missions, not the clients (as seen in the premise of the Wave arc, where the bridge builder lied about the risk so that he only had to pay for a C rank instead of a B or A rank mission), and that whatever prices they have set for missions, it allows even a single parent shinobi with an active child to live comfortably in a city. Not wealthy necessarily, but clearly able to feed, clothe, shelter, and spend time with their child on top of work and training.
3. In all of canon, all the movies, even in Boruto (up to the point I’ve watched so far anyway), there is not a single shinobi that suggests going back to the warring state era. Not even the missing-nin. Not even Madara, who was more than happy to plot the downfall of every shinobi village and the world at large, tried to get them to go back to warring states (admittedly he was more interested in brainwashing everyone with an overgrown weed, but hey).
In that previous rant, I also made an offhand mention that Hashirama and Madara ending the war between their clans and making peace was them essentially inventing a ninja union, and I kind of want to come back to that in this rant by talking about what the Warring State Era ninja economy was probably like, considering what little we know in canon (ie the anime flashbacks which YES COUNT AS CANON since it makes exactly as much nonsense as the rest of Kishi’s worldbuilding),
Okay so. What do we know about the Warring State Era?
1. We know it was a very bloody time of frequent clan on clan fighting.
2. Medical chakra techniques/medicine in general were not as advanced (because Tsunade is infamous for her contributions to the world of medicine and she doesn’t exist yet) so fatalities or crippling injuries were definitely more common, and most shinobi wore samurai style armor which tells me:
2a. The armor was likely a response to how much easier it was back then for a shinobi to be crippled or killed through blood loss and infection (especially infection).
2b. It could also be a hold over from the Samurai era, since we honestly never get a straight answer from Kishi on where the heck Samurai fit into his swiss cheese timeline. There is, according to the Naruto wiki, a mention of them having split off from shinobi back when chakra use was still called ninshu but that makes … about as much sense as most of Kishi’s timeline and therefore is suspect at best and garbage at worst.
3. Child soldiers were even more of a thing than they are in the village era. For comparison, Kakashi was considered a prodigy for graduating and becoming a genin at 5, and Itachi was exposed to death at age 4, but that flashback is structured (in the anime at least) in a manner that implies that this was not the norm (thanks Fugaku) and that Itachi should not have been anywhere near the battlefield since he hadn’t even enrolled in Academy yet (canonically enrolled at age 6 and was allowed to take the graduation test a few months later). However in the Warring States Era flashback, Hashirama’s and Tobirama’s brother Kawarama died at age 7, and their father makes comments that imply Kawarama was considered at least enough of an adult to be a shinobi, which means he *probably* didn’t die on his first mission? Their other brother Itama, who we do not have an official age for but is clearly younger than Hashirama and Tobirama (who are drawn to at least appear 12 or younger) also dies young, probably around the same age as Kawarama did. We also see Izuna, during the river confrontation between Madara’s and Hashirama’s families, wielding a sword that is clearly *sized* for a child. Unlike Tobirama in that same scene who’s out here with an adult katana held on his back like a buster sword, Izuna is using a sword that looks like it was forged with a child his age in mind. Which … yeah. Not good. Hashirama and Madara also directly reference a desire for ending the deaths of children on the battlefield when they are discussing their dream of a village. So clearly children becoming shinobi at 6-7 and up was Not Uncommon.
4. Going off the continued existence of a Daimyo and his court in canon era, there were a lot of feudal lords in this era, hiring shinobi to do their dirty work. Not just Daimyo against Daimyo like we see in the village era Shinobi Wars, but likely neighboring lords hiring one shinobi clan or another to heckle, sabotage, and assassinate each other. Especially considering the Naruto world Warring States is clearly supposed to be reminiscent of the Sengoku period of Japan.
So, with those things in mind. How did shinobi economics in this era work and why was Konoha so revolutionary in more than just “hey the Senju and Uchiha aren’t killing each other!” way?
Well first thing is that the shinobi clans would have been at the whims of the various lords and the Daimyo rather than able to establish their own prices for missions, and the vast majority of the clan on clan conflicts would have either started or been fueled by the nobles of the era out of convenience. There are over 16 clans listed on the wiki as being “Konoha” clans, while we can discount a few of them (namely the Lee clan because that’s just Rock Lee, the Uzumaki who were from their own hidden village, and the Hoki family who I think immigrated in from Suna? If I’m reading the wiki right?), and those are just the clans that actually survived to the canon village era. That is a lot of competition for shinobi work in an era where most of those jobs would have come from the rich lords, the Daimyo himself, or a few very wealthy merchants would have been able to afford to both hire a shinobi clan and would have felt it worth the risk of gambling that their competitors wouldn’t also hire a shinobi clan to retaliate. The working class would not have been able to afford a shinobi’s services, and they also definitely wouldn’t want to risk going near a shinobi, because this era was when the clans would’ve had their bloodiest, most inhuman rumors and reputations as remorseless killers.
The staple/most common jobs for shinobi clans of that era would likely have been the violent ones that in the modern era get regulated to ANBU, because again, the Worker class can’t hire for D-ranks and the Merchant class probably either also couldn’t or wouldn’t want to unless desperate or trying to threaten their competition with the reputation of shinobi. These “common” jobs would have been assassinations of adults or children, kidnappings, sabotages, blackmail gathering, spying, and open battlefield conflicts (every Senju-Uchiha conflict we see in the flashback arc, not counting Itama’s death or the river confrontation, is on an open battlefield with both parties in varying levels of armor actually). And of course the other side of those common jobs would be missions from rival lords who are hiring a clan to prevent all the previously listed missions. Which is probably where a good chunk of clan animosities started, opposing contracts that got out of hand and started an all out blood feud.
If a wealthy merchant hired a clan to guard their product/caravan, it was probably because some competitor or a lord who took offense to them for some reason had already hired another shinobi clan to sabotage said caravan and product. If a lord hired a shinobi to kill a rival or his family, that rival had either already hired shinobi bodyguards or was going to in response to this. Which, on top of fueling a lot of clan on clan grudges from being repeatedly on opposite sides of a job, means that shinobi clans couldn’t really demand a specific mission prices. A little bit of haggling over the price, yes, especially in the case of the more powerful/sought after clans, but if a shinobi clan tried to push for “too much”, the prospective client could simply leave and hire another clan. Likely a rival clan that had a blood feud with the first clan just to spite them. Any failed missions or missions that were refused because of the pay or risk involved would also definitely lead to the client spreading word against that clan to any allies, which would lead to less missions and valuable income down the line.
The clans with the most ability to haggle, at least in Land of Fire, would *probably* have been the Four Noble Clans Kishi mentions; The Uchiha, The Aburame, the Akimichi, and the Hyuuga. We never have it explained why they are noble clans or why there is only four, but basic logic says that they were clans who actually held positions in the Daimyo’s court, and having that position would have helped them set at least *some* level of wage standard for shinobi work they took on so long as they were careful not to annoy the Daimyo in the process. But even then, there was only so much they could demand before there was a risk of the client leaving and taking any future business from them and their social circle with them.
The Uchiha-Senju conflict was said to last for generations. According to Kishi it lasted since Indra-Ashura thanks to Black Zetsu specifically, but that is stupid on multiple levels that I won’t fully cover here. It’s much more likely that the descendants of Indra and Ashura clashed a few times and mostly tried to avoid each other until the Warring States Era actually started, by which point those descendants were the Senju and Uchiha (and Uzumaki but they’re canonically a neutral party in that whole deal iirc). The blood feud *probably* started when a noble lord spotted the natural avoidance/borderline animosity of the Uchiha and Senju and hired the Senju to sabotage either an Uchiha job or even to attack the Uchiha themselves if the Uchiha held a position in the Daimyo’s court at that point. And because Uchiha do not react calmly to basically anything, the response was very bloody and over the top, to which the Senju also reacted poorly and… *gestures at the blood feud*. After that, warring lords would have started to intentionally hire the Uchiha and the Senju to pit them against each other because neither clan would haggle too much over the price of a job for fear of it being thrown to their enemy instead, and with both clans so eager to get revenge on the other as the years went on, they were guaranteed to give their all on the battlefield regardless of the mission pay. Which is a technique that would have been used against most of the clans to keep them from getting too powerful or too uppity about the pay for their jobs, but especially the dangerous ones with kekkei genkai.
With the inability to really dictate the prices of their shinobi work, the civilians of shinobi clans likely would have sought to provide some other form of goods and services to help bolster the clan (the civilians not busy trying to keep the clan fed anyway). This has been explored by other fanfic writers in this fandom (shout-out to Umei_no_Mai’s series “the Compass Points North” for being really great at this), but of course depending on the size of the clan and their access to resources that don’t immediately go to either Feeding the Clan or Providing For Shinobi Work, how much money this actually brought in for each clan is entirely variable.
So there’s the Warring States Era cycle of shinobi work. Lord A hires Clan 1 to Do Thing, Lord B hires Clan 1’s most hated rival if possible to Stop Thing, both lords sit back and watch the two clans fight it out for far less than their work is actually worth. Wash, rinse, occasionally repeat with clans that are not hated rivals but are still going to fight it out viciously because if they don’t do a good enough job then they will lose any further work from that client and the client’s associates.
And then the Uchiha-Senju Alliance happened, and did not disintegrate within weeks or months as outsiders would have anticipated.
And this one thing. This one alliance. Completely destroyed the “comfortable” cycle the lords, Daimyo, and wealthy merchants had for their shinobi dealings up to that point. Because now, not only are the two most powerful clans in Land of Fire no longer available to hire against each other, but they also have two clans’ worth of civilian trade and shinobi revenue to keep them from starving the first time they said “no” to a client, and any client they do say yes to has the pick of Senju shinobi, Uchiha shinobi, or a mixed team of the clans’ respective powerhouses.
What do you think the response was the first time a client approached literally any of the other clans and tried to hire them to go up against both Hashirama and Madara, or, just as scarily, Senju Tobirama with a grumpy Uchiha or three following on his heels.
The answer was no. The answer was heck no. The answer was we would literally rather starve rather than choose that flavor of suicide.
Because while other clans have clashed with the Senju and Uchiha before during this era thanks to it being logistically impossible for someone to hire a Senju to fight an Uchiha and visa versa every time, those clashes would still have been comparatively rare but memorable. Similar to the nobles funding these blood feuds, the other shinobi clans of Land of Fire would have grown accustomed to “your chances of dying via Tree Man or Angry Fire Cat Man are statistically low” and being able to kinda sit back and watch the Senju and Uchiha tear each other apart from a safe distance, with only minimal risk of running into far less skilled Uchiha or Senju on a job rather than the guy who gets named the “god of shinobi” and his frenemy rival. They’ve seen the damage either clan can do, and now you want them to go against both? Without the guarantee of Madara and Hashirama (and Tobirama and Izuna pre the latter’s death) being too busy trying to kill each other to bother with you and your squishy clanmates? Hahahaha no.
And now here’s where the Shinobi Villages are a Union thing really starts to kick in. Because the Senju-Uchiha alliance grinding the Warring States cycle to a halt would have been temporary if it had just been between them, if Hashirama’s and Madara’s dream had gone no further than peace between their respective clans. If it had remained just the Senju-Uchiha alliance, even with fear of Hashirama and Madara, the other clans would have eventually been prodded into fighting them, likely even being hired by enough lords who were all unhappy with this shakeup to the routine to temporarily band together in fighting the Senju and Uchiha and overwhelm them (or at least badly cripple the manpower of the Senju-Uchiha).
But Hashirama’s and Madara’s dream wasn’t just about their clans. And suddenly here’s Hashirama “my smile is photosynthesizable” Senju and Madara “consider my wrath as your alternative” Uchiha approaching the other clans and offering to let them join this alliance. To not have the risk of fighting either of these terrifying men or their clans, but rather to pool their resources together to make missions safer. To be able to turn down missions without starving thanks to the combined revenue of multiple clans and their civilian specialties (and the backing of the Uzumaki, who are generally accepted by fanon to have allied with the Senju by this point via Mito’s marriage), and to have other clans be extremely wary of taking any job against their combined might, which will make the jobs they do take a whole lot safer.
Not every clan jumps on board right away of course, canonically the first ones to join the alliance were the Sarutobi and the Shimura (fanon assumes that these two had connections to the Senju and Uchiha clans before this but I … couldn’t find mention of that in the wiki?), which means suddenly any job this alliance takes means that a rival will be up against a roulette wheel of anywhere from “maybe four Senju like normal” to “combined wrath of a Senju-Uchiha-Sarutobi-Shimura team that are working out their collective new-alliance stress on your hide”. The other clans would have chosen to jump aboard the alliance very quickly once it became clear that this wasn’t going away or splintering. Which means more and more clans are saying “no” to jobs that they feel aren’t worth the prices being offered, and less and less clans are willing to go against the alliance for fear of being stomped on. Suddenly the clans who are in the alliance can not only say no but can say “I want to be paid this much for this job” and the lords who once had the option to just take their business to another clan are stuck. They had to either pay up or not have the job done at all.
Tobirama comes in, probably somewhere very early on in the village founding with the start of what will eventually be the universal shinobi mission ranking system, and with that comes the ability for shinobi to have a set minimum wage for each level of risk. There’s an Academy for their children to learn skills from multiple clans and sources now rather than being forced to take to the field just to help pay for food/armor/resources for the clan.
In the real world, this kind of change takes … way longer on average. But in the Naruto world the options from the get-go were “be under Hashirama’s and Madara’s protection” or “be a potential enemy against them and their clans on a mission”, and none of the shinobi clans who survived to that point did so by being stupid. After they saw the Sarutobi and Shimura join without negative consequences (or subjugation as vassals), the clans of Land of Fire would have started joining the alliance faster than the nobles who used their blood feuds as a handy leash could keep up with or compensate for. Canon says something along the lines of the village negotiating with the Daimyo for permission to be there but realistically by the time the Daimyo realized this was not just a passing treaty, that the Ninja Union was not going away, it was already far too late to stop it. Trying to starve the alliance into compliance by cutting off their trades would have only meant that every shinobi clan now on board with Konoha’s existence (read; the majority of them) would overthrow the Daimyo and install a more cooperative leader in his place. Heck, for all we know that’s what happened, it’s not like Kishi bothers to keep a coherent history or timeline. But considering the Daimyo does have a say in who the Hokage of the village is and they are enough at the Daimyo’s beck and call to fight in the future Shinobi Wars, it is more likely that the budding Konoha did successfully negotiate with the Daimyo for a “our loyalty and your nominal supervision over our village in exchange for extra land and free reign over our internal structure” kind of deal.
The clans being united was also an advantage for the Daimyo, once he got over the “can no longer charge whatever he wants for assassinations”. Because with all the Land of Fire clans unified, suddenly any upstart lords looking to depose him or wars he might get up to with other Daimyo look a lot more winnable. The other major Elemental nations, seeing this and realizing it’s not going away, probably scrambled to get their own clans to unify, which is one reason why Kiri is … such a disaster in canon. Rather than being a willing endeavor by the various clans to unite for their own benefit, the Daimyo of Water basically threw all his feral clans off their respective islands and territories and said “you all live here now and you all do what I tell you or else the Land of Fire will wipe us out”. Which, as you can see, went swimmingly for them (sarcasm). That or the other shinobi clans in the various nations did actually unionize of their own will once they saw it worked for Konoha, but Kiri never got the memo of “actually make peace with your rivals” and instead just clustered together in a feral knot of “we hate each other but we hate outsiders MORE so we’re going to pretend we actually function as a society”. Which lasted… Not long.
And there you go, another shinobi economics ramble. I feel like this one is even less structured than the last one but hey at least it’s like. 100 whole words shorter.

25 City Ruins Adventure Seeds
by Robb at readytorole.com
Treasure hunters claim to hear the voices of children playing in a walled off section of the city, but can’t find a way to get in. The voices fade at night but no adults are heard calling them.
A half-ogre calling himself the Baron of the Wastes has taken up residence in the city, and is recruiting any monsters who will work with him. Those who have gotten close enough to hear say that he is looking to build an army to terrorize the countryside.
Strange, colorful lights appear over the city at night swirling and dancing in the sky. In the morning they descend atop a preserved, hard to access tower in the center of the city.
A merchant who has returned from the ruins of the city is selling treasures she has uncovered. A family who claims to be originally from there says that some of those treasures belong to their family but have no proof, and therefore are looking for those who can help.
Giant webs have quickly been cast, covering nearly the entire city in a week. As the webs begin to reach toward local forests and villages and giant spiders have been spotted, panic has erupted and a search for a way to deal with them is underway.
Orcs and trolls have been fighting over control of the ruins for months now, but recently crudely written signs have appeared asking for mercenaries to join the orcs. They claim that they just want to have a place to stay but the trolls are set on destroying the city.
A thick miasma has been emanating from city ruins, making nearby travelers sick with an unknown illness. The local magistrate wants an investigation to take place and put an end to it.
A lone skeleton wearing old, tattered finery was seen near the city, waving arms towards travelers and making strange sounds. Some say it appeared as though it was beckoning them towards the city, but none have been foolish enough to approach.
A large crystal fragment brought back from the city has recently awakened, speaking telepathically to any nearby asking for help. They are claiming to be a soul from the past, and begs those who might be willing to return with them to prevent the city’s destruction to do so.
A black dragon wyrmling has recently made its nest in the city, claiming the area for itself with the help of some kobold followers. A kobold recently came to civilization to hand over a note saying as much and warning people to stay away and pay a tithe.
Ghosts go about their business in an old tavern, not even aware that they’re dead. One lone soul is aware and asks for help finding and burying the physical remains of those inside so that they all may finally rest.
A group of ragged, nearly feral humans and elves have been sighted near the city, causing speculation about their ancestry. Some believe that they are the descendants of those who went into hiding when the city fell and that all efforts should be made to make peace with them.
Every night, glowing footprints appear leading into the city’s marketplace, where they confusingly walk in circles and are hard to follow to any determinable destination. They disappear in the sunlight and show up in a new pattern afterwards.
A giant effigy in the city that can be seen from the road is being built and expanded upon by gnolls, who flock to the city in growing numbers. People are understandably frightened by this, especially since the gnolls appear to be growing in size as the effigy grows.
The Builders Guild is looking to hire some protection in the city as they’ve been contracted to start demolishing and rebuilding parts of the city. Since they started at least one worker gets found turned to stone each day.
Last night, various spells could be seen going off around an intact tower, leading some to believe a wizard has been alive in the city this whole time. A friend of the city’s archmage holds out hope that it is him and wants to make contact with the wizard.
Every year, the villagers that live near the city gather and light candles around the city’s perimeter. They say this wards off the evil spirits and souls of the dead inside the city from coming out and attacking them, but this year the candles won’t stay lit for more than a moment.
Golems made from old debris have been stalking around the city, aggressively attacking nearby travelers by throwing more debris at them. Who made these monsters, and why protect an abandoned pile of rubble?
Buildings in the city have started collapsing, leaving some to wonder what’s going on behind the broken walls. Some brave scouts who have ventured in say that they are seeing huge holes and tunnels appearing under the city, and the buildings are falling in.
A floating castle has drifted over the city and stopped, and long rope ladders have been lowered. The heraldry on the castle and those descending the ladders is entirely unfamiliar to any who see them.
Highwaymen have been harassing travelers and have taken some hostages inside of the city. They are asking for weapons made of silver rather than gold in exchange for their safety.
A beam of red light shines down onto the city, directly onto the temple of the goddess of life. This is an unheard of occurrence, and her followers want answers.
A statue of the ruined city’s first ruler has been successfully excavated and moved to safety into a nearby town. Now, small cracks are appearing and moisture seeps out through the eyes of the statue, leading many to believe it is cursed.
Excavators claim to have uncovered a secret passage under the castle, and say they believe it was filled with treasures unaccounted for by history. However, after the first attack by undead, they would rather experienced adventurers clear it out in exchange for a cut of the treasure.
According to the local alchemist, a very rare gem is required to make the antidote to the plague that is spreading around. The last known location of one is set in the throne in the heart of the ruined city.

Cummittees for we older folks who are liberal and interested
I like the idea of communties, especially for we older folks.
I was born in 1940. My mother married my dad in 1938, after I was born, WW II started, my dad moved us to Los Angeles where my dad tried to join the military and join the war, he was not allowed in because of his wearing glasses, and me. We moved to Las Vegas, a brand-new town building up out of the desert and near Hoover Dam, where he was an architectect and builder, and helped to build Las Vegas out of the desert floor. My sister was born there in 1943.
My dad was getting known as a builder, and a great help to building Las Vegas. He also build a building to be used by the Church of Christ, which was my mother's religious leaning. After WW II was over, in 1946, men started coming back home, including several uncles, my mother's brothers, and my mother told my dad she wanted to take me and my sister back to Corpus Christi, TX, to see her brothers, my uncles. I remember well the train trips from Los Angeles to Corpus Christi, and the many servicemen that were with us. Yes, they loved this little girl of about 5 years old.
After a while, my mother refused to return to her husband, my dad. I am aware that my grandmother was on my side, felt sorry for me as I was definitely my daddy's girl, but of no use. My dad, as a man, was taken up by a woman in Las Vegas, and being a man during those days, was caught up with her. As my mother has informed him that she was not going to return, and Joyce tricked my dad into believing she was pregnant (it was learned later that she was incapable of having children), my mother allowed my dad to get a divorce. The church threw him out. My mother that he bitched that he would not even send her her iron. My sister and I lost all our toys and things because of the loss of our home. We did own our home in a place called Huntridge. I remember the house and the toys and the tub of water when both Patti and I got the measles, then the mumps, one after the other. I remember it all.
Moving forward a many years, my mother married a second time, then they had two children, and Patti and I were left behind as being not his children. In the meantime, we had been led to believe our daddy didn't want us any longer. Patti was young enough not to remember him, but I wasn't, and I was definitely a daddy's girl.
My sister caught fire in 1957. She was burned badly (she did survive, but that is a different story), and my mother contacted my dad. I never got over him, though I was angry because I thought he didn't want me, and after I got out of high school, I moved to Las Vegas to meet and be with him.
Joyce, his second wife, was not a friend of mine. One of her sisters had a daughter Sharon, who taught me how to smoke. I got my first job in Vegas, and lived a pretty good life. But I started drinking. I had my first child in 1961, went back to Corpus, had my step-father theatren to rape me because I had a child out of marriage, and I went back to LV with my daughter. I worked in some of the casinos as change girls, started drinking, and ended up at a dude ranch outside the city where I was a barmaid and a cook, and lived there. I was really drinking by then, had an abortion, had a second child, and moved back to CC in 1964. By then the 60s movement was in full stride. JFK had been murdered, and I was trying to raise two children by myself. I had a good job, but my drinking was out of hand, I gave my two children up to forage, and took over as management of a merchant seaman's bar in late 1964. During the year of 1965, I gave up my two girls for adoption.
Drinking alcohol was my choice during the next few years. I was all involved over the war in Vietnam, drinking, sleeping around, and moving from place to place in 1968. I had had a child in 1967, gave it up for adoption, moved with a couple of friends to Biloxi, MS, got pregnanted one more time, moved to Wichita Falls, TX, had a seond child in 1969, and finally moved back to Corpus Christi, where I tried to find work. I got there, but I didn't stop drinking, and eventually found another job, which I lost because of my drinking. I went to work as a change person, stopped drinking in 1973 because of the alcohol, moved to Austin in 1975, and got real work.
I was at the University of Texas for well over 22 years, and also worked in radio where I programmed Celtic music, and because of the p roblems of women being discriminated against women, finally went into early retirement in 2003. I did some cleaning of apartments for a friend of mine, but when it became difficult for me, stopped, and moved into assisted housing in 2009.
I served on the Board of Directors, put up with a lot of changes of the apartment complex, went suicidal (fourth time over the years), got psysological help in 2019, had a nervous breakdown in 2020, then Covid came along which kept me penned up, wrote my autobiography. In 2021, I started drinking again. I drink my scotch every day, not enough to get drunk (though that happened once because of some music and memories coming together) and drink a few drams every day. I was going to quit smoking, but decided I don't want to do that.
I fight all the time for my rights as a human being, as a woman, for fairness for all. I am a liberal Democrat, support a couple of organizations that help people, and keep up with politics, to my sorrow. I have found Acorn TV and British shows. It keeps me calm. I take an antianxiety pill, in spite of mixing it with alcohol. I have overcome suicide attempts, a life with liars about my father, been able to have him as a friend before he died in 1984, and never been in love or tied myself to anyone. I am independent, survive by my own wits.
And yes, I fell in love with Sam because he is the man I might have been able to survive with half a lifetime (mine) ago. And no, I use common sense, and I know he can not ever be in love with me, and in fact, does not even know I exist. There are reasons why he moved me so much,
If these communities are brought to reality, I know there are other folks in my age group who would be interested. I expect to live a long time. In fact, I have overcome so many things that I believe I must be immortal.
I love this site. It has people who believe as I do, that everyone is equal, has the right for their sexuality, their lifestyle, their habits, their hobbies, their caring for the general population. I love you all, so don't judge me for loving Sam.
Could have used him when I was his age that he is now, and I am well beyond.
Comments and criticisms welcome. But be careful unless you have walked in my shoes.

guild cultures in four stones
(none of this was based on real beliefs or cultures i made it all up in my head i am hoping so much nothing in here is offensive if it is please lmk!!!)
notes of new jobs i added rq:
archive: cat who notes down and keeps track of major events within their guild merchant: cat who trades resources and goods with the other guilds guard: cat who guards the guild’s camp from intruders
ok here!!!
willow guild:
willow guild cats believe the water was meant for them. they can hold their breath beneath the water for a very long time because they spend so much time in it
willow cats are rumored by other guilds to be able to breathe underwater, but they can’t
the willow guild also holds respect for summer, which is “their” season
they hold value in shells; they use them for decoration, paint, medicine, cups for water, and currency
they trade their shells with other guilds for paint and medicine in return for the other guilds’ currency of choice
between one another, they also will trade small fish for things
fish are their main source of food. they thank the waters they catch them from, well aware of the fact that their food is more abundant than the other guilds
they are also known to hunt water birds such as herons and ducks, but they are less common and considered a sort of delicacy
they don’t hold the rivers and ocean up as a god per se, but they do believe they are alive and they respect them highly for granting them food and safety
they hold willow trees to a similar height
willow cats speak with warmth and friendliness. they treat each other as friends regardless of how well they know each other. terms of endearment are common
willow guild cats love song and stories. when possible, some may sing to themselves near constantly. telling stories and singing songs are their favorite group bonding activities
cats born in willow tend to be smaller in stature and rounder in size on average compared to other cats
willow guild cats don’t often push authority over each other. they consider everyone family, and family treats family equally. if a willow cat enforces their rank, you know you fucked up
willow guild cats have the standard jobs; hunter(also called fishermen), ranger, caretaker, cleric, messenger, builder, archive, merchant, and guard, along with pod and channeler
pods are cats that track fish populations and habits over the seasons
channelers watch the rivers and reroute them as needed throughout the seasons
pine guild:
pine guild cats value stealth over all else. if a cat isn’t stealthy, they are typically looked down upon
rumor has it that they can melt into shadows, and are the subject of many a scary kit tale
they consider the cold mountainous territory as meant for them, and they are the fiercest in protecting their land
they have respect for the snow and wintertime, and it is considered “their” season, when they are strongest
they value mushrooms, using them to trade with the other guilds as well as make paint and decorations. some even wear them
they also commonly trade feathers with one another
they are able to hunt anything from squirrels and birds to small deer and elk. they are put into special teams in order to take on bigger prey.
they see wolves, coyotes, and foxes as deities. they keep their distance and cats will look at them in respect
wolves are the highest deities, as they are the biggest. wolves never hunt cats, and storytellers will say that they are too important to hunt for their own food, though they can. it is thought that coyotes, the most common predator, hunts for the wolves
they hold pine trees to a similar height, often claiming to be spoken to by them
pine cats are quiet and cold in mannerisms. they don’t like to talk much, and are thought of as stiff and to the point in their words.
pine cats do not like music outside of celebrations. singing for fun is considered asking for trouble from predators, or scaring away prey willingly
they do, however, greatly enjoy stories. storytellers are often the most popular
cats born in pine are big and thick-furred. they easily tower over most other guilds’ cats, and are scary to face in battle
pine cats highly value rank. everyone has their place, and they will enforce it as much as they need to
pine guild cats have the standard jobs; hunter, ranger, caretaker, cleric, messenger, builder, archive, merchant, and guard, along with wolfwalker and tracker
wolfwalkers track and keep tabs on the wolves and coyotes in their territory
trackers watch over the herds of deer and elk, and work with hunters to know when and where to perform a catch
maple guild:
maple guild cats highly value the ability to climb and be high in trees. being scared of heights there is a nightmare
the forest is theirs in their minds. most are willing to protect their territory fiercely
one tactic that has worked surprisingly well is spreading rumors about themselves. their biggest rumor is that their territory is haunted by spirits of cats who trespassed
“their” season is fall, when the maples are considered to be at their prime. they value the changing leaves highly and will decorate their camp and dens with them, some even choosing to wear them
they value seeds of trees, mostly maple seeds, and use them as currency. their currency is considered worth the least. they trade them with the other guilds for various things, and are used in medicines and paint
they trade leaves between themselves often as well, considered the prettiest thing to decorate nests with
their prey almost entirely consists of small woodland animals like squirrels, birds, and mice
they view deer as a deity of sorts, the guide to the afterlife. they keep their distance from them as a sign of respect
maple cats are the most spiritual of the guilds, highly valuing the afterlife and spirits of cats. they are not necessarily religious, as they don’t have rules to follow to get to their afterlife. they are the most at peace with death, generally
they also view maple trees highly, often believing they are the most in tune to spirits and that they repel evil spirits
maple cats are rather subdued in nature. they aren’t the most talkative sort, but they speak miles more than pine cats. they’re polite and formal unless they’re talking with close friends and family
maple cats love music, preferring slower softer hymns. they love to sing to the trees, believing that it helps them keep up their strength and power to keep away evil spirits. stories are reserved for mostly only kits, considered a childish thing by older cats. they often tell their stories in songs instead
cats in maple are on the smaller side, but are typically pretty average in size for cats. they’re often rather sturdy in build, with toned shoulders
maple cats are rather lax in their ranks, but it is still loosely followed in their day to day tasks
maple guild cats have the standard jobs; hunter, ranger, caretaker, cleric, messenger, builder, archive, merchant, and guard, along with pathmaker and medium
pathmakers create and maintain paths through the territory
mediums are spiritually attuned cats that help guide spirits to a place called the deer’s hollow, where they believe a deer deity will take them to the afterlife
beech guild:
beech guild cats value speed very highly, and it isn’t uncommon for them to race each other to settle disputes
they value the fields and hills, and like to believe it was made for them
beech guild cats are the best at identifying gemstones and certain minerals. they use the more common kinds as currency and make them into paint when applicable
they are rumored to be fast enough to not be seen, but they aren’t quite that fast. they are decently faster than any other cats, though
they like to call spring “their” season, as the grasses grow again and flowers dot their hills
they use chips of gemstones as currency, trading them with other guilds. beech cats are considered the best at getting and making paint as they have a lot of rocks to use in it
they hunt fieldmice and rabbits mostly, with the occasional other prey from the neighboring lands
beech cats believe that stones have healing and spiritual powers. they use various crystals to protect their health and keep them strong. meanwhile, they don’t really believe in an afterlife; they believe that a cat who dies’ spirit goes into a crystal to aid living cats, hence the source of the powers. their dead are buried with part of the crystal they went into, as a source
they view beech trees highly, as they are the most common in their territory. they believe that the trees ward evil away, preventing evil from disrupting the cycle of becoming a crystal’s source. the source tree is the large one in the center of their camp
beech cats are very chatty, often being compared to birds. they are a little blunt, though they try not to be; they value honesty highly, and would rather be told the truth upfront
singing is common in the beech guild, with the belief that it helps spirits within the crystals. songs are shared often, and they love to sing loudly
beech cats are the most creative in their stories as well, often painting visuals to go along. their camp walls are covered in paintings
beech cats aren’t all that strong, but they are tall and lean. they have long legs and tails commonly
cats don’t lean very hard on the ranks of each cat, but it is enforced if someone is wildly out of line
beech guild cats have the standard jobs; hunter, ranger, caretaker, cleric, messenger, builder, archive, merchant, and guard, along with miner and secretary
miners are cats tasked with finding and collecting crystals and minerals
the secretary is the cat that tracks all the tasks for a day and keeps everyone on schedule

On July 8th 1790 The Forth and Clyde Canal between the rivers Forth and Clyde, 22 years in the making, opened.
The first major canal to be built in Scotland, the Forth and Clyde was an ambitious project to build a coast-to-coast ship canal across central Scotland. After much arguing about what form it should take (Glasgow merchants favoured a smaller barge canal from the Forth to Glasgow, whereas most of the rest of Scotland wanted the more ambitious ship canal), construction began at Grangemouth on the Forth in 1768.
By 1790, the canal had been pushed right through to Bowling on the River Clyde, a distance of 35 miles, with a two mile branch into the centre of Glasgow. A series of twenty locks took the canal up from the Forth to its summit reach near Castlecary, and on the other side of the country nineteen locks descended from Maryhill to the Clyde. The canal also boasted what was at the time the largest aqueduct in Britain over the River Kelvin, and 38 wooden double-leaf opening bridges known as bascule bridges.
The canal quickly became a popular route. Fishing boats and yachts used it to cross from one side of Scotland to the other. Industries, from iron works to timber yards to boat builders to distilleries and more, sprang up along the banks. Villages and towns that were previously hard to get to, like Kirkintilloch, prospered as they took advantage of this new transport artery. The canal system was extended when the Monkland Canal connected to the Forth and Clyde at Port Dundas, Glasgow in 1791, and the Union Canal to Lock 16, Falkirk in 1822. Various smaller branch canals were built, including "short cuts" to the River Carron in the east and the Clyde in the west.
Passenger boats used the canal extensively too. Fast boats known as "Swifts" which ran all the way from Glasgow to Edinburgh using the Forth and Clyde and Union Canals were established. At the time they were far safer and more comfortable than the road-based alternatives. There were also much-loved pleasure steamers (the "Queens") that sailed out from Glasgow to a nice rural location at Craigmarloch.
But traffic declined severely in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, largely due to competition from first railways and then roads. Despite closure of the lock flight to the Union Canal in 1933, and of the Monkland Canal in 1952, the Forth and Clyde was maintained as a coast-to-coast route until the early 1960s. Then, when the A80 Glasgow to Stirling road was being upgraded to dual carriageway, it was deemed too costly to build a lifting bridge over the canal. Instead it was closed to navigation, and was quickly cut into sections by the new A80 and various other developments. Over a mile of canal was filled in at the Grangemouth end, and shorter sections were also filled in near Clobberhill and on the Glasgow branch. Many road bridges were replaced by culverts, and the remaining lock gates and opening bridges were fixed in position. Only a small section at Bowling was maintained in working order.
Thankfully, many people could see the potential for leisure and urban renewal that a restored canal could bring. They campaigned to save both the Forth and Clyde and Union canals from further damage and eventually to reopen them to boats. Pleasure craft began to return to the better preserved sections of the canal in the 1970s, although at this time there were still occasional road blockages being built. By the 80s, the restoration movement had gathered momentum - no more culverts or low bridges were built and some of the cut off sections were being reopened. Finally, thanks to a substantial grant from the National Lottery Millennium Fund, the canal was fully restored and reopened from sea to sea in May 2001. The following year, the Falkirk Wheel opened, reconnecting the Forth and Clyde to the Union Canal for the first time since 1933.
Although the canal is open again now, various further improvements have been made since 2001, or are still in progress. The original terminal basins at Port Dundas have been reconnected to the Glasgow branch of the canal with the construction of two new locks. And at the Grangemouth end, the Helix project has built a much improved link from the canal to the River Forth, with the Kelpies given pride of place there.

Luinlalaith
Tumblr media
(Disclaimer: Luin is a character belonging to a friend. But she has graciously let me play with her. And in return she and other friends play with some of my characters relations :))
Alias: Luinlalaith Idhrengur
Race/class: Guardian Sindar elf
Sexuality: Straight
Gender: Elleth
Age: 5000+
Residence: Caras Galadhon.
Spouse: Curonthos (played by @elgaladwen)
Children: None (do cats and random forest animals count?)
Nature
Composed: Luin is a steady force. Her even air can soothe a sparking conflict. Her past has prepared her for the worst possible outcomes, and so she is unfazed by the hardships of everyday life. With the exception of the death of close loved ones.
Responsible: Never failing to finish what she sets out to accomplish. This is especially evident with her duties, past and present, as a guard . She doesn’t falter too easily when attending to her duties. Then and now.
Wise: Luin may have been younger when the Second Age drew to a close, but her experiences have left her with a wealth of knowledge of people, the outside world, and knowing how to fight. She possesses decent judgement of others and situations.
Bold: She will readily offer her voice in a conversation and isn’t afraid to make suggestions that she deems to be the best in a situation. Luin is willing to act out against the majority if the masses disagree. Nothing will stop her when she has her mind set on something, even if that involves a lick of danger, such as visiting her husband while he’s out on scouting duties.
Maternal: Luin feels very protective of the children around her, and is often the first to take up baby sitting jobs. She dotes on them perhaps too much. Though she respects her husbands wishes to not have children due to personal trauma on his part, she can’t help but yearn for a child of her own someday. In the meantime she also takes in injured wildlife and nurses them back to health, reluctant to let them go when they’ve recovered.
Nostalgic: The older Luin gets, the more she spends time reflecting on the past. She may lose herself in reverie, whether swimming in memories of joy or bad times. She often speaks of the past as well, though is careful to not bring up the more unpleasant times.
Solemn: Prefers to keep herself composed, dignified, and formal in the face of strangers or acquaintances. Only really lets herself laugh freely and act playful when around her husband and other close relations.
History
Born and raised in Lindon during the middle second Age. During her younger centuries she worked as a caravan guard for merchant elves travelling to and from the newer elvish settlement of Imladris. Eventually worked her way up to being stationed permanently in Lindon guarding important ports of entry. Used to be quite loud with a child-like playfulness, though her duties and admonishing looks from those who were stuck in the tragedies of the past quieted and tempered much of that spirit. In her free time she was fond of working with her hands, often taking up the arts of sewing, rope-making, and even going down to the docks to watch the ship builders, where she would help a friend of hers with the more menial tasks.
Before Numenor’s fall she had often heard the stories about the mighty Mallorn forests that grew near some of it’s shores. And though it would be another millennia until elves were forbidden utterly from the isle, the ban of the elven tongue made her parents worried, and they implored her not to travel there. The fact that mellyrn couldn’t grow in Lindon did not help her desire to see them someday.
Near the time of the downfall of Numenor, felt a great, uneasy quiet within herself and the world at large. Asked to be assigned to a group of fellow elves visiting Lorien, which was ruled by Amdir at the time, thinking traveling might help her unease. On the way there, she went on ahead during a rainy night to patrol while the envoy rested. Somewhere there she met a couple silvan scouts of Lorien by the name of Curonthos and his brother. She grew fond of the former during a brief stay there, and would find herself going back and forth between the two elven realms just to visit him. In time she fell in love, and they were wed. She later went to live with him in Lorien. Tried her best to adapt to the ways of the Silvan elves who lived there originally. Put her guard experience to good use in that realm also.
Was secretly overjoyed that Curonthos would stay in Lorien to guard the realm with her when the War of the Last Alliance broke out. Though was heart broken to learn his brother, who had went instead, was slain, and even moreso knowing how much he meant to her husband and others.
When the war was over and the world entered the Third age, she tried her best to comfort Curonthos and help him through his grief. Amroth became the ruler of Lorien, as his father was also slain in the war. Though he himself was lost later on. Luinlalaith was hesitant to accept Galadriel and Celeborn as Lord and Lady, hoping they would not disturb the native Silvan elves even further. While she’s not quite satisfied with their sovereignty, she does appreciate that they have seemed to adapt more to their culture more than Amdir and Amroth had, as little as may be thought. Even better is the fact that Galadriel had brought Mallorn seeds, and though they never grew to the greatness of the ones in Numenor, it was enough. Luinlalaith made good friends with their neighbors, Gallorith and Elgaladwen, as the former was the best friend of Curonthos’s brother.
She now lives in unchanging relative peace in Caras Galadhon in the wake of Sauron’s defeat, still serving as a guard for the main gates of the place. But despite the peace In this day and age she worries for Curonthos during his scouting missions. Being a mother is something she thinks she might want, but her husbands trauma has convinced him that he will die ere a child is born to them, leaving it without a father. Luinlalaith hears the call of the sea, but her will is strong enough still for her to remain in Middle-Earth for many more years to come, until men can prove trustworthy stewards of it.

⌚️, 🏰, 🌎, & 🐄 for Trin 💜
Thank you! I know I went through this entire ask list for Trin a while back lol, but I'll answer again because some answers have already changed!
⌚️ Trin is not a 76er. She was born in Colorado and mostly grew up between there and California, and she's descended from the Lost Hills Brotherhood of Steel and the Ciphers (a Van Buren faction that my brain has latched onto). She also happens to have been born more than 150 years after the canon events of 76, so... yeah, there's that. Her very presence in West Virginia shatters the official canon! As for how she ended up there, she set off wandering on her own for the first time as soon as she was deemed old and responsible enough, and liked the look of WV enough to stick around and eventually settle down.
🏰 Her camp functions as a mini settlement that houses four people (plus Trin's cat). She has tentatively named both the camp structure itself and the teeny population 'Traylink', which is an amalgamation of the names Trin and Kayli (fellow camp builder and resident).
The basic layout: The primary structure itself is a narrow single story building made of vault walls (basically a glorified corridor lol). Inside is a bed, her vending machine, a tinker's workbench, a generator, and tons of painting and other wall art. Outside is Beckett's bar, a radiation warning sign stuck to a tree, a few campfires and turrets, some chairs, an ace flag, a solar panel, a radiation glove box, and last but not least a Nuka Cola mystery machine.
🌎 In most circumstances, her favourite biome is the Forest. She'd certainly never live in any other region full-time. The Forest has plenty of resources, and the nuke-free zone is a big bonus for her peace of mind. If she hadn't been lucky enough to unknowingly build within the protected area in the first place, she would have definitely relocated there once she learned where it was.
However, she's also mildly Scorched, and so occasionally succumbs to the tempting pull of the Cranberry Bog. She also loves using the cliffs near Kerwood Mine as photo op spots for the views across the entire Bog.
🐄 She's not officially affiliated with Blue Ridge, but she does get along with a lot of the individual merchants and caravan guards (mostly Aries, Rudy, Eugenie and Libby) and will help out where she can. She has considered joining as a caravan guard at one point, but decided she wasn't ready to formally commit herself to the caravan life.

Slime 😭😭😭 I remember way back when before I realised you could steal the leads of traveling merchants I'd look for slime for goddamn hours smh. I used to do a lot of farming in minecraft but these days I usually just get cows for milk and sheep for wool and food. Maybe a chicken or two if I wanna be fancy and use cakes for healing.
At some point I got a bit into redstone cause I wanted to make a cool switching glass elevator but then I just forgot about it and now that server is deleted and gone so 😭 maybe I could try building that and also make an xp farm. I'm a builder but I can't build for aesthetic reasons it has to be for game progression or to make my ingame life easier
slime is a pain in the ass to get if you don't want to cheat (use chunk finders for slime spawning) or if you don't have a swamp near your base. now redstone is a big no, i already struggle with simple farms 😭 but you go off! it's interesting to see people actually understanding how redstone works

Mound Builders
At the dawn of prehistory, Native Americans entered Georgia and prospered in our warm, fertile land that was blessed with plentiful sunshine and rainfall. They hunted and gathered for a time, then settled in permanent villages in a farm society that grew ever more complicated. Soon there was an organized religion, areas set aside for ceremonial purposes, and a trading network.
Georgia's first Mound Builders erected round stacks of stone in structures that averaged five feet in height and four feet in diameter. They were flat on top, made up of three-cornered stones wedged together so skillfully without mortar that thousands remain intact 3,000 years after their construction. You can find these structures scattered throughout central and northeast Georgia in clusters, with no discernible purposes. Many more may have existed in Gwinnett County, forming a giant serpent effigy. Unfortunately, most of these have been destroyed residential and commercial development in one of America's fastest-growing counties.
Chatsworth's Winding Wall
In the Cohutta Mountains east of Chatsworth is another stone relic from our prehistoric past. At Fort Mountain, perched atop a rugged peak at 2,800 feet, is an 885-foot-long stone wall that zigzags along the mountainside. It was probably larger once, but it is now three feet in height and twelve feet thick at the base. Each flank features a large, square pit, and at intervals along the wall are twenty-nine "foxholes."
Since this winding wall was discovered, controversy has raged over its originators. Were they Spanish explorers, ancient Phoenician merchants, Viking raiders, a Welsh prince named Madox, or moon-eyed albinos of Cherokee myth? The wall's purpose may have been defensive, although there are other theories about its purpose. One amateur archaeologist thought it was a destination for Native American honeymooners. Astronomer John Burgess has found that part of the wall aligns with the summer solstice. Other portions of this enigmatic construction might have acted as a prehistoric calendar, much like Stonehenge in England. The controversy has yet to be resolved, but today the wall is the center of a popular state park.
Similar mystery walls have been found on many other mountains in Georgia. Some have been demolished or fallen victim to erosion, but some do exist. Forever holding their secrets to themselves, they wind along the mountains of the state, silent reminders of a time and people we know little about.
The Enormous Eagle of Eatonton
Georgia's most famous stone mind is found near Eatonton, at Rock Eagle 4-H Camp, named for the huge eagle effigy constructed on a hilltop. This bird is enormous. Composed of thousands of mounded quartz stones, it rises to a height of ten feet and spreads its wings to a length of 120 feet. The body is sixty feet long and thirty-five wide. It's so huge that visitors must climb a three-story tower to take in the whole thing.
There's a smaller effigy, called the Rock Hawk, at Lawrence Shoals Recreation Area ten miles away. In poorer conditions than the eagle, it has a thicker body but shorter wings.
Structures like this are difficult to date but may be up to 4,000 years old.
Nearby in Monroe County there used to be an enormous forty-foot stone pile, surrounded by a number of stone rings. Unfortunately, this priceless artifact was declared nonprehistoric and was destroyed during the construction of a power plant.

The Prince and the Horsemaster's Daughter
This is a tale of times long past, a world that lives on now only in stories. This is a tale of magic and wonder and the beauty of things, of the running grasses and the wandering sky and the drumming of hooves. This is a tale of the land of Aeren, the town of Namen, the people who ruled it, and the quiet folks who lived on a field some miles out of town. Let us begin.
Namen was not a place that lords often visited. It was a quiet town, far away from any borders or major roads. In fact, the only reason Namen could call itself a town was because it found itself near an old stone tower and an older lake. The tower was worth noting because it had once been the hall of a family who were now the rulers of Aeren, though none of their bloodline had returned in many lifetimes. The lake was worth noting because it provided a source of fish, a rarity in the area. People in Namen tended to give more thought to the lake than the tower.
Namen was also noteworthy for one other reason, though this one was far too new and far too quiet for people to think much about. A little ways away from the town of Namen lived a lonely old man and his daughter. The man was not particularly old, but he was not young, and had never argued with the name. His daughter was young, but people didn’t know enough about her to say much else. The man was quiet and came into town only when he needed to, and the daughter was wild and carefree and came even less, and they were worth noting because they raised the best horses anyone had ever seen. Horses were their life, and they bred them and raised them and trained them and sold them. The horses were famous across all of Aeren, and once a year the man would ride out with a band of new-trained horses, traveling to the halls of merchants and lords to sell, and return some months later looking much older and a little happier.
As has been said, Namen was not a place that lords often visited. The man would ride out with his horses, and would always find the proper customers, so there was no need for them to come riding out to a little town known for an empty old tower and a lake full of fish. Thus, it was a shock to all parties when a party of the greatest nobles in the realm came to see the Horsemaster. Among them rode the Duke of Veer, who was the brother of the King, as well as Lord Ungel, who by right ruled the town, and most impressively of all Prince Anyan, who was the third son of the King and was famous for his riding skills, though he was only 14. They had come for more than horses, saying they wanted to tour a little visited part of the realm and to repair the old tower so the royal family could teach their younglings to rule, but everyone knew the real reason was the horses. ‘The greatest in the realm, enough to draw the eye of royalty’ the townsfolk whispered once the lords rode past. They watched and they wondered, for nobody visited the home of the Horsemaster and he had not bent that rule for anyone in over two decades. But who can deny royalty?
It was over two months that the procession of lords waited before visiting, as they met with townsfolk and watched the fishing at the river and had their builders work to repair the old tower. But there was only so much delay they could muster, only so long they would wait before they rode out to see a weathered man about horses that ran like the wind. After two months, they came.
It was with a strained smile and a tired look that the Horsemaster bowed to the lords who had come seeking these rumored, legendary horses, ushering his daughter out into the field as he did. They looked around, amazed that such a renowned name lived in such a humble home. It had only three rooms, one central room, one for him, and one for his daughter. The Horsemaster’s only reply was an awkward laugh and a quick subject change. While the Horsemaster entertained the lords and discussed the horses, the young prince Anyan found himself wandering, utterly distracted by a mare running loose, hair as black as ink. Seeing the horse all but flying across the field, he laughed and gave chase. Any fool could tell that the prince would never be fast enough to catch any running horse, much less one as swift as this, but Prince Anyan was young and bold and chased for the joy of chasing, and the mare seemed content to keep the prince just out of reach.
On and on this went for hours, and ever the prince chased the mare, farther away and yet farther still, ‘till the sun began to sink and the shadows grew long and the prince found himself lost and alone on the grassy plain, the mare nowhere to be seen. Anyan turned, seeking the Horsemaster’s home or some other sign to find his way, but the plain was empty of any sign of home. Anyan cried out, near despair, lost and alone as night fell around him. He fell to his knees, crying out again, hoping against hope some searcher or passing wanderer might hear him and come to his aid, knowing that no one would. But to his shock, a fierce whinny and a girl’s cry of shock filled the air, and as he looked up he saw a girl on a dappled mare riding swiftly towards him.
Anyan rose then and cried out in joy as the rider drew to a stop beside him, looking up at the face of the Horsemaster’s daughter, all of 14 and riding bareback, a fierce look on her face and the wind in her hair. When Anyan thanked her for finding him, promising a reward fit for the proudest lord, she laughed and cried ‘What need have I of gold or jewels, when the horses I ride are the greatest treasures in all the world? What need do I have of lands and mansions, when I run free upon the plain and live beside it? What need have I of titles and honors, what use are they to the Horsemaster’s daughter who’s joy runs across the plains? Keep your gold and jewels, keep your lands and mansions, keep your titles and honors, and simply ride with me, if you must offer up some gift.’
The young prince nodded, though he had never met a person quite like the Horsemaster’s daughter, and she pulled him onto her horse and rode with him back to her home. The lords were overjoyed to see his return, and soon left with horses in hand. But the Horsemaster’s daughter he would always remember as a friend, and in the year and more they stayed as the tower was built and surveys held and fish enjoyed and country roamed, in every free moment they were together, riding across the plains with the wind in their hair and smiles on their faces. Even when the work was done and the great nobles moved away, each year Prince Anyan found some excuse to return, and spent all the time he could with the Horsemaster’s daughter.
This is how they grew up, the Prince and the Horsemaster’s daughter, the closest of friends. It was to her he ran when his father died, falling from the balcony one stormy night, never to see the sunrise. It was to him she went when the horse she had raised and rode and lived beside, the sister of her heart, fell defending her from a roving band of wolves. It was to her he ran when his brother, cold and proud and beautiful, raged and hated and hurt him and drove him from his home, and it was her, alone of all people in the realm, who turned that cruel and handsome prince from the gate and would not let him pass. It was to him she rode as fast as the wind the day her father, old and yet not old, weathered and tired all his days, quietly lay down and died, and he held her and told her that there was still life to live and a world to love. They were as close as friends could be, and they loved the wild plains and the running horse and the shifting sky and the flowing river, and they loved each other as only friends can.
For all that he was a Prince, and could have been a King, for all that she was the Horsemaster’s daughter, and became the Horsemaster herself, they were the closest of friends, for all of their days. It was for the life of the Horsemaster that he turned down the crown and lived beside the plain. It was for the joy of the Prince that she made sure to breed horses of the deepest black, fierce and wild. It was on the plains that they truly lived, and there they died, and we remember them in the drumming of hooves and the wind through the grass. For now the horses have run free, now the lake has gone dry, the tower has fallen down, Namen  has crumbled to the dust and Aeren is lost beyond the sea. And yet we remember those two friends, and their names live on, and the story endures.

Once again, videotape the smallest dimension. Inspect the squareness of the frame through evaluating the diagonals from corner to corner.
