Been meaning to post this forever, but I keep forgetting: I bought this little guy in Dortmund a couple of weeks ago. It's a plushie of my icon!
Well, yes, it's different colours, it's Captrain's lime and white instead of DB red that my icon (usually) is. Also, if we're being very precise here, this is clearly a Bombardier TRAXX, as can be seen from the five-pointed side windows, while my icon is modelled after a Siemens ES64F (or class 152) with rectangular side windows. But between you and me: You don't have to care about that, they do actually all look the same and it's fine to admit that. Anyway, this one is fun and nice and I wanted to show it off.

@tomorrowland @fansdotomorrowland @lineas_yourfreightforce @duffel2570 @nmbs.be @sncb.be #nmbs #sncb #lineas #tomorrowland #belgië #belgique #belgium #duffel #transport #treinen #trains #i11 #station #gare #spoorwegen #sporen #rails #railroads #spoorwegen #electrisch #electric #bombardier #traxx #feest #fete #party #festival

I've had a request for pictures! @naresar, this is for you. A very random collection of things I found interesting.
The Stadler RS Zero is a zero-emission rail car for branch lines. It's the successor to the successful Regio-Shuttle RS 1, but unlike that diesel train, it's zero emission (hence the name). You can order it with batteries (in which case it'll have a pantograph and run as an electric train on electrified lines) or with hydrogen. Not fuel cells, the hydrogen gets burned in a specially adapted normal motor. Despite that it remains very lightweight (18 tons per wheel set), and as a fun extra, it retains the slanted windows of the original, although now they're just decorative. The train here is a prototype, so far no sales have been made yet.
Also from Stadler, the British class 99 is the newest and best freight locomotive for the island. It is dual mode, able to reach 7000 kW in electric mode and 1600 kW in diesel mode. That's less than the class 66, the default freight diesel engine in the UK, that Stadler wants to replace, but space inside the locomotive is tight and the engine is genuinely as big as they could make it.
Talgo brought their Travca locomotive, a high speed multi-system international locomotive for Deutsche Bahn. 230 km/h top speed (143 mph) puts it into the "class 2" of high speed trains, intended for the edges of the network. They'll run with Talgo coaches that they brought out last time. This time they had a single Talgo coach of the same design for Denmark, oddly enough presented inside. Deutsche Bahn will call the Talgo locomotive + Talgo coach units "ICE", which adds yet another thing to the wide matrix of stuff that has been called ICE at one time or another. I need to write a post about that some time.
Will the Travca be Talgo's entry into central europe and Germany, or will it fail? Hard to say, as anybody who followed the Skoda class 102 saga knows.
Next to the Travca is an Alstom Traxx, and there's really nothing remarkable about it other than they're still making them. A decade ago, the TRAXX (then still built by Bombardier) was the king of the European railway networks, and also spelled in upper-case. But the newest version with the newest version of ETCS fell victim to Bombardier's classic software problems, so in the end, almost nobody bought it, a few that were bought have already been sold, and the factory has mostly sat empty. Alstom is spending a lot of money to fix and replace things to make the Traxx (now lower-case) a huge force in the market again. They do have the sales figures to match, but now they'll need to deliver.
For the Australians here, if there are any: Hyundai Rotem brought a car of the new Sydney long-distance fleet of very short double-deckers. Shipping it from Korea first to Berlin and then to Australia is quite a journey, but if they think it makes sense, who am I to disagree? This is literally the first time I've seen an Australian train in real life. It seems nice.
Egypt is building a new rail system almost from scratch to complement their existing one, and Siemens brought the high speed train for that. It's… a Velaro. It looks pretty much identical to the newest ICE trains (class 408), both inside and out, but Siemens spends a lot of time explaining that it's specifically optimised for desert environments, with aerodynamic tweaks to avoid sand buildup, vastly enhanced air conditioning, and even paint that's extra sand-resistant.
Not in itself that interesting, but related to the Talgo locomotive above: DB will also run the Talgo trains on some non-electrified lines, in particular up to Sylt. The Travca isn't designed for that, so DB bought some diesel locomotives for that part of the journey. Except there are no specific diesel locomotives anymore, so DB is getting dual-mode locomotives that can also run electrically (but at much lower speeds than the Travca). Eugen here is a Siemens demonstrator unit that got the DB logos and red stripe only for the exhibition, and based on pictures I've seen, only after it arrived here, so it's more a representation of the general idea.
There are always a lot of trams, and this time Hyundai Rotem brought something particularly unique: A hydrogen tram, powered by fuel cells!
I'm not sure why, though. I mean, of course the Hyundai engineers know far more about hydrogen trams than I do, but it's an odd choice. Hydrogen is expensive and inefficient and unproven. Wires, perhaps augmented with batteries in places, are cheap, efficient and have been in use successfully since 1889.
My Alma Mater was also there. The RWTH Aachen University presents the Aachen Rail Shuttle, a battery-powered rail bus that will run autonomously, eventually, to make it cheaper to reactivate branch lines. This could be interesting and useful, but we've had promises like that for at least a decade or two, and they'll have a lot of challenges to overcome. I wish them luck, but I'm not holding my breath.
Right, that should be way too much for now, I'll post more later. Feel free to ask questions about any of these!
Fuck. I love being at Innotrans, but I really hate how my feet hurt after twenty kilometres of walking all over this giant exhibition centre.
I may post some pictures of new trains if any of you are interested.
