Regal blue tang!
Tumblr media
As a species of surgeonfish, it has a hidden caudal spine on both sides of its body near its tail! These spines will point outwards when the fish feels stressed and are used to scare away predators.

Powder Blue Tang (Acanthurus leucosternon)
Family: Surgeonfish Family (Acanthuridae)
IUCN Conservation Status: Least Concern
Found exclusively in shallow coral reef habitats in coastal regions of the Indian Ocean, the Powder Blue Tang is a distinctively marked herbivorous fish that feeds on algae, using its elongated snout and narrow, sharp-tipped teeth to scrape it off of rocks, corals and other hard surfaces. In doing so, members of this species serve a vital function within reef ecosystems, cleaning algae off of coral and ensuring that it does not prevent sunlight from reaching the coral’s dinoflagellates (microscopic organisms that live in the coral’s tissues and produce nutrients through photosynthesis, sustaining both themselves and their coral hosts.) As algae is their sole food source, Powder Blue Tangs populations vary considerably depending on seasonal variations in algae abundance, and this drastically alters their behaviour and lifestyle; when food is abundant they are highly social (living and feeding in large schools) and travel freely around their home reef, but during periods of algae scarcity they become solitary, territorial and highly aggressive towards other members of their species, defending a small algae-supporting area by chasing or biting any other tangs that come near. When algae abundance allows for it gathering in schools provides members of this species with protection from larger predatory fish such as tuna, groupers and jacks, but when threatened lone individuals may still avoid predation by taking shelter within the reef, or attempt to defend themselves using a pair of sharp-tipped scales at the base of their tails (a characteristic seen in many members of the surgeonfish family, known colloquially as the fish’s “scalpel.”) Powder Blue Tangs breed when food is abundant (with females producing buoyant eggs that float to the surface and hatch within around 24 hours of being externally fertilized by a male,) and unlike many members of the surgeonfish family in which juveniles have wildly different markings to adults members of this species have fairly consistent markings throughout their entire lives (although it has been noted that their blue bodies may become paler as a result of illness or stress.)

Day 20 of Fishuary! I was uh. Busy
Prompt: Indian Ocean
If I hear one more person call a powder blue tang ‘Dory’ I’m gonna cry. Acanthurus leucosternon, not to be confused with the palette surgeonfish, may share many physical similarities, though they are not the same! For starters, the shade of blue is not the same, they have white colouration on their underside (contributing to their scientific name), and I’m going to get way too into describing colours if I don’t stop now.
These guys are pretty common aquarium fish, and I can see why. They’re very beautiful!

The powder blue tang, also known as the powder blue surgeonfish which is native to the warm tropical waters of the Indian Ocean. Here they live in and around coral reefs where they are diurnal omnivores which feed upon algae, sea grass, and tiny invertebrates. In cases where food is plentiful, it may feed in shoals, but in cases of scarcity, it may compete individually for food living a mostly solitary existence. Powder Blue Tangs are themselves occasionally preyed upon by sea snakes, diving birds, octopi, sharks, eels, groupers, and other large predator boney fish. Averaging around 9 inches in length and a pound in weight, the powder blue tang has an oval shaped body which is compressed laterally. Like other surgeonfishes, it swims with its pectoral fins. The caudal fin has a crescent shape. The fish has a "surgeon's scalpel," an erected part of the spine located at the base of the tail which it uses in self defense. The mouth is small and pointed in a beak-like manner with tiny and sharp teeth for reaching narrow spaces of food. Its sides are blue; its dorsal fin and the base of caudal fin are yellow; the head is black; and the mouth, the throat area, the anal and pelvic fins are white. The pectoral fins are transparent with yellow reflections. The intensity of its blue color can indicate whether the fish is healthy or not. These fish reproduce by egg scattering, gathering together in groups above the reef where each female will release up to 40,000 eggs which the males swim through and fertilize. Under ideal conditions a powder blue tang may live upwards of 10 years.

Blue Betta Fish and Surgeonfish relationship between them and the cult can be resumed like this!
Two birds on a wire
One tries to fly away
And the other watches him close from that wire
They says they wants to as well
But they are a liar
...
Two birds on a wire
One says, "C'mon" and the other says, "I'm tired"
The sky is overcast and I'm sorry
One more or one less
Nobody's worried

THE JELLYFISH AND THE PIRANHA ♡ MIYA ATSUMU
miya atsumu x gn!reader
"two orders of drinkable ice cream for miya atsumu and @qichun please!"
ingredients? knowing how much you love sea creatures, atsumu decides to take you to an aquarium for your first date.
what's it? fluff in the beginning and a hint of crack/humor by the end
allergen warnings? n/a
sugar level? 0.7k
regulars? @tokyometronetwork @tahonet
parlor's note? i adore sea creatures and i already had an idea like this on my notes so i really enjoyed writing this -- researching was also very enjoyable.
bon appetit!
Tumblr media
atsumu was the one to suggest going to the famous osaka aquarium kaiyukan for your first date. as the black jackals' manager, the two of you have spent so much time together so the setter was well aware of how much you loved animals, sea creatures especially. "it's supposed 'ta be visually stunnin'" he said, when he asked you out, but right now as you stood in front of the tank of various colorful tropical fish, his eyes were elsewhere; the so-called visually stunning sight not at all in his line of sight. instead, his large brown orbs were focused on nothing but you.
he admired the way the blue hue of the water reflected on your face. your face was already glowing with happiness, a rare kind of sparkle in your eye that's only brought on by genuine happiness and the shades of azul lighting hightlighted your features making you look like flawless in atsumu's eyes.
he swore, he felt his heart stop when you turned to look at him with the sweetest smile on your face, "'tsumu! look, it's dory!" you beamed at him, pointing at the familiar looking fish, a school of palette surgeonfish also known as the blue regal tang, or dory as you so affectionately called it swam right in front of you in the great barrier reef tank of the aquarium.
"you" you look like you should be a model "you're such a child." he grumbled thankfully - he knew you would never let him live it down if he told you that on the first date - being able to catch himself mid sentence. "'course ya would say that the blue tangs are dory." he rolled his eyes.
you laughed at his reaction and shook your head. "oh please, you can't convince me that wasn't your first thought too."
you held his hand in yours and pulled him to the next fish tank.
it was then that atsumu thought taking you to an aquarium for your first date was fate and a genius decision on his part for more ways than one: firstly, going to this aquarium was on his bucketlist, supposedly one of the best attractions osaka offered so he killed two birds with one stone - and even better, he was able to share this moment with you - secondly, you were absolutely enamored with marine animals so this couldn't be considered a lazy date on his part - and although there was nothing wrong about some lazy dates, that was not how miya atsumu rolled. he was there to be the best, to be a one of kind, and undoubtedly the best you could ever have, and thirdly - the one he was the most thankful for - you cannot see him blush while you held his hand because of how dark it was.
according to the signage by the tank, this one is the ecuador rain forest tank. atsumu laughed at some of the fishes swimming about making you smack his arm lightly -- some people were starting to stare.
"that one's you." he said, pointing to the red piranha floating above a log-like decor, then paced steps ahead into the jellyfish tank. "and this one's obviously me." he pointed to a bolinopsis mikado.
you shot him a glare as he walked back over to where you stood. "you're so rude, miya. this is why our pr team prefers bokuto-san over you." you crossed your arms then went back to gazing at the fishes.
"aw, c'mon," he chuckled, wrapping his arms around your figure from behind and propping his chin on the top of your head. "ya should be flattered a gorgeous, mystical jellyfish like me hangs out with a piranha like you."
you narrow your eyes and immediately shrug away from his hold, making him stumble forward and pout at you.
"you know, miya, i usually kiss on the first date, but i think i'm gonna make an exception for you." there's no bite to your bark, only a light-hearted teasing, but atsumu trails behind you whining all the same.

day 4 of misusing the fish-uary 2024 prompts and I forgot to take a pic of the inks before I colored it again, whoops
now, today's prompt was surgeonfish.
if you search surgeonfish on Google, Marla's picture comes up.
not literally, obviously, but since I tend to use wikimedia commons pictures as my starting reference images the blue tang photo I used as a quick reference when I designed her does.
now I love drawing Marla, but that was not the point of this exercise, so I chose a razor sawtail instead.
unfortunately I also have a nearly standardized way to handle surgeonfish at this point so the fun part turned into figuring out his color scheme XD
translating surgeonfish into Zora is the main reason some of my Zora have long faces like this fellow and Marla do; how else was I supposed to capture that distinctive beaky face? After that it just turned into a regional thing for CoRA's Aurule. XD

Note
I love blue tangs, or more accurately, surgeonfish, because they have that can cut skin to where it bleeds, meaning that Dory could have held her own against those sharks, using the smell of blood against them by cutting one of the sharks and getting them to turn on each other, but she didn’t because she’s a nice girl who wouldn’t fathom hurting people on purpose.
(ooh new fish facts! thank you!)
the best girl!!
