What if their was a Blood Duel between Lucien and Azriel? You know what I could see happening?
Elain becoming disgusted by Azriel (since he'd be the one to call it) and ending up standing between Azriel and Lucien.
I could even see her saying to Azriel:
"If you hurt him, you are hurting me" & reiterating she's not a person to be fought over as she walks away with Lucien by her side.
Because we all know Elain doesn't like violence and Azriel would just be showing how little he truly cares and knows about Elain by trying to enact the Blood Duel to "win" her like she's some prize.

This is just my opinion. I think if a blood duel does happen. I would want to see Elain fight in it defending her choice to be with Azriel. That would be a great moment for her character and still stand true to who she is as a character.

Theory/rant about day court, autumn court, sjm exploring rejected mates, Helion+LoAC, possibility of blood duel (a little elucien?)
I think atp we all kinda know that Helion and LoAC (Lady of Autumn Court) are mates/rejected mates. We also got hints that sjm might explore how rejected mates and blood duels work in future books. This is just a theory about the future book/s that make sense to me:
Helion and LoAC are rejected mates. We'll get more insight on Helion and LoAC's past relationship, LoAC rejecting the mating bond with Helion for the sake of her children and the effect of rejection on both of them.
Beron is working against Prythian and Helion takes it upon himself to challenge him to a blood duel for LoAC and Prythian, so we get stuff on blood duel. Beron ends up k!lling him and winning the duel, and the Day Court power goes to Lucien. That's when Lucien finally discovers his true heritage.
Now, Beron's elimination could happen in three ways:
LoAC finally rebels against him and k!lls him
LoAC rebels against him, Beron tries to k!ll her, but Eris takes the opportunity to end him once and for all.
Lucien k!lls him right on the spot of the blood duel out of rage of Helion's death.
Ultimately, Autumn court power goes to Eris and he becomes HL while Lucien has to take over Day Court. Elain joins Lucien to help him out at DC as everything happened rapidly, that way she can stay close to her sisters and be with lucien, so we get elucien too :)

Seeing a lot of discourse about Azriel v Lucien in a blood duel and who would destroy whose ass. (Not sexually unfortunately)
I’m lowkey torn … but leaning toward Azriel (?) Who do you guys think would win if the blood duel hypothetically did happen?

For your prompts post, I wanted to request something with Eris preparing for or fighting in a blood duel! I'm biased towards neris or azris for the pairing, but whatever direction you felt like taking it in would also be perfect :)
SORRY THIS IS SO LATE I got distracted by monster fucking fics. ANYWAY Eris is prepping for a blood duel. Normally I agonize over shit for days (and rewrite it a million times) so this is a new posting record for me. Also I somehow didn't break my 500 word rule. Enjoy!!
This is technically on A03 too but it's short enough to read here.
The duel was to begin shortly after dawn. Eris waited in his chambers as several servants scurried around, strapping the outer layers of his armor onto him. Today, they were as silent as they were meticulous, anxious about the battle to come.
The week prior Eris had issued a challenge to Cassian: a blood duel for his mate. It was unconventional, and Beron wasn’t pleased, but the promise of a daughter-in-law gifted by the cauldron was enough to ease his father’s skepticism. Rhysand, of course, was infuriated, ending their fragile alliance. But it didn’t matter, not when Nesta Archeron would become his wife, his partner.
“Sir, the emissary from Night is here,” a servant said, interrupting his thoughts.
“Well, bring him in,” Eris replied. He waved the servants away, leaving him to finish preparing for the fight ahead. From the mirror’s reflection, Eris observed Lucien’s worried expression as he entered the room.
His youngest brother was dressed in a tailored navy vest buttoned over one of those flowy shirts he had worn ever since he lived in the spring court. Still, the outfit was distinctly from Night, with little stars embroidered on the shoulders mimicking a midnight sky.
“Asking me to reconsider?” Eris drawled.
“You know this won’t end well.” Lucien only said. He watched Eris’s face in the mirror. The older male betrayed no emotion.
“I thought after Tamlin you’d stop licking the boots of a high lord.”
Lucien scoffed. “That’s not what this is about.”
Eris turned around to meet his brother head on. Petty warnings would do nothing to deter him.
“So Rhysand is actually worried I’ll win against his general. Interesting.” Eris gave a wicked grin. “Unless you’re here to tell me Nesta is having second thoughts.”
Lucien shook his head, his brows furrowed as he reviewed the situation repeatedly in his mind. Lucien’s approach to diplomacy was thorough and relentless, always searching for a secret solution or loophole. “You could have chosen any other method. You’re not even her mate.”
“It seemed appropriate,” Eris said.
He would never admit that the blood duel was merely for Nesta’s benefit. Both to relieve her from the burden of choice (for Rhysand would blame for choosing anything other than Cassian), but also because whether or not she liked to admit it, Nesta seemed the type to like these gestures. And cruel as he may be, Eris had a soft spot for that. He understood wanting to be chosen. He’d choose her again and again. Blood duel or not.
Lucien shook his head as Eris brushed past him.
“I hope this is worth it to you,” he said.
“She is.”

I also find it interesting how sjm brought up the rejected mates idea in acowar which is the same book we learn about loa+helion. Sarah always has patterns to how she writes mates and foreshadowing to those mates. She includes this in the same book to tell the readers the rejected mates is them, not Elucien as many want.
Yes, great point! The context reaffirms this is alluding to LoA and Helion (imo). This teaches us how rejected mates might “return to challenge the male she chooses for herself”. How in other territories, males believe their mated female belongs to them.
This does not at all fit the Lucien we know. However, it does fit the Beron we know. Beron’s abuse and misogyny are canon.
Later we also learn about the Blood Duel. Whose tradition is that? The Autumn Court’s. Everything Rhysand is describing here sounds exactly like what we learn about the Blood Duel.
Beron enacting the Blood Duel over LoA is completely on brand for him. She would of course fear this out of worry for her children and out of worry for Helion.
Tumblr media
We don’t get many details about the Blood Duel. Is it enacted just by a mated male? With Beron’s possessiveness and misogyny, LoA “belonging” to him mate or not still stands.
We also learn Az thought about enacting it for Mor which means that the Blood Duel can potentially be enacted by the other male as well.

Autumn’s Blood duel 🩸🍁🗡️
————————————
Been thinking a lot about the Autumn court’s blood duel. I remember it being rare to call for one . I want it brutal, scary, ritualistic and very unique to the court.
Red painting the duel chamber. Vines and leaves red from the blood spilled. Sprouting red flowers. Beautiful and terrifying.

Let’s face it: if Az and Elain were mates, Az wouldn't have hesitated to eliminate any threats. Elain would not only have to deal with her transformation but also with the fact that her fiancé would be dead by Az's hands.
We've seen Az's ruthlessness firsthand, like when he attacked Eris over a comment on Mor's attire and when he eliminated everyone around Gwyn. Even after 500 years, he still wants to invoke a blood duel against Eris and would see it as a good riddance if Lucien were to eliminate Graysen.
On the other hand, Lucien controls his anger when Graysen is brought up and doesn't react to provocation, relying more on words than actions.
Gwyn represents a fresh start for Az, someone without romantic entanglements and whose first time was taken from her. Az needs someone who doesn't know his history with Mor, just as much as Gwyn needs someone she feels safe around.
It’s not coincidental that Gwyn's first impression of Azriel was him at his worst, and she admires it, grateful for his actions, unlike something she would learn later and have to accept. Gwyn's fascination with violence hints at her compatibility with Azriel.
SJM prioritizes authenticity in relationships, valuing the ability of a couple to be genuine and true to themselves around each other over mere aesthetic appeal.
