the house i grew up in was a little bit of a fixer upper. for the first 19 years, my dad just sort of slowly fixed it, but pretty early on in college, he came into a large amount of cash and decided to just do the whole thing at once. so he rented a different house for like, 2 months that was just a block down from us, and then got a bunch of contractors to fix original house ASAP. it was kind of crazy, but it compressed many years of work into like, three months.
the sitting in a new house for three months was actually pretty fun. and i shouldnt really complain at all (staying at home while in college is a sweet deal)
but.
but. my parents are fairly hard of hearing, and their bedroom in the old house was in the furthest possible annex from everyone else. wheras in the rental it was just in the middle of the house. so without going into details, i was extremely aware that my parents were having sex like, eight times a day. my dad had just retired and i guess they were celebrating, which is great i guess, having parents that really like each other is way better than the alternative, but also, it did make me envy their deafness. i kept headphones on for so long that year i got literal ear calluses.
at the same time, the house my buddy from the shoe incident grew up in flooded. turbo flooded. they burst like, two pipes at once and the damage was so severe they had to redo all the flooring and all the drywall. his family actually had homeowners insurance, which is either incredible or suspicious for a family that used the drained pool in their backyard to store rusty scrap metal. so insurance was handling the work, but in the meantime, they were crammed into a very small hotel room space. we did the math on it then, it averaged about 80 square feet a person.
so one day i got home, and i was chilling, and then six rolled around, and apparently six o'clock was sex o'clock because my parents decided to flex their cardio. i grabbed my headphones and prayed that god would do for me what he did for beethoven, but that failed to work, and then seven rolled around and my parents were still at it, which again, very impressive, but was pushing me to swap out judas for mozart in those prayers. there's a definitive point where you stop praying to be deaf and instead pray that god could take you to a nice field and pop you like a gore-balloon.
i was about five minutes away from that point when my friend called me and basically said i have been stuck in a 500 square foot space with 6 people and i didn't have many marbles to start but what few i had are gone. please. if we are friends, if we were ever friends, take me out of here just for a moment.
and i was still pretty mad at him, but i had pity on the poor guy. also helped that i was desperate to leave the house. so i drove the chickenshitmobile to the hotel and i picked him up, and then we did our normal hangout activity, which was go to food city and buy produce. his normal house was, on a good day, nasty, and his backyard was, as i stated before, mostly used to store mosquito larvae and rusty metal, so what we'd always done before was just walk to the grocery store a half block away and leer at vegetables.
so we did that and it was like old times again. they had some radishes that were expired, so i could buy like, literally an entire grocery bag of them for about $5. so i did. i really like radishes. he got a coconut because he liked fruit and beating things with hammers.
which probably would've been great except we didn't have a hammer, so instead we spent about 30 minutes stomping itike it owed us money. when it finally cracked we cheered like we just got the winning touchball at the superdome and then he ate some of the flesh, and i ate some of the radishes, and we admired the black, starless sky of the city before i took him back to his hotel room.
and then we got pulled over.
i forgot to turn my lights on because the street all around the food city was ludicrously well lit. so it went from being pretty bright, to pretty bright and flashy, then i pulled into a parking lot and a cop came to ask us for IDs which is where everything went to shit:
i’d forgotten my license at home.
the cop was was actually kind of chill about it - he said he could get by with just an address. except i did not know my address. i hadn't memorized the new one yet. so i told the cop, my house is getting remodeled, i don't know my address right now. and then he went to my friend, and my friend said the exact same thing. house getting remodeled, staying somewhere else, no address, sowwwwwwy.
now the cop genuinely didn't know what to do. he went back to his car, and i was stressed that i was about to get into HUGE trouble so i started eating the radishes and my buddy started eating more of his coconut, and we actually managed to eat like a quarter of both before the cop came back. we ate enough produce that he could smell something weird in the air, and he asked what the smell was, and i said radishes, and my buddy said coconut, and the cop said which, and then we produced a large bag of droopy radishes and an absolutely brutalized coconut, and the cop was just like
so my buddy tried explaining how he was sharing a 500 square foot apartment with 6 people and wanted a fruit he could fight with power tools, and i tried explaining how i'd actually tried buying my parents like, board games and puzzles and stuff but nothing worked - the only thing my parents seemed to like doing right now was each other, and we both went on long enough and pathetically enough that the cop eventually went:
ok. stop.
and we stopped.
and he said do you know why i pulled you over?
and i said, because of my headlights, and my friend (who is hispanic) and the cop both looked at me like like i was the dumbest person in the entire world. and then the cop said no. that's why i'm allowed to pull you over. i checked your car because this neighborhood has a terrible sex trafficking problem, and i pull over every car i can to make sure no one is buying or selling sex. and you two are obviously doing neither. now i could give you, like, four tickets right now, but that would do nothing to make this area safer, so just turn your lights on, go home, drive safe, and try to be less stupid in the future.
and i said okay but i was thinking, you know, damn, this is just how i live man, i don't have a hidden third gear i can shift into. people can't just get smarter because it would be convenient. it's always convenient to be smart. i am literally trying my best.
but i didn't say anything because i was, slowly, learning how to filter what i said. instead i nodded and the cop left then i dropped my buddy off, and the last thing he said was said he owed me for responding to his SOS. I said he owed me for a lot of things, and he agreed that was true. then i drove home with my lights on, 5 under the speed limit, and arrived to a peaceful quiet home. I could’ve wept with relief but instead I went to bed.
the relief was short lived. i was woken up at 6 am by my parents. i swore, and then i prayed, and when i did not explode, i swore again. then i got up to make breakfast before my first class.
#babylon-lore#anecdotes#funny stories#the second dumbest traffic stop of my life#the first happened on a date with my wife#and it's a pretty good story#i#ll get around to that one eventually#like its not shoe story good but it's a funny little incident

for funsies i found the email they sent us.
"take this opportunity to remove any old food, cooking items or personal items from the worktops" when we still have over a week left on our tenancy and no prior warning as to when the cleaners would arrive?
"will not be... bagging & binning any items from your fridge/freezer or cupboards" YEAH I HOPE THE FUCK NOT???
also the idea that they could meaningfully clean the fridge/freezer when five people still live here is so weird to me?? the oven and microwave, sure, but the fridge??
ok so my building offers year-long contracts - mine is 9th Sep - 24th Aug, which is perfect considering my degree was from 11th Sep - 9th Aug. however, for the past couple of weeks the building has started to turn over for the next group of residents, doing maintenance, deep cleaning, painting etc. which is understandable but like. we still live here??? and it is quite unpleasant tbh. like not being able to use our kitchen for a day because it's being deep cleaned, even though we still have more than a week of residency here...... like i understand they have to do this stuff, but if there's no time for them to do it while the flats are unoccupied then maybe they shouldn't offer year-long contracts?
idk i'm sorry i just resent not being able to use the kitchen i'm literally still paying for, having random strangers constantly in our living space, all without a word from the building staff (they told us kitchens would be deep cleaned "sometime in the next couple of weeks", which doesn't exactly give us time to plan meals).... ik this is coming across v 'first world problems' but like. it just pisses me off ok, i feel very rushed out of the door
#on top of this btw our kitchen sink drains have been blocked for weeks and the building has not sent a contractor to fix it yet#despite us asking them multiple times#and yes they are charging us for that!! so the sinks are almost unusable so how clean are they going to be able to get the kitchen really#i'll shut up about this now but like. i cannot wait to be out of hereeee#even if it does mean moving back in with my parents 🥴

Or perhaps you won’t.
You’re seething, teeth clenched and hands flailing as you express your resolute displeasure.
“I don’t need a fucking babysitter, Simon! I’m old enough to shop alone!”
The tone of your voice borders on shrill, pitch rising with your temper. Fury rolls off of you in waves, incensed by the notion that you’d need one of his men following you around. Simon pinches the bridge of his nose between his thumb and middle finger, taking a measured breath as he contemplates what information you need to placate you. Perhaps he should’ve laid out the simpler rules first…
“Not a babysitter,” he grumbles, scrubbing that same hand across his jaw. “They’ll only be there to keep you safe.”
“From what? A fucking can of soup, Simon? New shoes? Rogue cart in a parking lot? Or, god forbid, a cashier that might ask how my day is going?”
“That’s not it - “
“Then what is it? Am I some sort of prisoner now? Scared I’m going catch a flight home and you’ll have to settle your debts like a grown man? Or is it just improper to have a lady in public without supervision? What fucking century are you living in?” You’re venomous in mocking him, fangs dripping with no intent of mercy, coiled up and ready to strike as soon as you find a soft spot. He’d like to say he understands, but you really have no reason to bite the hand that feeds. You don’t appreciate the gravity of the situation.
Simon utters your name softly, trying to pull you from your diatribe long enough to listen to reason. You’re not having it.
“I’m a person, Simon. I’m not your fucking property. I don’t need to be stalked by some half-wit thug with a God complex just because you are insecure. Believe it or not, I’m perfectly capable of looking after myself. You can’t - “
“Just listen - “
“What’s next? Lo-jacking my phone? Hiding a tracker in my purse lining? Chipping me like a fucking dog?”
“Enough!” he snarls, curt and cold. He can feel his heartbeat in his ears, pounding like a drum. His fingers curl into his palms, fists clenching. Your eyes go wide at his thunderous bark, but your face doesn’t betray your surprise otherwise. “My job is… dangerous sometimes, alright? Enemies come easy, and a lot of ‘em. Rules are in place to keep you safe, and you will follow them. Don’t like it? I don’t fuckin’ care. This ain’t a game, love. Your life is not a fuckin’ game.”
“What do you mean, ‘dangerous’?”
He stays quiet.
“Simon, tell me.”
He doesn’t respond.
“Simon?” You’re almost pleading at this point, anger all but draining. In fact, there’s an edge of fear when you say his name. He hates the sound.
Your beautiful doe eyes stare at him expectantly, and he folds like a lawn chair. Stubborn little thing, prodding like a needle until you get what you’re after. He’ll never confess how weak he is for that darling gaze.
Simon sighs, shoulders sagging from their tense, defensive position.
“I’m a black market contractor.” It’s a half-truth, a muted admission, but it’s better than handing you a live wire and throwing you in the deep end. You’ve had enough shocks in recent weeks; if he can save you from one more, he will.
“That’s how you know my father,” you say after a beat of silence. He nods.
“More or less.”
“Okay.” It’s followed by a heavy exhale that puffs out your lips and round cheeks. As inappropriate as the thought is in the moment, Simon can’t help but find it winsome. “Can you just, uhm, can you tell me the rest of the rules now, please?”
“‘course.”
He takes his time explaining as he guides you through your new home; the importance of setting the perimeter alarm while he’s away, the necessity of privatizing your social media accounts, a solid boundary of not having guests in the house without him vetting them first. You listen raptly, doll eyes staring up at him. Whether they’re full of engrossment or dread, he isn’t quite sure, but he enjoys your attention all the same.
You don’t ask many questions. Through the hallways, you generally acquiesce to his requests without resistance and ignore the closed doors. But one door seems to grab your attention at the end of the corridor, and when you ask about it, he knows he’s got you right where he wants you.
Simon pays attention, you see. Your socials gave away far too many of your interests and hobbies (don’t read into that - he only spent days digging back nearly a decade). He spent nearly a month cautiously cultivating the contents beyond the multitudes that were already in his possession, and he knows that room will be your favorite.
“That’s the library,” he comments casually, feigning no knowledge of the depth of your enthusiasm. Your face lights up, though you try to bury the delight behind your collected façade.
“Am I allowed in there?”
“Of course.”
You pause a moment before asking, “Are there any rooms I’m not allowed in?”
He shakes his head. There’s no need to disclose the armory to you, really; you’ll never need to use it. His gallery of weaponry and wares hides behind a covert veneer, a door that doesn’t appear as a door, something you’d never think twice of in cursory glances. And that door is behind a door that remains locked at all times inside Simon’s office. The thought does occur that it may behoove him to teach you how to defend yourself, but what are the odds anyone would ever get close enough? Near zero.
“Only thing I ask is that you knock ‘fore you come in the study. Prefer to keep my work separate from my personal life. Rest of the house is fair game; it’s yours now, too.”
Like a broken record, he keeps slipping that in wherever possible. Repetition breeds remembrance, and he’d hate for you to forget that you’re a Riley now…
♡
The staff gathers in the foyer shortly before breakfast.
Simon regards them all fondly. Each is a well-oiled cog in a seamless machine; some pieces newer than others, but all perfectly functional. He hates to reduce them from sum to parts, but they’re all instrumental in his operations. He couldn’t do what he does without them, especially not now that he’s married. You’ll learn their functions, fragments, and faces. You’ll come to love and trust them as deeply as he does.
Your soft footfalls pad down the stairs right on time. The hitch in your breathing indicates a yawn, and he can hear a nearly imperceptible swish of fabric as you cover your mouth to hide it. Step-by-step, he tracks your progress until you reach what should be the last stair. You stop. He glances over his shoulder and offers a muted smile, taking in the only mildly disheveled sight of you first thing in the morning - wet hair, sweatpants, and a faded t-shirt. You’re stunning… and a bit surprised by the number of people in your house.
“C’mere,” he says softly. It’s as much a command as a suggestion, but you’re likely to be a bit more receptive if he isn’t too pushy, right? See, he’s learning, bit-by-bit, how to communicate with you to his advantage. Manipulation tactics aren’t ideal, but if it gets you on his side sooner, so be it.
Finicky thing, aren’t you? Emotional. Reactive. You respond to him like a feral creature backed into a corner, all claws and quarrel. Lashing out, he understands. He’s seen that deer-in-the-headlights look a million times over - though usually, it’s right before he unloads a clip in some sleazy nobody’s head or right after he makes a near impossible shot on a corrupt high-powered target. It’s something entirely different to see that look on his wife. Something that sets his teeth on edge.
So, he’ll adapt. Even if that means one-sided psychological warfare until you’re willing to meet him in the middle.
“Good morning,” you greet, enthusiasm absent but polite nonetheless, as you approach his side. To the dismay of the gnawing ache in his bones to pull you close, you stay just out of arm's reach, folding yours across your chest.
His host of guests responds in kind, scattered smatterings of verbal responses and mere nods mixed together.
“Our staff,” Simon announces. “I’m sure you recognize them from the wedding, but that’s Johnny and Kyle.”
He points to each in kind, Johnny giving you a charming grin and Kyle tipping the brim of his ballcap.
“My babysitters, right?” you ask blankly with an edge of snark. Johnny snickers, but tries to mask his amusement as soon as Simon hits him with a sharp, warning glare.
He ignores your comment, though.
“Farah and Alex are in charge of housekeeping; they bring in a team twice weekly for thorough cleans. If you’d like them to not touch your room, please let them know. They’re good about that.” What he doesn’t say is that Farah is also his head of private security, ensuring all safety protocols are in place, and Alex is in charge of the armory. He keeps an accurate inventory of what comes in and out, makes sure everything is organized and in working order, spends the bulk of his time methodically cleaning the instruments Simon takes on each assignment until no trace is left.
“Roach runs the kitchen - ” Double duty - chef and personal trainer. Sanderson oversees Johnny and Kyle’s nutrition, workout regimen, and training drills to keep them in peak shape to keep up with their boss.
“- Nikolai is my driver - “ Primarily a pilot, really, but he’s a man of many talents. He’s saved Simon’s hide more than once in a pinch, trained as a medic with the Russian Army, and is, by all accounts, an absolute fucking Savant when it comes to mechanics. He’s a force to be reckoned, akin to a hurricane when prompted.
“- Yuri handles landscaping - ” And assists Farah with external security. He does routine perimeter checks and looks for flaws in the system. When he’s not lurking about outside, he’s assisting Nikolai with transportation repairs or in the armory with Alex. Jack of all trades, in a sense; always willing to lend a hand. He’s even volunteered to act as your personal chauffeur when Nikolai is away. How chivalrous.
“- and I’ve picked you up a new mobile for emergencies.” He holds out a new phone for you, knowing the old one was conveniently left inside his jet and was subsequently smashed beyond recognition. This one is identical in model to your previous in all ways but one - an invisible tracking app pre-installed by Kyle. You’ll find absolutely no indication of tampering, and he’ll be able to keep tabs on you from a distance.
You’re hesitant, but take it from his grasp.
“We’re still looking for your old one. Finish setting it up after brekkie, yeah?”
He’s met with silence and a wary glance. It’s almost like you know he’s lying - which he is, but only mostly. They’re still sweeping the floors for fragments of your screen.
“Right, off you fuck, the lot of ya,” Simon announces with a lopsided grin. “Breakfast is on the table - thanks, Roach - and we’ll join you in a sec.”
“Not sure how I feel about a guy called ‘Roach’ being in charge of the kitchen,” you reply automatically, clapping a horrified hand over your mouth as soon as you realize what you’ve said. Roach laughs, full and hearty, at that. You can only offer a bashful smile and an apologetic shrug, the embarrassment evident on your face.
“Nothing to worry about, ma’am. I wash my hands, promise.” You giggle at that. “And, if it helps, you can just call me Gary instead.”
You agree, testing the taste of his name with gratitude. Simon would love to hear you say his name with something other than contempt right now. He understands how complex this all is, but he’s your husband, for fuck’s sake. Doesn’t that buy him any wiggle room?
No. No, it doesn’t.
He has to remind himself that while he knows everything about you (that he could find online, that is), you don’t really know him. You don’t know the lengths to which he’d go for you, that he now lives for the happiness of the pretty little specter that haunts his dreams. Don’t worry, he’ll fix that soon.
♡
Blood drips into the water, cardinal beads leaching color as they slip into hazy translucency. Simon watches the streaks circle the drain as the faucet runs on low.
It was a local job, quick and dirty. Solicitor with a nasty penchant for underage girls and enough money to weasel his way out of the legal ramifications. Surveillance indicated his wife was out of town, but Simon didn’t bank on the other woman. The one that stabbed him.
She snuck up on him, striking right after he pulled the trigger. The tip of her blade sliced a neat strip across the side of his neck. Not deep enough to need stitches, but deep enough to piss him off. Her gray matter is splattered all over a nice painting in the solicitor’s flat.
However, a faint sense of guilt gnaws at his nerves. There are no qualms about his actions, no concerns about the successes of his work, but in doing so, he’s lied to you once more. The excuse of a late night meeting shaded the edges just enough to discolor the true intent. That’s what places the unscratchable itch in the back of his mind.
Coming home, freckled in red, river of rivulets pooling in the curve of his clavicle and dripping down his chest, he doesn’t want you to see that. All the care and caution that has gone into shielding you this one bitter truth would be all for naught if you caught him. Hell, Johnny had to find a way to sneak him back into the house just for Simon to clean up.
It’s late, though; you’re probably already asleep anyway, right?
He turns the faucet off, shaking the loose droplets from his hands before snatching the pair of butterfly bandages from the counter. Each layer peeled away feels like another stripped from Simon himself. Symbolic, almost, the way it mimics your being burrowing deeper into him. Beneath the skin, the fat, the fascia, the muscle; weaving through the fibrous tissue and veins until you’re settled in the deepest part of him. He closes the superficial wound with unflinching hands, but you… It’s far too late to keep you from getting inside.
Tossing his blood and sweat-laden clothing aside, he’s halfway into pulling on a fresh pair of sweats when he hears a tentative knock at his bedroom door. He grumbles something bordering on foul, an unheard warning that there better be a damn good reason for Johnny bugging him right now, but he’s colored a lively shade of surprised when he finds his wife awaiting instead.
“What are you doing up, lovie?” he asks softly, trying to decipher the timid look on your face. You look tired, but there’s a wild awareness in your eyes. They dart across his form, lingering briefly on the bandages before combing the bare planes of his broad chest. He swears he can feel the heat coming off your pretty face when you realize you’ve been caught staring, but no mind is paid as he awaits an answer.
After a beat, you speak - low and soft, hesitant, like you’re trying to tiptoe out loud.
“Can we talk?”
Simon nods, stepping back from the door frame to gesture you inside. The steps you take are calculated; you’re mindful of each separate footfall on the carpet. Trepidatious like a rabbit, ready to bolt at the first sign of a threat, but you won’t find one here. Not with him.
His focus narrows in on you, following so succinctly behind that he can feel the shift of your hips in his palms. A phantom of your perfume trails at your back, beckoning him along. Silly, but he swears he can feel the threads of your sweatshirt between his fingers. He blinks, attention shifting to the tear in the collar and the stain on the sleeve. He actually does know that material well; it used to be his, after all.
“S’that my shirt?”
The stretched sleeve cuffs are long enough to hide your hands, the hands that are wringing together.
“It was in my laundry,” you murmur. “I’m sorry, I can wash it again and - “
“No. It looks good on you, dove. Keep it.”
He makes a mental note to slip Alex a little extra for taking the initiative. Seeing you in something of his does something to him. Something vulgar and very ungentlemanly, something that tests his restraint, something not at all appropriate for this conversation. He’s subtle in the way he palms then adjusts himself.
Respect, Simon. Show her respect.
“What’s on your mind?”
You sigh, fingers fidgeting.
“I, uh, wanted to apologize. Again. I haven’t really been fair to you. This last month or so has been a lot to cope with, and I’ve just… God, Simon, I’ve been so angry. I don’t know how to deal with it, and it keeps boiling over. It’s never been my intention to take it out on you, and I feel awful that you’re really taking the brunt of it. You don’t deserve that. You’re just as much a victim in this as I am, and - “
“You don’t get it, do you?” His interruption is a bit harsh, he knows, but how many times does he have to say it? “I’m not a victim, love. I chose this. I chose you.”
He doesn’t want to lie to you anymore - can’t, won’t continue to hide things from you. You’ll never be able to truly want him the way he wants you if you don’t wholly know him. This way, you’ll have time to process. You’ll have all the time you need to come to terms with whatever you need to make peace with. It’s better this way, easier. You’d have found out eventually, right?
So, laying his cards on the table, he tells you everything. No stone left unturned, no facet unfaced. He watches your pretty face pale and twist in abject horror as he publishes each element in a bold font. By the time he’s done, no secrets remain.
Tears run down your cheeks as you try to catch your breath. The second he reaches out to comfort you, you’re gone.
part v - coming soon!

Man After Midnight Ch. 2
Rich Mans World Series | Chapter 1 | Donations | Thoughts & Feelings
[Sorry it took so long! Love you all! Let me know what you think!!]
Everything was weird when you woke up, Chris had been standing in your room, praying to god that you didn’t die, Sebastian was nowhere to be seen and you had a lot more injuries than just a gunshot wound. “So…all this because Sebastian caught us together and shot me?” you asked Chris as he sat beside you. “What?” he asked, confused. “Well, that's why I'm here right? When he shot me, you called 911 and got me to the hospital? Is he still angry? I didn’t mean to hurt him, I just….I’m so in love with you Chris…” you whispered, laying your hand on his on the bed.
Chris looked down at your hand and looked up at you. “Sweetheart…what are you talking about? Sweetie, Sebastian didn’t shoot you…our house blew up, you almost died,” he said gently kissing your knuckles as you looked confused. “So….I wasn’t dating Sebastian? I didn’t cheat on him with you? He didn’t catch us in bed and try to kill us, shooting me in the back?” you asked after explaining what you’d been talking about.
Chris stared at you, and smiled a sad small smile at you, lacing your fingers together. “No sweetheart, none of that happened.” he sighed. “We’d gotten into a fight and our house blew up. I have a feeling I know who did it, but my guys are working on it baby. I’ve also got a contractor ready to start the rebuild on the house, but I…wanted your input on the rebuild.” he said softly.
You were about to say something when a soft knock sounded on your door, you both looked over to see Seb standing there with flowers. Chris stood up, blocking him from seeing you. “I had heard she was awake, I wanted to see how she was feeling.” he told Chris trying to look around him. “She’s fine. Leave. Now.” Chris wasn’t about to let you get upset, he wasn’t risking anything with you anymore. “Chris…” you spoke quietly. “It’s alright…” you watched as Sebastian walked closer to the bed, but Chris leaned in and whispered in his ear. Sebastian's face drained of all color and when Chris pulled back, he clapped him on the shoulder and turned to you with a smile on his face. “He can’t stay long though, okay baby?” you nodded and looked at Sebastian with a strained smile. “Thank you for the flowers, you can put them on my table, I’ll have a nurse get some water for them.” You said as he nodded and laid them down. “I'm glad you’re awake, Chris fill you in on what all happened?” Sebastian eyed Chris who glared back at him, nostrils flared and his jaw ticking. “Yeah, said the house blew up, pretty scary huh?” you grabbed Chris’s hand who bent down and kissed your knuckles. “Doctors said she’s going to make a full recovery,”
Sebastian looked at Chris again before he looked at you and nodded with a soft smile. “I’m just so glad you’re okay, and that you're gonna make a full recovery.” he bent down and kissed your forehead. Chris was about to lose his cool until Sebastian spoke up again. “Y/N…I have some business I need to take care of out of State…So it might be a while before we see each other again okay?” he said with a small smile. You looked up at him, confusion on your face. “What do you mean business? Like….our kind of business?” you asked as Chris stepped up to your other side, caressing your hand gently, “Personal business sweetheart, I'm sure he’ll come back when he can.” Chris said, looking at Sebastian. “Isn’t that right?” he asked, unknown to you, there was a look shared between the two of them. “Yes, as soon as I can, I’ll be back,” he said.
There was a silence that fell over the room, before Chris cleared his throat. “Well, you should probably head out, she needs her rest. I’ll walk you out.” he smiled as Seb nodded and grabbed your hand. “Take care Y/N, I’ll be in touch real soon okay?” he smiled as you smiled up at him, nodding, “Stay safe Sebastian, We’ll miss you,” you said as you squeezed Chris’s hand. Sebastian held back his chuckle and nodded. “I’ll miss you too,”
Chris dimmed the lights and walked out with him, “I meant what I said. You ever come back around her again, and I'll kill you.” he said as he hugged Sebastian. “You leave town and never come back here. If you were anyone else I would have slit your throat already, but you were like a brother to me, so, I'm giving you one final chance. You stay away from her and me. If you ever even think about her again I’ll kill you.” he snapped at him before turning and walking away from Sebastian for the last time.
You laid your head back and closed your eyes, you had a bit of a headache and knew that it would be a while before you’d be allowed to leave the hospital. Still much of what happened, you couldn’t remember. You remembered that Chris had come home from the club but after that it was mostly a blur. You looked up at Chris as he came back into the room. He looked tired but overall he seemed okay. “How long have I been out for?” you asked as he took his place next to you again. “About 3 months. I was starting to worry, you know,” he smiled, kissing your hand again.
You looked at him and caressed the back of his hand with your thumb. “I remember what I did at the club that night, I’m so sorry Chris, I didn’t mean to hurt you. I just…I was so angry seeing you with, yet again, another woman. It makes me feel like I am not enough for you. Like I’m just some ugly, boring, bitch you had to marry and all these other women are who you truly want to be with. I love you, I love you for who you are. Yes, we have our faults, yes we need to work on our marriage-,” “Y/N-” “No. It’s my turn to talk now.” you said sternly. “I love you Christopher, but I refuse to watch my husband be with other women.” you said, staring at him. “So….are you my husband, or do I need to do something you will regret?” you asked, looking him dead in the eye.
Chris stared at you, his mind and his heart was racing, he didn’t know what to say. “Y/N…I…I don’t love you….at least not yet.” he spoke softly. “I don’t know you well enough to say that to you. Yes, we need to work on our marriage, yes we need to get to know each other better. Yeah, I have my faults…I know this. I’m working on it. After the house blew up and we figured out what happened…I’ve been here, with you. I’ve slept here, showered here, I’ve pretty much lived here, because I refused to let you be here alone. Your parents have been keeping in touch, Your brothers and sisters came by to see you a couple of times, but other than that, you know, its been us here…so, I’ve been….texting a therapist. I found an app where I can do sessions without having to leave your side.” he ran a hand over his face. “Maybe we could look into marriage counseling? I know that's for people who…” he trailed off, searching for the right word, until your hand landed on his cheek. “That’s one of the best ideas you’ve ever had. That would work wonders for us. But in order for us to do that, and to build a strong foundation in our marriage, we need to have a united front. No. More. Women. When people see you out with other women, it makes our marriage look like a scam. You may not love me, but you have to respect me.” you said as he leaned into your hand a little.
Chris was terrified of committing to you; what if you changed your mind? What if you hated the idea of him once you knew him? Or what if you wanted to still get divorced even if he’d been faithful? What if you met someone else? So many questions filled his mind. “What if I’m not enough for you?” he whispered. “What if I'm not enough for you?” you fired the question right back with a softness he hadn’t witnessed alot. “I…I don’t think that’ll be a problem.” he kissed your palm before looking back up at you. “Me either. I'm willing to put forth the effort if you are.” you said quietly as he stood up and sat on the edge of your bed.
“When I was a kid, my dad would have affairs, my mom knew about it, and told me that’s just part of the life. The men did whatever they wanted, and as long as their wives had money to support them and the kids, it didn’t matter. The wives all turned the other way. Didn’t matter to them, so when I grew up, and made the agreement with your father to marry you instead of killing him for the money he owed me, I figured it would be the same way.” Chris said softly. “My dad was a real hard ass, he didn’t really want kids, but when my mom had me and my sister, she told him that she’d take care of us, and herself, all he had to do was support us. He did that.” Chris said, staring down at his hands. “Taught me the life, died when I was 14. Ma travels mostly now, staying with relatives all around the world.” he glanced at you, and the sight made his heart swell in his chest.
You had a sad look behind your eyes, your hands clasped together in your lap as well as they could be with the cast. “Chris…that’s terrible.” you whispered. “At least you’re wanted now, I know that doesnt make up for what your father did or how he made you feel.” you whispered and as best you could, moved over in the bed, patting it for him to come sit next to you.
Chris maneuvered around so he could sit with you, wrapping an arm around you, pulling you into his side. “My sister was out with my dad, they’d done this like father daughter date night thing/father daughter dance? I don’t remember the specifics of it all, but that was the night he died. They held my sister for a while…I now know what they’d done to her, but back then I had no idea. She killed herself when we were 18.” he said softly. “It was the Irish, wasn't it?” you whispered as you curled into his chest. “Yes, it was.” Chris answered back as he stared ahead of the two of you. “Tristan wanting to make a deal with me was a trap and I didn’t realize it until it was too late.” He kissed your forehead as gently as possible, pulling your blanket up over your arms as you wouldn’t get cold. “I know you’ve been out for 3 months, but you should probably rest.” he smiled down at you as your eyelids got heavy and you nodded snuggling closer to him. “Goodnight Chris, I love you,” you whispered. “Goodnight baby girl,” he said, holding you as your breathing slowed into a steady rhythm.

We've seen far more water on our land this past two years. Despite efforts and considerable expense, we've been unable to beat it. Now we know why.
This is a screenshot of the latest Google Earth image taken in July. Our so considerate neighbour, who (you may recall) chose to build a cabin between us & the forest, has deviated significantly from the approved plans.
Far from a small settlement pond, lined with an impermeable membrane, that should be connected to an existing drainage ditch, she's created a 300m2 lake containing a conservatively estimated 250,000 litres of water. There's no evidence of a membrane, and it's held back by a bund that was thrown up by dumping soil from the excavation on the downhill side.
That means the water, which includes allegedly treated grey water from her site, is percolating through the soil into the ground water course that runs directly down to us.
Our home is built on a site that was dug into the terrain, so we're surrounded by an embankment that's now beginning to slump. We're in the process of constructing new poultry pens on the highest part of our ground because their existing location is now underwater when it rains.
Not only that, but our drainage contractor discovered the source of the water that was washing out our drive. You guessed it. She had a field drain installed to drain the site before her build started. That pumps out water directly to another groundwater course that empties onto our land by the main gate. No wonder we had 6" thick ice there last winter.
Whilst I'm all in favour of sustainable farming, I won't support her activities when they render our land effectively unusable.
There's no relationship to damage after we had the audacity to object to her plans. She just submitted them to the authority without discussing them or giving us a chance to have any input. She even twisted the narrative to portray herself as the victim and posted that all over social media. Now she's moved in, we find her presence more & more intrusive. She runs farm tours right along our boundary several times a week. We've found our access track blocked by a coach whose surly driver almost came to blows with my son.
So now this goes back to the authorities with a detailed summary of how it doesn't comply with the approved plans, of the damage she's doing to our property, and to our mental and financial health. I don't care how much it costs to put right, nor whether it means she has to raise finance to do it. She either fixes it, or I'll sue her into the ground even if it means remortgaging to do it.
#sorry for the rant#this is breathtaking stupidity#and beyond inconsiderate#never trust a farmer#yes im mad#now i get even#shell regret the day she ever thought of building here

E. Schelling Contractor (Photo taken by Scott Fajack on March 27, 2023 at Valentine St. near Cerro Gordo St. in the Elysian Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA)
In 1909, Schelling was awarded the contract for improving "Manzanita St," including grading and graveling, cement curb, and cement gutter, vitrified block gutter; at the same time he was also awarded the contract for a portion of Cerro Gordo St. so that may be this sighting. In the same year, he submitted a bed for constructing Section 3 of South Los Angeles Main Sewer (Southwest Contractor and Manufacturer, Volume 3, Engineers and Architects Association of Southern California, 1909)!
In 1916, Schelling "abandoned the contract before full performance thereof" for the construction of a street improvement in Vancouver (The Pacific Reporter, Volume 154, West Publishing Company, 1916). How scandalous!
In the same year, he was noted as being in Burbank, CA, where he was awarded the contract for improving Glendale avenue in Glendale, between First street and Verdugo road (Contractor, Volume 23, McGraw Publishing Company, 1916).
By the following year, E. Schelling was located at 4316 South Figueroa street in the South Figueroa Corridor neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA. Almost all the info I found was in 1917, so get ready for a lot from Southwest Builder and Contractor, Volume 50 (F. W. Dodge Company, 1917).
He submitted bids to the Los Angeles "board of public works for grading and oiling Burns avenue between Virgil and Vermont avenues" including "grading to finished surface," ...cultivating, tamping, and oiling, ... Class A cement curb, ... cement walk, ... (and) concrete gutter;" "for constructing cement curbs and sidewalks on Echo Park avenue between Vestal avenue and Donaldson street;" "for the improvement of Effie street between Micheltorena street and Maltman avenue" including "rough grading, … finish grade and oil, … curb, …side walk, …concrete gutter, … (and) storm drain;" "for improving Myra street from santa Monica boulevard to Hoover street" including bitulithic paving including grading, rough grading to grade, finishing grading, oiling and rolling, cement curb, cement sidewalk, concrete gutter, storm drain, and remodeling sanitary sewer manhole; for "improving Bates avenue from Effie street to Sunset boulevard," including asphalt paving, rough grading, finishing grade and oil, curb, sidewalk, concrete gutter, brick gutter, and storm drain; "for grading and oiling Eagle street between Ezra street and Concord street" including rough grading, finish grade and oil, curb, sidewalk, and concrete gutter; "for rough grading and grading to finish grade at Lemoyne and Baxter streets;" "for grading and oiling and constructing cement curbs, sidewalks and gutters on Grafton street between Lucretia avenue and Lemoyne street;" "for grading an oiling and constructing cement curb, sidewalk and gutter and storm drain in Preston avenue between Husted street and Avalon street;" "for grading and oiling and constructing concrete pavement, cement curb, sidewalk and gutter in Twenty-fifth street between Nevin and Compton avenues." He pretty much seems to have done most of Echo Park!
He submitted a bid "for constructing a concrete retaining wall 1185 ft. long on south side of Brooklyn avenue east of Evergreen avenue."
In 1918, Schelling was still on Figueroa and was awarded the "contract for grading and oiling Preston Ave." and "for the improvement of Myra St. between Santa Monica Blvd. and Hoover St.," which had been submitted in the year prior (Engineering and Contracting: Buildings, General Contracting, Structures and Civil Engineering, Volume 49, Myron C. Clark Publishing Company, 1918).
In October of 1920, Schelling had a $20k "paving and sidewalk contract in a new sub-division in the north part of Los Angeles near Eagle Rock." In November of 1920, Schelling was listed as being located in Venice and being "low bidder of improvements on the South Mountain Road near Santa Paula, Ventura County." Plus, Russel and Whitney noted that "Mr. Schelling has been very busy of late and is very anxious to start his new 30-B Bucyrus shovel which was recently shipped to him" (Russell, I.T. and C. W. Whitney. "Notes from the Pacific Coast," Excavating Contractor, Volumes 13-14, A.B. Morse Company, 1916). [Obviously Google Books is wrong here because the edition is from 1920, so the volume cannot be from 1916.]
The only E. Schelling I found in the Los Angeles area around this time who seems to have something to do with the contractor business is Eugene Schelling. According to the 1940 Census, Eugene was born in 1882 in Switzerland and lived at 920 S Fremont in Los Angeles, California. That is not currently an address. I am guessing it was taken out by the 110 freeway. He died in 1951 and is buried at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery in L.A. (Find a Grave). However, knowing all this, I was able to confirm that Eugene is our E. Schelling, as per the 1917 Los Angeles City Directory, Eugene Schilling or Schelling or Shilling was located at 4316 S. Figueroa and was a contractor (Los Angeles Directory Co., accessed via the Los Angeles Public Library's Historic City and Business & Phone Directories Collection).
This led me to find a bigger job that Eugene did with an Oscar Schelling. ("Road Construction with a Diesel Oil Dragline: California Contractor Handles a Fill Along the Pacific Coast with Remarkably Low Fuel Cost." Contractors and Engineers Monthly, Volume 6, pg. 73, Buttenheim-Dix Publishing Corporation, 1923). For a contract that H.H. Peterson had, Eugene and Oscar did the earth-moving work.
In the 1940 Census, Oscar Schelling, also born in Switzerland around 1877, lived at 427 Orange Grove in Glendale, CA with the Groshong family. He was a graduate of the "scientific course" at Los Angeles High School (Annual Report, Board of Education of the City of Los Angeles, 1897). In 1910, Oscar had a patent for a grapple (?) with A. A. Phillips ("Gas-Appliance Patents," The Natural Gas Journal, Volume 4, Periodicals Publishing Company, 1910). I don't yet know his relationship to Eugene but perhaps they were brothers?
Oscar was also in the construction business. He had a contract for a highway in Seal Beach, California, in which he used a 30-B Bucyrus dragline excavator driving with a Diesel oil engine as pictured here (pg. 122, April 1923, "Pacific Coast News," Excavating Engineer, Volumes 16-17, A.B. Morse Company, 1922). The day shift included Harvey Kramer as engineer and Arthur Schelling (also of unknown relation) as oiler; the night shift had Frank Mayes as engineer and Sam Viluda as oiler (Birkhead P.H., "Pacific Coast News," Excavating Engineer, Volumes 16-17, A.B. Morse Company, 1922).

Common Causes of Gutter Damage and the Importance of Gutter Contractors for Installation, Repair, and Replacement"
Maintaining a functional gutter system is essential for protecting your home from water damage. Gutter contractors in Chicago offer services such as gutter installation, repair, and replacement to keep your property safe. However, gutters can become damaged for several reasons. Understanding these causes can help homeowners take preventive action and seek timely repair services.
Common Causes of Gutter Damage :
Clogs and Debris Buildup Clogged gutters are one of the most common causes of gutter damage. Leaves, twigs, and debris can block the flow of water, leading to overflow. This can cause rust, leaks, and sagging. While regular cleaning helps, if your gutters are already damaged, professional gutter repair services can restore them to proper function.
Improper Installation If gutters are not installed correctly, they may fail to function as intended. Issues like improper slope angles or misaligned downspouts can prevent water from draining properly, causing pooling and eventual gutter damage. If you suspect installation issues, gutter contractors can assess your system and recommend gutter installation or repairs to ensure it works efficiently.
Severe Weather Conditions Chicago's extreme weather, including heavy rain, snow, and ice, can take a toll on gutters. Ice dams, which occur when water freezes in the gutters, can block drainage and lead to damage. Strong winds can also detach gutters, especially if they are already weakened. If severe weather has caused damage, gutter repair services or gutter replacement may be needed to restore your system.
Tree Damage Overhanging branches can puncture gutters or cause debris buildup, blocking water flow. This can lead to clogs and significant damage over time. Regular inspections by gutter contractors can help catch issues before they worsen and prevent damage from falling branches or accumulated leaves.
Age and Wear As gutters age, they can become corroded, cracked, or brittle, making them less effective at draining water. If your gutters are showing signs of age, gutter replacement is often the best solution. Gutter contractors can help you choose the right materials for your home and ensure a seamless installation.
Timely intervention by professional gutter contractors ensures that your gutters remain in good working condition, protecting your property from water damage. Whether you need gutter installation, gutter repair services, or gutter replacement, experts can provide solutions that prevent long-term damage to your home.
Why You Need Gutter Contractors ?
Gutter contractors are essential for professional gutter installation, repair, and replacement. They ensure gutters are properly aligned and functioning, preventing water damage to your property. With expert gutter repair services, they fix leaks and clogs, while gutter replacement offers long-term solutions. Hiring experienced contractors protects your roof and foundation.

10 Signs It's Time to Call an HVAC Contractor
An HVAC system keeps your home comfortable, no matter the season. But when it shows signs of trouble, it's best to call a professional. Here are 10 signs it may be time to reach out to an HVAC contractor:
1. Strange Noises from the System
If you hear unusual noises, like banging, hissing, or squealing, coming from your HVAC unit, it's a red flag. These sounds often mean a loose part or a more serious mechanical problem. An HVAC contractor can inspect the system to find and fix the cause of the noise.
2. Unusual Odors
A musty smell might mean mold in the system, while a burning odor could indicate faulty wiring. A professional should address any strange smell from your HVAC unit, as these issues can impact indoor air quality and safety.
3. Weak Airflow
If you notice that air isn't blowing strongly from your vents, your system may have a clogged filter, blocked ducts, or a failing compressor. Weak airflow makes it harder to keep your home comfortable and can strain the system.
4. Constantly Running System
When your HVAC system runs nonstop, it's a sign something isn't right. A properly working system should reach the set temperature and shut off. If it's constantly on, the system might be too small, have a broken thermostat, or struggle with another issue.
5. Temperature Fluctuations
If some rooms are warmer or colder than others, your HVAC system may need to be fixed. Uneven heating or cooling often points to ductwork issues or a failing unit. A professional can balance your system for consistent comfort.
6. High Energy Bills
A sudden increase in energy bills is often a sign of an inefficient HVAC system. When the unit struggles to heat or cool, it uses more energy. An HVAC contractor can check for issues like worn-out parts, low refrigerant levels, or outdated equipment that might be causing high bills.
7. Frequent Cycling On and Off
If your system turns on and off repeatedly, known as short cycling, it could be due to a dirty air filter, thermostat issues, or problems with the compressor. This puts unnecessary wear on your system and increases energy use, so it's a good idea to call a professional to fix it.
8. Moisture Around the Unit
Excess moisture or pooling water around your HVAC unit indicates a leak. It could be due to a blocked drain line or even a refrigerant leak, which can lead to health and performance issues. An HVAC contractor can find the source of the leak and make repairs.
9. Poor Indoor Air Quality
If you notice more dust, humidity, or increased allergy symptoms, your HVAC system may fail to filter and circulate air effectively. HVAC contractors can install filters, humidifiers, or cleaners to improve your home's air quality.
10. Age of the System
Most HVAC systems last about 10–15 years. If yours is nearing this age or older, it may be time to replace it. Aging systems often lose efficiency, require frequent repairs, and cost more in energy bills. An HVAC contractor can help you decide whether a new unit is time.
In Conclusion
Don't wait too long when your HVAC system shows any of these signs. Quick action can prevent minor issues from becoming expensive repairs. Regular maintenance by an HVAC contractor also helps to spot potential problems early, extending the life of your system and ensuring it works efficiently through all seasons. If you notice any of these signs, contact an HVAC contractor in Lake Elsinore. Professionals can diagnose and fix issues to keep your system running smoothly and ensure your home stays comfortable year-round.

How Commercial Roofing Contractors Prepare for Natural Disasters
Commercial roofing contractors play a crucial role in helping businesses weather the impact of natural disasters by implementing preventive measures, using durable materials, and offering emergency response services to minimize potential damage. Here’s how these professionals prepare for severe weather events and ensure that commercial buildings stay as safe and secure as possible:
Pre-Season Inspection and Maintenance Regular inspections are essential for identifying vulnerabilities before severe weather strikes. Contractors inspect for weak spots, loose materials, blocked drainage, and potential structural issues. They also assess roof flashings, seams, and any points where water could enter. Routine maintenance, like cleaning gutters and drains, replacing worn-out materials, and ensuring that all elements are securely fastened, can help prevent common issues like leaks, standing water, or wind uplift.
Using Impact-Resistant Materials For areas prone to high winds, hail, and hurricanes, contractors often recommend impact-resistant materials, such as modified bitumen, metal, and certain types of high-quality asphalt shingles. These materials are designed to withstand heavy rain, hail, and strong winds better than standard roofing options. Many contractors also choose materials with high wind ratings and durability certifications (like FM Global standards), which indicate a material’s ability to withstand specific environmental stresses.
Reinforcing Roof Structure and Fastening Systems Contractors reinforce the roof’s underlying structure to improve resilience against high winds and pressure changes. Installing additional supports, such as hurricane straps or wind-resistant fasteners, helps the roof stay intact during storms. They may also use stronger adhesives or mechanical fasteners to secure roofing materials more effectively. In some cases, contractors install secondary waterproof membranes to protect the interior in case of primary roofing layer damage.
Waterproofing and Sealing Vulnerable Areas Vulnerable areas like seams, flashing, and rooftop HVAC units are reinforced and sealed to prevent leaks and water intrusion. Advanced waterproofing solutions, such as elastomeric coatings, are commonly applied to flat commercial roofs to create an extra layer of protection against water damage. Contractors also ensure that any rooftop equipment is properly anchored, as loose HVAC units, antennas, or solar panels can easily detach and damage the roof during a storm.
Creating Drainage Solutions to Prevent Water Accumulation Poor drainage is a common problem for commercial buildings, especially flat roofs. To counter this, contractors design efficient drainage systems, such as internal drains, scuppers, and overflow systems, to move water away from the roof quickly and prevent standing water. Additionally, contractors may install tapered insulation or slight roof slopes to channel water toward drainage points, minimizing the risk of pooling and eventual leaks.
Preparing for Debris and Impact Protection Contractors anticipate the risk of flying debris and often recommend protective measures for the roof and any skylights or rooftop windows. Installing debris barriers, reinforcing skylights, and applying impact-resistant coverings help minimize potential damage. For roofs located near trees or in areas prone to high wind speeds, contractors may advise trimming nearby trees or adding shielding to the roof to protect against falling branches and debris.
Emergency Repair Plans and Rapid Response Services Commercial roofing contractors often work with clients to establish emergency repair plans that outline immediate steps for inspection and repair after a storm. Many offer rapid response services that prioritize emergency repairs to prevent further damage. These plans typically include pre-arranged access to roofing materials and tools to handle unexpected repairs, as well as contact lists for roofing specialists who can quickly assess and stabilize any damage.
Building Resilient Designs for Flood-Prone Areas In flood-prone locations, contractors may use specialized flood-resistant designs, such as roof elevations and waterproof membranes, that protect the building’s structure from water intrusion. Properly designed roofing with elevated drainage points and waterproof underlayments is essential for minimizing flood risks. Contractors may also recommend green roofs or designs with water-resistant plants that help control water runoff and add an extra layer of insulation.
Complying with Local Building Codes and Standards Contractors must stay up to date with local building codes, especially in regions with strict hurricane, wind, or earthquake requirements. They ensure that all materials, designs, and construction methods align with the latest standards for disaster resilience. Working within these guidelines not only strengthens a building's resistance but also ensures that any repairs or replacements are compliant, which can be critical for insurance claims and future building assessments.
Educating Clients on Proactive Disaster Preparation Lastly, contractors often provide guidance to commercial property owners on how to prepare for storms and natural disasters. This includes recommendations on regular maintenance schedules, inspection checklists, and tips on how to respond in the event of roof damage. Educating clients helps ensure they understand the importance of proactive roof care and are prepared to handle potential issues before and after storms.
In essence, commercial roofing contractors adopt a multi-layered approach to protect roofs from natural disasters, combining high-quality materials, meticulous design, and strategic planning. By reinforcing structural integrity, optimizing drainage, and creating resilient roofing solutions, these professionals help businesses stay safe, functional, and resilient even in the face of severe weather.

How to Maintain Your Commercial Roof: Expert Tips for Longevity
A well-maintained commercial roof is crucial for the longevity of your building and the protection of your investment. Whether you're dealing with extreme weather, general wear and tear, or environmental challenges, regular roof maintenance can prevent costly repairs and extend the lifespan of your roof.
With proper care, your roof can continue to provide optimal performance for many years. Here are expert tips to help you maintain your commercial roof and ensure its longevity.
Schedule Regular Roof Inspections
Why Routine Inspections Matter
The first and most crucial step in maintaining your commercial roof is to schedule regular inspections. Ideally, these should be conducted at least twice a year—once in the spring and again in the fall. Regular inspections allow you to identify potential issues early on, such as small leaks, punctures, or damaged materials. Catching these problems before they escalate will save you both time and money.
What to Expect During an Inspection
Professional roofing contractors can thoroughly assess your roof, check for damage, and recommend necessary repairs or preventative measures. For businesses with large or complex roofs, it's essential to work with a provider of commercial roofing services to ensure a comprehensive inspection plan is in place.
Address Leaks and Water Damage Immediately
The Dangers of Ignoring Leaks
Even a small leak can quickly become a big problem if addressed. Leaks can lead to water damage, mold growth, and structural issues that can be expensive to repair. The key to maintaining your commercial roof is to address leaks as soon as they are discovered.
How to Detect Leaks Early
Have a plan for regular roof checks after heavy rain or storms. Look for signs of water pooling or areas where water penetrates the roof. If you notice any issues, it's crucial to contact a professional who specializes in commercial roofing services to repair the leak before it leads to more significant damage.
Keep Your Roof Clean and Free of Debris
The Impact of Debris on Roof Health
One of the easiest ways to extend the lifespan of your commercial roof is to keep it clean and free of debris. Leaves, branches, and other debris can accumulate over time, creating areas where water can pool and cause damage. Regularly cleaning your roof helps prevent water from building up and finding its way into cracks or seams.
Maintaining Your Roof's Drainage Systems
In addition to debris, ensure gutters, drains, and downspouts are clear and functioning correctly. When drainage systems are blocked, water can back up and cause leaks or structural damage. Keeping your roof and drainage systems clear will prevent these problems and promote better water flow off the roof.
Maintain Proper Ventilation
Why Ventilation Matters for Your Roof
A well-ventilated roof is essential for preventing moisture buildup and controlling temperature. Poor ventilation can lead to trapped heat, which may cause the roofing materials to deteriorate faster. Moisture buildup can also lead to mold and mildew growth, damaging both the roof and the building's interior.
How to Ensure Adequate Ventilation
Ensuring your roof has proper ventilation will improve its longevity and contribute to energy efficiency within your building. If you're unsure whether your roof's ventilation is adequate, consult a roofing expert who provides commercial roofing services to evaluate your ventilation system and make any necessary adjustments.
Repair Small Issues Before They Become Major Problems
The Importance of Proactive Repairs
Minor issues such as cracks, punctures, or blistering are common during routine inspections. While these may not seem like significant problems initially, they can lead to more substantial damage if left untreated. Small cracks can widen, and punctures allow water to seep into the building's structure.
When to Call in the Experts
Addressing these minor repairs proactively will save you from more expensive fixes. A trusted commercial roofing services provider can help you identify and repair these issues before they escalate, ensuring your roof remains in good condition.
Apply Roof Coatings for Added Protection
What Roof Coatings Do
Roof coatings can significantly extend the lifespan of your commercial roof by adding an extra layer of protection against the elements. These coatings reflect sunlight, reduce heat absorption, and protect the roof from UV rays, which can degrade materials over time.
How to Choose the Right Coating
In addition to improving energy efficiency, roof coatings help prevent leaks and cracks from forming. Consult a commercial roofing services provider about whether a roof coating is a good investment for your building and the specific type of roof you have.
Trim Nearby Trees and Overhanging Branches
How Trees Can Affect Your Roof
Trees can threaten your commercial roof, especially if branches hang over the building. During storms or high winds, overhanging branches can scrape against the ceiling, damaging the roofing materials. Additionally, falling branches can puncture the roof or create weak spots.
Preventive Measures for Tree Management
Regularly trimming trees and removing overhanging branches will protect your roof from unnecessary damage and reduce the likelihood of debris accumulating on the surface. Keep the area around your roof clear to prevent these issues and maintain the roof's overall integrity.
Prepare for Extreme Weather Conditions
Preparing for Seasonal Challenges
Extreme weather, such as heavy rain, hail, high winds, and snow, can damage your commercial roof. Preparing your roof for these conditions is vital to its longevity. Inspect the roof for vulnerabilities before any forecasted storms or extreme weather and make any necessary repairs.
Post-Storm Roof Care
Conduct an additional inspection after extreme weather events to ensure no damage was caused. If you're unsure about the condition of your roof after a storm, contact a provider of commercial roofing services to assess the situation and recommend any needed repairs.
Conclusion: Invest in Regular Maintenance for Long-Term Protection
Maintaining your commercial roof is essential for protecting your building, preventing costly repairs, and extending the lifespan of your roof. By following these expert tips, you can ensure that your roof remains in optimal condition for years.Regular inspections, promptly addressing minor issues, keeping the roof clean, and working with a professional provider of commercial roofing services are all critical components of effective roof maintenance. With the proper care and attention, your commercial roof can provide lasting protection and energy efficiency for your building, safeguarding your investment for the long term.

Common Plumbing Problems and Effective Solutions: A Homeowner’s Guide to Keeping Your Plumbing in Top Shape
As a homeowner, dealing with plumbing issues is inevitable. From clogged drains to leaky faucets, these problems can disrupt daily life and cause costly damage if left unchecked. Understanding common plumbing problems and knowing when to try a DIY solution versus calling in a professional can save you time, money, and stress. Here’s a guide to the most frequent plumbing issues, practical solutions, and advanced services like drain snaking, power flushing, and camera inspections to ensure long-term fixes.
1. Clogged Drains
Clogged drains are one of the most common plumbing problems. Hair, soap scum, grease, and food particles often build up in the pipes, leading to slow drainage or complete blockages.
DIY Solution:
For minor clogs, a plunger can often resolve the issue.
Try a natural mixture of baking soda and vinegar to break down the buildup, followed by boiling water.
Avoid using chemical drain cleaners, as they can damage pipes over time.
When to Call a Professional: If plunging or DIY solutions don’t work, it’s time to call a plumbing contractor. Services like drain snaking or power flushing are far more effective at clearing stubborn clogs and ensuring the pipes are thoroughly cleaned.
2. Leaky Faucets
A leaky faucet is not just an annoyance; it can also waste gallons of water and increase your utility bills. This issue usually stems from worn-out washers, seals, or cartridges inside the faucet.
DIY Solution:
Shut off the water supply and disassemble the faucet to check for damaged parts.
Replace worn washers or seals, and reassemble the faucet.
When to Call a Professional: If the leak persists or if the faucet is an older model, a professional plumber can help diagnose whether more extensive repairs or a replacement is necessary.
3. Low Water Pressure
Low water pressure can make simple tasks like showering or washing dishes frustrating. This problem may be caused by clogged aerators, mineral buildup in the pipes, or issues with the water supply.
DIY Solution:
Clean out the aerator on the faucet or showerhead, as mineral deposits can often block the flow.
Check for any visible leaks around the house that could reduce water pressure.
When to Call a Professional: If cleaning the aerator doesn’t improve the water pressure, it could be a sign of deeper issues like a hidden leak or pipe corrosion. A plumber can perform a camera inspection to locate blockages or leaks within the pipes, ensuring a targeted and lasting solution.
4. Pipe Blockages
Blockages in your pipes can be caused by foreign objects, grease buildup, or tree roots invading your sewer line. These blockages can result in backups and slow drainage throughout the house.
DIY Solution:
Avoid pouring grease or oil down the drain, and use drain covers to prevent debris from entering your pipes.
For minor blockages, use a plunger or drain snake to try to clear the obstruction.
When to Call a Professional: If the blockage is deep within the pipes, it may require a more advanced solution. Professional plumbers use camera drain inspections to identify the exact location of the blockage, followed by power flushing or drain snaking to remove the obstruction.
Preventative Plumbing Tips
While many plumbing problems can be solved with quick fixes, prevention is the best approach to avoid future issues. Here are some tips to keep your plumbing in top shape:
Avoid pouring grease down the drain. Grease solidifies and clogs pipes over time.
Use drain covers to catch hair and debris in sinks and showers.
Regularly clean aerators to prevent low water pressure.
Schedule annual plumbing inspections to identify minor issues before they become costly problems.
Check for leaks regularly, especially in areas like under sinks, around appliances, or in your basement.
Advanced Plumbing Services for Long-Term Solutions
Some plumbing issues require more than a DIY approach. Professional services can provide long-term solutions and prevent recurring problems. Here are some advanced plumbing services that can ensure the longevity of your system:
Drain Snaking: A flexible, long tool used to clear stubborn clogs deep in your pipes.
Power Flushing: High-pressure water is used to clean out your pipes, removing grease, scale, and other debris.
Camera Inspections: This advanced technology allows plumbers to visually inspect the inside of your pipes, pinpointing blockages, cracks, or leaks for targeted repairs.
By addressing plumbing problems early and investing in regular maintenance, you can keep your home’s plumbing system running smoothly and avoid costly repairs down the line. When DIY fixes don’t cut it, trust professional plumbing services to provide efficient, lasting solutions.Need help with your plumbing? Contact DTEC Mechanical for expert plumbing solutions. AC Repair in Houston: Ensuring Your Comfort in the Texas Heat
Living in Houston means enduring sweltering summers, where temperatures frequently climb into the 90s and 100s. In this kind of heat, a reliable air conditioning system isn't just a convenience—it's a necessity. However, like all machinery, AC units can break down or lose efficiency over time. That’s where professional AC repair services in Houston come in. Prompt and skilled repairs ensure that your system continues running smoothly, keeping your home cool and your energy bills manageable.
In this guide, we’ll discuss the importance of timely AC repair, common issues with air conditioning systems, and how to choose the right contractor for your AC repair needs in Houston.
Why AC Repair in Houston is Essential
Houston's climate can be incredibly taxing on air conditioning systems. The combination of high heat and humidity forces AC units to work overtime, often leading to wear and tear. Delaying repairs can not only make your home uncomfortable but also increase the risk of more severe and costly issues down the line. Here’s why timely AC repair is so crucial:
1. Prevent System Failures
A minor issue, like a refrigerant leak or clogged filter, can snowball into a complete system failure if left unchecked. Regular inspections and prompt repairs ensure that your AC remains functional during peak summer months.
2. Improve Energy Efficiency
A malfunctioning AC unit typically has to work harder to cool your home, leading to increased energy consumption. Repairs can restore efficiency, reduce strain on the system, and lower your monthly utility bills.
3. Extend Your System’s Lifespan
By addressing minor problems early, you prevent more significant damage to components like the compressor or evaporator coil. Timely repairs can extend the life of your air conditioner, delaying the need for a costly replacement.
4. Enhance Indoor Air Quality
Air conditioners do more than just cool your home; they also help regulate indoor air quality. A malfunctioning AC system can circulate dust, allergens, and pollutants throughout your home, aggravating respiratory issues. Regular maintenance and repairs keep your system clean and ensure that the air you breathe is fresh and healthy.
Common AC Problems in Houston
Houston’s intense climate conditions can trigger several common issues in air conditioning systems. Recognizing these problems early on can help you avoid total system breakdowns and expensive repairs:
1. Refrigerant Leaks
Refrigerant is the substance that cools the air in your AC system. If there’s a leak, your AC won’t be able to cool effectively, and the refrigerant level will drop. Low refrigerant levels can also damage the compressor, leading to costly repairs.
2. Frozen Evaporator Coils
Evaporator coils can freeze due to restricted airflow, typically caused by dirty air filters or blocked ducts. A frozen coil will prevent your AC from cooling efficiently and can lead to more severe damage if not addressed quickly.
3. Clogged Air Filters
Clogged air filters are a common issue, especially in Houston, where high pollen and dust levels can quickly block airflow. A dirty filter makes your AC work harder, reducing efficiency and increasing wear and tear.
4. Thermostat Issues
Sometimes the problem isn’t with the AC unit itself but with the thermostat. If your home isn’t cooling evenly or the system is cycling on and off frequently, it could be due to a faulty or improperly calibrated thermostat.
5. Compressor Problems
The compressor is the heart of your AC system, responsible for pumping refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor units. If the compressor fails, your AC won’t be able to cool your home. Compressor issues are often caused by electrical problems or refrigerant imbalances, both of which require professional repair.
6. Drainage Problems
Houston’s high humidity means your AC has to remove more moisture from the air. If the condensate drain becomes clogged, it can lead to water damage and mold growth in your home. Proper drainage is essential for both the efficiency of your AC and your indoor air quality.
Signs You Need AC Repair in Houston
Some AC issues are obvious, like a system that won’t turn on. However, other problems may be subtler. Look for these signs that indicate you need AC repair:
Warm air blowing from the vents: If your AC is blowing warm or room-temperature air, it could be a sign of a refrigerant leak or a failing compressor.
Unusual noises: Grinding, squealing, or rattling noises often indicate mechanical issues within the unit.
Frequent cycling: If your system is turning on and off more frequently than usual, it could point to a thermostat issue or short-cycling problem.
Increased humidity indoors: Houston is naturally humid, but if your home feels more humid than usual, it might be because your AC isn’t dehumidifying properly.
Spikes in energy bills: An unexplained increase in your utility bills may suggest your AC is running inefficiently and struggling to maintain the desired temperature.
Choosing the Right AC Repair Service in Houston
With so many AC repair companies in Houston, how do you know which one to trust? Here are some key factors to consider when choosing a contractor:
1. Experience and Expertise
Look for a contractor with years of experience in the Houston area. Local expertise is crucial, as Houston’s climate presents unique challenges for HVAC systems. An experienced technician will know how to address common problems like humidity control and energy efficiency.
2. Licensing and Certification
Make sure your AC repair technician is licensed and certified to work in Texas. Contractors with certifications from industry organizations like North American Technician Excellence (NATE) demonstrate a higher level of professionalism and expertise.
3. Customer Reviews
Check online reviews to get a sense of the contractor’s reputation. Look for feedback on the company’s responsiveness, quality of work, and pricing. Word-of-mouth recommendations from friends or neighbors are also valuable.
4. Transparent Pricing
A reliable AC repair service will provide you with a clear, upfront estimate before starting any work. Avoid contractors who refuse to offer a written estimate or pressure you into unnecessary repairs.
5. Emergency Services
In Houston, air conditioning failures often occur during the hottest months when systems are under the most stress. Make sure the contractor offers 24/7 emergency repair services, so you’re never left without cooling when you need it most.
Preventive Maintenance to Avoid Costly Repairs
Preventive maintenance is key to avoiding unexpected breakdowns and keeping your AC running efficiently. Most HVAC contractors offer maintenance plans that include regular inspections, cleaning, and tune-ups. By investing in routine maintenance, you can catch minor problems before they escalate into major repairs. Maintenance plans also help keep your system running efficiently, reducing energy costs over time.
Conclusion
Living in Houston, you can’t afford to have a malfunctioning AC system. The city’s hot and humid climate makes air conditioning a critical component of your home’s comfort. Regular AC repairs and maintenance are essential for keeping your system running efficiently and avoiding costly breakdowns. When choosing an AC repair service in Houston, be sure to select a qualified, experienced, and reputable contractor who understands the unique demands of Houston’s climate.
