SUPER INTENSE AND SCIENTIFIC RANKING OF FALL OUT BOY ALBUMS

I gave all Fall Out Boy songs a rating based on this scale: 

1 – indifferent to this song

2 – like this song

3 – love this song

4 – LOVE this song

5 – FAVORITE

Then I got the average for each album, which left me with this ranking, which frankly surprised me. 

(I took all these track listings from Google. I actually listen to Fall Out Boy endlessly on Shuffle, so I don’t have a good feel for what song goes on what album and in what order. And they’ve got all those bonus songs tucked away in all those deluxe album versions and such, so I just had to...ignore those because this was already more work than I was supposed to be doing on this project, oops.)

#1 - From Under the Cork Tree, with an average of 3.62

This one was unsurprising. Honestly if anything, when I look back at this, I feel like I *under*rated a lot of these songs, so it should have been even more of a winner.

#2 - Save Rock and Roll, 3.55

I was confused by this, as I would not say this is a favorite album, and actually I think there’s a lot of songs on this album that I’m kind of middling toward, but none of the songs do I feel strongly negatively about, so none of them were ranked below a 3, and I think that kept its average high.

I definitely would have told you I like MANIA more than Save Rock & Roll, so I blame this ranking entirely on my dislike of Champion.

#4 - Folie a Deux, 3.38

I would also have thought Folie would be higher up there, and that makes sense because this album actually has the highest number of highest-ranked songs in it, with three songs ranked at 5, so I think my perception is I really love this album. But I was also surprised how many of the songs on this album are way down in my liking hierarchy. I think I have seen people criticize Folie as being uneven, and I guess my song rankings bear that out. When it’s on, it’s literally my favorite thing ever, but when they miss, I’m bored.

This makes it seem like I don’t like this album, which totally isn’t true, but I’m also not surprised it’s in 5th, because it doesn’t stand out for me as one of my favorites. I really dislike Thnks fr th Mmrs (it’s like the only song I routinely skip forward when it comes up on Shuffle). I did debate increasing the ranking to Hum Hallelujah, and I feel like I should have given it a 5. Sigh. THIS WAS REALLY DIFFICULT.

#6 - American Beauty/American Psycho, 2.91

This one didn’t surprise me, this is the album I usually think of as having the highest number of songs I’m indifferent toward. I’m actually surprised Take This to Your Grave ranked below this one. But Take This to Your Grave has a couple of songs I’m even more strongly indifferent toward. (I did not like Uma Thurman when it was a big radio hit and I didn’t know who FOB was, and I still don’t really care for it today, after all this time listening to it. The only reason it’s a 2 and not a 1 is because “I slept in last night’s clothes and tomorrow’s dreams” is a great moment in that song and such a Pete Wentz lyric and it makes me happy to belt it out whenever it comes up.) (Please note also that Fourth of July with its immortal line of “I’m sorry every song’s about you” does basically rank as my favorite lyrics in all of the discography, so this album does have that going for it.)
