Day: 1289
Shirt: TV On the Radio - Seeds
Color: Navy Blue
Brand: Next Level
Source:  if you have been in ear shot or instant messaging distance of me in the past 5 months you will know how much I enjoyed this album. I Abe followed this band since their first EP and while I have loved them and their music I think up until Seeds they haven’t made a perfectly cohesive album from start to finish. It’s not easy. Most bands won’t ever get close. A hit song here and there but to have something that can hold a persons attention from track 1 through track 12 is a serious accomplishment and should be applauded, celebrated and shared. The only downside to this album is that I think it’s sad that Gerard Smith wasn’t around to celebrate it with them. Perhaps this album was partly inspired by his spirit. Who knows what events lead to such a great record and maybe it doesn’t need dissecting only appreciation. Fucking. Great album!
If you want a shirt you can get one here at their store.  along with a beautifully colored album.
OR you can probably pick one up on their upcoming tour.

THE ONLY 10 ALBUMS OF 2014 THAT MATTER (basically)
10) Cloud Nothings - "Here and Nowhere Else" I still can't tell if I like this album better than "Attack on Memory", that shit came out of nowhere, I mean one album before that was pretty much straight pop-punk. Whoever got Dylan Baldi screaming and dissafected with adulthood deserves a high-five. This album is definitely more polished but still captures their big, biting sound. This video is pretty fucking weird but here's "I'm Not Part of me"` http://youtu.be/74TP8QhupLU 9) Death from Above 1979 - "The Physical World" I thought DFA were DEAD. Yeah ok I'm not funny, but they're also not dead! At first I didn't love this album because it was slower, I mean part of the attraction for me was the breakneck speed at which they assaulted their instruments. But this album is very good; more consistent and with better tricks. Here they are performing "Trainwreck 1979" on Letterman http://youtu.be/2ChD9dctzZc 8) Future Islands - "Singles" For the record, James T. Herring, I am single. I've never seen Future Islands play live, but I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what it would be like. Mr. Herring works so hard; enigmatic doesn't even begin to describe him. Also, this is a damn good pop album. "Seasons (Waiting on you)" is my favorite song of the year, and can we talk about the lovely video accompanying it? http://youtu.be/-5Ae-LhMIG0 7) St Vincent - "St Vincent" Not everyone gets what Annie Clark is doing but that's ok because this is not FOR everyone. I'm not trying to sound elitist but she's pushing the boundaries of music and that makes some (not so smart) people uncomfortable. Her live show has evolved to an otherworldly artistic performance (did her time with David Byrne have something to do with this?) oh and she still fucking shreds. Here she is melting brains on SNL with "Birth in Reverse" https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1vkehj_st-vincent-birth-in-reverse-snl_lifestyle 6) Real Estate - "Atlas" I had the pleasure of seeing Real Estate perform this year and they were as effortlessly lovely as they sound on the album. What I love the most about these songs is that at first listen they just sound like gorgeously arranged little tunes from some chilled-out dudes, but the lyrics are actually often kind of sad. Here they are performing "Crime" on Conan. http://teamcoco.com/video/real-estate-11-17-14 5) The War on Drugs - "Lost in a Dream" I loved War on Drugs' previous album "Slave Ambient" when I stumbled across it a few years ago, which is just about as good as this but somehow more people just knew about this one. Whatever the reason, I'm glad they do because Adam Granduciel's brand of atmospheric indie rock takes classic rock cues from the likes of Springsteen without plagiarizing. He has truly created his own sound with lush tracks that build to mountainous heights. Here's the video for "Red Eyes" http://youtu.be/1LmX5c7HoUw 4) Perfume Genius - "Too Bright" Heartbreaking, seething, smart, funny; this album has it all. Owing to the  drastically bigger, electronic sounds on this album, I thought it might lose some of the searing earnestness of his last album, but that's not true at all. Here's Mike Hadreas performing "Queen" on Letterman in a sassy pants suit over a harness, can this guy get any more amazing? https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x298m3n_perfume-genius-queen-live-on-david-letterman_music 3) Iceage - "Plowing into the Field of Love" Punk sentiment is alive and well in this group of extremely attractive Danish lads. This album is actually more mellow than their first two but with it comes more coherent and poetic lyrics. Don't worry, it still carries that lovely "i don't give a fuck" attitude. At first you might think "Can this guy speak english? Is he drunk? Does he even care??" I mean, just watch this video, oh and it's called "The Lord's Favorite" http://youtu.be/roB4hRdLlas 2) Swans - "To be Kind" This past year I went through some medical turmoil and this album came out during the height of that. The chaos and darkness in that album mimicked what was happening in my body; it was oddly comforting. Swans are not for the faint of heart, but if you're willing to let them take you into the darker places, you won't be disappointed. This is also probably their most accessible album. And oh BTW Michael Gira is 60, and fucking killing it. Oxygen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jSdTBGhDSg 1) Caribou - "Our Love" This album is glorious. A couple years ago I wasn't really into electronic music at all; I could've missed out on on some great stuff. The last Caribou album was good but there were only a few songs that I loved (but look up "Odessa", genius). Not sure what happened to Dan Snaith but something clicked with "Our Love". It also seems a lot more personal, I mean it IS called "Our Love"... Ok so I'm having trouble capturing this one, just promise me you'll listen. Here's Caribou's set at Pitchfork festival in Paris, watch this without dancing in your seat, I dare you http://youtu.be/j755GoKSrUE Honorable mentions: Cymbals Eat Guitars - "Lose" Mac Demarco - "Salad Days" Grouper - "Ruins" Perfect Pussy - "Say Yes to Love"

32. Perfect Pussy- Say Yes To Love
This Syracuse punk outfit came out with one of the most compelling and noisey punk albums of the year. It's raoucaous mix of Bikini Kill feminism and Black Flag-hardcore delivery have not been seen since Sleater-Kinney's last LP. Fast and loud guitars mix with the equally loud and energetic delivery of frontwoman Meredith Graves and along with feedback from the guitars and microphone give it a lo-fi quality that is usually associated with garage rock. "Driver" starts off the album and contains all of the before mentioned things. "VII" is at the end of this album and is a piece of noise created by what I believe are synthesizers and has Meredith's voice digitally delayed, it is like the static inbetween two different radio stations, one playing Tim Hecker and the other a speech by a totalitarian ruler. The bookends of the is album are the twin heads of Perfuct Pussy's music and it makes me wonder which direction they will take on their next outing.
Highlight: "Interference Fits" is a mix of slowcore and punk that is yet another side to this multifaceted beast.

My favourite albums of 2014...
I've decided (like everyone else) to compile a list of the albums released this year that I've been spinning the most. I found last year I was mostly listening to Hip-Hop & Rap, and the year prior to that was heavily Punk & Hardcore.
Well this year has swayed my attention back to the Heavy Metal genre, at least in terms of new music. Of course the odd Hip-Hop or Pop record has tickled my fancy as well, as you can see below. And I'm not done with discovering and listening to every release worth hearing this year. I'm still heavily (if not more so) spinning records from 2013 and prior.
So in no particular (actually in alphabetical) order, here are my favourite albums of 2014 so far:
Ape Farm - Cyber Slouch
Tumblr media
These guys are a local band where I'm from (Brisbane, Australia) whom I've had the pleasure of playing gigs with on numerous occasions. They're easily my favourite local band in the Punk scene and equally deserve a place among my favourite bands in general. This album is a super rad listen and the D.I.Y. production is killer! Every song is catchy as hell which for me was evident upon my first listen when I realised how many songs I already knew from hearing live. It's available for free streaming or digital download here: Cyber Slouch by Ape Farm
My brother likens them to The Minutemen and a non-metal version of Mastodon. They remind me of The Birthday Party and early Soundgarden. Either way they must be good because my 1 year old son dances around like crazy whenever they're on.
Artificial Brain - Labyrinth Constellation
Tumblr media
Artificial Brain have in my opinion put out one of the best death metal albums I've heard in years. It's got the brutal Frank Mullins circa Effigy of the Forgotten vocal style, melodic (and I don't mean Carcass) guitar riffs and a completely organic sounding drum tone. And let's not forget to mention how killer the album art is. To me this album sounds like what you might get if early Suffocation and later Deathspell Omega got together to breed some kind of satanic alien love spawn...and that's a good thing. It's so good I had to get it on wax!
Behemoth - The Satanist
Tumblr media
This is the first Behemoth album since 2004's Demigod was released that has really grabbed my attention. I've skipped through the albums in between and don't have any major problems with what I've heard, but ultimately felt they paled in comparison. The Satanist represents a departure from what I call the "Stadium Rock/Death Metal" sound, reaching back to their black metal roots while at the same time moving forward in a more mature melodic (once again I don't mean Carcass) death metal approach.
Similar to the aforementioned Artificial Brain, this album reminds me a lot of later Deathspell Omega records and also last year's Colored Sands by Gorguts, often favouring diminished chord progressions in place of technical palm muted guitar riffs. The production value is excellent with a far more organic tone than previous records, making the drums sound less trigger happy and more cavernous while still retaining a sharp punch.
The finishing result is a perfectly executed soundtrack to the apocalypse; cold, bleak and doomed to potentially be their best and last great album. Let's hope I'm wrong about that.
Boris - Noise
Tumblr media
Boris's latest album is pretty much amazing. These guys are kind of like an old favourite of mine these days. I'll keep their stuff on my phone even if I haven't been in the mood for them in months. You know, the same way you might do with Led Zeppelin or Kyuss (which I do). As a matter of fact I haven't spun this record in months and had forgotten it came out this year. But yeah, it's amazing. It compiles all the things Boris do that you've come to love about them into one of, if not their most focused album to date. For fans of Boris.
Gridlink - Longhena
Tumblr media
I really like this album a lot. I think this is the album I've listened to the most this year. Which isn't hard as it only runs for 22 minutes. I actually had never heard of these guys until this year, when a friend shared a link to this album stating it will probably be the best grindcore release of 2014. Well I checked it out and yeah, he was right. It's really good. I've since checked out their previous albums too and while they're also good, I actually think this one is their masterpiece. Plus I really like the album cover. It's cheesy but subtle enough to be sexy without making a point of it.
Look, if you like extremely fast drumming and whacky mathematical guitar parts, spend 22 minutes out of your day to check this out. It's on bandcamp so just stream it or something.
I Killed The Prom Queen - Beloved
Tumblr media
Okay so I'm expecting some people who know me but don't really know me to be surprised or put off by this album being on my list, and probably at least one other album a little further down, but I don't give a shit because at the end of the day you like what you like, right? People who do really know me won't be surprised at all. They're probably wondering why there's a lack of Kate Bush on my list or something, because she didn't release an album this year you dumb fucks!
Anyway, I Killed the Prom Queen put a new album out this year and I totally dig it. With the loss of several key members and about 7 years between this and their last effort, I guess they've had a chance to grow as song writers. This album takes the elements of their old material that they're best known for, and some how rearranges it into actual coherent songs.
On previous efforts one never had to look too hard to find a killer mosh riff or a super tender clean vocal melody, thrown somewhat randomly into a bunch of leftover In Flames riffs. They sort of had the right idea on their last album (Music for the Recently Deceased) but it was still in my opinion ultra-cheesy, and ultimately a product of a trend. Be that as it may, I had the opportunity to spend about 6 weeks on the road with these guys several years ago so I grew fond of them, and was keen to check out their new album when it dropper.
So it dropped, and I immediately noticed the maturity in the song writing. The songs are well paced, the clean vocals are tasteful and the mosh riffs don't feel recycled. It reminds me a lot of the last Misery Signals album and since I think the sun shines out of those guys arses I suppose you can call that a compliment.
Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence
Tumblr media
Lana Del Rey's new album Ultraviolence is a beautifully executed journey of the darker side of a Pop Star's life and her observations. At least I would assume so based on what lyrics and song titles I've paid attention to. I'm not really into lyrics, which I suppose is odd when it comes to reviewing Pop records as they're generally one of the most key elements. I guess I'll have to get better at appreciating and observing lyrical content.
But all the same I'm getting a vibe from this record which screams self-loathing. And from what interviews I've read with the artist I wouldn't be the least bit surprised. The music and melodies certainly would indicate as much.
Anyway, I really like and much prefer this album to her 2012 release Born to Try. My wife played that one a fair bit and while I certainly don't mind it, I never really got into it either. Ultraviolence on the other hand I discovered on my own and was instantly drawn in by the change in musical direction. It feels far more personal, and from what I know of her own musical tastes, seems to fall in line and be more true to her interests. Instrumentally it's almost completely left behind the electronic beats on her previous efforts in place of a live band, with a production that wonderfully compliments the often bleak themes and tones of the music.
This is a must listen if you're looking for something to drink your sorrows away to, or potentially a rad soundtrack to some meaningless up all night revenge sex if you've recently split with a loved one. Or if you're like me you might just like listening to this sort of thing regardless of how well your life is going.
Mayhem - Esoteric Warfare
Tumblr media
This is my favourite Mayhem album since 1994's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. I like pretty much all their albums to some extent but their first two will always be the best in my opinion. This one comes a close third though, pushing 2007's Ordo Ad Chao out of the race (only just, that one was pretty rad).
I like the production a bit better on this one too, it's still raw but it possesses a little more attack. I'm also glad that Hellhamer has continued to avoid the overuse of triggers that were so prominent on earlier albums, which I feel has been key to creating such a heavy and disconnected sounding album. That and Attila's vocals of course. Yeah, good album. Check it out if you haven't already.
Michael Jackson - XSCAPE
Tumblr media
This is Michael Jackson's second posthumous album, the first being 2010's self-titled Michael. I was actually pleasantly surprised by how good this album turned out. It's pretty much got everything going for it that the previous album lacked. It's hooky, all-killer-no-filler with a run time of only 34 minutes. My only beef with it is the first single Love Never Felt So Good's production differs on the album to the single version with Justin Timberlake.
The single version has a more classic Off The Wall back beat while the album version favours a modern club vibe. Seems to me if they'd kept the production of the single version but removed Justin's totally unnecessary vocals, this track would have been a perfect opener to the album. But that's just my opinion.
The rest of the album is made up entirely of potential singles as there's only 8 songs in total. If you get the deluxe edition it includes the entire album again with each song in it's original format, as recorded by the King of Pop himself. This is cool to hear maybe once because you get to fully appreciate how much work was involved in sourcing these tracks and turning them into one coherent listen. Some of the originals were fucking lame. No offense MJ, you're still the man.
Pallbearer - Foundations of Burden
Tumblr media
I hadn't heard Pallbearer prior to this album. I kept seeing dudes on Facebook posting about how good it was so I decided to give it a crack. I've only played it a few times so far but I'm definitely going to keep it in heavy rotation for a while. This is exactly how I like my doom to sound. There's actually riffs happening, and the vocals are suitably clean and dramatic without being cheesy. Cheesy has its place in metal, and fortunately its not here.
These guys should have written Black Sabbath's come back album. Or at least played a heavy role in producing and providing artistic direction. Better yet Ronnie James Dio should have lived on so we could continue getting more Heaven and Hell releases. Totally off topic but yeah...this is a really good album.
Run The Jewels - Run The Jewels 2
Tumblr media
Finally a banger! Holy shit it seems like all I listen to with the exception of MJ is Metal or stuff depressing enough for metal-heads to like. For the record, that's seriously not what I'm about but this year just happened to be a good one for metal. I think the last one was 2004.
So Run The Jewels are pretty much the best thing happening in Hip-Hop right now. El-P and Killer Mike are so on top up their rhymes, and bounce so well off each other that it's hard to imagine life before this duo. I'm not even joking. I thought their solo albums were total bangerz (they totally are by the way) but this collaboration is the beez neez!
Look I'm not even going to talk about it. If you like hip-hop & rap and for some reason haven't heard this yet, get onto it. This is their second album. Their first album came out last year and is also great. Just go get it. They're both available for free download.
Slipknot - .5: The Gray Chapter
Tumblr media
This is the second album on my list I was talking about, the one people will be thinking "WHAAAAAAAAT?" over. Once again if you know me well enough this won't come as much of a surprise. And once again, you like what you like.
So as far as Slipknot are concerned, they're one of the first heavy bands I got into, 15 years ago when their first album came out. These guys, Korn and Metallica. And while I know not everyone does this, there are plenty of people including myself, who have trouble letting go of those early influences. That being said, I'm not so stuck in the past that I can't tell the difference between quality and meh etc...
The point is bands like this one, I'll still check out their new material even if I don't really rate them anymore. And here and there I like what I hear. And I like this album. I don't love it, but at the end of the day they know how to write a catchy metal track.
This album is on my list not necessarily because I think it's one of the best albums of the year, it's here because I keep fucking listening to it, and I think that says something. It's not consistently rad, in fact it's God damn cheesy more often than not, but when it's on it's on. And I've always felt that way about this band. Plus what the hell is wrong with cheesy anyway?
Sunn O))) & Ulver - Terrestrials
Tumblr media
Ulver on the other hand are almost consistently on, and from what I understand so are Sunn O))), but I don't listen to them so can't really comment.
I think this is their second collaborative effort, the first one a track appearing on a Sunn O))) compilation or something. It doesn't matter. This is an actual album, only 3 songs yes but still 36 minutes in length which is just about as long as an album can be these days without feeling drawn out.
It's pretty much just jammy ambiance for the most part, which I'm pretty sure is how it came about in the first place, just a jam between the two bands. But they've added vocals and other bits and pieces in the post production and the end result is awesome. Just epic mood music, I'll spin it late at night when it's time to wind down. People have compared it to Miles Davis which I can totally hear, like it was left over cuts from the Sketches of Spain sessions and done a mash up with The Proposition soundtrack by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis or something.
I don't know? Check it out and see what you think.
Warpaint - Warpaint
Tumblr media
We're nearing the end now and I'm throwing this one on my list because it's really good and I want to listen to it more but so far have only heard it in passing. So I can't go into it too much unfortunately. What I can say is when I did finally hear some of the songs off this album a few months ago I was kicking myself for not sticking around to watch them at Laneway Festival this year. Granted I had killer chaffs and don't think my body could have physically held out much longer by the time they were on, but yeah man, I'm pissed.
So yeah, I'm going to keep listening to this one and I think it really does deserve a spot on the top albums of 2014. My wife's been listening to them for a few years now and I've always liked what I've heard. They're like doom rock (sometimes) with pop sensibilities and really pleasant vocals. And they certainly put anyone in their place who thinks girls can't play their instruments.
Siberian Hell Sounds & NONE - SHS///NØNE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My final review for this year's releases is a bit of shameless a self-promotion in that this is a split between my own band NONE and our good friends in Siberian Hell Sounds. Hence the dual album art. SHS at the top and NONE at the bottom.
The truth is I'm just really proud of this. The recordings came out sounding heavy as hell thanks to the man behind the desk Christopher Brown at Sun Distortion Studios. And I think the two bands compliment each other's sounds sounds nicely, there's a clear contrast between the two sounds but the whole thing flows coherently as one album.
Originally each band was going to take a side on a 7" record, but we soon realised SHS's songs were too long to fit on a single side so instead they bookend NONE's tracks and will be released on a 10". At the moment it's available for pre-order and digital download here:SHS///NØNE by Siberian Hell Sounds/NØNE
If you like black metal, thrash metal, d-beat hardcore and general crossover stuff than you should enjoy this.
