SEVEN MILES HQ EVENT: CRUEL SUMMER

It’s all about going the distance in the Keys, whether it be running away or finding your way back home. This time, with the simmering heat, it’s about finding ways to make moving under the swelter worth it. Just 166 miles away, the bustling city of Miami has wrapped up the kick start of its endless summer showcasing all you need to feel the right kind of way to carry on through Swim Week sponsored by the K. W. Women’s Club. However, a wave always crashes at the shore and while it’s a little late, it’s time for the Keys to have a taste of sophisticated fun.

Commencing Friday afternoon, the Women’s Club will be hosting a social event where entrepreneurs and local business owners have a chance to tease what they have in store for the week coming. But don’t have too much fun, because the Key West Yacht Club will be opening it’s doors bright and early on Wednesday to show off swim wear and the newest sailing gear in action with a race along the water that will even get residents the incentive to push past tourists on the beach for a view. To wrap it all up on the seventh day, the club once again extends an invitation beyond esteemed reservations where buying local, the backbone of the islands, is put on full display. Valued club members will offer their pride and joy vessels to be the runway for local businesses to strut their creations along the illuminated dock. With models plucked straight off of Duval Street, Key West Swim Week is the spice for the place where vacation never seems to end. Just remember, though, that as sweet as summer can be with what sloshes over your cup at the local dive bars, it can be just as cruel.

Our first event is finally here! Starting this Friday, the residents of Key West will be participating in local Swim Week full of interactions at the Yacht Club, the pier, and so much more on the Waterfront. Characters will be able to claim certain roles in the event which can be found below. A schedule, roles, and in-character as well as out-of-character guidelines can be found below.

Appetizers and drinks will be served all night long by the beck and call of guests by the Club’s infamous wait staff while the pier serves as a runway. While the band plays, each yacht owned by prestigious members serves as a personalized platform for each business to have models mingle with guests with a selective wardrobe before all of its on display down the pier.

She is originally from New York City. Diamond was born to a teenaged drug addict and was willingly put up for adoption the second she was born, only to be adopted a few short months later by Winston and Betty Bellevue - an older couple in their late forties who hailed from London, England. They had just moved to the Upper Eastside of Manhattan a few years prior, along with their four other adopted children. Her father was one of the top cosmetic surgeons in the state of New York, while her mother was a leading patent attorney, so they were often kept quite busy with work. Despite that, their work didn't stop them from being really attentive parents to their children. Dime had a great relationship with her parents, and though her siblings were significantly older than she was, she was still quite close to each and every one of them. That said, there were still some clashing personalities and views of opinion from time to time among the family - they weren't perfect, after all - but overall, everyone got along fine. There weren't any disputes that didn't go unforgiven for too long, which was nice. She had a very serious habit of shutting out her family, or even withdrawing completely for a while, as her work or mental state allowed it to happen...but her family eventually reeled her back in and she was grateful to them for that. They really were her rock, at the end of the day.

Despite being adopted by a wonderful and loving family, that did not erase the damage done to her by her addict birth mother. Dime was born with NAS (Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome) and this is believed to be the leading cause of her overall mental illness and eating disorder and later on, her own drug addiction later down the road.

When she was just toddler she was diagnosed with ARFID - she'd always had an aversion to food, starting from infancy and that never changed as she grew older. It worried her parents, because there were many times when she just wouldn't eat anything for days - refused all kinds of food - and it would end up with her in the hospital, being force-fed through a feeding tube, lest she starve. Her childhood diagnosis of ARFID has since turned into a full blown and rather serious eating disorder that she is still constantly battling to this day. When she turned seven, she was officially diagnosed with Bipolar, which she had apparently inherited from her birth mother also. The diagnose did not come as a huge shock to her family, since Diamond had always had very extreme mood swings - one minute she would be incredibly social and rambunctiously hyper, talking people's ears off and the next she would go very quiet and closed off and sink into a very noticeable depression. So by the time she was in middle school, she was taking meds and seeing therapists frequently, which was...tiresome to say the least. Despite her rather poor mental and physical health, Diamond still led a pretty normal life in Manhattan. She was a major hobbyist, even as a child, and so she was always bouncing from one activity to another, easily bored with things once she'd mastered it. She was always wanting to try and learn new things. Dime took up dancing, vocal lessons, piano and violin lessons, and dabbled in painting, scrapbooking, journaling, photography, needlework...you name it, she's very likely tried it at least once. Her interests in dancing, painting and photography were still strong, especially dancing. At the age of five her parents put her in her first dance class and she fell in love with it. She learned ballet first but quickly grew to love contemporary hip-hop the best and delved right into it. She still danced today, and could have gotten a full ride to Juilliard if it weren't for her modeling career taking off as quickly as it had. She was first introduced to modeling at the age of nine, when she was scouted while in the mall with her mother, and after getting both her parents' consent, Dime was allowed to be signed on to the agency and soon she began work as a child model. Child modeling soon turned into full-time as soon as she turned sixteen and by the age of nineteen she was at the top of her stardom. With her parents’ naively trusting that she would be well looked after, Diamond moved out of her parents’ home at sixteen, once she began making really good money off her modeling, and into an apartment with several other young models - five others, to be precise. So it was crowded, with it being only a three bedroom place, but they managed. The apartment building was full of other models who lived in various apartments, women and men alike, and soon these people because her ‘crowd’.

They partied together, slept together and fasted together. Fights were also not an uncommon occurrence among the models, since the industry was known to be quite competitive and brutally cutthroat. Within her first year of living with the other models, she became heavily addicted to narcotics and alcohol - it was ridiculously easy for her to get addicted, too, since she was predisposed to it from her birth. Sadly, in her new social circle, drugs and alcohol ran rampant at parties, even to the underaged.

It didn’t take long before she stopped taking her meds altogether and stopped going to therapy sessions, and instead Diamond submersed herself deep into her new life. Outside of modeling, when she wasn’t working, she often spent her nights out with her fellow models - partying, drinking, doing drugs and having a lot of fun and a lot of sex and she grew further and further away from her family. A family that she still loved with all of her being but whom she rarely saw anymore. She let the lifestyle pretty much consume her life, to the point where her world became a permanent sort of blur; she was rarely sober. Just shy of turning 20, Diamond met an older man named Ivan, who worked as an up and coming actor. He lived in Los Angeles but had been in New York shooting a film. The two had ended up bumping into each other at a party and had hit it off and began dating shortly thereafter. It would prove to be a very short-lived relationship - lasting only a few months, just long enough for Ivan's film to finish and for Diamond to fall pregnant. Unsurprisingly, Ivan flipped the hell out when she told him the news and he immediately fled back to California with his tail between his legs, wanting nothing to do with the baby. Deep down, Diamond couldn't really blame him - his career was just getting off the ground, same as hers and becoming a parent was a total derailment of his plans. As a young working woman herself, Diamond understood that...but she was no less pleased about it. After four years of living on her own, away from her parents, Diamond returns home - not really knowing what else to do, now that she was knocked up. Thankfully, her family welcomed her back with open arms. No one was anymore thrilled with the news of her pregnancy than she or Ivan were, especially given her obvious addiction to drugs, but they were far more supportive with her decision to keep the baby. However, her parents had insisted that she go to rehab and get clean and get back on her meds, first - for the sake of both her and their unborn grandchild - and though she initially fought them on it, Dime had agreed to go in the end. She ended up spending three months in rehab, getting clean and sober and getting back onto her meds and starting up therapy once again. It was an arduous process, but one she wouldn’t regret. When she welcomed her son, Dante - with a clear mind and a heart filled with nothing but love for the infant boy that she cradled in her arms - she’d felt immense relief that she had listened and had gone through the program. A year later and still clean and living with her parents in Upper Eastside Manhattan, while raising her son and still working full-time as a pretty well known supermodel, Dime made the rash decision to buy a beach house down in Key West, Florida. For her, her son and her family when they needed a place away from hustle and bustle of the city. She loved New York City, it was her home and where she worked, but she didn't want to raise her son there, at least not solely. Their Manhattan residence would always be there as their primary home, but a vacation house in the Keys sounded rather nice.

Every Record I Own - Day 532: Harms Way Rust

I picked up this LP at a Harms Way show at Brooklyn’s Knitting Factory back in July 2015. It was a good show, although the turnout was surprisingly light. There were maybe 50-60 people there, which seemed odd for a hardcore band on a solid label touring on a well-received new album. It might have had something to do with Knitting Factory. The venue didn’t typically host hardcore shows, and they might not have directed their advertising accordingly. Or maybe it had something to do with the overall strength of the bill. Not that the other four bands that played that night were by any means weak or a deterrent, but they were all relatively unheard of, and five years later I honestly can’t remember any of their names. But I think maybe there was another factor at play...

I’ve talked about this phenomenon a bit in the past, but one of the biggest shifts I’ve witnessed in my 25 years of touring is how shows have moved from suburbs and outlying urban areas into city centers. I toured through California probably a dozen times before one of my bands played in LA as opposed to somewhere in Santa Barbara, Long Beach, Anaheim, Riverside, or some other surrounding community. Similarly, out east we were more likely to play somewhere on Long Island or New Jersey than in Manhattan. Hell, it was even hard to play an all ages show in Seattle in the ‘90s---you were far more likely to get booked in Tacoma, Redmond, Bellevue, or Olympia.

I’ve often wondered if the shift has something to with the repopulation of city centers. Hardcore is a predominantly white scene, and the phenomenon of white flight meant that in the ‘90s you were more likely to see DIY shows in predominantly white areas---suburbs, college towns, etc. But white flight has seen a reversal in the 21st century as more people are moving back into city centers. So shouldn’t a hardcore show in a gentrified area like Williamsburg draw a big crowd? Or maybe I’m viewing this all through the lens of a guy that’s grown up with all his peers following a similar trajectory---go to shows at suburban spots when you’re a teenager, then continue going to shows around your college, then move to the big city and go to shows downtown. Maybe a certain style of hardcore still thrives in the suburbs but I’m just too old to see it.

With that in mind, maybe Harms Way’s brand of hi-def industrialized moshcore was less suited to the Williamsburg crowd than a band like, oh... say... Iron Lung or HOAX. After all, Brooklyn hardcore has a totally different connotation in 2020 than it did back in 1995. Maybe this was one of those shows that would have done better in New Jersey or somewhere further out on Long Island. But one of the coolest things about that Harms Way set was the fact that the gnarliest dancers in the pit were young African-American women who were just straight up wrecking shit. I guess it’s safe to say there isn’t a lot of crossover between the Harms Way’s crowd and the stereotypical Williamsburg hipster (and I’m not meaning to use that word as a pejorative). Maybe Harms Way’s crowd lives on the edges of the city, whether it’s people that have been forced out of their old neighborhoods or people who are tired of the soul-sucking void of strip malls and subdivisions.

For Lebanese Women, a Beach of One’s Own

JIYEH, Lebanon--They call it the ladies’ beach. The name is demure; the scene, not so much--at least not once they pass the parking lot, the man checking tickets at the front gate and the dim corridor at whose far end blazes a rectangle of bronze sand and sea.

Hijabs are unwound from heads, veils tugged from faces. Jeans and abayas evaporate, divulging string bikinis, tankinis and swim shorts. Under spindly cabanas by azure waves, two women lie chest down on lounge chairs, their bare backs implying bare fronts. All around them, gallons of tanning oil glisten on acres of copper skin.

When a man on a jet ski buzzes past, a female lifeguard warns him off with a staccato of whistle blasts.

“Men,” said Nada, a school bus supervisor from Beirut who was treading the Mediterranean just offshore, “are suffocating.”

In Lebanon, a sliver of a country on the Mediterranean coast where summer sticks to your skin like moist Saran wrap, the beach is less a luxury than a utility. It is hard to imagine going without.

Public and pay-by-the-day beaches line the coast from Tyre in the south to Tripoli in the north, and every other billboard on the highways out of Beirut seems to display a bikini model promoting a tanning aid. (SPF, evidently, is not in style.)

But many observant Muslim women consider it “haram”--forbidden--to expose their bodies in front of men who are not their husbands or, in some cases, close relatives. Other women may cover themselves in deference to conservative families and communities.

For them, a mixed-gender beach is to be avoided; those who go with their families roast in the sun fully clothed in hijabs and long-sleeved shirts and pants or abayas, the full-length caftans popular among devout Lebanese Muslim women.

Hence the emergence of ladies’ beaches like this one, the Bellevue Beach Club in the seaside town of Jiyeh--a salt-tinged hiatus from the male gaze for $18 a day, just 20 minutes down a trash-perfumed highway from Beirut.

It is a dedicated patch of sand for conservative women amid the cultural mélange of Lebanon, which, with its 18 recognized religious sects and vigorous all-night party scene, tends to be more socially liberal than other Arab countries.

At the Bellevue, there seemed to be as many different degrees of scanty cladding as there were women. For some women, religious scruples argued for more coverage. For others, style considerations, and the heat, argued for less. Each woman had made her own peace with the proportions.

“Here, I’m free to be me,” said Rabab Amhaz, 35, a housewife from the inland Bekaa Valley. She gestured to her tankini, bright with a teal floral pattern, and shimmied in the water.

Seeking a second opinion on her beach visit, she had consulted her brother, a Hezbollah fighter. He had not only given her his blessing but shown her a YouTube video of a Muslim cleric explaining that swimwear was acceptable among women, so long as the women covered their lower bodies.

Nada, who began wearing the veil when she married at age 14, dismissed this assessment: You could find a cleric to say anything you wanted, she said.

Following her own strong conviction that all the skin on display around her was forbidden--who knew who might be watching from one of the boats that periodically splashed by? or from behind the walls of the resort?--she had looked at herself in the mirror that morning and changed into a more modest bottom. She also declined to reveal her last name to a reporter, preferring to avoid the prospect of disapproval at home.

But a swimsuit was a swimsuit--in this case, a black-and-white patterned swim tank with black shorts.

“When you see me on Facebook, I look completely different,” she said, her hair loose and ropy in the water. “You wouldn’t recognize me.”

After next year, when she planned to make the hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim who can afford it is supposed to undertake at least once, she said she would avoid even the ladies’ beach; she, like many women who have completed the hajj, would adopt more modest attire.

And she frowned on the women who had brought their young sons, who are allowed up to age 8, to the beach. She did not want her sons or grandsons to get used to seeing women’s bodies.

But still. “I love to swim,” she said, smiling and shrugging, “so I have no other choice.”

Nada and Ms. Amhaz agreed on one point: absolutely no beach selfies, not even to share with their husbands. “No, no!” they exclaimed, high-fiving.

“My husband doesn’t need pictures,” Ms. Amhaz said. “He sees everything anyway.”

Cameras are banned, the better to protect the beachgoers’ modesty and privacy, though cellphones are not. But visits to several other Lebanese resorts, undertaken purely for journalistic purposes, suggested few other differences between women-only beaches and mixed ones beyond the obvious.

No matter the setting, gossip and hookah pipes scent the air. Snacks, water and shade are at a premium. People-watching is frequently rewarding.

Several ladies’ beaches fringe the coastline south of Beirut, their names redolent of sandy glamour around the world (the Laguna; the Bondi). The Bellevue Beach Club began offering women-only days in the mid-1990s after veiled women began asking for privacy.

Business was good--better than on mixed days, even. It soon went all women, all the time.

A man collects tickets, but no other males are allowed. Women staff the restrooms and the pool. The staff includes the Australian and Filipino wives of the brothers who run the Bellevue, who go to mixed beaches together.

There is a female DJ for the thatch-roofed poolside cabana where beachgoers undulate, hips exuberantly asway, to the Egyptian singer Sherine Abdel Wahab and the Lebanese singer Maya Yazbek.

Lebanon, where people from different sects share offices, neighborhoods and businesses, and crop tops can outnumber hijabs in some Beirut neighborhoods, might seem like a natural inventor of the ladies’ beach. But women-only hours at the pool or the beach are common in other parts of the Middle East, too, including the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, where dress codes for local women are more uniformly conservative.

At the Bellevue, there were no religious strictures regarding swim attire but each woman’s own.

Nada’s 21-year-old daughter wears modest gym clothing when she goes to mixed beaches with her husband; at the Bellevue, she wore a bikini top with a short swim skirt. She had brought a Syrian friend who, taken aback at the way the other beachgoers dressed, kept a tank top on.

Then there was Rana Ghalayini, a nurse from Beirut who had first put on the veil when she was 12, only to remove it because her family thought she was too young. When she married at 23, she and her husband agreed that she should be veiled. But she had resolved to keep her three young daughters unveiled until they, too, were 23.

“Religion is broad,” she said. “It’s a personal choice.”

Her reasons for wearing a one-piece swimsuit to the Bellevue were somewhat more earthly.

“If I were skinny,” she said, “I’d wear a bikini.”

“John Doe”, Alias God

On September 13, 1936, a man who called himself God led a parade of three thousand “angels” over ninety blocks south from the Kingdom of Heaven at 20 West 115th Street in Harlem.

God sat in a vintage automobile while young ladies in jodhpurs, derby hats and vivid green sashes danced and chanted to the music of kazoo-players and upright piano. God later made a speech in Madison Square Park.

God went by the name Father Divine, who ran the Peace Mission Movement from a five-story headquarters where today stands the Martin Luther King, Jr. Towers. A sign outside declared: “The abundance of the fullness occupies the entire area of this office; therefore, there can be no loitering.”

Father Divine was a rousing preacher, owned vast real estate, forbade smoking, drinking and sex, and evaded several attempts at criminal conviction by white authorities. He arose from an errant root-and-branch pulpiteer living in the Pigtown waterfront ghetto of Baltimore, to buying a mansion in Hyde Park across the Hudson River from President FDR.

Harlem in the roaring twenties was a scene of artistic revolution, where Fats Waller smashed thirds and Claude McKay heard “the halting footsteps of a lass,” but in the 1930s the neighborhood was a theater of political awakening, where Communists, union bosses, black intellectuals and cult preachers vied for a voice on the squawk tub. Father Divine acknowledged support from the Communists, but with the caveat that “just what the Communists have been trying to get you to see and do and be, I have accomplished.”

God was born George Baker, Jr. in 1879, in Rockville, Maryland. His family shared a small cabin of fourteen people, including the family of Luther Snowden, the only black landowner in the county. White religion in the area was chiefly Catholic, Jim Crow laws were brutal, and the local black neighborhood was called Monkey Run. When Baker was 18, his mother Nancy, a former slave to a tobacco planter, died. She was five feet tall and weighed 480 pounds.

Baker set out for the big city where he worked as a gardener in white middle-class blocks and taught Sunday school at storefront churches on Baltimore’s east side. Soon he took off South to walk the land and preach. His ideas about Man and Spirit were influenced by “New Thought,” a philosophy that God was a being inside the mind and flesh of all Man and Woman. New Thought had originated in the work of Phineas P. Quimby, a blueblooded clockmaker and doctor of mesmerism in Portland, Maine in the early 1800s. All could know God by self-mastery of the journey within.

Baker ventured to Los Angeles in 1906, where he participated in the Azusa Street Revival and first spoke in tongues. In L.A. he discovered his divine identity and cast off the personhood of “George Baker.” He began to call himself The Messenger and walked back South to craft a traveling ministry.

In Valdosta, Georgia, the Messenger held worship in his house and invited followers to a cooperative and holy living environment where they would leave their former homes, give up matrimony and pool all wages. “God will provide,” spake the Messenger.

The bulk of early congregations was made up of working black women, who found little self-liberation in the prejudiced demands of house-wife and child-bearer. As a result the Messenger incurred the anger of husbands who had him arrested and charged with insanity. He did not provide a given name so court records show the signature of “John Doe, alias God,” who secured release after white lawyers and townsfolk feared how it might look in the supremacist public eye to defend a group of black men. God agreed to leave town for good and take the message elsewhere.

By the late 1910s he was in New York City, setting up on West 41st Street in the old black neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen before establishing a co-op housing group and employment agency on Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn. Here he changed names a final time, assuming the full title Reverend Major Jealous Divine, after a passage in Exodus 34:14. Devout followers shortened it to “Father Divine.”

He found opportunity to buy a house for the Peace Mission in Sayville, Long Island, from a German resident seeking to aggravate a rival neighbor by deliberately advertising cheap rates for a “colored” buyer. As Father Divine had assumed a new identity, congregants too changed names to Beautiful Sweet, Faith Love, Holiness Love, Light Child, Beauty S. Love, Victory Luke and Onward Universe.

The speeches of Father Divine brimmed with invented words like “tangeblated” and “physicalating” to express new awareness. “God rematerialates and repersonifitizes!” When he was arrested in connection to an angel who stabbed a New Jersey process-server with an ice-pick, cops found Father Divine hiding behind the furnace in his Connecticut abode, trying to “invisibilize.”

Father Divine often invested happenstance with the moral strike of divine intervention. A clash with Savannah ministers once resulted in sixty days spent on a chain gang, after which the prison inspectors suffered a very bad car accident. When Father Divine and his flock were denied access to a beach in Long Island, a week later the ocean was wracked with an unknown black tar substance and the beach shut down for the season. When Judge Smith of Nassau County sentenced Father Divine to a year in prison for disturbing the peace and fostering white and black cohabitation at his jampacked free Sunday dinners, two weeks later Judge Smith died. Said Father Divine, “he sentenced God to prison and God sentenced him to death.”

Father Divine acquired substantial property in Harlem and moved his base to West 128th Street. He owned restaurants, laundries, barbershops, gas stations, huckster trucks and two newspapers. He ran a coal business which the District Attorney once abjectly investigated for a connection to bootlegged anthracite in Pennsylvania. During WWII the Peace Mission bought a 1929 hotel south of Atlantic City as a haven for war refugees and paid $3,500 in the property back taxes with $10 bills in a brown paper bag.

Newspapers exploited as novelty the legal troubles of a charismatic black businessman and gospel-shark claiming to be God. The New York Age, a Harlem daily, compared the Research Bureau of the Peace Mission to Russian secret police. Bellevue Hospital conducted a psychiatric evaluation of followers and determined that 16 out of 18 had “well-defined psychoses.” Because Father Divine saw sickness and death as a punishment to the weak-souled, followers who departed were often abandoned to the potter’s field.

At the 1936 Democratic National Convention, a Mission disciple called John the Revelator delivered the Divine Righteous Government Platform, which rejected the New Deal, labor unions, medical science and the insurance industry, but espoused laws against firearms, lynching and segregation. On Election Day Father Divine affected 50,000 followers to boycott the polls in defiance of real estate development taxes. “My duty,” he preached, “is to bring into the political field the very consciousness of God’s presence on earth as a living reality.”

In 1937 the IRS bugged him for $54,000 in tax liens while in 1938 he bought Hudson Valley property in the President’s neighborhood, where old New York has long stook family. Father Divine was humble. “I’m not God, but millions of people think I am… lots say I am the devil.”

Railed by the New York press and chased by lynch-mobs, Father Divine tracked a record that was chaste, magnanimous, shrewd and shazam. He might seem to have run a “vast collectivization experiment,” but built Heaven by the old-fashioned American gumption of land rights and evangelism.

The Ghost of Father Divine left his earthly body in 1965, and the last of the Harlem property was sold in 1984. Mother Divine, his white widow, continued to operate the Mission from an historic estate in Gladwyne, PA., where at dinner engagements and meetings with lawyers an empty chair was left open for the seating of Father Divine. Here the hexagonal marble crypt called “The Shrine to Life” holds the remains of George Baker, Jr. with gilt doors and crowned with a glass pyramid.

Stealing Ideas from Golf: The Hall of Fame

Tennis has the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. Newport is a very attractive New England town. It is fairly traditional Hall of Fame, with memorabilia and history exhibits. During the week of the induction ceremony, they hold a men’s 250 event there, on grass. The building is ivy covered. It is a relatively small facility, but it has a lot of charm.

You get to the tennis Hall of Fame by driving down Bellevue Avenue, the main thoroughfare through town, and it is one of the buildings you pass, among the other buildings. I have only been to Newport one time, and the first time I drove down Bellevue, I didn’t even see the Hall of Fame (I was on my way somewhere else). It was only on the way back that I noticed it. At the next intersection, there is a Social Security Administration building. Dunkin’ Donuts and CVS are only a block away. You stay wherever you would stay if you were not going to the tennis Hall of Fame.

Golf has the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Florida, not far from its headquarters in Ponte Vedra, Florida (where the ATP also has its headquarters). Golf’s Hall of Fame is part of the bigger World Golf Village, which is like a mini-Disney World for Golf. In addition to the more traditional Hall of Fame setup, with plaques and memorabilia, it has shopping, hotels, an IMAX Theater that shows films that have nothing to do with golf, and importantly, two golf courses. It has a giant lake near the main buildings, and on the sidewalks surrounding this lake they have embedded plaques with names of Hall of Famers. You can buy an affordable brick with a message of your choice that will be installed on the sidewalk near the champion of your choice.

You get there by driving down I-95, exiting via the signs that are dedicated solely to the World Golf Village (it’s actually called World Golf Village Boulevard), and then driving a little ways to access the various features. The buildings are nothing to get excited about -- pink Florida facades, mostly, and faux Spanish architecture -- not nearly as charming as the Newport building. Actually, not charming at all. There’s nothing else close by, except for cookie-cutter Florida subdivisions (albeit in nice surroundings).

What can the tennis Hall of Fame learn from golf’s Hall of Fame?

Let me be clear: I like the charm of Newport. World Golf Village is not charming. But the creators of World Golf Village decided to sacrifice charm for some out-of-the-Hall-of-Fame-box thinking. World Golf Village isn’t just a Hall of Fame. It’s a destination.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame is not a destination. It’s something you might do if you are in Newport for another reason, or nearby in New England. People actually plan trips to the World Golf Village and stay for a week. They don’t just visit if they happen to already be in St. Augustine.

Why is that the case? It isn’t purely location. St. Augustine is closest, but that’s a tourist town, not a real city. World Golf Village is 30-45 minutes south of Jacksonville, and a good hour and a half north of Orlando. It was built in the middle of nowhere, because it wasn’t trying to draw solely from nearby populations. It was designed to be the focus of your trip.

Accordingly, it has all the required elements of a destination. It has places to eat on-site (e.g., the Caddyshack restaurant, with Bill Murray on board). It has places to stay on-site, filled with pictures of golfers, and golf courses. Accommodations are, not surprisingly, golf-themed. And, there are things you can do besides touring the museum...namely, you can play a lot of golf on two World Golf Village courses. These courses are named after Hall of Famers. They were designed with the help of Hall of Famers.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame does not have these features, or to the extent it does, they are in no way packaged together. You can eat in the general area, but you could do that anyway. You can stay in a hotel, but it’s just a hotel in Newport you would stay at anyway. There is a grass court that hosts the aforementioned ATP event, and you can play on it for $120/hour, but there aren’t many courts and you aren’t allowed to stay on the court all day, even if you can afford it. And really, given where the tennis Hall of Fame is located, why would you even have your racquet handy?

I’m the last person who would want to Disneyfy something, but I think the International Tennis Hall of Fame needs to move in the direction of the World Golf Village...at least a little bit. Unfortunately, that may mean leaving Newport.

There is a good reason the Hall of Fame is in Newport. The first US National singles championship was played there in the 1800s. In that regard, it’s similar to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio (where the NFL was founded in 1920) and the very successful Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York (where the first baseball game was said to have been played by Abner Doubleday, though that certainly is not true). Canton is not charming, but Cooperstown has charm in spades. The entire image of the town is built around the Baseball Hall of Fame.

So tennis’s Hall of Fame fits that profile well. But tennis is more like golf than football or baseball. No one attending the football or baseball halls of fame would think they’d get 22 or 18 people together to play a game (unless you are the parent of a baseball Little Leaguer). By contrast, golf fans at the World Golf Hall of Fame sure as hell want to play some golf. And if I go to a tennis hall of fame, I’d like to play some tennis on some courts the pros play on, especially if they are grass courts. But for that to happen, the tennis Hall of Fame has to be a real part of my plans, not something I see on the way to something else.

Tennis outgrew Newport pretty quickly in the last century. By 1914, they had to move the singles championship to New York (it’s now the US Open). The Hall of Fame stayed behind to eventually host an ATP 250. It isn’t clear to me why it doesn’t host a women’s event, since women are members of the Hall of Fame. I’m sure there are many “reasons” (meaning money), but its ridiculous. In fact, I would propose a joint men’s and women’s event during the induction week, but the fact is, they don’t have room for that at the Newport facility.

There must be another venue, somewhere in the world, that has more charm than the World Golf Village, but could be its own tennis complex, with on-site restaurants, on-site accommodations and lots and lots of tennis courts. There was a potential opportunity years ago in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, where the ATP headquarters is. When the ATP headquarters originally was built in the early 90s, it had lots of courts on all the various surfaces. Sawgrass, where The Players Championship is played and the PGA is headquartered, is literally down the street. The surroundings are beautiful and sufficiently distant from Jacksonville to make it a getaway. Less than a mile away is the Atlantic Ocean. That facility could have gone a long way towards an International Tennis Hall of Fame destination site, without going full Disney.

Unfortunately, those facilities were underutilized, in part because of the USTA training facility in Orlando. The facilities since have been sold (or maybe leased) to a local private school, which has paved all the surfaces for the high school tennis team. The ATP’s headquarters is now in a nice tree-shrouded office building across the street.

I will admit that it may be hard to find a facility as charming as Newport’s that also has these other features. I suspect that’s nearly impossible in the U.S., particularly if you take into account a site that has some historical significance for tennis. However, tennis is a truly international sport, so its Hall of Fame doesn’t have to be in the US with all the other halls of fame.

Golf focused on making its hall of fame a destination. It did not require the site to have a historical connection, and essentially built it from the ground up. That’s a bit ambitious for tennis, but I would suggest that tennis loosen the historical restriction, as fans are more interested in what they can do while visiting a hall of fame than they are the historical basis for the hall of fame’s location. And rather than market it as “While you are in the area...”, how about “Bring your racquet...”?

Women’s 360 Hoops Invitational Elite Bracket Filled With Top Pro, Collegiate Players In Daytona Beach, Fla. Saturday

It will be showcase of not just a new sport but elite women’s basketball talent on Saturday when a top field of 32 international professionals and collegiate players compete in the Elite Ladies Hoops bracket of the inaugural 360 Hoops Invitational (dmesportsacademy.com/360hoopsinvitational/) at DME Sports Academy (2441 Bellevue Ave., Daytona Beach) from 6-9 p.m. 360 Hoops partner Orlando Boom (www.theorlandoboom.com), the region’s premier women’s professional basketball organization and 2019 WBDA National Champions, will stock much of the talent, led by Antoinette Bannister, Aisha Brock, Alexis Prince, Ionna McKenzie and Stephanie Ball.

360 Hoops (www.play360hoops.com) is an exciting, inclusive addition to the shape of the game at all levels, incorporating a three-on-three, three-basket, three-team circular court form of the sport. Three teams compete at a time on the 30-foot diameter circular court, which features a single stanchion with three regulation baskets facing away in each direction. Players can score for their teams in any of the three baskets.

#TBT Recipe - ‘Quiche Lorraine Like Jack Made on Three’s Company Before I Had a Clue What Gay Meant’

Come and knock on our door any Tuesday night in the late 70’s and you’d find me unsupervised sitting in a bean bag chair watching ‘Three’s Company’. It was an hilarious farce about roommates Jack, Janet and Chrissy, Stanley and Helen Roper, their cranky landlord and his sex-starved wife and skeevy neighbor, Larry Dallas.

Plus, there was sun and sand! From being landlocked between a cornfield and a pig farm in the Middle West to suffering the bark covered, sun starved Pacific Northwest, Santa Monica looked like paradise! I longed to be in water that wasn’t a lake full of pheasant shit or a beach where you could do more than shiver and have kelp fights.

Later in life, I learned that several of my peers were not allowed to watch ‘Three’s Company’ because of the racy content. Why was I? It is possible that because Meth Mom was distracted selling her wares like a deranged Tupperware lady and with Scotch Dad’s regular trips to French Lick Indiana that they just didn’t notice?

Anything racy went right over my head, except for maybe Chrissy’s lack of undergarments. She was balanced out by still-attractive, but sensible Janet who wore glasses sometimes. Even Larry, a man for whom the roofie was invented was tempered by Jack’s physical comedy and sensitivity.

As for Jack pretending to be gay to assuage Mr. Roper in order to live with two women, that just seemed unfair! Plus, I didn’t know what gay meant. I was confused at why Mr. Roper calling Jack a beloved character from Peter Pan would be an insult?

Later, I was watching The Village People perform “In the Navy” on a battleship and Meth Mom zipped through on a quick vacuum run in between batches and said, ‘Gay’. Huh. I looked at the TV and saw a group of men in costume having a lot of fun. Okay. Gay means fun and in costume. Case Closed.

A couple of years later, I was with Meth Mom making our way through a JC Penney’s en route to the better stores and we got behind a couple holding hands. I noticed that they both had extremely hairy arms and I thought, that poor lady, can’t she Nair them? Then they looked at each other and I could tell it was two men. My six year old brain gave pause, then I saw the way they looked at each other and all I saw was happiness. Despite the fact they were in Bellevue Square’s worst store.

Jack Tripper, the Village People and the hirsute couple in Penney’s would be my first lasting associations to what gay was; a deft physical comic with a sensitive heart who liked to dance in costume and wasn’t above shopping in discount department stores.

In honor of ‘Three’s Company’, the show that kids were not allowed to watch but were never told why, a nod to Jack’s later years as a French Chef. Bon Appetite!

INGREDIENTS:

(9 inch) pastry dough

12 slices bacon, crisply fried and crumbled

1 cup shredded swiss cheese

1⁄3 cup minced onion

4 eggs

2 cups whipping cream

3⁄4 tsp salt

1⁄4 tsp sugar

1⁄8 tsp cayenne pepper

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 450°F.

Sprinkle bacon, cheese and onion in pastry-lined pie pan.

Whisk eggs slightly, Beat in remaining ingredients.

Pour mixture into pie pan.

Bake for 15 minutes at 450°F.

Reduce oven temperature to 300°F.

Bake an additional 30 minutes.

Quiche is done when knife inserted 1 inch from edge comes out clean.

Important--let stand 10 minutes before cutting.

Cincinnati Ladies Shed Their Clothes And Their Inhibitions At The Floating Bath House

Anchored near the Public Landing, Cincinnati enjoyed a Floating Bath House from 1867 through 1892. During its last decade, the Floating Bath House provided the only option for Cincinnati women who wanted to swim.

Swimming, according to an article in the Cincinnati Commercial Gazette [17 July 1887] provided women with more than fun and exercise. Swimming was an escape from restrictive Victorian manners and clothing:

“What a relief it must be to throw away for a few hours of the week the conventionalities of society, stop appearing dignified, and hie oneself to a place where the proper use of muscles can be demonstrated, and what a pleasure, too, it must be to kick off the skirts and stays and furbelows for once and find the feet free from shoes and stockings.”

The Floating Bath House, operated by brothers Robert and Rudolph Schmidt, was constructed just upriver from Cincinnati and it was a sight to behold. It was 200 feet long and 50 feet wide and rose 15 feet out of the water. The center of the vessel had no floor, allowing swimmers to plunge into Ohio River water through an opening 65 feet long and 20 feet wide. Aligned with the river currents, fresh water flowed through the Bath House continually.

The swimming area was surrounded by 68 dressing rooms supplied with a couple of towels, soap, a mirror and a bathing hose. Fore and aft of the main bathing area was an array of 24 private bathing areas – essentially, bath tubs filled with circulating river water.

Naturally, the Floating Bath House raised protests from Cincinnatians. A letter signed only “August” appeared in the Cincinnati Enquirer [30 May 1874]:

“It is a well enough institution for private baths; but oh, for the public baths. At times there are at least sixty-five together in one tub. Is this not outrageous? Where do a great many young men go to spend their Sunday instead of going to church? They go to the river.”

That complaint was confined to men because, before 1880, only men were allowed onto the Floating Bath House. Women gained some access after a letter, signed only “Amelia B.” was printed in the Cincinnati Star [5 June 1880]:

“The large floating bath house at the foot of Broadway is now daily receiving its hundreds of men and boys who enjoy the luxury of a cool plunge; but no one seems to have an idea that a large number of our city ladies would be glad to have the same privilege, and I throw the suggestion out to the enterprising proprietors that if they would appropriate, say one or two days or afternoons a week exclusively for ladies, and have lady attendants, &c., it would prove a pecuniary benefit to them and confer a boon much needed by the female portion of the community.”

Within days, the proprietors set aside every Tuesday and Friday morning exclusively for women, under the watchful eye of Robert Schmidt’s wife, Fanny. Ladies days were an instant success. (They were such an immediate success, in fact, that cynics might be forgiven for thinking that “Amelia B.” was a pen-name for the Schmidt brothers themselves.) The Cincinnati Commercial Gazette [17 July 1887] reported, without a trace of cynicism:

“Ladies Day at the Floating Bath is becoming more and more popular. The whole forenoon of Tuesday and Friday of each week is especially set apart for them and no man no matter who he be is permitted to enter upon those occasions so zealously guarded by either Mrs. Robert Schmidt or her sister.”

Because the Schmidts understood that few Cincinnati women knew how to swim, they provided an “instructress,” Miss Pauline Zittell to offer lessons in swimming and diving throughout the women’s hours.

The women who showed up for Ladies Days at the Floating Bath House represented the more educated and affluent families of Cincinnati. Several were wives of doctors, while others traveled from Avondale just for the opportunity to swim a few laps and, of course, to study the latest swimming fashions:

“The bathing suits which the women wear are composed most generally of one garment, which is quite sleeveless and hangs loosely about the shoulders, terminating in a pair of trowsers which reach to the knees and over these trowsers is a short skirt about the length of the flannel undershirt worn in winter. These costumes are of all the colors that can be named in a milliner’s vocabulary and of various fabrics.”

Eyebrows rose again nine years later when the Floating Bath House allowed men and women to swim together in the evenings, from 7:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. Robert Schmidt felt compelled to issue a statement to the newspapers, clarifying his intentions. This is what the Commercial Tribune [23 August 1889] had to say:

“The object of Mr. Schmidt is solely to promote the art of swimming under proper care and conduct, such as is indulged in at any of the seaside resorts. Under no circumstances will the bath house be made a place of meeting by doubtful characters.”

Somehow, Cincinnati survived the prospect of women and men splashing together in the muddy waters of the Ohio River. Co-ed swimming continued for three more seasons. It all ended in January 1893, when the Bath House, moored for the winter at the foot of Martin Street, burned to the water line because of an overheated stove.

By then, the Floating bath House had competition. Cincinnati had almost 20 bath houses scattered around the city, including a Bremen Street spa with a 100-foot pool and the Munro Turkish bath at 29 West Seventh that offered “Turkish, Russian, Vapor, Sulfur, Electro-Thermal, Medicated, Mineral and Mercurial baths.”

By the time the Floating Bath House burned, beaches on the Kentucky shore at Dayton and Bellevue attracted most of the summer swimming crowds.
