MK23/JD91 aka the Matthew Knies and Josh Doan primer

Background/context:

Matthew Knies (no. 23, TOR): born 17th October 2002 in Phoenix Arizona. Here are some beautiful pictures of him

Josh Doan (no. 91): born 1st February 2002 in Scottsdale Arizona, and he is the son of Shane Doan (yotes legend). AND HE’S MY BEAUTIFUL AMERICAN TEENAGER 👹

Growing up they were best friends, Josh's father, Shane, would let the two into the coyotes locker room where the pair would play mini-sticks

They were both in the Arizona Jr. Coyotes hockey program together from 2015-2019. And won the Arizona Amateur Hockey Association 16U Tier 1 State Championship (fucking mouth full that is) with each other. (please i'm crying they're so tiny in the first photo 😭)

shane also coached the two boys and there is one quotes from another one of their coaches, Mike DeAngelis, that (make me go insane) sums up these two's relationship perfectly

"(Shane Doan) treated Matthew like he was his own son."

And in the same interview Mike called matthew and josh "two peas in a pod." (They are literally found family 😭)

Another piece of information that isn't really important is that matthew was at shane's number retirement, idk i just thought it was sweet

Then the 2 went their separate ways with Josh going to Chicago Biosteel and Matthew going to tri-city but even though they were apart this didn’t stop them from chirping each other in insta comments (aka it was matthew bullying josh)

in 2021 they were both drafted; josh doan was drafted 37th overall by the arizona coyotes (full circle moment 🥹) and matthew knies was drafted 57th by the Toronto Maple Leafs and in the post matthew put out josh commented this 👇

In 2022 they both opened a hockey academy in Arizona called "Knies & Doan Hockey Academy" that ran from the 27th of June to the 30th of June.

Mary Pickford (1892-1979) was a legendary silent film actress and was known as 'America’s sweetheart.' She was a founder of United Artists and helped establish the Academy. Mary Pickford was born Gladys Mary Smith in 1892, in Toronto, Canada. She was the sister of actor/director Jack Pickford and stage/screen actress Lottie Pickford. Pickford began performing at the age of five on the stage and was known for a time as 'Baby Gladys.' After touring in different shows and productions for more than nine years, she went to New York to conquer Broadway. In 1907, she made her Broadway debut in The Warrens of Virginia. David Belasco, the producer of the play, insisted that Gladys Smith assume the stage name, Mary Pickford. In 1909, Pickford got into film, working for D. W. Griffith, a director and head of the Biograph Company (American Mutoscope & Biograph). That same year, 'the girl with the curls' appeared in 40 films for Biograph (According to some sources even 51 films). In January 1910, Griffith moved his operation to California, and Pickford went with him. Actors were not listed in the credits of the Biograph pictures. Audiences noticed and identified Pickford within weeks of her first film appearance. Exhibitors in turn capitalized on her popularity by advertising on sandwich boards that a film featuring 'The Girl with the Golden Curls' or 'The Biograph Girl' was inside. Pickford left Biograph in December 1910. The following year, she starred in films at Carl Laemmle's Independent Moving Pictures Company (IMP). Unhappy with their creative standards, Pickford returned to work with Griffith in 1912. Some of her best performances were in his films, such as Friends, The Mender of Nets, and The Female of the Species. In 1913, she moved on to Adolph Zukor who had formed one of the first American feature film companies: Famous Players in Famous Plays later known as Paramount Pictures. Hearts Adrift (1914) made her irresistible to moviegoers. The film was so popular that Pickford asked for the first of her many publicized pay raises based on the profits and reviews. The film marked the first time Pickford’s name was featured above the title on cinema marquees.Tess of the Storm Country was released five weeks later. Biographer Kevin Brownlow observed that the film "sent her career into orbit and made her the most popular actress in America, if not the world." Over the years, her fame grew as well as her salary. 'Little Mary' became an international star, beloved for her beauty and charm. She often appeared on screen in young girl roles, even when she was an adult. Walking 1968

Watercolor in animation!

Walking is a short animation illustrating the different gaits seen in everyday life. The pictures were drawn by Ryan Larkin in Toronto in places like the bus stop, park benches, and outside people's houses. In their walks we can see the nuances in each ordinary person and hints of their stories through wonderful fun illustrated pictures.  

Larkin used an ink and wash technique, which is a watercolor technique that focuses on linework. Lines are drawn using a brush or marker, then diluted inks (washes) are applied to create values for shadows and color. The watercolor can create many interesting animation effects, for example at 1:00 there is a flashing effect. The flashing effect is produced by only painting every other frame in the walking animation and leaving the rest with only the linework.

There are some walk cycles where he uses the traditional ink wash to render light and shadow for every single frame. Examples are at 1:30 with the camera panning from the calves up to the head of a kid. As he is walking, the light/shadow shapes change as he moves and there even is a use of perspective when the hand swings across the screen towards and away from the viewer.

The ink wash technique also makes for interesting smear frame effects when the kids are doing cartwheels.

My favorite part of the film is at 2:40 with his use of negative shapes to draw the figure with minimal details. 

Many people love the film “Walking” because of the beautiful colors and linework and has won the academy award for best animated short. It also made the first time NFB could sell to a major American tv network.

Paris Saint-Germain continues its global business success story and brand expansion opening stores in collaboration with Lids and Fanatics and will officially open their new Club official store on December 15th, located at 399 Queen Street W in Toronto.

As part of the football club's long-term partnership with Fanatics, Lids oversees the operations for PSG store locations to create one-of-a-kind and consistent retail experiences worldwide for sports fans and fashion mavens alike to enjoy. The Paris Saint-Germain store in Toronto is the first flagship store of the Rouge & Bleu in Canada, the fourth in North America (New York, Miami, Las Vegas, Toronto), and the 14th worldwide (France (3), London (1), Seoul (1), Tokyo (3), Doha (2).

For this opening, which marks a new milestone in the Club's development, Paris Saint-Germain has decided to engage with the local community. The club is partnering with the Play Forever Association, which implements its sports programs for the youth of Toronto with a focus on education, entertainment, and care.

The Paris Saint-Germain and Play Forever partnership will kick off with a holiday event, inviting local kids to receive gifted products at the boutique. Next year, Paris Saint-Germain will fly-in expert coaches from PSG Academy to train local coaches as well as offering Toronto youngsters with dedicated football camps. On the longer term, a specific program will allow the girls participating in the program "Allez Les Filles" in Parisian suburbs to meet with their counterparts in Toronto.

EXCLUSIVE: Masterpiece has boarded Alice & Jack, the Channel 4 TV series starring Andrea Riseborough and Domhnall Gleeson.

The PBS strand will air the show from Mad Men’s Victor Levin next year following a deal struck with distributor Fremantle.

Alice & Jack stars Riseborough and Gleeson as the titular characters in what distributor Fremantle described as a “love story for the ages.” Logline adds: “When they first meet they’re bound by a connection so powerful it seems nothing can break it, but will their path lead them to a place of happiness and togetherness? Or will life and their own emotional complexities get in the way.”

Alice & Jack has been in the offing for years but was only announced last month, and it will premiere at TIFF tomorrow.

Upon its announcement, Gleeson said “the only work I’ve wanted to watch and do since the pandemic is work about connection and love, and work with a sense of humour.”

Today, Masterpiece exec Susanne Simpson described the show as an “exceptionally beautiful and profound series that we are proud to add to our lineup.”
