I read somewhere that there are more of these stone arch bridges in our county than anywhere else in the country. This is the Hitt Bridge over Antietam Creek. It's a 105-feet long with a high center arch was built at a cost of $1,413.66 in 1830. A few months ago I was 2/3 the way across in my car when a police car suddenly met me head on. Luckily he stopped in time and backed up--it's only one lane. If you had tried to cross around September 17, 1862 you would have encountered thousands of civil war soldiers from both sides about to fight the bloodiest battle of the war. If you had been there at the right time in 1755, you would have seen General Braddock and army fording the creek on his way to defeat and death (relieved by a 23 year old George Washington). #stonebridge #archbridge #antietam #antietamcreek #civilwar #battleofantietam #frenchindianwar #singlelanebridge #washingtoncounty #maryland
