Jason is having a hard time letting go. This chapter is summarized as "Good Times on Earth" in my notes. That's fairly accurate.
Tim's parents are overjoyed to see him. They didn't know when to expect them, exactly—just a vague 'sometime in the near future.' Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner are the Green Lanterns currently stationed on Earth, and they've kept the Drakes apprised of Tim's situation, but only in a rough, nonspecific sort of way. Something about not wanting to draw too much attention to the matter. Jason isn't sure, but he suspects the Corps has been tiptoeing around the whole child soldier business and hoping no one calls them on it.
Plus, there was someone gunning for heroes' civilian families while they were gone, so that was apparently a concern as well.
"Poor Stephanie," Mrs. Drake says as she explains. "Her mother, you know. It… wasn't pretty. And her father's an absolute good-for-nothing, which made the whole thing even worse."
"Wait, Stephanie's mom is dead?" Tim looks positively gobsmacked at the news. "Did Bruce— I mean…"
"She stayed with us for a little while," Mr. Drake says, sounding gruff while his eyes shine slightly. "She was only a few months short of eighteen and we had the space. She kept looking for you even after other people gave up. We were more than happy to help."
Tim blinks, obviously surprised. "Did you, um. Did you make her stop—"
"If she's no longer Robin, that's not down to anything we said," Mrs. Drake says, some strange emotion Jason can't place flitting across her face.
