(DES MOINES, Iowa) — As hospitals and nursing homes desperately search for hand sanitizer amid the coronavirus outbreak, federal regulators are preventing ethanol producers from providing millions of gallons of alcohol that could be transformed into the germ-killing mixture.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s roadblock has been frustrating the health care and ethanol industries, which have been calling for a relaxed regulation to deal with the public health care emergency.
“Hand sanitizer is a big part of our lives,” said Eric Barber, CEO of Mary Lanning Healthcare, a hospital in Hastings, Nebraska. “We can’t get any. We order it and it’s just not available.”
The problem for the ethanol industry is that most plants make food-grade ethanol, one step below the highest pharmaceutical grade. But since the plants aren’t certified to comply with stringent production standards designed to protect quality of medicines, food ingredients and dietary supplements, the FDA doesn’t want the alcohol used for a product to be applied to the skin.
In addition, the alcohol is not denatured or mixed with a bitter additive to make it undrinkable. The FDA insists this step is “critical” because of cases of poisoning, sometimes fatal, among young children who have accidentally ingested hand sanitizers.
An FDA spokesman said Thursday that regulators have already seen a rise in poisonings linked to hand sanitizers in recent weeks, “heightening this public concern.”
The FDA is also skeptical of industry claims that undenatured sanitizers could be distributed in a way that would keep them away from children.
“It is unclear what, if any, measure could be instituted to ensure that the product does not make its way into consumer hands, where children could have access,” FDA’s Jeremy Kahn said in an emailed statement.
Facing a nationwide shortage, Barber said the FDA should temporarily relax regulations to allow alternative production.
“You’re talking about alcohol. Does it matter if it’s fuel grade or whatever the stuff is they’re trying to price gouge now? I think its common sense,” he said.
The American Hospital Association encouraged flexibility to help protect patients and caregivers, without directly weighing in on the sanitizer dispute.
“We may need to consider a range of possible solutions that were not on the table before the pandemic,” said Nancy Foster, a vice president with the group, in an emailed statement to the AP.
The Consumer Brands Association, formerly the Grocery Manufacturers Association, has had conversations with the FDA to push the agency to reconsider its guidelines. The group, which represents branded food, consumer products and beverage companies, said that hand sanitizer supplies are running so low that its members have had to ration it out to workers in stores, distribution centers and manufacturing plants.
“We need a temporary solution,” said Mike Gruber, vice president of regulatory and technical affairs at the trade association. “This goes toward ensuring basic food safety practices.”
Distillers that produce vodka, whisky and other alcoholic drinks have been given some regulatory waivers by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau allowing them to produce hand sanitizer. Many have done that, but they produce much smaller volumes of alcohol than an ethanol plant could produce. They also receive a benefit in the Senate-passed stimulus bill.
The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, which represents dozens of large and small distillers, applauded Congress for easing taxes on distillers who make hand sanitizer.
Under the stimulus package passed late Wednesday, distillers don’t have to pay federal excise taxes on alcohol used for hand sanitizer through Jan. 1, 2021.
“Hundreds of U.S. distillers are stepping up to produce hand sanitizer and they should not be hit with a huge tax bill for producing this much-needed item, especially at a time when so many of them are struggling,” said Chris Swonger, the group’s president and CEO.
But the council said it’s urging the FDA to update its guidance and let distillers use undenatured alcohol for hand sanitizer. The stimulus bill requires distillers to follow the FDA’s guidance if they want to receive the tax breaks.
The FDA has waived dozens of regulations in recent weeks to boost production of key medical supplies, including coronavirus tests, ventilators, gloves and hand sanitizers.
Under the latest FDA guidelines, regulators maintain standards for alcohol, requiring new producers to use alcohol that meets federal or international standards for use in either drugs or food products.
The regulatory hurdles are especially frustrating for Midwest ethanol producers who are facing plunging fuel demand and a petroleum fight between Saudi Arabia and Russia that caused prices to plummet. The factors are forcing more plants to curtail production and close.
For ethanol producers relaxed rules, including a requirement of the hard-to-acquire denaturant, would allow them to step in and help in a national emergency.
“If we could get the FDA to say yes you can use the beverage grade and for the duration of this emergency at least for some point in time here for the next two weeks you can waive the denaturant we would literally have millions of gallons of hand sanitizer available within a matter of days,” said Monte Shaw, CEO of Iowa Renewable Fuels Association, an ethanol trade group. “Every one of our plants has gotten contacted by people who want this stuff and we can’t send it to them.”
Andrew Vrbas owner of Pacha Soap, a boutique soap shop in Hastings, Nebraska, had just finished renovating a 100,000-square-foot former bread factory as a project to boost the community. Now, he’s preparing to set up hand sanitizer production there to supply to hospitals. He’s received calls from hospitals in Nebraska, Florida and New York City seeking hand sanitizer.
“We are literally three miles from a plant that has as much ethanol as you could imagine,” he said. “We’re sitting on millions of gallons of alcohol. If we could rally the federal government to say look if you just let us work with local ethanol producers we have the expertise, we have the ability to provide hand sanitizer to hospitals not only in Nebraska but all across the country that are just reaching out through my network saying if you could send us hand sanitizer, we’re out.”

A Coffee Drinker’s Guide To Detroit
What is left to say about Detroit? By now, you’ll have heard the boom and bust stories, the tales of failure and recovery. It’s old (and frankly rather boring) news—let’s just agree that Detroit is back.
Instead, let’s talk about how cool Detroit is. It has famous sons and daughters, from superstars like Madonna and Eminem to, well, Kid Rock. It’s the home of Motown, the birthplace of techno, and the den of oft-beleaguered Tigers and Lions.
And Detroit’s coffee scene is booming. Brand new cafes open seemingly every week, in monied suburbs and trendy urban neighborhoods. Detroit’s sprawling size—San Francisco, Manhattan, and Boston could all fit within the city’s 139 square miles—means there’s plenty of scope for new businesses to begin, expand and grow.
Here are ten of the best, both new and established.

The Red Hook Detroit
Originally based in the suburb of Ferndale, The Red Hook has since expanded to Detroit proper with this charming neighborhood space. The rotating roaster lineup is a mixture of star coffee names such as Parlor Coffee and Stumptown Coffee Roasters, as well as more local representation from Astro Coffee, all made via batch brew, Hario V60, or a white La Marzocco FB80.
In-house baked goods round out the menu, while plants and colorful murals make the cafe feel lively and welcoming. Its location in the heart of West Village makes it a local favorite, as well as a perfect spot for dog-watching if my time spent there is any indication.
The Red Hook is located at 8025 Agnes St, Detroit. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  Populace Coffee
To downtown now, and Populace’s lobby cafe inside The Siren Hotel on Broadway. I’ve written about this space before, and it bears repeating that the regal opulence of the interior is a sight to see. Heavy curtains, antique furniture, and just so much marble make sitting in the lobby and drinking a latte a distinctly fancy experience.
Populace roasts out of Bay City, Michigan, where its original cafe also resides, but this expansion to Detroit is another sign that the city’s coffee scene is flourishing, and still welcoming new players.
Populace Coffee is located at 2114, 1509 Broadway St, Detroit. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  Ashe Supply Company
On the same block of Broadway, a couple of buildings up from Populace, sits Ashe Supply Company, a self-styled “Lifestyle Brand” that combines clothing, artwork, prints, and coffee. Started by two Detroit natives, the cafe features industrial-chic interior design, with a curved bar clad in wood, hand-written signs, and pieces of Detroit ephemera dotted around.
Part of the space is dedicated to coffee roasting, while the rest is filled with community tables and cozy nooks, from which to gaze through the big glass windows at the comings and goings from the Detroit Opera House across the street.
Ashe Supply Company is located at 1555 Broadway St, Detroit. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  Dessert Oasis Coffee Roasters
Another downtown expansion for another Detroit suburb stalwart, Dessert Oasis opened this second location after beginning life 26 miles north in Rochester.
The downtown space is big and softly lit, with high ceilings, exposed ductwork and light fixtures—in fact, if it feels a bit like a music venue then that’s because it sort of is. Dessert Oasis started life as a dessert- and music-focused cafe, before adjusting its focus to include more of the coffee side of the business.
The cafes still host regular gigs, with both local and national acts passing through most weekends.
The big octagonal bar sits in the middle of the space, featuring a pour-over station and Slayer espresso machine, as well as a refrigerated display case for all the house-made cakes (dessert is in the name, after all).
Dessert Oasis Coffee Roasters is located at 1220 Griswold St, Detroit. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
  Astro Coffee
Started by a couple who met while working at Monmouth Coffee Company in London, Astro is regarded by many as the center of Detroit’s coffee scene. Since 2011, Astro has offered a distinctive take on specialty coffee alongside an expansive menu of house-made goodies (plus they make their own nut milk, always a bonus).
A rotating selection of US and international guest coffee is available (Heart Roasters from Oregon and Bonanza Coffee Roasters from Germany are two recent offerings), in addition to Astro’s own roasting program, which they set up just last year.
The cafe itself is cozy and welcoming, with mural-covered chalkboard walls, plenty of seating, and a busy, community-minded feel.
Astro Coffee is located at 2124 Michigan Ave, Detroit. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  Lucky Detroit
A brand new cafe above a barbershop a block down from Astro on Michigan Ave, Lucky has the feel of a laid-back saloon. Interior design is big on dark wood, exposed brick and plenty of antiques (not to mention a moose head on one wall), and a huge three-part mirror behind the reclaimed butcher-block bar.
A La Marzocco Linea Mini serves espresso drinks, while manual and batch brews are also available, all made with coffee from Populace. Lucky is the ideal place to grab a coffee, relax on a comfy sofa while gazing upon the puzzled visage of a flag-draped moose, and await your turn in the barber’s chair.
Lucky Detroit is located at 2000 Michigan Ave, 2nd Floor, Detroit. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
  Anthology Coffee
Previously located within the Pony Ride business incubator in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood, Anthology’s roastery and cafe has been a Detroit favorite since 2012. The new space at the Eastern Market retains an open plan and communal feel, with the roastery on one side and a semi-floating coffee bar featuring a striking Mahlkönig EKK43 grinder and full Modbar system on the other. Everything is arranged to give the customer maximum interaction with their coffee as it is roasted and brewed.
Anthology Coffee is located at 1948 Division St, Detroit. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
  Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company
Another of Detroit’s coffee elders, Great Lakes Coffee has been wholesale roasting since 1994 and serving coffee at its flagship location on Woodward Ave in Midtown since 2012. A big, light-filled space, utilizing wood reclaimed from two demolished Hamtramck houses, Great Lakes combines a full coffee service with an extensive alcohol menu and inventive food lineup.
One part of the enormous bar features a La Marzocco GB5, Mazzer grinders, and a Hario V60 pour-over station for all your coffee needs, while another hosts a rotating selection of wines, draught beers, and specialty cocktails. It’s a harmonious blend, keeping the communal tables and bar stools that fill out the rest of the space in constant demand.
Great Lakes Coffee has multiple locations around Detroit. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  Cairo Coffee
On the outskirts of the bustling Eastern Market, tucked discreetly at the back of a retail shop, sits Cairo Coffee, a multi-roaster cafe anchored by North Carolina’s Counter Culture. Whether you happen upon it by chance or hear about it through word of mouth, visiting Cairo feels like visiting the kitchen of an old friend who just happens to have made a pot of coffee.
The cafe might be small, with space for just a few tables, but the coffee experience is taken very seriously, with a La Marzocco GS3 and Mazzer Major taking up most of the counter, and rotating guest coffees supplementing the ever-present Counter Culture (most recently Máquina Coffee Roasters from Pennsylvania).
In a nod to community engagement, the cafe also hosts the Library of Cairo, encouraging visitors to borrow (and hopefully return) a variety of books from the shelves below the counter.
Cairo Coffee is located at 2712 Riopelle St, Detroit. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  Bikes & Coffee
Another Detroit coffee newbie, having only opened in late October and located across Trumbull Ave from Wayne State University’s athletic complex, Bikes & Coffee focuses on, well, you can probably guess. The bar, big and rectangular, sits in the middle of the space, while the walls showcase bicycle paraphernalia for sale and the back of the space houses the already busy repair shop.
Another multi-roaster setup, Bikes & Coffee features local heroes Anthology as well as Hyperion from down the road in Ypsilanti and, fittingly, bicycle-themed Legal Speed from California.
There seems to be a natural intersection between bicycle people and coffee people, making it the perfect niche for Bikes & Coffee to exploit.
Bikes & Coffee is located at 1521 Putnam St, Detroit. Visit there official website and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

Incredible west-side location within walking distance of parks, shops, and restaurants! This unique home is set back from the road and offers two driveways - from both Dexter and Barber - for your privacy and convenience. The dramatic entry doubles as a display space highlighted by a wall of windows and a gas fireplace. This opens to the formal living room and into the remodeled eat-in kitchen with tons of workspace and a modern tile backsplash. From the dining space you can exit out to the fenced yard, which is perfect for summer grilling and entertaining family and friends. Each floor of the home offers two bedrooms and a full bathroom, making a total of six bedrooms and three bathrooms over three separate floors. This may be ideal for frequent guests or in-law/au pair suites. The walkout lower level also has a finished recreation space that can be used as a family room or office. The fenced backyard offers room for a garden - bring your green thumb! There is also plenty of room out front for sports and landscaping. The 2-car attached garage is heated and provides deck and yard access. Utilize public transportation or you're just a short drive to the highway for commuting. Walk to Vets Park and Dolph Nature Area!

Hanging at the barbershop while the man gets a shape up before we continue on to Tucson for our holiday travels. He got a beard trim and a haircut, and I got to sketch a few scenes from around the shop. As a lady, I'm so used to seeing self care/grooming rituals happen in salons and spas, but it's interesting to see this space where men can indulge and relax while getting a little attention. It's interesting to watch someone watch themselves being cared for. Maybe it's because I'm a lady, and also only get like 1mm of hair trimmed every time I go to the salon, but dang if it ain't cool to see how transformed dudes look when they go to the barber. It's amazing what some clean lines and a razor can do. (at Taylor & Colt Ann Arbor) https://www.instagram.com/p/BroJRJql7Mu/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=utvsinf22h04

National Geographic Travel Names the Best Small Cities in the U.S.
Tumblr media
WASHINGTON/ Jan. 16, 2018 (STL.NEWS) — National Geographic Traveler, the world’s most widely read travel magazine, today unveiled its 29 “Cities on the Rise” based on both a unique set of metrics as well as expert picks from its editors. To identify these rising small cities, Traveler worked with global destination branding advisors Resonance Consultancy in developing a Small Cities Index, a survey that drew from statistics and social media mentions to determine which cities rank highest in a variety of distinctive, fun categories including green spaces, coffee shops, live music and even Instagrammable moments. The results are in the February/March 2018 issue of Traveler magazine, available now on newsstands and online at www.natgeo.com/bestsmallcities.
“At Traveler we’re passionate about tales of urban renewal, about communities that have collaborated to improve their main streets, about smart cities that have pursued development policies that produce happiness. In this article, we report on authentic small cities that each embody a surprising superlative,” says George Stone, National Geographic Traveler editor in chief. “Happy places for locals are also rewarding places for travelers. Our index of small cities on the rise is based on unconventional metrics that we think produce happiness: green spaces, coffee shops, breweries, music venues, Instagrammable moments and puppies!”
Traveler’s 29 Best Small Cities in the U.S. are categorized by 10 key superlatives that influence both residents and visitors alike. Here’s the 10 categories and related features the index factored in: •Most Hipster Friendly (coffee shops, tattoo parlors, record shops, vintage stores) •Musically Grooviest (music venues, live music, instrument stores) •Most Instagrammed (hashtags) •Most Artsy (art galleries, art supply stores, art schools) •Best Groomed (barber shops, hair salons, hair removal services, cosmetic dentists) •Meatiest (butchers, delis, steakhouses) •Most Dog Friendly (pet sitting, pet stores, pet groomers, dog friendly restaurants) •Sudsiest (breweries) •Most Caffeinated (coffee shops) •Greenest (parks)
The results in each of these areas were then broken down by population sizes: 40,000-100,000, 100,000-200,000, and 200,000-600,000. Through Resonance Consultancy’s algorithm, Traveler surfaced the cities that ranked the highest for each population size and identified “trending” cities that didn’t top the list this year, but look to be climbing their way up. The Small Cities Index is based on Resonance Consultancy’s World’s Best Cities program, which is housed on BestCities.org and features a “Choose Your Perfect City” tool based on this data, as well as extensive city profiles on their top 100 cities.
“Every city is unique,” says Resonance Consultancy President Chris Fair. “Our approach to analyzing millions of consumer-generated ratings and reviews to create indexes such as these is an innovative new approach to revealing the characteristics that differentiate one place from another. We’re excited to be working with National Geographic to share this data and its insights with travelers around the world.”
The 29 Best Small Cities are: •Albuquerque, New Mexico (Sudsiest) •Anchorage, Alaska (Trending- Most Caffeinated) •Ann Arbor, Michigan (Greenest) •Annapolis, Maryland (Trending- Dog Friendly) •Asheville, North Carolina (Most Artsy, Sudsiest) •Baton Rouge, Louisiana (Best Groomed) •Boulder, Colorado (Hipster Friendly, Musically Grooviest, Most Caffeinated, Sudsiest) •Charleston, South Carolina (Most Instagrammed, Most Artsy) •Columbia, South Carolina (Best Groomed, Meatiest) •Greenville, South Carolina (Meatiest) •Hagerstown, Maryland (Best Groomed) •Healdsburg, California (Trending- Greenest) •Hickory, North Carolina (Hipster Friendly) •Honolulu, Hawaii (Musically Grooviest, Most Instagrammed, Most Artsy) •Kansas City, Missouri (Trending- Most Artsy) •Lakeland, Florida (Most Dog Friendly) •Louisville, Kentucky (Trending- Meatiest) •Madison, Wisconsin (Greenest) •New Orleans, Louisiana (Trending- Hipster Friendly) •Newport, Rhode Island (Trending- Best Groomed) •Olympia, Washington (Most Caffeinated, Greenest) •Omaha, Nebraska (Trending- Musically Grooviest) •Pensacola, Florida (Most Dog Friendly) •Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (Trending- Sudsiest) •Portland, Maine (Most Instagrammed) •Rapid City, South Dakota (Trending- Most Instagrammed) •Reno, Nevada (Meatiest, Most Dog Friendly) •Santa Cruz, California (Musically Grooviest) •Spokane, Washington (Hipster Friendly, Most Caffeinated)
