WIZKID - THE ULTIMATE ESCAPE
Tumblr media
By: Engr. Nego THE EARLY LIFE AND STRUGGLES OF WIZKID IN THE SLUMS OF LAGOS Wizkid, also known as Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who has taken the music industry by storm. With his unique sound and infectious beats, he has captured the hearts of millions of fans around the world. But before he became a global sensation, Wizkid had to overcome numerous struggles in his early life, growing up in the slums of Lagos.   Born on July 16, 1990, in Surulere, a densely populated area in Lagos, Wizkid was the last of six children. His parents, both of whom were Christians, were not well-off and struggled to make ends meet. Wizkid's father, who was a drummer, encouraged his son's interest in music from a young age. However, his mother, a teacher, wanted him to focus on his education.   Growing up in the slums of Lagos was not easy for Wizkid. The area was plagued with poverty, crime, and violence. He had to navigate through the narrow and crowded streets, often witnessing drug abuse and gang activities. But amidst all the chaos, Wizkid found solace in music. He would often sing and dance with his friends, using makeshift instruments made from cans and bottles.   At the age of 11, Wizkid joined a local church choir, where he honed his singing skills. He also started writing his own songs and performing at local events. However, his parents were not supportive of his musical aspirations, and they wanted him to focus on his studies. But Wizkid's passion for music was too strong, and he continued to pursue it despite the challenges.   As he grew older, Wizkid's talent and determination caught the attention of OJB Jezreel, a renowned Nigerian record producer. OJB mentored Wizkid and helped him record his first demo, which caught the attention of Banky W, a popular Nigerian artist and CEO of Empire Mates Entertainment (EME). Banky W was impressed by Wizkid's talent and signed him to his record label in 2009.   However, Wizkid's journey to success was not without its struggles. He faced numerous rejections and setbacks, with some people dismissing him as just another kid from the slums. But Wizkid refused to let these obstacles deter him. He continued to work hard and improve his craft, determined to make a name for himself in the music industry.   In 2010, Wizkid released his debut single, "Holla at Your Boy," which became an instant hit and catapulted him to fame. The song won him the Next Rated award at the 2011 Headies Awards, and he became the youngest artist to win the award. This was just the beginning of Wizkid's rise to stardom.   Since then, Wizkid has released numerous hit songs and collaborated with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Drake, Beyoncé, and Chris Brown. He has won numerous awards and accolades, including three BET Awards and a Grammy nomination. Wizkid's success has not only brought him fame and fortune but has also inspired many young people from the slums to pursue their dreams.   Today, Wizkid is not only a successful musician but also a philanthropist. He has used his platform to give back to his community, providing scholarships to underprivileged children and supporting various charitable causes. He has also become a role model for many young people, showing them that with hard work, determination, and perseverance, anything is possible.   In conclusion, Wizkid's journey from the slums of Lagos to becoming a global superstar is a testament to his resilience and determination. Despite the challenges he faced, he never gave up on his dreams and has become an inspiration to many. Wizkid's story is a reminder that no matter where you come from, you can achieve greatness with passion, hard work, and a little bit of luck. HOW WIZKIDS LOVE FOR MUSIC HELPED HIM ESCAPE POVERTY How Wizkid's Love for Music Helped Him Escape Poverty: Wizkid, also known as Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who has taken the music industry by storm. With his unique sound and infectious beats, he has captured the hearts of millions of fans around the world. But what many people may not know is that Wizkid's journey to success was not an easy one. Growing up in the slums of Lagos, he faced numerous challenges and obstacles, but his love for music helped him escape poverty and pave the way for a brighter future.   Born in Surulere, a low-income neighborhood in Lagos, Wizkid's childhood was far from glamorous. His parents divorced when he was just 11 years old, leaving his mother to raise him and his 12 siblings on her own. Money was tight, and Wizkid often had to work odd jobs to help support his family. But amidst the struggles, he found solace in music.   At the age of 11, Wizkid joined a local church choir and discovered his passion for singing. He would often sneak out of the house to attend music rehearsals and performances, much to his mother's dismay. But she soon realized that music was Wizkid's calling and supported him in pursuing his dreams.   Despite his love for music, Wizkid's family could not afford to send him to a music school. So, he took matters into his own hands and started teaching himself how to play the drums and keyboard. He also began writing his own songs and performing at local events and talent shows. His talent and determination caught the attention of record labels, and at the age of 15, he was signed to Empire Mates Entertainment (EME).   However, Wizkid's journey to success was not without its challenges. He faced criticism and rejection from people who did not believe in his talent. But he never let that discourage him. Instead, he used it as motivation to work harder and prove his doubters wrong.   In 2010, Wizkid released his debut album, "Superstar," which became an instant hit in Nigeria and across Africa. The album's success catapulted him to stardom, and he became one of the most sought-after artists in the country. His unique blend of Afrobeats, R&B, and hip-hop, coupled with his smooth vocals and energetic performances, captured the hearts of fans worldwide.   With his rise to fame, Wizkid's financial situation also improved significantly. He was able to provide for his family and give back to his community. He started his own record label, Starboy Entertainment, and signed other talented artists, providing them with the same opportunities he had been given.   But Wizkid's success did not make him forget his roots. He often speaks about his humble beginnings and uses his platform to raise awareness about the struggles faced by people living in poverty. He also established the Wizkid Foundation, which aims to empower and uplift underprivileged children in Nigeria.   Today, Wizkid is not only a successful musician but also a global icon. He has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Drake, Beyoncé, and Chris Brown. He has won numerous awards and accolades, including three BET Awards and a Grammy nomination.   In conclusion, Wizkid's love for music has not only helped him escape poverty but also inspired millions of people around the world. His story is a testament to the power of determination, hard work, and never giving up on your dreams. Wizkid's journey from the slums of Lagos to international stardom is a true inspiration, and he continues to use his platform to make a positive impact in the world. THE RISE OF WIZKID FROM LOCAL TALENT TO INTERNATIONAL SUPERSTAR The Rise of Wizkid: From Local Talent to International Superstar: Wizkid, also known as Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who has taken the music industry by storm. From humble beginnings in the slums of Lagos, Wizkid has risen to become one of the most successful and influential artists in Africa and beyond. His journey from the streets to the top of the charts is a testament to his talent, hard work, and determination.   Born on July 16, 1990, in Surulere, a low-income neighborhood in Lagos, Wizkid grew up in a large family with twelve siblings. His parents were both Pentecostal Christians, and his father was a drummer in a local church. Wizkid's love for music was evident from a young age, and he would often join his father in church performances. However, his passion for music was not limited to gospel music, and he was also influenced by the likes of Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, and King Sunny Ade.   At the age of 11, Wizkid formed a group called the "Glorious Five" with some of his friends from the neighborhood. They would perform at local events and parties, and Wizkid's talent was quickly recognized by those around him. However, his big break came in 2009 when he was discovered by record producer OJB Jezreel, who invited him to his studio to record some tracks. This led to Wizkid's first collaboration with M.I Abaga, one of Nigeria's biggest rappers, on the song "Fast Money."   In the same year, Wizkid signed a record deal with Banky W's Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) and released his debut single "Holla at Your Boy," which became an instant hit. The song was featured on his debut album "Superstar," which was released in 2011 and received critical acclaim. Wizkid's unique blend of Afrobeats, R&B, and hip-hop, coupled with his smooth vocals and catchy lyrics, captured the hearts of music lovers not only in Nigeria but also across Africa.   With the success of his debut album, Wizkid's popularity soared, and he became a household name in Nigeria. He went on to release hit after hit, including "Don't Dull," "Pakurumo," and "Ojuelegba," which became an anthem for the people of Lagos. His collaborations with international artists such as Drake, Chris Brown, and Beyoncé further solidified his position as a global superstar.   Wizkid's rise to fame was not without its challenges. Growing up in the slums, he faced poverty, violence, and the constant struggle to make ends meet. However, he never let his circumstances hold him back, and he used his music as a means of escape. In an interview with The Guardian, Wizkid said, "Music was my only way out. I had nothing else. It was my only hope."   Today, Wizkid is not only a successful musician but also a philanthropist and a role model for many young people in Nigeria. He has used his platform to give back to his community and has been involved in various charitable initiatives, including building schools and providing scholarships for underprivileged children.   In 2016, Wizkid became the first Nigerian artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his feature on Drake's hit song "One Dance." He has also won numerous awards, including three BET Awards, three MOBO Awards, and a Grammy nomination for his collaboration with Beyoncé on the song "Brown Skin Girl."   In conclusion, Wizkid's journey from the slums of Lagos to international stardom is a true inspiration. He has broken barriers and paved the way for other African artists to gain recognition on a global scale. His music has not only entertained millions but has also given hope to those who, like him, come from humble beginnings. He said he had high hopes for Wizkid during his early days as an up-and-coming artist when he was signed to Banky W’s EME Records. Mr P appeared on the latest episode of The 77 Podcast alongside his partner, Paul. He said he told the reporters that Wizkid was going to dominate the music industry in the near future. Mr P said, “We were never the type of artist that looked down on anybody. If you remember, there was a video that went viral where it was P-Square concert and Wizkid was opening for us. So, they kept on interviewing only P-Square and we were like, okay, guys, hold on. What about him? They said… I said no, this guy is going to take over tomorrow.” Wizkid is currently the most streamed African artist on Spotify, with over four billion streams.
