According to UNESCO, the role of education is twofold: to empower individuals “to become active participants in the transformation of their societies”; to enable these individuals “to live together in a world characterized by diversity and pluralism.”[1] It is in this very real sense that education functions as a bridge. By promoting certain values and attitudes it opens dialogue and fosters relationships, allowing experiences to be shared, common concerns to be communicated and mutual recognition to be reached.
This role of education in building bridges between people and places has particular resonance in the UAE, which is celebrating 2019 as a year of tolerance. The analogy is also at the heart of a growing demand for executive education programs in the Gulf region. For professionals seeking to gain a competitive advantage in international business, a broad knowledge base and flexible skill set is essential. In traditional management education, ‘bridge building’ has become a specialized business strategy. The globalized nature of business environments means that individuals must now be able to cross “the cultural divide” through effective, contextualized communication techniques. With the rapid developments in technology, there is also an increasing need to overcome “the digital divide” through more advanced technical knowledge.
In response to these demands, universities have had to adopt a ‘bridge building’ approach to education. Today’s complex problems require multi-faceted solutions. Multi/inter-disciplinary frameworks that allow students to supplement traditional skills with new tools have become the norm. It is in line with this model, for example, that universities are integrating digital business strategies into their established curricula.
In recent years, however, the challenges facing business professionals have become increasingly complex. The existing educational framework appears outmoded and ineffective because it no longer reflects the reality facing students in the 21st century. In August 2017, the Harvard Business Review released an issue entitled “The Truth about Globalization”, which details a retreat from a global, international outlook into localized markets and mentalities.[2] To navigate this new environment, a new set of skills is required. Basic knowledge of the global business world, an ability to bridge cultural boundaries, is no longer a sufficient response to today’s changing international climate. There is now a need for a deeper understanding of the complexities and contradictions of globalization, an awareness that bridges that bring proximity can also introduce distance and separation.
The same is true of the digital divide. The growing number of mental health complaints among students (discussed in the March edition of this magazine) suggests that the digital skills gap is more complex than first believed. Research now shows that technology and social media promote feelings of isolation and anxiety. In making the world more connected these platforms also cuts individuals adrift. As a bridge, they bring people together while also keeping them apart. Filling the digital skills gap is therefore no longer a simple question of acquiring new technical knowledge. What employers require, paradoxically, are improved social skills: versatility, social intelligence, self-awareness. With privacy concerns, data security and disinformation threats now the top corporate priorities, companies need individuals to analyze, and not just consume, technological data. Digital competences must come hand in hand with an ability to adopt a critical, disengaged position.
To respond to these issues, the education sector needs to re-think how it employs the concept of a bridge in delivering knowledge. In light of the demands now placed on professionals, the traditional inter-disciplinary approach appears limited. In practice, the convergence of multiple viewpoints can lead to a narrowing of perspectives, as each discipline becomes more rooted in a particularized area of expertise. This model connects different fields but, in doing so, it also keeps them separate. How, then, can we adapt the notion of the bridge to address these challenges?
In Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, where the motto is “a bridge between civilizations”, a new direction becomes possible. SUAD is unique in that it embodies the very ideals it represents. As a bridge between countries and cultures, it creates mobility and proximity between places and people. As a meeting point between Paris and Abu Dhabi, it connects a long-standing tradition in academic achievement with a commitment to innovation and excellence.
In SUAD, tolerance is not just an idea but an every-day reality. With a student body spanning over 80 nationalities, it is a symbol of the UAE’s commitment to diversity and inter-cultural exchange. In this very practical sense, SUAD offers a new way of defining the role of education in the 21st century. By putting principles into practice, it forces us to re-think the bridge not as something connecting separate locations, but as the point where alternative perspective are transformed into a single collective.
For these reasons, SUAD provides a hub for innovation in research and teaching practice. As a faculty member, I have spent the last two years exploring the possibilities of adapting curricula and methodology in line with a new concept of ‘bridge building’. In my research, I am developing an alternative form of disciplinary exchange that moves beyond the limitations of the traditional approach.
Rather than offer different modules in isolation (mutualisé), this new approach maximizes the potential of the classroom as a space where separate fields directly overlap (à la croisée). The idea is not just to bridge fields that remain at a distance (“inter-disciplinarity”) but to allow subjects to directly converge, in such a way that they are taught simultaneously (what I term “infra-disciplinarity”). At a practical level, traditional curricula are not simply supplemented with alternative approaches; instead, new tools and methods are acquired on the basis of pre-established knowledge.
I am currently implementing this model in an executive education program entitled “Business for English, English for Business”. Building on the ‘dual’ status of the Bachelors degree in Applied Foreign Languages, the course combines knowledge in business related subjects (Marketing, Economics, Finance, etc) with the practical application of linguistic tools. Unlike other ‘mixed majors’, however, these areas are not studied separately but simultaneously, as two distinct but inter-connected perspectives. First, traditional business knowledge is used to develop more effective communication skills; next, these models of analysis allow for a more rigorous approach to business practices and a more acute level of technological awareness. In the process of deepening their knowledge, students acquire the tools needed to confront the real problems now facing professionals.
For this digitally engaged, multi-tasking generation, the goal is not simply to look at a problem from different perspectives but to recognize how these different perspectives themselves overlap. This ability to shift quickly between alternative viewpoints creates a heightened level of critical (dis)engagement and, ultimately, a creative mindset more attune to the trends and opportunities that exist in the global economy. For this new generation of bridge builders, uncertainty becomes the source of possibility and the fear associated with risk is replaced by a courage to adapt, experiment and innovate. Only this type of entrepreneurial spirit, one that grasps the true complexities of building bridges, can rise to meet the challenges of today.

Emerging Job Opportunities Within a Disruptive UAE Economic Landscape
According to AT Kearney, GCC’s e-commerce market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 30.2 percent to $19.8 billion by 2020 from $5.3 billion in 2015. UAE and Saudi Arabia remain the key markets and are expected to cumulatively contribute over 80 percent of total e-commerce transactions by 2020.
Since the dip in oil prices, the GCC governments have started looking at private sector involvement as an alternative to sustain health-care funding and are keenly promoting PPPs, rolling out mandatory insurance coverage and encouraging private players to set up facilities. Likewise, regional governments have been working incessantly, in collaboration with the private players, to boost key economic sectors such as healthcare, education, transportation and logistics (T&L), e-commerce, and food and beverages (F&B), which holds necessary potential and promise for potential investors in this region.
Over the past decade, the GCC sovereigns have undergone major economic transformations with an aim to diversify their oil-dependent economies. Historically, the GCC nations have been able to self-fund their economic development but foreign investments have become imperative in diversifying their revenue base, especially in the wake of the low oil price scenario.

“GCC governments can lead by example through championing the digitization of public institutions. GCC governments should partner with technology players, educational institutions, and the corporate sector to boost supply and create demand in the digital job market”.
Across the region, high-skilled employment stands at 21%, on average, while middle-skilled roles account for 66% of all formal sector jobs, broadly in line with the world average. The United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, as well as Egypt and Jordan, lead the way in the local availability of high-skilled jobs. Some of the most common types of high-skilled employment in the MENA region include commercial bankers, corporate finance specialists and accountants, schoolteachers and academics, engineers, quality assurance professionals and information technology consultants, according to data from LinkedIn.
Similarly, the Robert Half study predicts that the biggest beneficiary in terms of salary hike in accounting and finance industry will be Tax Directors, getting 6.5 percent pay hike, followed by FP&A manager at 5.1 percent, Financial Controller at 4.9 percent, and Tax Manager 4.7 percent.
Opportunities are in store for the following jobs within Finance Planning & Accounting [FP&A] –
CFOs, financial Controllers/accountants, finance directors/managers, financial planning and analysis specialists in the accounts and finance sector. A combination of LinkedIn’s data (figure 10) and UNESCO’s statistics, provides a unique view of the region’s high- and medium-skilled white-collar workforce Across the GCC region, there is a distinct tendency towards a select number of specializations, resulting in a somewhat less diversified talent pool compared to other regions, as measured by the Forum’s Human Capital Index . Nearly a third of LinkedIn’s tertiary-educated members in the region hold Business, Administration, and Law degrees, with a particular emphasis on qualifications in accounting, banking and finance, marketing and business management. Likewise, the data also reveals the availability of a significant pool of talent focused broadly on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), with nearly half of LinkedIn’s tertiary-educated members in the region holding such degrees.
A worrying factor for 85 percent CFOs is about losing top financial professionals to other job opportunities in the year ahead. On an average, employers predict that salaries for accounting and finance professionals will rise by 5.8 percent. Annual bonuses are being awarded on the basis of personal performance, and they average one to two months’ salary. According to market reports, the strongest demand is for mid-level finance professionals with five to seven years’ experience.
The proposed introduction of value added tax [VAT] in 2018 and potential changes to corporate tax will drive demand for Tax Specialists and Management Accountants in the lead-up to their introduction and after, creating a stronger demand for finance professionals who can help organization’s deal with the changes new tax regimes. Further, The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has officially opened registration for individuals interested in working as “tax agents”.
A professional desiring to become a “Tax Agent” in UAE must be of good conduct and behavior, never should have been convicted of a crime or misdemeanor prejudicial to honor or honesty, irrespective of whether or not he may have been rehabilitated. He/she must hold a certified Bachelor or Master degree in Tax, Accounting or Law from a recognized educational institution. UAE: In the era of the internet of things, where technology is fast changing the way people work, live and spend leisure time, being fluent in computer languages and data sciences is turning into an essential skill. Among UAE-based employers, 88 per cent say they need employees with analytics skills, itself an 88 per growth from 47 per cent of employers in 2014, according to the Workforce 2020 report by Oxford Economics and SAP SE data. The UAE aims to become the innovation benchmark for smart cities worldwide. A Huawei and Navigant report that studied the strategy and execution of smart city campaigns in the region declared Dubai the Middle East’s leading smart city due to its high-tech infrastructure and implementation of several smart initiatives. As the UAE drives digital transformation and becomes a smart hub, careers in coding and analytics will continue to gain importance, says Hichem Maya, Head of Industries — Middle East and North Africa at SAP. “Coding and analytics are particularly useful in rapidly digitising industry verticals such as the government and public sector, banking and finance, healthcare, retail and sport. “While industry analysts estimate that two-thirds of careers of the future do not yet exist, we do know that coding and analytics provide the critical thinking and collaboration experience that UAE employers value. SAP is dedicated to hiring talented coders.” Other careers will depend on big data. The proliferation of the internet means a lot of information about users is now being collected. The correct analysis of this data can serve to benefit almost any organisation, including governmental entities, says Dr Mohammad Watfa, Associate Dean of Research, Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences, University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD). “In the UAE, big data is now omnipresent, and the technologies to collect and store it are expanding day after day, from Salik tags to online shopping trends. The problem is that good analysis can be difficult. Selecting which problems can be solved, then picking which are useful and which ones we can gain substantial value and understanding from requires expertise. Data analysts in the UAE are rare, so there is high demand for such skills.”

UAE universities are refining their major offerings in computer science and IT to address this new demand. UOWD’s computer sciences undergraduate and postgraduate programmes will offer two new subjects — big data analysis and data mining techniques — as electives. The university will introduce advanced data analysis as a new masters/PhD subject. It teaches students to perform advanced diagnostics using MATLAB, R, BUGS/JAGS and other tools, as well as writing independent code. Another programme on big data analysis will begin next year. The undergrad programme at Heriot-Watt University (HWU) Dubai includes subjects on big data management, computer security and games programming. A new master’s in data science will be introduced in September to meet demand from working professionals. “Our graduates find employment in a broad range of sectors in the UAE and abroad,” says Stephen Gill, Academic Head, School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, HWU Dubai Campus. “These include finance, banking, logistics, computing, health and energy. I foresee significant demand for people that can design, implement, and manage systems. Besides, students who start a career now in coding can easily move later into either management or areas such as security or data management.”

Several certification courses are also available in the UAE related to coding and data analysis, for business professionals in finance, marketing and IT to augment their CVs. Alphin Edgar D’cruz, a 20-year-old bachelor of computer science student at University of Wollongong, is passionate about designing programs and wants to build a career in the field. “Using data to simplify everyday life has always been an intriguing topic to me and learning about coding and algorithms feels like a thrilling journey towards the future of smart cities. In our university, we learn advanced programming, algorithms, memory management and networking concepts both theoretically and practically.” When applying for a driving license and a blue Nol card, D’cruz was asked to submit a variety of documents and fill up long forms. While doing so, he wondered how easy it would be if things were automated. “Why couldn’t I just submit one piece of ID or perhaps a biometric scan and be done with it, and they pull my information off of a database? The future, I envision, does away with these hassles to make everything a seamless experience.” He foresees demand for data analysts increasing, along with the skill ceiling for the job.
