This month of 𝐅𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 marks one of my favorite celebrations here in the Philippines, "𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡" (It is not just a "Love Month").

I depicted one of my favorite trees, "Bakhaw" (in English, Mangrove). During a family trip to OMAGEICA in Santa Fe, Cebu, in 2023, I recall observing a mangrove forest. It is such a fascinating sight just looking at how large their roots are and how those mangroves can have many benefits for our marine ecosystems. To better understand their value, let's explore some FACTS AND INFO about Bakhaw and its benefits:

1. There are 54 species of true mangroves (34 major and 20 minor) worldwide and 60 mangrove associates (Tomlinson, 1996).

2. Mangroves are home not only to marine animals, but also to tree-dwelling mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds.

3. Mangroves are crucial for biodiversity and serve as natural barriers. Their standout characteristic is their carbon capture and storage ability. Like other plants, they absorb carbon dioxide, and their sediments act as carbon sinks. This makes mangroves excellent at sequestering carbon, vital in fighting climate change.

4. Mangrove wood is used for stilt houses, furniture, fences, bridges, fishing poles, canoes, rafts, and boats.

5. Mangroves possess medicinal properties including pain relief, inflammation reduction, diabetes treatment, parasite elimination, and antiseptic action. The bark, rich in tannins—chemicals found in plant cells, particularly in leaves and unripe fruit—is used in tanning to produce soft, flexible, and durable leather.

À l’origine du nom Richard Toll. Pour mettre en valeur le champ qui entoure sa résidence, le Baron Roger a amené 3 botanistes et ingénieurs dont Claude Richard, qui a créé un jardin d’essai. «C’est à Richard Toll où on a essayé l’indigo, la canne à sucre, le coton et l’arachide. Donc, il y avait des jardins d’essai. Ce sont les jardins d’essais que les wolofs des villages environnants appelaient ‘‘Tollou Richard’’. Origine du nom Richard Toll ou ‘‘Tollou Richard’’, témoin de plus de 200 ans d'histoire Mbakhana Usine vapeur C’est de là d’où est venu le nom Richard-Toll. Pendant 3 ans, le Baron Roger a été là-bas. Le château a été construit entre 1821 et 1822 ��, ajoute Amadou Bakhaw Diaw. Plus de 200 ans après, le monument est proche de s’affaisser à cause des stigmates de la nature qui a été sans pitié. C’est le cas du Brack Coly Baba Diop. «Ce que les gens ne savent pas, c’est que les anciens chefs n’étaient pas enterrés selon la tradition musulmane, de peur qu’on prélève un de leurs squelettes. Ce qui fait qu’ils étaient enterrés debout. Pour profaner la tombe, il fallait beaucoup creuser et c’était plus facile pour les populations de mettre la main sur ces gens. Beaucoup de Bracks ont été enterrés de la sorte», révèle Amadou Bakhaw Diaw, historien traditionaliste du Waalo.

Mais, il ne se passe pas un jour sans que la «Folie du Baron Roger» ne se rapproche de la disparition de la mémoire collective avec le temps. Aujourd’hui, son existence, jadis vantée, est chahutée par un abandon qui risque de l’engloutir dans les abysses de l’oubli, dans les profondeurs de l’effacement pur et simple. Il y a plus de deux siècles, ce temple était un endroit jalousé, un espace royal, un lieu où le Gouverneur du Sénégal montrait sa super puissance. La « Folie » abandonnée du Baron Roger à Richard-Toll Il y a cette forêt dense qui donne à l’endroit une dimension hautement paradisiaque, ensuite ces arbres et ces gazouillements d’oiseaux qui donnent un peu d’ombre face au diktat des rayons solaires. À droite de la route qui mène à la ville de Dagana, trône un monument aux formes de château, à l’allure d’un monument qui se distingue par sa stature imposante. Il porte fièrement les vestiges du passé colonial dans cette commune dirigée par le maire Amadou Mame Diop, actuel Président de l’Assemblée nationale. Ensuite, se dresse une zone aux atours de savane où quelques animaux passent du bon temps. Faute d’investissements, l’édifice, inauguré au début des années 1820, lors de l’occupation française, tombe lentement en décrépitude. L’usure du temps a eu raison de l’endroit qui menace ruines. Finally, another character poster for my upcoming comic, "Ang Timbangan sa Daragangan" (The Scale of A Hero). I was inspired by Barangay Sixteenth Century Philippine Culture and Society, the batik patterns for the backgrounds and his attire, and most of all, a webinar Beyond Filipiniana Season 3 from Karakoa Productions. His name is BAKHAW, meaning 'mangrove' in Bisayan language. He is a Timawa (warrior vassal and freeman), and an expert in playing Lantuy or Tolali. He likes to wear the ceremonial clothing known as Lihin-Lihin and to put Antuwanga (Hibiscus) on his hair.

FACTS:

According to the context provided in Barangay Sixteenth Century Philippine Culture and Society by a historian William Henry Scott, the Lantuy is considered one of the quieter instruments. It was traditionally played indoors during nighttime and was meant to imitate the mournful sound of a human voice through shakes and trills. This style of playing was deemed appropriate for wakes and funerals.

Banig is a traditional handwoven mat from the Philippines that is typically used as a sleeping mat or a floor mat. The weaving technique used to create the diamond pattern is known as "Amakan."

Camotes travel experiences

The first thing that I did was packing up things. Second, checked the condition of my body. Third, wore clothes that I am comfortable. After, I finished all important list for traveling. At 4:30 in the morning I force myself to go.

After an hour I reached Danao City Port to take ferry going to Camotes Island. I entered the ship and found a sit, giving a wide view of the vast sea while wondering what would be the beauty of Camotes Island is. After 2 hours finally I arrived. I went directly to the registrar, asked for the room and the map of their destination.

After that I grabbed a quick break fast, prepare myself to stroll their place. Then I arrived:

First, "Bakhaw Beach"

Then I asked some guests and they said that Bakhaw Beach is like Boracay Beach. But the sand is not fine as in Boracay Beach. Coconut trees are every where and canopy, is such a good resting place.

After snapping some pictures of the flotsam lined shore, I took a dip. Every one refuged in the shade, away from the glaring sun except for the couple of kids who played on the shore.

Second, "Tinubo Cave"

Tinubo Cave it is the main water source, one of the mysterious and wonders of the geography, an under ground natural pool. I tested the coldness and the deepness of the water. Highly appropriate and doable for swimming for non - swimmers.

Third, "Mangodlong rock resort"

I lied on the bench in the further most cottage. The one over looking the wide blue sea. The isolated rock and just connected with others through a bamboo bridge.

Fourth, "Lake Danao"

It is a water trapped and locked up with the islands. It is wide view and silent area. And also it is good for boating.

Lastly, the "Camotes Bay walk" and also known as "The Little Pins of Memory"

If you stay or walk there, you can remember all your past experiences.

"Camotes Island is a good resting place. Full of resorts and beaches. Please guize come and visit Camotes Island for you to experience their different tourist spots".

An annual Bakhaw (Mangrove) Festival is celebrated in Del Carmen, Siargao Islands, Philippines. Every July 16, the locals dance and sing the bounty of the Mangroves with marine resources, protection from natural hazards and eco-tourism industry. It is celebrated to honour our patron saint, Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

The Municipality of Del Carmen is one of the nine municipalities of the world famous tourist destination… Siargao Island. The Unique characteristic of Del Carmen is the presence of 4.465 hectares of mangrove forest, the largest contiguous mangrove cover in the Philippines.

Being part of the Siargao Islands Protected Landscapes and Seascapes Areas (SIPLAS), the Del Carmenons have their share in protecting the mangroves and preserving the biodiversity of Del Carmen and Siargao Islands.

The Annual Bakhaw Festival and the Fiesta Celebration are done in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel for all the blessings that the Del Carmenons have received. It is also an effective way of reminding the people of the importance of Mangrove, of Family, and of Faith in our lives.

For this year, the 11th Bakhaw Festival will include Municipal Wide Flea Market, Bakhaw Musical, Bakhaw Festival Dance, Nightly Music and Dance, Bakhaw Inter-Barangay Basketball Tournament, Siargao Int’l. Marathon and the Health Summit. The Health Forum is done during the Festival to promote public awareness and social responsibility in health with its lined-up activities such as Health Fair and Forum

Celebrate with us and have fun as we share you our culture and tradition and feel within our hearts this year’s Festival theme, “Katilingbanon Turismo, Nagmalamboon! Garbo nan Mga Del Carmenon.”

BACOLOD CITY – Budding filmmakers of Sagay City, Negros Occidental continue to make waves amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, featuring 10 productions in the second edition of the Margaha Film Festival.

Also known as the Sine Margaha, the festival is named after the kilometer-long shoreline of Margaha (black sand) beach of the northern Negros city.

Festival director Helen Cutillar said on Wednesday she is glad that the films’ cast and crew hurdled the challenges brought by the health crisis and came up with remarkable productions.

“They were able to produce quality films despite the challenges of strictly following Covid-19 health protocols during the shoots,” she added.

Cutillar said through the film festival, held in consonance with the Arts Month in February, Sagay promotes local arts and culture and showcases cultural mapping efforts, raising awareness of the city’s tangible and intangible cultural properties.

She acknowledged the city government, which provided each production team seed money of PHP6,000, as well as the Office of 2nd District Rep. Leo Rafael Cueva and the Film Development Council of the Philippines for supporting the Sine Margaha.

This year’s top winner is “Ang Pagsalop sang Adlaw” or “The Immersion of the Sun”, which bagged the Best Picture and seven other major and special awards, including Best Director and Best in Cinematography for Kent John Desamparado.

Produced by Bakhaw Studios and filmed in the upland barangay of Colonia Divina, it tells about the journey of the Amparo family as they bury “Inday,” which revealed more secrets that each of the family members hid for the longest time.

“I’m grateful for the support of my family and the people behind the production of the film,” Desamparado said.

The film’s other awards included Best Production Design by Nelson Emnace, Original Song by Brian Ferraro, and Best Covid-19 Health Protocol Compliance.

Amalea Gay Jontongco was awarded Best Supporting Actress while the whole cast of “Ang Pagsalop sang Adlaw” was given a Special Citation for Ensemble Performance in Acting.

Ba’Lay Production’s “Paraiso”, a mystical film about deforestation in the early 70s, was awarded second Best Picture, and Panganod Productions’ sci-fi movie “Sa Mga Kabati kag Gapamati,” third Best Picture.

“Paraiso” also took the award for Best Actress for Crystal Puying, Best Editing by Charles Hilado, and Best Trailer, while “Sa Mga Kabati kag Gapamati’s” Jonathan Limpangog was awarded Best Supporting Actor.

Other films in the 2021 Sine Margaha included “Pasitib” of PP Studios, “Yuhom” and “Makina” of Duyog Production, “Dalagan” of Lente Film Productions, “Judith” of Anggulo Films, “Save Point” of Majarleka Productions, and “Hunas” of Kumpas Production.

“Judith” received the recognition for Best Screenplay and the Nunelucio Alvarado Panublion Award, while Hunas won Best Poster and Best Actor for Alfonso Macam Jr.

The 2021 Sine Margaha panel of jury consisted of Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino’s Tito Valiente, directors Teng Mangansakan, Keith Deligero, and Arden Rod Condez, Sine Negrense festival director Tanya Lopez, broadcaster and historian Rod Florentino, and writer Kenneth Ian Rivera. (PNA)
