Listening: “Cast Away” by Béatrice Martin
Most days I’m haunted by songs, sometimes just some verses, sometimes in their fullness, looped im my head, demanding my attention constantly. The other day, it was “If it’s fear of love that keeps you out of open arms, then I will leave the lights on any trail to come, and you will find your way in any given storm.“ I don’t know why it was this one that day — or maybe I know too well — but maybe it had been too long since I had listened to Coeur de Pirate.
Anyway, this song speaks to my heart. As if she is singing for me specifically. To me, it’s a a song about love, about the love that we have for the women who are hurt and aching and struggling and that we still love, and about the women who still love me even though I’m struggling and drowning and hurting.
Cast away the shadows of your heart
If you’re always aiming for a better part
In this play that punctuates your life, your goals
You think you know, you’re down below
And you’ve kept your distances from me
Carried on with all your fears that set you free
But at night you change into the darkest swan
With all its fears, you’ve come undone
My heart is full of shadows — how could it not be, the world being what it is — but if it is to get any better, I have to go beyond, I can’t just settle and sit with my sadness, with the darkness inside. I’m pretending that I’m doing okay, that I’m good, most of the time, putting on a play. I push my friends, those who care, away, because I’m scared they’ll be ashamed, that they’ll get hurt too, that they’ll come to hate me. Better to burn the bridges myself, first. And no matter how much I deny being hurt and being down, the truth is still the same.
And I don’t know if you’ve been hurt before
And all the scars you bare are from a previous war
But if it’s fear of love that keeps you out of open arms
Then I will leave the lights on any trail to come
And you will find your way in any given storm
Self-explanatory, isn’t it? Love is about leaving the lights on, so the absent and lost ones can always find their way back home, even if the night has come and the wind is blowing. You can’t force love, you can’t force acceptance of love. Love is a quiet form of hope. It’s staying there and staying still and so much waiting. We can’t fight each other’s battles. We can’t save each other, other than by being there, and keeping the lights on, and not being too mad that it took so long. Love is knowing that the road is long and the way is dark. Love is the fact that there is a home at the end of the storm.
I remember walking you to hell
When you asked the man for one last mission bell
And I followed until the darkness came
I felt so lost, you were my cause
So I’ll ask again and again
Why the courage left when you numbed the pain
Was I ever part of what you called your plan?
I felt so lost that I left your cause
Again, we can’t fight each other’s battles. We can’t even hope to understand what these battles are for each other. We can only support each other while we are fighting our own. And our battles don’t necessarily have to do with how loved we are; we can have all the love of the world and still be on our way to hell. It doesn’t mean that love is useless or ineffective, just that it doesn’t have to do with our hardships. Love doesn’t conquer all. Love is what is left once you’re done crossing hell.
And I don’t know if you’ve been hurt before
And all the scars you bare are from a previous war
But if it’s fear of love that keeps you out of open arms
Then I will leave the lights on any trail to come
And you will find your way in any given storm
And you will find your way in any given storm
Note that this is not about romantic love, much more about love between family and friends. Romantic love should be like this too, but given how men are, if you’re a woman attracted to them, don’t expect love from men. They won’t remember to leave the lights on. They won’t wait for you at the end of the storm. They’ll be the hell.
