How does the mafia work?
MAFIA SPECIAL 1. We look at the real way the Italian mob operates, the symbiotic state-mafia relationship and its fund redistribution network. We will also meet Europe’s most corrupt police force.
'In an anarcho-capitalist society, who stops the mafia?' asked an online forum. This question will help us untangle some of the complexities of the mob as it addresses some of the central themes involved: the symbiotic state-mafia relationship and its fund redistribution network.
The birth of both Italy and the mafia. A historical coincidence? The ‘who stops the mafia?’ question is basically an extension of an argument constantly levelled at libertarians which posits that any non-state run society would be immediately overtaken by rampaging warlords. Some observers have noted that the mafia and the state are virtually the exact same thing. Where the state exists, the mafia flourishes. It’s certainly no coincidence that the rise of the mob took place over the precise period that statism expanded. In Italy, the mafia went from small-scale localized blood feuds in Sicily to large-scale racketeering when Garibaldi unified the various kingdoms of the region to form the country of Italy in 1861. As one historian astutely put it, the mafia couldn’t afford to be on the losing side. Put another way, the mafia goes where the money is.
Various forms of mafia have been completely misrepresented in popular culture. In fact, before proceeding it might be a good opportunity to take a closer look at how different types of mob behaviour breakdown and put rest to a few ideas which are complete fantasy.
The favours bank. First off, Italy, like most countries, suffers from a type of non-meritocratic way of doing business, often based on family, influence peddling or mutual back scratching. The late Tom Wolfe in Bonfire of the Vanities described the New York equivalent as ‘the favours bank’. Wolfe, if memory serves me well, portrayed high-powered NYC attorneys using their influence in pursuit of personal objectives. This type of behaviour, it could be argued, is merely a synonym of doing business. Who hasn’t had to resort to asking favours or influence from others as we endeavour to promote our own enterprises?
Undercutting the state. On a local level in Italy this type of influence is often thought of as ‘community’. Most southern villages still have patriarchal figures who will bail out needy individuals or families when, for example, someone loses their job or runs into financial hardships. This age old tradition continues mainly because locals have more faith in fellow-community members than in state welfare itself and its notoriously miserly benefits system. Its longevity is also partly due to the fact that the mafia can undercut state prices and offers protection and contract enforcement at more ‘competitive’ rates.
Mob feuding. The next level, which could be labelled ‘inter-family or mob feuding’ (think Godfather films and horse’s heads), certainly exists but, in reality, is over-played and over-publicised. In fact, when one of the characters from the Coppola film states, ‘I don’t like blood, it’s bad for business’ he was summing up the modern mafia ethos quite succinctly. Occasionally mob fighting does spill out onto the sidewalks, as it did in Calabria some years ago, but as one observer put it, the mob only gets violent when they can’t make ‘legitimate easy money’ elsewhere. With the state, they almost always can.
How the mafia really works. The real mafia is not just ‘la famiglia’ in tiny southern villages. It is something totally different. It is a huge corporate enterprise said to contribute 10% to 20% of Italy’s GDP. The typical modern day mobster is a suited business exec virtually indistinguishable from his political cronies. The typical modern mafia scam, par excellence, is rigging public tenders. It’s the oldest trick in the book. The government, in the name of transparency, is forced to put all public work or projects (whose remuneration is over €10,000 - last time I checked) out to public tender. The whole thing is a farce. Most of the ‘competing’ companies are bogus fronts for the mafia.
The most corrupt police force in Europe. The state is completely complicit. The Guardia di Finanza, Italy’s version of the Fraud Squad is openly known to be the most corrupt police corp in Europe. Local business live in fear of them and every single legitimate business in the area where I live has had to pay them off. (Their standard fare is a hefty ‘present’ of firm’s goods. A local glove maker I know had to hand over several hundred gloves as a payment for some supposed fiscal discrepancy. The Guardia di Finanza families eat for budget price in restaurants and they drink their expressos free in local bars.)
The costs. The standard practice is that the money from these public tenders gets awarded to mafia run firms. The public work begins. Then the company folds. This normally occurs after fellow mob members have pocketed huge consultancy fees. The damage to the economy is massive as the entire country is crippled under the weight of literally thousands of taxes to fund this. The environmental consequences are worse still. The entire country is littered with unfinished buildings and projects. Milan’s recent World Exposition, and its myriads of mobster scams, destroyed acres of park land. The supporters claimed that it invigorated the local economy but (as we have shown elsewhere) it came at a cost of €3000 a head per Italian. Naples has nine unfinished hospital projects all paid for with public taxes.
The state capitalism mafia model. Now that we have some idea about how the mob works, it makes the original question far easier to answer: How could an anarcho-capitalist society stop the mafia? Simple. No state – no state mafia. The rise of a robust, entrenched mafia came about because the mob simply used the state as their business model. The backbone is the huge wealth collection and redistribution system. In the case of the state, it’s called ‘taxes’, in the case of the mafia, it’s called ‘il pizzo’ or what ETA used to refer to as the ‘revolutionary tax’ in the Basque country. The mafia takes its cue from state capitalism - the idea that the state should safeguard large-scale industries from failure by propping them up or funnelling cash through them. Think US bank bail-outs. Boeing couldn’t stand up to real free-market capitalist competition without going bankrupt. Neither could so many weapons manufacturers, big pharma companies, tech giants, aero-industry, etc. Neither can Alitalia, the Italian state run airline company that for decades has haemorrhaged billions of tax payer’s money while strengthening and enriching its higher management – basically another mafia. It’s a blatant scam that most gullible tax contributors support, but few of them understand its messy, multi-layered complexities or who is hidden behind. Put another way, honest yet ignorant working folk are directly responsible – they fund it after all.
So bad they even go to jail. The same applies to almost every other sector of the government-mob nexus. State capitalism feeds the mafia. In my local area we have monstrous mob run industries like defence, aerospace and security giants such as Leonardo-Finmeccanica. While ostensibly producing military helicopters and fighter planes for a country that hasn’t been at war for eighty years, the conglomerate has a history littered with case after case of corruption. It’s so bad that people have even been jailed… and that takes some doing in Italy.
In an anarcho-capitalist society there would be no state and therefore no massive re-distribution of state funds to bad actors. When trade and business are voluntary, companies and individuals sell goods and services that are of far greater social utility. Finmeccanica’s cheapest chopper trades at €11 million. Who the hell are you going to sell that to in an ancap society? Are you going to hop on a plane to Italy aboard one of the state’s mafia funding fleet, or take the honest, cheaper free market option? Exactly. Hence the honest shift towards independent and volantaryist communities using essentially anarchist systems such as the internet, sharing apps, cryptocurrencies, blockchains and any number of other new models. Systems which allow freedom to choose how we spend the fruits of our labour. The dinosaurs have got their days numbered.

The 22 Best Jobs That Can Be Done Remotely
If you’re looking for jobs that can be done remotely, then this list is for you.
We’re going to look at the best work from home jobs and remote jobs available right now, and what it takes to get them.
Here’s what you’re going to learn:
What are the best jobs that can be done remotely? (also known as location independent jobs)
How much do these jobs pay?
What type of companies offer these positions?
Let’s get started…
Location Independent Jobs: 22 Jobs That Can Be Done Remotely
Writer
Writing isn’t just low-paid work that anyone can do; at least not if you specialize.
If you have some sort of technical background or specialization, you can earn six figures as a location independent writer. So if you’ve always enjoyed writing or want to become a writer, don’t rule this option out in your job search.
For example, if you have a medical or nursing background, you could become a medical writer and earn $100K-$150K or more while telecommuting. I spoke to one writer doing this from the Caribbean when I was working as a recruiter, earning $130K.
You could also become a technical writer in non-medical fields. Many industries need technical documents written, from investing & finance, to software technology.
Working as a writer is one of the best location independent jobs, whether you work for a single employer or decide to test the waters as a freelancer. You also don’t need an ultra-fast internet connection on most days, since you’re typically just writing, editing, and submitting documents.
Editor
If you were surprised to hear how much writers can earn above, then this one may shock you, too. Professional editors can earn six figures. Whether editing books, online articles, technical documents, whitepapers, or any other corporate documents, this is one of the best ways to earn a great living while working remotely.
Every online website and publication has an editor, or a team of editors, too. That article you read on Forbes? It had to get past an editor. That article in the New York Times? It’s been edited, too.
For every piece being written online, an editor is needed, and there’s no reason this job cannot be done remotely or from home, so it’s a great career option if you want this flexibility.
Project Manager
Almost every modern industry has project managers. They oversee large projects, delegate tasks to multiple people and multiple teams, and are responsible for the overall project timeline and completion (as well as providing updates to clients).
It’s common for a Project Manager to earn $100K+ in many industries including software technology, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and more. And these people typically do not need a highly-technical background. This is more of a business & people position that requires excellent communication, organization, strategic thinking, problem-solving, and more.
And while not every project management job will be remote, some are. This will depend greatly on the industry and company, but it’s worth looking into if you think this type of job fits your strengths and skills.
Read more about how to get into project management here.
Software Engineer
No list of location independent jobs is complete without mentioning software engineering.
This is an incredibly broad field that includes mobile app development, web development, and other types of software engineering (such as developing in-house tools for a large bank, or developing a script that analyzes data for a company to improve their advertising).
Software Engineers regularly earn $100K+ including when working remotely. This is also one of the easiest types of work for getting an employer to let you go remote. A significant percentage of software engineers work remotely, whether freelance or for a single employer.
This page has a list of the best tech job boards.
And this page has job boards focused on remote job listings.
Both of those resources above can help you find remote jobs in technology and software development in particular.
Web Designer
If software development isn’t your thing, you could consider learning web design instead. Before a programmer creates a web page, someone needs to design it – the graphics, color schemes, layout, buttons, and more.
It’s possible to earn six figures as a remote web designer, whether working for an agency, a large corporation, or freelance.
As a web designer, you’ll work closely with the tech-focused people in an organization – like software engineers – but you won’t need the same technical background.
UX/UI Designer
If you’re not familiar with the term – this stands for user experience & user interface. In this job, you’d focus entirely on what an online user sees when interacting with your company’s software and website.
You may survey users, observe behavior and patterns recorded via software, and come up with changes or improvements to help the business attract more customers, keep people on the website longer, or any number of other goals. (This depends heavily on the business. For example – a site like YouTube simply wants to keep people on the site for as long as possible so they watch more ads. Whereas a site like Amazon wants you to make purchases).
This field does require training, and may not be as easy to break into as some of the others mentioned above, but it makes a great location independent career once you have the skills. And it can often pay $100K+, making it one of the highest paying remote jobs available.
Product Designer
A product designer takes an idea or concept through to becoming a real product that’s ready to be sold. This can include some areas mentioned above, like UI/UX, but often involves more as well.
This is another great job that can be done from home and can earn you six figures, especially in an industry like technology.
As a product designer, you’ll work with prototypes and sketches, all the way through to testing and finalizing a product that’s ready for consumers to buy!
Product Manager
A Product Manager is responsible for overseeing the success of a product.
Unlike a product designer, they typically work with a product that’s already on the market and being sold. And unlike a Project Manager, they usually take ownership of one single product, or one area of a large product, and continuously work to try to grow and improve that product.
Whereas, a Project Manager (mentioned earlier), will take on many projects throughout the typical year. Each one has deadlines, milestones, etc. Projects finish, new ones start. So that’s how they differ.
As an example, when I was a tech recruiter in NYC, I spoke with Product Managers who oversaw specific parts of a large software platform. For example, at Uber, there isn’t just going to be one Product Manager, even though it’s technically one app/service.
Whether you join a large tech company or a smaller start-up, product management is a great way to build a high-paying tech career with the possibility to go remote.
Graphic Designer
Companies need all sorts of graphics – from logos and website images to PDF designs, product designs, and more.
And as long as you have a powerful laptop, there’s no reason that this job can’t be done from home or anywhere else.
While the average pay may not be quite as high as other jobs mentioned above, it’s still a great option for being well-paid while telecommuting.
According to PayScale.com, the average salary in the US is $45,000 per year.
Content Marketer
Content marketing is the creation and distribution of content (like blog posts, videos, social media posts, and more) to acquire new leads and customers for a business.
It’s the main way I grow this blog, CareerSidekick, and it’s how many businesses grow. This means there are a lot of content marketing jobs available.
While the starting salary won’t be six figures, there’s a ton of room for growth and upward mobility in this industry. It’s also one of the best fields to find remote jobs since almost nothing you do requires you to be in a physical office location.
Social Media Manager
Practically every company has social accounts these days – Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and sometimes YouTube or LinkedIn.
And they need someone to manage these accounts. This is a relatively new field that most managers/CEO’s don’t know much about, so if you have this expertise, you can easily land a high-paying job, and are very likely to be allowed to work from home if you ask!
You could also do this as a freelancer, and manage the social media accounts of multiple small companies. With this method, it would be possible to earn six figures per year… by charging $1-2K per month and having 5-10 clients.
Digital Marketer
Digital marketing is a broad field that includes some of the areas mentioned above (such as content marketing).
Any company with a website or online presence needs digital marketing help. Along with social media and content creation, digital marketers also manage paid ad campaigns in many companies.
Because of this, you’ll often be paid more than a content marketer or social media manager. Companies can earn far more from successful advertising campaigns (because they control the budget and can “scale up” quickly once they’re seeing some success). So you can absolutely earn $100K-200K in this field.
This article has the best websites and courses to learn digital marketing
Email Marketer
Email marketing is one specific sub-set of digital marketing. Most companies maintain an email list – whether it’s potential leads who signed up for a freebie or past customers who gave their email address during checkout.
And companies can earn a ton of money by re-marketing to their email list, so email marketers are very highly paid. Everything can be done remotely, so email marketing is one of the best jobs if you want to be location independent. You’ll find that many of these jobs are listed as “remote”, and if not, you’re likely to hear “yes” if you ask for it.
Attorney
If you have a law degree, you could look into turning this into a remote career – whether it’s providing consultations to clients as a freelancer or serving as counsel for one company.
If you take the second route, you’d probably want to target an internet company, since they’re most likely to allow you to be remote. Employers in more traditional industries like pharmaceuticals, banking & finance, etc., are probably going to want their lawyers on-site at the office each day.
Accountant
If you have an accounting degree, it’s possible that you could find an employer that allows your position to be remote.
For example, I know multiple tax accountants who are completely location-independent and work online, some fro foreign countries.
They either work for a large company and do tax returns and consultations for the company’s clients, or they open their own private practice and start taking clients directly.
Sales
Sales is one of the highest paying corporate jobs you can get, period, and it’s also a position that lends itself to being done remotely.
Plenty of salespeople do their work on the phone only, rather than selling in-person. And for those people, there’s no reason they can’t do the job from home, as long as the company allows it.
And you can earn $200K-300K+ while working in sales; sometimes millions. This is because employers typically pay commission, so you’re earning a percentage of the deals you bring in, not just a flat salary.
In fact, in one of my first jobs, I sat next to the sales team (despite working in Account Management – a separate area), and one of the people there earned more than a million dollars a year by selling on the phone.
To earn as much as possible, look for B2B (business-to-business) sales jobs, not business-to-consumer, and look for companies with high-priced products or products with recurring billing, like expensive software that customers pay each year to use. That’s most likely to get you a good commission structure.
Here’s an article with everything you need to know about sales jobs
Account Manager
If sales isn’t your thing, you could also work as an Account Manager, overseeing existing customers for a company. Some Account Managers can earn commission, too, if they convince their clients to bring more business over.
For example, I worked as an Account Manager for a telecommunications company. Our customers used us for phone and internet services. I didn’t do the initial sales call to bring the client on, but once I was managing an account, I’d get paid a commission if they added more phone lines or services with us.
If they decide to spend more with us, I get paid for it!
And like sales, many Account Manager jobs could be done remotely; it’s just a matter of finding a company that’s open to the idea and finding a job where you don’t need to be meeting with clients in-person. This will depend on the industry.
Recruiter
Some recruiters meet every candidate in person and need an office to do this. However, many recruiters do not. In my most recent recruiting job, I was located in Boston but recruited only in the New York City market! No face-to-face interactions in a typical week. (My team did make the occasional trip down to NYC on the train, but it wasn’t extremely often).
Many people don’t realize, but it’s similar to sales, and you earn commissions if you work at a recruitment agency. Look for a position where you’re recruiting in many different cities and regions. That way, it’s more likely that the company will let you do it remotely.
Here’s an article with the pros and cons of working as a recruiter
Business Analyst & Business Intelligence
These are actually two slightly different roles, but they’re very similar and it’s possible to do both while working from home.
A Business Analyst works to improve efficiency within a business – looking at different groups, divisions and departments to find improvements.
Whereas someone working in business intelligence focuses on macro-trends… the overall market and industry, competitors, new channels for acquiring customers, etc. They’re more focused outward, on how the company is performing as a whole, compared to industry peers.
If you like business, data analysis, and analytical thinking, then this could be the ideal remote job for you.
Teacher
While not as high-paying as some other options above, online teaching can earn you a full-time income and can be one of the best remote jobs if you don’t have any advanced qualifications.
You could teach a specialized field that you’re knowledgeable about (fitness, yoga, cooking, etc.), or one of the most common is online English teaching.
Depending on whether you work for yourself or for a larger company, and what you choose to teach, you can earn thousands of dollars a month teaching online from home.
Customer Service & Support
Many online companies need massive customer support departments. Airbnb, Amazon, Uber, etc.
So we’re going to see more and more remote jobs of this type, and there are already many available. You could answer customer service phone calls or answer chat/email requests, or both, depending on the company.
This isn’t the highest-paying remote work out there, but it does provide a full-time income and is one of the best remote positions if you need something quickly, because there are SO many jobs of this type available.
The Job You Already Have
If you’re currently employed, then it’s possible that your current job could become a remote work opportunity if you just ask! So don’t overlook that option. It’s often much faster to negotiate to telecommute with your current position than start a whole new job search.
So ask yourself: Could someone with my job work from home? Is it feasible with what I do each day?
And if so, plan how to approach your boss to ask!
I’d recommend asking to try one or two days per week first. That way, you can demonstrate that you’re still productive while you work remotely.
This is also how I’d recommend negotiating for a new job to be remote. Many companies are open to the idea, but they might be nervous if you ask to never come into the office from the beginning. They want you to meet the team, prove yourself, etc. So by asking for one to two days per week, and making sure you perform like a rock-star on those days, you’ll be able to work up to having a fully-remote job with the company.
Now you know 22 great remote/location-independent jobs. It’s up to you to decide which you’re qualified for and which you’d enjoy.
After that, it’s time to start researching companies and applying so you can get interviews and land a position!

Blawg 100 Hall of Fame
ABA Journal Web 100
Blawg 100 Hall of Fame
By Sarah Mui, Molly McDonough and Lee Rawles
December 2018
Since 2012, the ABA Journal has maintained the Blawg 100 Hall of Fame to note consistently outstanding law blogs. The list of best blogs has grown to 60, with five new additions for 2018. Descriptions which follow were written in the year the blog joined the Hall of Fame.
Warning labels on products generally result from someone, somewhere trying something boneheaded, whether it be the consumer or the company itself. At Abnormal Use, breathtaking examples of the tort cases that result from such failures of judgment are cataloged and analyzed.
In a Supreme Ambitions post this fall, David Lat summed up the blog he founded in this way: “Above the Law … covers the legal profession at large, in a sweeping, high/low mix—from the heights of the U.S. Supreme Court to the depths of disgraced and depraved attorneys.” That pretty much nails it. We’ll also note that ATL has added directories of law schools, law firms and recruiters this year, as well as a few new columnists.
Law firm consultant Bruce MacEwen’s “synthesis of economics and the law is especially interesting in the work I do and because both topics, separately and combined, make for great reading post-2008. Moreover, MacEwen is a careful writer, and his articles reflect that.” —Mark Reber, senior marketing manager at Bullivant Houser Bailey in Portland, Oregon
Clear writing in a contract can avert disaster, and Ken Adams’ blog exists to keep legal writers from steering into icebergs. Many posts focus on a single, common turn of phrase—such as “in furtherance of the foregoing”—in contracts and why the phrase should never be used. Adams also pays close attention to other writing experts in the legal blogosphere and notes where he disagrees with their assessments.
Stinson Leonard Street lawyer Liz Kramer’s blog marked its sixth “blogiversary” during what she called the Summer of Arbitration because of the avalanche of arbitration cases and regulation. But Kramer goes beyond recounting rulings to look for arbitration trends and lessons for her “warm community of fellow arbitration geeks.”
The bloggers of Attorney@Work truly fulfill the promise of their slogan: “One really good idea every day for enterprising lawyers.” Law practice management may not be for the faint of heart, but the tips and tricks offered by this blog can make it easier.
At this blog, law professors discuss what skills and qualities—beyond knowing the law—the future lawyers in their classrooms really need and the nitty-gritty of how to teach them. Recent posts discuss suggestions for bar exam reform, approaches to take with Generation Z law students who were raised on the internet, and what law students remember about professors decades later.
This South Texas College of Law professor has captured our attention with his U.S. Supreme Court-predicting algorithm, his Harlan Institute focused on education and his FantasySCOTUS league; and he has kept it with his more than 9,000 posts on the Supreme Court and constitutional law.
Canna Law Blog helped the Canna Law Group of Harris Bricken make a name for itself in this emerging practice area. “People might have laughed about the idea of cannabis law as a field, but there is no doubt it has become, in every sense, legitimate,” Wu says. “Here is a great resource for the curious as well as those interested in actually entering the specialty.”
American Lawyer reporter Vivia Chen writes graceful prose without dancing around the issues near and dear to her readers, who want to succeed in law on their own terms. Some choice questions from her posts this year: Should men be gagged, tied up and forced to take paternity leave? Do you ever feel like wringing the necks of underlings who seem incapable of following your directives? Keep telling us how you really feel, Vivia, and we’ll keep reading.
This is a highly specific niche blog that nonetheless deserves its spot in the top 100 because of how utterly indispensable it is for its demographic. If you practice law in or around China or if you do any business with Chinese companies, you probably already have this bookmarked. Heck, if you’re even visiting China, give it a read because the bloggers provide excellent practical advice on not getting kidnapped. (We admit being fascinated by the anti-kidnapping advice.)
Why are we featuring an employment law blog for Connecticut and not a state with a higher population? Because Hartford-based blogger (and ‘09 Legal Rebel) Daniel Schwartz consistently impresses us with concise and incisive analysis of the latest cases and issues to arise in employment law, although occasionally venturing into more lighthearted territory. (“Ten of the Best Workplace Songs for Labor Day,” for example.)
This National Constitution Center blog covers the U.S. Supreme Court, legal history and other constitutional news and debate. In the weekly We the People podcast, NCC President and CEO Jeffrey Rosen talks to leading experts on timely or historical constitutional topics. At the blog you can also find the NCC’s Interactive Constitution, where a pair of scholars—one selected by the Federalist Society, the other by the American Constitution Society—find common ground and write a joint statement about each provision of the constitution.
Houston criminal defense attorney Mark Bennett has been at the legal blogging game for more than 10 years. In his posts, he sides against creating new laws and policies that might protect some but chip away at the First Amendment for all; calls out questionable ethical moves by fellow lawyers and judges in Texas; and shares random tidbits about little things he does to boost his advocacy—like taking improv classes and filing pleadings on quality paper stock.
How technology and social media affect modern employers and employment law has been a particular focus of Molly DiBianca, although she ably covers other topics as well. The blog is full of thoughtful and well-reasoned advice to employers and their attorneys; while the laws cited may be specific to Delaware, the broader principles are applicable across the country.
Since 2011, Jean P. O’Grady has been a voice for the rarely sung but invaluable information professionals in the industry. Emerging technologies have changed the landscape for law librarians; O’Grady’s blog provides guidance on the newest tools available to the profession and on opportunities for librarians to be a driving force for innovation.
Lee Rosen’s blog may have the word divorce in its name, but its usefulness extends beyond family law practitioners. Any attorney who runs a law practice can benefit from the practical, concrete advice Rosen gives readers for marketing and managing a firm.
Brief and exceedingly timely posts by law professor Rick Hasen of the University of California at Irvine provide exhaustive coverage of the election law issues of the day. This is a good one to bookmark as an election year approaches.
Eric Meyer’s blog “is a must-read every day for employment lawyers,” says Kevin Wicka of the Tarantino Law Firm in Buffalo, New York. Meyer provides “witty analysis of current legal developments,” says Jen Cornell of Nilan Johnson Lewis in Minneapolis. “I can often turn it into use right away for my clients.” His blog’s loyal readers say Meyer has fun with his subject matter. His posts recognize “the humor in dealing with human beings,” says Julie Young of JMY Law in Worthington, Ohio.
“As employment counsel, I review all of the [Americans with Disabilities Act] reasonable accommodations as well as [Family Medical Leave Act] issues. For that reason, this blog is a critical resource to me and my staff. I tell all of our EEO and HR employees to sign up for the newsletter and to use this blog for information concerning FMLA and ADA issues.” —John Kim, NYC Health and Hospitals

Open sourcing analysis, plus US, China and HQ2
The big news today is that — finally — we have Amazon’s selection of cities for its dual second headquarters (Northern Virginia and NYC). Then some notes on China. But first, semiconductors and open sourcing analysis.
We are experimenting with new content forms at TechCrunch. This is a rough draft of something new – provide your feedback directly to the authors: Danny at [email protected] or Arman at [email protected] if you like or hate something here.
Pivot: Future of semiconductors, chips, AI, etc.
Last week, I focused on SoftBank’s debt and Form D filings by startups. On Friday, I asked what I should start to analyze next. There were several feedback hotspots, but the one that popped out to me was around next-generation chips and the battle for dominance at the hardware layer.
As a software engineer, I know almost nothing about silicon (the beauty of abstraction). But it is clear that the future of all kinds of workflows will increasingly be driven by capabilities at the hardware/silicon level, particularly in future applications like artificial intelligence, machine learning, AR/VR, autonomous driving, and more. Furthermore, China and other countries are spending billions to go after the leaders in this space such as Nvidia and Intel. Startups, funding, competition, geopolitics — we’ve got it all here.
Arman and I are now diving deeper into this space. We will start to post once we have some interesting things to share, but if you have ideas, opinions, companies or investments in this space: tell us about them, as we are all ears: [email protected] and [email protected].
Open-source analysis at TechCrunch
Since I launched this daily “column” last week, I have included the text near the top that “We are experimenting with new content forms at TechCrunch.” One of those forms is what might be called open-source journalism. Definitions are fuzzy, but I take it to mean working “in the open”: allowing you, the audience of this column, to engage in not just feedback around finalized and published posts, but to actually affect the entire process of analysis, from sourcing and ideation to data science and writing.
I am thankful to work at a publication like TechCrunch where my readers are often working in the exact sectors that I am writing about. When I wrote about Form Ds last week, a number of startup attorneys reached out with their own thoughts and analysis, and also explained key aspects of how the law is changing around SEC disclosure for startups. That’s really powerful, and I want to apply it to as many fields as possible.
This thesis is ultimately intentional — now I have to operationalize it. There aren’t good tools (yet!) that I know of that allows for easy sharing of data and notes that doesn’t rely on a hacked together set of Google Docs and Github. But I’m exploring the stack, and will publish more things publicly as we have them.
Amazon HQ2 – the future of corporate relations with cities
Amazon’s long process for selecting an HQ2 is finally over, and the official answer is two: Northern Virginia and NYC. Tons of words have been spilled about the search, and I am sure even more analysis will strike today about what put those two locations over the top.
To me, the key for mayors is to start using these reverse searches (where a company seeks a city and not vice versa) as leverage to actually get resources to fund infrastructure and other critical services.
This is a theme that I discussed about a year ago:
Take Boston’s bid for GE’s new headquarters. Yes, the city offered property tax rebates of about $25 million , but GE’s move also pushed the state to fund a variety of infrastructure improvements, including the Northern Avenue bridge and new bike lanes. That bridge adds a critical path for vehicles and pedestrians in Boston’s central business district, yet has gone unfunded for years.
Ideally, governments could debate, vote, and then fund these sorts of infrastructure projects and community improvements. The reality is that without a time-sensitive forcing function like a reverse RFP process, there is little hope that cities and states will make progress on these sorts of projects. The debates can literally go on forever in American democracy.
So if you are a mayor or economic planning official, use these processes as tools to get stuff done. Use the allure of new jobs and tax revenues to spur infrastructure spending and get a rezoning through a recalcitrant city council. Use that “prosperity bomb” to upgrade old parts of the urban landscape and prepare the city for the future. A healthier, more humane city can be just around the corner.
Take DC. The city has seen one of the best-run Metro systems deteriorate to abysmal levels over the past few years due to a complete dumpster fire of organizational design (the DC transit agency WMATA is funded by inconsistent revenue sources that ensure it will never be sustainable). Here is an opportunity to use Amazon’s announcement to get the tax framework and operations figured out to ensure that real estate, transportation, and other critical urban infrastructure are designed effectively.
China’s mobile internationalization
Timothy Allen/Getty Images
Talking about second headquarters, the technology industry clearly has separated into poles, one based around the United States and the other based around China. Two articles I read recently gave good insights of the benefits and challenges for China in this world.
The first is from Sam Byford writing at The Verge, who investigates the native OS options that Chinese consumers receive from companies like Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo, and others. The headline is much more shrill than the text, so don’t let that frighten you.
Byford provides an overview of the lineage of Chinese mobile OSes, and also notes that what might look like design gaffes in Western consumer eyes might be critical needs for Chinese buyers:
But what is true today is that not all Chinese phone software is bad. And when it is bad from a Western perspective, it’s often bad for very different reasons than the bad Android skins of the past. Yes, many of these phones make similar mistakes with overbearing UI decisions — hello, Huawei — and yes, it’s easy to mock some designs for their obvious thrall to iOS. But these are phones created in a very different context to Android devices as we’ve previously understood them.
The article is perhaps a tad long for what it is, but Byford’s key viewpoint should be repeated as a mantra by any person connected to the technology sector today: “The Chinese phone market is a spiraling behemoth of innovation and audacity, unlike anything we’ve ever seen. If you want to be on board with the already exciting hardware, it’s worth trying to understand the software.”
Of course, while China may be a huge country, its leading technology companies do want to globalize and expand their user bases outside of the Middle Kingdom’s borders. That may well be a challenging proposition.
Writing at Factor Daily, Shadma Shaikh dives into the failure of WeChat to break into the Indian market. The product lessons learned by WeChat’s owner Tencent could be applied to any Silicon Valley company — cultural knowledge and appropriate product design are key to entering overseas markets.
Shaikh gives a couple of examples:
Another design feature in the app allowed users to look up and send add-friend requests to WeChat users nearby. During initial onboarding when users were just checking app’s features, many would tap the “people nearby” feature, which would switch on location sharing by default – including with strangers. Once location sharing with strangers was switched on, it wasn’t very intuitive to turn it off.
“Women used to get a lot of unwarranted messages from men, which was a major turn off and many of them left the platform,” Gupta says. “China probably didn’t have this stalking problem.”
And
In China, where the internet was cheaper than in India in 2012, sending video files of, say, 4 MB was not a challenge. WhatsApp compresses a 5 MB photo to 40 kilobytes. WeChat did not compress the files and took many minutes and data to send and receive media files.
Internationalization will never be easy, but the lessons that Silicon Valley has slowly learned over the past two decades will need to be learned again by Chinese companies if they want to export their software to other countries.
