Atroquinine Headcanons

Atroquinine is the name of a chemical found exclusively in Borgnian cocoons. It has two enantiomers-- the R enantiomer is the poison and the S enantiomer is the medicine that can cure incuritis. For obvious reasons this is a pharmaceutical nightmare

(For context, enantiomers are chemicals that are non-superimposable mirror images of each other, like this:)

When extracting atroquinine from the cocoons, you'll get a racemic mixture (50:50 of both enantiomers). It's costly and difficult to isolate the S enantiomer, which (coupled with the R enantiomer's extremely low LD50) makes atroquinine extraction highly dangerous and led to its restriction to Borgnia

Atroquinine (the poison) is closer in my mind to Strychnine but with a few elements of V-series nerve agents. The symptoms (burning throat, arching back, trembling limbs, onset of 10-20 minutes) are more consistent with Strychnine while the physical properties (non-volatile, odorless liquid, long shelf life, extremely low LD50) are closer to VX and similar nerve agents. This is Ace Attorney and actual chemistry means nothing so I'm just gonna mash the two together and call it a day. VX being an AChE inhibitor is irrelevant bc I think glycine receptor antagonists are sexier

wait i have one more thing to say on the subject. this post is krisnix in its own warped way:

it didn't change anything (the atroquinine traps were planted long before kristoph and phoenix became proper friends). it didn't save anyone (and god knows phoenix wright has a savior complex a mile wide). there were just too many forces against it (the diary page, the atroquinine traps, kristoph's utter inability to relinquish whatever forms of control he has). but it still matters that the love was there (it matters because it made everything so much worse. because they took each other's respective "betrayals" so much more personally even when logic dictates that they should have seen it coming. because even when it ended with kristoph screaming phoenix's name in the middle of a breakdown on the witness stand it still matters that they knew each other for seven years and even after they'd gone and turned on each other one of the first things they say when phoenix visits kristoph in his cell is "...you look well, phoenix wright." "you, too...gavin."). their relationship (whatever it was) was a tragedy before it even began and they still took it as hard as if they'd never expected something like it to happen at all.

Hey it's aa4 turnabout trump and succession overthinking time!! !

Why did Kristoph kill Zak? We never get it spelled out to us, but I have to guess it was partly to maintain control and partly a lapse in his own self-control. Zak appearing suddenly would be so alarmingly problematic to everything he's built and maintained, he'd have no choice but to take care of it that same night he happened to pass by Zak and Spark.

Like surely he was thinking this was a big play by Phoenix (what are the chances of them having dinner together AND having Zak show up again), but doubly surely he could play him back by pinning the murder on the guy who was actually playing poker down there with the victim.

Thinking about this lead me to wonder how Kristoph was perfectly set up to fall by Phoenix. Did Phoenix choose to work at Borscht Bowl Club because of the unique hidden architecture?

I forget, but was it implied/mentioned that the restaurant was where Zak and Phoenix first played poker?? Maybe he stayed working there for 7 years in part to lull Kristoph into a false sense of security so that his trap would spring flawlessly. Like "Yes Kristoph I'm stuck here because I'm miserable and have a gambling addiction so there's no need to think twice about how best to arrange the scene of the crime to make it look like I did it. Don't mind me while I make a forgery of my own."

I also can't help but think about what things would look like if Kristoph had gotten and won the Magnifi case. He definitely would've outshined his rockstar brother as a result. Maybe it would've cemented his control over Klavier.
