An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) from the Ekiti State Police Command has been killed in a hit-and-run incident. The officer, identified as ASP Idris Lawal, was crushed to death at a checkpoint on Iworoko Road in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.   The tragic event occurred on Monday night, according to an internal police memo obtained by SaharaReporters. The document indicated that ASP Lawal was struck by an unregistered white Mercedes Benz while performing stop-and-search duties at Ayemi Garage. Chennai: Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras with face recognition technology monitoring the streets, dedicated teams to crack long-pending criminal cases or a friendly DCP (deputy commissioner of police) assuring people about the safety of their neighborhood, policing in the city is getting dynamic with a fresh team of officers at the helm. Blending technology with interpersonal skills, the youngest-ever batch of six IPS officers are emerging as a promising bunch for the Chennai City Police.

A case in point is the significant dip in chain snatchings and thefts in T Nagar this Diwali. “Earlier, at least 40 to 50 cases of snatching were reported during Diwali season, but it has reduced considerably this year,” said a police officer, attributing the decline to better policing because of CCTV cameras with face recognition technology. “Using technology has helped us reduce the burden on the police. Digitising records has also aided in utilizing manpower efficiently,” says C Aravindhan, a computer science graduate, who introduced the idea of the CCTV technology.
At the other end of the city, C Kalaiselvan plans to have CCTV cameras in the whole of Madhavaram police district. “There are four arterial roads and many link roads. If we install CCTV cameras across these roads, no one can escape from the police purview after committing a crime,” says the 34-year-old postgraduate in agriculture. He believes that technology is a handy tool for the police.
Breaking the image of the authoritative cop, the young crop is ensuring that it is more accessible to the citizens and open to discussions regarding issues in the neighborhoods concerned. DCP Adyar Rohith Nathan believes in personal interactions and tries to meet people under his jurisdiction whenever possible. “Adyar is a cosmopolitan area, so interaction with residents will help to create a sense of a safe community,” says the 28-year- old mechanical engineer from Anna University.
His cousin S Sarvesh Raj, DCP of Ambattur, is also a mechanical engineer. Interested in crime detection, Sarvesh solved the 2013 Mangadu murder case where a woman was found killed in her house. The case had remained unsolved for the past four years. Meticulous planning is his strength but compassion his stimulus. “I want to create an environment where everyone is safe and happy,” said S. Sarvesh Raj, who was the assistant superintendent of police (ASP) in Dindigul.
The officers compete and brainstorm with each other to resolve issues. The eldest in the batch, Pravesh Kumar, believes in team work. A postgraduate in mechanical engineering from IIT Delhi, SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threat) analysis is his mantra. “When I was the superintendent of police in Namakkal, I deployed a dedicated team to solve a triple murder case,” he said. Using dedicated teams has helped in reducing crime in his jurisdiction and is serving as a model for others.
Handling sensitive areas like Washermenpet and Kasimedu, known for rowdies and brawls among fisherfolk, IPS officer Sashank Sai falls back on his experience as ASP. “As an ASP in Tenkasi and Nagapattinam I have handled many criminals and dealt with issues relating to fishermen. Those areas have moulded me and helped me to handle fisherfolk in Kasimedu and rowdies in Washermenpet,” said Sashank, who studied mechanical engineering at the Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, Hyderabad, before joining the uniformed services.
Getting young guns was a strategy, says city police commissioner A K Viswanathan, who assumed charge in May amid the political turmoil in the state. “The youngsters are living up to new challenges and their novel problem solving ideas using technology is showing the way for the rest of the state,” he said.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in Kebbi has decorated two new Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) and 80 other senior officers with new ranks. The Commissioner of Police (CP) in the state, Chris Aimionowane, who decorated the officers in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday, said the promotions followed the recommendation of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and approval by the Police Service Commission. He congratulated the newly-promoted officers on behalf of the IGP and charged them to be more committed in discharging their duties. Aimionowane urged the officers to consider their promotion as a recognition of their hard work and dedication to duty, as well as motivation and additional responsibility. He equally advised them to be disciplined and loyal to constituted authority to deserve more promotions while in the Force. Speaking on behalf of the promoted officers, DCP Ali Yusuf thanked Allah for sparing their lives with sound health to witness the “memorable day”. He further expressed their profound gratitude to the IGP and the PSC for graciously recommending and approving their promotions. The officers were officially decorated during a ceremony held in Akure, the state capital, at the weekend. Egbetokun, represented by Assistant Inspector General, AIG Ebong Ebong of Zone 17, which encompasses Ondo and Ekiti States, welcomed the newly promoted Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP) to their elevated positions. During his address, Egbetokun emphasised the importance of the officers proving themselves deserving of their new designations. Out of the 224 officers, 73 had already been confirmed in their new ranks, while the confirmation process for the remaining officers is still pending, according to the IG. The IG stressed the concept of responsibility, stating that with their promotion comes a heightened level of expectations. He urged the officers to exhibit professionalism, civility, and fairness in the execution of their duties. “From today, know what to say, where you go and what to do. Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh: The operations are still underway to rescue Lokesh, the eight-year-old who fell into 60-feet deep borewell on Tuesday at Kher Khedi village of Madhya Pradesh's Vidisha district, said officials.
"Work to dig parallel to the borewell is complete. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) will now make a tunnel between them. A platform is set-up to keep the child safe after that will the tunnel be made. NDRF says operations can take another 1.5-2 hours," Vidisha Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sameer Yadav told ANI.
According to the officials, the boy is stuck at 43 feet and a doctor's team is monitoring the child.
The ASP added, "The child hasn't eaten anything as we were unable to reach him inside the tunnel. But the NDRF team has assured to make the rescue faster and hopefully the child will be safely out soon."
The police and administration reached the spot immediately on recieving the information about the incident.

15-year-old boy dies as fire guts Police barrack’s apartment in Lagos

A teenager identified as Emmanuel David, was killed after fire broke out in one of the apartments inside Police Barracks at Falomo, Ikoyi, Lagos.
The deceased said to be the son of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Godspower David attached to Bar Beach Division of the Lagos Police Command, was discovered by rescuers after the fire had been put out at their Room 24, Block One residence.
Although the cause of the fire outbreak was yet to be ascertained, it was learnt that the 15-year-old was already asleep when it broke out.
Spokesman of the state police command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the incident on Friday February 3, said from the report received, the fire broke out around 9pm on Tuesday night, February 28, adding that emergency responders were immediately mobilised to the scene.
“The teams successfully put out the fire, however, during evacuation of the debris, corpse of one Emmanuel Godspower David, 15, the son of the officer consumed by the inferno was found. The corpse was evacuated to a public morgue for autopsy, while investigation is in progress," he said.
The PPRO said the Commissioner of Police (CP) Owohunwa Idowu alongside his deputy, DCP Isa Grema, visited the family on Thursday to condole with them over the sad incidence.
