BRACKET REVEAL
Alright. At long last, I present to you the bracket...or should I say...*BRACKETS* for the Virtual Character Tournament!
Given the scale, the first round is going to be one bracket per week, 4 a day, with each lasting 24 hours. I know that this is still tight, but given how many contestants there are, along with the necessary inclusions of images and propaganda (oh and I guess also my job), it's what I can do to keep this semi-manageable. There's also no redemption round this time. It's gonna be a single elimination tournament. Be kind to your peers. This is not but a drop in the infinite ocean of the internet.
...oh yeah the brackets themselves. We'll be going in order over the course of 4 weeks. I'll make proper announcements for them as they commence. Given how many there are and what I want to get done beforehand, Bracket 1 will likely begin some time this week. But for the matchups...

I like anime a lot, demon slayer and fmab have to be my favorites tho, I have watched spy x family, and MHA (I like them but I have to be in the mood to watch). AOT was good but also very sad. oh have you ever watched a anime called assassination classroom? It’s definitely a favorite anime for me, it’s meant to be a comedy but kinda an action one too. And I’ve watched a little bit of one called sword art online. There is another anime I’ve watched but I don’t remember the name but it’s a pretty good one. And I couldn’t keep myself into death note for to long, I have tried multiple times but I usually stop paying attention at some point when watching it. Trigun is good one too, I haven’t finished it yet but it very good.
For books I’ve been reading through two books rn one is called death by a whisker and the other one is called west of the moon, they’re both very interesting books, I usually don’t really watch tv shows that much, unless it’s like a drama or something, but if cartoons count I do watch those every few weeks lol
Do you play video games (Minecraft, ff, vr stuff, etc.)
Is anyone free to talk?

Progress Update:
Hey! It's been a wild week, but don't think I'm just sitting on my hands!
So far, I've gotten most of the characters vetted and confirmed. I'm still trying to figure out what I should do about the many 1-vote submissions. I'm most likely going to sort through them and do some form of preliminaries. It's gonna be quite a bit though, as of the 300+ submissions for the 128 slots, only about 50 or so were characters with more than 1 vote. As such, I'm likely going to first be handling characters from franchises that have more than 3 representatives, and then go to like IPs. I need to check how many that will get us, and then move from there. It's gonna be getting about 78 characters from around 100~ submissions, so it's just removing a few.
...but I understand there's been a large wait. So I'll at least give you the characters that have gotten 2 or more votes, and will definitely be moving on!
Hatsune Miku (Vocaloid)
Ene (Kagerou Project)
Hera (Wolf 559)
GIFanny (Gravity Falls)
Little Hal (Homestuck)
Porygon (Pokemon)
Monika (DDLC)
Ritsu (Assassination Classroom)
Sophia (Persona 5 Strikers)
Alter Ego (Danganronpa)
The Doctor (Star Trek Voyager)
Aiba (AI: The Somnium Files)
J.A.R.V.I.S. (MCU)
Chiaki Nanami (Danganronpa)
Dr. Coomer (Half Life VR but the AI is self aware)
MXES (FNAF Security Breach)
Nicole the Holo-Lynx (Archie Sonic)
Lea (CrossCode)
The Squip (Be More Chill)
Holly (Red Dwarf)
Sage (Sonic Frontiers)
Kasane Teto (UATU)
Benry (Half Life VR but the AI is self aware)
Agumon (Digimon)
Motherboard (Cyberchase)
Hakuno Kishinami (Fake/Extra)
Light Hope (She-Ra)
Yui (Sword Art Online)
Glitchtrap (FNAF Help Wanted)
Daia (Kiratto PriChan)
Sayu (No Straight Roads)
Buddy (Buddy Simulator 1984)
Zero III (Zero Escape)
AM (I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream)
The Machine (Person of Interest)
Popy Pipopapo (Kamen Rider Ex Aid)
Lyla (Spider-Man Across the Spiderverse)
Murder-Bot 2.0 (The Murderbot DIaries)
Lumina Ichihoshi (Dig Delight Direct Drive DJ)
ART (The Murderbot Diaries)
XANA (Code Lyoko)
Noah Kaiba (Yu-Gi-Oh!)
Guy (Free Guy)
Tama (AI: The Somnium Files)
Also, of the 1 vote characters, I'm moving 3 more forward to autoqualify due to significance and also for one of them, my own bias (I ditched one of my own autoqualified earlier with the whole riddle thing).
These characters are:
SHODAN (System Shock)
Mamechi (Tamagotchi)
Aya (Green Lantern the Animated Series)
I'll keep you all posted, but I'm hoping to have those preliminaries figured out and up this week. I'll let you know if there are sudden changes.

Rewiring History: Hacking the Past Through Games
In this article, game designer Sande Chen reports on a New York Comic Con panel about using games for history classes. I had recently started looking at the Gaming the Past website and so, I thought this panel called "Rewiring History: Hacking the Past Through Games" at New York Comic Con on October 8, 2019 might be insightful on the issue of counterfactual histories. The panel was targeted towards teachers who were thinking of using games to teach history in the classroom.
But on the whole, what was presented was more of a "You Were There" flavor rather than parallel universes. For instance, students can witness the 1772 incident, Burning the Gaspee in VR or be immersed in the events leading up to the Boston Massacre in Mission US: For Crown of Colony? (I worked on that game, btw!) It was great to see Leah Potter from Electric Funstuff put up a list of how students can demonstrate historical knowledge in Mission US games rather than answer essay questions. Violence was briefly discussed, as it might be unavoidable when studying wars, but it was deemed acceptable if appropriate and tastefully done. The panelists repeatedly stressed the importance of primary sources visible in the game, something commercial developers might not have, and noted that older games might run better on school computers. A game that had versions for tablets and computers was also preferable since sometimes, students are using whatever devices they can bring to school. Raul Carvajal, Production Manager at Games For Change, recommended the game Papers, Please even though the game is set in a fictional country and not based on any historical event. The game has an Eastern European/Soviet feel, he said, and gives players an impression of what it would be like to live in that environment. Other games discussed were 1979 Revolution: Black Friday, Valiant Hearts, and Assassin's Creed: Origins Discovery Tour. Sande Chen is a writer and game designer whose work has spanned 15 years in the industry. Her credits include 1999 IGF winner Terminus, 2007 PC RPG of the Year The Witcher, and Wizard 101. She is one of the founding members of the IGDA Game Design SIG. Rewiring History: Hacking the Past Through Games published first on https://superworldrom.tumblr.com/

Weeknotes 233
This week might have been a bit shorter because of the bank holiday but it was packed with mostly awesome things! We started off with Diddi’s birthday on Monday and had not only cake but also a piñata full of amazing sweets! After everyone had their turn on the pink unicorn piñata, Linda left for Düsseldorf to take part in the meeting of the digital media council of the NRW. She returned just in time for the PubQuiz we took part in as a team event. While we didn’t win and couldn’t answer everything we found out that Corrado knows a lot about all kinds of things. He even guessed the right answer while making a joke. Who would have thought that “Nicolas Cage” would be the answer to a non-meme-related question? Tuesday was just as exciting as some of us got to test the Assassins Creed: VR escape game at Ubisoft BlueByte. We had lots of fun dressing our virtual characters with hats or masks, exploring the pyramid and shooting arrows to help each other. We escaped masterfully, the game felt great and none of us got motion sickness. Thanks for having us, BlueByte! We’ll come back!
Wednesday wasn’t as fun because some sadness got added to the mix. Diddi is turning over a new leaf and had her last day with us. She brought delicious cookies and made all of us personal gifts gifs we can use in our team chat from now on. While most of us were in the office, saying goodbye and eating cookies and crêpes, Linda was in Berlin for a keynote and the corresponding workshop of the Kompetenzzentrum Technik - Diversity - Chancengleichheit e.V. to further improve the Girls Day and Boys Day and its classroom materials. We are as well very happy, that the Game Mixer program takes place in Cologne this year! Everything kicked off on Thursday. We are looking forward to great the participants on Monday in our office!
While it might not sound as if we did any work this week that’s actually not the case. Tobi worked on new and improved models for the navigation game and marketing material for our trip to China, Corrado improved on the clothing system we implemented for Serena to give us lot’s of individual characters for Simkult with the assets Ulla prepared for him (NEW NEW NEW we can now color everything of each character to our personal preferences - mmh pink beards!) Barbara started working on basic multiplayer functions for Simkult and Linda was busy working on the upcoming tasks and design improvements for Simkult as well as bringing Squirrel & Bär back to iOS 12.
Have a great weekend!

Hyper Japan Festival to Feature 5 VR Experiences Including Death Note VR
Taking place in July is the Hyper Japan Festival, a celebration of all things Japanese, with two events taking place, one in Los Angeles, California, and one in London, UK. As part of the event Japan Character VR Matsuri will be using the latest virtual reality (VR) technology to exhibit works from various Japanese creators and their characters.
Japan Character VR Matsuri will be bringing along two leading Japanese publishers – Shueisha Inc. and Kodansha Ltd., alongside five VR experiences, One Piece Cube, Death Note VR Escape Game, JUMP Cube, JUMP Art Gallery and Hop Step Sing!
One Piece Cube gives attendees a closer look at original manga illustrations from the internationally-popular series in both black and white and colour. With Death Note VR Escape Game visitors will be able to head into the world of Death Note, taking on the role of Misa Amane, who’s been imprisoned in a creepy basement. It’s quickly filling up with water, with players challenged to escape before it’s too late.
For those that love their JUMP manga, Hyper Japan Festival has two gallery experiences on offer, with JUMP Cube full of original illustrations including Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia), Haikyuu!!, and Naruto. While JUMP Art Gallery, is a virtual museum on Samsung Gear VR with artwork from Dragon Ball, Ansatsu Kyoushitsu (Assassination Classroom), Naruto, One Piece, and Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia).
Lastly there’s Hop Step Sing! a VR idol project by Kodansha featuring three Japanese girls, Niina Nijikawa, Shikiri Shiishiba, and Mikasa Minowa. They perform a concert with bright neon changeable backgrounds, that is quintessentially Japanese.
Hyper Japan Festival 2017 takes place from 1st – 4th July in Los Angeles, while the London event takes place from 14th – 16th July.
For further detail head to the Hyper Japan Festival website, and for the latest VR news from around the world keep reading VRFocus.

Ideas for the use of VR in the classroom
The emergence of new technologies is constant. As a result, the educational opportunities for students is growing exponentially. One such example is virtual reality. The power of virtual reality and its experience is bringing the outside world to the classroom and providing experiences that students otherwise may never have. Virtual reality could provide virtual field trip experiences, opportunities to display your work in a dramatic way or to show others a 360 view of an event, concert or athletic trial and receive feedback from someone on the other side of the world (Wylie, 2016).
Taking virtual field trips through the use of virtual reality is the way I would most likely utilize VR in the classroom. Students could see historical sights from around the world that otherwise they wouldn’t have the ability to go to. Many of these sights already provide some sort of virtual field trip that students can experience. For instance, students could explore the location of President Lincoln’s assassination. There are many other resources that provide similar experiences that could be powerful learning tools, such as DiscoveryVR. With the increasing ability for mobile devices to create 360 pictures through various apps, students could also be encouraged to create their own virtual field trips in their travels and share them with classmates.
For a social studies class, the ability to take students on virtual journeys and bring the information from a text or a video alive is a powerful tool. Students want their educational experiences to be authentic and based in the real world. Interestingly, virtual reality is doing just that.
