So, the funniest not funny thing that I've run into this week is that some guy tried to commit suicide by cop at my facility. He just parked in front of the gate and pressed random codes in until the system locked everything down. We were actually pretty freaked out about it until the security forces came back from the gate and told us about it while laughing. So, first thing to note about the security forces on site is that their normal job is getting on quads with AR-15's loaded with blanks and chasing the deer off site. This is for the deer's welfare (we do not want deer wandering into the microwave testing area) and for ours (we do not want anything to disturb the asbestos pit while we are downwind). These are goofy, cheerful 19 year olds. They have the coolest job in the entire world. They didn't even realize that this could be a real threat, they assumed it was just some dumbass trying to walk in by spam pressing the buttons hoping they'll work. (Button spamming is a surprisingly effective strategy, I am not going to tell you how many codes around the base are just the same four numbers over and over.) Anyway, security arrived at the gate to ask the guy to stop and go away, and the guy took the time to announce that he hated the US military and was a member of ISIS.
The first part is not a big deal, the second part was. The security forces, bless them, decided that this seemed unlikely, but worth testing, so they asked the guy a simple question: Could he say literally anything in Arabic? And the guy say, "Allah."
The security forces were like okay, fair, we set the bar pretty low. Can you say anything else, and the guy literally couldn't. Not even dumb shit like "Kebab." He just kept yelling that he was a real goddamn member of ISIS and demanding that they shoot him. They tried to convince him to move his car, and he said that he was going to refuse to until they shot him, and they were like "What if you moved your car, and then we shot you? In case you can't move your car after being shot," and the guy refused. He then threw rocks over the fence until the security forces backed up like another 20 feet, and told him that everyone there was paid hourly. Then he left. So. You know. Stressful, in the sense that having someone who is dangerously unwell show up at your job and try to provoke violence is stressful. But also funny, in the way that the 19 year old dorks tried to reason with this guy, and the failed bluff check that was their attempt at getting him to move his car. And then him driving off him a huff when he realized that getting paid to do nothing isn't nearly as annoying as he hoped it was. (Security said they got his license when he turned around and passed it on to the police. I have no idea what happened after that, but I can guarantee you that the police will have handled things with less grace and tact than those 19 year olds on their quads.)

Glados’s idea of scientific testing makes a lot more sense when you remember that Cave Johnson’s idea of scientific testing was just straight up causing people severe bodily harm or killing them through dumb shit like
- injecting people with praying mantis DNA, leading to them mutating into “an army of mantis men”
- using a test group with the repulsion gel, where the gel was replaced with paint, leading to someone breaking every bone in their legs
- using the repulsion gel in testing when it “does not like the human skeleton” and pumped “experimental genes” into people to attempt to cure tumors
- making sure people had tumors to be cured by presumably putting out a highly radioactive folding chairs in the lobby
- putting fluorescent calcium in the coffee that could “vitrify your frontal lobe” and giving it to test subjects
- putting tiny microchips in peoples skulls that were capable of reaching 500 degrees
- disassembling people
- turning peoples blood into gasoline and, on a separate occasion, peanut water

Life update:
So my life has been very hectic, and what was supposed to be a transition to me living in a new apartment and getting started on commissions has been put on hold because just found out the damaged popcorn ceiling has Asbestos that I may have been exposed to.
For those of you waiting for more art on my part, I will need some more time to sort things out.
Details and venting under the cut. If anyone has advice I will take it.
So yeah, I got a nice apartment that I've not fully moved into because getting furniture into the space has been a trial. But now I don't feel safe at all to fully move in and sleep there knowing that the ceiling contains 6 percent of Chrysotile Asbestos, which wouldn't be complete issue if it was properly sealed and non damaged, but in the kitchen that isn't the case, as when I go into the apartment I noticed that there was a damaged and cracked patch of it on the ceiling. Having heard that popcorn ceiling could contain Asbestos I contacted my landlord on the matter. He sent over some local health inspector consultants to take a sample of the spot. Unfortunately, as I later learned, these people were as familiar with dealing with Asbestos, and their extraction method did a number of things wrong: Mainly they did not where protective masks (opting instead to hold their breath), they did not properly wet the extraction area (which I later learned is what professionals do to avoid kicking up Asbestos), and finally they vacuumed the debris with what I suspect was a vacuum without a proper filter (HEPA filters are what professionals use and talking with this inspector he didn't seem aware that there was a specific filter for treating Asbestos and double checking the type of vacuum they used, that model cannot have HEPA filter installed). So I am very much fearful that given I was present when they were doing this, and because there was damage present to begin with, that I have been exposed and breathed in this toxic material. Additionally, trying to negotiate with my landlord to get the air quality of the apartment tested, filtered and the ceiling encapsulated by a QUALIFIED Abatement professional, is proving to be a bit difficult as be believes (talking to the initial albeit incompetent investigators) that testing air quality and filters isn't needed. I've at least convinced him that he need to contact an actual Asbestos Abatement contractor to repair the ceiling and clear the apartment of any lingering contaminates, but ultimately what happens will be up to him. As for me, I at least have people I've been staying with in the mean time but I cannot stay with them forever, and my things are now moved into that apartment and the prospect of either leaving them there or having to move everything out again is giving me such anxiety and dread. I'm not sure what to do if the landlord doesn't proceed as I would like, if I should take legal action or not. Stuffs been so fudged. And on top of all that, a coworker of mine tested positive for Covid and came to work anyway without a mask on. I CANNOT GET SICK NOW ON TOP OF EVERYTHING!?
If anyone has any advice for me in this situation, I would appreciate it.
I just want a place that's clean and stress free so I can make art for a living, is that so much to ask?

The Importance of Asbestos Testing Services
Asbestos testing and sampling should be carried out whenever building materials appear to be deteriorating or prior to any construction or remodeling projects which could disturb them, as exposure to asbestos fibers poses serious health risks, including mesothelioma and asbestosis.
Asbestos-testing labs should be licensed and insured for accurate results, capable of testing crumbly, solid materials as well as dust samples with either polarized light microscopy or transmission electron microscopy techniques.
Certification
Asbestos is a fibrous and heat-resistant mineral commonly found in building materials. If improperly removed or handled, asbestos exposure may lead to lung diseases and other health concerns if not handled safely - thus making the decision to hire an accredited asbestos inspector essential.
Certified professionals complete training courses managed by third-party accreditors to obtain their credentials and obtain certifications to perform asbestos testing services in various settings.
An asbestos professional typically collects samples of suspicious materials during an inspection and sends them off for lab analysis, taking between several days and several weeks depending on the material type being tested for. Rush and emergency turnaround services are also available at additional costs.
New York City requires any construction, demolition or renovation project that disturbs ACMs to undergo an asbestos survey (ACP-5). Even simple projects like painting or demolishing walls may necessitate this inspection before receiving approval from the Department of Buildings.
Experience
Before undertaking any home renovation project, it is vitally important to hire a certified asbestos inspector. They can test for asbestos in areas like acoustic ceiling sprays, floor tiles, linoleums, insulation materials, drywall/joint compounds and roofing materials - among others.
AHERA accredited inspectors are specially trained to locate, identify and estimate quantities of asbestos-containing material (ACM). They provide thorough reports detailing their findings as well as create abatement plans to address any concerns discovered during inspections.
Asbestos testing should involve examining both solid and friable samples; typically laboratories will need at least one teaspoon of dust.
Naturally occurring asbestos found in rocks and soil poses no immediate health threat, provided it remains undisturbed. When disturbed during construction or demolition activities, asbestos fibers can be released into the air and inhaled by workers and residents in close proximity. A professional asbestos inspection firm should always be able to deliver accurate results, guaranteeing that an area inspected is safe before beginning work or demolition activities in it.
Licensing
Asbestos is a dangerous substance that poses serious health risks when disturbed. Not only can asbestos lead to lung cancer, but also mesothelioma and lung diseases like asbestosis. Therefore, testing for asbestos prior to renovation or demolition work must take place for both occupants and workers' safety.
Asbestos testing should be part of any construction or renovation activity which disturbs building materials such as floor tiles, drywall, pipes, insulation or fire-proofing materials. Furthermore, an asbestos test is strongly advised before purchasing an old home that could contain ACM.
Contractors, project monitors and professional service firms who perform activities that disturb friable asbestos must obtain a license before engaging in such activities. To do so, applicants must complete either an initial or renewal individual licensing package along with State Form 48741. Furthermore, documentation from an EPA/PA approved training course must also be provided before an onsite inspection can take place and an approval issued.
Insurance
Asbestos can be found in older homes built before the mid-1980s. Due to its durability and resistance to fire, asbestos was often utilized for vinyl floor tiles, roofing shingles, wall insulation materials and insulation materials. When these items become damaged they release microscopic asbestos fibers into the air which may eventually lead to serious health conditions such as mesothelioma or lung cancer.
Homeowners insurance typically does not cover the costs associated with asbestos inspection, testing and removal; however, this expense could be covered as part of a claim for property damage due to sudden events like storm-related roof or foundation damage, fire or theft.
When selecting an asbestos testing service, be sure that they possess both standard liability and workers' compensation insurance policies as well as adequate professional liability protection to guard against damages caused by errors of judgment or professional opinions.

Floor Tile and Mastic Removal For Asbestos
youtube
Floor Tile and Mastic Removal For Asbestos
Asbestos is a hazardous material that was once commonly used in building materials such as flooring, insulation, and roofing. It can cause serious health problems if it is inhaled or ingested. When it comes to removing asbestos-containing floor tiles and mastic, it is important to follow specific guidelines and procedures to minimize the risk of exposure to asbestos fibers. In this article, we will discuss the safe and effective methods for floor tile and mastic Removal for asbestos.
Why is Asbestos Found in Floor Tiles and Mastic?
Asbestos was commonly used in floor tiles and mastic during the mid-20th century. It was often used as a binding agent in vinyl tiles, and as a filler material in mastic. As a result, many buildings constructed between the 1950s and 1980s contain asbestos-containing floor tiles and mastic.
What Are the Risks of Removing Asbestos-Containing Floor Tiles and Mastic?
Removing asbestos-containing floor tiles and mastic can be a dangerous task, as it can release asbestos fibers into the air if not done properly. The fibers can be inhaled and can cause serious health problems. In addition, improper removal can also contaminate the surrounding area and make it unsafe for other people to enter.

Asbestos Identification Services: How They Safeguard Your Property
When considering the safety of our properties, asbestos is a concern that can’t be ignored. As someone invested in ensuring a safe environment, I’ve found that asbestos identification services play a crucial role in protecting both health and property. Knowing where asbestos is located enables us to make informed choices and avoid potential risks.
Tumblr media
Why Asbestos Remains a Hidden Hazard
Asbestos was used extensively in building materials for its durability and resistance to heat. However, we now understand that disturbed asbestos fibres pose serious health risks when inhaled, leading to diseases such as mesothelioma and lung cancer. Without proper asbestos identification services, asbestos could go undetected in older properties, putting occupants at risk during maintenance or renovation.
What Do Asbestos Identification Services Offer?
Asbestos identification services involve a systematic inspection of the property, focusing on materials known to contain asbestos. The process typically includes:
Visual Inspection: Certified specialists conduct a thorough inspection, looking for signs of asbestos in common areas, such as roofing, insulation, and flooring.
Sample Analysis: Suspected materials are collected and analysed by trained professionals in a laboratory setting. This testing confirms the presence and type of asbestos, which is vital for determining the appropriate management or removal strategy.
Comprehensive Reporting: The identification service provides a detailed report highlighting any asbestos found, its concentration, and specific location within the building. This information is essential for anyone planning renovations or repairs.
How Asbestos Identification Protects Your Property
Prevents Contamination: By identifying asbestos before any work begins, we can take steps to contain it, preventing fibres from contaminating the air or nearby areas.
Enables Safe Management Plans: A comprehensive asbestos report allows us to make an informed plan for managing or removing asbestos materials. This proactive approach is especially important for maintaining the value and safety of a property.
Compliance with Legal Standards: In New Zealand, asbestos identification is required for properties built before 2000, particularly in commercial spaces. Engaging in these services ensures compliance with health and safety regulations.
When Should You Consider Asbestos Identification Services?
These services are crucial during property transactions, renovations, or demolitions, as they provide a clear understanding of any potential asbestos risks. For older properties, regular inspections are also recommended to monitor and manage any asbestos-containing materials.
Conclusion: A Proactive Approach to Property Safety
Asbestos identification services are invaluable for protecting our properties and the people who live and work within them. By identifying asbestos and understanding where it exists, we can take the necessary steps to keep our environment safe, compliant, and free from hidden dangers. Investing in these services offers peace of mind and ensures a safer space for everyone involved.
