I see a lot of people making meanspirited jokes about terms that they don't understand because they seem ridiculous, but in those jokes it's obvious that they don't even want to try to understand either otherwise they would have asked instead of outright saying it's ridiculous and mocking it.

But if you actually ask someone who identifies that way you get a very thoughtful and introspective explanation that sometimes challenges your our preconceptions of X thing (gender, sexuality, etc etc). But only if you even cared to be a little curious.
