February 1, 2021: Dirty Dancing (1987)
There are two people to credit for the beginning of this month. The first is my girlfriend, who asked that I represent her with this GIF.
Tumblr media
Thank you, dear. Anyway, this is one of her favorite romance films, and she’s also not a big romance movie person. She was shocked that I hadn’t seen it, and that’s because of the second person to credit here: my Mom.
Tumblr media
That is my Mom in the late ‘80s with her Pomeranian, Pugsley. Yup. This is just the GODDAMN SURFACE of my Mom, who’s quirky as shit. Love her for it, though. But, OK, why is my Mom involved here? Because this is also one of her favorite films. My Dad’s, too, but I’ll talk more about him in April.
However, if you read the Romance February introduction from yesterday, you might be wondering something. If my Mom’s taste in romance movies was so prevalent in my early life, how in the hell have I never seen this movie, one of her favorites? Especially considering the fact that, TMI here, but I WAS BORN TO THE FILM’S SOUNDTRACK. YES. REALLY. HOW HAVE I ESCAPED THIS MOVIE?
Tumblr media
Yup. No clue. Shall we remedy that? SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Recap
Tumblr media
It’s 1963 in the Catskills, where Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey), a politically conscious young woman on her way into the Peace Corps, is going on vacation with her parents, Jake and Majorie Houseman (Jerry Orbach and Kelly Bishop), and her sister, Lisa (Jane Brucker). The owner, Max Kellerman (Jack Weston), who’s a friend of the Housemans, welcomes them to the resort.
Later that night, Max is briefing the young male waiters and entertainment, all of whom are hired from Ivy League universities. Well...except for the intriguing young dance instructor in the sunglasses. THAT...would be Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze).
Tumblr media
I wanna just say before I forget, I miss Patrick Swayze. He’s awesome, and he left far too soon.
The next night, during dinner, Max introduces Baby to his grandson, Neil (Lonny Price), who’s just graduated from Cornell’s Hotel Management school. A school which, for the record, is the best hotel school in the USA, and second or third in the world. Also, hotelies (that’s what we called them) are CRAZY. They’re an interesting...bunch...
I, uh... I went to CornellMOVING ON
Tumblr media
As Neil awkwardly hits on Baby, everybody encourages them having a relationship, despite her CLEARLY not wanting any of this. She instead watches Johnny skillfully mambo with another girl on center floor. After being roped into a magic act by Neil, and given a chicken by Stan (Wayne Knight, which I’m a fan of), she leaves, annoyed and irritated.
On her way back, she sees Johnny’s cousin, Billy (Neal Jones) struggling with a few GIGANTIC watermelons. She offers to help him, and he brings her to a secret house party, where some dancing’s happening. Some...dirty dancing.
Tumblr media
Interesting side note here: racial integration! In 1963, remember, so that’s interesting. I mean, if anybody’s a fan of that, it’s gonna be me. At the party, Johnny arrives with Penny Johnson (Cynthia Rhodes), his dance partner from the mambo floor. Johnny sees her there, and questions her presence, to which she makes an adorably awkward comment. And then...they do a dance of their own.
The next day, Lisa makes a love connection with one of the waiters, and asks Baby to cover for her. Baby also speaks to Penny, who doesn’t come from the best background. That night, Penny’s missing, and Neil gives Cornell students just the WORST goddamn name as he very awkwardly hits on Baby. He takes her to the kitchen, and that’s where Baby sees Penny.
Tumblr media
Yeah, Penny’s not OK. Baby goes to Billy and Johnny, who go to get her. Turns out Penny’s pregnant, but Johnny’s not the father. They’re obviously quite close, although they aren’t romantically tangled. Baby, coming from a place of much higher privilege, doesn’t quite understand how difficult this is. Penny berates her for this, and it’s revealed that the father is Robbie Gould (Max Cantor), one of the waiters, who’s also the guy that’s been hanging around Lisa.
Tumblr media
Baby confronts him the following day, where he states that “Some people count, some people don’t.” He also offers her a copy of The Fountainhead, a well-known book for complete and utter douchenozzles. She warns him to stay away from her sister, then goes to ask her father for money for the abortion. Which, by the way, was very illegal in 1963. She gets the money from her dad, who gives it without asking many questions.
Tumblr media
However, there’s an issue; Johnny and Penny have to dance on the only night she can get the abortion. And there’s nobody to replace her...except maybe Baby? Johnny’s entirely against it, they end up convincing him, for Penny’s sake. And now, we get a hallmark of ‘80s cinema: the training montage.
This is a pretty good time to note three things. One, Jennifer Grey is the daughter of Joel Grey, one of the GREATEST actor/dancers ever to grace Hollywood and Broadway. Dude was one of the main characters in Cabaret, for which he won an Oscar, and originated the role of the Wizard of Oz in Wicked. So, yeah, she’s got dancing blood. Secondly, Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey apparently HATED each other. Yeah, kind of a bummer. But their chemistry was SO GODDAMN POWERFUL, that they were able to push through their feelings and do this as well as they are. And third...THIS SOUNDTRACK BOPS.
youtube
I get it. I GET IT.
Something else I get, too. The chemistry between Grey and Swayze really does sizzle, GODDAMN. Over the course of the montage, they clearly get closer emotionally...and physically. And yeah, it’s definitely there. Although, given the fact that they’re from different class backgrounds, it’s probably gonna be one of those stories. Well, OK. Let’s do it.
After a little too much time practicing, the two take a break. And yet, while on a nature excursion, they continue their training in different environments. Most iconically, they practice lifts in the lake.
Tumblr media
Yeah...yeah, I get it.
The day approaches, and Baby and Penny have a bit of a heart-to-heart. Penny asks Lisa to cover for her (and I’m betting that she won’t, LIKE AN ASSHOLE), and she heads to the dance gig. It mostly goes OK, but the lift is aborted at the last second. However, the performance is still received well. They leave JUST before an elderly couple from the resort sees them.
Johnny gives her a pep-talk, telling her that she did well, and the music on the car radio hints at their growing mutual attraction. But once they get there, tragedy’s struck. Turns out that the abortion doctor was a dangerous quack, and Penny’s now dangerous injured, in pain and possibly dying. Panicking, Baby does THE RIGHT THING, I can’t stress that enough, THE RIGHT GODDAMN THING, and gets her doctor father.
Tumblr media
Understandably upset (and yeah, it is understandable, all things considered), Dr. Houseman forbids Baby from seeing Johnny or any of the others ever again. This situation...sucks. Damn. And Baby agrees, as she sneaks off to see Johnny anyway. She apologizes to Johnny for how her father treated her, but Johnny blames his own social status for it, rather than her father.
Their conversation becomes very real, and eventually turns into Baby declaring her love for Johnny. As a song comes on the radio, she asks him to dance with her. Giving in to his own feelings, he agrees. And together they engage in some...Dirty Dancing.
Tumblr media
As the two dirty dance horizontally, the night turns to day. That morning, things are definitely awkward between Baby and her father, who almost takes his family away that night. But, his wife and Lisa convince him to stay. He even comes back to visit Penny, checking in to make sure she’s alright, which Baby finds out once she does the same.
Things are also a little awkward between Baby and Johnny, interestingly. Wonder how last night ended. Well, Penny figures it out, and warns Johnny about the risks off getting involved with the upper class. Which, remember, is how she ended up this way. The two have a tense-but-intimate exchange. Which just preludes this IMMEDIATELY happening.
Tumblr media
Yeah, that’s not a surprise. Well, more heart-to-heart proceeds, and they continue to learn about each other’s lives. That night, Lisa tells Baby that she wants to go all the way with Robbie. Despite Baby’s warnings, Lisa simply tells her off, and is generally, I’ll be honest, a bitch. The next morning, though, Baby and Johnny have another dance session. And it’s THAT session. You know the one.
youtube
Neil interrupts, and proceeds to give a bad name to Cornellians everywhere (I’m not like that putz, I SWEAR), and pisses off Johnny in the process. She asks why he didn’t stand up for himself, and then immediately hides Johnny from her father, who’s walking with Robbie and Lisa. Rightfully calling her a hypocrite, he storms off.
And then they immediately resolve it. Which, GODDAMN, do I appreciate. Robbie strolls by, makes a typical crass comment about Baby, and then Johnny BEATS THE EVER-LOVING SHIT OUT OF HIM
Tumblr media
OH FUCK YES. And if that wasn’t enough catharsis, Lisa catches Robbie with one of the high society wives from earlier, as they sleep together in a cabin. OH. YES. THAT’S SOME GOOOOOOOOOOOOD SHIT.
Baby and Johnny, in the actual good and fully-developed relationship of this movie, spend the night together. And are seen the next morning by the high society wife, who had the hots for Johnny.
Tumblr media
The wife, Vivian (Miranda Garrison), implicates Johnny in stealing a wallet. Johnny’s about to be fired, and then BABY ADMITS THAT THEY WERE TOGETHER IN FRONT OF HER FATHER HOLY FUCK
She did it. She actually did it. Goddamn. And then, AND THEN, she TELLS HER FATHER OFF AND CALLS HER OUT FOR HIS ELITISM HOLY FUCKING SHIT I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS MOVIE. And then, Jerry Orbach fuckin’ starts tearing up, and I AM SHOOK MOTHERFUCKER
Tumblr media
And yet, even though the wallets were actually stolen by an elderly couple that Baby actually implicated, Johnny gets fired anyway. GODDAMN. After Baby completely loses heart, Johnny confronts her father, and learns that he believes that he was the one who got Penny pregnant. Johnny semi-tells him off, then walks away.
At his car, Johnny and Baby say goodbye with a kiss, and Johnny heads off forever. I mean, probably not, there’s a good 16 minutes left, and we haven’t gotten to the most iconic scene of the film yet. But anyway, Baby mourns her lost relationship, and her sister actually bonds with her over this whole thing. Hot damn.
Tumblr media
I want to punch Neil in the goddamn face. Mostly just because he’s on screen, but also because he LITERALLY ruins the goddamn anthem of Cornell University, by setting the anthem for the resort against its melody. Goddamn you, Neil. GODDAMN YOU. Also, fuck Robbie, because he LITERALLY OUTS HIMSELF to Dr. Houseman as Penny’s former deadbeat partner. As the anthem continues (to my rage), who shows up but Johnny, who comes to stick up for Baby and all she’s done.
He brings her up on stage, and interrupts the anthem (THANK YOU CHRIST) to perform the last dance of the season, as he always does. Despite Dr. Houseman’s would-be objections (prevented by his wife, who has moved up on my list of favorite characters), the two are left alone on stage. And that...is when the song plays. YOU KNOW THE GODDAMN SONG
youtube
Y’know, it’s funny, because this song is definitely an ‘80s song, making this whole sequence pretty goddamn anachronistic, but WHO CARES!? It’s one of the most iconic sequences in film history, especially of the era, and I love the hell out of it. The crowd cheers, the rest of the kids join in, the lift happens, father and daughter make up, everybody dances, I dance with my girlfriend, I LOVE IT! They kiss, they dance and the film fades to black.
Dirty Dancing! See you in the Review! Oh, I’m changing the name of that section, by the way. Alongside a few more things. You’ll see.

Stacie turns away, striding with purpose toward the front door. Beca knows she’s going to the garage, where the gas is stored with the lawnmower.
From beside her, Chloe makes a soft sound of distress. Beca looks over and is startled by how pale Chloe looks. Her eyes slide out of focus and she sways on her feet.
“Woah, hey—” Beca says, reaching out to steady her. “Chlo, deep breaths, okay, you need to—”
“Bec, what—” Chloe gasps, her eyes wide as they dart around the room. “The house, we can’t just…” she trails off, pressing her hand to her mouth.
“I know,” Beca breathes, heart twisting at the thought of losing their home. “I know. But if we do it, this ends. We’ll be safe.”
Chloe shakes her head, hand still at her mouth and eyes welling with tears.
“Chloe, we have to, okay? It’s—it’s just a house. We’ll be safe, and that’s what matters, right?”
Chloe gulps, and for a moment, Beca isn’t sure she’d even heard her.
“Chl—”
“Okay,” Chloe manages shakily, blinking hard. “Okay. We—we have to tell the others.”
“Okay,” Beca breathes back, looking around them. She can still hear Lilly fighting the three clones upstairs, and she’s not sure where anyone else is. “Let’s… kitchen?” she asks, gesturing that way.
Chloe nods and they move, having to pick their way over the sitting room floor littered with shredded chunks of couch, smashed picture frames, and strewn ornaments. Out of the corner of her eye, Beca sees Chloe bend down and pick up one of the photos from its broken frame. Chloe folds the photo, carefully sliding it into her pocket.
Beca glances away, and her stomach pangs; she catches sight of a body lying half-obscured behind the ruined couch, wearing Amy’s clothes.
“No,” she whispers numbly, moving toward the immobile form, looking for a bracelet on her wrist.
Before she can get close enough, though, she hears a, “Psst!” and looks over her shoulder automatically. Amy stands in the doorway of the kitchen, her arm lifted to show the blue yarn adorning her wrist.
“You’re okay,” Beca sighs in relief.
Amy nods sagely. “Takes more than that to take down my sexy fat ass.”
Beca glances over her shoulder at the body of Amy’s clone on the floor and winces.  “What did you do to her?”
“Bashed her with a picture frame,” Amy replies as Chloe joins them. “She wasn’t going to get up after that.”
“Amy,” Chloe says quickly. “We need to find the others and tell them—Stacie is—”
“Going for the gas, yeah,” Amy grimaces. “Cynthia Rose told us. We’re in here. Um, it’s not pretty,” she adds, stepping aside and giving them room to enter the kitchen.
Beca swallows hard and locks eyes with Chloe for a second, not sure what to expect. She crosses the threshold, entering the kitchen a little cautiously.
The first thing she registers is Emily, wearing her bracelet, and being violently sick into the trash can. Ashley and Jessica sit with her, Ashley holding her hair and Jessica rubbing her back soothingly. Cynthia Rose is there, too, with a cut on her forearm that Flo works to bandage.
“You’re all okay,” Chloe breathes, her eyes scanning the room.
“Relatively,” Cynthia Rose grunts.
“Emily?” Beca asks her quietly.
Still, Emily hears her and looks up, wiping her mouth weakly on a kitchen rag. “I had to… I didn’t want to, but she was attacking me and—” she cuts off, going pale, and ducks back down to the trash can to be sick again.
Flo cringes, her face wrinkling in sympathy. “She had to kill Stacie,” she whispers.
“What?” Chloe gasps.
“Stacie’s clone,” Amy clarifies. “In here. Stacie’s clone was attacking her, and—well, Legacy didn’t have a choice.”
“I tried to help,” Cynthia Rose mutters. “That’s how I got this,” she adds, gesturing to the cut on her arm. “Stacie’s clone had a knife, but we got it away from her. Emily went for the kitchen knives while the clone went after me and… well. Emily won.”
Chloe makes a small, scared noise. “Wh—where’s the body?” she asks after a moment, her voice hushed. “The clone?”
Jessica’s lip curled. “We threw it in the pantry. Didn’t want to look at it.”
“Yeah, Emily’s a little… well, what do you expect?” Flo asks almost defensively.
Beca stares at Emily’s still-heaving back. She’s just a kid, really. It isn’t fair.
She walks over to Emily, waits for a pause in the heaving, and kneels beside her. “Emily,” she says gently, getting her attention.
Emily glances at her, a light sheen of sweat covering her face.
“Hey, dude,” Beca begins. “I’m really, really sorry. I’m so sorry you had to do that. But, listen... if you hadn’t—hadn’t stopped Stacie’s clone, Cynthia Rose might be dead. You might be, too.”
Emily’s eyes shine and her chin quivers, but she nods once.
“So, um,” Beca continues quietly, “I can’t even imagine what… look, you did what you had to do, okay? The real Stacie is okay. She’s in the garage, right now, figuring out how to save us. You did the right thing,” Beca emphasizes. She has no idea if she’s doing this right at all—this is really much more Chloe’s domain—but she needs Emily to understand.
A small, pained smile flickers on Emily’s lips. “Thanks, Beca,” she says softly, her voice hoarse. Her eyes flick to Beca’s wrist and she frowns. “Amy said you lost your bracelet?”
“Yeah, both Chloe and I did,” Beca says. “We can just make new ones.”
“Maybe not with yarn,” Jessica suggests.
“Oh, here,” Flo says impatiently, moving toward her and Chloe with the first aid kit. She quickly wraps Chloe’s arm in clean white bandages, cutting the end and taping it securely. She does the same to Beca; it feels much more secure than the bracelet. Giving an experimental tug on the bandage, Beca can tell it won’t come off easily.
“Thanks, Flo,” Chloe says, watching Beca.
“Yeah, thanks,” Beca echoes.
Flo rolls her eyes, looking pleased with herself. “Should have thought of that sooner.”
“So, okay,” Chloe says, looking around. “You guys already know the plan. We just have to corner the clones all in one spot. Um, where are—”
“Flo’s and Lilly’s are trapped in the basement, so we should bring the rest there. Don’t know where they are, though,” Cynthia Rose answers.
“Ours and Aubrey is upstairs, so maybe the rest—”
Chloe is cut off by a sudden loud shouting upstairs that startles Beca; she’d half-forgotten Lilly had been up there fighting. The shouts are immediately followed by a huge tumbling sound that seems to echo in the kitchen, a series of deep thuds that somehow draw closer before stopping. Then, silence.
Ashley frowns. “What—”
“The stairs!” Chloe gasps, grabbing Beca’s arm. “Someone fell down the stairs.”
“Shit, Lilly,” Beca swears, and without another thought, she and Chloe are moving again.
They rush out of the kitchen, chased by the sound of scraping of chairs and footsteps as the rest of the Bellas follow. Once again, they cross the ruined sitting room and reach the foot of the stairs where—
Chloe cries out and Beca stops abruptly, rooted to the floor by what she sees.
“Oh my God,” Chloe murmurs beside her, hands again covering her mouth. “Oh my God. Her neck. Bec, look at her neck.”
Beca can’t stop looking. Nausea rolls her stomach and she has to take a deep breath, steadying herself.
Her own clone lies at the foot of the stairs, clearly dead, her neck twisted at an unnatural angle. Broken. The clone’s eyes are open, staring blankly at all of their feet.
Beca forces her eyes away from her own face on the floor, looking up the stairs to where Lilly stands staring down at them and the body. Aubrey’s and Chloe’s clones are somewhere up there, too, possibly having retreated after Lilly shoved Beca’s clone down the stairs.
A choked sob from next to her grabs Beca’s attention; she looks over, startled to see Chloe staring down at the body of her clone, tears running down her face.
“Shit, Chlo…” Beca breathes. “Hey, it’s… she’s not—”
Amy clears her throat loudly, giving Beca a pointed look.
“Uh, come here,” Beca urges somewhat awkwardly, gently guiding Chloe by the elbow back into the sitting room. Behind her, she can hear the other Bellas whispering and shuffling, maybe moving the clone’s body, but she tunes them out.
Chloe’s shaking and pale. The faraway look in her eyes scares Beca almost more than anything else she’s experienced with the clones.
“Hey, it’s okay,” she says to Chloe softly. “She’s not me. I’m okay.”
Chloe nods jerkily but doesn’t say anything.
An insane idea hits Beca. She knows she’ll probably be slapped or maybe screamed at. But it’s the only thing she can think of to reassure Chloe that it’s her.
She steps forward, her hands on Chloe’s waist, and kisses her.
For a heartbeat, nothing happens.
Then Chloe inhales sharply against the press of Beca’s lips, pulling back an inch.
Beca’s heart stutters and for a moment, she’s terrified she’d made the wrong move. Before she can apologize, though, or maybe flee the country, Chloe leans in again to close the gap she’d created between their lips.
Kissing Chloe is even better than she’d imagined. It’s all soft lips and gentle pressure, Chloe’s hands in her hair and nose bumping her cheek. It’s a soft sigh and the click of something in her chest that reminds her of empty pools and soft smiles, whisking her away from the present until all she can think is Chloe and the word finally.
Kissing Chloe is everything.
“Guys! Incoming!”
Cynthia Rose’s shout of warning makes Beca jerk back, startled. She’d managed to forget that they were essentially in the middle of a war zone, and, based on the surprise on Chloe’s face, so had she.
“Basement, now!” Stacie, reappeared from the garage, shouts over a thunderous noise that Beca realizes is coming from the stairs.
Understanding hits her like a freight train; she grabs Chloe’s hand and together they move, hurrying past the foot of the stairs and following the other Bellas to the basement. Beca makes the mistake of looking over her shoulder as they go; the remaining clones, led by Chloe’s and Aubrey’s, pound down the stairs from the second floor in chase.
The Bellas lead the way, Amy wrenching open the door to the basement. Lilly’s and Flo’s clones wait for them at the top of the steps but are bowled over backward as the Bellas all charge into the dank depths of the house. Beca and Chloe follow closely, the clones on their heels as they hurry down the basement steps, trying to lure the clones after them to get them all in one place.
It works almost too well.
As soon as Beca and Chloe hit the basement floor, the clones are upon them. She only has enough time to see Cynthia Rose’s clone attack Lilly, Lilly’s clone make a beeline for Emily, and Aubrey’s lunge at Chloe before she’s once again tackled, her assailant going for her legs.
She lands on the floor hard enough for the wind to be knocked out of her; Chloe’s clone smiles wickedly from on top of her. She’s missing a contact lens, one eye blue and the other amber, and her face is covered in scratches, souvenirs from her fight with Lilly. She looks deranged and doesn’t even pause to brag as she raises a hammer above Beca’s face.
Instinctively, Beca bucks her hips up and rolls, managing to throw the clone off balance. Beca flails, sending a fist straight to the clone’s stomach. The hammer falls to the left of Beca’s face, landing on the floor with a deafening clatter, and Beca writhes. She manages to dislodge Chloe’s clone completely and scrambles back rapidly, struggling to get to her feet.
Chloe’s clone follows, crawling after her on her hands and knees unnaturally. She’s faster than Beca is and is almost on top of her again before Beca remembers her legs. She kicks out hard, catching Chloe’s clone in the face with her boot. The clone cries out and jerks back, clutching her now-bleeding mouth.
Beca takes the opportunity to push herself up, rising to her feet, and her gaze falls on the dropped hammer. The clone’s eyes flick toward it as well.
Then they lock eyes, and everything seems to pause.
The clone moves first, throwing herself toward the hammer.
“No!” Beca shouts, lunging at the hammer. She knocks Chloe’s clone’s arm out of the way, her fingers wrapping around the hammer’s grip even as the clone’s fingernails scrabble at the back of her hand uselessly. Beca swings the hammer upward reflexively, striking the clone in the shoulder with the tool and making her fall back.
Panting, her heart racing in her chest, Beca forces herself back to her feet. She looks down at the injured clone, wincing and bloody on the floor, and knows what she has to do. Steeling herself, Beca raises the hammer, takes a step forward, and—
“Bec, don’t!” Chloe’s clone cries, raising her hands in pathetic self-defense. “Please!”
In that instant, it’s Chloe on the floor in front of her, defenseless.
Beca hesitates.
Chloe’s clone moves faster than Beca would have thought possible. She kicks out at Beca, catching her hard in the left knee. Beca’s leg goes out and she crumples but manages to hold onto the hammer. It doesn’t matter; the clone pulls a shard of glass—taken from Chloe’s broken window—from her boot and raises it.
“Bye, Bec,” Chloe’s clone smiles at her sweetly, her expression turning wicked.
There’s nothing Beca can do.
“Hey!” a voice shouts, and the real Chloe is suddenly there, the basement fire extinguisher in hand.
The clone only has time to glance at her in surprise before Chloe swings the red canister, hitting the clone directly in the head with a sickening thud. The clone drops, but Chloe isn’t done. She hits her again, and again, and again, until Beca has to reach out to stop her.
“Chloe! Chloe, stop, she’s—just stop!” she says, grabbing one of Chloe’s arms.
Chloe turns to her, fire in her eyes. For a second, Beca is terrified. Chloe isn’t violent. Not like this.
The fire slowly fades as Chloe comes back to herself, melting into something like exhaustion. She looks at the bloodied fire extinguisher in her hands in revulsion, immediately throwing it down to the floor.
“Chloe?” Beca repeats softly. “It’s—you got her. It’s done.”
She doesn’t need to look at the body of the clone on the floor behind Chloe to know it.
Chloe nods, her throat bobbing. “You’re okay?” she asks, her eyes flicking between both of Beca’s.
“Yeah,” Beca says, ignoring the screaming of her muscles. “Thanks for that.”
Chloe exhales shakily. “I don’t know if—I hit Aubrey’s clone, too, but I don’t know if she’s just knocked out.”
“That’s okay,” Beca replies quickly, looking around at the fight surrounding them and catching sight of Aubrey’s clone lying motionless on the floor. “We should—”
A loud series of pops, echoing around the walls of the basement like gunfire, interrupts her. Beca jumps, looking for the source automatically to see firecrackers exploding on the basement floor, sending shrapnel spraying into the air. Someone must have lit up what’s left of their Independence Day stock.
“GO!!” Stacie bellows above the chaos, and Beca understands. It’s their distraction.
The Bellas all fly for the stairs leading out of the basement; Ashley, Jessica, and Emily take the lead, followed closely by Flo, Lilly, Stacie, and Cynthia Rose. Amy looks back to make sure Beca and Chloe are following before running up the stairs, too.
The remaining clones—Lilly’s, Flo’s, Emily’s, and Cynthia Rose’s—chase after Beca and Chloe, but are too slow. Beca shoves Chloe ahead of her, rushing them both up the rickety wooden steps at top speed. She feels the clones behind her, hears their steps, but ahead she sees the landing, sees the others running out the front door and to safety.
A hand grabs at her ankle; Beca trips and almost falls. She shouts, and Chloe and Amy are with her instantly. They both grab Beca’s arms and tug; Beca glances over her shoulder to see Aubrey’s clone, a welt on her forehead from where Chloe had hit her. Chloe and Amy give Herculean effort, pulling her forward. Beca’s shoe comes off in Aubrey’s hand as she’s hauled to safety, pulled through the doorway to the basement and deposited on the floor.
Amy releases her and slams the basement door closed behind them, throwing her weight against it and locking it. A huge scraping noise fills the room and Beca looks over her shoulder to see Stacie, Cynthia Rose, and Emily shoving at the refrigerator, forcing it across the floor and to the basement door. Chloe moves quickly to help, and together, they get it in position. Amy moves and the heavy refrigerator takes her place, barricading the door and trapping the remaining clones in the basement.
The sour pang of gasoline fills Beca’s nose; Ashley and Jessica are already dousing the walls and floors with it, throwing the liquid over the stairs and over the bodies of the Beca’s and Amy’s clones.
“Beca,” Chloe says loudly, her face close to Beca’s. “We need to get out, now.”
“I…” Talking about burning the house had been much easier than seeing it in action. It’s happening too quickly.
“I know,” Chloe breathes, her eyes sparkling with tears. “But we have to go.”
Beca looks around one more time but is unable to see anything but the damage inflicted to the house in the fight. “Okay,” she says, taking Chloe’s hand.
Together, they rush out, joining the other Bellas waiting outside. Ashley and Jessica follow a moment later, pouring the gas behind them in a trail that stops several yards away from where the Bellas gather. They hurry to join the group, and Beca does a quick headcount; all of the Bellas are there, and all are wearing their bracelets, or, in hers and Chloe’s case, bandages.
“Lilly?” Stacie asks, and without ceremony, Lilly moves toward the trail of gas and ignites it with a lighter she seems to pull from thin air.
The flames move quickly, blooming to existence with a whoosh, fed by the trail of gas. The fire speeds toward the house, disappearing into the open front door. Within seconds, the interior of the house glows orange, heat and light spilling out. The glass in the windows shatters, and the Bellas move farther back as black smoke starts billowing out of the house.
They watch in silence as the flames spread, taking over the ground floor. Beca knows that before long, the other floors will be engulfed, taking their every possession, and putting an end to the clones. She imagines briefly that she can hear the screaming from the basement, but shuts down that thought almost as quickly as it forms.
Nothing feels real in that moment. It’s like she’s floating far above the scene, watching an unfamiliar group of girls burn an unknown house.
Beca drags a ragged breath through her lips, feeling but not registering the heat of the flames against her face.
Then Chloe’s hand finds hers, grounding her, bringing her back to her own body with a thud. Beca holds tight, not wanting to float away again. Chloe shifts beside her, and Beca looks over to see her pulling out the picture she’d saved from the wreckage. Chloe unfolds it and stares down at it.
It’s a group photo of the Bellas immediately after winning Nationals at the end of freshman year. Even as Beca stares at the photo, a droplet of water splashes on one corner as Chloe silently cries, tears running down her face.
A lump forms in Beca’s throat and her eyes sting; she has to look back at the fire.
Sirens already sound in the distance, but Beca knows it’ll be too late to save anything by the time the firetrucks arrive. Ashley and Jessica had done a good job with the gasoline.
She squeezes Chloe’s hand, just once.
Chloe exhales shakily, tracing her thumb over the back of Beca’s hand. “It’s okay,” she murmurs. “It’s over.”

Chapter 28
I awoke to a soft and warm sensation inching slowly up the side of my thigh. I was drunk with sleep and could barely comprehend what was going on. This thing, this hand, continued to creep further up the length of my leg and I squeezed my eyes shut with hopes that the feeling would go away. Eventually, I felt a body straddle me and I held my breath as whoever the person was leaned forward and aligned their face with mine then placed their lips just centimeters from my ear “Merry Christmas Hope. Wake up and let’s go see what Santa left under the tree.”
The voice was deep and sounded disturbingly familiar and I could no longer resist the urge to snatch my eyes open. I stared into a pair of striking emerald orbs and jerked my body up to get Destani off of me. She fell backwards on my bed and laughed hysterically along with Tameka who emerged from her hiding spot at the foot of the bed. I tried to maintain a straight and irritated expression, but failed miserably and couldn't help but laugh “Dez, why would you do that?” “Oh my… girl! That was too funny… I had to do it. Me and Meka was up planning that shit last night and I just had to do it.” She huffed. “And you can’t lie,” Tameka chimed in from the edge of the bed through her hearty laughter, “She sounded exactly like Chris, I mean exactly. She was up all night tryna imitate that nigga and she finally got it. That was good boo!” She slapped her hand together with Destani’s and they both continued to cackle.
I shook my head and climbed out of bed, reaching down to grab my pajama pants from the floor. “Damn girl, that ass lookin right though!” I swung around, caught off guard once again by the sound of that voice, but frowned and squinted at Destani as she doubled over with laughter against Tameka who laughed right along with her. Once I finally managed to calm the two down, we were finally on our way out of my room and down the stairs to the den.
Much to my surprise, Ms. Joyce, Tootie, Desean, Ms. Cynthia, and Imani were all in the den each with bright and shining faces. They were all sitting and conversing, waiting for the three of us to come downstairs so that we could open gifts. My eyes roamed throughout the den and I promptly spotted Chris perched comfortably on the arm of the loveseat with Desean planted on his knee and Imani cuddled up next to him on the couch. He seemed to be deeply engaged in conversation with them and I couldn’t help but smile at the sight. The kids were both absolutely thrilled about the plethora of gifts Santa had left for them under the tree. Chris seemed more than excited to partake in their banter and he bounced lightly in his seat as he spoke, with Desean giggling at his every move.
As if on cue, Chris raised his glossy eyed gaze from his discussion with the kids and instantly locked eyes with me. He stared with a curious smirk before turning his attention back to the kids as they both tapped at his shoulders, searching desperately for his attention. “Alright ya’ll… are we ready to start opening these gifts?” My aunt asked as she stood from her spot on the long couch. Forgetting all about their conversation, Desean jumped down from Chris’s lap, Imani leapt from the couch and they both bolted toward the gifts, only to be halted abruptly by Chris’s hands latched onto the backs of their pj’s.
“How about you two calm down before you either hurt yourselves or tip the tree over.” He said with a tone full of mirth. “Boy you know you used to do the same thing when you were little, up until about last year. You probably about ready to take off for them gifts too… you just don’t want everybody in here to see you acting like a little boy.” Ms. Joyce said, resulting in a son with blushing cheeks and a room full of laughter. Chris continued to pull the kids back until they were sitting on the couch and he walked over to retrieve a gift for each of them..
--
Later in the afternoon, everyone was dressed and ready for the day as more people began to arrive at the house. My aunt, Ms. Joyce, and Ms. Cynthia had all ventured off to the kitchen to prepare the feast, leaving Destani, Tameka, Chris and I in the den to entertain the kids and our guests. I found myself deeply absorbed and focused in a race against Desean with a race car set that his uncle had gotten for him. He happened to share a passion with Chris that I would never really understand… they were both infatuated with cars. And of course Chris thought the most sensible gift to get for his nephew was the Carrera Evolution Porsche GT3 Challenge set that I’d helped him pick out months ago.
With it costing well over two hundred dollars, I was skeptical about playing with it at first, but because Desean had inherited the persistent and convincing habits of his uncle, I couldn’t help but give in to his charm. The two of us had even drawn spectators with the commotion of the race. “Yes! I beat you again Sy! You owe me five dollars.” Desean shouted, bouncing up and down on his knees and throwing his little arms around in the air after his riotous defeat. Playfully rolling my eyes, I crossed my arms over my chest and smirked “Whatever De… you cheated anyway. I saw you move your car up right before we started.” “Nuh-unh… don’t be a sore loser. Just give me the money and I won't rub it in your face that I won two times.” He exclaimed with two fingers held high in the air. “Fine,” I sighed exasperatedly, “Just remind me to pay you later because I don’t have five dollars right now.” “Okay… I won’t let you forget.” He said somberly, causing us to all laugh.
“Man chill, you know you cheating!” Within seconds we’d all turned our attention to the entertainment center, where Dontay and Chris sat nearby on the floor engaged in a pretty serious game of Madden on Chris’s new Play Station. I laughed at the sight of Dontay pointing frantically at the television screen and yelling in Chris’s face, as Chris sat there smirking innocently as if he hadn’t done a thing wrong. “Nobody is cheating Don,” He stated calmly as he turned to face Dontay,” You… just… suck.” Dontay tossed his controller down on the floor and crossed his arms over his chest with a deep scowl “And you owe me ten.” Chris added, still staring at him with a victorious smirk.
“No I don’t B… for what man?” Dontay whined. “Dude, you know we made a bet right before we started this game. Don’t sit here and play like you forgot… just run me my money and we won’t have no problems.” He placed a hand against Dontay’s shoulder and shook it before pushing himself up from the floor and walking over to the race track. “Uncle C, look,” Desean hopped up from the floor and rushed toward Chris, jetting a finger out behind him to show off the evidence that he’d won his race against me, “I won and Diyah owes me five whole dollars!”
With a glance in my direction, Chris swiped his tongue out over his bottom lip and smirked “I told you. If you just listen to your uncle man… you’ll always win.” “You really told him to sit here and beat this girl out of five dollars like that?” Destani asked as she stared at Chris with her mouth agape. “No, I taught him how to be a winner. He won… so now he gets his money.” He smiled impishly and reached out to slap hands with Desean before turning and walking out of the den.
--
The sound of the doorbell nearly went unheard over the commotion from the dining room table as we all enjoyed the lovely Christmas feast. Excusing myself from the table, I quickly made my way to the front door because I had a small inkling of who it was… I didn’t bother to bite back my grin the moment I opened it to find Trey standing handsomely on the porch totting a box and gift bag. “Hi,” I squealed, throwing myself halfway out the door to grip him into a hug, “I didn’t think you were coming.” “Why wouldn’t I baby girl?” He whispered as he plunged his face into the side of the bushel of curls atop my head. “I don’t know. I just didn’t think you would.” I blushed. “Well no need to worry… I’m here now.” He pulled away to peer down at me and quickly leaned forward to deliver a quick, sweet peck to my lips.
“Do you want these now or later?” He asked, trailing along behind me into the house. Once I locked the door, I turned to see that he stood only a few feet behind me holding up the box and the bag. “Oh, um… later. I still have to get your gift… it’s up in my room.” I said before directing him into the den and showing him where he could place the gifts. Once he placed them in their rightful place, I showed him to the kitchen and didn’t slow down for a moment from my eagerness to consider just who was sitting at the kitchen table...
With Trey standing proudly at my side, we marched into the kitchen and he instantly caught the attention of my aunt who rushed forward from the table to greet him. “How you doing sweetheart? Have you eaten anything today, are you hungry? We got plenty of food here, go ahead and help yourself to whatever you want.” She placed a hand against his shoulder and tenderly pushed him forward toward the food, barely giving him time to reciprocate her greeting. There was an unmistakable burning glare coming from the other side of the room and I instinctively raised my gaze in that direction, immediately regretting it the moment my eyes landed on those piercing golden orbs.
Chris had just rotated his blank stare from Trey to me, all the while remaining cold in his posture. I could sense the resentment in his glare and if looks could kill, Trey and I would have been out the moment we crossed into the kitchen. Unable to bear the heat of his stare, I turned my attention to my aunt as she giggled with Trey and happily situated a plate for him. Through my peripheral I could see Chris rising abruptly from his seat. My hands became clammy and my heart started to race as he sauntered toward me. Guilt suddenly set in as he silently walked past me, so close that his shoulder brushed against my own.
“Hey, where do you want me to sit?” Trey asked, breaking me from my shameful daze. “Oh, um… you can sit in here.” He trailed along behind me as I made my way to the table, nearly sitting him in a secluded corner. The following minutes felt like hours and I could feel sporadic glances from Destani across the table. I was entirely too afraid to look at her… I knew she was confused by Trey’s presence in the house and I couldn’t bear to see even a slither of disappointment on her face. I soon turned my attention to the entrance of the kitchen when I heard the sound of approaching footsteps. Chris rounded the corner fully dressed in a black skully, his jacket, and his boots with his keys dangling from his right hand.
Not bothering to turn his attention to Trey or I, he bee lined straight for his mom and cleared his throat “Aye ma, I’m about to head out.” “Why you leaving so soon baby?” She asked, rising from her seat. “I have to go take care of some things… I may come back later or something.” “Well alright baby. You sure you don’t wanna stay a little longer?” She urged, concern masking her tone. “Nah, I have to go.” The fact that he was so persistent prompted Ms. Joyce to zip her lips and give up her argument. She took a hold of his arm and together they headed out of the kitchen and to the front door.
Feeling the strongest urge to take a moment to myself, I excused myself from the table and quickly made my way upstairs to my room to retrieve Trey’s gift. I stepped into the room and flipped the light switch on, making my way to my closet to grab the gift. On my way out, a light blue object in the center of my bed caught my attention and I stopped in my tracks to further investigate. Easing down onto the edge of the bed, I squinted at the scripture on the side of the bag and gasped as I made out the words Tiffany & Co... Completely confused by the sudden presence of the bag, I reached for the tag dangling from the side...

Drag Race: ‘She Done Already Done Brought It On’ Review
I was going to review every episode of Drag Race Season 9 and then decided that last week was pointless because no-one got eliminated. On the one hand, I appreciate having a week more to get to know the queens before anyone goes home, on the other the decision that would have been made last week was pretty much just carried over. I wasn’t gagged by Gaga either like gurl you were meant to be judging not boasting about how many designers have made dresses for you, smh.
Can we all just take a moment before I go any further to ask what in the ever loving hell was that appearance by Lisa Kudrow? I thought she was going to be a judge or at the very least a mentor, not just casually come by for thirty seconds, drop some catch phrases and go. Like what was the point? Am I missing something there?
For me this challenge wasn’t particularly inspiring; I’m English and cheerleading isn’t really a thing here so it was a bit lost on me whether they were good or not. It did seem like the kind of challenge which could be edited to make anyone seem top or bottom, I really thought Alexis was going to be bottom instead of Charlie because I thought she did a good job and had one of my favourite runways.
The runway theme of White Party was good and inspired some amazing looks from the queens mostly because it was so simple - apart from Kimora who was serving some kind of season three-esque eight looks in one outfit and none of them on theme. I’m big on themes so I can’t cope when someone doesn’t stick to one -especially one so easy! I couldn’t pick a favourite runway between Charlie and Valentina who are both quickly becoming my favourites of the season. I hope Charlie does better than the 7th or 8th place I’m sadly expecting her to come in but she’s not being set up as much more than a middle of the pack queen. I really hopes she makes Snatch Game because her impressions on YouTube are to die for, especially Lana Del Ray.
I also wasn’t that impressed with Cynthia/ Cucu returning who speaks almost entirely in hashtags I’m not going to use and whose Cucu shtick continues to annoy me rather than entertain. I know she left early last season but she won Miss Congeniality and I feel like that kind of completed her story. She didn’t seem like the unfinished business kind of queen that it makes sense to have return (like Shangela). This was a good group without her and I kind of hope she goes out early so she doesn’t take the spot of a more deserving queen.
Valentina was a great winner for the week, her outfit was good and the fact she actually drew my attention through the challenge while everyone else went a bit over my head was definitely a good sign. I love when the girl who gets picked last shows everyone else up - not to mention she’s only been doing drag for ten months! Her style is so refined, she puts some queens to shame for their lack of polish. I hope she doesn’t fall victim to the curse of the Latina queens and get sent home for a poor snatch game. I haven’t decided who I’m rooting for to win quite yet, I think I need another week, but she’s a very strong contender.
It felt like they tried to edit the lip-sync to look exciting this week even though it wasn’t - I’m pretty sure if that had happened on a week that wasn’t the first elimination they both would have been gone. I was rooting for Kimora at the beginning of the season because I liked her look a lot but she’s fallen rapidly in my estimation and I actually think she was slightly worse at the lip-sync and definitely had the worst runway so she probably should have gone. It’s sad that Jaymes was set up as the first gone, she seemed like a really good person and she obviosuly genuinely cared about her craft and seeing her improve and grow in confidence week by week would have been interesting whereas Kimora seems to care about her ass and not much else and is likely going to go within the next couple of weeks anyway because the judges don’t seem to be on her wavelength at all. I know she does care about drag but she has the attitude I hate of ‘too good to listen to the judges’ which is going to get her kicked off. I hope Jaymes does really well in her post-drag race career, even my icy heart got all emotional with her being unsure of herself on Untucked. Maybe she’ll get to come back next season when she’s worked on live audience performing and her confidence? I’d really like to see her succeed.

Auction
Omega Beta Zeta’s charity auction was one of the biggest annual fundraisers by a Barden student group. Stacie had heard about the auction from the older girls, but she hadn’t expect the turnout to be this large. Fidgeting nervously, she peeked from behind the curtain as the bids for the girl before her went up to a hundred dollars. She hoped she could bring in just as much, not that she doubted her appeal, but being a freshman meant she went after all of the older girls were bid on, emptying people’s pockets before they could even see her.
Stacie wasn’t thrilled when she found out about the fact that they were auctioning themselves, but the girls were quick to assure her that it wasn’t as bad as it sounded. Only Barden students could bid on her, and they couldn’t ask her to do anything illegal, ask her to wear anything specific, or touch her. Most of the bidders were boys from Barden’s fraternities and they knew that, if either of them got out of line they would be severely punished, not to mention risk losing their charter. So guys mostly asked for the girls to do their chores or help them study for a class.
The auctioneer, their chapter president, closed the bidding for the girl at one hundred and eighty dollars, leading her off the stage and starting Stacie’s introduction. After letting out a nervous breath, Stacie smiled broadly and stepped onto the stage, waving at the audience which she, thankfully, couldn’t see well because of the spotlights on her.
She relaxed a little when the bidding started way over the twenty dollars the auctioneer suggested, quickly escalating and reaching three hundred dollars when two particularly stubborn frat boys started trying to outbid each other, and ending when one of them shouted his final five hundred dollar bid. Stacie chuckled when the guy whooped loudly, pumping his fists as his frat brothers lifted him up. Blowing a kiss at him, Stacie walked off the stage where a group of her sorority sisters surrounded her immediately to congratulate her.
The excitement over the successful auction passed quickly, and Stacie started dreading the day the guy, Howie apparently, was set to pick her up. Stacie fretted over what to wear, not wanting to wear something too revealing so he didn’t get the wrong idea, but looking good enough so that he wouldn’t feel like he overpaid. She finally decided on yoga pants and a t-shirt, in case whatever he asked her to do required something more comfortable than jeans, but didn’t show off her assets too much.
When the day finally came Stacie was ready to bolt. She was thinking of excuses she could use to get out of it, but her hope that frat boys weren’t punctual were dashed when the doorbell rang right on time and one of the other girls called her to the door. She threw on a hoodie as an afterthought, feeling more comfortable with the extra layer even though it wasn’t particularly cold out.
Stacie jogged down the stairs, taking a breath before opening the door and freezing when she found a girl on the other side. “Hi.” The girl at the door was a really hot blonde, gorgeous eyes, and looked a little bit confused. “I’m Stacie and… you’re not that frat guy.”
“No, I won a bet and I got whatever he got at this auction.” The girl frowned and handed her the ticket they gave all the auction winners. “What did he buy exactly?”
“Me!” Stacie grinned broadly, feeling like she’d won the lottery. Not only did she not have to hang out with a sleazy frat guy, but she got to hang out with a really hot girl who clearly had no idea what she was getting into. She took off her hoodie since she didn’t need it anymore, throwing it over her shoulder and stepping outside, closing the door and leading the girl down the porch steps. “For whatever you want. As long as it’s legal.”
“What?”
The girl stopped, forcing Stacie to turn. She quirked an eyebrow and shrugged. “I guess if you can assure me we won’t get caught…” She suspected she’d be willing to do a lot for this girl if she asked.
“No, that’s-” She shook her head and Stacie found her incredibly adorable in her confusion. “What do you mean he bought you?”
“He didn’t buy me.” Stacie knew how that sounded and rolled her eyes at the whole situation. “It’s more like a rental. We usually just help them with their homework or chores.”
The girl arched an eyebrow. “So you do this a lot?”
“You’d be surprised how much frat boys are willing to pay to have a cute girl wash their car. And all the money goes to charity.” Stacie shrugged, lifting herself onto her toes and smiled. “So, I’m all yours.”
“Starting now?” Stacie nodded. “Okay… I’m Aubrey.” Aubrey shook her hand and gave her a small smile, Stacie’s heart fluttering happily. She was suddenly really glad she’d participated in the auction. “Let’s go.”
Aubrey turned and Stacie walked after her, skipping for a few steps to catch up. “Where are we going?”
“Rehearsal, then home.”
“Rehearsal?”
Aubrey looked at her over her shoulder and nodded. “I the captain of the Bellas.”
Stacie had heard about the Bellas from the other girls, but she didn’t know much about them. “Oh right, that singing group.”
Aubrey scrunched up her nose and Stacie could tell she was stopping herself from saying something. Instead, Aubrey kept walking to the other side of campus.
“How much cardio do you do?”
“Cardio?” Maybe she wasn’t so excited about this anymore.
“I assume you exercise. I mean, with your… You look…” Aubrey blushed and walked a little bit faster, making Stacie smirk, at least now she knew she’d had an effect on her too which meant she wasn’t totally straight. “I just thought you could help with cardio while I go over the routine with Chloe.”
“Sure.” Stacie jogged for a few seconds to catch up, not really happy with whatever helping with cardio meant, but more importantly... “Who’s Chloe?”
“My co-captain.” Aubrey stopped when they got a door to a building Stacie had never been in, her hand stopping short of the doorknob before turning back to face her. “The girls can be a bit much sometimes, just don’t let them know you’re nervous.”
If Aubrey thought that made her less nervous, she was wrong but, before she could ask anything, Aubrey opened the door and led her into a large space where a group of girls were already waiting.
“Everyone, this is Stacie. She’s gonna be helping us today.”
Stacie waved awkwardly at the girls looking at her scrutinizingly.
A loud girl with an accent was the first one to talk. “Are you dating her?”
“No!”
“Why not?” Fat Amy asked.
Cynthia Rose nodded. “She’s hot.”
Aubrey sighed. “We’re not dating, we just met.”
Stacie smirked, satisfied by the fact that Aubrey dating a girl wasn’t a wild idea to her friends, and that her reason for not dating her was that they just met, meaning she had a chance.
The girls looked at each other confused. “Did you buy her?”
“No!”
“Sort of.” Stacie answered at the same time, endlessly amused by this conversation and Aubrey’s blatant uncomfortableness.
Aubrey rolled her eyes. “I won her on a bet.”
“Is that legal?” Beca shook her head confused.
Aubrey pinched the bridge of her nose and Stacie chuckled, stepping forward, figuring she could earn some brownie points if she explained. “I auctioned myself for charity, the guy who bid for me lost a bet to Aubrey so now I’m here.”
“Nice, is she for everyone?”
“She’s not.” Aubrey stepped between Stacie and the rest of the girls and Stacie felt strangely pleased by Aubrey’s possessiveness. “She’s just gonna help with rehearsal and with some stuff at the house. Now, we’ve wasted enough time so if that’s all…” She turned to Stacie and talked under her breath. “Just go up and down around the bleachers for a while. Don’t let them slack off.” She turned back to face the Bellas and clapped. “Alright, follow Stacie around the bleachers while Chloe and I go over the routine for regionals.”
Stacie couldn’t stop thinking about Aubrey all week. Yes, she might have suffered a bit running up and down those bleachers, and weeding her back yard hadn’t been the most entertaining thing she could’ve come up with, but Aubrey being there the whole time made it bearable. Aside from being super hot, Aubrey was smart and funny and Stacie really wanted to see her again, but she didn’t know how Aubrey would feel about that.
Stacie wasn’t one to be insecure, usually, but she needed more time with Aubrey before she made her move; and since Aubrey hadn’t known what the original terms of the auction were, she decided to pretend like she was still supposed to help her with things, hoping she wouldn’t get too suspicious.
Aubrey had mentioned she liked the coffee shop by the Bella house so Stacie stopped by before going over. The guy at the register knew who Aubrey was right away, giving her usual to Stacie who then made her way to the house, smiling broadly when Aubrey opened the door. “Reporting for duty?”
Aubrey looked surprised to find her there, but she grabbed the coffee Stacie held out and led her outside.
Aubrey hummed, looking at the front of the house for a while and finally pointed at the front. “I guess the windows need washing, I’ll go get a bucket and sponges.”
Stacie watched her walk away with a smile, happy at how easy Aubrey had accepted her presence there and hoping it meant that Aubrey would be open to going out with her, she just needed to find the right time to ask her, or find more reasons to spend time with her.
“Your shutters could use a new coat of paint.” Stacie commented as she wiped down the pane next to Aubrey’s.
Aubrey glanced at the shutters and nodded. “I guess.” She grabbed her sponge and dunked it in the bucket. “I don’t think we have paint.”
“I’m pretty sure there are places where they sell it.”
“Smartass.”
Aubrey lifted her sponge and waved it at Stacie making her gasp when the cold water hit her.
“You do not want to do that,” Stacie said threateningly.
“I’m so scared.” Aubrey waved her sponge again, squeezing it to get more water out.
Stacie narrowed her eyes, throwing her sponge at Aubrey’s chest, landing with a wet splat before falling to the ground.
Aubrey’s mouth opened in shock, frozen for a few seconds before she grabbed the bucket and lifted it, trying to pour the water on Stacie. Stacie grabbed her arms, keeping her from tipping it over, the water sloshing back and forth and getting them both wet, until Aubrey managed to turn it over, but Stacie was keeping her close and a lot of it landed on her too.
Aubrey let go of the bucket and jumped back, shaking off some of the water while Stacie laughed, pushing her now soaking wet hair away from her face. She looked up at Aubrey, panting. She could feel her shirt sticking to her chest and stomach and noticed Aubrey looking at it.
Aubrey took a step closer. “We should change.”
Stacie felt a shiver run down her spine at the look in Aubrey’s eyes and ran the tips of her fingers down Aubrey’s forearm, tugging her closer by the wrist and nodding.
“Bree, we need to leave for rehearsal now.” Chloe yelled from the front of the house
Aubrey jumped back and looked over Stacie’s shoulder. “I’ll be right there.”
Stacie didn’t really get how she got herself in this situation. Yes, Aubrey was amazing and hot, but Stacie had never gone to these lengths to get someone to go out with her. She usually didn’t have to do anything, she just showed up and people lined up. And now here she was, on her third weekend of doing chores at the Bella house, on top of a ladder cleaning the gutters with only an almost kiss to show for it.
The weather had helped today, allowing her to wear her shortest pair of shorts she could find in her closet and a shirt so tight it wouldn’t stick to her more if it was wet. Aubrey had been practically drooling ever since she’d shown up. She just wished there was less actual work involved and more spending time with Aubrey.
There was a particularly annoying cluster of leaves stuck on one side. Stacie tried freeing it but it wasn’t coming out. She pulled harder, cursing when it stubbornly refused to move.
She heard Aubrey chuckle “Wanna take a break?”
Stacie turned to look at her, wiping her brow with the back of her forearm and leaning with her other arm on the gutter. “I wanted to finish this early so we had time to go buy the paint for the shutters?”
“You want to do that today?”
Stacie shrugged. “We can go tomorrow if you don’t have plans.”
Aubrey tilted her head. “You don’t have plans?”
“I told you, I’m all yours.” She smiled warmly, squinting down at Aubrey and wrinkling her nose.
“Well, do you want some water? It’s pretty hot out here, you look…” She stopped, biting her lip and looking down at her feet blushing.
Stacie smiled, deciding to get off the ladder and turning to look at Aubrey with a seductive smile. “I look hot?”
Aubrey shook her head noncommittally. “You look like you could use some cold water.”
Stacie leaned down, resting her hands on the armrests of Aubrey’s lawnchair. “I am feeling a bit heated.” She licked her lips and leaned closer. “Aubrey, did you know that the deal from the auction was just for one weekend?”
Aubrey frowned confused. “Then why did you come back twice?”
“I really like cleaning gutters.” Stacie deadpanned, chuckling when Aubrey’s frown deepened. “And I wanted an excuse to hang out with you.”
Aubrey grinned, lifting her hand to trace the edge of the collar of Stacie’s t-shirt. “You could ask me out.”
“I could.” Stacie nodded, her skin tingling from Aubrey’s touch. “But then your shutters will never get painted.”
“You could still do it.”
Stacie leaned closer, her nose bumping against Aubrey’s. “I wouldn’t do it for free.”
Aubrey tilted up her chin, her lips almost brushing Stacie’s. “I’m sure we can work something out.”
Leaning down, Stacie pressed her lips against Aubrey’s softly. Aubrey straightened up, covering one of Stacie’s hands on the chair and cupping Stacie’s cheek with her free hand, sighing against Stacie’s lips and deepening the kiss.
Stacie pulled back smiling. “I might need a little more convincing.”

TIFF 2019: Let the Oscar Buzz Begin
Last year’s Best Picture Oscar winner was a divisive one. Green Book was largely panned by critics and plagued with problems ranging from a racist screenwriter to the fact that the family of its subject wasn’t consulted in the making of the film. But its running in the Oscar race was all but secured when it won the coveted Grolsch People’s Choice Award at TIFF. Historically, the award has been a pretty good indicator of which film will go on to nab the biggest award of the year (past Grolsch winners include 12 Years a Slave, The King’s Speech and Slumdog Millionaire, which won big at the Oscars just a few months later.)
This year’s winner, Jojo Rabbit, has been similarly divisive but if history’s taught us anything, it’s not to write off a Grolsch winner. As the final film festival on the circuit before awards season kicks off–following Telluride, Venice and Cannes—TIFF is where awards chatter gets cemented and speculation heats up. Read on for a roundup of the films whose buzz we expect to carry them right through to February, when awards season comes to a close with the Oscars.
Jojo Rabbit It’s not often that a Hitler film is described as “whimsical” but the word comes up time and again in reviews of the satirical film, which may have divided critics but earned a standing ovation from audiences. “Everyone in Toronto can agree that, on paper, Jojo Rabbit shouldn’t work. What they have trouble agreeing on is everything else,” notes a Vulture review. The film, about a Nazi-loving young boy whose worldview is shaken when he begins to fall for a Jewish girl his mother is hiding in their attic, currently has a Metacritic score of 52% but as IndieWire reminds us, plenty of films have seen awards season love despite middling reviews from critics, most recently Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book. I expect to see a nom for the film in the Best Picture category and Kiwi director Taika Waititi might just score one too.

Marriage Story This Netflix film about a couple navigating divorce was the runner-up for the Grolsch award and my personal favourite from the festival this year. There’s no obvious villain, no picking of sides, no one injured party—the grievances are messy, complicated and equally valid on both sides. As the couple whose marriage is ending, Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson both deliver tour de force performances, and Laura Dern swoops in with a memorable turn as Johansson’s shrewd lawyer. Expect nods for all of them, as well as for the film’s director and writer Noah Baumbach.

Parasite All anyone could talk about at Cannes in May was acclaimed Korean director Bong Joon-Ho’s film Parasite, which went on to win the festival’s highest honour, the Palme d’Or. It received similar critical acclaim at TIFF and came in third for the People’s Choice Award. The film follows a family of con artists who overtake an affluent household, and weaves together themes of class and capitalism into a captivating thriller. If it gets the recognition it seems poised to receive, it’ll make history as the first Oscar-nominated film from South Korea.

Joker Joker’s already been making headlines for its “dangerous” and “scary” messaging and critics have been divided on its actual merits, but they do all seem to agree that an Oscar nom is on the cards for Joaquin Phoenix. The film also won the Golden Lion at Venice, so it might have some Best Picture chances as well.

Hustlers The wild card entry here is definitely Jennifer Lopez, whose excellent performance as a stripper turned con artist in this film based on a true story got rave reviews at TIFF. Whether the film will sit well with Oscar voters, who tend to be a conservative, older bunch, is yet to be seen, but the buzz attached to her name is undeniable. Writer-director Lorene Scafaria also deserves recognition for distilling a complicated, layered story into a tight, well-crafted narrative with both heart and hustle.

Harriet In the first and only biopic ever made on American abolitionist Harriet Tubman, Tony Award-winning actress Cynthia Erivo (whom audiences may remember from her supporting role in Widows last year) delivers a powerful performance as the titular character who risks her life to get slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad. Both she and Janelle Monae, who plays a free Black woman providing shelter and support to slaves fleeing the south, could be in the running for nominations in the Lead and Supporting categories respectively.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood There’s not much Mr Rogers in this Mr Rogers film, which mostly belongs to Matthew Rhys, who plays the Esquire journalist whose article the film is based on. A Supporting Actor nod for Tom Hanks—who is truly the Mr Rogers of our time—is a sure bet, and Matthew Rhys might sneak in with a nod too. Marielle Heller (who was overlooked last year for her excellent Can You Ever Forgive Me?) might well score a nomination for her deft, measured direction as well.

Ford v Ferrari Two of the best actors of our time, Matt Damon and Christian Bale, co-star in this film about an automotive designer (Damon) and racecar driver (Bale) who try to build a Ford Mustang ahead of the 1966 Le Mans race in France. According to Macleans, “it has all the hallmarks of an Oscar Best Picture nominee—a story powered by high-octane chase scenes, a culture war pitting white-bread America against snotty Europeans, and a pair of blue-chip stars.”

Judy For her portrayal of Hollywood icon Judy Garland in the final months of her life, Renee Zellweger got a three-minute standing ovation and a whole lot of Oscar buzz at the festival. Variety writer Jenelle Riley tweeted, “In 15 years at #TIFF I have never seen a standing ovation like the one for Renee Zellweger at JUDY.” Entertainment Weekly‘s Joey Nolfi also commented on the audience reaction, writing, “Renee Zellweger is crying. I’m crying. Everyone is fucking crying and Judy is a soaring, emotional wallop of a comeback for its star.” So it’s safe to say that come February, the actress will be sitting at the Dolby Theatre with a fourth Oscar nomination to her name.

Just Mercy As a prisoner on Death Row for a murder he didn’t commit, Jamie Foxx is both cynical and hopeful, and his moving performance may earn him his second Oscar (he won in 2005 for Ray). Brie Larson could earn a Supporting nod too, and Michael B Jordan—as the activist and lawyer who makes it his mission to work with disenfranchised communities in the prison system—might finally score his first Oscar nom.

The Two Popes The Hollywood Reporter has deemed it “a triumph of writing as well as unostentatious filmmaking.” Starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, the Netflix film imagines a series of meetings between Pope Francis and Pope Benedict at the height of a scandal in the Catholic church. Critics seem to have loved its witty, humorous energy and the bromance at its centre, so nominations for the two veteran actors are likely on the table.
