Once upon a time, I wanted to say Ashkenazim are from Christian countries and Sefaradim are from Muslim ones. This only works, though, as long as you don't make the reverse generalization: that all Jews from Christian countries are Ashkenazi and all Jews from Muslim countries are Sefaradi. Because Ethiopian Jews aren't Ashkenazi, and neither are Italki and Romaniote ones. And some people don't realize that Spain banished its Jews right when it became entirely Christian, and Sefaradi Jews lived in Christian Spain for centuries. And even if you call Iraqi, Parsi and Moroccan Jews Sefaradi, you can't call Yemenites that. So yeah, the categories are kind of complex.
“European diaspora” diaspora from WHERE, Jan. Diaspora from where.
