@girl-ghostly I couldn't find a only Harry Potter fanfic so instead I'm posting this Percy Jackson-Harry Potter crossover. If I find and post anymore Harry Potter fanfics I'll make sure to tag you in them.
In this fanfic the seven plus Lou Ellen are sent by a prophecy to Hogwarts. Also in this universe pretty much all of the Harry Potter characters that died are alive and Harry, Ron, and Hermione have returned for their 7th year.
Chapter One
Annabeth's POV
Percy and I were playing 2 v 2 volleyball against Rachel and Lou Ellen, when suddenly Rachel fell into her all too familiar trance.
"Lou," Percy said. "Go get Chiron."
She nodded and ran off. Lou got back with Chiron, just as Rachel began to speak.
"The seven half-bloods will once again unite, this time one more shall join their rank.
A world of magic they will explore, making friends or enemies will be frank.
An enemy risen from the grave, seeks to destory.
Teaming up is the only hope or else there will be no joy."
The green mist around Rachel disappeared and she started to fall, but Percy and I caught her.
"This calls for a meeting," Chiron says.
"Percy and I will go grab the other councilors and meet you in the rec room," I say.
"Very well," Chiron replies. And after making sure Rachel is okay, Percy and I start the rounds.
About 20 minutes later, Percy and I enter the rec room. We take seats next to each other around the ping pong table. And as for it seems the first time the table isn't pure chaos, the only is the Stolls seeing how much Cheez Whiz they could put in Clovis' mouth before he wakes up.
"So, what's the prophecy this time?" Clarisse asks.
"Annabeth will you please recite it?" Chiron asks me.
"Sure," I say standing up. "The seven half-bloods will once again unite, this time one more will join their rank. A world of magic they will explore, making friends or enemies will be rank. An enemy risen from the grave, seeks to destory. Teaming up is the only hope, or else there will be no joy." I recite then I sit back down.
"Well, obviously the 7 are Percy, Annabeth, Leo, Frank, Hazel, Piper, and Jason." Miranda says.
"Then who is the other going to be?" Piper and Jason ask at the same time.
"I'll go," Lou Ellen says. Everyone turns to look at her. "What she asks? It mentions magic, and that's right up my alley."
"Well," Chiron says. "I'll go make a few Iris Messages and those involved meet back here tomorrow morning." We nod.
That night the nightmares came tonight's were some of the worst, because they included Percy dying. I awoke from the nightmares to Percy in my cabin, with his arms wrapped around me and comforting me with his words. We stayed cuddled up like that for the rest of the night. The next morning, I awoke to find Percy already awake and holding a scroll of paper.
"What is that?" I ask him. He looks over at me.
"No idea it was here when I woke up." I grab it from him and I open it to find it's written in ancient greek.
"It's from Hecate," I say.
"We better go meet up with the others, we can read it on the way." Percy says. I nod. Percy heads back to his cabin to change as, I change myself. I grab my bag which I had packed the night before, and I meet up with Percy as we make our way to the Big House.
"Annabeth," Chiron says to me.
"Yeah?" I respond.
"Hecate said she sent a letter to you, will you read it aloud to us?" He asks.
"Sure," I reply as I pull it out and I start to read.
Chapter 2
Percy's POV
"Dear demigods, I've been informed that you are going on a quest that involves witches and wizards. You see long ago I gave magic to a few mortals, those were the first wizards and witches, since then their population has grown immensely, and they have wizarding schools all over the globe, for this specific quest you are heading to Hogwarts in Scotland. These witches and wizards have recently ended a war of their own. It was against an evil wizard who was known as Lord
Voldemort and his followers which were known as Deatheaters. At Hogwarts, the students are split into houses, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin, the students are sorted into each house by their personality. Gryffindors are brave, Ravenclaws are smart, Slytherins are ambitious, and Hufflepuffs are basically everyone who don't fit into the other categories. At the school only the headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, has been informed of your parentage. A muggle is a person without magic. There are also 3 types of wizards, pure bloods, half bloods, and muggle borns, if you are asked reply with half blood. Your cover story is that you are transfer students from America that are spending their final year at Hogwarts. I have granted each of you with magic that can be used through a wand. Once you get to England go to the Leaky Cauldron on Charing Cross Road in London. Once, inside ask the bar tender for help to get into Diagon Alley, and he will help you. Once, you will need to go to Gringotts Bank which is run by goblins show attached note and they will take you to your vaults which have been supplied with wizarding money once that you all will need the supplies listed at the bottom of the paper. Good luck, Hecate."
"Wow," I say.
"How are we getting there, and what about Hazel and Frank?" Piper asks.
"We have arranged magic transporting to Charing Cross and the others will meet you there." Chiron replies. "Now if you will all stand here." Chiron says motion to right in front of him. Leo kisses Calypso good bye as he moves to in front of Chiron and the rest of us join him. "Ready." Chiron says. And Lou Ellen, Leo, Piper, Jason, Annabeth, and I vanish.
Chapter 3
Leo's POV
We appeared on a cement side walk outside of an old bookshop. I looked to my left to see that like Chiron has said Hazel and Frank were now with us.
"Hey, Frank. Hi, Hazel." I say.
"Good to see all of you again," Hazel says to the group.
"We can talk later," Annabeth says. "Can we just focus on finding the Leaky Cauldron?"
"It's over there," Percy says pointing a few shops down. We make our way there and we make our way in. The pub is dimly lit and full of people in robes and hats. We walk up to the bartender.
"Can you help us get into Diagon Alley?" Piper asks him.
"You must be the transfers from America, I was told about, follow me." He replies. He leads us out into a small courtyard and taps a brick with his wand, the bricks move around to reveal a door way.
"There you go," He says.
" Thanks," Jason says.
" By the way my name is Tom," the bartender says.
"Thanks, Tom," Annabeth says and we walk through the archway into Diagon Alley.
Chapter 4
Annabeth's POV
We walked down through Diagon Alley to a large white building at the end. As we entered Gringotts I couldn't help but notice all the vaulted ceilings, and doorways it was really cool and it made me really want to start sketching. We walked up to a goblin at the end of the hallway.
"Indenfication?" He asks. And I hand him the note Hecate gave me.
"Very well, follow me," the goblin says. He holds the note out to me and I take it back then he leads us down a hallway to a railway. He calls another cart and we climb into them. Piper, Jason, Hazel, and Frank in the one in the front and Percy, Leo, Lou Ellen, and I in the cart in the back. We arrive at vault number 213. We climb out of the carts. The door of the vault has 8 locks on it.
"According to the note each lock will open when we say something we have given up for someone we love.
"I'll go first," Percy says. "I gave up becoming a god for Annabeth."
"I gave up learning magic from CC for Percy." I say.
"I gave up being praetor, so that we could close the doors," Jason says looking around at all of us.
"I gave up my safety to save my dad," Piper replies.
"My life to stop her from awakening back in 1942," Hazel says.
"Being a good daughter, I gave it up so, I could train and so I could protect camp," Lou Ellen says. The locks on the door had clicked open as each person said their thing. The vault door opened to reveal gold, silver, and bronze coins.
"Protection, I gave it up to give protection to others," Frank says.
"The Argo 2," Leo says.
"The gold ones are galleons, the silver sickles and the bronze knuts, and remember there are 29 knuts in a sickle and 27 sickles in a galleon," the goblin told us. After, we each collected a reasonable amount of money we, climbed back in the carts and we left the bank.
Chapter 5
Percy's POV
We got out of the bank and we got our supplies. After, collecting the main things we head to Ollivanders for wands. "Hello," an old man says as we enter.
"You must be Ollivander," Lou Ellen says.
"That's me," He replies. "Getting new wands?" He asks us.
"Yep," Annabeth says quickly.
"Many others have too," he said. "Now who's first?"
"I guess I'll go," Hazel replies stepping forward.
"Let's see, try this one, hazel wood, 10 1/2 inches, unicorn tail, slightly flexible," he says handing it to her she waves it around and sparks come out of the tip. "It's a match," Ollivander replies.
Next is Annabeth whose wand is elm wood with a unicorn hair, 13 3/4 inches and unyielding flexibility. Then it's Jason, whose wand turns out to be vine with dragon heartstring, 12 inches and slightly springy. Lou Ellen's is blackthorn with a unicorn hair core, 11 1/2 inches and reasonably springy. Piper's wand is apple wood, with a phoenix feather core, 9 1/2 inches and inflexible. Frank's is larch wood with unicorn hair 14 inches, and slightly bendy. And Leo's is pine wood with phoenix feather core, and is springy. Finally, it was my turn. Ollivander gave me a few wands but after a while, one finally chose me. It's red oak with a phoenix feather, 12 1/4 inches and is slightly bendy.
After, getting our wands we head back to the Leaky Cauldron to book rooms for the night, before we leave for the train in the morning. We book 4 rooms, Jason and I in one, Piper and Annabeth in another, than Frank and Leo sharing one, and Hazel and Lou Ellen sharing the fourth. After, booking rooms it's only around 5.
"How about we explore a bit more," Piper suggests.
"Okay," Annabeth says. "But stay with a buddy, and we'll meet back here in an hour for dinner." And everyone agrees. Annabeth then grabs my hand and we back to the courtyard. I pull out my wand and I tap the same brick that the bartender had and the doorway to Diagon Alley opens. As, our group walks down the alley the group gets smaller first Leo, Piper, and Jason, head off to an ice cream parlor, and Frank, Hazel, and Lou leave to look at a second hand store. So, then it's just me and Annabeth.
"Okay, Wise Girl, how about that really bright, eye catching one over there," I say pointing.
"So, what shop should we go to first?" I ask her.
"I don't know, you chose," Annabeth replies.
"Okay," she says. We walk over to it. "Weasely Wizard Wheezes, Joke Shop," Annabeth reads aloud. "Really, a joke shop?"
"How about we just go check it out," I respond.
"Whatever you want, Seaweed Brain," she replies leaning over and pecking my lips. Then together we walk into the store.
Chapter 6
Annabeth's POV
Weasley Wizard Wheezes is a store the Stolls would be proud of. The inside was crowded and very brightly colored.
So apparently I never even finished chapter six and I think it was because of my ADHD and that by the time I was writing chapter 6 my hyperfixation was gone.

Alright I’m going to talk about TAZ: Graduation
It’s not going to be pleasant so I’ll put it under the cut. I just have to vent, and this seems as good a place as any to do it.
I just finished Episode 4, the newest episode as of this writing, and I’m utterly, thoroughly, unbearably bored. With every episode so far, I’ve been excited to see what new adventure the Grad Gang will get into this week, and every time, the answer has been “they don’t”. Instead of the boys gallivanting about, having fun escapades across a world lovingly created by their dear brother, The Adventure Zone: Graduation is shaping up to be a long, tedious slog of half-baked characters, scenes that go on far too long, and absolutely no narrative arc whatsoever.
Travis’s pacing as DM is glacial. I was willing to forgive the first episode, since it was the first one and of course he had to introduce a lot of information to both the players and the audience. However, the episodes and scenes since then have been slow-paced at best, and borderline-anchored at worst. Have there been good goofs? Yes, absolutely. These are still the McElroys we’re talking about; I think they’d have to actively try not to be funny to actually not be funny. And Travis has had his fair share of good bits! But a lot of the time, if there is a memorable scene or specific moment from Graduation, it’s the players who are the ones making it better, and Travis just provides the backboard for them to bounce off of. Master Firbolg taking an accounting class and not understanding it in the slightest (”WHAT IS SYLLABUS?!” “I am...dunce.”); Sir Fitzroy Maplecourt getting scammed by the “Realm of Goodcastle”; Argo Keene’s surprisingly heart-tugging backstory and ongoing fascination with limes! These are all great bits!
But nothing is happening on the story side of things. There’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it indication that the woods are more important than they seem at the end of episode 1, and now, in episode 4, the group finally has a D&D-esque goal: track down a monster. Though even still, they’re tracking down a monster to give it a subpoena. On the one hand, that’s goofy McElroy antics. On the other, it’s an indicator of just how annoyingly rooted in accounting and other boring mechanics this world is.
In the trailer for the season, a joke was made about how the school treats Accounting as its most important class, but then Travis turned around and said “no, actually, it really is the most important class, and everything in this world revolves around accounting, including major game mechanics”. The joke became reality, and you can hear in the episodes as the players (Justin especially, even out of character) strain to deal with these boring mechanics. Again, there are only 4 episodes released at this point, so maybe in the future I can look back and say “wow, remember when I thought the accounting rules were boring?”, but as it stands right now, it seems to exist mostly as a limiting factor on a) how much money the boys get, and b) how much property damage they’re going to be allowed to get away with.
In general, the idea of this arc seems to be “watch as these characters have a fun time doing stuff!” But in practice, the arc has become “watch as these characters hang around in places with no real direction until given a forceful shove by the DM!” Without an overarching narrative throughline (e.g. Find the Grand Relics; Defeat the Abominations; hell, let’s bring back Travis’s last stint as DM with Find out who killed Jeremiah Blackwell) the characters end up wandering around from scene to scene, told where they’re going by the DM and occasionally given choices on which of two paths they want to take to the same destination. I mean that last part literally. In the fourth episode, Travis shows the boys two shops and asks which one they want to go into, only to reveal that both doors lead to the same place. (Side note: Travis, you don’t get to dunk on Griffin for naming his store “Fantasy Costco” when a) Fantasy Whatever is a big part of the Adventure Zone brand, and b) you just took the E out of Barnes and Noble, said it was a pun, and called it a day.)
And let’s talk about the NPCs. I was a little worried when Travis said he had created something like 50 NPCs as proper characters (e.g. with sheets and everything), because there was no way that I or anyone else was going to remember that many characters. And there are a lot. The only one whose name I can remember off the top of my head is Rainier, and that’s because she’s the one the cast interacts with the most. Everybody else? No idea. Now, having a lot of NPCs isn’t necessarily a negative thing, but they either all have to stand out in some way, or it has to be accepted that not all of these characters are going to be important. And yet it feels like with every new character introduced, we’re expected to try to remember who they are.
I’d like to end this off by saying that I don’t think Graduation should be written off as “bad”. It’s not “bad”. But as it stands right now, I can’t really call it “good” either. Four episodes into Balance, we’d met Killian, and Magic Brian, and heard “ABRACA-FUCK-YOU!” for the first time. Four episodes into Amnesty, the crew was all together, had already had one encounter with the Beast, and was gearing up to take it on again with a proper plan. Hell, four episodes into Dust and Commitment, the story was ending! The one thing I want from this series at the moment, above all else, is for there to be an ongoing narrative to bring me back every week. As the series currently stands, we’ve got nothing. No antagonists looming over the hill. No overarching goal the protagonists will have to accomplish at some point, but are taking a temporary break from. They’re going to deliver subpoena to a Xorn, and I have no idea if that should be treated as a joke or not. Time will tell, I suppose.
People have claimed that “well Balance started out slow too, give this series time” and I have given it time. I’ve given it four episodes. As I said: Balance’s first arc was nearly over after 4 episodes. We’d had Barry Bluejeans, and Magic Brian, and learned about the Phoenix Fire Gauntlet. In Graduation, we’ve had nothing even close to any of that. If I was reading a book, and that book hadn’t introduced its plot yet after four chapters, I’d probably get bored and stop reading. I don’t see why the same can’t be said for a story-driven podcast where they supposedly play D&D.
TL;DR: I don’t want to dislike Graduation. I’ll still probably listen to every new episode when it comes out. But right now, I’m not anticipating the new episode. Travis, if you read this, I’m sorry about how harsh I’m sure I’ve come across.
I just really, really want to like this series.

3 August 2020: Remote work: reply later. Amazon: free London grocery delivery. Tech industry: regulation?
Hello, this is the Co-op Digital newsletter - it looks at what's happening in the internet/digital world and how it's relevant to the Co-op, to retail businesses, and most importantly to people, communities and society. Thank you for reading - send ideas and feedback to @rod on Twitter. Please tell a friend about it!
Remote work: reply later
Many organisations have been “working from home” for a few months now, and there are obvious advantages and disadvantages to being remote. You don’t need to spend time or money commuting, you can work the way you want, etc. On the other hand, you might be trying to care for and homeschool children while also working, which is exhausting and impossible.
One of the non-obvious disadvantages of remote work is that if you try faithfully replicate the experience of being in an office there are additional cognitive costs. Doing a Zoom meeting is slightly harder work than doing a meeting face to face because many of the social cues that help make a conversation happen are lost in the “Can you hear me/I think Marina dropped out/I didn’t catch that” dance. So after a tough day of back to back meetings on the Zoom grid, you are finished.
Here’s an article that argues that remote workers are more productive than their present-in-the-office counterparts, and that asynchronous communication is the reason. If people send messages and avoiding demanding an instant response, recipients have freedom to fit replying into all of their other work. So there are fewer interruptions (related: Basecamp - how we communicate). You can see that even if messages are happening more slowly, more work will probably get done.
But it is also obvious that making remote work work isn’t easy. Nor is it the right answer for every situation. This is the negative argument: Our remote work future is going to suck: “remote work makes you vulnerable to outsourcing, reduces your job to a metric, creates frustrating change-averse bureaucracies, and stifles your career growth”. So there’s work to do to make sure that remote work doesn’t end up like that!
Amazon: free grocery delivery in London
Amazon takes on supermarkets with free food delivery. Same or next-day delivery will now be free for Prime subscribers in London on orders above £40. Amazon says “members will get fast grocery delivery - free with their Prime membership - starting today [28 July] in London and expanding to millions of members across the UK before the end of the year”.
Last week the newsletter looked at how grocery delivery services that fully or part-subsidise delivery suffer significant margin erosion. So bundling delivery free into another service is a big move. This might be a classic “land and expand” plan. The free delivery is a loss leader to win Amazon customers who will later be loathe to switch supplier once they’ve committed. (And Amazon has the cashflow machine to outlast others.)
Another way to look at it: Amazon is just following shopper behaviour: people want convenience, and recently they’ve got used to groceries being delivered (also everyone now lives in a world where “popping to the shops” involves queues and having to wear masks and worry about getting ill, so a push of free delivery works fits with that).
Or Amazon sees it in terms of the ecosystem. Shoppers would like free delivery, so Amazon adds it to Prime, and Prime gets slightly harder to cancel, even though its annual cost keeps nudging up. This approach only works if Amazon are consistently good at working out what shoppers value. If they make a mistake, Prime starts looking like a bad deal and cancellations will grow. But if it works, Prime is the recurring membership fee that eventually looks like essential life infrastructure.
Last week: the shop inside the self-scan bleeper.
Queues and retail news
Sainsbury's tests virtual queuing system. Shoppers will be able to join the queue from a remote location, such as their car, using a smartphone app, avoiding the need to stand outside the shop. Previously on queues: Could online supermarket queues do good? and Managing queues inside and outside Co-op stores during the pandemic.
Good list of local, independent retailers in the US, many of them co-operatives.
The Book of Dreams closes: Argos is going to stop printing its massive catalogue. “Many declared childhood had been "ruined" by the news and decrying that children will never know the joys of circling potential birthday and Christmas gifts.” (The Book of Dreams has its own website, which is worth a visit.)
Tech industry: regulation?
Last week the Big Tech company leaders got hauled into the US congress’s Zoom chat to talk about whether they’re too big and whether the US gov should use anti-trust action to break them up. Here’s a summary.
Traditionally US competition law has seen monopolies in terms of price fixing - they’d ask if consumers are getting fair prices. On that basis, companies like Amazon usually don’t look anti-competitive because they generally force prices down.
However you’d think that regulation is on its way for a couple of reasons. First, market power now comes from controlling demand rather than supply. So the traditional price-fixing measure of monopoly damage may not be sufficient - and academic thinking on monopoly power is now evolving. Second, if you step back from anti-competition law specifically, regulation looks inevitable as the tech industry becomes ever larger and subsumes other industries, remaking them with software and data. It’s natural that the technology industry should face more regulation to limit its harms to consumers, other companies and wider society, its negative externalities, its unexpected consequences:
“Some time between 1850 and 1900 or so the industrial world worked out that regulating industry is necessary, and since then we’ve been arguing about how and how much, industry by industry, from industrial food to banking to airlines. Now that gets applied to tech.”
Related: I tried to live without the tech giants. it was impossible.
Uber’s algorithm and other mobility
Uber drivers to launch legal bid to uncover app's algorithm - this is interesting. if you work for an algorithm (the algorithm tasks you, and determines how much money you make) then it is deeply in your interest to understand how it works.
Also Uber: the company has cancelled plans to provide digital wallets and other financial services. They’ve committed to being profitable soon, and (thanks partly to the virus) the corporate emphasis is on Uber Eats.
Elsewhere in mobility data… the county of Devon will use data from running app Strava to prioritise popular cycling roads for repairs. And some global data on electric scooter rideshare use (nb electric scooters became legal in UK in July).

Informed consent: how GDPR has changed the way retailers engage with their customers
Just as today’s shoppers are using an ever wider variety of channels to buy through, so retailers are also using an ever wider variety of channels to get in touch and engage with shoppers. The technology is there to allow them to send messages via email and text, as well as getting in touch by post. They’re able to send notifications direct to those that have downloaded their app.
But today they are operating in an environment that’s been radically changed by GDPR regulations. That’s changed the way that retailers may now engage with shoppers. In the light of that change, some businesses are now going further to ask shoppers not only whether they’d like them to be in touch, but how they’d like that contact to be framed.
What is GDPR?
When General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force in the UK and across the European Union in May 2018, the broad aim was to put power over consumers’ data back into the hands of the individual.
The new law says that data held on recognisable individuals must now be “processed lawfully, fairly and in a transparent manner,” that it must be only used for the purposes that it was collected for before being safely disposed of, and that it must be kept accurate. Consumers have a right to see what data a company holds on them – and to have it corrected if it is inaccurate.
It’s about, says the Information Commissioner’s Office guide to the subject “offering real choice and control.” It adds: “Genuine consent should put individuals in charge, build trust and engagement and enhance your reputation.” Failing to get clear consent could have harmful effects, it warned: “Relying on inappropriate or invalid consent could destroy trust and harm your reputation - and may leave you open to large fines.”
At a practical level this meant that retailers should make sure their consent processes met the standard, were specific enough for the use that they intended to make of the data, and required a positive opt-in. They also had to make it easy for consumers to change their mind and withdraw their consent.
The email effect
Back in May, consumers probably first noticed the arrival of the GDPR regulations because they received a flood of emails from retailers and service providers of all kinds, notifying them that those organisations held personal information on them and offering them the option to review or delete it. Now that the dust has settled, the first evidence is emerging of what’s changed as a result of the legislation.
Recent research from the DMA suggests that shoppers are taking more control of the marketing that they receive, and that that’s likely to be as a result of the GDPR regulations. Its Consumer Email Tracker 2019 found that most consumers (59%) said they preferred brands to get in touch with them via email. It also found that respondents were signed up to fewer emails than they were before GDPR. In 2019, it said, shoppers received email messages from an average of nine different brands. That’s down from 12 in 2017. “The figures,” commented the DMA, “are a potential by-product of the new laws and consumers’ belief they have more control over the marketing emails they receive.”
It found that shoppers were more likely to sign up to receive brand emails because they wanted discounts and offers (51%) but were also likely to do so because they were a regular customer (46%) or because they had joined a loyalty scheme.
But while loyalty may encourage them to sign up, other factors led to them unsubscribing. The primary reason for unsubscribing was because people received too many messages (59%), followed by the decision to opt out because the messages were no longer relevant (43%) or because they didn’t recognise the brand (43%).
So just how do retailers take control? Most (70%) people, found the DMA study, unsubscribe through the brand website or by clicking a button in an email. Once they’ve done that, 40% expect never to hear from the brand again via email, or to only hear from them through transactional emails relating to a specific purchase (23%).
But a minority of shoppers (17%) also expect to be able to change their email preferences or complete a survey that shows marketers why they are leaving. That seems to be a smart option for retailers to offer, since those shoppers may well choose to tailor their agreement to suit their own preferences rather than opt out altogether. Asked how they respond when given control over how often a company gets in touch, 36% said they would like to reduce the frequency of emails, and 31% would like to choose the products or services they get emails about. Those two factors were among the key reasons why a consumer might hit unsubscribe. Marketers that get it right can continue to send customers messages – on their own terms.
“It’s fundamental,” said Rachel Aldighieri, managing director of the DMA, commenting on the organisation’s study “that marketers combine convenience and relevance, building relationships based on transparency and trust.”
And Phil Draper, chief marketing officer at dotdigital, which sponsored the DMA report, agrees. “Creating powerful two-way relationships with consumers should be a the core of all modern marketing strategies. It’s what consumers want and what marketers are working to deliver. The fact that brands have reduced the number of emails they’re sending is an indication that brands are focusing more on delivering relevant and interesting content.”
One retailer says that retailers operating in a GDPR world now use email differently. Jack Cooper, digital marketing manger at Andertons Music Co, said: “I think the goal posts for emails have definitely changed. It’s not so much a mass communication took as it was a few years ago when you might send a couple of hundred thousand people a mass email, and drive them to the website for a small percentage of sales.
"Our conundrum is making a business case so it’s small enough to be effective but large enough to be relevant to the user. Can we follow up the post-purchase campaign based on where the customer is in their lifecycle and in terms of relevance? I think we’re in that kind of period, working out if that’s going to be a long-term and successful piece of work for us. We’re fortunate that we have enough content to be able to do that, and I think it shows that the focus is on providing an experience rather than a hard sale approach.”
Engaging beyond email
Email may be the key channel for retailers to contact shoppers, but it is not the only one. The information they hold may also be used for text messages related to a transaction they have made, to send catalogues by post, or for notifications via a smartphone app. Some leading retailers are now making a virtue out of ensuring that their customers are clear what data they hold, and how they will use it.
Peter Thomas, CTO at Attraqt said on a recent InternetRetailing webinar, The Journey from Data to Shopping Experiences: Making AI Work For You, that trust and confidence were prerequisites to a good shopper experience. “GDPR has given rights to the shopper to find out what information is being held out them and to have control over that,” said Thomas. Many websites, he says, are currently presenting consent through the choice of accepting or rejecting website cookies. On clicking to find out more, users may discover that they can make more sophisticated choices to regulate the communications they are sent, and decide whether data can be passed to third parties for marketing purposes.
“For myself I’ve come very distrustful of that type of interaction because by default I’m agreeing to share everything – I’m not sharing just the data that’s going to enhance my shopping experience which is really why I want to do,” he said. But, he said, there was a better way, and one that with better implications for business reputations.
“A number of the clients that we’ve been working with are really tuned into this trusting connection with their shoppers because it’s a very important part of their brand,” said Thomas.
“They are deliberately designing their shopping experience to be very explicit about consent so that they present right up front exactly what information is collected, exactly what it’s used for and make it very clear how shoppers can revise their choices going forward, so there’s no confusion about what data is being collected. It’s very open and it generates a lot of confidence on the part of the user. Trust takes years to build, seconds to break and forever to repair. That’s very clear when you’re building customer confidence.”
How IRUK Top500 retailers handle consent
We took a look at a number of leading IRUK Top500 retailers to see how they deal with consent on their websites.
One Top500 retailer whose brand is built on trust is John Lewis. On clicking on the ‘sign me up for emails’ button on its website, shoppers are offered clear information about what type of messages they can expect to receive. Customers can then go on to sign in to an account and amend their marketing preferences, choosing whether to receive emails and get texts from John Lewis, Waitrose or John Lewis Finance. The retailer also points out how shoppers can use their smartphone settings to stop receiving notifications from the app.
Over at Marks & Spencer, the retailer has a video explaining what details it collects and how they are used to make personalised offers to shoppers through its M&S Sparks club. Those signed into its account can give or withdraw their consent to receive marketing messages. The retailer also advises shoppers on the fastest ways to unsubscribe from its text messages and emails.
Argos too enables those signed into accounts to amend their marketing opt ins, and also enables them to choose whether the site should remember them - and anything they have left in their trolleys against a future visit.
Finally, Amazon enables customers, once signed in, to determine their direct mail and email preferences, promising, “We’d like to stay in touch, but only in ways that you find useful.” These leading retailers are enabling shoppers to ensure that they’re only getting the marketing information that they want, via the channel that they want to receive it. By doing so they’re not only working to comply with GDPR, but they’re also ensuring that the customer gets the level of engagement that they want, on the terms that they want it. That’s got to be good for fostering trusted relationships between retailer and customer well into the future.

Argument with car insurance company any advice?
recently suffered total loss due to fire of my car and claimed on my insurance policy they came and valued the car after the accident and then took 300 quid off for policy excess however it clearly states in their policy that they cover permanently fitted radio/audio equipment to max of 500 euro , fair enough so i submitted my claim to cover the radio which was destroyed with the car as a result of fire , cost of cd/radio was 149.00 in argos but company now say that their definition of permanently fitted radio is one that has been fitted in the factory when car was made but my car is secondhand and had a sony cd/radio fitted when i bought the car . Now they say this is not covered as is not classed as permanently fitted , to me a permanently fitted radio is one that you cannot take out of the car unless you are replacing it , some cd/mp3 players are easily removed for security and can be taken from the car each evening but this is not the case with mine Anyone else out there been taken for a ride by their insurance company , was thinking of legal action as they should have specified factory fitted radio in their advertising instead of permanently fitted Had arguement with them for 30 mins but they kept saying that the radio/audio had to be factory fitted from new""

I was in a car accident and the insurance company wont pay me.?
I was rear-ended back in March of 2012. I was at a complete stop on the freeway and the guy hit me going about 30 mph. The force of him hitting me pushed me into the person in front of me, and that pushed them into the person in front of them. There was no visible damage to the cars in front of me and they left without leaving or taking any information. Now my issue is: When I tried calling the person's insurance company, the insurance adjuster told me that because there were 2 other people involved and they did not leave any information that they cannot give me coverage because the guy who hit me has a very low coverage rate and if the other two people called to get money they wouldn't be able to pay it. And that I have to wait 2 years before I can recieve any payment for the damage to my car. I did not have insurance at the time of the accident so my current insurance company will not help me with this issue. Please let me know what I can do! I live in California by the way.""

so when i was 21 i got a dui (it's called an oui here in Maine, but same thing). I have signed up, paid for, and in 2 weeks will be taking the DEEP class required by the state of Maine in order to be licensed again. basically i am curious about my insurance premiums. i haven't had my license for almost 4 years, but i have read online that your insurance will have to be sr22 and all expensive and whatnot for THREE years. also, i have since turned 25 and will be 26 soon, so i expect a rate decrease from that. i guess my question is: have i managed to bypass the higher insurance rates because it has been 4 years? if so, it almost seems too good to be true. i am highly suspicious. can anyone give me some insight as to what to expect when purchasing my insurance? thanks chums""

People who can't afford health insurance are quacks?
i see the merits of having universal health care, kind of, but it seems to me that the problem is a lot of middle class citizens who just decide nto to purchase health insurance on the premise that they cannot afford it , and instead opt to buy material goods that are solely for luxury. you cant go out and buy nice cars and houses and bypass health insurance and then cry it off that the government should give free care to everryone.......i definitely agree it should be cheaper for the poor etc. bottom line: ppl need to realize health is the most important thing in there life, and satisfy that need, before thinking about personal possesions (nice cars etc)""

How Shop Direct, Argos, River Island and Argos set out to deliver the right experience
The retail interaction doesn’t stop once a shopper clicks on the buy button. Emma Herrod investigates why the delivery experience is just the start of the opportunity to connect.
Convenience and price have been driving the growth of online retailing and the same factors are of equal importance to consumers when deciding how they want their purchase delivered. While some shoppers say that they choose one delivery method over another because of price – with the free option predominantly offered by retailers requiring a minimum spend – for other purchases convenience is chosen. This convenient method may be delivery to a locker, pick up point or click and collect location because the shopper knows that they will be passing the location at a certain time. Delivery to home on a specific day or at a certain time also offers this convenience.
This surety of getting the product at a certain time extends back up the supply chain with shoppers wanting to know that something is in stock at a particular location before they go to the store. This has been a driver of reserve and collect services whereby a shopper can go online and reserve an item in a particular store and pick it up a set amount of time later.
For some retailers this can be as short a time as five minutes, with store staff collecting the item from a shelf and putting it into a holding area such as a customer services desk or ring fencing it from amongst the stock allocation. For others, the reserve online, pick up in store is a longer process with the item being transferred from another store – as per Argos’s hub and spoke method – or from a central distribution centre.
“This nirvana of getting a clear view of inventory irrespective of where it is, whether it’s in the warehouse, being moved somewhere or in a store is critical to allowing retailers to sell in today’s world,” says Craig Summers, managing director UK, Manhattan Associates. “It’s a simple thing to say but a really hard thing for people to do,” he adds.
All of these connections make the customer feel that they are in charge of fulfilment of their order and give them confidence that they can get the item they want to buy from the right location and in a way that suits them. The anything, any time, any place predictability of omnichannel retailing is becoming less of a differentiator for the customer experience and more something that is simply expected as the norm.
In the last year alone, fashion retailer Asos has introduced 200 related delivery improvements around the world. Since October 2017, it has been rolling out same-day delivery to UK customers in selected Leeds, London and Manchester postcodes. These customers can pay £9.95 in order to receive their parcel – which must be ordered by 10am – between 6pm and 10pm. “We’ll be pushing back cut off times to midday soon,” says Mark Holland, supply chain director, Asos.
The Asos Instant service will be expanded further throughout 2018, joining the retailer’s other UK delivery options that include next-day delivery, click and collect, one-hour delivery times and free returns as standard on all of its orders. Looking further ahead, Holland believes that delivery to a mobile rather than a fixed point is something that should be investigated.
Chris Haighton, head of logistics at Shop Direct, believes that it’s easy to get distracted by new technology and that retailers need to concentrate on the basics in order to give customers the best delivery experience. “You have to build on solid foundations,” he told delegates at the recent MetaPack Delivery Conference.
At Shop Direct, delivery is seen as a hygiene factor. It’s also the biggest driver of customer complaints when delivery goes wrong. Haighton explains that getting the delivery experience right for your customers is all down to listening to them. Shop Direct customers “want free delivery. Behind that then is convenience, speed and a number of other options but primarily free,” he says.
Shop Direct therefore focuses on ensuring that the delivery proposition fits with the customer lifestyle. “We try to break the proposition down into all of the different elements of the journey starting with product setup , setting up the carriers for success, in checkout and the checkout page, capturing the right information there and refining that all the way down the process to the point at which when you make the delivery the customer has the right communication, the expectation has been set in the right way, the carrier has been set up for success right the way through the chain,” says Haighton.
Regardless of which company is carrying out the delivery, Shop Direct aims go get three things right in order to give the customer the right experience: get the parcel to the customer’s door on time; land it with the customer first time; get the communications such as tracking and customer information right. This communication is vitally important, according to Haighton. “We drive all of this so that we minimise customer communications back to us because that reduces cost and delivers a hygiene factor,” He adds “It’s all about making sure we minimise that level of failure right the way down the line,” he says.
At River Island, the key has been to look at customer service in terms of getting back to customers when there’s an issue and having a good resolution process in place. This has meant “putting the best carriers into the business that service the customers and make sure that when there is a problem it’s resolved very quickly and the problems are few and far between,” says Martin Goldstein, head of purchasing at River Island.

Highlights From 12 Countries in Europe That I Visited This Year
Wandering Earl
On October 26th, I’ll be leaving Gran Canaria and making my way to India. And with that trip, I shall say a big goodbye to all the countries in Europe as I won’t be back before the end of the year.
I’ve actually spent a decent amount of time traveling around Europe in 2017 though, much more than usual. I think it’s been 12 countries.
My European experiences began back in February when I flew from Miami to India, changing planes in Frankfurt. I had a long 6 hour layover there, most of which I spent half-asleep in one of the airport lounges (thanks to the Priority Pass that comes with my Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card). I remember eating a sandwich at some point and then, before I knew it I was boarding my second flight, Frankfurt to Kuwait.
It was a quick stop but my subsequent visits to this continent would certainly be longer.
This post is a recap of all the countries in Europe that I’ve visited this year, with my personal highlights and a couple of recommendations in case you happen to be headed to any of the same destinations.
12 Countries in Europe
GREECE
In May, I landed in Athens. My girlfriend and I were in Greece to meet up with my mom who had traveled in from the US. We spent 5 days in Athens followed by a week on the island of Santorini. I really enjoyed Athens. With a nice list of interesting neighborhoods to explore, plenty of historical sights beyond the Acropolis, excellent food, markets (the Monastiraki Flea Market is definitely worth a visit) and pretty good weather year round, it’s a city that offers plenty to do no matter what kind of traveler you may be.
Highlights (Athens) – The food. I mean, it was nice walking around the Plaka neighborhood and all that but the food, anywhere we sat to eat, was the real highlight. Give me eggplant, fava (split peas), saganaki (grilled cheese), tzatziki, salad and stuffed vine leaves every day and you will have no complaints from me!
Highlights (Santorini) – I could just say everything and that would indeed be true but to be more specific – the magical village of Imerovigli, the stunning walk to Oia, renting a car and driving to Akrotiri, sunset every single night over the caldera and the Venetsanos winery…and the food (Argo restaurant = some of the best food I’ve ever eaten).
Accommodation (Santorini) – Merovigla Studios – Great low-key, budget place with large rooms and perhaps the best location on Santorini, with perfect views across the island and water (see the photo above!). It’s situated in the small, cliff-top village of Imerovigli, away from the big crowds of the more popular Fira but only a beautiful 20 minute walk away.
ALBANIA
We came to Tirana, Albania pretty much for no reason. We had a few days in between Greece and meeting up with one of my closest friends in Montenegro so we chose the conveniently located Tirana as our stopover. It was my second time here and we spent most of our four day stay wandering around various neighborhoods, hanging out and working at a handful of cafes and just taking it easy. There aren’t a ton of things to do or see here but that was perfectly fine with us. Besides, as you’ll see below, the main highlight of our visit was exactly the kind of main highlight that I prefer!
Highlights (Tirana) – My favorite experience by far involved a hair dresser in the Blloku district of the city, the Italian language and a local fish restaurant. Here’s the full story.
Accommodation (Tirana) – Vila e Arte – Small, quiet hotel with comfortable budget rooms right in the city center. For around $35 per night, it’s a great deal. Includes a nice breakfast, too.
MONTENEGRO
Once it was time to meet my friend, we took a ride from Tirana across the border and up to the small town of Kotor, Montenegro. It was also my second time here but this is one of the countries in Europe that I wouldn’t mind returning to over and over again. Montenegro itself is small and the town of Kotor is tiny, and quiet, but the setting is gorgeous right there at the end of a mountain-lined bay. The old town is atmospheric and full of charm and the whole place just feels like you’ve been transported into a fairy tale.
Highlights (Kotor) – All it takes in Kotor is one look out the window at the mountains, one stroll along the water or one wander through the narrow lanes of the old walled town to feel good. There is pretty much nothing to do here apart from enjoying the dramatic setting but, hey, sometimes that’s all you need for a rewarding trip. If you venture into the old town, make sure you do so in the morning, afternoon and evening…it has a different feel each time. And just before sunset, head up the path to the Castle Of San Giovanni to really get an idea of your surroundings. It’s worth the hike. (For food, go to the inexpensive waterfront Konoba Akustik for an excellent meal and try to find the very local Fortuna Food for a quick, dirt-cheap and very delicious lunch.
CROATIA
Oh dear Croatia. This was my third time to Croatia and second visit to Dubrovnik. And once again, I struggled. It’s a pretty place, without a doubt. The old town is indeed interesting and pleasing to the eye. But just like my previous visits, I just don’t get what all the fuss is about that brings so many people to this town. I must be a weirdo, that’s the only conclusion I can reach.
Highlights (Dubrovnik) – Watching the sunset every evening from the balcony of our Airbnb. And taking the ferry along the coast to the village of Cavtat was pleasant, too. Apart from that though, I’m not sure what else to list.
ITALY
On the other hand…I love Italy. How can you go wrong here, at least as a tourist? With that said, there were only 2 reasons that we came to Italy on this occasion. The first was to hang out with some friends and second was to go with those friends to the Guns N Roses concert in the town of Imola. The friends lived in Pisa, so that’s where we spent our first 4 days and then we went to the concert and spent two nights in Bologna after that.
Highlights – The Guns N Roses concert!! Apart from getting there super early and standing in the sun for 8 hours before they came on stage, it was excellent and well worth traveling to Italy for. And of course, I also had a great time meeting my girlfriend’s friends, eating real Italian food (awesome pizza at In Provincia di Pizza just outside of Pisa) and just being in Pisa itself, away from the leaning tower and crowds, soaking up the atmosphere of the regular neighborhoods with someone who had actually lived there.
GERMANY
The trip to Germany was to visit another friend of mine in Berlin. The idea was to spend all of our time in that one city and that’s exactly what we ended up doing. The days were spent working, wandering around different areas, hanging out with my friend, eating good, cheap food and shopping for warm clothes as the autumn winds and low temperatures hit us quite unexpectedly.
Highlights (Berlin) – The food market on Thursday nights in the Kreuzberg neighborhood, the Kreuzberg neighborhood itself with all its local eateries, cafes, parks and inspiring vibe and a vegan Vietnamese restaurant we found called Soy. Vegan or not, it’s mighty good. We went three times. One of the best restaurants I’ve found all year actually, and cheap.
Accommodation – Leonardo Royal Hotel Alexanderplatz – We went for a little splurge here and it was a solid choice. Very comfortable rooms in the city center, close to public transportation and within walking distance to Alexanderplatz and all kinds of restaurants, cafes, nightlife and activities.
SWEDEN
The time had come for the Midsummer Festival! And to meet up with some more of my girlfriend’s family and friends. It was a great combination for a trip to this beautiful country, my first visit back here in many years. Our destination was not Stockholm though. We were in the far, far, far lesser known towns of…Skovde and Lidkoping. Much to do in these places? Nope. But any slice of Sweden seems to come with that uniquely enchanting, calming ambience that is quite appealing at all times and which only a handful of countries in Europe can offer.
Highlights – Beautiful nature everywhere. We were in places that nobody has ever heard of but it doesn’t matter. All you need to do in Sweden is go for a walk. Find a trail near a lake, head off into the middle of some fields, find a forest path…even the 10 minute walk from where we were staying in Skovde to the supermarket was filled with enough beautiful nature to instantly turn a bad mood into a good one.
ROMANIA
At this point, it was time for me to lead my Wandering Earl Wander Across Romania Tour and so I flew to Bucharest. I arrived a couple of days before the tour began and then for two weeks I traveled around with my group. We visited Brasov, Sighisoara, Corund, Cluj-Napoca, Hunedoara, Sibiu and the Transfagarasan and no matter how many times I travel around this country, I simply can’t get enough of it. Trust me when I say that Romania is going to be on everyone’s travel radar very soon!
Highlights – The region of Corund. This was the first time I took my group to this region and it won’t be the last. I’m talking about real, traditional life out here, nothing touristy whatsoever. We ate with locals in their homes, visited their local workshops (not operating for tourists), met so many local people, tasted their homemade drinks, roamed around beautiful, remote plateaus, visited a straw hat museum (sounds corny but it’s pretty damn cool) and more. My 2018 Romania tours will also include this region as it’s perhaps the most local and authentic place I’ve ever visited in Europe.
Accommodation – Casa Lia in Sighisoara – This one is my favorite. Run by a sweet couple, it’s a chance to have a real homestay in the heart of this medieval village. Comfy, low-cost rooms with hospitality like you won’t believe. It’s not just accommodation, it’s a complete and wonderful travel experience.
HUNGARY
Second time in Budapest. And sort of like with Dubrovnik, I’ve still yet to join the masses and become a huge fan. It certainly has nice buildings but I just didn’t connect with the place again. Maybe it was because I had arrived from Romania, one of my favorite countries in Europe. No idea.
Highlights (Budapest) – Our nightly walks along the Danube River, past the famous Parliament building, across the Széchenyi Chain Bridge and around the area of the Buda Castle. The Central Market Hall was good to visit as well, but compared to the last time I was there, it seems to have become specifically a tourist destination.
ROMANIA (again)
Back to Romania…this time to visit my girlfriend’s aunt in the small village of Pesac. We went from city to city for much of our European travels and then suddenly, there we were, in the quiet countryside. Surrounded by dirt roads with well-maintained country homes, forests and fields, large family gardens, horse-drawn carts, cows and goats and dogs roaming around and a complete lack of noise, pollution, traffic or any worry whatsoever, it was the most serene experience I’ve had this year. Throw in some home-cooked food, much of which was made from locally grown products, some local home-made wine, evenings outside walking and chatting in the warm air and some wonderfully kind people…and I quickly realized how unnecessarily complicated we human beings have made our lives.
Highlights – Every single meal (such good food!!), the evening walks through the village and letting go of that idea that I need to constantly be running around doing something ‘exciting’. Just being around good people and good food, while breathing in good air, brings far more joy and excitement than we tend to realize.
SERBIA
When you’re only 30 minutes from the border with Serbia, it’s worth going across for a weekend trip. And so off we went, spending a couple of nights in Belgrade. I enjoy visiting Belgrade. I can’t quite pinpoint what it is that I like but the big city has a welcoming, laid-back atmosphere along with nice markets, decent food, parks and quaint neighborhoods, great nightlife and a very livable feel. Again, it’s hard for me to give specifics but I’ve just had an overall positive experience during my two visits to this city.
Highlights (Belgrade) – The long walk that leads from the Belgrade Fortress at the edge of the Danube and Sava Rivers, up the bustling Knez Mihailova pedestrian street, through the Skadarlija neighborhood with it’s old-style restaurants, cafes and bars and then twisting through the residential streets heading east until you reach the Pijaca Kalenić Farmer’s Market. There’s lots of historical sights along the way and the Nikola Tesla Museum as well.
Accommodation (Belgrade) – Centar Guesthouse – We thought this was a joke when we found it online. It seemed way too cheap for the extremely central location and seemingly good rooms. Turned out to be real. Simple, clean rooms with everything you need, modern bathrooms and less than 20 seconds walk from the main Republic Square, all for 35 Euros.
CZECH REPUBLIC
Our original plan was to spend 6 weeks in Prague but after getting a late start on our apartment search, there wasn’t much left for a good price and location. So we decided to simply stop here for 5 days en route to the Canary Islands instead. Anyway, Prague is popular, it’s beautiful, it’s one of those cities that definitely needs to be seen. Of course, we spent some time checking out the major sights – the castle, the cathedrals, the old town, Wenceslas Square and so on – but it turned out to be the time we spent away from those places that really stuck in our minds.
Highlights (Prague) – An evening out with friends in the vibrant Vinohrady neighborhood and our afternoon wander to Vyšehrad, an old fortress in the south part of the city along the Vltava River. While it might not be as well-known as other landmarks in the city, it makes for a great afternoon excursion. Walking all over the hilltop site allows you to escape from the massive crowds of tourists and the noise of the old town, while still soaking up some interesting history (check out The Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul) and great views over the city.
SPAIN
That brings me to Spain. Technically, I’m in Spain, although, not on the mainland. I’m in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands. And since Prague didn’t work out as a long-term destination, Gran Canaria took that role instead. So far, I’d say this was definitely the right decision. Not only is Gran Canaria full of really awesome things to do and see – mountains, villages, beaches, sand dunes, hiking trails, remote national parks, surfing and more – but Las Palmas is one of the most livable cities I’ve ever been to. For a fraction of what it costs to live in most countries in Europe, you get perfect weather, a laid-back island lifestyle, excellent Spanish food, a large international community of travelers, digital nomads and expats and no shortage of activities and events to join. With two weeks left of our stay here, we already understand why so many people claim this island to be one of the most ideal places to hang out in Europe!
Highlights – The ridiculously gorgeous drive we did the other day. We went from Las Palmas to the Point of Galdar, over to the picturesque towns of Agaete and Puerto de las Nieves, and then way up into the mountains. We drove along narrow, cliffside roads that took us on a several hour, remote adventure that, apart from being a death-defying experience, offered some of the most impressive scenery I’ve seen in a long, long time. I genuinely can’t wait to explore some more.
So, thank you Europe. It’s been a most rewarding year and I look forward to visiting more of you in 2018. Countries such as Poland, Denmark and Belarus are high up on the list!
Did you visit Europe this year? Are you planning a trip to any countries in Europe, maybe next year? Any questions?
