since im in a ranting mood this mornight and this one has been building up again recently so ofc i gotta let it out:
pls free all the encanto characters from the really severe projection that erases everything about them, from their personality to their character development to their genuine traits and more, and makes them into something they're either not or worse than they actually are
this is especially about mirabel, isabela, alma, mirabel, and the rest of the madrigals in some ways
yes, i said mirabel twice (and i would say isabela and alma twice too but mirabel is the one usually affected by projection the most)
anyway, free themmmmm rahhhhhh
(to clarify: projection is not bad, but when it gets too much and throws everything we know about them out the window, thats a big hell no)

PEGGYYYYYY BTW you mentioned an Encanto AU thing awhile ago right? I keep thinking about it skshsksbns I'd love to hear more about what you'd figured out, if you're willing 👁️👁️
- hero-of-the-wolf
Yeah haha I did, I can’t remember if I ever posted much about it? I didn’t really do anything with it, I just had fun figuring out characters after I watched the movie the first few times XD I don’t think I kept my notes though, lemme see if I remember who was who hmm...
Wind was Mirabel, since I thought it would be cool for him to be the only one without a gift since he’s sort of the hero known for not like, having the hero’s spirit exactly, you know? And he’s exuberant like her it fits XD
Wild is Camilo, sorry it just really fits I think. He’s a silly guy.
Four and Hyrule I couldn’t totally decide, because they could both be Antonio, and both be Dolores. I don’t think I ever decided which they were going to be, but they’re both one of those. They both fit!! Ack!!
Warriors is Isabella and Twilight Luisa. I mixed things around with what they do (Warriors is going to court Midna, he does not want to do this but feels pressured to because he’s the golden child, Twilight likes Midna but doesn’t say anything and struggles with being constantly reliable, etc), but those are the basic roles.
Abuela is actually Hylia. I thought that would be something interesting to explore, and really, who else fits there? Plus like... First as her husband who dies?? It’s perfect. And dos ourugitas is such a them song.
I was a little torn on Bruno for a while, but I think Legend fits there nicely (even if the ages are really wonky, but that can be messed with). Time could also be him though? That would mess up the other idea I had for him though. This one is what I had the most trouble with lol. Maybe Legend could be a brother instead of an uncle, and that would fix things. Dunno.
If Time isn’t Bruno, he’s Wind’s (and Warriors’ and Twilight’s) dad, married to Malon of course. It makes sense for her to be the person with magic cooking, so even though it’s a little weird to have Hylia be her mom, I guess that’s how it works. Though admittedly that would be a funny gift for Time. Unless I change it. 🤣
And Sun and Sky are Pepa and Felix, I mean come on there’s nobody else for them. Sun with weather powers!!! Hello!!! They have Four and Hyrule and Wild as kids.
I think... that’s everyone? Yeah. I think. Ta da XD

OMG I DIDN’T KNOW THERE WAS AN ENCANTO ACCOUNT WITH CRYPTID THOUGHTS HWHDJWJJWHDA Sorry just got a little excited after seeing all the content you have. Mirabel and Dolores being just 👁️👁️ I really love it and Antonio just being a little gremlin kid yeah yeah that’s him. I love what you do with the adults too and I’m just seeing everything like 👀👀👀. I honestly didn’t think I’d find someone when I searched for ‘Encanto cryptid’ but I’m happy I came across your posts. more so because I have my own cryptid Au and I love how Dolores is infinitely 👁️👁️ in both minds but for different reasons. anyways just doing this to tell you that I love your ideas and designs so much ✨✨✨
YEAHHHHH RAHGGGG❗❗❗
That one was made by another creator and I just helped, can't take all the credit <333 BUT YES!! Indeed, we love all kinds of aus here, including creepy ones <33
Creepy staring Dolores seems to be a recurring thing...NOT THAT THAT'S BAD 🗣🗣🗣 Honestly I always think of that one drafted storyboard where it was her, Mirabel and Bruno and it was like that one Jurassic Park scene LMAOOOO
And then there's the super radical au (by queenofthedisneyverse), the more recent one, where all of them have creepy stares. GLAD YOU LOVE THE DESIGNS WEEEEEEEE
Love that <33

So I just had an interesting revelation after an exchange of comments with a writer on ao3. Cause I think I finally figured out ✨Dolores✨
Tumblr media
I realized that she and Mirabel are pretty similar people. And while some aspects of their lives and circumstances parallel one another, they don’t have quite enough in common to be all that close.
Mainly, their family is the glue that binds them together. So, they love each other, but they don’t know each other very well, or spend a whole lot of time together.
As they pointed out, Dolores doesn’t fully respect Mirabel. Not enough to take her seriously. In fact, it’s quite likely that Dolores pities her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah her cousin is gift-less and different from everyone else, but at least she has hobbies and free time. At least she doesn’t have to deal with any of the stress and drawbacks that comes with having a magical gift. And Dolores, of all people, would know.
Between the disasters she prevents; the secrets she keeps; the damage control she has to do; her mother’s weather; her struggles with her own gift; her crush on Mariano; and caring for her younger brothers, as she is the eldest sibling; on top of all her anxieties, Dolores has far too much on her mind to worry about Mirabel. She just isn’t a priority nor her responsibility. Pretty similar to Alma in that regard.
Tumblr media
It’s not a pretty side of Dolores, but it makes her human. It makes her relatable. She is not perfect, no one is, and we shouldn’t expect her to be.
On the other hand, I think Mirabel sympathizes with Dolores but that won’t stop her from trying to butter her prima up and asking her for favors. She doesn’t really know Dolores and I don’t think she trusts Dolores either, at least not yet, (which is honestly, valid). She also might not see her as a role model, not the way she does for every other woman in their family.
Tumblr media
This is made evident in “Waiting on a Miracle,” and “The Family Madrigal” where she expounds upon and sings everyone’s praises but Dolores’s. I don’t think Mirabel knows what Dolores does other than ‘she can hear everything we’re saying.’ We, as the audience have to guess, to infer what Dolores’s role in the community is. Dolores just isn’t someone on Mirabel’s radar.
Again, this is a character flaw for Mirabel; a blind spot that makes her all the more relatable to us. She’s not immune to taking people for granted or overlooking their hard work.
However, even though they’re not close to each other they don’t go out of their way to hurt one another the way Isa and Mirabel do.
Tumblr media
Both of them care very deeply about their family and would do anything in their power to make them proud, protect them & make them happy. This is why Mirabel helps Antonio to his door. This is why Dolores goes out of her way to speak up, unprompted, for the first time, to share her honest thoughts and opinions about Bruno.
Someone that she empathizes with. Someone she loves so much, she kept the fact that he was hiding in the walls a secret for ten years! If you consider all of this together, it’s no wonder she blabbed at dinner.
Despite how wrong it was she was operating from a place of stress and anxiety, not malice (like some would assume).
Tumblr media
I think during reconstruction for Casita, and without the magic hanging over them, Dolores and Mirabel finally find that report they’ve been missing out on.
The whole family is relearning how to respect one another and truly understand their needs and personal boundaries. To be more proactive in showing how much they love and appreciate one another, instead of leaving things unsaid. They spend more time together actually bonding and listening to one another.
Building a relationship they didn’t know was missing for the past ten years. Just like Mirabel and her sisters. Or Alma and her children and grandchildren. How beautiful is that?

My Grandkid HC’s
ISABELA
Lesbian. I’m sorry I just can’t see her being into guys it just doesn’t work in my brain.
Also trans of the gender (mtf)
Since she’s dropped her perfect persona, Isabela has been pulling pranks, ESPECIALLY on known little shit head Camilo. He doesn’t know whether to be proud or extremely annoyed.
Can’t cook or bake she’ll set the kitchen aflame
Always walks barefoot on the grass
Has names for most of her plants, especially the cacti
Doesn’t really involve herself in farmers work unless there is an emergency.
Developed a skill for gardening without her gift, and continues to do so even once she’s gotten it back. There’s something special about watching plants grow over time.
She still makes bouquets for events, but they’ve lost their conservative look for something more ‘Isabela’
Unlike most of her family she doesn’t mind bugs (unless they are in her room)
Very high pain tolerance. Likely due to smiling all day and cacti thorns.
She still likes pastel colors but they aren’t high on her list of favorite colors, so she opts for darker colors when choosing cloths.
She used to bite people as a kid
Has conflicting feelings on animals because on one hand yeah they are cute on the other she has to shoo them away from eating her plants every other week
Has a large man eating plant named ‘Rosita’
Sometimes she’ll take whatever is in Mirabel’s hand, put it on a high shelf she cannot reach, and walk away.
Can actually be scarier then Luisa believe it or not
SNORES SO LOUDLY the only person who can handle it is her gf
Not big on physical affection and often uses gift giving as her way of showing love (platonically and romantically)
DOLORES
Incredible musician who could basically play any instrument you hand her
She sings lullabies to the younger family members
Personally I imagine her as the only straight grandkid but obvi she is supportive of lgbtq+ since half her family is apart of it
She wouldn’t come out of her room when she first got her gift, but her parents and a very supportive Isabela eventually coaxed her out
She has headphones painted red and gold by Mirabel
autism (vine boom sound effect)
As much as she loves Isabela and appreciates all of Luisa’s hardwork; out of her cousins her and Mira get along the best.
Speaking of that Isabela and Dolores’s relationship, much like Camilo and Mirabel’s, soured as the pressure to uphold the family name increased. Before the magic disappeared they basically ignored each other, but began to reconcile during the rebuild and became close again.
Her room is sound proof (I know people say otherwise idc she needs a BREAK) but during the night she’ll sometimes open her window since it’s much quieter
I do believe she has SOME control over her gift, and in order to hear very far she has to hold a hand against her ear. When she isn’t, things are amplified but not unbearable. She’s kinda just gotten used to it.
Dolores love language is, unsurprisingly, words of affirmation.
If she gets stressed and doesn’t have access to her headphones, she’ll listen for the nearest family members voice (Ex: her fathers laugh, her mothers ranting, Camilo’s jokes, Antonio communicating with his animals)
Gets in on Isabela’s pranks now and again. She is mostly polite but has a devious side, especially with her cousins and siblings.
LUISA
I still adhere to the concept Luisa has some sort of ‘calm’ room. Wether it be an amusement park or a sauna she deserves to have somewhere to destress
Has a pile of stuffed animals, each with different names
She actually does enjoy doing chores and being active, but struggles to find a stopping point and not overwork herself
She’s more then just brawn, and was always a sharp academic when she was in school
Women enjoyer women enjoyer
VERY physically affectionate she’s giving everyone hugs and crushing their bones
Her and Camilo get along very well after Casita’s rebuild. She likes his energy and ability to let loose, and Camilo respects all the work she does around the Encanto. They mesh well.
When she first got her gift she accidentally broke her dads hand
Her father used to teach her piano, though she sorta fell out of it the older she got. Since casita’s rebuild she’s picked it back up as a hobby.
A big animal person, second to Antonio. She likes patting the donkeys on the head if she gets the chance
Has a hard time sitting down to eat because she’s always getting ready to move
If you give her anything she’ll begin sobbing and thanking you (birthdays and Christmas are rough)
She puts the younger kids if air jail if she has to
She originally struggled to control her gift, and that made her scared to touch anyone in fear she’d hurt them. But Pepa helped Luisa find ways to control the strength as she had to learn with her weather
After she lost her gift she kept trying to move the church as a force of habit
Reads a lot of fantasy novels
Helps Antonio wrangle his animals
CAMILO
(This will be more brief as I have a whole post of HC’s for this mf)
Gay and trans can’t change my mind
Despite always being hungry he cannot stomach fish. Some other seafoods are fine but the smell of fish makes him ill.
Won’t say this out loud: he is kinda legitimately afraid of Isabela ever since he’s become the target of her pranks. No one knows true fear until you realize you are caught in a Isabela prank.
Camilo’s love language is a lot of things, but quality time is high up on his list as he likes living in the moment.
Is a very good artist but gets embarrassed when people try to look at his work
Despite being a stick he is surprisingly strong.
Him and Mirabel used to be close but sort lost that connection the older they got, and even began to fight and butt heads. I like to think they do eventually become close, but it takes a lot of conversation and time.
adhd and autism (vine boom sound effect)
used to bite people as a kid
He likes reading plays and will space out for hours thinking how something translates on a stage
Sometimes he stands in front of a mirror and goes ‘why why why why why why why w
MIRABEL
The silly!!!
Like Isabela: gift giving is her way of showing affection. She loves hand crafting gifts.
This is depressing but when she didn’t get her gift she drew a door on her wall hoping the magic would make it real
Once no one would wake up so she poured water on Camilo’s head and he screamed so loud it woke everyone else up
Mirabel looks extremely innocent but will literally try to stab anyone who bothers her with her sewing needle
She used to write simple picture books for Antonio when they roomed together
She DEF got her own room during the rebuild. Like imagine saving the miracle and your family is just like “anyway go back to the baby room lol” they wouldn’t do that to her
Bisexual icon love to see it
Has zero rizz I’m sorry queen but like she’s a girl failure by heart
Is a bit of old woman and can’t stay up too late without getting tired but in turn wakes up extremely early.
Not the best academic but obviously still very smart.
She’s an empath so if you begin crying she’ll start crying too she can’t help it
Is blinder than a bat if you take her glasses away she cannot see SHIT
ANTONIO
Don’t have too much on him since he is still a baby but I have a few!
His favorite animal is the jaguar! Hence the plushie and his closeness to Parce
He likes matching animals to people, and even has a few animals named after his family.
Animals often tend to just kinda… follow him. If he goes for a walk he might came back with some new friends.
I do think he’s a vegetarian. Maybe not a vegan but eating meat is not easy for him.
He doesn’t always go to his parents if he has nightmares, and will rotate between Dolores, Mirabel, and Camilo.
Kicks in his sleep

You're right about the fact making fictional Colombia part of fictional USA is really fucked up but the villains of Encanto, the reason Alma and her family got displaced, aren't colonizers.
The movie takes place around 1950, the colonization of the Americas began around 1500. What we see in the love isn't colonization, it's the Colombian internal armed conflict, that began around that time and it's still present to this day.
It could also be the Thousand Days' War (1899-1902) since the movie is highly based off of One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez (great book by the way, a must read) and that's where the book is set.
Either way, no colonizers here.
Okay, thank the gods it's not as bad as I thought. Still bad, making fictional Colombia (and as Colombia is referenced several times, the Colombian flag shows up a lot, and there's a lot of Colombian cultural things in the movie, the setting is likely still Colombia, just a fictional town in Colombia) part of a colonial superpower considering the history, but as least they aren't going "Yeah, this woman who was displaced by settler violence and whose husband was murdered by colonizers, she willingly joined a white colonialist and imperialist superpower." At least it's not as bad as that.
I mean, I like that Encanto is showing up because it means that Alma is letting the world back in, not as terrified of the outside as she once was, and that she's trying to rejoin the world in a positive way (them rejoining the world was kind of hinted at with the mountain, which remained broken, making it easier for them to leave and others to enter,) but her joining Auradon isn't the right way to go about it. Allies, sure, maybe, perhaps a trade agreement, but her joining them makes no sense for Alma as a character (she would probably still want to lead just so she can make sure the best interests of her people are being seen to, I doubt she would trust an outsider with that or that the people of her village would be happy about her trusting an outsider with that,) she wouldn't hand over the reigns to someone who has absolutely zero experience with her people (their culture, their values, their beliefs, and them as people since I've no doubt she knows everyone in that town personally, they're likely a very close-knit community with open communication with the leader and running that from a palace far away is not going to work) and who hates magic, which saved the lives of everyone in the Encanto, saved Alma's life, protected them for so many years, and that her family are all blessed with so that they can protect their people from anything like what drove Alma from her home happening again. Beast is not right to lead the Encanto and she would see that. If she joined after Ben became king I could understand that slightly more, but Ben has to be a very different ruler from what the Encanto is used to, what they need. He's a king, Alma's a matriarch. Their leadership roles and styles are too different for her to let Ben take over for her. No, if she was retiring, she'd give the role to one of her children or to Mirabel. Not Ben.
At least Encanto almost up with the timeline. The movie, assuming Pedro died in 1950, would take place in 2000, so if RoR takes place in 2025, I guess Luisa could have a school-age son. But I object strongly to giving him superstrength. Do Dolores, Antonio, and Camilo control the weather? Can Isabela, Mirabel, and Luisa heal people? No. They all have their own unique gifts (even Mirabel, I think, because I think she was chosen to be the next matriarch like Alma because Alma won't live forever, and she just doesn't have power because Alma doesn't have power either,) they don't inherit gifts from their parents beyond inheriting the fact that they will get a gift. Heck, their gifts don't even have something to do with what their parents could do. The closest thing I would accept is Luis (who needs a new name because no other parents gave their children derivitive names so why would Luisa) being very tall built like a stack of bricks like Luisa is, but that's all. Be creative and give him a new gift. And give him two siblings who each represent part of a trifecta (Pepa, Julieta, and Bruno being past, present, and future non-respectively, Isa, Mira, and Luisa being beauty, brains, and brawn, and Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio being "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil) like the creators of Encanto intended
I do have your other asks, just so you know, the answers are just taking a while and also, thank you so much

K, but I want to know about all the WIPs you mentioned! But I shall settle for asking about Incomplete Madrigal and Kindergarten Casita - the last one sounds absolutely adorable.
Awwww thank you!!!
I had to actually stop myself from posting everything I have on these two wips lol I've got to chill, I don't want to post their most exciting parts and then not have enough motivation to finish them!
Okay okay okay look, let's start with
Kindergarten Casita
Somewhere in the city N there is a "magical" kindergarten Casita - according to rumors, its pupils joyfully run here in the morning, and the walls of the old building sing. Its new head, Señorita Daniela, is trying her best to justify the faint hopes of her deceased mother, the previous head of Casita, Señora Maria. The new kindergarten teacher, Señor Bruno, is trying to help her with this.
Honestly, with this title I could've imagined a couple of more obvious AUs 1. Where all the kids are of the same (or close) age, and Casita itself is like a kindergarten; 2. Where Alma is the head of a kindergarten and the triplets are teachers.
That sounds hella cute and I haven't yet encountered similar AUs but! I wasn't able to come up with plots for these AUs so that's not what Kindergarten Casita's about.
That's a really specific AU catering to me only and my love for soppy melodramas I watch with my grandma. It doesn't happen in the Encanto setting but actually somewhere else, closer to where I live and sometime more modern, circa 2000.
All the original characters are present in the story though not all of them are relatives. I actually like what I've come up with for each of them - both design-wise and personality-wise. Though, I'm writing it in my native language so it'll be a bit challenging to finish I guess
And it's a romantic comedy, of course, at least I try to make it funny and romantic lol
And here's a couple of paragraphs I really like:
Returning to her office, Daniela found a short man in front of the door, pacing back and forth with his head down and muttering to himself. His long hair hung down covering his face. Under a long green autumn jacket, he was wearing an almost ironed gray shirt that had most likely once been white, and long brown trousers, one of the legs of which almost reached the floor. He had a bulky brown messenger bag slung over his shoulder. Having rolled up the sleeves of his jacket, he nervously fiddled with the sleeve of his shirt, buttoning and then unbuttoning the cuff. Since Daniela knew all the parents of her pupils, she could say with certainty that pacing in front of her was none other than the new candidate for the vacant position of the kindergarten teacher, whom she had made an appointment with yesterday, Señor Bruno Madrigal. His appearance perfectly matched his agitated tone of voice that she had heard on the phone recently.
Incomplete Madrigal
(honestly, I fully expected this name to be already taken but I was pleasantly surprised. I'm keeping it and never letting go)
Mirabel is determined to bring Bruno and his wife back into family after seeing an almost disastrous way their guilt affects Casita on Antonio's birthday. Surely, if they get accepted back Casita won't suffer anymore. Right?
So yeah, it's an AU where Bruno has a wife but he doesn't stay in Casita and instead moves out.
This wip makes me suffer immensely - I want to make it fun and goofy but all that comes out of it seems like a weak parody of the original movie. I think I will have to try to go in a different direction, but I will not give up ☝️☝️☝️
And here's a couple of paragraphs I like:
You would think that the family of the Encanto matriarch’s only son would live right beside Casita. Maybe, it would even take a less than a minute walk to get to them. Because, you know, they are family. They need to be near to be able to help each other when in need, to visit each other and spend time at one another’s house. It would make sense to live close, right? Apparently, no. Mirabel fought every fiber of her being not to curse as she sprinted through the town’s labyrinth trying to find Bruno’s house. The villagers either didn’t want to give her any directions or their directions were misleading and she would eventually find herself in front of a wrong house. She regretted not asking Bruno or Daniela for directions yesterday before they fled Casita embarrassing her in front of everyone. They at least owed her that.
Thank you again for asking me about my wips!!

Encanto idea:
The whole Encanto realizes they never celebrated Mirabel's Quinceanera, and they only have one month left until it's too late (when she turns 16)
so they plan the party while Antonio distracts the guest of honor until it's time (isabella, Alma, and the villagers may or may not have lingering guilt for their treatment toward Mirabel)
It was a simple fact, even though it was horrifying.
Mirabel had not been given a quinceanera.
Isabela, at the time, hadn't questioned it. She was distracted by Mariano's hints that he would propose sometime this year and Abuela's cheer at the fact. Mirabel's birthday itself had almost slipped her mind. She had summoned a bouquet of flowers- multicolored, like Mirabel's creations- before distracting herself with practicing her reaction to said proposal.
Of course, said proposal had been a disaster, Casita had fallen down, and Isabela had discovered herself and rebuilt her relationship with Mirabel.
Which left a fact niggling at her brain.
Mirabel had not been given a quinceanera.
Abuela felt just as awful as she did about it. In fact, it was her idea to create a make-up quinceanera a month before her sixteenth birthday. It would be a little weird, but hey. All birthdays were weird.
And now Isabela was rummaging through Mirabel's closet, hoping to find a dress that she could take to the seamstress. A month was too little time to make an entirely new dress. The same day was too little time!
But they would make it work. They had made everything else work.
Isabela pushed past a few dresses. No, no, no. This one was already covered in embroidery, this one was too flat, this one had too little ruffles... "Come on, she's gotta have a good dress," Isabela hissed. "Somewhere, come on..."
She came to a stop.
The dress she stared at was flat without the petticoats and Mirabel to fill it up, but the design of embroidery candles, changing the soft peacock blue to a mixture of blue and gold, was show-stopping. No doubt. It was a quinceanera dress.
But why was it here?
"Isa?"
Isabela made a noise that she chose to identify as a yelp, whirling around and slamming the wardrobe shut. Mirabel stared at her with a brow raised, holding a stack of clothes. "Mirabel! Hi! What are you doing here?" Nobody could deny they were sisters with that last part.
"Uh...it's my room?" Mirabel cocked her head. "What are you doing?" Her brows furrowed together. "If you're looking for your black summer dress, I think Camilo took it."
"No, I'm not- Wait, what did you say about my dress-" Wait, no, she could deal with that later. "I was looking for something...else, when I found this." Isabela held out the quinceanera dress. "What is this?"
Mirabel glanced at it as she set the clothes down, the furrow in her brow easing to be replaced by it raising. "My quinceanera dress?"
"No, I mean, why do you have one?" Isabela maybe shook it a little bit. "We never threw you a quinceanera."
Mirabel's brow raised even higher. "Yes, we had one?" She sounded like she was ready to call for their mother. "I mean, you probably don't remember it, you were dancing with Mariano all night." What. "It wasn't a big community event like your quinceanera, but I wanted it to be small."
"...we threw you a small quinceanera?"
"Yeah?" Mirabel stepped forward, raising a hand to Isabela's forehead. "I asked Abuela if it could just be the family and some of my friends. She agreed but insisted we invite the Guzmans." Her brow dropped back into a furrow when she failed to find a fever. "I've always hated big public birthday events, but I like the Guzmans so I agreed. Isabela, are you okay?"
Isabela batted her hand away, panic seizing her heart. If that was true, than she and Abuela had possibly done something really stupid. Mirabel, according to the girl herself, hated big public birthday events and that was exactly what was being set up in the town square. "I'm fine! I just...don't remember your quinceanera, that's all."
Mirabel stared at her even harder. "The pictures are on the quinceanera wall," she said, slowly. "I mean, we don't all look at that wall every day, but it's there. Isabela, I think I should call Mami-"
"I'M FINE!" Isabela shoved past, setting the dress on Mirabel's bed as she passed. "I just remembered that I need to do something." She paused, glancing back at her sister. "I...uh...bye- ABUELA!"
Mirabel cried out behind her, but Isabela was already running.
Hopefully, to stop what was going to be the most awkward event ever.

Antonio's Birthday HC #2:
One of Antonio's most beloved presents: the tiger pillow.
This little guy was once again made by Mirabel, who had then been gifted to her little cousin on the night before he turned 4.
A kind townsperson Antonio befriended gifted him a few twine-bound pages of a late family member's studies on tigers (conducted long before the Encanto), knowing how much Antonio loved and cared for animals. The booklet's promise of another big animal (like jaguars) quickly sparked Antonio's fixation on the unfamiliar striped cat.
Because of his sheer love for the animal, Mirabel made quick work on a tiger-themed present for her cousin's birthday, ready to present it to him on the day he turned four.
Unfortunately, on the night before then, Mirabel found little Antonio in the middle of the night, crying and shaking, having been deeply shook by a terrifying nightmare... one about a tiger.
Since he was unable to easily go back to sleep, Mirabel gave Antonio the special pillow early, promising him this tiger was friendly and would chase away his nightmares. Antonio snuggled with Mirabel that night in the same bed, hugging his new gift close to his chest.
When he fell back asleep, he knew that Mirabel had kept her word - and that his real tiger friend would always keep him safe from nightmares.
(yeah this one got a bit sad ;-; don't worry the next next one will be a little happier)

the new encanto comics reminded me of something that has absolutely been pointed out before, but it’s still so neat how the youngest of all sibling lines seem to look like their respective parent the most?
i mean, obviously because family and everyone has resemblances to each other in some way
but yeah, looking at them, mirabel resembles julieta, antonio resembles felix, and bruno resembles pedro
not sure if i’m making sense or if i’m just looking too much into it, but still, it’s interesting
pedro and bruno:

"Can I ask you something?" Carmen says hesitantly. "Sure." Mirabel shrugs. "Why do you keep going over there?" Carmen gestures her head in the direction of Casita, but her eyes stay fixed at the table cloth. "I mean, you obviously don't enjoy it…" Instead of responding right away, Mirabel focuses on her work, beading the dozenth necklace, following the pattern that came before. Blue, light blue, green glass, solid green, small charm, beads, big charm. Repeat. She turns it over in her head. There are a lot of things she could say, some not so nice, but all true. She's asked herself that question a lot, and the answers are as complicated as they are simple. She does and also doesn't know why she keeps trying with them. But that's not for Carmen's ears, so she tells her…not The Truth, but not A Lie either; "It's my mom, really. It's like she expects some….miracle. Like we'll have the perfect dinner, and everything will be amazing, and I'll wanna move back in. But I don't. And I don't wanna make her sad cuz I know she's trying, but like…" Mirabel trails off as she looks around at her home, her home, with enough space for her stuff. Yeah, it's quieter than she'd like, and she has to get used to cooking for herself, but it's hers. She does what she wants, when she wants and she doesn't have to justify it to anyone. Mirabel hadn't realized how tense she was until she got out of there. "I don't live there anymore." Mirabel states.
I have this thing where I'll make an AU out of a single scenario I really want to write and once I start building around it, I find other things that I like, and I'll split it into something else, and I'll do it again and again and again until I have like 5 different WIPs with the same premise but they can't exist in the same universe.
So this excerpt from The Jewel in My Eye, Shop of The Lost, Dressmaker!Mirabel and like 3 other WIPs I've never shared on here are all progenies of the same idea; Mirabel moving out of Casita and discovering who she is outside of her family's influence.
This was originally just for Shop of The Lost, it was going to be a biiig fic but there was too much going on and I liked the ideas too much to throw them away, so they became their own au.
Following Antonio's ceremony, Mirabel is desperate for an apprenticeship, she's been asking since she was 12 (she's 17 now) and all the other kids at school started to get them. Everytime she brings it up it turns into a fight, and she can’t get one on her own, no one's excited to get on Doña Alma's bad side. Alma doesn't want the Madrigals accepting money or doing trade, they were given this Miracle to share with others and she's firm on that. Madrigals don't do Trade.
Now Francisco Peréz was a jewler, one of the more successful ones in the Encanto, as they have lots of business outside. He's retired now, and his children manage the business. He's too old to be afraid of Alma, and Mirabel's a nice girl, so he decides to teach her as he's got a small set-up in his home, and when people ask, he tells them Mirabel's "helping around the house". She learns engraving, and goldsmithing and what not, but it's only a matter of time until she's found out.
Alma is furious that Mirabel went behind her back to do this and even more so when Mirabel refuses to quit.
It's not fair that she’s always pushed to the side. It's not fair that she can't even work. And it's not fair that just because she hid it, she "doesn't have a foot to stand on". The family's all, well Mirabel you did technically lie and disobey and you know the rules blah blah blah. She talks to Francisco and he's like, well since the cats out of the bag you can just work at the shop now, my son needs some help anyway.
Which is great news! But Mirabel isn’t an adult yet, so she has to wait. During those months of waiting, her relationship with the family sours (more than it already has), she's kept on a tight leash and can't step a toe out of line. She becomes dissolusioned with the family, and the night of her 18th birthday she leaves the house and starts working at the Peréz's jewelry studio.
And the first thing they do is ship her out town the next morning to learn how they get supplies. Alma tells the Peréz's to fire Mirabel and they're like; oh, uh.....No. The Peréz's are a bit...proud, being on of the richest families in town and Abuelo Francisco said she's working here, so she's working here.
Mirabel is very happy learning all these new things and making her own jewelry and its hard that her family is trying their best to punish her for it. She becomes very distant and throws herself into her work, as the years go by she gets more responsibilities until she spends half her time outside the Encanto, collecting supplies and selling merchandise. Julieta has to practically beg her to visit.
@morimementa sorry this took forever, life has been....interesting since I started this draft. I hope you like it 🙂

I’m bored so here’s user jacarandaaaas hot takes rapid fire round
- I don’t think camilo is an asshole who’s heartless and I hate content that portrays him as such
- pepa is not a bad parent because of one 5 second scene where camilo comforts her
- julietas trauma is undermined a lot of the time and compared to her daughters
- comparing the characters trauma is weird
- i don’t think isabela is crazy violent post movie and would hate to be seen that way
- luisa is an introvert
- I don’t like the take that bruno avoided the kids pre movie I actually think he would spend more time with them than the adults
- I hate parentified mirabel. she’s 15 let her have fun she does not need to babysit people who are all older than her
- on another note yall undermine mirabel too much just because she has trauma but so does every other character. mirabel is not the only one who is traumatized and her trauma doesn’t make her any less capable than anyone else.
- isabela is smarter than she’s given credit for
- luisa is the most feminine out of the sisters but y’all discredit that because she has muscles even tho the movie has an entire song about how she wants to be seen as more than that.
- dolores can be fun
- camilo is watered down to being just “crazy” but y’all ignore how caring and considerate he is too just cause he’s a teenage boy
- let mirabel say fuck
- this one isn’t even a hot take anymore but none of the characters are perfect and that includes Bruno
- talking about bruno I hate when he’s shown to be completely incompetent at everything
- same with mirabel
- I think it takes a lot of time for isabela to fully embrace imperfection as we saw after wecid how fast she reverted back
- alma is not evil or villainous at all but people have a right to be upset at how she acted (the movie makes this a point she does say mean things) her actions are understandable not inexcusable
- going from one toxic dynamic to a different toxic dynamic doesn’t make it any less toxic (codependency)
- isabela and mirabels relationship is mutually strained
- luisa wasn’t a good sister just because she ignored mirabel instead of belittling her
- mirabel was just as ignorant as everyone else and I’m tired of y’all acting like she knew the whole time when she didn’t
- pepa never hated bruno and y’all didn’t understand wdtab
- LET MIRABEL BE FUN AND SILLY
- antonio wouldn’t abandon mirabel for his animals he already loved animals premovie anyways
- isabela is a huge softie and I hate how overlooked that aspect of her is
- luisa never hated isabela
- dolores never intended on ruining isabelas proposal she just heard a prophecy that everyone’s lives were gonna be ruined and was terrified
- mirabel has friends
- luisa is a grown woman who is capable of doing things for herself
- I think camilo was the most distant when bruno came back but after a while they became really close
- mirabel is brunos fav i mean come on she literally saved his life
- i don’t think pedro is given enough respect
uh yeah that’s all I have for now lmao

ENJOYYYYYY
LE GE IT
-----
Mirabel fiddled with her dress, the raised threading of the embroidery familiar on her fingers. She watched as her family bustled about the village square, helping out for the upcoming festival.
She wanted to help.
And she had tried. Honestly she had. But she just got overtaken by someone else or was shooed away. Claims that her help wasn't needed were said, but she knew the truth: her help wasn't wanted. She knew better. But she desperately wanted to help--wanted to prove that yes, she was a Madrigal, and yes she could be just as helpful, gift or not.
The 13-year-old scanned the crowd. Her eyes landed on her abuela. She was speaking with a few people from the festival committee. They always took care of the preparations, though gratefully took any help from anyone, especially the Madrigals.
Expect Mirabel.
Her eyebrows furrowed, her lip jutting out in a pout. She watched them speak for a moment longer before Isabela came over. She watched as they all fawned over her older sister. Their relationship had become...strained, over the years. She wish it wasn't like that. She didn't want it to be like that. But she had given up a long time ago on trying to fix it.
Maybe another day.
For now she was focused on her abuela. She steeled herself, taking a deep breath before marching over to her grandmother. It was not lost on her the irritated look on her sisters face, nor how her abuela shooed the girl away. But Mirabel just stood, standing her ground. She had to do this.
"Mirabel!" Alma said, clapping her hands together, though her voice was a bit strained. Forced almost. "Is something wrong? Did you finish the task I gave you?"
Mirabel nodded, breathing deeply. "S-Sí, I did. But...I was wondering if I could do something...else?"
Alma blinked. She seemed confused, her eyes flickered before she nodded. "Oh, yes, yes! There's always something you could do," the words left her mouth, but to Mirabel they felt empty. She watched as her abuela glanced around, her eye grazing over the other family members. "Em...Ah, you could help clean up! There's certainly always something to help clean up before decorations start."
Mirabel gave a forced smile, the one she always gave before reluctantly accepting a mundane and, frankly, insignificant task.
But not this time.
She girl laughed nervously, readjusting her glasses. "Well...I was hoping I could do something more, you know, important?"
Alma blinked again, her smile beginning to fade. It began to look like a grimace, and she glanced to the side nervously. "But it is important? Besides, what could you do to help?"
The words came off rather patronizing. Mirabel swallowed thickly, ignoring the tone in her abuela's words. She knew that it was, at least it seemed like, a genuine question. And the poor girl had heard it countless times before. It was almost as if Alma couldn't find something for her to do.
"Well that's easy! I could help mamá cook, or help set up with Luisa, or help Camilo with welcoming everyone!" Mirabel listed off. It was obvious, yet Alma seemed to give another confused look.
"But...that's their chore," Alma placed a hand on Mirabel's shoulder, and the girl felt her frustration building. "Mirabel, you should just let them work. Maybe you should...look after Antonio for a while. You know, just...out of the way?"
Mirabel's face twisted into a frown. Her disappointment and sadness must hae been evident, because Alma's eyes flickered again, her eyebrows twitching. Mirabel backed away, pushing Alma's hand away.
"Why?" Mirabel asked, and she did her best to hold back tears.
Alma frowned. "What?"
"Why?" Mirabel asked again. Her hands gripped her skirts. Her hands were sweaty, but she ignored it. "Why can't I do something important? Did I do something wrong? Did I mess up? I...I just don't understand."
Alma. "What do you mean? You don't have a gift. A-And I just don't..."
"Don't what, Abuela? Don't think I can help?" Mirabel asked. For once, Alma was speechless. Mirabel tears were flowing freely now. They didnt notice the few family members nearby staring at them, mostly in confusion. Except Dolores of course. Both Julieta and Agustín were about two seconds away from dropping everything and rushing over.
"Mirabel, I-"
"You think I'm useless too," Mirabel mumbled, almost bitterly. She looked up at Alma with those wide eyes. Those sad, big, brown eyes that she hadn't seen, hadn't truly seen, since her 5th birthday. "Don't you?"
Alma wasn't sure what happened. Some barrier in her mind came crashing down, or maybe some pieces started falling into place. She blinked rapidly, not really from tears but from realization. She stared at Mirabel, her eyes darting between both of her eyes, the tears on her face, and the utter defeat that was in her voie.
It was almost like Alma was seeing Mirabel for the first time since that day. Like whatever was blocking her eyes finally fell away.
"Mirabel?" Alma asked, catching Mirabel's attention. The girl stared, confused, but the tears still ran. Alma suddenly grabbed her hands, holding them close. She hadn't done that in years. "Mirabel you-you aren't...you aren't useless. Why in the Heavens would you think that?"
Mirabel looked down at her hands before looking around. "You never let me help. You always tell me to stay out of the way," she said, her voice hitching every few words.
Alma's eyes widened. It confused Mirabel. It was like she was hearing this stuff for the first time, like this was entirely new information to her. She began to frantically look around, ignoring the looks of the other family members and passerbys. "Surely there's something you can do," she looked around, her eyes landing on Camilo, who was playing with the kids who had began to come to the town center for the festival.
"Camilo! You can help Camilo! Kids love you, right?" Alma said, and her face....her face was one of a hopeful worry. Like she was trying to cheer her up by giving her a task one of the other family members had. But not out of pity. Not this time.
Mirabel blinked in shock, her tears momentarily stopping. "R-Really?"
"¡Sí, sí!" Alma exclaimed, ushering Mirabel towards her cousin. Camilo looked up, hiding the arepa he had snatched when he shifted into one of the kids. He swallowed thickly before waving as they came over.
"But I thought you wanted me to-"
Alma didnt even let her finish. She knew what she was going to say. "Nonsense! You can help Camilo, and once all the townsfolk are here you can..." Alma looked around, once again almost frantic to find her another task. "You can help Isabela and Dolores! I'm sure there's some decorations you can help with. You have that...em...artistic touch."
Mirabel looked at Camilo, who was waving her over excitedly. She looked back at Alma, quickly rubbing her tears away and readjusting her glasses. "O-Ok! I'll do my best!"
With that, Mirabel rushed over to Camilo. The two hugged, tightly, in a way Alma hadn't seen since they were younger. Actually, come to think of it, she had seen them together less and less in the past years.
Had she done that?
Alma blinked rapidly again, her eyes glazing over for a brief moment. She shook her head, glancing at the two before nodding in approval. Now everyone had something to do. She walked off, going to find the festival committee once more.
But in the back of her mind, another wall began to crunble, and with it, a foggy haze began to disperse.

...He raised his eyebrows in surprise at that. Favorite people? Was he included on that list? Julieta just smiled and turned back to the dishes. It took Bruno a moment, but he also slowly resumed his duties, finding he couldn't put away the little smile on his own face that had arrived at the thought that he might be someone's favorite.
I drew from my fic La Traes again for @encantober-official Day 2 - siblings. This scene is a little exchange that happens between the triplets--the OG siblings. You can find the whole thing below the cut.
“You need to get out of the house, hermanito,” Julieta had said to him gently one evening after dinner as they washed dishes together. “It’s…been a while, sí?”
“Eso se queda corto,” Pepa had mumbled as she dumped some more dishes into the soapy water, earning a glare from both of her siblings. [ That's an understatement.] She widened her eyes at them as if to say What? Am I wrong?
“I’m just saying ,” Julieta continued, pointedly moving past Pepa’s comment, “that it might do you some good, to have a little more change of scenery.”
“I-I think I’m doing just fine,” he replied a bit defensively. And he did. He went for walks with Dolores around the perimeter of Casita, down to the river where it ran past the southwest edge of the grassy lawn. Sometimes he’d wander out back behind the house, napping in the afternoon sun before it disappeared behind the mountainous wall that guarded the back of their home. Compared to the previous ten years, he was a veritable expeditionist now.
“Of course you are,” Pepa said, putting an arm around his shoulders. He hunched them in response, glancing at her suspiciously.
“Y-yeah?”
“Yeah! You’ve made it to the edge of the grass! That’s like, what, un kilómetro cuadrado, yeah? A completely normal amount of space for a person to exist in.”
[One square kilometer.] Bruno’s frown deepened. “You’re mocking me.”
Pepa winked at him.
“A-alright, alright,” he said, waving his hands in the air beside his head in surrender. “I’ll, uh, I'll go to the banana fields tomorrow. As long as it’s not a harvest day,” he added, pointing a finger at Julieta, who rolled her eyes good-naturedly at him. “Or an irrigation day. Or you know…a-a day with other, um, other people there.”
The busyness of rebuilding Casita last year had given him enough social interaction outside his immediate family to last him quite a while…a very long while. Thankfully, he’d been able to largely lose himself in the organized chaos of it all, and Mirabel had been particularly helpful, working as a liaison between him and anyone he’d had to interact with, smoothing the awkwardness away with her easy conversation and joyful presence. And he had managed to largely ignore the curious stares that came from, well, from pretty much everyone until the novelty of his return had worn off. Well…at least he had pretended to ignore them.
“I don’t want to pressure you, arenoso,” Julieta said gently, putting a slightly soapy hand on his shoulder. “I just don’t want…”
…don’t want you to get lost again. She’d let her sentence trail off, but the unspoken ending hung awkwardly in the air anyway. They’d both turned back to their dishes, with Pepa standing stiffly beside them, hugging a freshly dried plate to her stomach. The cloud above her head darkened just a little. Bruno winced down at the soapy water as the silence surrounding them grew painful.
“H-hey, maybe you can spend the day with Antonio tomorrow?" Pepa offered nervously, popping the tension like a soap bubble. "He needs a…a break …from routine, too."
Bruno and Julieta looked at their sister with matching frowns, both narrowing their eyebrows in concern. It would have been comical or even sweet to see the same expression mirrored between her two siblings again…if she didn’t feel the weight of the very same concern pulling down the corners of her own mouth.
Antonio had been struggling to find a place for himself in the Madrigal visits to town. Before his gift, he might have shyly clung to Mirabel’s skirts or played in the dirt while Pepa rained on the fields, never quite brave enough to venture out to play with the other children on his own, refusing to speak to the adults that smiled down at him. Pepa worried about his shyness.
But now a different problem had presented itself. Antonio was now more than happy to engage with anyone and everyone, possessing a newfound courage with his animal friends by his side, but his animal friends were also decidedly wild, and even Antonio could not control every move they made. Just last week, some monkeys that had trailed him into the town had wandered away and found some storage crates of fruit, working together to drop them from the roof of a nearby house until the crates smashed open and spilled out a feast that was then fit only for them. The owner of the crates had not been happy.
Most of the jungle animals had largely maintained a healthy, fearful distance from the bustling, busy streets of the Encanto for the fifty years it had occupied the valley, but Antonio’s warmth and friendship seemed to have blurred that boundary, and Abuela was struggling to find a balance between loving encouragement and civic order. And when Abuela struggled with something, all the Madrigals struggled with her, in one way or another.
“...Mamá suggested that maybe Antonio might spend some time in the forest paths, playing with his gift,” Pepa explained, putting away the plate so she could pull at her braid. A knowing glance between all three siblings conveyed the underlying meaning of the word play—learn to get it under control. “Félix was going to take him, but you two get along so well, Bruno. Maybe you could spend some time with him, and you both could enjoy the fresh air. You know. Bonding?”
Bruno blew out an exaggerated breath, his cheeks puffing and his shoulders dropping dramatically. He pulled his mouth to the side and looked at Pepa with an expression of reluctant concession. How could he say no to a whole day with his sobrino? He loved the kid. And the very fact that Abuela had been the one to suggest the break from town…well. He knew what that felt like. No matter how nicely she put it, how lovingly she intended it, he knew it would feel like a punishment to Antonio. That thought…well that thought broke his heart a little.
“...F-fine,” he mustered in response. “We’ll go for a walk in the–- ” he swallowed dryly“ –- i-in the forest.”
A bit of sunlight broke through from behind the cloud above Pepa’s head, and Bruno couldn’t help but flash a small, crooked smile up at it. She pulled him sideways by his collar and planted a kiss on his cheek, which he winced at but accepted gratefully. Julieta nudged him with her hip.
“There you go! That will be fun,” she said happily, clearly convinced this was a fantastic solution for all parties. Bruno was not so sure. “Take Mirabel with you, too, if you want. You know she’d love to join her two favorite people for the day.”
Bruno had raised his eyebrows in surprise at that. Favorite people? Was he included in that list? Julieta had just smiled and turned back to the dishes. It had taken Bruno a moment, but he also slowly resumed his duties, finding he couldn’t put away the little smile on his own face that had arrived at the thought that he might be someone’s favorite.
So here he was now, sharing a picnic blanket with a sloth and a capybara—among other crawling, flittering things—nursing a bruised ego after having been tackled by a six year old on a jaguar, all because he was a pushover who couldn’t say no to time with his sobrinos.
Caray. The things I get myself into…
--La Traes, Chapter 1
