Sayaka Maizono: Legally Blonde. please don’t ask me how many of these i’ve seen because it’s a shamefully small number but the music slaps and I can see her singing the songs from this one.

Y’all Ready for My Piping Hot Take on MASSEDUCTION?

@fall-forevermore this is for you! 

First off, I was hella fortunate enough to be able to go to the Red Bull show on the Paramount Lot in LA last weekend where she performed the entire album. I was front and center and surrounded by friends after a 7 hour wait in line, it was magical, truly. Annie was right in front of me and I *totally swear* she looked into my eyes during a stirring rendition of “Strange Mercy”. I’d never been so close to Annie before and I. was. thrilled. That being said...

Masseduction is bad. SO bad. Holy shit Annie, what were you THINKING????? 

Listen, I’m all for Annie exploring her sound and the aesthetics behind this album are cool, but this isn’t her. This is Jackofftonoff taking her music and making it sound like every mediocre Bleachers album ever (to be fair, “I Wanna Get Better” goes OFF). Here are my selected qualms: 

1. Annie is one of the greatest guitar players ever but you’d never know it from this album, you might think she’s the greatest, I dunno, producer ever? Related: while I loved the show, I missed the days of her band and Toko (like the Hollywood Bowl show in 2015 holy shit, I. was. blessed.) 

2. We were promised a sound similar to the “Krokodil/Grot” 7″ and this is. not it. 

3. The lyrics are meh, she’s a better songwriter than this, honestly! 

4. Yeah yeah we get it LA is vapid and dating a supermodel is so hard 

5. I feel like overall she’s selling out, ya know, doing VIP tickets at her shows, ditching her guitar, it’s WEIRD! 

THAT BEING SAID! 

I still enjoyed Masseduction to some extent, truly! Here are so non-qualms I have with it: 

1. It’s a solid pop album, not like Emotion levels but it’s... decent! It’s harmless fun to listen to on the last Expo Line at 1AM when you’re gliding down Expo Boulevard with LA surrounding you! (I KNOW that’s weirdly specific) 

2. “Pills” is a good solid bop if you ignore the songwriting

3. I’m not gonna lie, this album is sexy as hell and one day I wanna bang to it, cuz I won’t be so focused on it’s faults, obvi. 

4. Her aesthetic this album is pretty cool. 

5. Jenny Lewis is on it? I still haven’t found her but she sings on it!
