All Creatures Great and Small: Samuel West on his Yorkshire heritage, meeting his fellow cast members and finding Siegfried
All Creatures Great and Small actor Samuel West talks to Stephanie Smith about his Yorkshire heritage, first meeting his fellow cast members – and finding Siegfried Farnon.
paywalled article - full article copied below
If there is a magic formula for making a hit TV drama series in the 21st century, All Creatures Great and Small has bottled and then gift-wrapped it. Values are key and, says Samuel West, the upcoming Christmas Special spreads a much-needed message of decency and kindness.
“It’s about people coming together in difficulty, to support each other, at a time when so many terrible things are happening in the world,” he says. “It’s got absent friends, people who are missing, people who won’t ever come back, just like life.”
Samuel plays Siegfried Farnon, the Yorkshire Dales vet with a short fuse and a huge heart. It is a role that he has more than made his own, even for those who remember Robert Hardy in the original BBC series that ran from 1978 to 1990.

The “new” Channel 5 adaptation launched amid a pandemic-crippled UK back in September 2020, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the publication of If Only They Could Talk, the first of the James Herriot bestsellers penned by Thirsk vet James Alfred “Alf” Wight. There have now been four TV series made (and we are talking to mark the release of a DVD box set of them).
All Creatures has been a great success for Channel 5, with viewing figures for the fourth season peaking at 3.7million. Samuel saw the show’s potential from the off. “I was already thinking about Channel 5 as a good place, because they had given up Big Brother and so they had to fill about 250 hours a year of schedule, and they started filling it with drama, which was delightful.”
When approached to play Siegfried, he was already a respected actor, with a rich and varied career mingling theatre, TV and film, radio and voiceover work. Nominated in 1993 for a BAFTA for Howards End, his film credits also include Jane Eyre, Van Helsing and Notting Hill, while his TV work includes the BBC’s Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell (filmed in York in 2015), Waking the Dead, Any Human Heart, Slow Horses, The Crown, Small Axe and four series of Mr Selfridge. He was artistic director of Sheffield Theatres from 2005 to 2007.
He learned that Golden Globe and BAFTA award-winning production company Playground was making the new All Creatures. “I had just finished watching Playground’s Wolf Hall, which I had adored, and that period stuff is hard to get right, and expensive to do well,” he says.
The treatment he was sent included a back story about Siegfried, written by lead writer, Ben Vanstone. “It was beautiful,” says Samuel. “Almost sort of Chekhovian in its detail and the cables that ran through the man. They had set a lot of things in this past that had made him layered, and I realised, just from thinking about the man, and looking at the books and remembering Robert Hardy’s performance in the 1970s, that he was going to need a lot of playing. It was going to need vocal and physical size. But I thought, if I am on the right track and I know where I am coming from, I think I’m quite good casting.”
He met Nicholas Ralph (James Herriot), Rachel Shenton (Helen) and Callum Woodhouse (Tristan) on the train from Leeds to Skipton for a couple of days’ rehearsal. Samuel says: “At the end of the journey, I thought, what lovely people, and at the end of the rehearsal, I thought, this ensemble really works, and then they cast Anna Madeley and she was the icing on the cake that was already rising.”
Siegfried is often spotted reading The Yorkshire Post. “Quite right, too,” says Samuel. “ I also love the paper. I think your editorials are sometimes some of the most sensible things I read all week.”
In this series, Siegfried is a widower, a detail not in the Herriot novels but echoing the life of the real man who inspired the character, Donald Sinclair, whose first wife, Evelyn, died of tuberculosis. He was married to his second wife for 53 years. She was called Audrey, which just happens to be the lesser heard name of Anna Madeley’s character, Mrs Hall.
Samuel discovered more about Donald Sinclair when he teamed up with real-life vet Peter Wright while making the programme All Creatures Great and Small Meets The Yorkshire Vet, which airs on Channel 5 just before the All Creatures Christmas Special on December 21. He also visited The World of James Herriot with Alf Wight’s children, Jim Wight and Rosie Page, and has incorporated into Siegfried’s portrayal some of the details they passed on. “My father says, do as much research as you can because, even if only 10 per cent is useful, the more you do, the bigger the 10 per cent is. Except he says I say that.”
Samuel’s father, actor Timothy West, is Bradford-born. Family legend has it that Timothy’s father (actor Lockwood West, known as Harry) was on tour there at the time. “It's not true,” says Samuel. What actually happened was, in pre-NHS days, he and his wife, Olive, also an actor, had been told of an inexpensive maternity home up in Yorkshire. Samuel says: “They were playing in Eastbourne at the time. She went by train to Bradford, had the baby, and Harry continued to do eight shows a week.”
Samuel - who has two daughters, aged nine and six, with his partner, the playwright Laura Wade - plans to save the All Creatures Christmas special to watch with his father and mother, fellow actor Prunella Scales. “My father, in particular, is quite cross that he’s not in it, but he can’t be in everything,” he says. “And we would have to be related - we look increasingly like each other.”
The All Creatures Great and Christmas 2023 episode will be broadcast on December 21, at 9pm in the UK on Channel 5 and My5.

Paperhouse is a 1988 British dark fantasy film directed by Bernard Rose. It was based on the 1958 novel Marianne Dreams by Catherine Storr. The film stars Ben Cross, Glenne Headly and Gemma Jones. The original novel was the basis of a six-episode British TV series for children in the early 1970s which was titled Escape Into Night.
While suffering from glandular fever, 11-year-old Anna Madden draws a house. When she falls asleep, she has disturbing dreams in which she finds herself inside the house she has drawn. After she draws a face at the window, in her next dream she finds Marc, a boy who suffers with muscular dystrophy, living in the house. She learns from her doctor that Marc is a real person.
Anna sketches her father into the drawing so that he can help carry Marc away, but she inadvertently gives him an angry expression which she then crosses out, and the father (who has been away a lot and has a drinking problem, putting a strain on his marriage) appears in the dream as a furious, blinded ogre. Anna and Marc defeat the monster and shortly afterward Anna recovers, although the doctor reveals that Marc's condition is deteriorating.
Anna's father returns home and both parents seem determined to get over their marital difficulties. The family goes on holiday by the sea, where Anna finds an epilogue to her dream.
Charlotte Burke - Anna Madden, Ben Cross - Dad, Glenne Headly - Kate Madden, Elliott Spiers - Marc, Gemma Jones - Dr. Sarah Nichols, Jane Bertish - Miss Vanstone, Samantha Cahill - Sharon, Sarah Newbold - Karen.
Marianne Dreams is a children's fantasy novel by Catherine Storr. It was illustrated with drawings by Marjorie-Ann Watts and published by Faber and Faber in 1958. The first paperback edition, from Puffin Books in 1964, is catalogued by the Library of Congress as revised.
Marianne is a young girl who is bedridden with a long-term illness. She draws a picture to fill her time and finds that she spends her dreams within the picture she has drawn. As time goes by, she becomes sicker, and starts to spend more and more time trapped within her fantasy world, and her attempts to make things better by adding to and crossing out things in the drawing make things progressively worse. Her only companion in her dreamworld is a boy called Mark, who is also a long-term invalid in the real world.

A Gentleman in Moscow
A Gentleman in Moscow has landed. It's not about who you are. It's about the people you meet. A Russian aristocrat is spared from death and placed on house arrest while the Bolshevik Revolution plays out before him.
Set in post-Revolutionary Russia, 🪆 Count Alexander Rostov (Ewan McGregor) is stripped of his title and sentenced to spend the rest of his life in the Metropol Hotel. Imprisoned at the property, the Count develops a friendship with a young girl, Nina (Alexa Goodall), but when a friend, Mishka (Fehinti Balogun), arrives at the hotel, the Count is forced to face his past, while trying not to sink into despair with the future.
Ewan McGregor as Count Alexander Rostov is in the screen adaptation of the author Amor Towles' bestselling novel. The limited series take on Amor Towles' 2016 novel tiptoes along an allegorical line, without toppling over into either outright whimsy or voyeuristic gawking at the flawed idealism and generational traumas of the Bolshevik Revolution.

I had a feeling I was going to be updating this for Man of Medan....
But I didn’t think I was going to need to update this much. Holy shit, guys, so many familiar faces!! Even had to add a whole other character because I recognised Vanstone right away and I wasn’t expecting his face to return.
I wasn’t sold on Fliss also being Victoria/Jody in the demos, but in the full game, I’m sticking with the comparison. The only one I’m still on the fence about is Danny. Because even Victor seems a bit different from Karl, but they’re all similar enough to make me think they’re at least based on the same model.
If I missed Gordon/Calvary or Anna/Daniella in Man of Medan, please let me know! ♥ I love doing these and I want them to be as accurate as I can guess-wise.

Matthew Lewis Joins Channel 5 Adaptation of ‘All Creatures Great and Small’
Matthew Lewis is joining Nicholas Ralph, Anna Madeley, Samuel West, Rachel Shenton and Diana Rigg in Channel 5 TV adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small.
All Creatures Great and Small is based by the books written by James Alfred Wight under the pen name, James Herriot. His stories are based on his life and adventures working as a veterinarian in Yorkshire Dales in the 1930s.
The stories were first adapted into a popular 90-episode TV series which ran on BBC One between 1978 and 1990.
“When it originally aired on public broadcasting, All Creatures Great and Small captured the hearts of millions of television viewers. We promise that the new series will have all the wit, warmth, and quirky charm of the original – and of course, lots of irresistible animals,” says Rebecca Eaton, Executive Producer of Masterpiece.
The new adaptation will be a six-part series (including a Christmas special) by production company Playground Entertaiment. It is produced by Richard Burrell (New Tricks, Silent Witness), with Ben Vanstone (The Last Kingdom) as lead writer and Executive Producer, as well as Brian Percival (Downton Abbey) as lead director. Masterpiece on PBS will co-produce and All3Media is the international distributor.
Nicholas Ralph is leading the series as James Herriot, Rachel Shenton plays Helen Alderson, and Matthew will be playing a rich landlord named Hugh Hulton, who will also be a rival to James for Helen’s affections . All Creatures Great and Small is set to premiere sometime this year in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the original publication of the books.

The double Diamond ( Design Council)
What is the Double Diamond?
The Double Diamond is a visual representation of the design and innovation process. It is a simple way to describe the steps taken in any design and innovation project , irrespective of methods and tools used.
Part of Design Councils reason for creating the double diamond was because models of design process were not widely shared so they created it to address the lack of visibility.
The double diamond is today used and referenced world wide.
Richard Eisermann inherited a multi-disciplinary design and innovation team from his predecessor Clive Grinyer. The team included Anna White, Chris Vanstone, Gill Wildman, Jennie Winhall and Jonathan Ball.
Jonathon Ball who is an independent strategist on the Design and innovation team recalls how everything got started. He stated “ As Richard got his feet under the table, he was excited to see the new work at Design Council and the breadth of challenges that were being addressed. He realised that Design Council talked about process –  the design process – but wasn't explicit about how this process was defined.”
Richard Believed that design council needed a way that was consistent in telling a process story. At a team meeting Richard expressed his curiosity as to how the design council might define design process and the methods that it could use at different stages of the process. Richard then challenged the rest of the team to answer that question.
The ambitious of the team was to create something that could be applied in any field , to create a model that design council could use with any one of their clients.
Richard recalled “Dave Duncanson, an engineer at IDEO, talked to me about the product development process as being like the classic diamond-shaped kite, with a tail composed of progressively smaller diamonds.  So the double diamond shape was definitely already present at IDEO in the late 90s, although it may not have been called such.”
Richard’s next encounter with this diamond shape was at Whirlpool. “We did an extensive innovation programme with business guru Gary Hamel. Gary used the diamond as a way of framing innovation. He even called it the Double Diamond. But the names of the four steps were different.”
“The team put in the work trying to define design, process, methods, etc. What we did with the Double Diamond was codify it, rename the steps and popularise it. It was important work, but we were certainly standing on the shoulders of giants”
The team came up with a simplified way to describe any design and innovation process. It is based on four distinct phases that the team names discover , define , develop and deliver.
Discover - The process starts by questioning the challenge and quickly leads to research to identify user needs.
Define - The second phase is to make sense of the findings, understanding how user needs and the problem align. The result is to create a design brief which clearly defines the challenge based on these insights.
Develop - The third phase concentrates on developing, testing and refining multiple potential solutions.
Deliver - The final phase involves selecting a single solution that works and preparing it for launch.
“As a model for the design process, I thought it was a neat representation, but I have to say that at the time, apart from presenting it in an almost academic way, I couldn't get my head around using it in practice. I found I had to rehearse the way I told the Double Diamond story. Once I was comfortable with it, it became the starting point for any design-orientated conversation, for positioning design in a broader context, discussing a specific design project, or as the process itself.”
Jonathan Bell
The Double Diamond Today.
The double diamond still remains at he heart of design councils work.

PBS: All Creatures Great and Small Season 4 New and Returning Cast
Boston, MA; June 27, 2023: MASTERPIECE on PBS, Channel 5, and BAFTA and Golden Globe®-winning production company Playground (Howards End, Wolf Hall) today announce the casting of the much-loved drama All Creatures Great and Small as it gears up for its fourth season.
Based on the cherished collection of stories by best-selling author James Herriot, the critically acclaimed adaptation returns to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales for a fourth season of timeless and heart-warming stories, picking up in 1940 as Churchill takes office and Europe is under serious threat. The seven new episodes (including a Christmas Special) will air on MASTERPIECE on PBS in early 2024 and Channel 5 this autumn with All3Media International as the global partner.
MASTERPIECE Executive Producer Susanne Simpson adds, “I can’t wait for our MASTERPIECE audience to see this new season of All Creatures Great and Small. It continues to be full of the warmth and humor that has made it one of our most successful series ever.” MASTERPIECE is presented on PBS by GBH Boston.
Sir Colin Callender CBE, Executive Producer and CEO of Playground said: “We are thrilled to be back in the glorious Yorkshire Dales for a fourth season of family, community and, of course, animal hijinks. Our wonderful cast and crew are all delighted to be returning to adapt more of James Herriot’s joyful and life-affirming stories.”
Season 4 sees Nicholas Ralph reprise his role as young country vet James Herriot, now happily married to Helen Herriot, played by Rachel Shenton (White Gold, For Her Sins). Samuel West (Slow Horses, Small Axe) returns as James’ capricious and erratic mentor Siegfried Farnon while Anna Madeley (Time, Patrick Melrose) continues as Mrs. Hall, matriarch of Skeldale House. Patricia Hodge (Miranda, A Very English Scandal) also reprises her role as the wonderfully eccentric Mrs. Pumphrey, and Derek as her adored and pampered Pekingese Tricki.
With Tristan away serving in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, Siegfried and James bring in some extra hands to help around the practice. Neve McIntosh (Shetland) joins the cast as highly efficient bookkeeper Miss Harbottle, alongside James Anthony-Rose (Slow Horses, Pennyworth) as studious undergraduate vet student Richard Carmody who arrives at Skeldale as part of his placement under the guidance of James.
A colorful ensemble of farmers, animals and townsfolk living in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1940s will also star, including Tony Pitts and Imogen Clawson as Helen’s father and sister, Richard and Jenny Alderson, Paul Copley as Ned Clough, Cleo Sylvestre MBE as Anne Chapman, James Bolam MBE as Mr. Dakin and Will Thorp as Gerald Hammond and Sam Retford as FO Woodham.
Louise Pedersen, CEO of All3Media International, commented: “Over three seasons All Creatures Great and Small has offered heartwarming, escapist viewing that has connected with audiences and become a firm fan favorite all around the world, and as Playground’s wonderful series enters its fourth season I am delighted to continue to build the brand globally.”
Returning for Season 4 is Executive Producer Ben Vanstone (A Gentleman in Moscow, The Last Kingdom) who will write the Christmas special. Writer Jamie Crichton (Three Pines, Grantchester) also returns, this time as lead writer and Executive Producer. Joining them for season four are writers Maxine Alderton (Emmerdale Farm, Doctor Who) and Helen Raynor (A Discovery of Witches, Call the Midwife).

Never out of print, the books have sold 60 million copies internationally becoming a global cultural phenomenon with devoted fans around the world. c'était très émouvant de le faire chanter et jouer de la guitare

Musical Muskoka with @OMEAOntario #OMEAInterlude2017
My relationship with the Ontario Music Educators Association (OMEA) goes back many years now and I’m so glad that they invited me back for this year’s conference – Interlude 2017 – at the Deerhurst Resort, not only because I got to see some of the organizers of past events and so many teachers whose schools I’ve visited over the years – but because it’s such a great reminder of how important music education is in school and in life; and to be around people who are dedicated to that idea is very inspiring. And in addition to all the familiar faces, it was also great to meet so many new educators who were discovering Six String Nation for the first time. I’m hopeful that we’ll have a chance to visit some more schools around Ontario as a result – and especially ones that have people on staff who can make sure the music students at their schools get a chance to really step up and shine during the presentation.
Speaking of stepping up and shining, there was no doubt a wealth of guitar talent among the attendees who would have been great in the “performance pocket” part of the presentation – and our pal Hawksley Workman had graced the stage the previous night – but, rightly, organizer Laura Lee Matthie wanted to focus on a student player for this opportunity and really hammer home the value of the work that everyone in attendance is doing. So she managed to recruit a 16-year old grade 12 student from nearby Huntsville High School named Jack Gaughan. Remember that name. Jack plays guitar and bass in the Senior Concert Band, Senior Stage Band and the R&B ensemble Song Project at school and is currently working with Oscar Peterson Quartet alumnus Lorne Lofsky as he prepares to audition for post-secondary jazz studies. He was cool as a cucumber and yet his fingers were like lightning!
Thanks to Laura Lee and her conference co-chair Sarah Arcand as well as volunteer coordinator Debbie Tackabury, who provided an amazing team of volunteers to help us at the portrait booth – including Esther Weatherall, Alanna Vanstone, Alan Li, Chelsea Ewing, Emily Peterman, Emily Williams, Tori Ly and Anna deGroot-Maggetti. Special thanks also to Erica Bota from ThinkLink Graphics, who did an amazing realtime doodle of the Six String Nation presentation, which I’ll share on Instagram in the coming days.
Musical Muskoka with @OMEAOntario #OMEAInterlude2017 was originally published on Six String Nation
