MASTERLIST
Heartbeat | Jack Hughes
- prologue part 3
Author’s note: next chapter will be the last from Summer 2015, and then we are jumping to 15 year old Thalia and 17 year old Jack;)

August, the month of bittersweet feelings that danced in Thalia's mind. It marked the final chapter of summer, before her parents' usual working schedule resumed its course. They always tried to fit as many vacations making it remarkable month, but the thought of returning to the usual schedule always resided in the back of her mind.
The air conditioning hummed softly as the radiant warmth of summer enveloped the living room. The Hughes and Mariott children found solace in the cool oasis, scattered around, their laughter and playful banter filling the air. The summer season had a way of drawing them closer, like a magnetic force pulling them into the embrace of shared experiences and cherished moments.
Quinn and Mattheo sat together, their eyes gleaming with anticipation. Their conversation revolved around their upcoming hockey schedule, a topic that ignited a fiery passion within them.
With each word spoken, their voices grew animated, mirroring the intensity of their emotions. They eagerly discussed the games, practices, and tournaments that lay ahead, their minds already envisioning the thrill of the ice beneath their skates and the roar of the crowd. The prospect of competing against formidable opponents and showcasing their skills filled them with a sense of purpose and determination.
As they delved deeper into their conversation, the brothers shared their strategies and aspirations, their dreams of scoring the winning goal or making a game-changing save. They spoke of the camaraderie forged on the ice, the unspoken bond that exists among teammates who battle side by side, united by a common goal. The anticipation radiated from them, their enthusiasm infectious, as they eagerly awaited the challenges and triumphs that awaited them in the upcoming hockey season.
Luke, Thalia, and Jack gathered around the coffee table, engrossed in a board game. Ever since Luke’s and Thalia’s memorable bike ride together, they had become inseparable, forming a bond that seemed unbreakable. Their shared adventure had forged a friendship that was as strong as steel.
As they played, their competitive spirits ignited, fueling their determination to emerge victorious. Luke and Thalia, now attached at the hip, teamed up against Jack, who couldn't help but voice his complaints. Undeterred by Jack's antics, Luke and Thalia skillfully strategized, their minds working in perfect harmony as they were making the winning moves
With each roll of the dice and every turn of the game pieces, Luke and Thalia seemed to have an uncanny ability to anticipate each other's moves, almost as if they were connected by an invisible thread. Their teamwork was impeccable, their communication seamless, and it was evident that they had found their rhythm as a formidable team.
As the game progressed, Luke and Thalia's confidence soared. They were acing the game, leaving Jack (always the winner) suprised, his athlethe mindset making him antsy.
Jack's whines echoed through the room with each well-executed move made by Luke and Thalia. Luke, visibly annoyed by Jack's complaints, couldn't help but roll his eyes in exasperation. Thalia, had developed a soft spot for Jack. There was something about his playful nature that tugged at her heartstrings, even though she tried to hide her childlike crush.
As the game progressed, Thalia found herself stealing glances at Jack, her cheeks turning a shade of red whenever their eyes met. It was as if a secret connection had formed between them, filled with innocent admiration and the fluttering of butterflies in her stomach.
Mattheo couldn't help but feel a sense of relief as he noticed the color returning to his sister's face. It had been a challenging time for their family, but seeing her smiling brought him a glimmer of hope.
As they chatted, Mattheo couldn't shake the feeling of dread that loomed over him. The unavoidable reality of the upcoming drive to the airport next week weighed heavily on his heart. He knew that saying goodbye to his sister would be incredibly difficult, as they shared a bond that went beyond mere siblinghood.
The thought of being separated from his sister, made Mattheo realize just how much he would miss her. They had always been there for each other, supporting one another through the highs and lows of life. The idea of not having her by his side was both daunting and heartbreaking.
Mattheo cherished the moments they spent together, whether it was engaging in deep conversations or simply sharing laughter over inside jokes. He knew that their bond was special, and the thought of being apart made him appreciate their time together even more.

The sun began its descent, casting a warm and golden hue over the surroundings, the time for the weekly dinner had arrived. The dining room was adorned with a table set for two families, eagerly awaiting the arrival of Ellen and Jim. Their presence added an extra layer of joy to the already lively atmosphere.
Dimmed lighting of the light made the feeling more homey. The families effortlessly engaged in conversations, sharing anecdotes from their daily lives, discussing current events, and reminiscing about cherished memories. The dining room became a sanctuary of comfort and connection, where the bonds of friendship and family grew stronger with each passing moment.
Amidst the laughter and lively banter, the clinking of glasses echoed throughout the room, as toasts were made to celebrate the joys of life and the blessings of friendship. The atmosphere was one of pure bliss, where time seemed to stand still, allowing everyone to savor the precious moments spent together.
As the evening drew to a close, the room was filled with contentment and gratitude. The dinner had not only nourished their bodies but also their souls, leaving them with a sense of fulfillment and happiness. The memories created during this shared meal would forever be cherished, serving as a reminder of the power of love, laughter, and genuine connections. The clock approached midnight, signaling the end of a wonderful evening, the Hughes family began to get ready for their leave.
However, just as they reached the entrance of the home, their footsteps were halted by the enthusiastic pleas of Thalia, who was determined to extend the joyous atmosphere of the evening. With a sparkle in her eyes and a hopeful smile on her face, she implored Jim and Ellen for a movie night with Jack, Luke and Quinn, as if to prolong the magic of the shared moments they had experienced.
Caught in the irresistible charm of Thalia's request, the parents couldn't help but be swayed by her infectious enthusiasm.
With the couch expanded to accommodate all the children, the stage was set for an epic movie night. The enticing aroma of freshly prepared snacks filled the air. Thalia, ever the princess in her own right, confidently declared her favorite movie choice: "Tangled."
Now, as you can imagine, the boys couldn't help but voice their playful complaints. They tried to persuade Thalia to consider a different movie, perhaps something with more action or adventure. But Thalia stood her ground, unwavering in her decision. After all, she had her heart set on the magical tale of Rapunzel and her incredible journey.
The room grew quiet as the movie began, and the screen came alive with vibrant colors and captivating animation. The boys, despite their initial reservations, found themselves quickly drawn into the story, unable to resist the charm and magic that unfolded before their eyes.
Thalia, on the other hand, sat with a satisfied grin, knowing that her choice had captivated everyone's attention. She giggled with delight as Rapunzel's long golden hair cascaded down the tower, and she sang along to every catchy tune that filled the room. The boys couldn't help but be swept up in her infectious enthusiasm.
Snacks were enjoyed in between moments of suspense and excitement, adding an extra layer of indulgence to the movie night. The boys reached for handfuls of popcorn, their fingers coated in buttery goodness, while Thalia savored her favorite candies, savoring each sweet bite.
As the movie came to its heartwarming conclusion, the children found themselves gradually succumbing to the cozy atmosphere and the gentle lull of the film. One by one, their eyelids grew heavy, and their heads began to nod in sleepy contentment.
Thalia, still basking in the magic of "Tangled," couldn't help but smile as she looked around the room. The boys who had initially protested her movie choice now lay sprawled across the couch, their soft snores harmonizing with the movie's closing credits, she soon joined them too in the peaceful sleep.

Confessions of a Recovering Genrephobic 3/2/24
Hey Whores, This is a accurate depiction of the tax process.
I also just got my first traffic ticket this week so I'm definetly going to Hole up and watch the entirity of THE GAUNTLET to sooth my feeles of gulit, anxiety, and bueracratic frothing rage. Now it was my fault I just feel bad that i did something reckless.
Crosswords EP (2015) - Panda Bear
Genre: Experimental, Electronic Length: 21:03 (5 Tracks)
Panda Bear is one of members of the that hipster indie group Animal Collective and weirdly enough I have never listened to them.
I don't have anything meaningful to say about this Extended Play. The work falls somewhere between ambient and a shoegaze album. Its nice but it doesn't really stick with me
2.5/5
RUN-D.M.C (1984) - Run-D.M.C
Genre: Hip Hop Length: 39:27 (9 Tracks)
"It sounds to me that they sang the same song 20 times, but you know it was a great song" - 'Celtic Woman'-SNL
so i always growing up here that classic opening bars of 'so i always growing up here that classic opening bars of 'It's Tricky' and thinking wow what a unique and novel flow for this song I imagine that there other songs sound different in some way.
Suffice to say that I was not expecting to listen to their debut album be entirely of the call-and-response that typified there work.
I would love to understand their impact and how much it affected contemporary audiences but I will say that with my tin ears I didn't get much out of it.
3/5
Whats the Story? (Morning Glory) (1995) - Oasis
Genre: Britpop, Rock Length: 50:06 (12 Tracks)
I was listening to newest sad indie pop girlies The Last Dinner Party and I swore that one of there singles contained the lines 'Whats the Story? (Morning Glory)'
according to Genus Lyrics the line is in fact, 'Pray for me on your knees' regardless,
WTS(MG) is the second studio album by Oasis.
And its rather nice. I'm sure your've heard Oasis its a very 90s rock band with that kind of grudgy flowing? compressed? sound. Its much more my speed. I had a nice time.
4/5

Overview of Singapore's Botanic Gardens.
Singapore's Botanic Gardens is a national treasure, boasting a rare collection of plant species and it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, with approximately 4.4 million visitors annually. The gardens were set up in 1859 by Singapore's Agri-Horticultural Society. The park contains three sections: The Tanglin Core Area, Bukit Timah Core Area, and Jacob Ballas Children's Garden. It is home to over 10,000 species of plants and animals and has lush landscapes and rolling hills. Visitors will discover six lakes teeming with aquatic life, such as freshwater turtles and terrapins, alongside walking trails lined with trees and flowers.

History of the Botanic Gardens.
The Botanic Gardens preserves Singapore's natural heritage and they were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015. Since its inception, it has grown from an experiment in crop cultivation to one of the world's most renowned botanical gardens. In the 82 hectares of land can be found more than 10,000 species of plants which include rare orchids and plant species native to Singapore. It is also home to many historic buildings, such as the National Orchid Garden and Burkill Hall, preserved for their historical significance. The garden also features an array of sculptures and artwork from various cultures across Asia.

Flora and Fauna of the Botanic Gardens.
The Singapore Botanic Gardens is the only tropical botanical garden on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It is one of three gardens to be awarded the prestigious Garden of Excellence by the World Federation of Rose Societies. This lush oasis houses diverse flora and fauna, making it one of Singapore's most beloved attractions. The gardens boast an impressive collection including orchids, palms, spices, gingers, and even mangroves. On top of that, several hundred species of birds, reptiles, and amphibians live amongst its various habitats. The habitats include swamp forests, freshwater streams, and ridges.

The gardens have something for everyone, from lush greenery to nature trails and waterfalls. Visitors can explore the vast parkland on foot or participate in educational workshops such as gardening classes, guided tours, and talks on conservation practices. For those who prefer a stroll, there are guided walks through the gardens to discuss its flora and fauna. There are also several lake-side restaurants where visitors can relax while enjoying spectacular views over the lake. The gardens also host regular festivals throughout the year with live music performances, food stalls, and interactive activities for children.

The Botanic Gardens Today.
The Botanic Gardens were opened in 1859 as a plantation of the East India Company. Today, it is one of the oldest surviving gardens from the colonial era, having been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015. In the gardens, visitors can explore a variety of vegetation, including tropical rainforest trees and plants from various parts of Southeast Asia. The grounds offer many attractions for locals and tourists, such as guided tours, educational programs, and recreational activities. Nature lovers will find plenty to admire, with around 865 flowering plants spread across five sections: Evolution Garden; Healing Garden; National Orchid Garden; Rain Forest Trail; and Sun Garden.

Reblogging this too in case anyone following me saw these posts and felt discouragement. This is DEFINITELY not criticism of anyone still around and posting inukag content, truly you are all like an oasis for us experiencing what feels like a drought compared to what the fandom once was.
And dear anon, most of us still around on tumblr also came into the Inuyasha fandom “late,” considering the original content was completed in, what, 2008? And started in 1996? This is an old fandom no matter what metric you measure by. The anime was only a few years behind and I think most networks stopped airing reruns around 2012 or so. The anime getting added to streaming services is what caused a huge resurgence in fandom around 2015 I think?
Ironically it could have been the increase in fandom content online that led to execs at Sunrise to push the “sequel” and it DID excite a great many of us. Then we got…what we got and pretty much anyone who wasn’t a hardcore sessrinner agreed that HnY was bad. Just extremely low quality storytelling and it nearly slandered the original characters we all loved.
And, in my observation, the popularity of non-canon pairings hasn’t dropped nearly as much as inukag and mirsan. Maybe because they were never canon so they are better equipped to keep their energy for their ship alive?
As an InuKag creator that came into the fandom late, it feels discouraging to say there's a drought in content when we're still here trying our best.
It's good that you sent me this because I realize now how my wording could be interpreted this way and it's not what I mean at all.
I'm an Inukag creator too and the last thing I want is to discourage anybody. Especially because I do my best to always stalk the Inuyasha tag and reblog and comment as much content as I can. I know how important that is.
My post was just an observation slash vent. I'm sorry we didn't have you in the fandom earlier but if we had, maybe the difference between then and now would probably hit you as hard as it hits me.
And the "drought" isn't limited to content, I wasn't clear about that before so that's my bad. The "drought" is due to the fact that Yashahime pushed a lot of great people away, other artists saw their engagement numbers decrease because of it and left as well (which is completely valid) and then it got to the point where we barely even talk about Inuyasha anymore.
This is not exclusively a Tumblr issue because I've noticed the same thing on Twitter. It just feels like everybody is moving on and while I understand that (I myself haven't been as active here as I used to be because I have a huge test coming up) I can't help but feel sad about it and just miss the way things were.
I know everybody is trying their best, I'm not trying to undermine that. I actually rely on it. So please forgive me for indirectly discouraging you (and potentially others). It was not the intention. I'm trying my best as well.
I just needed to rant a little.
#i have to filter my ao3 bookmark to inuyasha/kagome otherwise it’s just full of sesskag#no hate no shade but it’s not my preference

-After doing shows, the singer went back to his band and released their second album Zero to which reached #1 on Billboard and was even nominated for a Grammy but unfortunately did not win.
-However, his band has been nominated for. Many awards and was won Best Male Video last year. Since then, the band has been growing and growing.
-In the year 2015, Zuko became a music producer, producing his bands music but also producing for other musicians and has even wrote quite a few songs for different artists.
-Since then, Zuko and his band have been growing and growing and are nominated for a grammy for their third album Light In The Darkness, which Zuko says is inspired and dedicated for his Uncle Iroh who took him in after being kicked out of his father's home and was the one who supported him during his career.
Rumors
-During the Music Festival of Caldera, many rumors about Zuko and the R&B singer Sokka have circulated the internet.
-The two were said to have met at the festival after being told they were going to be performing together.
-They say their first interaction was when Sokka told Zuko he "smelled like weed" and the band singer responded with "I am weed"
-which is no surprised since back in 2017 the singer was arrested for the possession of weed in his ex boyfriends car and was taken into custody.
-After the show, fans reported that the two began getting close. They were seen getting some food together and even sharing a funnel cake together. Fans swept it under the rug, reporting they were just hanging out and getting to know each other
-Soon, Linkin Park announced they were doing a song with Sokka called "Heavy" and fans began creating rumors and claims that the song sounded slightly romantic especially after they looked like they were getting cuddly after the music festival.
-After the song was released, the ship name Zukka became the most trending tag on Twitter. People claimed there had to be something going on between the two but singer Sokka tweeted that there was nothing happening between him and Zuko that the two just clicked and became good friends.
-They haven't done a song together in a while but that doesn't stop fans from speculating there's more going on in closed doors
Do you think there's something happening? Or is it just rumors?
Your choice.

In the Field: Following the Work of a Paleontologist
Introduction by Jessica Sperdute
Edited by Matt Lamanna
With 22 million specimens housed at Carnegie Museum of Natural History (CMNH) and nearly 10,000 on display at any given time, chances are you’ve seen a dinosaur or two during your museum visits. But have you ever wondered how those dinosaurs get to the museum after they’re found? Or how we know where to dig for them in the first place?
What is a Fossil?
Fossils are the remains of animals, plants, and other ancient life that have been preserved in rock layers, or sediment. Fossils can include things such as leaves, skin, feathers, hair, footprints, and, most commonly, hard material such as wood, shells, teeth, and bones. Even poop can be fossilized! Many kinds of fossils are rare, and studying them can help us understand how the world looked tens of thousands or even millions of years before our time. Scientists who study fossils are known as paleontologists.
Looking at the Layers
Paleontologists use many tools to help them find fossils, but the key to knowing where fossils may be hidden underground lies with rocks—massive layers of rocks, called strata, are piled onto one another over time. These layers of different rocks can tell us not only what type of rock the layer is made of, but also approximately how old the layer is. The study of rock layers is called stratigraphy, and paleontologists use it to find potential fossil beds. For instance, if a paleontologist is looking specifically for fossils of dinosaurs, they would use stratigraphy to locate exposed layers of sedimentary rocks that formed at the time when dinosaurs lived and died—the Mesozoic Era. Once rocks from the Mesozoic Era are found in a location, the paleontologist goes to that location to hunt for fossils.
Big Prospects
Finding the right type of strata is only half the work of finding fossils; once paleontologists arrive at the field site, they need to physically walk around and search for clues that fossils may be around or underneath them. This is called prospecting, and the best place to prospect is usually at the base of a hill. Wind and rain will erode or gradually wear away rocks, allowing some fossils to break loose from higher sediments and roll downhill. If a fossil fragment is found, the team can then search the area to see if there may be other, more complete fossils—oftentimes higher up the hill and still embedded in rock.
Once prospecting has yielded an area where a fossil is likely to buried, the team can begin to block out the site and start digging. They use a wide variety of tools—even household items like paintbrushes, shovels, and hammers—to uncover fossils without damaging them. Records are taken of this step-by-step process to ensure all the data, from the precise location of the dig site, to the type of fossils found and their spatial relationships to one another, and even the measurements of the quarry, is kept for further study.
Safety First
The team has found a fossil, dug it up, and recorded the data. Now what? Once a fossil has been carefully excavated, it needs to be protected. Most fossils are delicate, so to transport them, especially larger ones, paleontologists use a method called plaster jacketing to protect them. First, they wrap the fossil in soft material such as paper towels, toilet paper, or aluminum foil to cover it. Then they wrap the covered fossil in strips of burlap that have been soaked in liquid plaster. This method is like using a cast on broken bones. After the plaster hardens, it acts as a shield. When the fossil has been safely transported and is ready to be studied or put on display at a place like Carnegie Museum, the paleontologist can gently cut away the plaster without damaging the fossil inside.
Paleontologist Photos
Dr. Matt Lamanna, Mary R. Dawson Associate Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology here at CMNH, has shared some of his favorite photos of his work at previous fossil dig sites. Look at the photos—do you recognize some of the locations, the tools that Dr. Lamanna is using, or the fossils that he’s digging up?
Here, Carnegie Museum of Natural History Mary R. Out of curiosity do you have any thoughts on the rwby fandoms inability to handle even the slightest bit of criticism? Because all fandoms are like that, but I feel like rwby has it worse. I'm thinking mostly of how mad people get about the various video essays that are critical of rwby, to the point where there mere existence is treated like some sort of attack on the fandom. Or how some blogs refuse to entertain the idea that maybe not everything rwby does is secretly genius, and maybe sometimes rwby is just badly written. And I wonder why.
(Also, one of the reasons I like your blog is because you're willing to talk about rwbys flaws, while still liking the show, and without going full hatedom. It's a nice balance, and a rare oasis in fandom tbh.)
If I had to guess, the unique melting pot of reasons RWBY’s fandom are more hyper-defensive than usual would include;
A lot of RWBY fans got into the series while they were in their early-mid teens and have grown up with the show. So it’s been there for them come hell or high water and critique of the series has a more personal sting than it would.
RWBY has a lot of really, really bad critics. Like, I’m not gonna try and justify or gloss over that, there’s a lot of really lame critics on YT who either have a grudge against RT or just aren’t very good at articulating their criticisms who drag the perception down.
Monty’s death had a huge impact on the fandom and I’d have to assume that for the people who were around as it hit back in 2015, RWBY has more of a sentimental value to it thanks to the idea that this was his last project and it would be insulting to disparage it.
RWBY and the fandom have been whipping boys for the wider anime community since Day 1. People tend to forget it these days thanks to some historicial revisionism, but Volumes 1 and 2 were not popular online and lots of people mocked the series back during V1.
Rooster Teeth is a far more “personal” company than many others like say, the animation studios behind Voltron, JJBA and She-Ra. We get a good idea of who personally animated what scene, we have a better idea of the corporate ladder of the animation block and RWBY is the one of the only fandoms I’m in that keeps up with the crew and who gets promoted/leaves. On the one side that’s good as animators always deserve more respect, but on the other it means there’s a more personal edge to the criticsm. “This person’s mocking this scene but I know who animated that and I must defend them.” So RT and it’s wonderful web of parasocially abusive relationships strikes again.
Also on the topic of RT, usually people who like RWBY get into RT’s other series so they begin to associate more with the company due to watching the podcasts or the Achievement Hunter videos. So again, giving the company more of a personal identity.
And uh thanks for the second paragraph.

Bacterial bloom as the Earth thawed: Photosynthetic organisms during the Snowball Earth

Bacterial bloom as the Earth thawed: Photosynthetic organisms during the Snowball Earth
Some researchers hypothesize that ice sheets enveloped the earth during the Marinoan glaciation (650-535 million years ago) in what is dubbed the “Snowball Earth.” The glaciation also impacted the climate and chemical compositions of the oceans, restraining the evolution of early life. Yet, as the earth warmed, and the Ediacaran period dawned, biotic life began to evolve.
A research team from Tohoku University has unveiled more about the evolutionary process of the Marinoan-Ediacaran transition. Using biomarker evidence, they revealed possible photosynthetic activity during the Marinoan glaciation. This was followed by photosynthetic organisms and bacteria entering a period of low productivity. However, as eukaryotes expanded during the early Ediacaran period, they blossomed.
Dr. Kunio Kaiho, who co-authored a paper with Atena Shizuya, said, “Our findings help clarify the evolution of primitive to complex animals in the aftermath of the Snowball Earth.” Their paper online was published in the journal Global and Planetary Change on August 8, 2021.
The late Neoproterozoic era (650-530 million years ago) witnessed one of the most severe ice ages in the Earth’s 4.6-billion-year history. Researchers believe that ice sheets covered the entire earth since glaciogenic units, such as ice-rafted debris, are distributed globally. Overlaying these glaciogenic formations are cap carbonates. These precipitate under warm conditions and therefore suggest that the glacial environment changed rapidly into a greenhouse environment.
The Snowball Earth hypothesis purports the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration controlled the change from a frozen state to an ice-free state. Ice sheet-covered oceans prevented the dissolution of carbon dioxide into seawater during the Marinoan ice age, meaning greenhouse gas concentration, emitted by volcanic activity, increased gradually. Once the extreme greenhouse effect kicked in, glaciers melted and excess carbon dioxide precipitated on glaciogenic sediments as cap carbonates.
Whilst the Snowball Earth theory explains the wide distributions of glacial formations, it fails to shed light on the survival of living organisms. To counteract this, some researchers argue that sedimentary organic molecules, a molecular clock, and fossils from the late Neoproterozoic era are evidence that primitive eukaryotes such as sponges survived this severe ice age. Alternative models also propose that an ice-free open sea existed during the glaciation and acted as an oasis for marine life.
But what is understood is that the Marinoan glaciation and the succeeding extreme climatic transition likely had a marked impact on the biosphere. Shortly after the ice age, the Lantian biota, the earliest-known complex macroscopic multicellular eukaryotes, emerged. The Lantian biota includes macrofossils that are phylogenetically uncertain but morphologically and taxonomically diverse. Meanwhile, pre-Marinoan species have simple body plans with limited taxonomic variety.
Bacteria and eukaryote biomarkers demonstrate that bacteria dominated before the glaciation, whereas steranes/hopanes ratios illustrate that eukaryotes dominated just before it. However, the relationship between the biosphere changes and the Marinoan glaciation is unclear.
In 2011, Kaiho and his team traveled to Three Gorges, China under the guidance of China University of Science’s Dr. Jinnan Tong to take sedimentary rock samples from the deeper outcrops of marine sedimentary rocks. From 2015 onwards, Shizuya and Kaiho analyzed the biomarkers of algae, photosynthetic activity, bacteria, and eukaryotes from the rock samples.
They found photosynthetic activity based on n-C17 + n-C19 alkanes for algae and pristane + phytane during the Marinoan glaciation. Hopanes within the early and late carbonate deposition showed photosynthetic organisms and other bacteria entering a state of low productivity before recovering. And steranes from carbonates and mudstones after the cap carbonate deposition from the early Ediacaran period indicated the expansion of eukaryotes. The expansion of eukaryotes corresponded to the Lantian biota being morphologically diverse when compared to pre-Marinoan species.
Kaiho believes we are one step closer to understanding the evolutionary process that occurred before and after Snowball Earth. “The environmental stress of closed ocean environments for the atmosphere followed by high temperatures around 60°C may have produced more complex animals in the aftermath.” Their findings show that bacterial recovery preceded eukaryotes’ domination.
Kaiho’s team is doing further studies to clarify the relationship between climate change and the biosphere in other locations. They are also studying the relationship between atmospheric oxygen increases and animal evolution from the late Cryogenian to early Cambrian (650 to 500 million years ago).

Speaking of crocodile mummies: The “sacred crocodile” is a recently-described cryptic species from remote desert oases in the Sahara; this was apparently the crocodile species venerated in Sobek-worship ceremonies in ancient/Roman Egypt, and DNA from crocodile mummies helped reveal the species. They’re smaller and much friendlier than Nile crocodiles.
This is a mummified crocodile from Egypt, about 2,500 years old, now at the British Museum. The museum put scans of the crocodile on display in 2015-2016. The species is probably the “sacred crocodile.”
And here’s a living sacred crocodile.
They’re apparently known to be (relatively) friendly and docile enough to have been housed by Ancient Egyptians.
An excerpt:
There was anecdotal evidence about the weird behaviour of this crocodile. Many people, from Herodotus to current researchers, have described a sort of Nile crocodile that behaved differently. From my reading of the earlier literature about the exploration of the Nile, there were some suggestions of a smaller crocodile hanging out in the estuaries while the large, aggressive ones that everyone was afraid of lived in the middle of the Nile. Matt Shirley and I have thought about analysing the fine-scale ecological differences between the two to see if you could tap into how they could have overlapped in the Nile for so long before the recent period. Did they use different habitats or have different prey?
Tara Shine found these crocs living in caves in Mauritania that initially appeared to be sluggish because they were hanging out at the hottest time of the year. But people could feed them and come up to them and they weren’t aggressive at all. And some of the local populations apparently consider these crocs sacred. She took some samples and we now know that these are C.suchus.
Were the Egyptians aware of the differences between the two species?
Herodotus wrote that the ancient Egyptians recognised one crocodile that was larger and aggressive and another that was tamer and considered sacred, which they raised in temples. That’s part of what Geoffrey St Hilaire used in his description of the species.
(End of excerpt.)
It had been assumed by Western scientists and isntitutions that the crocodile living in Egypt and in oases in the Sahara were Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus). But it turns out that a smaller, more docile, cryptic species was hiding in plain sight. This crocodile has since been recognized as a distinct species - Crocodylus suchus. Its common name is sometimes given as “West African crocodile” and sometimes given as “sacred crocodile” - allusion to its heightened status in Ancient Egypt.
Here’s ya boy, Sobek (from the mortuary temple of Amenemhet III at Kom Ombo).
And here’s a living sacred crocodile.
How was it determined to be a different species than the Nile crocodile?
An excerpt:
In Chad, Klemens had stumbled across six crocodiles in a small oasis and, at his guide's recommendation, jumped in with them. Puzzled by their docile behaviour, Klemens took tissue from a dead one. (...)
The iconic Nile crocodile actually comprises two different species — and they are only distantly related. The large east African Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) is in fact more closely related to four species of Caribbean crocodile than to its small west African neighbour, which has been named (Crocodylus suchus). Evon Hekkala of Fordham University in New York and her colleagues revealed evidence for the existence of the second species by sequencing the genes of 123 living Nile crocodiles and 57 museum specimens, including several 2,000-year-old crocodile mummies.
"It wasn't even remotely related to the Nile crocodile samples I had been working on." Hekkala's group collected as many Nile crocodile samples as they could find, including several from ancient mummified animals. All of the mummies were of C. suchus, indicating that the ancient Egyptians had recognized the differences between the two reptiles. Indeed, the ancient Greek historian Herodotus wrote that the Egyptians selectively used a smaller, tamer crocodile in ceremonies and regarded it as sacred.
(End of excerpt.)
The preserved DNA in mummified crocodiles from Ancient Egyptian sites helped taxonomists to determine that crocodiles used in Egyptian ceremony were distinctly different from the Nile crocodiles of East Africa.
These are crocodile mummies, prepared by Ancient Egyptians, on display at the museum at the Kom Ombo temple.
How do they occupy the desert?
During the early Holocene, the Sahara was much wetter, with some broad lakes and swamps occurring throughout the huge desert region, including the relatively famous Lake Chad. Over the past several thousand years, as these swamps disappeared, underground waterways continued to feed some oases. This resulted in the isolation of small pockets of some freshwater animals. There are genetic lineages of pygmy hippopotamus and desert crocodiles that have persisted in remote oases in the desert.
Outside of the Sahara, the sacred crocodile appears to be present across West Africa. Here’s a comparison between the distribution of the sacred crocodile and Nile crocodile.
Here’s where the sacred crocodile lives in the Sahara at present, including known sites that they used to inhabit over the past couple thousand years when the Sahara was much wetter. Though the crocodile used to live throughout the Sahara, notice that the crocodile is now mostly limited to Mauritania, though it’s possible that the Tibesti of Chad still hosts some crocodiles. They certainly used to be present in Egypt near Thebes and the Nile Delta.
Here are some examples of the desert oases where the crocodile persists.
Warning for dead/decaying animal body image.
Look at these little crocodiles and their desert oasis cave habitat!
