first time i watched 'no exit' i was 100% in jo's corner like oh great it's sexist dean time . wheeee let's all watch her learn a lesson about hunting and he can be 'right' in a factual way but he'll be as obnoxious as possible about it the whole time . now i think what's happening here is that he has pretty much instantly samzoned her, as a college dropout from a hunting family who has a contentious relationship with her one surviving parent. EXCEPT that she's a five-foot-something twiggy barely-out-of-her-teens woman who has a crush on him and has never been on a serious hunt before, and he's dismissive/over-vigilant enough with the actual sam, a powerfully-built man with clairvoyant powers and over a decade of experience. bearing that in mind, his behavior towards jo is barely outside his normal realm of bossy and overbearing, and since he knows a little something about how sams will respond to direct orders, he still tells her mother she's not on the hunt with them so as to avoid the fallout until it's over. basically i think the whole dean thing, his most consistent characterization over the course of fifteen years, is his tendency to express even genuine protectiveness through the medium of 'bossy older sibling', and this makes him come off like the worst person on the planet. he frequently IS, but it's actually because of other things and has nothing to do with that habit in specific
#'you sound like my mother' 'oh that's a bad thing?' < dean thesis statement of the episode. yeah he sounds like that bc he is a mother jo#like. maybe because i was eighteen when i first watched it i was like he is being SO dismissive to her! she's grown! she's an adult!#but i'm nearly thirty now and alona tal is SO young in this episode . you could snap her like a twig#and she's like. i mean i have a twenty-one-year-old sister and the things i would and would not approve of her doing#based on my perception of her ability to not get hurt in the process. whoof#it's weird . not saying dean winchester can ever be valid but maybe for this one he's just correct in a rude way after all#and then he gets right into the other dean thesis: she has OPTIONS. why is she doing this when she could be doing literally#anything else. he never gets to the point where he considers he could just go do something else. that will never occur to him#but when it comes to sam-type people he assumes they should want the other options. and he is TERRIFIED of this with sam specifically#jo isnt his actual sister so she can and should explore the other options. but if sam does he thinks he'll never see him again#his evidence for this is that when sam went to college they didnt talk for four years. but he also never thinks#'we're better about communication now and if he went back to school we would definitely still talk'#because he assumes all things that have happened in the past will happen that way again. and he's in supernatural. so it's a fair assumptio#spn#q

Cross (2024 - )
Series adaptation of James Patterson novels about the complicated and brilliant detective, Alex Cross.
A really good show (though it does have some gory scenes) that I binge-watched over one weekend. Aldis Hodge, who plays Alex Cross, is excellent casting, as he perfectly embodies how I imagined Alex Cross while reading a couple of Patterson's novels a few years ago. You cannot help but root for him. I also appreciated how contemporary issues about the police, and a famous case (see if you can work it out when you watch the series) were raised in this series. I also enjoyed the bromance between Alex Cross and his best friend Detective John Sampson. I recommend it. Check it out!
P.S. Alex Cross's house is very beautiful. Many times I was distracted by the beautiful interiors of his house.

Back to Supernatural in the New Year (Happy 2024, I guess), this time with one of the hardest episodes for me to watch.
I told my husband that "Abandon All Hope" was a rough episode. It was actually where I stopped my previous (incomplete) rewatch of the series, right before I got to that episode.
My husband really liked both Jo and Ellen, and he was angry with the whole thing.
On a less sad note about the episode, he immediately figured out that Cas was going to do Uriel's trick with the bolt, along with doing this

to get out of the fire.
My face to him was like

And he says, "What? I like solving puzzles!"

SUPERNATURAL REWATCH, 2x02: “Everybody Loves a Clown”
-God, that is a creepy ass clown.
-You all need to be a lot more concerned about her seeing a clown on the side of the road.
-Sweetie, why the fuck would you let a clown you saw at the carnival and the side of the road into your house?!
-The first hunter funeral of the series. Damn... still can't believe they killed off John so soon.
-Dean, I know you're lying, and you need to tell Sam because that secret is going to eat you alive!
-Dean, it's understandable for Sam to be worried about you. You bottle shit up and never tell anyone how you're feeling and it's so unhealthy.
-Oh, so it's been a week since John died?
-Dean stop making a joke out of it. BE HONEST!!
-Dean's reasoning is right, but I know it's partially excuses so he doesn't have to deal with John's death.
-ELLEN!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
-Oh my God, seeing the boys driving this old ass van is so funny!!
Tumblr media
-ASH!! JO!!!!
Tumblr media
-Damn that was a solid punch, Jo.
-The way Ellen knows that John is gone, purely based on the fact that Sam and Dean are there and not John is really telling.
-Jesus, how is Ash so sure that he can figure this out in 51 hours? That's nuts.
-So, Ellen became a hunter because her husband was a hunter?
-Of course, Dean immediately starts flirting with Jo.
-I will admit though, Dean and Jo would have been really cute together.
-The introduction of Sam's fear of clowns.
-Sam: "At least I'm not afraid of flying." Dean: "Planes crash!" Sam: "And apparently clowns kill." Hey! Dean's fear of flying is completely valid. I mean, Sam's fear of clowns is valid to, but Dean's is just a little more understandable.
-I mean, you let your kid come in there with a video game, how are you surprised he's not getting scared by this creepy maze.
-Oh, you really shouldn't have told your son that clowns are your friends.
-With all the shit they see, Sam still getting spooked in that maze is so funny.
-The fact they have to follow this family home to keep them safe from a killer clown is so ridiculous, but very on brand for them.
-What does this clown do to these kids to make them let him in their houses?
-Dean isn't wrong about how Sam being suddenly "obedient" or taking into consideration what John would have wanted them to do is a weird change for Sam, but I also feel like he's just projecting and turning his own anger on Sam.
-Rakshasa? I mean, it all fits, but how do we kill it, if that is what this killer clown is.
-I don't think it's Cooper. That seems too easy. I think it might be the blind guy. He's been on the boy's case since they got there.
-Oh shit, not Dean going to the blind guy.
-He's not even blind!
-Of course, they'd have to fight this thing in the maze!
-Oh, the pipes from the organ, nice thinking Sam.
-Dude, the strobe effect in this maze is fucking with my eyes.
-I like they just randomly have some other hunters in the background to show that other hunters actually come to Ellen's bar.
-Sam: "Oh, yeah, I've got to, uh... I've got to go... Over there... Yeah." Smooth Sam. Real smooth.
-Do not touch his computer, Dean.
-Hey! If Ash says he went to M.I.T., he went to M.I.T.
-Sam opening up about how he's really feeling about John's death and then telling Dean that he knows Dean's not okay is such a good scene. Jared and Jensen's acting is really good.
-Dean taking his anger and grief out on the Impala is such a good scene because it genuinely feels like he's taking it out on John because I know Dean thinks of John whenever he's around the Impala. Dean is so angry and since he doesn't know how to express his feelings, this is the only way he feels he can get them out and it's just heartbreaking to watch. Jensen did so good in this final scene.

As someone who's been around the fandom longer than i, what do you think of the claim that destiel shippers were the reason female characters got killed or kicked off the show? This seems to be a really common narrative in gen fandom spaces like r/supernatural but there's never any mention of wincest shippers and idk I find it kind of dubious. I mean obviously when it's applied to characters like bela or ruby it makes no sense but what about others? Like the claim usually goes oh they could never keep around a love interest for either of them because the hellers would throw a fit but did that happen? Usually it's brought up with Jo, Lisa, Meg, and Hannah. I know that is not actually why Meg left the show, but what about the others? I also know Alona and Cindy Sampson in particular are cited as receiving harassment for their roles but did this actually have anything to do with destiel seeing as it wasn't that popular of a ship back then? I only started watching in 2014 when destiel was the biggest ship and it never seemed to me like they were trying to set up romances that were shot down by the fans. I mean did anyone actually expect hannah to be an endgame love interest? And no one really makes this claim about Amara either. And it also wouldn't apply to characters like Charlie or Missouri either who both still got killed off. Idk I've just been seeing a lot of narrative recently about fans being primarily responsible for the killing off of female characters but I feel like it's shifting blame a bit, even more so to apply it solely to destiel fans (I mean did destiel get Sarah Blake killed??)
Yeah blaming destiel shippers is ridiculous. Destiel shippers didn't even reach preponderance in the fandom until s8. The worst of the misogyny of the fandom was solidly concentrated in the first half of the shows life. Attitudes changed as societal attitudes changed, and as the show itself finally broke down and developed more of an ensemble cast.
The wincesties/bronlies were always far more venomous when it came to characters who threatened to get between the bros. No matter the gender. As can be seen from the segment that tried to keep Misha from coming back. Were there destiel shippers who hated on Meg or Anna or others? Yes, but to a degree that is pretty typical across fandoms, especially in the 2000s. Not to the degree that they actually tried to launch a campaign to get any actors fired. Which, again, is what bronlies did to Misha.
In general I think it's incorrect to blame the fans for female characters being killed off. If the writers are committed to a character and a vision and it's working for them they can make it work for the audience too. The thing with Jo and Bela is that, to my understanding, their existence is the result of network notes to try to include more female characters, so Kripke was never super committed to them in the first place.
You point out why Hannah and Meg don't make sense as examples. Alona's role was in s2, and in s5 she was basically brought back in order to be killed off. Same thing with Sarah Blake, which is a useful counter example. She was also brought back to die. Since neither of them had a recurring role when they were killed off, it doesn’t make sense to blame shippers. Again, it's the writers deciding that the most useful thing a female character can do is die to further the main characters' motivation.
Few people liked Lisa at the time s6 aired, she was seen as boring and as detracting attention from the brothers.
I think there's a relationship between the sexism of the writers and the fans. When the writers don't care about characters and see them as fridging material, fans can pick up on it. And then fan hatred of the character is cited as an excuse to write them off. This is a simplification, I do think there are parts of spn fandom that are particularly toxic, but I also think it's true that fan opinion is never the only reason why writing choices are made.

Strength of the Ancients
[BOTW! Link x F! Reader]
Prologue Part 1
[Next Part]
Tumblr media
A little author’s note before I start! This is a bit self indulgent and part of an idea I’ve been holding onto for a while now that I wanted to try writing out and I’ve decided to start on this platform! If it goes well then I may reach out to other platforms, but, for now, it shall remain here! This story is supposed to branch out throughout the three games and then some both before and after them based from my own imagination, so hopefully we’ll be in this for the long run. Also, the name for Link’s sister will be Alona in this story since she was never given a name in this game. All we know is that if she would’ve been an actual character in the game, she would’ve been a remake of Aryll or that she would’ve had a different name-- which I tried to make a little similar. For the names of Link’s parents, I will be getting them from the Sound and Drama CD which names Link’s father Banzetta and his mother Loretta, as well as Zelda’s mother who appears to be named Seline. Im choosing for the reader to be female for this story, though, again, if the story is liked enough, I will be happy to rewrite it with a male reader if requested. The picture was cropped and found on Picsart!
Masterlist to access the rest of the story!

The steps of the two Hylians, a father and a son, echoed loudly in the castle, the lights pouring in from the crystal-like glass that lined the walls of the hallway. The ceilings rose high above them, the light glittering against the stone on the lower parts of the arches with the aid of the torches that remained lit beneath them. Every now and then, they would pass a guard who stood attentive yet unmoving in place. They simply watched as the king’s guests moved on.
The son appeared to be a little anxious, though he kept quiet as he looked around this rather foreign place. His father was a blacksmith who provided weapons and armor for the royal calvary while him and his younger sister tended to the farm at home in his absences-- although they would often get help from their father if he wasn’t working. The closest the young boy has ever been to the castle was the town below its walls where his father worked and where he and his sister would travel to to sell the goods they grew. The castle was always something he and his sister would admire from afar, yet he never guessed that he would be going inside it.
“Chin up, boy,” The gruff voice of his father reached his ears, causing him to look up at the elder man.
“Yes, sir.” The boy muttered, straightening his posture and looking ahead. They approached large double doors, to which more guards stood at. However, upon noticing their presence, they moved to grab the handles of the door and pulled them open. The doors creaked on their hinges at the movement, though only because of how large they were rather than if they were old or not. Beyond the door way was a large throne room. The ceilings rose even higher than the ones in the halls do-- something the young one didn't not think was possible. In the middle of the back wall, overlooking the whole room, were the thrones that sat underneath a large stained glass mural of the symbol of Hyrule shaped into it. There were three of them, the largest being in the middle, one just a little shorter than it on the left, and a smaller one on the right. The king sat within the middle one. The boy felt himself tense under the king’s intimidating presence alone, feeling his gaze burn into him and his father.
The father stopped a few feet away from the king and knelt down to bow with respect. His son did the same not long after upon noticing his father’s movements. “You’re majesty, it’s an honor to make your presence,” the father spoke up once more in kind greeting before careful getting back to his feet.
“The honor is all mine, Banzetta. You’re presence here was greatly anticipated,” The king looked at the boy now, sitting up in place, “And this must be the boy, correct.” Upon being addressed, the young one quickly got to his feet and straightened his posture-- he hadn’t realized his father had stood up already and was still kneeling on the ground till now. Rhoam stood from his throne and made his way down the steps towards the child. “Let me see your hand, boy.”
And he did just that, not wanting to appear to be disrespectful before someone so powerful. The nervousness still remained as he held out his right hand to him. Though the boy didn’t know the full extent to the markings on his hand just yet, he already knew that it was what the king wanted to see. It was the sole reason why his father brought him here. On the back of his palm rested an ancient symbol known as the ti-force with the bottom right triangle highlighted against his skin. He didn't know what it meant-- but being here was a hope to get answers.
The king knelt down before the boy and took his hand to inspect it. The king’s hold was gentle and he slid his thumb over the triangle shape imbedded in the boy’s skin. “So it’s true then. The Hero of Courage has been reborn.” King Rhoam spoke knowingly. It was hard to tell whether he was in shock or if he was relieved by his tone and this expression didn’t change except for the slight narrowing of the eyes.
The Hero of Courage was someone mentioned in a story the boy had heard from his mother before she had passed away years ago. A hero from the sky, clad in green, who took on an evil being of Power named Demise to save his dear friend and Hyrule from destruction. From then on out, the three wielders of the tri-force continued to be reborn-- Power causing destruction, Wisdom allocating knowledge to the land, and Courage protecting the land. The boy didn’t think the story to be real at the time, mostly because of where the hero seemed to come from. If Hyrule used to have islands in the sky, then where were they now?
“Hylia...” Banzetta muttered with his own surprise. Unlike his son, he did know the story behind the never ending battle between Courage, Wisdom, and Power right away. Although the appearance of the Hero of Courage was one to be celebrating, it also foretold the near future of Hyrule. Hyrule would fall into war once more at the hands of the Calamity and the monsters it brings.
The king stood up from the ground, looking down at the young boy. “Link,” he spoke the name of the boy as he remembered it from the letter, “Do you understand the responsibilities of the Hero of Courage?”
Link held a soft frown and directed his gaze away in thought. If he were to believe his mother’s stories to be true, then-- in a way-- he did have an idea of what the Hero of Courage’s duty was. “Yes, sir,” Link nodded hesitantly along with his words, looking back up at the king as he did so.
“Do you accept this responsibility to protect Hyrule and fulfill the destiny given to you by the Golden Goddesses of old?” The king urged with hope, holding his hands behind his back as he waited for an answer.
Being the reborn hero was hard to believe and yet there was something in the back of his mind telling him to take this chance. It was a call to adventure screaming at him to accept this role. If he was really the Hero of Courage, then he needed to be the one to defeat the wielder of Power that intended to destroy his home. It’s only ever been the Hero of Courage who defeats this evil in every story he’s heard about from his dear mother.
“Y-Yes,” although he stutters, his face shows determination.
The king visibly relaxes, turning back to sit on the throne. “Very well,” he sits down on the throne with each arm resting on the arm rests beside him. King Rhoam turns his attention to Banzetta.
Father and son shared a gaze. The nervousness still hung in the air, yet something new had sparked within the boy. A will, you could say. Banzetta expressed worry, but, upon noting how his son accepted this weight, said nothing. Instead, he looked to the king.
“Banzetta, it would be ideal to keep Link here with our ranks. He will need to start training as soon as possible,” King Rhoam looked to where a couple guards were on the left of the throne room and nodded, to which they both made their way to the pair standing before him.
Banzetta tightened his lips into a straight line. “A-... A week. I’d like to request that he return here for training in a week,” he requested in hopes to give Link a bit of time at home before leaving so suddenly. The boy, in turn, seemed to already agree with this. He loved his sister dearly, after all, and he didn’t want to just leave her on her own without an explanation.
The king huffed to himself as he considered the request. There was time. According to the sages, the Calamity shouldn’t arrive for another half of a decade. They had five years to prepare-- five years to build an army.
“Very well. Return in exactly a week, no time later, no time less.”
Banzetta sighed with relief, “Of course. Thank you, your majesty.”
The king nodded and returned his focus back to Link. “And thank you, young one. Hyrule will forever be in your debt. Guards, please escort these two to the palace gates.”

Been watching Supernatural for the first time and am currently in Jo's era. I love Jo, fly into a mild rage at the show's treatment of her most eps., etc., but it's also reeeeeally funny to watch this first sustained attempt at giving Dean a romance with a woman unfold. At the point I've reached they're so clearly going for that, but every time they attempt a Romance Scene they choose they worst trope you've ever heard of and you watch Dean and Jo take turns initiating but they're BOTH so sullen about it. Then the director goes 'okay now have a sad about your father talk' and Jensen goes 'oh yay! approximating dead father emotions is in my wheelhouse' while Alona presumably goes 'finally a chance to act instead of receiving misogynies' and all of a sudden they have a genuine interesting dynamic. And this is so blatant that from what I hear the show eventually just gives up on the romance.
With the very entertaining result that the Man Show's first attempt at romance spanning beyond an episode ends up looking more than anything like two gays halfheartedly trying to perform heterosexuality and accidentally becoming friends along the way.
YEAH the Jo and dean is quite strange all the way through. I remember hitting it in my rewatch and being really shocked that (iirc) jo is the one who initiates it? And is flirting with dean while dean is so so so in the dead dad depression dumps. It goes straight over his head. He doesn’t engage at all. It’s like. Jo voice. We don’t often get big tall handsome men here. Dean voice. Can you help us l track down a demon. And then a few eps from that she stops flirting with him and HE starts flirting with her in the grossest ways possible while she actively spurns him. Because he’s a misogynist. I know Eric Et Al talked about how basically. They added jo to pander to women. And then women were like If you give dean a girlfriend I’m killing everyone in this room and then myself. So they backpedaled on the romance. But I also don’t feel 100% kosher accepting straight from the misogynist’s mouth that CRAZY FANGURLS FORCED them to change how they wrote women. I mean I don’t doubt there were women who hated jo I’m quite familiar with the woman who hates every woman on tv. But. I also am familiar with how Eric wrote women. So I feel like this disclaimer I’ve just put in is necessary. Point is. It’s a crazy dynamic especially when they put a neat little bow on it in season 7 that says Btw dean thought of her as a little sister and jo had a crush on him because he was a Cool Older Man. It’s a hodgepodge of intentions. So it’s like. Jo flirts with dean and dean doesn’t care and then deancflirts with jo and she doesn’t care and he tries to sleep with her and she calls him lame and then jo dies and dean kisses her forehead and feels guilty about her death and then in an alternate reality he’s her brother and then Ghost Jo comes back and says I had a huuuuuuge crush on you and Dean says I always thought of you as my little sister. Comes off Really strange when you look at all of it together.
