"Reputation? I have a reputation?"
|| Questioning Sentences, Vol 8 Status: Accepting! At first, the blonde merely blinked up at his Turk, slow, perhaps offering a moment for Reno to come up with some excuse or take back what he had said. But when the time allotted for such penitence expired, Rufus merely shook his head. "For better, or for worse, you have one." Now, the assessment did not speak to Reno's true competencies, but there were times that certainly left one to wonder where skill ended and luck began.

Rare-Lee Referenced Konitz: An Annotated Appreciation
Tumblr media
Lee Konitz died of COVID-19 related complications (pneumonia) on Wednesday, he was 92. While he had started slowing down in recent years, favoring a personal, if mildly controversial, dialect of vocalese over exacting excursions on his trusty alto saxophone, his intelligence and acumen as an improviser remained undiminished. Konitz matured as a professional musician at a time when bebop was challenging swing for stylistic primacy in jazz.
A coveted stint in Stan Kenton’s big band gave him sea legs, but rather than succumb to the pervasive spell of Charlie Parker, he opted instead for comparative obscurity under the demanding tutelage of Lennie Tristano. Teaming with equally eccentric Lester Young disciple Warne Marsh, Konitz quickly became a master of a fresh offshoot of melodic interpolation, the contrafact. Over an ensuing seventy years he would lend his horns (tenor and soprano also entered his arsenal on occasion) to all manner of improvisational contexts, amassing a discography staggering in both breadth and consistency.
Konitz was an illustrious, if usually unassuming, giant, not just to jazz, but to music in general, fiercely protective of his personal life, but unusually generous with his time and accumulated knowledge. Classics in his voluminous catalog, which numbers well into the triple digits, are many and varied. This brief, annotated list is meant as a complement, highlighting settings that are less celebrated, but less reflective of his unmitigated genius. Rest in peace, Lee.
Konitz Meets Mulligan (Pacific Jazz)
youtube
Schooling the classic Gerry Mulligan Quartet, one of the most popular and innovative ensembles in West Coast jazz, is no mean feat, but damn if Konitz doesn’t do just that on this congenial contrapuntal feast.
Konitz in Europe ’56 (Fresh Sound)
youtube
Nearly eighty-minutes of immersive, sometimes grainy air shots from Paris and Koln with Konitz in the company of a cavalcade of like-minded compatriots including: Lars Gullin, Bobby Jaspar, Hans Koller, and Atilla Zollar.
Tranquility (Verve)
youtube
Konitz in full Tristano-thrall, eschewing piano for fellow Tristanoite Billy Bauer’s plectrum. A cherub-faced Henry Grimes holds down the bass and a polite Dave Bailey brings brushes-leaning drums.
Live at the Half Note (Verve)
youtube
Something of a missing link in the Konitz oeuvre that captures him and Marsh across two sets at a New York club circa 1959 with an ace rhythm section featuring Bill Evans, Jimmy Garrison, and Paul Motian.
From Newport to Nice (Philology)
Tumblr media
A hodgepodge of European concert captures from 1955 to 1980 with two cuts from a 1965 quintet featuring Misha Mengelberg and Han Bennink of special historical interest.
Peacemeal (Milestone)
youtube
Bartok tone poems and jazz standards meet fusion accoutrements as Konitz jockeys between acoustic and amplified horns backed by rhythm section outfitted with option of electric piano.
Zo Ko Ma (MPS)
Tumblr media
Technically guitarist Atilla Zollar’s date, but also a conclave of equals with German trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff embodying the last consonant/vowel dyad in various couplings with bassist Barre Phillips and drummer Stu Martin.
A Buck Clayton Jam Session (Chiaroscuro)
youtube
Konitz is just one of the guys on this unbuttoned conference of long-in-the-tooth swing luminaries, fitting amicably into the Clayton-orchestrated framework and taking his allotted solo space with aplomb.
West Coast Sessions, Vol. 3 (Omnivore)
youtube
Konitz paired with one of his preeminent contemporaries on the alto, the perpetually star-crossed but brilliant Art Pepper in cooperative conversation. It’s Pepper’s date, but Lee is once again indispensable to the winsome outcome.
In Concert (India Navigation)
youtube
An inexplicably rare meeting with Chet Baker running down loquacious readings of standards. Beaver Harris in the drum chair makes it even weirder.
Sweet & Lovely (King)
youtube
Intimate and unpolished latter-day duets with Charlie Haden that are sometimes diffuse, but always honest and intimately affecting.
A Sixty-Year Reunion… How Cool is That? (Wave)
youtube
A London concert date from bassist Peter Ind’s private tape collection with Konitz congenially engaging his old colleague and a young drummer on a string of antique contrafacts.
Dig-It (Steeplechase)
youtube
Danish-financed studio date with another old colleague, tenorist Ted Brown, which finds the tandem reveling at length in the Tristano-influenced side of Konitz’s songbook backed by bass and drums.
RichLee (Steeplechase)
youtube
An “inside baseball” quintet studio session pairing Konitz with tenorist Rich Perry, an elliptical melodic improviser who is very nearly his equal.
On Broadway, Vol. 3 (Winter & Winter)
youtube
Paul Motian’s sublime working trio with tenorist Joe Lovano and guitarist Bill Frisell welcoming Konitz as guest on a tenfold program of musical-sourced standards.
Olden Times - Live at Birdland Neuburg (Double Moon)
youtube
Concert meeting with kindred spirit Kenny Wheeler’s working trio and preferable to the more popular, pastoral ECM studio date under the trumpeter’s name.
Some New Stuff (DIW)
youtube
Konitz coming off as the anti-Zorn while carousing figuratively with the Masada rhythm section (Greg Cohen and Joey Baron) on eleven originals.
Body and Soul: Dedicated to the Memory of Warne Marsh (Insights)
youtube
Japanese concert tribute to Konitz’s tenor alter ego with acolyte Gary Foster weighing in as agile frontline foil on another gathering of fertile contrafacts.
We Thought About Duke (Hat Hut/hatOLOGY)
youtube
Konitz as sideman to Austrian trumpeter Franz Koglmann, but no less essential on quietly radical reworkings of canonical ducal majesty.
Once (Incus)
youtube
Konitz in the improbable but eminently exciting setting of one of Derek Bailey’s free improvisational Company conclaves in London, May of 1987.
Unaccompanied in Yokohama (PSF)
Tumblr media
Solo Japanese recital (guitarist Kazuo Imai shadows on two freely improvised tracks) with sound so intimate that it takes some getting used to, but Konitz is both relaxed and eloquent on his alto in front of a deferentially quiet audience.
Self Portrait (Philology)
youtube
Solo studio date celebrating Konitz’s attainment of septuagenarian status with the conceit that he overdubs his alto on up to four channels in the service of a handful of cherry-picked contrafacts.
12 Gershwin in 12 Keys (Philology)
Tumblr media
Another experiment this time in the company of Italian pianistic confrere Franco D’Andrea tackling selections from the eponymous songbook in a dozen different keys.
Organic-Lee (Steeplechase)
Tumblr media
Strange-lee, Konitz’s only full album with a Hammond B-3 organ, so of course he decides to dispense with any additional accompaniment. Gary Versace at the console makes for an inspired improvisational companion.
L’Age Mür ((Philology)
Tumblr media
Konitz amongst the adoring Italians once again and a special date in that it pairs him in a quartet with his old friend trumpeter Enrico Rava on extended interpretations of standards sans piano.

AUGUST 2019 GOLD STAR MEDIA SCHEDULES & REVIEW
Members may earn 3 points each (up to 6 points) for writing, by the end of August 31 KST September 7 KST:
A solo para of 400+ words based on their monthly schedule (does not count toward your monthly total).
A thread of six posts (three per participant, including the starter) based on their monthly schedule.
Threads do not have to take place directly during an important date listed on the schedule, but must be related to what the muse is mentioned to be doing in the paragraph explaining their schedule/the company’s schedule for the month and/or their thoughts on the mentioned activities or lack thereof.
These schedules may be updated throughout the month if new information needs to be added.
Overall Company
Their company concerts have finally come up at the end of the month after lots of rehearsal. They concerts are a big deal since they’re being held at the biggest venue in the country, one only Origin out of the entire company’s roster have ever held a concert at. Other than a ploy to lift third quarter profits, they’re a clear showcase of Gold Star’s status within the industry, so it’s expected that all idols will be perfectly prepared and the show will go off without a hitch.
Important dates
August 30 & 31: Gold Star Nation 10th Anniversary concerts at Seoul Olympic Stadium. (more details to be announced through an event!)
Gold Star Soloist 1
Album preparations take a back seat this month in order to use her wide appeal to bring in people who aren’t dedicated fans of any particular Gold Star artist to the company concert. She’ll take the lead as a host of behind the scenes videos for the concert again by being tasked with checking in with each act backstage during the concerts on video, once again taking on the role of a “caring senior”. She’ll also be doing fan outreach this month to reassure her restless fans that new work from her is coming soon with a specifically scheduled Q&A on her fancafe (reference of general tone, although the questions and answers don’t need to be assumed to be the same!).
Important dates:
August 13: Fancafe Q&A session.
Gold Star Soloist 2
She’s busy at work this month with concert rehearsals for next month and studio recording for her album. She’s been given permission to announce that she’s been confirmed for a full album comeback, which she’ll be doing on a radio guesting on August 24. She’ll do a radio guesting again a few days later on Arirang radio with Gold Star Soloist 3 where they’ll discuss his recent comeback and her approaching one and she’ll get the chance to make sure her English-speaking fans have also heard the news of her return.
Important dates:
August 24: Guesting on SBS Power FM
August 29: Guesting on Arirang Radio (with Gold Star Soloist 3).
Gold Star Soloist 3
His comeback is in the second half of the month, so for the first half, he films the music video and makes sure he’s got the choreography down. As Gold Star likes to do when they’re pushing for general public reception or when they’re promoting an artist that relies more on public streaming than fandom like Gold Star Soloist 3, he’ll get a radio push alongside music show promotions to reach out to both his domestic and international fans. Of note, he’ll be guesting alongside Gold Star Soloist 2 for one of his Arirang Radio appearances to promote his recent comeback and her recently announced one.
Important dates:
August 6: Runaway MV filming day one.
August 7: Runaway MV filming day two.
August 21: Release of “Runaway” single, promotions continue until September 21.
August 22: Guesting on Arirang Radio.
August 25: Guesting on SBS Power FM.
August 27: Guesting on MBC FM4U.
August 29: Guesting on Arirang Radio (with Gold Star Soloist 2).
Silhouette
Members begin recording for their upcoming mini-album this month, which is what most of their schedules consist of this month other than company concert rehearsals while the company brings in profits from their Japanese album coming out this month. Silhouette has also been selected to perform their singles “I Love You”, “DDD”, “Up & Down”, and “Hush” in a special show for the nation’s armed forces alongside some of the other popular senior girl groups in the industry.
Important dates:
August 14: Release of Japanese album Trouble.
August 18: Performance at K-Force Special Show (also performing: Lipstick, BEE, and Aria)
Aria
Aria will finish filming their Aria’s Parallel Universe series this month and it will begin to be released online for fans after they finish their music show promotions of Wag-Zak to keep fan attention. They have a number of performance and filming schedules for the rest of the month, and they’ve been internally confirmed to hold Seoul concerts in the fourth quarter of the year, so the members will have some early conceptual meetings about that and be expected to brush up on choreography that may make the set list. Aria has also been selected to perform some of their singles, “Wag-Zak”, “Ah-Choo”, “Mr. Chu”, and “I’m So Sick”, in a special show for the nation’s armed forces alongside some of the other popular senior girl groups in the industry.
Important dates:
August 7: End of music show promotions.
August 12: Idol Star Athletics Championships filming (also attending: Lucid, 7ROPHY, WISH, Fuse, Unity, and Knight, to air in September).
August 16: Performance at 2019 K-World Festa at Olympic Park KSPO Dome (also performing: Fuse, Alien, 7ROPHY, and Element).
August 18: Performance at K-Force Special Show (also performing: Lipstick, BEE, and Silhouette).
August 22: Soribada Best K-Music Awards at Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul (also attending: 7ROPHY, Unity, MARS, and Fuse).
Origin
Origin takes off again at the beginning of the month for their Osaka concerts, then return to Seoul to continue Origin World filming. Not all members will be filming every day, but the filming schedule is jam-packed and there’s very little time allotted for filming taking longer than expected. After they finish the second pair of Japanese concerts of the month, it’s just more filming of a different kind for the members as they take a “vacation” in Malta to film a VLive series of the members bonding and “resting”. Once they come back, the members go into final Gold Star Nation concert rehearsals along with comeback prep for their new album.
Important dates:
August 3: Speak Yourself Stadium Tour concert at Yanmar Stadium Nagai in Osaka, Japan.
August 4: Speak Yourself Stadium Tour concert at Yanmar Stadium Nagai in Osaka, Japan.
August 6-15: Origin World and “Heartbeat” MV filming.
August 11: Performance at Lotte Duty Free Family Concert (also performing: WISH).
August 17: Speak Yourself Stadium Tour concert at Shizuoka Stadium in Shizuoka, Japan.
August 18: Speak Yourself Stadium Tour concert at Shizuoka Stadium in Shizuoka, Japan.
August 19-26: Bon Voyage VLive series filming in Malta.
Impulse
Release of a new album and comeback means music show promotions as well as constant fan signs and an appearance on Idol Room. Despite the pressure that’s been put on Impulse, Gold Star isn’t packing promotion schedules too densely this comeback in order to prioritize tour preparation, since that will be the group’s real moneymaking endeavor this year. The members will be rehearsing songs, particularly ones that will be given remix versions for the tour, and doing promotional photo shoots for the tour in between Eclipse’s promotions.
Important dates:
August 5: Release of “Eclipse” & Spinning Top album showcase, promotions continue until September 5.
August 7: Idol Room filming (to air August 13).
August 10: Fan sign in Mokdong, Seoul.
August 16: Fan sign in Gangnam, Seoul.
August 17: Fan sign in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul.
August 18: Fan sign in Jongno, Seoul.
August 24: Fan sign in Seocho, Seoul.
August 25: Fan sign in Gangnam, Seoul.
Fuse
Music show promotions continue and the reception seems to be better than it was for “RBB (Really Bad Boy)”, if going off of music show wins, at least. Fan and public opinion still seems to be split and it doesn’t look like “Zimzalabim” will be in the running for song of the summer, but since Femme Fatale’s song did better than anticipated, Gold Star doesn’t seem to be laying into Fuse for it. They’ve been booked for a Weekly idol episode with the theme of female idols across different companies and generations. The day they end music show promotions, Fuse will also be hosting their fifth anniversary fan meeting, a one day event they’ll be preparing for throughout the rest of the month.
*Reminder: All members must be moved out of their dorm by the end of the month.
Important dates:
August 6: Milkshake MV filming.
August 7: Performance at the 17th Girl Scout International Camp at World Jamboree Center in Goseong.
August 8: Filming of Weekly Idol episode (also appearing: BC Soloist 1 and Gal.actic, to air August 14).
August 12: Idol Star Athletics Championships filming (also attending: Lucid, 7ROPHY, Aria, WISH, Unity, and Knight, to air in September).
August 16: Performance at 2019 K-World Festa at Olympic Park KSPO Dome (also performing: Aria, Alien, 7ROPHY, and Element).
August 22: Soribada Best K-Music Awards at Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul (also attending: 7ROPHY, Aria, MARS, and Unity).
August 24: End of music show promotions.
August 24: Inter-Fuse Vol. 5 5th anniversary fanmeeting at Olympic Hall.
Element
Management has been at work concocting new marketing for Element to help get them out of the shadow of Femme Fatale, their same year debut juniors. In addition to their Seoul concert and a festival performance, Element has been pushed toward a focus of continued online outreach, though it expands beyond their faithful VLives this month. First, they’ll be doing an Ask Me Anything on a Kpop-dedicated Reddit board, which will be filmed and uploaded online afterward. There will be a translator present to translate their answers to English when necessary and all answers will need to be approved by management first. The following week, they’ll film two videos reaching out to their Spanish-speaking fans, a demographic that Gold Star knows is one of their strengths, by filming a video where they try to perform their latest single “Bomb Bomb” in Spanish and a video where they compete at a Spanish vocabulary guessing game (Admin note: Ignore the teams in the video. The teams for Element will be main dancer/lead rapper and main vocal vs. main rapper/lead dancer and maknae/lead vocal/lead dancer. Main dancer/lead rapper and main vocal will win).
Important dates:
August 10: 4lement In Seoul concert at Sogang University in Seoul.
August 16: Performance at 2019 K-World Festa at Olympic Park KSPO Dome (also performing: Aria, Alien, 7ROPHY, and Fuse).
August 23: r/kpop AMA filming.
August 25: Performance at 2019 K-Asia Festival in Incheon (also performing: Decipher and 7ROPHY).
August 28: “Element Masters Spanish” filming and “Try-lingual Live” filming.
Femme Fatale
Now that music show promotions have ended, Femme Fatale turns their sights on preparations for their first ever tour, an arena tour in Japan beginning next month, to really prove that their moneymaking capabilities for the company extend beyond the CFs they’ve been raking in (like the Adidas Originals one they’re booked for this month). Amidst company concert rehearsals, they’ll also be deep in rehearsals and stage costume fittings for their own concerts, the setlist of which will include a solo stage for each member and two group covers to bulk out their current discography. The members will be asked for input on desired concepts, genres, and songs for their solo stages, but ultimately Gold Star will have the final word on what stages they do in order to keep Femme Fatale’s conceptual direction in check for their first major concerts. (Admin note: This means it’s up to the mun whether they had enough say to have chosen their own song(s) or whether management ultimately decided the muse’s songs against their input.) The solo stages are as follows:
Main rapper/lead vocal - Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You - (pt. 2)
Main vocal/lead dancer - Eyes Closed / Eyes, Nose, Lips
Maknae/main dancer/lead rapper - Lemon / Faded / Attention
Lead vocal - Sakurairomaukoro
Members will also be in more intensive Japanese lessons this month in preparation for the tour.
Important dates:
August 10: Adidas Original CF filming.
August 17: Performance at A-Nation 2019 in Osaka, Japan.

Response to the Samara Centre's "Flip the Script" MP Exit Interviews (vol II)
Morden, Michael, Jane Hilderman, and Kendall Anderson. 2018. “Flip the Script: Reclaiming the legislature to reinvigorate representative democracy.” MP Exit Interviews: Volume II. Toronto: The Samara Centre for Democracy. https://www.samaracanada.com/docs/default-source/reports/flip-the-script---by-the-samara-centre-for-democracy.pdf?sfvrsn=2d09002f_2
“I laid down the F-bomb a couple times. In the Whip’s office… And the lawyer comes in and says, ‘Well, you can’t do this.’ And I said, ‘I tell you what.’ I says, ‘The House is recessed. We’re the only ones here.’ I said ‘You find a fucking spare for me. And I know you can’t.’ And I walked out. And I went back in the committee room and I just sat in my chair and waited. [They] came in and said, ‘OK. We’ll have your—your amendment will go through.’ (Morden et al. 2018, 23)”
If the picture the Samara Centre paints of modern-day Parliament is an accurate one, perhaps its Members ought to be using more “f-bombs.” Morden et al. open the analysis claiming, “representative democracy is in trouble (Morden et al. 2018, 4).” They capture some astonishing personal insight from former MPs, which they use as a basis to conclude: “To make meaningful change, priority must be given to reforms that can alter the incentive and power structure within Parliament (ibid, 33).” They go on to make the case for beginning with reforming committees, which will “offer the best promise to empower MPs. (ibid)” In this analysis, I will call into question Samara’s conclusions, offering instead that Members can best reform Government toward representative democracy in Canada by using collective action with a hardened focus on representing their constituents. Or as the former Member (quoted above) so eloquently put it, for party Whips to “find a fucking spare for (them)” when MPs “know (they) can’t.” (ibid, 23)
Political parties are, or ought to be, a national example of the power of collective action. Theoretically, they’re filled with experts on campaigning, on rallying for causes, on pushing through bureaucracy, and on forming a united front to make big, important changes. However, after 54 interviews, a key takeaway from MPs in this study was that being a Member of Parliament is having a “job with no description,” (ibid, 4) implying that many who run for office don’t fully understand what they’re running for. Accounts of debate periods in the House of Commons describe them as “scripted, theatrical and playing to an empty house”, as well as “show business for ugly people” who “read from a script with a different conclusion”, making “no attempt to address” one another’s arguments (ibid, 13). While this clearly raises important considerations for how our Parliament functions, one must also ask how new Members seem to simply adapt, or take this in stride, when they’ve spent months or years committing themselves to serving their constituents. According to the study:
Leaders have grown in strength and capacity relative to the party caucus. Unelected staffers to the leader—the ‘boys (and girls) in short pants’—carefully manage the party brand. As the MPs in our first round of interviews explained, any dissent from the party leadership is rare, inconsequential and swiftly punished. Step out of line, even on an ostensibly free vote, and ‘your name’s now on somebody’s hit list.’ (ibid, 9)
Assuming this were just a result of party leadership, one would expect leadership changes to have an impact. Nearly every party in Parliament had faced leadership changes in the studied duration (2011-2015). If those leadership changes did not have an effect, one must ask: at what point do the Members themselves become complicit? Why didn’t this lead to more leadership reviews? Why weren’t they able to caucus around these shared experiences, or the crisis some have claimed is happening, going so far as to describe that Government’s actions as “autocracy faking it as democracy (ibid, 15),” or more aptly, “evil (ibid, 20).”
Morden et al. present a solution that includes a possible “second chamber” for “more opportunities to hold the Government to account (ibid, 17).” But if Members aren’t performing that key aspect of their role in the first chamber, why should we expect any different in the second? They claim this solution could “provide opportunities to reach the public in creative ways (ibid),” but as members of the public, do we really want our tax dollars going to what are essentially in-office campaigns, or do we want our representatives to do their jobs, even if it means stepping “out of line” (ibid, 9)? If anything resembling campaigns must be run while our Members are serving their term in office, why not caucus to change the circumstances that stand in their way, within their own parties and across party lines? Surely if anyone has the capacity to rally their colleagues toward a cause that benefits everyone involved, professional politicians ought to. Referencing a study by Vox Pop Labs, Morden et al. recount that “Canadians want to see clear lines of accountability, but also collaboration across parties (ibid, 11).” While this may be true in part, it seems to be missing an essential clause: “collaboration across parties” for the good of their constituents.
Reforming committees may be necessary, but it ought to be done in a way wherein Members are working on projects that directly impact the issues facing the communities in their ridings. Forming a deeper knowledge of subject matter is great, if that subject matter is related to one’s campaign promises. Reforming debates may be needed, but we need to be able to trust our MPs to use the time allotted to them to fight for us. This leaves Private Members’ Business, which is clearly not a winning mechanism to put bills forward, particularly with MPs hoping not to be called in the lottery system (ibid, 28).
But still, I’d point to PMB as key. Reform this as a practice. The only time an individual party member should need to go out on a limb is when their constituency has a unique need that cannot be met in any other way. But the lottery system must be replaced with collaborative action that focuses on the shared needs of ridings across the nation—not simply a meritocracy (ibid, 32). We ought to be seeing regional coalitions, language coalitions, coalitions for minority rights, for access to clean water and accessible health care, and so much more. To go through these procedures and collectively agree on only one thing, which is to waste time, is an insult to those suffering who held belief that their elected official would make things better. The performative bills, such as whichever one led to “National Appreciation Day (ibid, 29)” have got to stop. The example given by Morden et al. of “the MP who lobbied heavily among other parties, including the Liberals” and “infected and corrupted well over half (Ignatieff’s) caucus to (their) bill (ibid, 30)” should not be a one-off story, but the norm of what it means to work in Parliament. Perhaps if our Members shared this view, there wouldn’t be such hard lobbying required.
The problem at hand is the future of representative democracy. Creating additional bureaucracy like second chambers (ibid, 17) and more tenured committee positions (ibid, 25), sounds not only like more imposition in the face of action, but just as corruptible long-term as the status-quo. While Morden et al. may want to see MPs finding their voice among committees, one has to ask if that fulfils the issue at hand, or even helps define this “job with no description (ibid, 4).” Members of Parliament run for their ridings, bringing promises of change and better futures for their constituents. One Member had this to say:
These people pour out their hearts to us, as witnesses. And spend untold hours on a 10-minute presentation. And if nothing they say makes the slightest bit of difference, we’re making a mockery of the whole system. And it’s evil. (ibid, 20)
The Member in question was speaking to their work on committees. But isn’t that what happens every time they fail to act on promises made to those who put their trust into them as their representative? To those who send emails, make phone calls, campaign for them, or even make sacrifices in order to place their ballot? If Members are willing to be bullied into abandoning what they chartered as their core principles while Canadians in their ridings lack clean water, adequate healthcare, employment, education, shelter, or other very basic needs, it is difficult to find sympathy for their conflicted position, or the fact that “career success only comes with a role in Cabinet, or on the frontbenches of the Opposition (ibid, 33).”
To conclude, I’ll pose a question the Members who participated in this study, as well as any acting or aspiring Members who may chance upon this critique: being a Member of Parliament may be a job, but it’s not a career. It’s a role one ought to take with the utmost humility, with the weight of the thousands of constituents they’ve sworn to support. Is it harder than it needs to be? Likely. But perhaps before you next take a seat in the House of Commons, ask yourself the following: Are you willing to have those constituents’ backs? Are you willing to put in the groundwork on the Hill and caucus for change, even when it’s difficult? Will you be able to boldly say: “You find a fucking spare for me. And I know you can’t. (ibid, 23)”

Defenders Countdown: 22 Days
Our Top 10 Biggest Defenders Questions (For Now!)
We have many questions, of course, but these are our top ten-- in no particular order:
Who is Alexandra?
We have some pretty good ideas, but Alexandra’s actual identity is still a rigorously-kept secret. We know she is ancient, powerful, and looks on humanity from what sounds like an outsider’s perspective. Sigourney Weaver has referred to her as “a really nice woman,” and an “adversary” rather than an outright villain. It seems safe to assume that she is connected to the Hand, and given her association with the Black Sky (Nobu’s pet project), Madame Gao, and Bakuto, she may act as a unifying force for the group’s warring factions. We know she will be a major threat to our heroes, and to New York in general, and we are happy to be kept in suspense for now.
What is the Black Sky?
We know that Elektra is the Black Sky-- but what does that mean? How was that kid in Daredevil Season 1 also the Black Sky? What does it do? Here’s what we have so far: the Black Sky is a weapon (maybe even an Immortal Weapon, like the Iron Fist?) that the Hand has coveted for centuries. It is very dangerous, and lies dormant in certain people until activated. According to Stick, the Hand have never managed to activate one before. Elektra, having been resurrected and, presumably, having now reached her full potential as the Black Sky, has had her memory wiped in some capacity-- though whether that is a side-effect of the activation or a separate Hand trick is so far unclear. The true nature of the Black Sky-- what it is, where it comes from, what its powers are, how one becomes connected to it/an embodiment of it/etc.? is yet to be revealed.
What is IGH, and is it connected to the Hand?
Super soldier experimentation and IGH are, alongside the Hand, the other major series-spanning plot elements, so we feel safe to assume that this too might be expanded upon in The Defenders. We know that IGH was responsible for Jessica’s powers and somehow involved with Will Simpson’s pills and secret military testing. It doesn’t seem like much of a stretch to also assume a connection with the testing that gave Luke and Kilgrave their powers, along with all of the other research contained on the flashdrive that Reva Connors stole. And given Simpson’s military background and Frank Castle’s involvement in covert ops, we can imagine a connection there as well. (Cue Jeph Loeb: “It’s all connected!”) Someone, somewhere, is funding a massive amount of sketchy research into the creation of superhumans. Since The Defenders is going to be a short show that, in our minds, isn’t going to have room for two major, completely separate antagonists, it seems like a fair guess that the Hand could be behind all of this. Maybe IGH even has something to do with the heroin/blood harvesting that the Hand seems so into.
As for the name itself, IGH immediately brings to mind MGH (Mutant Growth Hormone), which is used as a superpower-simulating recreational drug in the comics. Given the contractually-mandated absence of mutants in the MCU, and the presence of Inhumans, the logical assumption is that IGH is... Inhuman Growth Hormone. IGH is specifically stated to be the name of the organization, rather than the substance, but the reference is too obvious to not at least point it out. Maybe all of this won’t play a role in The Defenders at all-- but given all of the show-hopping elements involved, that would surprise us.
Who is Madame Gao?
The mystery of Madame Gao’s identity has been teased since she was first introduced in Daredevil Season 1, so we’re hoping for some big payoff after all of the waiting and guessing. Iron Fist revealed that she is the head of one of the factions of the Hand, but it also cemented the ties to K’un-Lun that were first hinted in Daredevil. Her assertion to Owlsley that her home is “a considerable distance farther” from New York than China, her fond memories of K’un-Lun, and her intense familiarity with the Iron Fist legacy all suggest a stronger tie to the eternal city than could be explained (based on what we know about the Hand so far) by her Hand membership. For what it’s worth (and this may be reaching a bit...), she’s also surprisingly helpful to-- and respectful of-- Danny, and also hates Bakuto-- who is intent on exploiting Danny’s status as the Iron Fist for his own gain.
We know that she speaks every language (or so she claims...), and that she is at least four hundred years old. She has also expended an astonishing amount of time and effort into building a heroin business in NYC, despite the fact that it’s not her main reason for being there. And finally, she has displayed superpowers that we have yet to see from any other members of the Hand. Who is she, really? What is she up to? And how does she fit into the Hand’s plans? From the beginning, people have speculated that she could be Crane Mother (ruler of the city K’un-Zi in the comics, patron of the monks of K’un-Lun in the MCU). Our newest guess is some variation on Master Khan-- an ancient sorcerer/god with ties to K’un-Lun, and a long-time Iron Fist antagonist. But really, we have no idea, and can’t wait to find out.
Will Stick survive?
Everybody’s been talking about Claire and Elektra, but we’re far more worried about our favorite grouchy ninja. Since this is the climax of his war against the Hand, we could see him making the final sacrifice. If that’s the case, there’s only one manner of death we will accept: literally exploding from sucking the chi out of a crowd of ninjas, after calling Matt a punk one last time...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stick: “There’s a flip side to givin’ life, punk... and that’s takin’ it...”
Matt: “There’s something wrong with him! But what--”
Stone: “The energies-- of two score human souls... Could any man contain them?”
Daredevil vol. 1 #189 by Frank Miller and Klaus Janson
How much screentime will the army of side characters actually get?
We also know our four heroes will be bringing with them mini entourages: Foggy and Karen from Daredevil, Trish and Malcolm from Jessica Jones, Misty from Luke Cage, Colleen and Jeryn from Iron Fist, Claire from... everything... But in an eight episode show with four main characters and a sizable number of antagonists, how much attention are these secondary characters going to get? We don’t need much-- it’s great just to have them, and even small interactions between these guys will be exciting. But we’re not expecting anything like the massive character arcs generally allotted to the secondary protagonists in the solo shows.
What is Midland Circle, and how does it tie into whatever the Hand is planning?
Midland Circle seems to be some kind of financial center with ties to both the Hand and Rand Enterprises. It facilitates Madame Gao’s heroin trade, and Danny will have some kind of business meeting there in The Defenders.
Tumblr media
(”Ninjas! Phew... I was worried I was gonna have to do some actual business.”)
It’s also, most notably, the site of the giant hole discovered by Matt and Elektra in Daredevil Season 2. While we can assume the building/business itself is just a useful Hand front and way of establishing “legitimate” business connections, the hole is where the real mystery lies.
What is the Hand planning?
The Hand have: a newly-activated Black Sky, a lot of drugs and human blood, a giant hole in the ground, a strong base of influence and resources in New York City, and presumably a leader in the form of Alexandra. What, exactly, are they doing? In the comics, the main goal of Snakeroot, the secret group at the very heart (er, palm) of the Hand, is to allow the Beast-- their patron demon-- to fully manifest and take over the world. If the Black Sky and/or Alexandra is some adaptation of the Beast, this may be the case, but all evidence has suggested that the Defenders, as a small-scale super group, will be fighting odds that are a bit smaller than Earth-threatening.
Will the Punisher show up?
A whole lot of semi-confusing Punisher-related information came out of San Diego Comic Con. While Frank did show up in one of the Defenders-related trailers, context suggests that this was to promote his solo show, and not an assertion that he would appear in the team-up. (If he was confirmed for The Defenders, we missed it in the giant flood of news-- so please let us know!) Given how packed the show us, and the fact that Frank is an extreme level of not being a team player, it would make sense to keep him out of this. But also given his popularity, we can’t rule out the possibility of his showing up.
Will there be any actual group therapy involved?
Because frankly... they all need it, and we’d watch that.
