I love the Super Mario universes where they were from Brooklyn or New York City or whatever instead of growing up in the Mushroom Kingdom. Even if it's less canon than the latter... the DiC cartoons and the movie and the other movie and the original arcade Mario Bros. Etc. It's funny to think that they were literally the most run of the mill middle-aged dudes who worked on toilets in New York and then were suddenly whisked away into a magic fantasy isekai world. Usually this only happens to introverted teenage anime boys.

Except maybe daisy and pauline #In the game im thinking about writing a sort of backstory for the mario world that most humans had died off the earth a long time ago #and that mushrooms fed on all the dead humans and thrived and evolved into mushroom people #splat/oon style #and humans are endangered species #it seems kind of silly and a little weirdly dark for a mario game so 🤷‍♀️ i dunno
