Monday morning we headed over to Spain, to Valencia de Alcantara, and the weekly farmer’s market. It is a cute town and we enjoyed coffees and pastries from a Portuguese bakery on the town square. I purchased some local cheese. That afternoon we took a hike up a very nice Roman road to Marvão. It was a stunning day.
Later, I co-hosted ‘Tea at the Quinta’ live from the Quinta Project, which was a lot of fun. Stephan made a delicious dinner and we had a bit of an early night.
It was very hard waking up and getting out of bed Tuesday morning; I very easily could have stayed at the Quinta for several weeks. Susie and I set off at 07.00 for Lisbon’s airport. We made good time despite lots of fog. Thankfully the damage to the passenger side doors only came to around 750€. I spent most of the day flying home; again I had to go via Charles de Gaulle. Thankfully the lounge there is pretty nice.
I found out a photo I took in Antwerp last year was re-posted by the bakery; how fun!
Wednesday I worked on my puzzle which is coming along slowly. I made a batch of marmalade, again using Delia Smith’s recipe (the muslin arrived while I was in Portugal). I also made an adequate loaf of bread. I did several hours’ work on Arabella’s database. I also watched her presentation from the International Dendrology Society, in London, via Zoom.
Thursday I had physiotherapy. My arm is feeling better, I think. Definitely not ready for gardening seven hours a day. I worked on the puzzle and of course did my daily dose of Duolingo. I haven’t been reading. I need to get back into that. There was a Zoom meeting for the Quinta which is always a nice way to spend the evening.

Friday I heading over to Juan-les-Pins for Beth and David’s daughter Fern’s third birthday party. It was a beautiful day, all the kids were in the water, the adults were staying dry and enjoying the sunshine on the sand. Beth gave me some of her sourdough starter, so I’m excited to use that next week. I had another fantastic massage in the evening. I donated more books to the library’s shelf of free books. My bookshelf is looking better.
Saturday - was a lazy day until Luc et Éric showed up around 16.30. We headed to Denis and André’s to check on a leak. Thankfully it was all dry, so not much to do. We then took a walk around Antibes and made reservations for dinner at 19.45. We ate at Casa Luciano.
Sunday - I took the train over to Cap d’Ail to visit Sally, a volunteer at Chelsea Physic Garden. She prepared a delicious afternoon lunch that lasted several hours. It was a glorious day. I only arrived home just after 19.00.

The Admissions Committee on Reincarnated Souls (ACORS)
Alan shuffled papers back into a manila folder and placed it atop the tall stack next to him on the table. “Alright, how many more are there?” he asked, removing his glasses and massaging the bridge of his nose.
Rodney briefly picked through the messy pile of papers scattered in front of him. “A handful.”
“I have to be out of here by four today,” Susan reminded. “Not sure if I mentioned that before, but—”
“You heard Rodney,” Alan said gruffly. “Let’s press through these last few souls.” He put his glasses back on. “Who’s next on the list?”
“Jim Hodges,” Rodney said, glancing down at an oversized chart written in blue ballpoint pen and littered with coffee stains and streaks of red, yellow, and green highlighter. “Owned a small house-painting business in Indiana. Drinking problem. Threatened his wife a few times, but never any more than that.”
Susan exhaled contemplatively. “I don’t like the sound of the wife-threatening. What do you say we put him someplace where he’ll really have no control? Someone whose entire existence is just to be a human wastebin for others’ misplaced aggression?”
“I see we have an opening for an Associate Marketing Manager in Kentucky,” Rodney said, flipping through a Rolodex.
“Fine,” Susan said, rapping her nails on the table. “Next soul.”
“Amanda Desantis,” Rodney answered. “Born middle class. Died….” he trailed off, skimming the rest of the page he held in front of him, “middle class.” He flipped through pink and yellow carbon-copy pages stapled to the back of the page. “Gave good birthday presents. Dropped out of community college. Never moved to another car when a homeless person got on the subway.”
“Any extracurriculars?” Alan asked.
Rodney looked through the files. “Above-average at drawing 3-D cubes, according to her optional supplement. Here are some samples.” He handed a pad of Post-It notes to Alan.
Alan peered over the rims of his glasses. “I’ve seen better.” He passed the Post-Its to Susan. “She sounds decent, but I’m not seeing that she took advantage of her opportunities, which, of course, is what we’d need to see to consider a promotion.”
“I see she has two girls,” Susan remarked. “Single mother? She could be eligible for our FastTrack to Universal Oneness Jump-Start Initiative.”
Alan shook his head no. “Section 10-9840.2(b), remember. The cycle of death and rebirth can only be completed by the achievement of pure divinity, or by minority students with an unweighted GPA above 3.75.”
“Well, maybe she’s there?” Rodney suggested. “I’m not seeing anything bad in this file.”
Alan tsked. “Really? Amanda Desantis is our standard-bearer for pure divinity now? It’s says here she’d post a ton of stories to Instagram.”
“How many stories are we talking?” Susan asked.
“Fifteen. Like everyday.” He squinted at the page. “And she preferred Michael McDonald’s versions of Motown songs.”
Susan whistled through her teeth.
Alan shrugged. “I say we reincarnate her as Amanda Desantis.”
“Alrighty, Amanda’s taking a mulligan.” Susan grabbed a rubber stamp from the table, pressed it down firmly on the top page of the stack in front of her, and then tossed the entire file over her shoulder. “Next?”
Rodney thrust his hand into the pile of manila folders in the center of the table and pulled one out. “Sparky. Labrador Retriever. Liked to lay in the sun for a while and then move into the shade. Killed a squirrel once.”
“I always like it when dogs have people names,” Susan commented. “Like George. George the dog.”
“There’s a note in the file that Sparky is a potential candidate for our First Generation Human Adult Fellowship.”
“Do we think he’s ready for that?” Rodney asked.
“Says here he was early acceptance to stillborn in his previous life.” Alan flipped through the pages in the file. “Obviously, not a lot he could do to prove himself at that time, but he built on that experience to come back as a Lab this time.” He pointed to the top line of the page before him. “Before that, he was a poodle.”
Susan removed a sheet of heavy cream-colored stationary from her folder. “He does have a letter of recommendation,” she interjected. “I’m sure we all remember Bowser, the seeing-eye dog who’s now a state senator in California.” Rodney and Alan murmured solemnly. “Bowser and Sparky were apparently in the same doggy day center for many summers. Bowser learned a great deal from Sparky about sitting, staying, and looking adorably sad to get behind-the-ear-scratches.”
“He sounds like a strong candidate. But I see here he was only in the middle of his obedience school class,” Rodney cautioned. “We don’t want another Carter Page situation on our hands.”
“Everyone knows those obedience school tests favor German Shepherds,” Susan grumbled, glancing at her watch.
“I’m sold,” Alan declared. “That doctor we like in Maine is expecting a boy soon. Sparky will love growing up to become an adult ultimate frisbee coach.”
Rodney nodded in assent. “His strengths will come in handy there.” He glanced down at his sheet. “Next, we have Hank Thomas. African-American. Ninety-two. Drove a cab in Manhattan for fifty-seven years. Loved jazz. Devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Apparently wrote some poetry on the side. Penned a song in his twenties, but some guy downtown stole the rights and made a mint on it.”
Alan chewed the inside of his lip. “We can bring him back as a white guy,” he decided.
“Sounds good.” Rodney made a sweeping check mark next to Hank’s name and dropped the paper onto a pile to his left.
“And then one item of outstanding business,” Susan said briskly, as she pulled a banker’s box out from under the table, blew a thin layer of dust off the lid, and removed a stack of yellowed pages. “We still have some undecided celebrity files that have to be dealt with by the end of the month, per the guidance issued on April 14. As you know, we’ve been unsure how to resolve the many contradictions in the John Lennon file for decades now.”
“Oh, I was thinking about this on the train the other day,” Rodney said. “How about we bring him back as the only child of that lady who’s been dying to have a son, Alana Finkelstein?”
“She’ll eat him alive,” Alan chuckled. “You know what we always say, be careful what you wish for.”
Susan nodded and made a small notation on the page. Then she rolled up the paper, secured it in a plastic canister, and sent it zipping up a pneumatic tube mounted in the corner of the room. “Is that it, then?”
“I’m afraid we still have the Associate Messiah matter to wrap up.”
Susan slumped down in her seat and groaned.
“We’ve had virtually no one in the Upper Great Lakes since our last messiah was beat to death outside of that strip club in Duluth,” Rodney said emotionlessly, thumbing through a banker’s box to his right.
“Does it even matter?” Susan complained. “We still have our District Manager of Messianic Operations in Chicago, and he seems to be holding down the fort alright.”
Alan shook his head. “We really need boots on the ground. Reports out of the area are showing increased levels of theft and masturbation.”
Susan sighed. “Who are our top candidates, then?”
“Well, we’ve got Sam Riley,” Rodney said. “The guy who volunteered at the soup kitchen once a week and recycled. He sent a check to the ACLU last January after the travel ban.”
Alan inclined his head slightly. “Bachelor’s from Vassar, right? We’re familiar with the Rileys, I believe. Fine family.”
Rodney nodded in agreement. “Of course, we’re all appreciative of the Riley Multimedia Center.” Susan rolled her eyes. “Or we have Valencia Rodriguez. Activist and community organizer based out of Detroit, so she would be somewhat local. Vegan. Lent her boyfriend $3000 once and never got it back.”
“Well, she sounds promising,” Susan said, brightening. “It sounds like she has a propensity for leadership. Strong empathy levels.”
Alan wrinkled his nose. “It says here she participated in slam poetry readings from 1988 to 2015.” He tsked. “Bearing in mind the clarifying regulations issued by the Board after the Martin Luther King, Jr. assassination, we try to avoid promoting potentially divisive individuals to this position.” He glanced at Susan. “Also, we could really use a small fitness center for some of the diabetics we’re reincarnating as lacrosse players.”
“So Sam, then?” Rodney asked.
Alan nodded. “We’ll start him off as Associate Messiah on a three-month probationary period, pending review and permanent installment.”
“Sure,” Rodney agreed, “although there’s going to be pretty fierce competition for this guy from the South American branch. He did spend a summer backpacking in Patagonia after his sophomore year.”
“We’ll throw him a Magdalene,” Alan shrugged. “Besides, if he has any interest in transcending the physical world and becoming pure energy, we offer much more substantive opportunities, anyway.”
“Terrific,” Susan said, standing and slapping the tabletop definitively. “I gotta skate. I made plans to play dominos with the Buddha at six.”

Why go: Stay here if you’d like a home away from home with the usual flawless Four Seasons service. Most of the villas at Four Seasons Residence Club Aviara have kitchens or kitchenettes as well as separate bedrooms and living areas that provide travelers with plenty of space.
This is also your best option for extended stays and multigenerational travel (though a stay of any length will be an enjoyable one). The dining at Seasons Restaurant is lovely and changes seasonally — and sometimes daily as the Chef de Cuisine is inspired by the local farmers’ markets — so there’s always something new. If you’re a fan of the brand, like I am, note that this is the best luxury hotel in San Diego, California for all types of travelers.

Why go: You want an intimate, highly-rated, luxury boutique hotel right next to Torrey Pines golf course and Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Built in California craftsman style, The Lodge at Torrey Pines boasts ocean views and excellent service.
This San Diego luxury hotel is often mentioned in national publications as not only one of the top luxury hotels in San Diego, but also one of the top hotels in all of California.
The spa is excellent, as is its restaurant, A.R. Valentien. They even have complimentary luxury car service to take guests within a five-mile radius, which includes the beach and La Jolla Village. I truly believe that The Lodge at Torrey Pines has deserves its AAA Five Diamond rating, which just 2 hotels nationwide earned in 209.

Why go: You like historic hotels with a big list of amenities. The red roof of this historic San Diego hotel has become one of the city’s icons. The roster of Hollywood celebrities, U.S. Presidents, and other dignitaries who have stayed at the Hotel Del Coronado since its opening in 888 is nothing short of impressive.
It’s San Diego’s best full-service beachfront resort and a four-star property. Coronado Municipal Beach in front of the hotel has beautiful and expansive white sand. It’s one of the best places to go to the beach in San Diego. You can also walk to the shops and restaurants on Orange Avenue from the hotel, though it has enough activities onsite that you may not want to leave.

Good to know: Restaurants and shops on Orange Avenue are within walking distance and there is a ferry from downtown San Diego to Coronado (the ferry is about a 30-minute walk from the hotel or short Uber ride). The resort can feel very busy during peak times as residents and tourists visit the shops and restaurants during the day. It is not a good choice for people looking for a quiet getaway, but it is one of San Diego’s icons and the hotel that is most requested by readers of this site. I recommend making dining reservations (including breakfast) and spa reservations in advance if traveling during a holiday week. Speaking of holidays, there is also quite a bit to do during the holidays at Hotel Del Coronado from a seaside ice skating rink to other special programming. And if you’re getting married, you should know that in June of 209, this San Diego luxury hotel completed its renovation of Vista Walk, a re-imagined outdoor space ideal for weddings and other events for up to 900 guests.

Best Hotels in San Diego for Families
Even though we live in the city, I have taken my daughter to many of the best family friendly hotels in San Diego for staycations and little getaways. Any of the above hotels will welcome your children with open arms, but the fact is that the list of the best luxury hotels in San Diego, California for families is somewhat smaller than the list of luxury hotels in general.
It’s worth noting that not all of the best hotels in San Diego for families are located on or even near the beach, and the most popular tourist attractions in the city are spread out far and wide. If you’re looking for a luxury hotel that’s close to all of the major attractions so it’s easier to get around with your little ones, you won’t find one. My advice is that you look at the items at the top of your itinerary and choose a hotel that’s close to what you want to see the most.
That said, I do have my favorites. If you want to stay downtown and keep your kids occupied, the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego is fantastic and has its own summer camp for children ages 4-2. La Jolla Shores may be the best choice for families who want to stay right on the beach without spending a lot. But for luxury, you have to check out the Fairmont Grand Del Mar, which is full of options and activities for families on such beautiful grounds.
Which Luxury San Diego Hotels Would I Choose?
The answer is that it depends. There are usually a few things that come into play when booking rooms at the best luxury hotels in the San Diego area (or any hotel anywhere) that I ask people to think about first. Ask yourself:
Where in San Diego will you be spending most of your time?
Do you like restaurants, shops and things to do within walking distance?
What do you plan to do in San Diego?
What kind of beach access do you need?
Are you loyal to a particular brand?
How much do you want to spend?
As for when to book, the right answer is probably sooner rather than later — especially if you are planning to visit during summer, spring break, or winter break. The months with the lowest hotel occupancy rates tend to be September, November, December, and January, but occupancy rates are high year round. The sooner you book your rooms, the better your chances of getting great views at great rates.

2. Calming yoga flow, a bedtime tonic and journaling gratitude
Prior to bed, CorePower Yoga’s Master Trainer Emily Schmookler moves through a calming yoga flow. Here’s her sequence: Standing forward fold, squat and curl, toe stretch, crescent moon into half splits, table top with a couple cat-cows, child’s pose, and seated forward fold. Then, she rolls onto her back and does some gentle twists and movements to stretch her hips. She also drinks a night-time tonic to unwind. It includes Life Spa’s Ojas Milk, 1/4 teaspoon of ghee, 1/2 teaspoon of honey, and Four Sigmatic Reishi Mushroom Elixir. “This tonic is an Ayurvedic rejuvenate and aids in nourishing your depleted energy, calms your nervous system and helps to rebuild your immune system,” Schmookler says. Her night-time routine also includes writing down three things she was grateful for during the day.

3. Soak in an Epsom salt bath
Teri Wilkinson, yoga instructor, Ko’a Kea Resort & Spa in Kauai, Hawaii says she takes a 10 to 15 minute hot bath before bed. “I put in 1 cup of Epsom salt and 1 cup of baking soda to allow my muscles to relax and loosen up, my body to detox, and to clear my mind from my day.” She then drinks a cup of Celestial Seasonings’ Sleepytime extra. The valerian root in the tea, she says, helps her sleep deeply for about seven hours.
4. Do restorative yoga stretches and listen to melodic tunes from around the world
Each night before bed, Kirkland Shave, program director at Mountain Trek Fitness Retreat and Health Spa, and a certified yoga instructor, does 15 minutes of restorative yoga stretches. He finishes his stretching session with a short Chi Kung energy circulation practice, and makes some prayers of gratitude. “After, I turn my phone onto airplane mode, put in my noise-cancelling earbuds, tune into some melodic East Indian ragas, or Japanese Koto and Shakuhachi music, and lay atop a few spikey balls in bed, placing them along my neck and back,” he says. The balls place isolated pressure on imbalanced connective tissues to increase circulation, and also reduce muscle fatigue and soreness, he says.

5. Use an old-school alarm clock
Since Lauren Larry, a yoga teacher in Manhattan, Kansas, teaches 5 a.m. classes, she makes sure she’s in bed early and doesn’t get disrupted. “I banish tech from my sleeping space,” she says. In fact, she even relies on an old-school alarm clock. Without tech in the bedroom, Larry says, she doesn’t get caught up in the news or a tweet storm.
6. Stone diffusers, tea, and p.m. poses
Carolena Coley makes Bedtime Tea by Yogi and sets up her Vitruvi stone diffusers with a lavender and sandalwood essential oil blend before bed. “As I am drinking my tea, I practice mindfulness with my senses for grounding; what I can feel, hear, see, smell and taste,” says Coley, Yoga in the Vineyard instructor at Spa Terra at The Meritage Resort and Spa in Napa Valley, California. “Then, I take a few minutes to acknowledge my day with my gratitude practice.” In addition to Legs-Up-The-Wall Pose, she also does a Reclining Bound Angle Pose, and stays in this pose for five minutes, placing one hand on her heart and one hand on her belly. “I connect with my heartbeat and my breath, breathing in and out for a count of eight,” Coley says.

7. Have a go-to song for bedtime
Remember nursery rhymes? It’s good, too, to have some soothing melodies that signal bedtime when you’re an adult. Kelly Clifton Turner, yoga instructor and Director of Education for YogaSix, often does 5 to 10 minutes of Legs-Up-The-Wall before bed. She also listens to a favorite song. (“Soul Lotion,” by Cadet de’l’espace, and “Cease To Know,” by Eluvium are currently in rotation). “There is an almost Pavlovian response when I hear those songs,” she says.”I settle right down.” If thoughts enter her mind while she’s relaxing (i.e. “What time is my first meeting?”) she thinks to herself: “This isn’t the time to spend on that.”
8. Mediate and make a to-do list
“I set a meditation cushion on my practice mat, close my eyes and face east in my studio and take the time to meditate, reflecting and reviewing my day,” says Karen Newton, a yoga teacher at Sage Yoga Studio, which is the on-site studio of Prairie Guest House in Fishers, Indiana. During her meditation, she plays relaxing music. “After my 30-minute meditation, I will write out my to-do list for the following day,” Newton says. Knowing she has an agenda for the next day brings about calmness.

9. Count your breath
Some nights, no matter what you try, it’s hard to fall asleep. When that happens, try this technique, courtesy of Jennifer Reis, a teacher at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health.
● Lie down, get comfortable, and close your eyes.
● Become aware of your breathing.
● Slowly count the exhalations backward, starting with 10. Keep your focus solely on the breath.
● If you lose track while counting, begin again with 10.

10. Enjoy a sound bath and a book
Love relaxing with music at night? Spotify has a “sound bath” playlist, points out Erin Motz, the co-founder of Bad Yogi, which offers online yoga classes. In addition to listening to the calming sounds, Motz also likes to read before bed, but she makes sure it’s light reading and not too riveting. She also practices 8-4-8 breathing to calm down the central nervous system and prep the body for sleep. Some of her go-to p.m. poses: Legs-Up-The-Wall Pose, Supine Twists, and Pigeon Pose.

Tłusty Czwartek - Fat Thursday
This will be about traditional polish day ;)
It’s last Thursday before Lent. It’s that day when you can gorge yourself as much as possible. Why? Because Lent is about being humble, no parties, no sweets, etc, and in the past it was really taken seriously. Now, depends. There are no weddings and other parties, especially in small cities, villages. In big cities clubs are open normally (don’t worry). Children can challenge each other about sweets, adults - alcohol ;) 40 days, till Easter.
So coming back to Thursday - that day you can eat as much/as fat as possible. And what do we eat? PĄCZKI! FAWORKI! OPONKI!
We even say that if you don’t eat at least one pączek that day you will have a bad luck. And we really celebrate it. Bakeries are full of people all the time, especially that good ones, in the supermarkets you can buy big packs of pączki or faworki. Every polish table has a plate with them. In the companies bosses order packs for their workers.
I really like that day, it’s very polish, it connects us, everybody talks about it (radio, tv), there are competitions how many pączki you can eat at once! :D
But what is pączek? What is faworek? What is oponek? I have the recipes from my mum and aunt :D Appreciate!
Oponki:
Ingredients:
1 kg of white cheese
1 kg of flour
1 margarine (250g)
3 eggs
1 teaspoon of soda
1,5 glass of sugar (1 glass = 250ml)
1 teaspoon of vinegar
Mix all together, make the dough flat, like 0,5 cm thick. Take the glass and cut out circles, take a shot glass and in the middle of circles make a whole so it should look like donut. Fry in the pot full of hot oil. Change the side of frying often, and take out when will be brown.
I love warm ones, but my mum says it’s not healthy :( So wait till it will be warm or cold and you can sprinkle sugar before serving. SMACZNEGO!

Faworki:
Ingredients:
6 yolks
0,5 kg of flour
12 spoons of thick and sour cream
2 flat teaspoons of baking powder
2 spoons of spiritus
pinch of salt
Flour mix with yolks, baking powder, salt, spiritus and cream. Carefully make the dough till you will notice air bubbles. Make it flat, like 1-2 mm, cut the strips (15 x 3-4 cm). Every strip cut in the middle and hmmm look at the film. Fry in the hot oil (180℃). Decorate with sugar. SMACZNEGO!

Pączki:
Ingredients:
1 kg of flour
250 ml of milk
250 ml of beer
6 yolks
2 packs of vanilla sugar (16 g)
10 dag of yeast
8 spoons of sugar
0,5 of margarine (125 g) - melted and chilled
to fry: most typical/traditional: lard but it scares me so I prefer colza oil xD
filling: most typical: rose preserve. You can use some fruit preserves or chocolate,
Yolks cream with sugar (normal one). Beer warm up, add milk, mix together and put it to the flour. Mix yeast, sugar (like one teaspoon), pinch of salt, vanilla sugar together. Keep making dough for 10 min (yeast likes to be massaged ;)). Put it to the warm place and give it 1h to grown.
Now, split a little bit of dough off, like 60g (more or less, small ball), make it flat, put inside a little bit of filling and close it really really carefully and well. Again, give them around 30min to grown a little bit, and fry in the hot fat (like 180℃), both sides, till it’s brown-gold. Drain it. You can decorate with the sugar or frosting and/or orange zens. SMACZNEGO!
In Valencia I bought pączki in “Bar u Polek” in Plaza de Cedro. Mniam!

Prior to bed, CorePower Yoga’s Master Trainer Emily Schmookler moves through a calming yoga flow. Here’s her sequence: Standing forward fold, squat and curl, toe stretch, crescent moon into half splits, table top with a couple cat-cows, child’s pose, and seated forward fold. Then, she rolls onto her back and does some gentle twists and movements to stretch her hips. She also drinks a night-time tonic to unwind. It includes Life Spa’s Ojas Milk, 1/4 teaspoon of ghee, 1/2 teaspoon of honey, and Four Sigmatic Reishi Mushroom Elixir. “This tonic is an Ayurvedic rejuvenate and aids in nourishing your depleted energy, calms your nervous system and helps to rebuild your immune system,” Schmookler says. Her night-time routine also includes writing down three things she was grateful for during the day.

3. Soak in an Epsom salt bath
Teri Wilkinson, yoga instructor, Ko’a Kea Resort & Spa in Kauai, Hawaii says she takes a 10 to 15 minute hot bath before bed. “I put in 1 cup of Epsom salt and 1 cup of baking soda to allow my muscles to relax and loosen up, my body to detox, and to clear my mind from my day.” She then drinks a cup of Celestial Seasonings’ Sleepytime extra. The valerian root in the tea, she says, helps her sleep deeply for about seven hours.
4. Do restorative yoga stretches and listen to melodic tunes from around the world
Each night before bed, Kirkland Shave, program director at Mountain Trek Fitness Retreat and Health Spa, and a certified yoga instructor, does 15 minutes of restorative yoga stretches. He finishes his stretching session with a short Chi Kung energy circulation practice, and makes some prayers of gratitude. “After, I turn my phone onto airplane mode, put in my noise-cancelling earbuds, tune into some melodic East Indian ragas, or Japanese Koto and Shakuhachi music, and lay atop a few spikey balls in bed, placing them along my neck and back,” he says. The balls place isolated pressure on imbalanced connective tissues to increase circulation, and also reduce muscle fatigue and soreness, he says.

5. Use an old-school alarm clock
Since Lauren Larry, a yoga teacher in Manhattan, Kansas, teaches 5 a.m. classes, she makes sure she’s in bed early and doesn’t get disrupted. “I banish tech from my sleeping space,” she says. In fact, she even relies on an old-school alarm clock. Without tech in the bedroom, Larry says, she doesn’t get caught up in the news or a tweet storm.
6. Stone diffusers, tea, and p.m. poses
Carolena Coley makes Bedtime Tea by Yogi and sets up her Vitruvi stone diffusers with a lavender and sandalwood essential oil blend before bed. “As I am drinking my tea, I practice mindfulness with my senses for grounding; what I can feel, hear, see, smell and taste,” says Coley, Yoga in the Vineyard instructor at Spa Terra at The Meritage Resort and Spa in Napa Valley, California. “Then, I take a few minutes to acknowledge my day with my gratitude practice.” In addition to Legs-Up-The-Wall Pose, she also does a Reclining Bound Angle Pose, and stays in this pose for five minutes, placing one hand on her heart and one hand on her belly. “I connect with my heartbeat and my breath, breathing in and out for a count of eight,” Coley says.

7. Have a go-to song for bedtime
Remember nursery rhymes? It’s good, too, to have some soothing melodies that signal bedtime when you’re an adult. Kelly Clifton Turner, yoga instructor and Director of Education for YogaSix, often does 5 to 10 minutes of Legs-Up-The-Wall before bed. She also listens to a favorite song. (“Soul Lotion,” by Cadet de’l’espace, and “Cease To Know,” by Eluvium are currently in rotation). “There is an almost Pavlovian response when I hear those songs,” she says.”I settle right down.” If thoughts enter her mind while she’s relaxing (i.e. “What time is my first meeting?”) she thinks to herself: “This isn’t the time to spend on that.”
8. Mediate and make a to-do list
“I set a meditation cushion on my practice mat, close my eyes and face east in my studio and take the time to meditate, reflecting and reviewing my day,” says Karen Newton, a yoga teacher at Sage Yoga Studio, which is the on-site studio of Prairie Guest House in Fishers, Indiana. During her meditation, she plays relaxing music. “After my 30-minute meditation, I will write out my to-do list for the following day,” Newton says. Knowing she has an agenda for the next day brings about calmness.

9. Count your breath
Some nights, no matter what you try, it’s hard to fall asleep. When that happens, try this technique, courtesy of Jennifer Reis, a teacher at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health.
● Lie down, get comfortable, and close your eyes.
● Become aware of your breathing.
● Slowly count the exhalations backward, starting with 10. Keep your focus solely on the breath.
● If you lose track while counting, begin again with 10.

10. Enjoy a sound bath and a book
Love relaxing with music at night? Spotify has a “sound bath” playlist, points out Erin Motz, the co-founder of Bad Yogi, which offers online yoga classes. In addition to listening to the calming sounds, Motz also likes to read before bed, but she makes sure it’s light reading and not too riveting. She also practices 8-4-8 breathing to calm down the central nervous system and prep the body for sleep. Some of her go-to p.m. poses: Legs-Up-The-Wall Pose, Supine Twists, and Pigeon Pose.

Most people who move to California, never leave. My husband and I were the exception. Our children are all living on the east coast, which drove our decision to leave. There are many reasons why we return to Los Gatos, California a few times, each year. One of the biggest reasons are the friends we have made at the Los Gatos Swim and Racquet Club, Los Gatos, California.
When we first settled into the area of Los Gatos, California area, our first order of business was to find a tennis club. We visited the Bay Club Courtside and Los Gatos Swim and Racquet Club.
Bay Club Courtside, Los Gatos, California has a lot to offer. When you walk into the club it is beautiful. There is a cafe on the opposite side of the reception area, where you can get a protein shake, coffee, meal, or an adult beverage. It is impressive with great customer service. The club immediately opened their doors to us. They showed us the great fitness areas, indoor tennis courts, Spa, large locker rooms, resort like pool area, and beautifully designed tennis area, complete with a stadium tennis court. We expressed our desire to play tennis and were looking for a great fit. The facility gave us a same day pass to use the facility. We walked up to the tennis pavilion. We explained we were prospective members and that we would like to play tennis. A member standing next to us said “you may not want to join this club, because it is difficult to get a court.” We laughed but kept it at the back of our mind. It was a weekend day, late, hot afternoon, so we were easily able to book a court. We played tennis, and then walked around the grounds again. It was a beautiful tennis facility, so we couldn’t wait to compare it to the Los Gatos Swim and Racquet Club.
We called the Los Gatos Swim and Racquet Club to make an appointment to tour the club which is located near the highway 17 and 85. We walked into the club and were provided a tour. They did say we can play tennis, but not on the same day. We were anxious to join a club, so we were a little bummed. On our tour we walked by two swimming pools, fitness area, on our way to the tennis area. The tennis area has a very nice outdoor kitchen on a deck, which looked inviting. The deck area over looked six tennis courts. The teaching court, with 3 other courts were adjacent to the deck. Events and schedules were posted outside the Pro Shop. We went in and booked a court for the next day at the family oriented club.
The following day we played our singles game at the Los Gatos Swim and Racquet Club. When we were playing, we noticed matches going on the neighboring courts. What was most intriguing was the crew of people on the top deck cheering their teammates on. It made us want to be part of the experience. Afterward we spoke to Lucille, the manager of the Pro Shop at the time, who told us that I could try one of the 4.0 ladies tennis clinics if there was a spot available. . Luckily, the next day, I joined the 4.0 tennis clinic, which was run by the Director of Tennis, Vince Russo. It was a great drill. Vince and his staff always had a lesson plan for their tennis clinics. We immediately felt at home.
While at the tennis clinic, one of the gals said to me, “Cynthia, do you see how nice it is today, blue sky, no clouds, mid 70s?” I said, “yes, it is a gorgeous day!” She said, “Cynthia, it’s like this everyday!” When she said, that, I knew that I made the right choice to move to California, and I knew that I wanted to join Los Gatos Swim and Racquet Club.
For two years, we played tennis and made friends at the Los Gatos Swim and Racquet Club. William went from a 3.0 to a 4.0 tennis player in a year! I learned how to hit a dipper, thanks to Vince! We were lucky enough to have been on several teams that advanced to USTA Districts and to Sectionals! Besides the great tennis, we welcomed the opportunity to participate in the club’s tennis events, such as Wine Downs (Friday night tennis social), Team tennis, USTA matches, always ending in great social time afterwards, with some of the members firing up the grill!
Due to career and family, we moved back to New Jersey. It was bittersweet and exciting because we would be close to family but hard to give up something that meant so much to us.
When the opportunity arises, we visit Los Gatos, California. We usually stay at the San Jose Marriott , Campbell Marriott Courtyard, or close by the Hotel Valencia, Santa Row.
On our return visits, we love to play tennis at our old club, hike the Los Gatos hilly trails, visit the Los Gatos Spa (for a massage and steam shower), dine and shop in the quaint downtown area, and visit our always welcoming dear friends from the Los Gatos Swim and Racquet Club!
